Budick spends most of the time talking about the origins of theory and giving background information on Physicts. He writes theories on the board but does not teach students how to apply theory to problems. Tests are multiple choice, no partial credit available. Worst class I've taken in my academic career.
Least helpful professor that I have had so far. Wastes time during lecture telling funny, but pointless, stories that did not help me learn physics. I aced the class only because I put in a lot of time outside of class doing practice problems. He was also not at all helpful when I went to his office hours.
My experience with Professor Bu**** was awesome. I had him for experimental physics. He was extremely smart and helpful. I have a feeling these two reviews below mine were done by pre-meds or something.
Best of the three gen physics one professors, so don't sign up for his class. The way the curve is done for gen physics you actually will loose out being in his class as it'll have the hardest curve. Instead, sign up for one of the other professors, but attend Bu****'s class, that way you get the best professor, but a decent curve.
I love Professor Bu****. He is a true intellectual and he knows more than just physics. He is extremely clear and articulate and does a GREAT job...not to mention he is hilarious. Definitely recommend
awful! class was ridiculously hard even though i took AP physics in high school (and its basically the same material) and lecture was absolutely useless.
Worst class offered at NYU! There is no classwork, no homework, no recitation, only lecture. You can't even really call it a lecture though because all he does it talk about useless **** that has next to nothing to do with physics. If it IS physics related, it won't help you at all. Only take this class if you love teaching yourself usless crap.
worst class ever, teaching is not rigorous at all (from a math major's point of view), prof. skips materials and wastes time during lecture, actually learned nothing about phyiscs from this professor. don't take this class if you care about the quality of your education in math and physics.
Bu**** is a nice guy but he does NOT teach for his exams. You might as well use lecture time to study on your own. And be sure to do the practice exams at least twice or as many times as it takes to master the exam problems.
He is not clear with his examples. He skips over a lot of the material, so you HAVE to read the book. The CD that came with the book was a WASTE of money because we didn't use it. I did not learn much from his lectures and I am a hard working student.
60% of class is spent on "nexttime problems" sometimes announced by email, but just as often not. If you have not tried the problems, seeing it being solved is useless. If you have solved them on your own, seeing them again in class is useless. Rest of class is spent on stories about his travels and his cat "Augustus". Pretty useless overall.
I took this class during the summer and it was awful. He's a nice guy but really should not be teaching anymore. He tells stories during lecture and when he decides to actually teach you won't understand anything. The tests are hard too. I strongly advise taking Physics with a different professor
Taking General Physics during the summer is tough, but Burton does not make it any easier. If anything, he should probably get his own podcast called "Burton Bop." Burton could most likely be found cruising around NYC in his Buick Regal dropping arbitrary knowledge on ongoing NYU students with his cat Augustus. We love Burton, but his class blows.
He's one my favorite professors in recent years. Honestly, out of all the phys/chem/math classes I've taken in college and high school, his class is the only one I would want to take again. His methodology of often bringing in real-life references during lectures actually helped me understand the materials better and kept the lectures interesting.
Ok, 1st, I took physics from him at columbia, not NYU, so if you're at NYU, maybe things are different. But he was one of the best lecturers I ever had. The swinging bowling alone was worth the price of admission. Clear derivations and background. Favorite: relevant practice problems and (forgive me) the tests themselves were learning experieces.
Not recommend. I did well just because I have already studied physics for five years. Always fall asleep during his lecture. Midterm and final are super easy but lectures are hard to follow.
Ok, I haven't taken a test yet so I can write this review without the bias from me failing (bc I think I will) but Prof B__ick is the best prof in NYU! Seriously, being in his class really makes you forget you're in a sh_tty place like NYU, even if it's just for 2.5hrs a week. I don't even know how this school managed to hire him!
One of the best courses I've taken, and I hate science. He's really knowledgable and he obviously cares a lot about what he's teaching, and the tests are almost exactly like the practice test, so you can focus on actually learning rather than just learning for the test.
Einstein's Universe is really easy IF you do the assigned readings. The practice midterms and practice final are similar to the actual exams in format/problems. Understand though that this course involves a good amount of math and physics - it's not all theory. The labs are also really important to do. Grades are curved based on the class average.
Einstein's Universe should be fairly easy if you put in some basic minimal effort. He usually emails out his lecture notes which he reads from directly in class, so you don't even have to show up. The readings help a lot but are by no means mandatory at all.
Don't take Einstein's Universe if you want an easy science class and are not mathematically inclined... Way harder than the other science classes. The exams are manageable if you learn the practice exams by heart though, and labs aren't too bad.
Lectures are useless. Tests are hard.
His handwriting is not legible. Also asks too much material on tests. 5 chapters in my opinion is too much to know for one exam. Gives a fairly good idea of what to expect on exams but be prepared to study a lot
He's pretty cool dude and he really knows what he's talking about. But you probably won't.
Handwriting is terrible. Talks (more like mumbles) to himself in class. Only up side is that majority of the items in the exams are homework problems. Down side is that there are 250+ problems and only 15 of 20 items in the exam will be from those.
The worst professor I've ever met! You practically never have to attend the lecture because those are useless. He just mumbles to himself or gives useless life hacks. Grading is very unfair and nontransparent. He didn't post a single grade even after the final grade is out. So, you have no idea what you get from the final exam.
This class is so useless. The lectures are pointless and attending them won't help you on the exams. 13 multiple choice tests doesn't leave room for error and overall, just a really sad class. He's a nice person but as a teacher, falls short of being amazing.
I feel like this guy doesn't have his teaching style fully developed. All he does is problems all class, and granted that can sometimes be useful, since his tests are consisted of pretty much those exact problems, you don't really learn the right way to think about physics like that. Not a great experience in his class for sure.
He is clearly at NYU for his own research. The lecture is just him talking about things that interest him, and most everything is run through the TAs. Top to bottom, nobody wants to be in that class. It is what it is- mandatory.
He's a nice guy, but he just doesn't know how to organize classes and make things interesting. That being said, the class is not too difficult. I never went to class and I still did really well on the labs and tests. If you memorize the practice tests, you don't even need to learn anything, the tests are exactly like the practices.
I'm writing this review because this guy doesn't receive all the credit he deserves. His lectures may not be so clear at times but if you read your textbooks his tests are incredibly easy. Also the practice test he gives out is extremely similar to the actual one - easy A class for sure. Also hes very approachable+accessible outside of class.
His lectures do not help understand the material, though he is very nice and would explain carefully if you ask. Some questions in homework are not included in the textbook, and the textbook is tedious and very detailed. Exams are easy, and he would not change much from the practice exams, but it doesn't mean it's easy to get an A.
not very much homework and practice exams are largely the same with real exams
The lectures are so disorganized going to them is pointless. The labs are boring but are worth 30% of your grade. The exams are easy enough (as long as he gives out sample midterms, which he doesn't do consistently) but the class is still tedious for non-science majors.
I think he is an amazing professor. There's a clear grading criteria and the exams resemble homework problems, word for word. He also gives a generous curve at the end.
Took this class because it was the easiest Physical Science core requirement but regret it infinitely. The professor is so slow in lectures and often goes off topic. The midterms have so much content that we did not cover in class until later in the semester.
What was supposed to be on of the easier core requirements was extremely difficult. Lecture's are not helpful because he goes off topic constantly. He includes information on midterms that were neither discussed in class or in the textbook until later in the semester.
There is absolutely no reason to attend a single class besides the first day. Absolutely NO reason to go. The homework are found online, the exams are extremely similar to the practice ones. His lectures have been the most boring moments of my life.
Don't go to lectures. Do all of your homework as early as possible, focus on labs. Tests are awful.
The professor is very enthusiastic about physics which makes the lectures more interesting. The class can be a bit dull at times and could be more organized, but overall I learned a lot. The tests aren't difficult if you pay attention, read, and do the practice tests, although we did no math in lecture but there is a lot included on the tests.
He moves too fast through problems and he's not good at teaching concepts. I found I had to teach myself most of the material.
He is a nice professor. If you read the notes he posts very carefully, you will do just fine.
Takes attendance & asks questions for credit during class. Tends to go on long tangents during class and is not interesting at all. The tests are relatively easy, but are made harder by the fact that he doesn't lecture well at all and doesn't always explain things in a manner that makes it easy to understand. Do not recommend.
He is a nice guy, and he clearly cares about physics. But his lectures were hard to follow, as he would often go on tangents that were not relevant to course material. Tests had some random facts from lecture, but if you study the practice exam, you should be okay, they line up pretty well. Labs are super important for your grade.
Sweet guy who really gives off grandpa vibes and is clearly interested in physics but is not great at connecting lectures to exams. He only explains concepts and then breezes through problems which sucks. Luckily practice exams are v similar if not identical to test material and "Next time problems" so do those.
Worst professor ever. Lectures and resources all messed up. Don't know how to use ppt only relies on projector to show unclear black-white pictures. Explanation makes you more confused. 30% answers for practice exams are wrong even though they are past exams. Irresponsible and unaccessible. Taking his lecture is a waste of my life and time. AVOID!!
Please do not take his class. He gave us practice exam with lots of wrong answers. He just read the textbook in class. He use google in class because he can not answer question. TA is more helpful.
He can't teach whatsoever. I hate to write a bad review for a professor but he really messed with my education and gave me unnecessary stress. He is horrible at lecturing which makes the exams quite difficult. The lectures are the most pointless things. He goes on random tangents and when he occasionally teaches physics it isn't clear at all.
So, if you're not good at physics, DO NOT take this class. Most of the concepts are abstract, the professor is fast-paced. The class is tough (and I have a good GPA) and the labs are a lot of work. However, the labs made the class a little interesting.
Absolutely horrible experience for an online summer session. Professor can be short and rude with students when they try and point out errors/confusions in the material. Answer keys are riddled with mistakes, absolutely no organization to the documents under NYU classes. Lectures are incredibly difficult to get through and seem to lack structure.
While I am inclined to forgive professors for mistake while we transition into online courses during the pandemic, this professors course is just not up to par. The lectures are fast and unfocused, there isnt sufficient time for questions, the handwriting is illegible and often I find I wouldve been better off enrolling in khan academy
Here's an actual, word-for-word quote from his syllabus, titled "Tips for Coping". "You will need to devote 5 hours per day to reading the text, going over your lecture notes and especially solving the problems. Not included in the 6 hours are the times spent in lecture, lab, and recitation." Tests/homework on concepts never discussed in class.
Worst professor in a while. Seems very nice and sweet but has no teaching abilities and doesnt know what is happening. This course should be called khan academy..
I don't even know here to begin. Sure his exams are kinda similar to his practice exam, but HE DOES NOT TEACH! You have to learn most of the material by urself. I rather watch Youtube videos and Khan academy than listen to him ramble, which are absolutely better! Save yourself the time and GPA by trying not to take his course, or take off-track!
If u thought Orgo with Jones was worse, this just took the prize... He says that most students who take his course are pre-med, so he goes very fast to cover the topics for the MCAT. That is still no excuse to disregard the concepts, in which the MCAT tests heavy for passage-based! Just self-study for his course, cuz you will be definitely!
Unbelievable! Course is disorganized, lecture notes contain little to no info, and HW has absolutely no correlation to exams. He just rambles on and on about how to do problems, which he doesn't teach you how. 2/3 of class don't show up, likely due to the fact that they are all self-studying at this point... Please avoid his class.
If med school didnt require this course, I wouldve avoided it. Just self-study his course, he barely teaches, goes on useless tangents, and if u do take it for the MCAT, just use Uworld or third party tutoring services for the MCAT. At this point, u r paying tuition for a glorified undergrad name, why not fork over 200 to ace the MCAT. *Sigh*
Should have taken general physics freshman year with Adler, now its too late... *Sigh* Just self-study for 1-2 hrs per day, and u might do fine. Remember, everyones taking it for med school and MCAT, as long as u self study the concepts, ur golden.
Coming from a high GPA student, this is the single worst and hardest class I've ever taken. Professor is rude to students. Barely teaches, terrible explanations, so expect to rely on self-teaching entirely. We go through an average of 1.3 chapters per day, an insane pace. Lab is disorganized. Exams more challenging than practice. 0/10
Absolutely terrible course. The professor doesn't really teach the concepts, and his notes are often illegible and skips steps. He oftentimes does not explain how he derives his work. His practice and actual exams are riddled with errors. He is rude to students during lectures or through emails. 2/3's of the class doesn't come to lecture.
He is by far the WORST professor I have had in my life. His lectures are impossible to follow and almost incoherent. Even if you try to self-study and look at the answer keys to the practice exams, his handwriting is illegible. He skips steps and does not explain how he got the answer. Your best bet is khan academy and praying for a good curve.
This class is a phat L
Everyday I wake up and wish Professor Adler was still with us so he could save us from this nightmare of a class.
WORST
Wow i've never taken a worse class/had a worse professor. He's literally made someone cry over zoom and does not even make up for his rudeness by being a good physics teacher. Constantly writing incorrect practice problems, practice exams, and actual exam questions.
Disappointment to NYU, physics department is just awful. Does not care about the students at all, does not know how to teach. NYU needs to do better, I expected more for such an expensive school
Genuinely the worst teacher I've ever had. He has made students cry multiple times in lecture and enforces, quite frankly, draconian measures to prevent cheating while the class is administered online. All this is in addition to his incoherent teaching, illegible handwriting, and incorrect questions/solutions on both practice and actual exams.
I have never disliked a professor this much before. Not only does he fail to answer his own exam questions properly, but his lectures are useless for the course. Even with a strong background in calculus, his failure to meet even basic standards of teaching has left me to self teach myself with no guidance. If you can avoid him, I would recommend.
Really doesn't deserve all the hate he's getting. If you do the homework problems on WileyPlus and the recommended problems he posts in NYU classes, you'll do fine on his exams. Even though the start of the semester was a little rough, he listened to student complaints and I'm pretty happy with how the course is going now.
Lecture portion of course is easy if you just do the practice problems, but the lab portion is no bueno. Also the practice exams he gives you are basically identical to the exams so i don't know why everyone is complaining
This class is a nightmare.
Apparently his/physics department's idea of trying to curb the "cheating" (seeing that students studied hard and got good midterm grades) was to give questions that have no correct answer choices in that even the closet numerical answer is like off by 50. The physics department and him need to proactively do something and not appease their own ego!
If you care about your grade DO NOT take this class, lectures are extremely disorganized, you have to study EVERYTHING on your own. if you can take it with another prof or off-track do it. I don't know what holy knowledge the ppl who give him a rating above 2 have, but avoid at all costs, go take it at another college or something
Worst class I've ever taken. After taking the third midterm exam for this class, he released the scores with EVERYONE'S names and IP address linked to it. All 337 students in the class saw what each person got and where they took their exam. This was an invasion of privacy and completely unprofessional. The average for this exam was a 55% too.
I wouldn't take this class again if I was paid to do so. I've been forced to teach myself physics for the entire semester and even now I can't say that I know anything. I have personally corrected his answer keys to exams and problem sets and it's quite frankly embarrassing that the University allows him to continue to teach.
the worst class I have taken in my life. Although it was not the hardest conceptually, the stress he has put us through is insane. He leaked all of our IP addresses, coordinates of where we took exams, & our first and last names next to our exam scores. This man is a joke, and the university should be ashamed that 335 of us had to endure all this.
1) 3+ major mistakes on every practice exam, real exam, and answer key 2) tried to fail whole class for doing "too well" on test2 w/ no proof of cheating 3) leaked everyone's private info (ip address, location, name) to the entire class after test3 4) it took threatening to sue to get one, insincere apology from Burton/dep NYU should be ashamed.
Don't take his class. Impossible to follow along to, extremely unstructured lectures, students are left guessing on what they're supposed to study, what they're being graded on, what textbooks they need, what assignments they are supposed to do, you will learn NOTHING from this class.
Exams are pretty much the same as the practice midterm. He clears your doubts when asked and is very approachable. Do the readings and you are good.
Take this core with someone else. Extremely unstructured lectures, prof assumes students already have a solid foundation of physics. HWs due at the end of the semester, but you never know which textbook to use for the assignment. Labs were difficult imo. Lectures are draining and unhelpful. I only passed bc of my TA, who was a lenient grader.
He's an awful teacher and an awful person. I really don't understand why he is still back teaching after releasing student's info and putting countless students through so much. The bottom line is he should not be a professor because he simply cannot teach. NYU's standards for hiring professors could not be lower than this person.
Not hard to tell that Professor Budick loves the area he teaches. You may find his lecture interesting but requires extra patience. He is a very kind grader, and the exams are almost the same as the practice exams. Make sure you do the readings as well, very helpful. Despite all the negative feedbacks I have to say it is one of my favorite courses.
I'm so serious when I say don't take this class. This is the worst class I've ever taken in my four years at NYU. Disorganized, no tools inside or outside of class to help students, prof doesn't respond to emails, and the expensive required textbook is pretty much useless. Lectures are a waste of time, so everyone ended up teaching themselves.
I didn't like his class at the beginning too. But, he is willing to take students' complaints. But, people complain about him and don't come to class. So, they don't know if he is getting better but keep complaining about him. I feel bad. The only reason I could do well in this class is because I actually pay attention to his lectures.
