This is a great teacher. He really cares about whether you learn the dance moves or not, and he is very knowledgable and able to teach well. He also has a great sense of humor and spends a lot of extra time helping students.
Bud is great. He makes class fun and you do not have to be a great dancer to do well in the class. Show up, learn the steps, and try your best. The field trips are easy especially if you go to Bud's Steppin Out Productions classes. NO TIGER CLAWS!
Bud is really fun, and has a good sense of humor.
Bud's great! If you ask him for help, he'll be able to clarify things for you or just show you the dance steps again. Even though attendance isn't required, the class is fun so it's a class you want to go to. Love it. =]
He can be a bit stuck up, but he's generally helpful and funny
nice, but a terrible instructor.
Great teacher... He makes the class fun and entertaining. You will have a great time learing and its a great skill to have.
fun fun class. :)
Bud is an awesome dance teacher, I HIGHLY reccomend him if you are interested in dancing. He makes the class very fun and comfortable for new dancers.
Very helpful and will take extra time to show you what to do if you don't understand, but you need to ask for the help. Fairly easy grader and makes the room a comfortable environment for everyone to learn and have fun at the same time. Wonderful professor. I would recommend taking his class.
he's a cool teacher, help explains and demostrate the steps cleary, very helpful, make sure everyone understand. Just make sure you do go to class because one class period he teaches a lot of new techniques. OH, and the good part is that even though it may say you need a book for this class, however, you don't!
This class is a lot of fun. Bud, is an excellent instructor with a great sense of humor. You can really see his passion for the art and you can't help but fall in love yourself. Attendance is mandatory because you'll just get lost if you miss class.
He has been a great teacher when it comes to dance. His experience in ballroom dancing competitions overall make him the best instructor there is. Fun to be around.
He's a great teacher and very helpful. He explains clearly not only with words but also actions. The good thing I like about his class is that we never have to buy a book.
This professor knows how to set the mood in the classroom. His classes are presented in a positive atmosphere. He makes dancing interesting and enjoyable. He has a lot of patience. He will clarify anything that is unclear to you. He is a fun teacher.
This class was really fun. Prof Ayers makes the class fun and easy. He helps you with the steps until you get them right. The field trip assignemts are really important if you want to get an A. But they are fun to attend to.
Easy grader, but if you want to learn, I don't recommend him. I took Latin dance with Joelle, and learned much more. She drills you on the steps over and over so you don't forget. Bud spends more time talking about it, than he does having you dance it. He runs through things quickly, then lectures about why men and women want to learn to dance.
Easy on grading. He tries makes it seem too serious sometimes, but it is just a 1 unit dance class. I didn't like how you can just give him money for his book or to watch his performances, and get a better HW grade. He's always trying to make money, and he loves to explain why men do and don't dance. Class was OK, but can be frustrating at times
Very very easy class. He is also a very easy grader. He makes sure class is fun and he makes an effort to be less confusing while teaching. You have to go to 5 outside dance classes (they`re easy too) and you have a midterm and a final. I made a lot of mistakes on both of the tests, missed 2 of the outside dance classes, but still aced the class.
Fun, lovable guy with a sense of humor. His teaching style is perfect for beginners and he lets you have fun with the dance. He can go through the steps kind of fast sometimes, but if you just ask for help, he'll demonstrate again or explain it differently.
Bud's a great teacher. You learn waltz & hustle for the first half of the semester and cha cha & tango for the second half. You get to choose which style you like and perform for midterm/final. As long as you show up for the midterm and have fun, you'll pass. Bud has extensive knowledge in pro ballroom competition as well.
Fun class, I had never danced before but I learned a lot. I had the class at 8:30am on Fri...which sucked. Overall great guy, good teacher. Wasn't hard grader on midterm/final (I thought i bombed my midterm, i got 49/50). I was a little confused with the whole homework situation and how that worked. Overall it was a fun class.
Bud Ayers is a great to learn from. His teaching style is very helpful and his class is easy. He's very willing to give help to students who are in need of assistance and he's very kind. His class was a lot of fun for me, so much to the point that I visit whenever I can to help out. Thanks to him, I have a great passion for dance now.
Okay dance instructor. He knew his stuff but he talked a lot. He focused mostly on the class as a whole rather than individuals (unless you went up to ask him). Had to go to outside dance classes which were a hassle. But even without going to all of them I still got an A. Midterm and Final were just to dance for about a 1-1.5 minutes.
Great guy. Great instructor. Take his swing class
In this class, waltz, hustle, cha cha, and tango was covered. Personally, I liked each day rotated a different dance, so I would come on those days. We get to chose the dance for the midterm and final. For the most part, an enjoyable time. Oh, mr. ayers, keep reminding the students to introduce themselves before dancing!
this teacher is really great to take. he is very helpful. he makes the class really fun to go.i learned alot. he teaches in a way so you can learn the steps.
He is not a good teacher for beginners. He is not patient and expects everyone to already know what he or she is doing.
This man will sell you on the idea of wanting to learn to dance, which at the very least makes class go by much easier. I personally enjoyed his instruction. He is very knowledgeable and approachable. He grades easily, even for a beginning class. Yet, this is the most work I've done for a single unit course. All things considered, I recommend.
his class is way too fast-paced. expects you to get steps right away. makes you go to ridiculous dance parties. his class is not worth the time or the effort.
Bud is a great teacher for beginners and the class if fun...if you come to class he will make sure you know what you are doing. 5 lessons are required (approx 1 every 3 weeks) and if you miss one he offers several opportunities for you to get EC. You will enjoy dancing after taking his class.
you wont regret taking him- he's a great teacher! he teaches you not only how to dance but also how to be social and comfortable on the dance floor. don't be afraid to approach him for help when you need it. his teaching pace will depend on how well his students are progressing each day- so yes, you do have to put in some effort in learning.
Super easy and nice, even if you can't dance he will teach you how and you will get an a. Take his swing, social, or latin classes!
Took him for Beginners Social Dance. He's intimidating at first but is a nice guy. Grades easy on the midterm but hard on the final. Makes you go to 5 outside dance field trips. Really fun class and an easy pe
begining social dance, he is a great teacher, had so much fun in his class!! easy A! the only bad part is always switching partners if your partner is bad lol and the outside homework he makes you do (going to outside dance class) but besides that it was the funnest class i had!
very fun social dance class. but remember to dress nice for your midterm and final.
Great teacher!! understanding.. for homework u have to attend an outside class like once a month. 5 times in one semester, kind of a hassle because its pass San jose, Very easy grader. just one midterm and one final. just look like you know what you're doing and you'll be fine
He is a good professor and has a true passion for dancing. He helps you with all of the steps. The only thing i did not like was that there was outside homework, 5 times, and you have to pay for them from your own pocket. The dancing steps are easy and you just need outside practice with your partner to get a good grade on the midterms.
He is really helpful and loves what he does. I had no interest in dancing before his class and now I can't get enough of it. It does feel, however, that he uses homework assignments outside of class to make money for himself. Homework can cost 50 bucks if you go to his lessons outside for homework (which many do). Ballroom dancing=not a cheap sport
You don't have to be a dance expert to take this class. The Lindy hop part of the class can get intimidating, but don't let it get to you. I found this class to at least be reasonable with what I learned.
Love this class!!!! I am not much of a dancer, but when I took the class it was really fun and you get to meet new people. There are homework, but it is easy. Take the class!!!!
Bud is a great dance teacher. He does not expect you to be perfect in dancing, and a very average dance will hit you with an A+. All that matters to him is timing, your choice of music, and how you present yourself (clothes) during midterm and final. Nothing to worry about getting less than an A as long as you do your four HW before semester ends.
I have no complaints about Professor Ayers. He is an inspirational figure who knows that the majority of people that take his class will not be doing dance for a career. So long as you participate in class, you will get a 100%. Until the new health center is built, Bud holds his class off-campus with no nearby bus stops. If you can, take the class
I had him for Beginning social dance. Overall the class was very fun, I enjoyed going every day and learning the new dance moves. He is a really talented dancer and teaches well but can be fast at times. Ask for help if you're not getting steps and he will help you, although he may seem irritated at times, he just wants you to do well. Practice.
FUN class, even if you've never danced before. Attend every class to not miss dance moves. PRACTICE alone or with partners after class so you don't forget how to dance for 1 midterm and final. 3 HW are outside class lessons that are about $10 each. Ayer is nice, cares about students, and always gives life lessons. Chat with him if you have chance.
Spring 2015. Class was amazing. Class was off-campus b/c SPX was in construction so small class size. He helped improve technique and broadened knowledge about social dances regarding techniques. He was very inspirational giving life advice, as well as actual dance advice. Just be on beat for practicals and attend dance hw and you're gooooood.
A bit careless, I don't like the dance class because he doesn't give good guidance on how to lead and wants us to remember a pattern which is useless in social dancing.... coming from a professional dancer... waste of few months
Social Dance with Bud is fun! Prereq is just being able to walk, great for those like me who never danced before. Only things in the gradebook are the midterm, final, & hw. HW is to attend 3 extra dance classes ($5 each). Midterm/final are dance performances with a partner you choose. He also offers some words of wisdom at the end of every class.
Bud is good at what he does and is a very talented dancer. His frustrations when students dont understand tend to show through and he would lecture students for not understanding his directions. Bud is not necessarily the most effective dance teacher but you will certainly learn the basics and gain an appreciation for dance.
He is kind of intimidating. Doesn't really "teach" you how to dance, just tells you to not think and to just walk forward basically. I understand his outlook on dancing, but having SOME basis is actually less scary for first time dancers. Grading is super easy though (for followers at least!) 3 HWs + midterm + final. Accomodating to special needs.
As someone who doesn't know how to dance I am glad I took this class, it provides you with the basics of Latin dance. Bud is willing to help those who ask; If you don't ask he moves on. Show up, pay attention, you will pass.
The class would be ok but the problem with the partner that you need to find to dance with. I hated the class because of the partner I have. Never take that class if you thing it is for fun because it is hard.
Participation matters. If you don't attend class on a regular basis, you won't be able to learn the dance. During class, we rotate dance partners so we can be motivated to meet our other classmates. For the tests, you have to pick a partner, routine, and music. Bud is an easy grader so don't sweat about it. Willing to help during class if you ask
Bud's class is pretty easy going. Not too hard. It definitely takes some coordination though. Most of it is pretty fun! The only thing is, he sometimes makes us feel dumb for not getting it right or asking questions... There were times he made me feel silly for asking a question. So I just stopped asking. :/
He is very talented when it comes to dancing, but he doesn't expect his students to be perfect. He knows people are taking beginning to social dance because they are not good at dancing. He never wants his students to feel nervous about asking a question. He knows what he's doing, and he is very passionate. 3 hw, 1 midterm, one final. Take him!!
Great dance teacher. He expects you to try to learn, but he knows most people don't have dance experience, so he doesn't expect you to be good. Just to make progress. Does expect you to practice outside of class, but that didn't seem unreasonable to me!
GUYS!!! I took Professor Ayer's class and he is one of the best professors you'll ever meet at SJSU! He is inspirational and helpful. You can tell he is passionate about dancing and the class is super fun! Super duper recommend !!! Even if you don't like dancing he makes the class fun! ALSO, HE ENDS THE CLASS WITH POSITIVE MESSAGES!! He's a gem!
The class consisted of one midterm and final: pick a partner, got about 2 weeks to prepare, perform one of the dances in front of the class. There were three outside assignments so you had to attend 3 other dance classes for credit(provided list to choose from). The prof made sexist jokes that made ppl uncomfortable. Do better sir.
Bud is very charismatic and genuine and really wants you to learn, not only about dance but about life and yourself. I loved his class and would absolutely take it again. Not an easy A only because he wants you to actually get something out of the class but he will work with you and is very understanding. Take him if you are lucky enough to!
Bud tried his best to transition into online learning. He not only cares about teaching dance, but he cares about your personal life as well, giving plenty of life advice that school doesn't teach us. He is very understanding and made the classes fun. Great personality and a caring person! highly recommend if you have to take dance.
His class was super unorganized and unclear with assignments. Had us text him out assignments and test answers. It was hard to keep track of what needs to be done because there was nothing to refer to. He also made sexist remarks and seems like he has not learned from other students complaints.
Probably could've been an ok class in person but he's not great at teaching online. You get almost no feedback so you don't know if you're doing well. Showed us youtube tutorials during class bc they teach better than him. He doesn't rly care about your grade. If you miss 10 points the highest grade you can get is an A-. vague when giving answers
This professor likes to blame his students for everything he lacks. He becomes frustrated at the smallest things, yet questions why students don't ask for advice/questions. Unfortunately, I cannot recommend this class, especially for people who don't identify as M/F (he is very strict on gender for no reason!) He's so unwelcoming to many students.
Bud is not a good professor. He does not explain concepts well at all and gets overly frustrated with students when they do not understand. He thinks everyone is able to dance well right away.
Professor Ayers is nice and really wants students to learn and tried his best to help you. He will help to fix your wrong steps and master the dances he taught in class, but you need to make some efforts for that. Also, he will give you some useful ideas for your life, and it's great!
At first I didn't know what to think but bud really cares about you and teaches you more than just dancing. He really helped me and I plan on taking him again. Really good class
Bud is a really nice guy and really means what he says. I am by no means a dancer and had to take his class for units. I do not regret it at all as I learned lessons I thought were useless. It even brings confidence outside of the classroom. It could be difficult if you do not show up, however.
Prof Ayers is an amazing dance teacher. He cares a lot about his students. He ends each class with an inspirational quote that is very motivating and helpful. He is a teacher you could go to if you have any problem. He is very knowledge about dancing and is willing to help in any way possible.
This professor is really passionate about dance. In this course I have learned many dances such as tango and cha-cha. In the beginning, this class would be difficult because of how different it is compared to other dances. As time passes, you'll become better and used to it. There are three homework assignments to be completed out of this school.
Hustle, Waltz in first half of sem, Tango, Cha-cha second half, attendance is your whole grade basically, 3 hws where you have to go to dance workshops. Really nice professor and fun class. Get to choose your midterm and final partner and song. Show up to class on time.
Bud is probably the best professor I had at SJSU. Just attend daily, learn to dance and get a life lesson at the end of each class.
I love dancing, so picking up steps was easy for me but Bud made things even easier. Also, the TAs in this class are awesome. Bud also likes to make sure that you know what you are doing, so asking questions is a must if you don't understand. (he won't be mad if you want to repeat a step or go back from the past lessons) Attendance is a must tho.
Has 3 homeworks for the whole semester and a midterm/final dance. Pretty easy class if up just show up and try but he's a bit passive aggressive. Tries to make you feel dumb when asking a simple question.
TAKE THIS CLASS! Show up to class, be an active participant and listener and you will be able to learn the dances. It's not a hard class, it's very fun and relaxed. Bud can come off as slightly annoyed at times but that's because he's most likely already addressed the person's question so they weren't listening. Warning he uses gendered language.
Bud is a great teacher! I have never danced before, but now, I love it! In this class, you get a chance to dance with everyone and he separates you into leaders and followers on the first day. It was easy to get out of my comfort zone because Bud created a great learning environment. Everyone was so friendly; it is a great place to meet people!
The class itself is fine, but the professor expected everyone to pick things up quickly and became annoyed if you didn't. Definitely don't recommend the class for anyone who doesn't identify as just male or just female due to his comments and insistance that (in dance) males are always the leaders and females are always the followers.
I loved Professor Ayers! Took his Latin Dance class and it made me come out of my comfort zone so much. If you ask questions, he genuinely cares in helping. He's older so you can see when he get's frustrated or annoyed, but don't take it personal! At the end of the day, he wants dance to be fun for everyone.
Didn't want to take a dance class but had a overall positive experience would recommend it now. You actually need to know the moves because you have performance for the midterm and final. Homework is finding songs ( pretty easy).
Professor Bud Ayers is a great Professor his classes are fun you get to learn alot of things about dancing and also life from saving money to loving yourself. I WOULD TAKE THIS CLASS AGAIN. and plus i got to meet alot of friends.
Appreciated Prof. Bud's class! Grade's dependent on attendance; I missed 6 classes and got down to an 84%, so try not to miss too much. HW is just going to 3 dance workshops. Absolutely loved his words of wisdom after every class; it helped me feel more confident about my uncertainty after grad. Can't wait to take him again for my last PE :)
Difficult to follow with learning two dances a week. Had a tendency to be a bit passive aggressive if you asked for help or didn't understand. Homework is easy. Midterm/Final have a dress code. Enforces gender roles so leaders are referred to as men and followers are ladies. Easy enough to deal with though. Show up and you won't fail.
Attendance is mandatory, missing classes can drop your grade fast. There are two dances taught per week which can make learning difficult. He can be easily frustrated and passive-aggressive when people aren't picking up the choreo/his instructions quickly. Midterm & final performance, but grades easy. This class is great for making friends!
Took Bud again for my last PE. Sometimes his teaching doesn't click, but it's 100% guaranteed someone else will feel the same. Bond with them; that'll secure you a partner for exams. Also, altho attendance is important, it doesn't impact your grade as much as HW/exams. I'd say as long as attendance is ≥80%, just do the hw/mt/final for an easy A+ :)
Bud is an amazing professor! There are 2 dances taught a week, dance steps can get confusing but ask him for clarification when needed. There are 3 homework assignments, 1 dance routine for the midterm and final. You do have to chose your own partner so make sure its someone you feel comfortable dancing with, it makes things easier.
Followers in partner dance have it way easier than leaders. Beware the leaders that don't show up/ mentally checked out as they're difficult to dance with. Bud was awesome though, genuinely cares and is super funny. My class had lots of students not attending/not practicing, which made him irritable sometimes, so, do not be that person, please!
