BEST TEACHER FUNNY AND CONTROVERSIAL. I TOOK 3 CLASSES WITH HIM!
awesome
No Comments
Really good professor, smart w/ interesting ideas
He's a really arrogant man who claims that he knows far more than he really does. Liberal views, but closed minded. His classes are really easy, but sitting through his self-glorifying lectures gets old very quickly. Not worth the easy A.
Pretty easy class, lectures can be interesting.
BEST TEACHER EVER!!!!!!!
Great teaceher. very well cultured and open minded
I completely agree with one of the other posts. This man is extremely arrogant and enjoys hearing himself talk. I have learned nothing this sem. except that Shuler likes himself more than I ever thought was humanly possible.
Seems tough at first, but isn't really. Pretty funny guy, likes to tell stories. Take some of them with a grain of salt and all will be well.
awesome prof, open minded, sees both sides, sometimes borin but easy A and very informal and nice
He's AWESOME!
Horribly pompous, but definitely very sexy.
Great professor. Assignments are that kinda opinion crap that you can pull out of your ass and still get an A. He claims to keep an open mind, but he is obviuously a liberal democrat. But he actually is a very funny guy and I would take him again.
This man is a pompous ass who is crude to students. However, he does play a mean piano.
I love this man. He is one of the best professors I've ever had and would take him for every class if I could. He is very gracious, kind, friendly, and extremely helpful towards his students. He's also funny and keeps the class interesting!
His class is pretty easy but he's too full of himself. His ta was probably the wors ta in the history of teaching! The class was REALLY BORING!
Whatever
Hemingway/Wilde persona. Exaggerated stories and shamless self-promotion. Seems very machoistic but underneath the bravado is an insecure and biased man seeking attention and approval. No thoughtful and intelligent academic stimulation found here. Easy A.
Fantastic teacher. I've had him twice, and both experiences have been enriching and very enjoyable. He likes to tell stories, shamelessly promote opinions, and make students think about the way that things really are. One of the best profs at USF.
HANDSOME AND SUPER FUNNY!!!!!!! BUT MEAN AND RUDE.I THINK YOU CANNOT GET ALL TOGETHER IN ONE PROFFESOR, AIN'T TAHT RIGHT?
HE is not very clear when it comes to instructions. Make sure you write every word down that he says... and if he says it just once, he means it. Also, if you have a problem with @$$holes, don't take his class. He is a jerk, and is proud of it.
Effectively taught 300+ students at the movie theater. Taught according to the syllabus. A no-****, no-excuses style of teaching. Plan on attending every day of class for a good grade. He's the Dennis Leary of professors: not for the weak of heart
He's really knowledgeable about his subjects, and gives lots of opportunities to learn. Had lots of projects in his class. He is VERY sarcastic and opinionated.
I heard pompus ass used to describe him negatively? What? He's GREAT because of that! A+ for his sarcasm. Very knowledgable about the realities of the world as well! I think liberals will like him more.
Absolutly one of the best professors and people that I have ever met! This man is truly a person to take as not just a teacher, but as a mentor. Always stoped to say hello outside of class, even after 3 years...
Very funny. Encourages you to tell your opinion and be vocal.
You have to attend every class or you will fall somewhat behind. He doesn't use black board so communication with him and the class is also somewhat hindered. Difficult to talk to, seems like he is more interested in belittling you than helping.
He is a character to watch. I go to class just to see what he will do next. He is very open, and encourages his students to do the same. I HIGHLY recommend him. :)
his classes are always super fun... he will make fun of everyone in the spotlight so its hard to get offended... hes brought me to tears from laughter a few times...
A pompous jerk to students. Tests consisted of memorizing unimportant sentences in the book and had almost nothing to do with lectures. On the good side, he's a good pianist, and his performance of Cage's 4'33" (without telling us beforehand that it was nothing but silence) was spot-on.
:-D He can come off like a**** but I love him! Go to class everyday prepared and you will do well. We had four essays and a participation grade (20% each). The final exam is required and you have to go somewhere with the class like to IHOP or laser tag. Good teacher--I would reccomend him! :-D
Total wiseass. Leave the cell phone at home or else... An easy A if you go to class everday and take the notes. Test questions are straight out of a manual that gives book page numbers where the answers are. Expect to get made fun of.
He's funny because he is sarcastic, but I think sometimes his sarcasm comes off too strong and students feel hindered from speaking with him. Tough class, though interesting. Only two exams, material not covered in class. Hope you like to read!
He's a real jerk! Class is easy if you attend evey day, but he does not like to help students out if they have to miss a test or paper. He has a comment for everything. TOTAL JERK!!!
Great professor...anyone who thinks he's a jerk has no sense of humor. He played the Dropkick Murphy's and Flogging Molly as part of the class. You'll get an A if you have good attendance.
easy class, very easy to get an A. just do your work and studt for your tests.
complete Jackass, but sometimes funny. It's the easiest A! just turn your music notes in every monday, and you'll pass! I made an 87 on the exam, and I still have a 98 b/c of music notes. You can also buy a review, which is basically the exam. It's IMPOSSIBLE to fail--unless you try!

Good teacher, but an ass some of the time. You have to go to class, it is boring, but if you go you will get an A. Just a hint, turn off your cell phone before class, if it goes off in class he will kick you out. If he can't find how did it, he has even ended class.
this guy is an ugly ass. he thinks he's hilarious but his jokes are so stupid, the class is often overcome with awkward tension. make sure to NEVER miss a class. missing listening notes can drop your grade down A LOT. you can get the test Qs at pro copy for a buck. boring, drags on, jerk.
I guess a lot of people think he is an ass because he is so sarcastic, but then again a lot of people lack a sense of humor. Very straight foward on what he wants, do it how he asks for it and you will get an A. His humor is a lot like Lewis Black.
He is very sarcastic. HE tells funny stories. Make sure you take the class with a friend so you can trade off on attendance! Its a simple class!
This professor I think is a very HOTT older man, he was very easy and it was fun to go to his class!!!!
If your prone to making little mistakes on papers, notes, etc. do not take this class. The profossor is an annoying hardass 75% of the time and interresting and funny the other 25%. Turn off your cell phone in class because he goes seriously bipolor over it if it goes off.
He's a funny guy..tells interesting stories. Music notes SUCK though...if your willing to spend hours writing them you'll get an A.
This class was so easy as long as you do your work. He is extremely rough on the outside, but I think it's an act....do your work and go to class and you can't go wrong!
Easy class.. music is kind of annoying at first.. but just go take notes and u'll do fine. exams suck but he gives u the answers before hand.. however, there are like 100+ questions and exams only have like 30 questions. pain to study for.

Was so full of himself, it was ridiculus. Most students came out of the class disprising him.
very stereotypical self-absorbed music professor. Convinces himself daily he's a genius and the rest of the world is full of insubordinate fools. Requires "listening notes" totaling about 1000-3000 typed words a week. Notes and tests are very easy, just extremely tedious, repetitive, and long.
Was entirely self-absorbed and pretentious. Freakish about cel phones... turn 'em off! Made class material a bit more interesting, but assignments were a joke... painfully descriptive (down to the margin size, indents, and way to format headers) and too thorough for a half-semester class. Hated it!
Very good professor. I had him for 2 classes. The music notes suck but other thans he is very knowledgible. I didnt like him for Music studies but I really enjoyed his american studies class. If you pay attention in class you will grow to respect him and learn more than you can imagine

totally full of himself. his mom must have told him everyday as a kid that he was bestter than everyone else. the class wasn't that hard, but watch out for the tests, they were a bit difficult and he didn't offer much help. and turn off your cellphone or you'll go straight to hell!
He was entertaining and only expects discussion in this class. The papers aren't that bad as long as you do them.
He's a complete psychopath but it's mildly amusing. The tests are ok but I'm not sure where he gets the answers he thinks are right. The listening notes are almost insufferable but if you do them and the review you should be fine reguardless of the tests. Good Luck!
He was a good teacher, a complete psycho, but well experienced in his field. Kind of snotty, but if you dont talk to him personally he is kind of amusing. Very repetative, and the tests suck. Just do the listening notes, as much as they suck, and do some test review and you'll be fine.
got a B on the group project cuz a guy in my team didnt show up. so all of us got a B,thats not fair, wasnt our fault! So if it wasnt for that, instead of ending with an A- in the whole semester i would have ended up with an A. wish i could go back in time and not take him. my friend had an easy A prof, so find out who it is cuz i dunno, ask friends
While his class isn't too hard, he is a complete jerk. He gets his amusement from making people feel like a idiot for no reason at all. Having to suffer through his class wasn't worth it. There are plenty of other prof. who can offer much more for their geo. per. class.
Okay, he's a jerk. He's crazy talentd and smart, but does he have to be so smug? No. He's really anal about things, so make sure you pay attention. He's not too nice, so try to stay under the raydar, and if you "suck up" I won't think any less of you...but don't go overboard. CELL PHONES. He had someone removed b/c it rang, so keep them off!!!
He is a pompous jerk. He does know what he's talking about but doesn't really care if you do. He clearly enjoys his reputation as an ***hole. The class over all is easy, tedious but easy. You have to take lots of notes but they don't even really read them. I got an A.
Going along with the same theme as the ratings that i have read so far, they are all true. He is definately a pri**, he doesn't care if you are sick with a fever, or have a doctors note because nothing will be excused. Not only is is the most boring class i have ever taken but the ridiculous attitude of the professor makes it even worse.
Shuler is an awesome professor. Some people try to avoid him, but if you love laughing, and learning, then any class he teaches is the one to sign up for.
Professor Shuler was the person who made me realize what field I needed to study in college. Of course he's a psychopath, but that's probably why I got along with him. Several years, another school, and one music degree later, I never had another teacher that I learned as much from, nor one who made showing up for class as entertaining.
He's a genius.
WEll if you like an arogant, cocky, redundant, annying professor than this class is for you. on the first day of class he kicked a kid out of the class because his cell accidentally went off. A friend of mine had to drop the class because she accidentally forgot to sign her exam scantron

He is a great teacher with good experience and knowledge. But he is a pompous ass and which i would take for the kind of guy to get on here and get off on such a remark. Personaly, hes an ass, professionally, good to go.
The only people that tend to not like professor Shuler are people without a sense of humor. He is well-versed in all subjects he teaches and makes class interesting and fun enough to go to. Most of the stale, dry, and bland professors at USF can learn a thing or two from him, as can most of the students.
Avoid him like the plague...
He is such a jerk. Dont bother disagreeing with him about a particular subject. He will find any way around it. Defenetly lives up to the reputation above.
****!! This teacher does not care about you, or your ideas. Lectures are boring, and notes are due every week are time consuming and tedious. Tests are on the book, which he never goes over in class. He is a jerk overall, not nice, dont even try to talk to him.
I had him for an honors course..he was great. He always dressed professionally, answered our questions, and graded fairly easily. However, I went to my friend's music class..he had on a wrinkly old t-shirt, was treating the kids like they were worthless, and got exasperated when people asked questions. Basically, good for honors, bad for everyone el
Don't bother to buy the books, all tests are from lecture. Never try to argue with him, because he'll probably just kick you out of class. Attendance is manadatory! A huge jerk and treats us like we don't matter at all. trust me, and avoid him at all costs!
Teacher is funny when he is telling stories, but other then that he is very rude. The music is awsome. Don't argue with him, becasue he is always right. He is such an a**.
boring and the teacher is not helpful. do not take african studies
Do not take this class in the summer! It will be too much to take in in just a few weeks. Tests are all fill in the blank, and not just one or two words, you have to explain you answer...no multiple choice. I learned a lot from his class and it was fun, but when it came to the tests, you just get a feeling that you got screwed over.
HES SUCH AN ASS!!!! hes really knowledgeable... but hes so rude! esp when u try to correct him about something like ur OWN religion! hes alright until u talk to him or ask him a question.
i thought that he was interesting. i took his african culture class and i learned a lot. but i also got the impression that he was very arrogant and not as learned as he made himself out to be. the whole class, he only talked about his travels to africa, while we took notes. to me, he came across as an insecure and arrogant know-it-all.
He is such and arrogant prick! He has the nerve to make comments like noone in the class could know anything more about any one religion than him, any religion. I find him unrespectful and completely full of himself. He's also extremely anti-western for someone who spent such a limited time in Africa.
Shuler is a jerk. It takes him weeks to respond to e-mails, and when he does, they are either one-word or incoherent answers. The tests had nothing to do with what we learned in class, but instead were based SOLELY on the reading, and yet he still requires almost-perfect attendance. "American Cinema" may sound neat, but STAY AWAY FROM SHULER!
Class is easy, but talking to him is not. Tests are easy multiple choice.
the guy isnt that bad... HE IS JUST MISUNDERSTOOD!! everything was pretty straight foward, you just have to give the guy a chance. sure he's a bit arrogant but he's ok if u just sit there and smile. He'll answer any weird questions...but be patient

He expects courteous adults in class, which is really great. It was entertaining to watch him point out someone being rude and make an a** out of them. His tests: maybe difficult for a 2000 level course. Even if you attend class, take really great notes, and read the texts, dont expect to make more than a 60% on any test. I wouldnt take him again.
Prof. Schuler is very interresting and givesa very different style of lecture. However if you pay attention and read the text that required you can come a way with a good grade. He also allows 3 absent days before it effects your grade. I would take another class with hime.
DO NOT TAKE HIM!! He is an arrogant jerk who takes forever to respond to you, makes up his own rules, disrespects students, is always late, and is extremely difficult to talk to. Lectures are random and uninformative. Tests are impossible. He truly believes he is God. Awful class and even worse teacher. Seriously, do NOT take this professor.
I did not enjoy Dr. Shuler's class. First and foremost, his attitude towards the class was not very welcoming. He was sometimes extremely rude and too sarcastic. His tests are EXTREMELY DIFFICULT, too difficult for a 2000 level class. I would not recommend this professor to another student, and will not be taking another class taught by him.

He made attendance MANDATORY but did not calculate it into the final grade even tho the syllabus stated otherwise. I had to go to his supervisor to get my grade changed. I studied, went to class everyday, and took great notes... still got a C and my chances of getting into the Nursing program are slim because my GPA is now lower. 2000 level course?
I was shuttled into this class via pre reqs. I was really excited about it but then we took the first test. The tests were insanely hard. His lectures were detailed. Things were on the test that you wouldn't even think to write down. It is possible to get a good grade in the class, just very difficult. If you're willing to work it's interesting.
I is possible to get a good grade in this class but you have to be in every class and write down every single thing that comes out of his pompous mouth. He is really arrogant but sometimes cracks funny jokes. I wish it would have been a more interesting class. He can be really rude to some students with his high-and-mighty attitude.

He made this class as difficult and miserable as possilbe. I really wanted to learn about Africa, instead, all I got was a recap of his vacation to Ghana and a lower GPA! If you end up stuck with him, buy and memorize ALL books and memorize everything he says. The most random stuff shows up on the exam. If you can, STAY AWAY FROM SHULER!!
This guy expects us to know everything that he does when he's been studying the suject for years! he's full of himself and thinks his teaching strategy in untouchable. he is very unapproachable and i regret taking his class
I am a senior now, with only one semester left to graduate. I can easily say that Bryan Shuler was the WORST professor I have ever taken.
The biggest jerk in the university. Disrespectful, pompous, arrogant, smart mouth, know it all. He spent a few days in Africa, he feels like he is such an expert. It takes more than a vacation to become African; believe me!! Do not take his class. He sucks, his lectures suck, and his exams suck harder.
He starts off the semester okay; you start thinking that is class is a piece of cake. But then, once the first exam comes along, his evil side starts showing. He is extremely ignorant and VERY VERY rude. In order to pass his exams, you must write down every single thing that comes out of his mouth, even the things that do NOT seem important at all.
He is a wonderful professor. The class is very interesting I recomend it to everyone. It opens your eyes and mind. The professor has a lot of knowledge about the subject.
He is extremely knowledgeable. His exams are HARD but he does curve. The other assignments due, the research paper and performance review, are graded very leniently. I did awful on the exams, yet pulled off a B overall. It's not an easy A, but if you do your work and study you can pull it off.
I should have definitely read this before taking this class. All of everyones statements are true in regards to test difficulty and his attitude. He barely responds to emails and never grades anything thing in a timely fashion. Seems to care more about how hard his tests are rather than how well his students are obtaining the information. DONT TAKE
Avoid this professor at all costs. His tests are ridiculous and he will not assist you in any way. Grade depends on 3 tests and 2 essays. Make sure to study every word he mentions in your notes. I can guarantee it will be on the tests. Don't end up with an 89.4 like me because he will not help you.!!
He has a very dry sense of humor for the most part but all together he's clear with what he wants you to know. If you study for his tests and attend ALL his classes, then you will be fine. If you're lazy and tend to skip class - don't take him because his tests are 100% driven from what he says in class.
This class is a hard one. If you don't go to lecture and write every word that comes out of his mouth, I guarantee you a fail. 3 tests and 2 papers comprise the final grade, I got A in this class, but I really worked for it. NOT A FUN CLASS, and the professor is demanding.
I don't understand the horror stories on here about his lectures..but for my class he never came off as rude or arrogant. His tests ARE impossible though..I'm a A/B student and never pulled above a C on a test (the final is yet to be determined however) If you MUST take him..make a friend..write down EVERYTHING and READ READ READ..
Shuler lectured only on what is going to be on the test so study everything u write, has 3 test 2 papers. Underestimated his test ended up getting a 69 on the first, later, studied day before and got B then A. Papers are easy A's just follow syllabus EXACTLY. shuler very nice guy hes not terrible like every 1 says. books are rarely used.
Shuler is amazing. I thought a 150+ class would be boring bt he is entertaining. Intro to Black Experience was a good class Hes funny, whether u have a sense of humor or not 4 summer term, we had 1 test, 4 essays & 1 research paper, we also had alot of guest lectures & watched alot of movies. I got an A on all of my papers, Really cool class.
I took African Culture and Society in 2007 (not sure if it was AFS 2250). I thought the information provided was clear, interesting and very informative. I also thought the course was on par with expected level of difficulty at the University level. This class I remember to be the most fascinating of all courses completed at USF.
Taking him at another school other than USF at hcc to be exact he is a very good professor loved every minute of call very easy going and if you need help he will give it to you does so dont understand the bad comments might that i go to hcc and not usf he demands nore from them but oerall good teacher if you are willing to listen you will pass
Great guy, terrible teacher. He is funny, but does not teach at all. He likes to get off topic every 5 seconds and gossip about the latest celebrities. Who cares? He is funny but tests are ridiculous. I wish I had read these reviews before taking this class. I do NOT recommend him.
Beta online class - W.African Cultural Expressions. The class was interesting when the professor actually uploaded the lectures. Slow on answering emails, but very thorough when he finally did write back. I had 2 quizzes, 3 papers, and a journal to write. Pictures and lectures are interesting.
This is the coolest teacher ever. Some student needs to stop pushing all the faults on teachers.Shuler is extremely helpful and incredibly amazing. Shuler is the kind of professor that I will keep going to him even I don't have him as my professor. Shuler is a good teacher. The only reason students don't like him is that student don't do their hw.
Dr. Shuler passionately teaches the Humanities. He intersperses his academically stimulating lectures with funny stories, and if you work hard you will learn a ton. He grades fairly and he genuinely cares about his students’ academic growth, shown by his occasionally giving college advice. Would take a course of his again in a heartbeat. 10/10
In my four years of college, he is by far the worst professor I've ever had. Talks to students in a condescending manner, unclear about everything he talks about, and is just a rude person in general. Also, he told us we'd fail our exam if it wasn't written in cursive. Seriously? This is college, not grade school. Avoid him if you can, trust me.
He wasn't so bad. He is very sarcastic, but pretty laid back and is very into his profession. The TA takes passes around a sign in sheet, but I don't think it actually counts as anything. If you're a good writer, you'll do well on papers! If you're not, study and keep up with the readings because the tests will keep you afloat. easy weekly journals.
Great professor, took online course. Journal entries are due every week, only a few paragraphs. Records lectures, very knowledgeable ,highly recommend. Exams are not difficult if you take notes from recorded material
Professor Shuler is great, he cares about students. I like his knowledge on Africa You can tell he loves what he does and knows his material.
Asian Humanities- You can tell Shuler is very passionate for what hes teaching. Grading is straight forward, do as youre told and youll pass. Homework is a one page opinion paper 250-300 words every two weeks. Required book is cheap ($20). Only one 5 or 6 page paper due at the end of the semester, three total tests, plus Hw, no final.
Don't take his class
He wants you to be interested. Take a genuine approach to learning and you'll excel in the course. Such a laid-back guy, but very traditional and stringent in his expectations. He will very concisely lay out what is needed for you to do well, so stick to his criterion and you'll be fine.
Good class
Prof. Shuler's class is a rewarding experience. He's passionate about the material and makes lectures engaging with insightful stories. Doing the readings and assignments diligently will lead to great learning. Using tools like unstuckstudy for study prep can be super helpful too.
