Hardest teacher in department. He does not give a lot of partial credit and expects students to study at least 10 hours a week. If you can get through his class you should be good to go for the rest of your upper level classes.
WOW! Kealey is HARD. Be prepared to basically learn the information on your own. He gives little "extra" help and his tests are horrendous. 50 students started the class, less than 20 at the end. I would try not to take many other classes with this one, unless they are REALLY easy.
Prof Kealey takes FOREVER to grade tests, quizzes, and papers. He instructs the papers to be written as though 'in the real business world', but the working students got poor grades and the '20-somethings' got good grades. So one wonders if Professor Kealey know what it is really like in the real world. Know that he never admits being wrong.
One of the hardest classes I have taken! He said that the drop, fail or withdraw rate for the class is around 40%. Only take the class if you are willing to work and have A LOT of time to do the HW! If you can pass this class then you should be able to do great in the rest of your acct classes! Also don't slack on remembering definitions!!!
Kealey is difficult. He doesn't give enough time to complete your tests. Work the problems first and then do the MC. Review his old test they will be similar in nature. And take really good notes in class he bases his tests it. He is willing to answer questions and responds to email quickly. Be prepared to devote a lot of time. 50% will drop
It is no wonder why no one likes him and his red and purple jeans. His tests are very hard to complete within the time limit and im a fast test taker(one test well more than half didn't finish in time). Be prepared to work hard because over 33% dont pass his class and that is something he brags about.
This professor lacks organizational skills and is unfortunate. My advice to this professor would be to really help the students. Don’t intimidate the class, HELP IT. Make it a two way communication. Feels like an online class with no teacher.
I was skeptical at first, but then I took his class and man was he a great professor. This guy knows his stuff and has such a easy time relating whats going on today in the world to what he is teaching you in class. There is work to put in to this class but you'll come out thanking yourself. Dr.Kealey is a great guy and great professor
Before the semester, I read all the reviews on Dr.Kealey and was skeptical. Kealey was the first accounting professor to grab my attention. The class wasn't easy but Dr.Kealey was very helpful and I learned more in his class than any other accounting course. If you're serious about learning than Dr.Kealey is for you.
Best teacher I've had. Exams are not bad, they're the class example problems with different numbers. He wants you to explore GAAP for case studies, and I'm glad I did. He won't give you the answer for those, but he IS helpful. Hes funny. He loves his son. Hes a great person. He won't give preferential treatment and that's why some people bash him.
Dr. Kealey is a great professor! The test's are not that easy, but if you put in the right amount of study time you will pass this class no problem. He gives you all the material you need to pass the tests. Don't even think about texting or messing with your computer during class! He will kick you out after the second warning.
TERRIBLE PROFESSOR. I cannot stress this enough. If you want to keep your GPA high, stay away. VERY DIFFICULT and will not let you drop. I am a junior with a 3.9 gpa, I obtain good grades and his class was nearly impossible for me. I took it again with a different professor and got an A.
Loved taking this class with him. I took it before with Kate King and he is WORLDS better than her. I cannot stress enough with this man, you get out what you put in. He's not going to GIVE you an A, and I kind of lost attention in the last 1/4 of the class, but up to that point I had an A, because I earned it.
Dr. Kealey is a difficult professor but also very fair and straightforward. He does not use powerpoints but does provide them. Most of his lectures are based on FASB codification references, which I felt was very interesting. You will study a lot, but his study guides are great.
If you want to be an accountant do not take this class with kealey. Having hkm as my professor made me Hate accounting. His teaching style, tests, no extra projects, and Wiley plus make this class the worst and hardest to attain a decen grade unless you want to study 40+ hours a week. Avoid him at all costs.
Great Professor! I would love to take class with him again and again. If you understand the material in class, do the homeworks and go over the assigned problems, you should be in good shape. Think of putting about 5 hrs of work for this class. His tests are straight from his exmamples in class. If you pay attention in class you are in good shape.
If you're looking for a fair accounting professor look elsewhere. I did all the homework and studied 3-5 hours a week and did not get the grade I expected. Tests are confusing and questions are worded different than the book. This is from a student with a gpa above 3.0.
Dr. Kealey is honestly my favorite professor so far at UNO. He will discuss his DWF rate (drop, withdrawal, fail) during the first couple of lectures, but don't let that discourage you! He helps students that need it and want it; he is not there to give you an easy A. Dr. Kealey wants the best for his students when they put in genuine effort.
If you put the work in, you will do just fine. Study the key parts of each lecture in detail, and expect an A or B. I studied 3-4 hours a week and was .3% away from getting an A.
Tough concepts taught well. Do the homework and study for tests and you'll do well.
One tough class. Gives the hardest examples to do for homework and tests. Concentrate on the concepts and rules to get yourself through. He doesn't quite understand that his students are not as "smart" as he is. Feel dumb asking questions in class. You will learn a lot. You NEED to memorize definitions for A/L/R/E/G/L - don't shirk this!
Dr. Kealey will tell you up front that you have to work hard to do well in the class. Book and online problems help, but his problems are the most helpful for the tests. Make sure do to all of the examples he posts on blackboard. He does not take attendance, but I recommend attending every class. Grades fair. Funny with a dry sense of humor.
I loved this class. It was hard, but I feel confident moving forward in accounting having passed. Dr. Kealey doesn't try to make it easy, but really, he should be thanked for this. My suggestions for success? Read the book. Do the homework. Pay attention. Take notes. You know, the normal stuff you're supposed to do as a college student...
Wow! Dr. Kealey's lectures are intense, but productive. My advise to students would be: never skip a class, don't be late, read the chapters carefully, and don't give up when the subjects get tougher. Grading is fair, but tests are hard and confusing!! Good luck!
Assigns a good amount of homework, be ready to put in work. His own made up problems will help you most on the tests. A bit disorganized in his teaching method, I would highly recommend looking at the examples in the book for ways to organize the processes. Expect quizzes, planned or not. He will try to scare you off in beginning, but lightens up.
Dr. Kealey definitely has the students' best interest at mind. He wants his students to learn and earn their grades. His discussions are useful, but READ material beforehand! Overall, Kealey is fair and I would take again.
Read, read, and then read some more. Practice, Practice, and then practice some more. I made the mistake of taking this class "lightly" and now I've been playing catch up all semester. Go hard with the material immediately and it will pay off, but don't- and pay the price of stressing all semester.
Hard class, but Dr. Kealey is a great teacher. The tests are hard so make sure you actually read each chapter, and take your time with his homework. The homework that you are assigned is not pointless, in fact a lot of it builds together and will be on the exam, especially if you go over it in class as well. Take good notes, study and you 'll pass.
Dr. Kealey is one of the best professors I had, (period). He emphasizes understanding, (not memorizing) accounting concepts and does an excellent job explaining the logic behind them. I only received a B because I'm not a great M.C. test taker. Future you will be glad you took from Dr. Kealey, (assuming you take your education seriously).
Tough but fair. Dr. Kealey is the type who won't let slackers try to smooth talk their way into a good grade, but at the same time is willing to help out those who are truly working hard in his class. This made some of my fellow students dislike him, but I never had a problem.
Heavy teacher
Duration of tests are based off how long it takes him to complete it himself. The Show your work test questions are very confusing which makes it hard to complete.
His class is hard and textbook and test heavy, but he is likable and respectable. If you don't know all about Patrick by the end of the term, them you obviously didn't go to class enough.
Although I will not pass this class, it was not due to Dr. Kealey's teaching but due to my own lack of understanding. Yes this is a tough class and the tests are difficult but he does not set you up for failure. If you are an accounting major and want to be well prepared for the future I would honestly suggest taking his class. Ask questions!!
Dr. Kealey's class is the hardest class I have ever taken. However, I have also learned a lot from it. Don't get discouraged in the beginning, he is only trying to weed people out. The tests are very hard so knowing the material front to back is crucial. Do his study guide notes, do his practice problems, and pay close attention in class.
Kealey really does care a lot about his students, and wants them to succeed. He is easily accessible outside of class. The learning is mostly done through reading the book and going over the questions in class. There is a quiz at the beginning of each class over the readings for the chapter. If you put in the work, you will really learn a lot.
Can't decide to take his class? Here my experience and list of pro & con. Homework and quiz once a week. You will have to read and learn by yourself. Lecture time is not much. Pro: You will learn a lot and master those materials. Grading is fair if you work hard. Corn: Time pressure for quizzes and exams. Traps in questions. Good Luck My Friend.
There is homework due every class period and it takes quite a bit of time. Carve out 10-15 hours a week for this class just for the homework. This is a weed-out class for the accounting program so all the students received either an A or failed. You have to work to get a good grade in this course.
He makes you set up your own homework on excel which is hard but it forces you to learn the format and the content. He is very boring but if you focus you learn a lot. I would take again because I did learn a lot, he just wasn't super entertaining and the homework was tough. He will go out of his way to meet with students to prepare them for exams
he's a cool guy
Dr. Kealey is a cool dude, I just didn't like his teaching style. I didn't feel like we did enough examples in class, homework was super hard and I never got much out of it unless I did it with others and we helped each other understand it. This is a hard class, I recommend taking it with someone else.
I know a lot of people may consider him boring but he is actually very calming. When he gives lectures he stays on topic and is extremely easy to understand. Some teachers have the curse of knowledge but it seems that Prof Kealey doesnt. He explains everything SO well its much appreciated. This is the professor to take accounting with!!
Dr. Kealey is a really good guy, but I'd never take him again. Homework and watching lectures are due every class period, takes a couple hours for both. Tons of group work every class. Took it with him remote and he acknowledged that we're having a hard time right now, but the work just keeps on coming hard. Really wants you to succeed though.
Awful
I had Kealey online for accounting and it might be the worst experience I have ever been a part of. He does not care about his students and does not know how to teach information whatsoever. Might be the worst professor of all time and hes not personable at all. He screws his students over and always points the finger at students. DO NOT TAKE.
Kealey is an overall bad teacher . Thinks hes teaching style is good and it might be the worst. Horrible class, not worth taking.
Dr. Kealey's class is not hard, it's just time-consuming. His lectures are short videos but they're a lot of them. He will help you if you reach out but he is reluctant to do so and will debate you about it. There is so much homework, and the tests are heavy. This class will take a huge chunk of your time if not you will struggle.
One of the best professors I've had. I'm shocked at the negative reviews on Dr Kealey. Anytime I needed help or felt I should've gotten a better grade he was MORE than accommodating. Lecture heavy? Not really. Max 2 hours a week. He only gives what you need. I didn't use the book at all. It shows who skips class and doesn't take notes. Participate.
This class was Remote, professor is nice, you have to watch lectures before the class which can be time consuming, basically he wants you to have read and listened to lectures so you can work on examples in groups. You have to work for it, if you want to be treated like a baby this professor is NOT for you. If you want to learn Acct he's helpful
Kealey is great, if you watch his lectures and TAKE NOTES on them, ask questions, do the weekly hw, youll pass, you can read the book but i just skimmed through it, it is helpful so if youre unsure about the class id reccomend getting it, i dont know where these bad reviews came from but they most likely didnt do those things i mentioned
Dr. Kealey is a very nice man. He has been courteous to me and some other students going through some difficulties. If you don't try and dedicate time to this class, you will not pass. I'd advise people to take this class only if you're serious about accounting and learning. Overall, he gives you a ton of information in the lectures, its just hard.
Dr. Kealey is demanding of his students, but really helps you learn the material. Solid choice for a professor if you are willing to put in the time and effort to do well. You will not do well if you are not willing to work for your grade!
Passionate for the subject, teaching, and learning. Fair to his students. Challenging and motivating professor.
accounting is hard. prof kealey does care about his students though. each class consisted of some lecture followed by group work. tests were pretty easy, as long as you understand the basic fundamentals you should be fine.
Dont teach makes you learn on your own
Knowledgable guy? Yes. But I do not recommend taking this class online/remotely. Praised himself for his teaching style, but it did not suit my learning style at all. Overcomplicates materials. Must watch several lecture videos & complete tedious homework assignments. Tests are hard/confusing - avgs are usually around 60-65. Hard class in general.
This class was like a full-time job! Would not recommend taking online or during the summer semester. He was fairly easy to reach and seemed to care. The textbook assignments were tedious. His lectures/tests seemed way more difficult than anything presented by the textbook. Probably an average professor if you had an in person class.
His lectures were slow, confusing, & he would constantly go on off-topic rants. The homework given as well as the practice tests for the exams were completely different from the material on the actual tests themselves. Tests use LockDown Browser with a camera; You couldn't write anything down for longer problems or use your own calculator.
Worst professor I have even taken a course with. Extremely condescending and treats students awful. He had a test due over thanksgiving break as well as held a review session over fall break. I went to tutoring multiple times a week and did all of the material and still did bad. My tutor said the course content was harder than any other intro class
I literally made an account on this website just to leave a review for how poorly this course is ran. There there would be easily 2-5 hours of videos you'd have to watch each week. Multiple homework assignments per week took 5+ hours. Then I got to the first exam, to find out it was NOTHING like the homework whatsoever. AVOID THIS COURSE and PROF.
Accounting is... a lot- you NEED to invest time. Weekly homework can take 15mins-2hrs. Lectures each week average 5 hours. You need to read the book AND watch lectures. Not difficult- just VERY time consuming. Tests are from book/lectures. Easy A if you have the time & dedication! He and his lectures are very helpful! His rating should be higher.
Dr. Kealey is very smart when it comes to accounting, but his teaching style is so old school. The online homework was understandable and I could see how it was done, but when you get to a test, it's completely different. The way it's designed leads to trick questions and a format that is different than the homework, leading to a frustrating class.
Watch classes and read book and you'll be fine. He wants his students to pass and is open to criticism or to answer questions
I signed up for the class despite the bad reviews. I'd highly advise choosing another professor, especially online. The hours of video lectures and homework due weekly were nothing like the proctored exams. Our class average for the first exam was 50% and he blamed us instead of trying to help. He was extremely unapproachable, rude, and unhelpful.
Truly an awful teacher and class. He has a terrible teaching style and homework and class is literally nothing like the tests. Tests make up 70% of the grade. DO NOT TAKE HE IS AWFUL
The exams are worth 70% of your overall grade. The unit starts with lectures then homework. The homework is much different than the lectures. Come exam time, the exams are nothing like the lectures or homework. The exams are timed and on lockdown browser.
Kealey is awesome! He recently reformatted so that you listen to the lecture before class. We then use the entire class period to work on an exercise and can ask questions while we are doing it. He will help you through it and give you advice as you go. If you aren't putting in the work you will struggle. Great class for kinesthetic learners!
Professor Kealey is very obviously passionate about what he teaches, however his lectures are long and the homework/exams dive much deeper into the material than he does. I've had to work very hard for the grade that I have right now (currently a B+ and dropping) because I have to keep teaching myself the material that he doesn't go over.
His class is a lot of work and time-consuming. His exams are multiple-choice, and you must use the 4-function calculator. His final is comprehension too. His class/exams are fair, you can find all the questions answered in his lectures. He doesn't allow note cards or extra credit. He's passionate and wholesome but can be seen as unapproachable.
I promise you all, the good reviews on this website are written by himself. DO NOT take this class - the exams are worth 70% of the class & are nothing like the lectures whatsoever. You will be tested over things never discussed once.
This is by far the worst class I have ever had. Lectures and homework are nothing like the tests. The tests make up 70% of the class and the class average for each one was around a 50%. His homework prepares you for nothing on the test, there is no correlation between the two. DO NOT TAKE!!!
This professor is awful at communication and talked down to me heavily when I went to him for help. He bragged at the beginning of the semester about students not doing well. He constantly made me feel dumb for needing help. DO NOT TAKE
DO NOT TAKE THIS PROFESSOR. His tests are nearly impossible to do well on, with our class averages being around 50%. He does not curve any of them or offer any sort of extra credit, and they are worth 70% of final grade. He does not care that his students fail, as he told us 50% of them did so last semester. Study Guides do not help either.
Kealey was a nice professor, but this class was very very very boring. Do the homework and watch the lectures and you will pass.
This class was time consuming, but overall straight forward. The professor likes to tell jokes that are not that funny, but the class was good ig.
Idk why there are so many bad reviews. This class is not difficult, but it does take about 5 hours outside of class per week. However, I think this would be necessary no matter where you took the class.
Prof. Kealey is a fantastic professor, the only downside is the students effort. We have been at half attendance OR LESS since the second day of class, any bad grades ARE the students fault. He has amazing resources & is always available for questions. Be ready to learn, as this is a medium level class IF AND ONLY IF YOU put in the time and effort.
The tests you take are nothing like the material you learn from the book, and are nothing like the homework you do to prepare for them. Acing the homework failing the tests. Make it make sense.
The tests are easy, but only if you attend most classes, complete the homework and take notes. SO it is time consuming, but the actual class is not difficult. People complain about this class, but half of my class stopped attending classes so really you just got to suck it up and listen to his terrible jokes.
I took his class after dropping my first accounting class last semester. The exams are multiple choice and timed. I don't like timed exams, but overall, this class is pretty standard. I would recommend asking questions if you don't understand something because it really takes that for him to give you a full picture of a concept.
By far the worse professor I have had at my time at UNO. I knew it was going to be a rough semester when after the first exam, mind you the class average was less than 60%, he essentially told us this is a learning opportunity and that we need to do better next time. What an unbelievable joke this class was. Whatever you do find another professor.
A normal day in class consisted of doing a class activity with your peers. During this, you're encouraged to ask questions. You'll feel belittled, however, I found it very helpful. Make sure to watch lectures and do the homework. Exams are fairly easier than homework, but questions are different. LISTEN IN CLASS, everything there is on the Exams!
Dr. Kealey seems as if he wants his students to fail, I've been trying so hard all semester, and it's thanks to none of his lessons that I'm barely going to pass. Normally, I'm a good student, but he overcomplicates every topic and takes pride that his past students failed. He made me feel horrible for not immediately understanding topics.
After graduating Magna Cum Laude this past spring the only professor I had trouble with during my undergraduate career was Professor Kealey. Avoid this professor at all costs. First exam the class average was around a 50 and the students were blamed. I have talked to several other students who took this professor and they shared similar experiences
Dr. Kealey truly cares about his students. If you a struggling, he will put in the time to help you. The course is difficult and his lectures on canvas make it even more difficult just due to how unorganized they are. It is possible to do well in his course, but his teaching style isn't the best if math is not your best subject.
As Professor Kealey said himself, in this class, your opinion does not matter. I agree that there are only the facts regarding his class. Coming from a student with an almost perfect GPA, out of all the classes in UNO, this class is absolutely awful, and the sheer lack of professionalism by the professor says that he is the one to blame.
Homework practice doesn't match tests
Professor Kealey was very lecture heavy. We had to watch the lectures outside of class and then would do practice problems in class. He was a good teacher, and easy to follow along. Just be prepared to spend a lot of time on accounting outside of class.
Typical old school professor. Gives what to learn pages filled with info. Points to them whenever you don't remember something. "Wants students to succeed" then states he is not going to implement the most common student rec in end of semester survey. Refused every ask to help me succeed. Has the mentality of needs to teach you a lesson.
Dr. Kealey is old school. This class is definitely a learning curve and will force you to put in more work than you thought you had to. Each test requires at least 20 hours of studying and just expect the test questions to be very different from the homework. While he is tough, he still cares about making sure you learn something from the class.
Burch is a great professor but you have to actually try in this class. He really cares about his students but doesn't care about the ones that don't care about the class. Which I really respect. He does not give out free grades and you need to participate in class in order to understand the information. People who hate on him didn't try and are mad
Very much expects you to know what he's talking about, before he even teaches it. Read your textbook before class. Otherwise, you'll get lost two minutes in.
Great class - just be aware it is NOT an easy A. Online exams are 70% of your grade and require lockdown browser and video recording. He gives you everything you need to succeed (practice tests, lectures, class activities, textbook) - you just have to use them, and you BETTER use them if you want to succeed. He truly does care. Easy to contact.
Professor Kealey is old-school but cares about students who put in the effort. The class is demanding, but using resources like unstuckstudy alongside the textbook can really help nail the concepts.
Professors like him are the reason people hate school. He is disrespectful in every possible way. Has zero care for his students—an overall bad teacher in the classroom and outside. Has zero care for the mental well-being of anyone and isn't opposed to public humiliation of students. Cares more about his reputation as a teacher than anything else.
I liked Dr. Kealey but avoid him for this class. - Course materials will not prepare you for exam. I cannot stress this enough. Ask the janitor, and they'll provide you more clarity on what will be on the exam than he does. - Video lectures are longer than IRL class lectures. - Expects you to spend 20 hours a week on course. I did and got a C+.
Lecture and homework heavy. I don't recommend.
Beware of the Burch. Coming into the class and seeing the first message of “I failed 50% of my spring semester students so bring your A game” was a heck of an opener for the class. If you're unlucky enough to only have him as an option, pray you can take the class online. He's extremely lecture heavy and expects a lot of pre-knowledge.
