good lectures
Dr. Mangum rocks!!!! He is the best-- makes Am. Lit. so fun and interesting.... everyone loves him! I never had him for a class.... but I sat in on some of my friend's lectures and he's the best!!!!
i love professor Mangum soooo much! he's the cutest little old man from south carolina and he tells the greatest stories ever! and he's sooo nice. and he actually enjoys what he teaches and makes american lit the best class i've taken so far at VCU.
I <3 Dr. Magnum so much. I love how he actually enjoys what he does, and that rubs off of all of his students. When you show that you care- it makes others care about it to, and it's a good time shared by all. This is the best course, by far.
Mangum made literature worth reading. I you are not into reading a lot but have to take a lit class i recomend him. Go to class and read the works, and then study them agian before the tests and its a breeze
mangum rocks so hard! he is the greatest! all students should have a professor like him. and the works he assigns are great. gotta love this guy.
This teacher rocks! Hes one of the most enjoyable teachers I have come across. He really enjoys teaching and making american literature interesting. If your taking american literature, get in his class! You wont regret it!
Dr. Mangum is the best teacher anyone will have. The novels we had to read are a really good choice. He does enjoy what he does, which makes his classes fun. Please take Mangum and you will not regret it.
Dr. Mangum's love of literature (particularly all things Fitzgerald) comes through in class. Manages class discussion without condescenion, but with authority. A+!
one of the nicest & most sincere people you will ever meet.
A very sweet guy. And guys: it's MaNGum. Says it right there at the top of the page.
The works he chose for us to read really are great. I never would of picked up some of the stories if it wasn't for this class, and it was totally worth it. Mangum has his stuff together, and is very open to your interpretation of a story. Don't be afraid to speak up!
great
He's a very sweet and funny man who will let you get away with more absences than are allowed.
The nicest most caring man I have ever met. His tests are very very difficult, but he only wants to challenge and not punish. If you want an easy A go elsewhere. but if you want want to learn, he is the absolute best.
I had no appreciation for hemingway before this class but dr. mangum made me see more than i thought was there. he is tough but wonderful and inspires you to do your best.
The sweetest man in the world. He is supportive and interested in each student on a personal level. His class schedule is flexible, and the class structure is open and communicative. Even if you don't like the novel/story/author he will make you love it through his enthusiasm. THE BEST!!
Take this guy! plain and simple. VERY HELPFULL, and OPEN TO YOUR SUGGESTIONS, he does everything he can to get you an A. Wants u to enjoy lit. I LOVED HIS CLASS and he is CLEARLY ONE OF THE MOST INTELLIGENT and UNDERSTANDING TEACHERS.
I knew from the first class that I would be crazy about him. He had so much animation in his voice and he's one of the only people I know that still believe humans are innately good. He's the best professor I've had so far and I would recommend him to anyone!
Mangum ROCKS. Excellent choice of material, loves a class discussion, will remember your name and what your favorite color is. Love this man!
Dr. Mangum is the greatest professor ever! VCU is lucky as hell to have him, they definitely don't deserve him. He's incredibly intelligent, he knows the subject matter, easy to talk to, extremely helpful and will make you interested and enjoy the class even if you think you won't. He's brillant & he's written a commentary to a book...go buy it!
writing about literature is not my strong suit, but Mangum is a great teacher. great discussions, a lot of insight into the topic.
Great class. Great teacher. Professor Mangum was the reason I switched into majoring in English.
Passionate about his teaching, and always comes to class smiling with a great story to share. He's patient, and very sympathetic.
Mangum is the Forrest Gump of the literary world - he has connections to Scotty Fitzgerald, Steinbeck and more. Every time I left his class the world seemed like a more beautiful place. His tests were hard (and I usually ace english classes) but I came out of his class 20th century American Lit a changed person. Especially loved The Sun Also Rises.
This teacher is extremely nice, and helpful. As long as you keep up with the readings in his class, he's willing to help and you will do fine.
The best teacher I think I've ever had, ever. He's one of the smartest people I've ever met, and usually they makes people jaded and cynical, but he still believes that humans are at their very core striving to be good. His tests are difficult, but not impossible or as hard as one would think they might be since he knows everything about American Literature. Great guy on a personal level, friendly, full of cheer everyday, and very accomadating. If you want to grow as a person, take any class with him.
Dr. Mangum is a delightful teacher. He's genuinely interested in everything he teaches, and really brings his joy to the classroom every day. He's a great story-teller, and can often be seen reading out loud to students in class, or nodding thoughtfully while his students discuss something. He's incredibly kind and very intelligent--it's evident from day one of being in class with him that he is living his dream. You're definitely in for a great semester if you have him as your professor.
I've had him for another class before. He is the best teacher at this University -- other professors agree! I wish he taught all of my classes...
He is the sweetest man you'll ever meet. Loves F. Scott Fitzgerald and Ernest Hemingway. An excellent teacher!
I will take any class this man teaches. He loves teaching, is genuinely interested in students' thoughts, and is just an all-around great guy. He is one of a kind.
the nicest professor you will ever meet, anywhere. usually makes papers due on wednesday, but gives you the "under my door by 5 on friday" option. genuinely interested in your thoughts and is willing to listen and help you outside of class. wants to help you do you best.. expect comments in your margins! any of his classes are great. take him!
Dr. Mangum is unbelievable. I will remember him, and his class, long after I leave VCU. When you wake up in the morning looking forward to class, you know you've got a good teacher.
I am so glad to see he is still teaching. I graduated a FEW years ago but still think he is one of hte best teachers I have ever had. He is not easy, but he is always willing to help. I have tried to model myself after him. AMAZING MAN
Dr. Mangum is the best professor I have had at VCU, hands down. Helpful, intelligent, charming and always smiling... he's a keeper
Best professor at this college.
The BEST professor at this school. He is so passionate about literature, and one of the most understanding people I know. The kind of professor you remember after the class. Makes class truly enjoying, even if you don't care about the subject matter, and makes you actually want to go to class. Plus he is sexy ;-)
He is so darling! BEST professor I've ever had. I love his stories with his cute Southern drawl.
professor mangum is simply amazing. he is a charming southern gentleman that guides class discussions without dominating them, grades firmly but fairly, and encourages growth as both a reader and a writer. don't think twice, sign up for his class now!
I took many classes with dr. mangum. every one he taught once I had him my 1st time I tried to take. ever feel like God blessed you to have a person enter your life that would change how you viewed yourself & your future? dr mangum was that person for me, a breath of fresh air during my stressful college years~if u can take his classes, TAKE THEM!
He is one of my most favorite professors at VCU. He really cares about the subject matter and about his students. He's an incredibly nice person too. Read the stories and participate in class and you should do well.
By far the most engaging professor of literature I've had at this university. I've taken all of his courses and not yet have I failed to enjoy a single moment of any of them.
It's been several years since I took a class from Dr. Mangum, but every time I talk to a younger student I rave about him. My high school English teachers made me loathe literature classes, but Dr. Mangum's classes are exactly what a literature class should be; he guides the discussion while completely listening to the insights of his students.
Dr. Mangum was by far my most favorite prof. at VCU as an undergrad. I'm in grad school now and his classes always get filled first. I haven't had the chance to get into his classes! I learned so much from him and will NEVER forget what I learned from him. TAKE HIM, seriously
Dr. Mangum is one of my favorite professors ever! I loved his class so much, but I think that's largely because he is just such a lovely, joyful person.
Dr.Mangum by far is my favorite professor@ VCU. His ENG 301 class was great! He's respectful of everyone's opinions of the readings. He's fair with grading, just read the assigned text, contribute to class discussions & ask questions and you'll do great! Has the funniest life stories! Take him, hope he won't retire just yet or he'll be missed!
Absolutely my favorite teacher at VCU. Appreciates everyone's input, and seems to learn from it as well. Goes out of his way to make every student know he cares about them and their education. Do the reading and go to class and you will have an easy 'A'.
Mangum is the MAN. Thoroughly enjoys what he is doing and it shows. He is extremely helpful and really wants his students to excel. Will usually be pretty slack about pushing due dates back or letting you turn in something a day or two late which is a definite +. Take anything you can get with this guy before he's gone!
He is the NICEST guy in the world!! I wish more teachers were like him!
Mangum is great! One of the most intelligent people at VCU. True interest in his students. He walks around the room before class every session and asks how everyone is doing. Really, really great guy, and has GREAT stories.
This is the sweetest man in the world! Take any and as many classes with him as you can!
Excellent Prof. Cares about students, takes a real interest in your theories and helps you expand on challenging ideas. Also, short papers and a soft grader!
I love Dr. Mangum! Not only is he an excellent professor hes a really nice, funny guy. His class discussions are really stimulating, hes not pulling anybody's teeth to make them talk because everyone has something to say. Tests were a bit tricky but not impossible. Take this class! Hes awesome and so are the books.
The coolest guy. His stories are fabulous, and he's as interesting as the novels. The tests aren't difficult if you actually read as you turned the pages. Please don't disappoint him--he's a super sweet prof and will not bend you backwards with rules or busywork, but he deserves you to bring your A-game and make the class lively for all.
I had Dr. Mangum for Cont. American Lit. It was a phenomenal class and I'm not even an English major. Dr. Mangum is so nice and really cares about his students. His stories are as interesting as the books read in class. The tests aren't hard if you've read (and not just skimmed) all of the reading. Plus, the books and short stories we read for clas
Had him for many classes... he is an absolutely wonderful professor. Others have said it, but it is sooo true he shows an interest not only in the material but in helping students connect with it. From my recollection his tests were insanely hard, but not in a bad way, they just challenged you. Definitely take his class if you can!
As long as you keep up with the reading and pay attention to class discussion, you will do well. Extremely helpful and easy going, outstanding professor.
Amazing Professor! He keeps the class interesting and laid back. Do the reading a speak up in class and you will do wonderfully. He gives great feedback on papers, but his quizzes/tests can be difficult because they are very specific. One of the best classes and professors I've taken at VCU.
Dr. Mangum is one of the best professors I've ever had. Homeskillet is the best! He is so passionate about the class, is really open to the ideas of students, and is so humble even though he is one of the smartest people I've ever met. Take his class if you get the chance!
TAKE a class with him! Absolute best professor I have ever had. He is passionate, genius, and kind. Keep up with the reading, you will take so much away from his class.
What a brilliant professor! I was afraid of American lit, but he made it so interesting, that I worked my butt off, and earned an A!
It took me three semesters to get into this class, but boy was I disappointed when I finally took it. He rambles on about backgrounds of the author, and then spends the class period covering a general analysis on the books, but expects you to remember specific details for his tests. It is ridiculous and I do not recommend taking his classes.
Prof. Mangum is a life changing teacher. Not only is he so smart but he is so kind and genuine, which I really appreciated after all the crappy teachers Ive had at VCU. Always works and helps you. Always asks how youre doing. He makes it a point to get to know each of his students. Such a sweet guy. DEF TAKE HIM! Brilliant.
Prof Mangum is super nice and really easy to get along with. He loves what he does and goes out of his way to help each student out. Just do the reading and the papers will be easy. You can get an A, no problem.
Professor Mangum is a truly brilliant professor. He is kind and helpful, making a point to know each of his students. He is incredibly passionate and makes each class a real pleasure. I cannot overstate how amazing he is and thoroughly recommend that everyone with this opportunity take his class.
A teacher with so much enthusiasm and passion it makes the ridiculously hard exams and essays a pleasure. He is, without a doubt, the most inspiring professor at VCU. I have never met a man with more love for his subject matter or more kindness, patience and charity for his students.
Prof Mangum was the most kind teacher I have had at VCU. But I warn you, if you aren't into reading, and the subject he is teaching his class with be a major bore all semester. I dreaded going to that class to hear him ramble on about things I didn't care about. But he was always there giving me the benefit of the doubt on tests which I appreciated
Amazingly sweet old man and will work with you if you talk to him. He jumps around (making him hard to follow) and is a bore, but pay attention bc tests are based off lectures. He also rambles a lot. Only grades are tests & blackboard posts. No papers unless you want extra credit. I personally would not take him again & I'm an English major.
Bryant Mangum is one of those professors who's positivity (or innocence)is contagious, he's always smilling. Great guy, remembers the name of every student and personal things about them. He had great personal stories to share in class. Grade-wise, you have to put a little effort and at least some reading, but he's lenient and rewards work.
So good it will make you sad he is teaching at VCU. Literally one of the best professors I've ever had. Incredibly knowledgeable about his subject and has wonderful stories to tell. Not many tests, so you need to read closely to get good grades on them.
This professor is epic. Hecis one of the most passionate professors you will ever encounter. His knowledge of Fitzgerald and the other early 20th century writers and literature is fantastic: Ever known anyone to sleep on the grave of his idol? He did. Or so went one of his stories, if I remember correctly. To say the least: He is inspiring.
Prof. Mangum is by far the best prof I have had in my 3 years at VCU, and he doesn't even teach within my major. With that, if you aren't an English major, this class could really be a challenge for you, like it was for me; lots of reading and class discussion but Mangum is so understanding, helpful, and caring. Tests are daunting.
He is so nice and sweet and cute. I always get a B or a B+ on essays, he prompts them all and leaves great feedback but does not give out A's generously. Tends to go on random tangents about authors. Always with a smile on his face! Greets everyone as they walk into class, so he's that kind of teacher. Would willingly take him again!
Dr. Mangum is by far the best professor I've had in my 2 years at VCU. The class is mostly lecture and class discussions, but he's so passionate and knowledgeable that I could sit and listen to him talk for the whole class and not get bored. You can tell he loves all of his students and will go out of his way to make sure you succeed.
To add to the overwhelmingly positive reviews, Mangum is truly an awesome professor. The tests revolve around quote identification which is kind of annoying, but class discussion focuses heavily on where he draws test material from, so it's easy to guess what might be on tests. Dr. Mangum makes all literary content interesting though. TAKE HIM!
He is the best professor I have had at VCU
I wish this man was my grandfather. He will remember your pets name after you tell him once and will ask about said pet often. He leads excellent discussions and is very knowledgeable. Show up, pay attention to discussions, and study hard for the tests. I realized after taking 3 classes with him I didn't even enjoy my major, just his classes.
I had him for my US Literature: Modernism class, you can tell this man knows what he's talking about. He is so passionate about what he's doing and it's just so touching. Professor Mangum is always timely with emails, and is so kind and helpful. A lot of reading, he loves when you participate in discussions, but it is not mandatory.
sweetest and most considerate professor I've EVER had. His lectures are interesting and makes you engaged. Highly recommend him for ANY class. He's great and will try to form a valuable relationship with his students. He's a king.
Professor Mangum is a gem of a professor. He's incredibly thoughtful and knowledgeable - a non-pretentious literati! His diverse story selections make for challenging, yet engaging, discussions. His instruction style is discussion based so prepare to talk. He gives timely, relevant feedback. And he cares so much about his students. Take this class!
His class requires a lot of reading and writing, however he was super helpful in terms of suggesting on and editing my papers. He is a really sweet and genuine person and will help you if you need.
I've taken both 374 and 375 with Dr. Mangum, and he's probably my favorite professor I've had at VCU. Super kind and considerate and will help you out if you need it. Great novel selection, really interesting discussions, assignments are relevant to the course material and thought provoking but not overly challenging.
He's just awesome. The best professor I've ever had by far! He knows a ridiculous amount about U.S. Literature and his lectures were never boring. You will read a lot and his tests were pretty lengthy, but it is worth it! Nothing bad to say about Prof. Mangum.
