The professor is clear about the way she grades. Most of the questions on the midterm are questions she goes over in class so it is mandatory to go. She's really nice & shows videos which makes lectures fun. Participation matters or she won't give answers to the questions & she drops the lowest midterm grade.
Very nice lady, but gives poor lectures. Really poor lectures. She uses top hat, which is cool itself, but the way she uses it makes me hate it. Not clear on assignments, not good use of canvas. Avoid her if you can, but i think fst 50 is only offered once a year, so probably you don't get to choose professors for this class. Good luck...
Though it was mandatory to go to lectures, they are extremely LAME and I don't feel like really learned stuff in lectures. Tests are quite fair, lectures contents are not too hard, but it wouldn't be easy to get A. Lab are very fun, but Professor Lungu shouldn't be taking credit for that, so she still gets a 1.
She timed each question on her midterms. So beware of that. You really have to know the materials right away, right on top of your head. The materials are not hard, you just need to know it like the back of your hand. She also made the class pay $20 for this tophat app. Kinda stupid in my opinion when she can just use iclicker.
This professor gives crazy exams
Though I managed to get a good grade, I really really wish that I will never never have to take her class ever ever again. Extremely boring lectures yet have to go to class for points. Extremely unclear on assignments/ homework yet graded harshly. Pretty much didn't learn anything. She really shouldn't be teaching here.
Everything you need is on the mandatory app ($20) tophat app. Study that you'll be fine. Exams are on a powerpoint and about 40 secs per slide depending on the question, can't go back. So that's stressful but 90% are really straightforward. She offers 5% EC if you just take notes on a word doc. Drops lowest exam, didn't take one and still got 100%
Exams are 95% of your grade. Drops lowest one. Makes you pay $20 for TopHat (an app) even though clickers work well too. You have to participate in class questions for points. PowerPoint exams no time to look over previous questions. Answer it then go. A question/slide that only lasts for 30 seconds. Do not take class if you have testing anxiety.
I really don't want to sound to harsh, but do not take her. She seems to not want to take any responsibility for low averages. Terrible lectures, specific power point midterms, very demanding attendance(on tophat-$20), no curve, but offers 5% extra credit for taking your notes cornell style. Other 95% of grade is from tests- 3mt, 1 final, drops one.
Her slides can be irrelevant, she offers extra credit but it's a all or nothing grade. There are 4 midterms and one midterm is dropped. Her midterms are relatively easy if you study and some questions are common knowledge but the test is projected on the screen so you have 30 seconds to answer is and you can't go back. Which I really hate.
Honestly the worst professor I ever had! No practice tests or study guides for exams. All she said was " look at the slides." There are about 350 slides included in each exam! Also have no idea what she is teaching. So cherish your lives and don't take her class.
The class itself was okay, material is straightforward. However, Lungu was not very enthusiastic to listen to, esp not in the morning. She doesn't make time in class for questions & if she does, she doesn't answer. Instead, she tells you to look over the slides again. She makes class mandatory w/ TopHat ($20) which didn't always work. iClickers
Her lectures may not be the most interesting but that's okay because after all, it's not the professor's job to entertain but to teach and her lectures are straightforward. You get 5% extra credit just by taking 4 surveys total and submit cornell notes. 4 midterms but 1 gets dropped, 15 cornell notes 2 get dropped, and 2 attendances get dropped.
Optional textbook/reading, uses Tophat during class (like clickers, but on your phone, costly, and not reliable), not good at time management and will go over, memorize the lectures for a good grade, 3 midterms and an optional final (lowest score dropped), test questions are projected on screen and you have 20-30 seconds to answer, 50 Q/scantron
A LOT TO REMEMBER!!!
The professor has an accent and uses a thesaurus that makes her slides too complex and wordy. (in African accent) Conceptualize considering viewing the instructional slides and they always view in this manner. Also, the tests don't directly reflect the slides. There are so many teachers that would have been better than this lady for FST 10.
I liked taking her classes. She is a lot of interesting anecdotes and insight into the food industry. I would recommend getting to know her.
Lecture heavy. The exam is straightforward and can get an easy A. But the lecture itself is quiet boring.
The class has a ton to memorized for midterms it's usually 3-4 powerpoints making about 250+ slides to study. It's all fair game for her 4 midterms too, however, the lowest is dropped. I would have really appreciated a study guide for the midterms. She seems like an okay person and tries to get students to engage in class. Thank goodness for P/NP
I loved Dr. Lungu. The course itself, is easily passable as long as you attend lectures, and review the lecture content before exams. Exams are all based on memory, as long as you remember what she puts emphasis on and main concepts of the subject, you will do fine. The lectures can get jaded if you aren't actively interested in the topic.
The Lecture is pretty heavy and has 4 midterms (drop the lowest grade). The first 3 midterms didnt really reflect the Lecture. Tons of things to go over before each midterms. The tests tend to test too many details instead of the overall concepts. No study guide or practice exams. But definitely go take the last midterm, it's the easiest.
She sets too much work for students to work and what students to engage. However, this class is totally based on memorization. The lecture is super boring.
She's very nice but I wish she could go slower on her lecture slides. Although the material is very interesting, she presents it in a bland manner. Tests are not hard, but easy to get a low grade if you do not memorize!
She is bad!!!!!
I wish I could give her a zero.
Her midterms are very technical, they do not test the concepts.
She is the worst professor I have ever taken
She timed each question on her midterms. So beware of that. You really have to know the materials right away, right on top of your head.
FST 10, 2018, Fall Quarter. Easiest GE ever. VERY INTERESTING CONTENT. 4 Midterms. No Final. Lowest midterm score is dropped. 5% extra credit for taking cornell notes. 95% exams, 5% attendance. Also, why is this professor's rating so low? She is a clear lecturer (has a slight accent tho), funny, and again she teaches VERY INTERESTING CONTENT.
The class has lotsss of powerpoints need to be memorized. If you want to get a good grade in this class, you need to spend lots of time on memorizing. (Approximately 200+ to 250+ powerpoints per midterm. ) Total of 4 midterms, and the lowest one can drop. The midterms have 95% in the total scores. If you like memorizations, then take the class!!!
5% of the grade is for attending every class. There is a lot of memorization of her very boring slides.
She's a very rude professor whose tests require a lot of memorization. If you memorize EVERYTHING from the Cornell notes she posts, however, you stand a good chance of getting an A.
Extremely lecture heavy, reads off the slides, 150+ slides per midterm, much of it full of unnecessary/fluff material. Many of the questions on the midterms require memorization of extremely specific facts or are ambiguous. Terrible professor. Rating:would not recommend/10.
This class will kill your soul if you take it. The lectures and powerpoints are very boring with over +150 slides you need to cram for each midterm (there are four in total, but you can drop the lowest one). Then you have to pay for Examsoft to take the test which is $22.
Don't take this class if you don't have to, I repeat DON'T TAKE THE CLASS IF YOU DON'T HAVE TO. PowerPoints with over 100 slides which makes her go extremely fast, she goes soo fast she can't really explain her slides. Also, the class its an awkward combination of food, religion, chemistry, history, culture. Make yourself a favor and don't take it!
4 midterms but require a lot of memorization (about 150 slides per midterm). Tests cover a lot of specific content so you can't just skim over the slides; you have to re-read and take notes if you want an A. Getting a B without studying too hard is doable though. Sometimes can be condescending and rude.
She used lecture capture, so missing class wasn't a huge setback. Her lectures are very dense, but if you pay good attention and read over notes and slides a few times you should be fine, as she dropped the lowest midterm score. Had some interesting material, and she definitely doesn't deserve the bad rating that she has.
Let me break it down for y'all. She's easy and caring, offered extra credit to boost MT2 scores and extra credit overall for some easy assignments. There's a lot of slides but it's not that hard of material to go over. 4 midterms, lowest one dropped so no final. I got 92, 96.7 (extra credit booster on MT2), 80 and I didn't take MT4/final. TAKE HER!
Easy class. Seemed like she did whatever she could to get you an A. There was enough extra credit to raise your grade by 2 letters (ex B to A-). She also made herself available by offering 1 on 1 office hours before finals week (didn't use em though). I think her FST10 course is an interesting and easy GE to take.
she lectures very fast, but she posts lecture notes before class so i wrote my notes while she talked. the test were hard if you studied, there is a lot of information though.
Took assuming it would be an easy A (it's not). 3 midterms compromise whole grade, but lowest score is dropped. Studying was painful for these because THERE IS SO MUCH INFO. She reads straight from lecture slides, so attendance helps to retain info but isn't really that important. She gave us 3% extra credit because we needed it. NOT AN EASY A.
EASY A. I don't know how she was in the past, but when I took it last quarter, it was super easy. She gave 3% extra credit that was added to the final grade and let us retake the second midterm. (Open note, group work.) Whoever did not get an A range should reconsider attending the college as it might not be the right place for you.
Do not recommend this professor. One of the worst ones I have had in my time in Davis. She is not kind nor understanding. This was one of the worst experiences.
She is the worst professor that I have ever taken at UC Davis. Seriously don't recommend her class for an easy G.E.
This class is fairly easy but heavy in lecture. You are only graded on 4 quizzes and 4 midterms which was very tricky. The professor is very engaging and knows what shes talking about. She does not curve. Goodluck!
I have no idea why she has such a bad rating! Very simple class. As long as you pay attention to lecture, and study for about an hour or two for the weekly quizzes, you will be perfectly fine. Easy A so long as you are willing to pay attention during lectures. She drops the lowest quiz grade as well.
Easy GE, you can sleep in this class. Posts the slides. I dont take notes. Uses Tophat ($20?) Attendance: She shows a code that you have to type in for a point. If you have a friend they can text it to you. HW: None. 1 group project to make a video. I really doubt if the info she presents is factual. A relaxing class if you dont mind it though.
Excellent professor. Very smart
Honestly such an easy A class. She's changed the class so it's easier than before: 3 noncumulative midterms, attendance and 1 group video project. The midterms are all MC and are super easy. Absolutely no homework, just 2 lectures twice a week with no discussion. This class is exactly how GE classes should be, easy and not stressful.
Easy class but not a good professor. Sometimes gets unnecessarily harsh on students for no reason. The video project was graded really harshly and unfairly. False promise on extra credit.
She uses lecture capture so it's handy to go back on them if you missed something or want to review for exams. Her lectures are very interesting but can be heavy. Reviewing lecture capture and the tophat questions can help you figure out what's important to remember. I don't think she deserves the rating she has.
She's aight really nice professor, if you put in some work for studying the exams are not bad. She records all of her lectures so lectures are not mandatory. Group project for grade boost, overall decently chill class
Tests are pretty easy but you have to put in the work to get an A. She makes lectures entertaining and cares about her students. There is one group project but it is easy to complete.
As long as you put in some effort you should get an A. About half the class got As. You definitely need to study for the 3 midterms (all non cumulative, and no final), but they're doable. Only one homework assignment, which can boost your grade a lot if you put in effort. She genuinely cares about her students. More of a doable A than an easy A.
She was so enthusiastic about teaching lol. Her lectures were really easy to follow and the homework was straight off of the lecture slides. You definitely have to study the lecture slides if you want to pass the exams. Just a heads up, take notes on what she says even if it isn't on the slides because it could show up in the exam.
I don't understand the bad reviews at all! She's clearly knowledgable in her field, and her lectures were engaging and interesting. Nice person, too. Tests were fair and covered the class content well. If you expect easy A's from no effort, why are you even in college lol. If you put in even the slightest effort and you'll be fine.
I don't understand why Dr. Lungu has such a bad rap. This class was so enjoyable and resourceful. Of course, you have to work for an A and adequately prepare for midterms but they were nothing out of the ordinary. Dr. Lungu tries to make the lectures as enjoyable as possible and genuinely cares for her students.
I absolutely loved this class. I took the Food, Folklore and Health class and found it really fascinating. Lots of lectures, but well organized. Overall it focused less on the history of folklore and more about practical knowledge of food science that can help us debunk common nutritional myths. I spent about three hours every week on homework.
Dr. Lungu is an amazing teacher and cares so much for her students. She tries to make lectures interesting and fun. This class is more of a doable A than an easy A. You have to watch about 2 hours of lectures a week and then take open-note quizzes. As long as you study you will be okay for the three midterms. There is also one easy group project .
The material for this class was interesting and Dr. Lungu always tried to make the lectures fun. It isn't necessarily an easy A but it's definitely doable. As long as you study for the three midterms you'll be okay. There is two hours of lectures a week and quizzes so it's important to stay on top of your work. I personally enjoyed this class.
This class is an easy A+ and GPA booster/savor! Frankly, I'm surprised by the negative reviews. Sure the lectures are a bit long ( average 1.5 hours aweek) but you get to use your notes on EVERYTHING, except the midterms (non-cumulative +no final). Interesting topics, funny professor and I studied for the midterms for like 2hrs max. Take the class!
I know some kids struggles, but thats on them. The class was so straight forward. Although each week you got a good amount of lecture to watch. The tests and quizzes were all open note. Questions on the three midterms were all questions you were familiar with. Easy GE, however, you could get screwed with a tough TA. Overall, would take again.
You guys.... take this class. Seriously. It's an easy A while you get to learn how to improve and expand your knowledge on your health and diet. Sure the lectures are a little long, but the test questions are usually repeated and come straight off the slides. Not to mention Dr. Lungu is so sweet and passionate about teaching!
This class is a great choice to take online! Only one lecture or discussion per week so not a huge time commitment. Youre allowed to use notes on everything except the midterms, which werent too difficult either. Lungu is a very sweet lady, and I actually learned a lot! Also, one large group project worth a good chunk, so choose members wisely!
Dr. Lungu is a very easy-going professor. We're graded by weekly quizzes/tests that are very easy to do (especially since it is encouraged to answer questions as you watch the lectures). If there is a mistake in a quiz, or if a question is worded vaguely, she looks into it and makes sure they are graded fairly.
The professor is not very good at communicating, had issues when it came to assignment submissions and such and they did not try to help me directly. Lecture heavy too. I would stay away if you are looking for an easy GE.
Very lecture-heavy but overall she is super nice and very intelligent. Her accent can be a little heavy at times, but overall a great professor. Only 1-2 lectures a week and two quizzes. There is a pretty hefty group project but it is not too difficult, just time-consuming. If you want a pretty easy GE that is also interesting, take this class!
I seriously don't know why she has a bad rating. Lectures are all prerecorded and all of her quizzes are open note. She has 3 midterms but no final and the lowest midterm grade is dropped. The midterms are not open note but are really straight forward and I thought the video project was easy and not overly time consuming. Overrall, a nice GE class.
SUPER easy GE. Can put lectures in 2x speed. Sometimes took quizzes w/o even watching lectures and still got 100%. Midterms were all multiple choice and non-cumulative. Group project was a little stressful - just be sure to get a good group. Overall, easy A. Professor is really kind and enthusiastic. Def recommend
Honestly not sure why her rating is so low. Class was interesting and SO EASY. All you have to do is write down the notes on the powerpoint. Lectures are a little long but it's on par with how long a normal 3 unit class is. Tests are basically word-for-word from the powerpoint which makes studying extremely easy. Barely studied and got an A+.
DO NOT TAKE. Participation is MANDATORY for discussion AND lectures (also live)! and she does not teach rather reads off from her slides! If you are not in CHEM and have not taken this will be hard. she rushes over everything just to finish on time. DO NOT RECCOMEND.. Tests are proctored.
This is definitely unworthy for a 3-unit course if this course is not online. You will have at least 100 pages of Powerpoints for one week, and it is not just talking about food. It includes some complex chemistry and biology knowledge, which is so boring. If you are not good at memorizing things, I suggest not take it when school opens.
Professor Lungu is honestly not a bad instructor. I can tell she really loves to teach food science and enjoys the interaction with students. However, the mandatory attendance is annoying and on top of that she records participation with a buggy phone app. The upside is that if you do attend the lectures and discussions those points are free.
Organized class with clear expectations. 50% participation/attendance, so I went to every class and discussion, took basic notes, read my notes over for about an hour before each of three (non-cumulative) exams, and got an A.
Her lectures are very interactive. She does take attendance seriously though so participation is mandatory but this can be a real grade booster. Her lecture questions and slides prepare you really well for the exams but ensure that you pay attention to her explanations cause she sometimes would drop some hints or important points.
easy a class and all the materials are easy to understand.
Professor Lungu is very passionate about what she teaches, and she makes the class as engaging as possible. It was a 9 am class that lasted about 1 hour and 20 min, so near the end it was a little harder to focus, plus you had to make a friend in order to write a one paper worth 30% of your grade. Overall it's an easy GE 10/10 would recommend. :)
Plenty of slides, but overall the lecture is interesting. The professor really care about fostering inclusive discussion and in class participation.
Rated lowly because if you did not have any friends in the class it made finding a partner that you would like to work with impossible, for a one-page paper worth 30% of your grade. Also, midterms were proctored online with respondus and expected to be completed from Friday-Sunday, which was difficult with having roommates in the apartment.
Pretty easy, lectures are word for word of the midterms, it's alot of content though (science & chem stuff) The mandatory attendance & participation on a buggy app was annoying but the review questions match up. Non cumulative exams all online no final, several days to work on each, would suggest getting a partner early if you don't know anyone
Grade is extremely tough, you have to participate in every class, answer every question in the class. The midterms are also ridiculous, if you want to get a high grade, you have to remember every word on the ppt.
I don't understand all of the 1 stars for Prof Lungu for FST 010, it was a very easy class. Lectures are very straightforward and the midterms are pretty much word for word on what was given in the lecture. Hardest part is finding a reliable partner to do a research assignment worth 30% of your grade and critical participation through lecture Q's.
Class was pretty easy since there was only two lectures a week and no reading assignments. Tests are online, but require respondus lockdown browser. There's a partner essay, which is graded pretty harshly for the rubric guidelines. Participation is mandatory, however you just need the attendance code. Lectures just read off the slides.
Professor Lungu is passionate about her subject and it carries through in her lectures. She uses TopHat but you only need to do 75% to get full credit (graded on completion). Her lectures are interesting and informative (include clips/questions to break up long lessons). Sticks to clear grading guidelines. Take home midterms and no final.
Other than the fact that she speeds through lectures, she is a fine professor. Exam material is straight from the lectures; there will be curveballs at times, but it is still possible to get an A. There is a group paper which is graded fairly. Participation is a large portion of the grade so you should not skip class if you intend to get an A.
You'll get an A if you go to lectures (she lets you skip up to 5), memorize lecture slides (a lot of random stuff from the lectures were put on the midterms), & if you have a good partner for the folklore assignment (worth 30% of grade). She makes it engaging but tends to speed through the last 20 mins of class (slides are posted on Canvas though).
IF you're good, at memorizing(think 150+ slides)- guaranteed an A. if you're just decent, you still might scrape an A. tests are non-cumulative but not curved- q's are pulled directly from slides & lecture. uses tophat you have a 1pg paper written w/ a partner(cannot be solo)- graded slowly - rubric is a doozy ngl, just try to choose a unique topic
Dr. Lungu is a solid choice, but her lectures were fast and covered a lot of material. She does post all her slides though, which almost negate the need to take notes. The class was super easy, just three multiple choice exams and a short one-page partnered paper. If you need an easy GE or just want to learn a bit about food, take this class.
This class isn't difficult (3 non-cumulative mult choice exams & 1 page group paper, no curves) but it is demanding, unforgiving, and has shockingly high expectations for a 3 credit lower-division course. Professor was unreachable/disrespectful but the TAs were kind and helpful. If you need the GE credit, take the class. Otherwise, don't.
I took this class thinking it would be enjoyable. In these pandemic times of course half the quarter started online and the other half in person. Over 500 person class and attendance was still taken through tophat. Boring lectures and tests were based on memorization. Very boring and repetitive. Easy to get an A or A- if you study for midterms.
This class began online, and the other half in person. Even though there were over 500 students she made attendance mandatory which to me was idiotic given this class could have easily been online. Lectures were about 60-70 slides and she just read off of those. Midterms were not great, just based on memorization. Boring and not enjoyable.
Overall, I don't think Prof Lungu is bad. If you're decent at memorization, it's an easy A. Lectures and material were often redundant and could get monotonous, but there was also a good amount of interesting content. Three non-cumulative midterms and no final nor curve. Exam questions are nearly entirely from lecture or in-class participation.
The class isn't too difficult but the professor gets unnecessarily mad over small matters and is unapproachable most of the time. There are 3 midterms which she takes questions from tophat and make sure you study the powerpoints and tophat questions. There's also a paper so make sure that you have a good partner and you both put in the work.
A lot of memorization, 3 midterms that are not cumulative, each slide is 50-70 pages in length. Class materials are boring and the review sessions held by TAs before each test weren't really helpful...wouldn't recommend the class
All you really have to do is memorize. Reviewing the slides in class and taking note of the participation questions is key to help make the test incredibly easy. They're non-cumulative and the paper isn't hard at all. She can be very clear about what she is testing for so be sure to just lightly listen to that and study the slides primarily.
Great teacher and class; Professor Lungu is very passionate about the material she covers. But, attendance is mandatory (participation is tracked using TopHat), so there's little to no skipping lectures that you can get away with if you want to pass. Otherwise, coursework is very limited, with midterms and one short group essay. Easy GE
I personally LOVED the foods class, and learned a ton of take-away material from it (so it was an actually useful class). Lectures were fun and interesting, tests are purely lecture based (and TAs did review sessions before each one). Prof. Lungu is very passionate about talking about cultures around the world. easy class if you make/use Quizlet
This class was definitely one of the better gen eds I have taken at Davis. There is a fair bit of memorizing in the class, but nothing crazy detailed. The material is interesting and the professor had a great teaching style. If you attend all of the lectures and flip through the provided slides/in-class notes, this is an easy A.
Professor Lungu makes lectures very interesting and the material as a whole can be intriguing. Tests are easy for the most part and the paper is as well. Extra credit helps a lot as well. Overall solid professor.
Lungu does a good job at teaching a fun and easy GE class. There's 3 midterms which is basic memorization and super easy concepts to understand. Her class is mostly graded on participation through TopHat, so you have to attend lectures to earn points. There's a 2-person group project so make sure to get a partner quickly for that.
Nice professor willing to help. The lecture might include lots of knowledge needed to remember but it is not very hard. Students have to come to the class in order to gain participation credit which is about 20%. professor offers help if you have any concerns or questions. Overall, very interesting class.
Winter 2021. 3 proctored non-cumulative exams, attendance, & essay w/ a partner. Class was interesting, but lots of memorization. I'm good at memorizing stuff I'm interested in so it was easy for me. Class is tedious for just 3 units tho! Uses Tophat to track attendance but honestly I still managed to be slick and miss class afew times when needed.
I am surprised that Professor Lungu does not have a higher rating. Lectures are organized and enjoyable to sit through. Tests are not hard if you pay attention and review lecture slides. Participation does matter - iclicker is used for questions during lecture. Professor Lungu is incredibly sweet and approachable! Lots of TA's to help. Not HW heavy
terrible
not an easy A for pointless GE course. tricky exam questions that'll make someone who attended all lectures and took rigorous notes get B's on. makes you use respondus while taking the midterms in class because she's worried you'll cheat on questions like whether on not a cucumber is a fruit or a vegetable. absolutely useless information
Class is graded and set up so oddly. Tophat is extremely annoying to navigate, and a hassle to use when there are better ways to track attendance (ie iClicker). The material was not very interesting and seemed like random knowledge that wasn't very cohesive. Professor was adamant about using respondus lockdown browser in person which makes no sense
Her tests are hard, but fair. She did not have a curve, but did provide 3 different extra credit assignments that boosted your grade. The class grade was made up of 5% syllabus quiz, 20% participation, and 75% test grades. No final for the class, only 3 noncumulative 'midterms.' Literally no work outside of class beyond studying for the tests.
It is a very easy GE if you are willing to go to class and pay attention. Midterms are noncumulative and based mostly on memorization. Professor seems passionate about what she is teaching.
Easy GE if you go to class and pay attention. 3 noncumulative midterms and everything on them is in the lecture slides. Lockdown browser is used for midterms. Tophat is for attendance/participation. No work outside class except for studying. Professor is knowledgable but sometimes goes fast through slides. She is not doing the group paper anymore.
Professor taught based on several slideshows within each of 3 modules which were up to 80 slides each. She was passionate about the topics, but some of the test questions were written poorly. Attendance is required using TopHat, although it was a bit annoying to use it, it helped with the tests, as some of those questions were used.
This class is all memorization. Her tests ask such specific questions and it was hard for me personally to do super well on the tests, even though I spent countless hours studying with flash cards. And this whole class is basically just food science and the history of food, we barely discussed folklore and only covered health briefly.
Professor Lungu is a pretty good professor and her class is a really easy GE if you just pay attention in class, take notes, and overall put some effort in the class. She had three midterms and no final (each midterm covers one module), and they pretty much have questions from the tophat. She also has 3 extra credit assignments to boost your grade.
Lungu was funny and I enjoyed her lectures. Beware of lectures consisting of several slides and mandatory attendance, but is manageable if you put the effort (which I hadn't as much as I wanted to lol) grading is confusing too.
Super Easy A only if you attend class, class is mandatory and there's a code you need. Respondous lockdown browser is needed for all exams. fun Teacher, down to earth.
She was a very nice professor & really interested into the subject. I didn't find her class terribly hard, but you do have to study for the midterms if u want better than a C. There are 3 midterms all multiple choice, & no final exam. There are some extra cred opp. at the end of the qtr. Participation & attendance very important through Tophat.
you use TopHat essentially for this class. be prepared to memorize basically all of the slides(over 250 slides) that are for the midterm. luckily the midterms are not cumulative and there is no final :) ! I spent about 5-8 hours studying for each of the midterms. If you aren't good at memorizing facts then you will find this class challenging.
Professor Lungu has to be my all time favorite professor. She made things super understandable, and if it wasn't clear she was reachable outside of class. She seems to really care about her students. She even offered extra help to student on academic probation. The exams were non-cumulative. Memorization is key.
If you can not take notes or do not know how to properly study, do NOT take this class. I was asleep in half the lectures which did not favor me. The questions on the midterms are very detailed so if you want to do good, make to sure to listen properly to her lectures. The class was at 9 AM which did not help. Best advice is to take good notes.
FST10 is based highly around memorization of lecture content, but Dr. Lungu does a great job of making lectures interactive, engaging, and humorous. There is basically no homework, except if not all Tophat questions are gone over in class. I enjoyed learning more about the cultural and historical aspects of food from her class.
Chill and engaging class and she shows a lot of enthusiasm for the subject. Canvas was disorganized without TA support, which was frustrating and it took her some time to correct grades. Tests were all multiple choice, tended for questions to be phrased oddly and about minor details from lecture slides. Mandatory attendance tracked through Top Hat.
It's a 3 units class, feels like 5. TONS of memorizations. Lec long and boring early in the morning at 9. use Tophat to record attendance, it is a disaster and sometimes didn't work. In-person test, terrible wifi connection.
knowledgeable and charismatic. has many anecdotes up her sleeve, which make the lectures very enjoyable and help maintain focus & interest. take summarized notes, since the presentations go by very fast (she posts the slides). all you need to do well on the exams are the slides, so use those as your primary study material (tests are fairly easy).
Dr. Lungu is kind and intelligent, but I am just not enjoying this class. I thought it would be a fun GE, but the majority of the work is tedious memorization. I find myself stressing about remembering little facts that I will forget as soon as the course ends instead of gaining a deeper understanding of food science and cultural significance.
The class material is easy. too easy. easy to the point where when I arrive to class for our MANDATORY lecture, I regret my existence because I know I'm learn about the most outlandishly boring content and leave feeling like I just wasted two hours. She also uses Tophat, which in my opinion is an unintuitive and unreliable system.
fun, entertaining lecturer, cares about students doing well in class and understanding course matter.
Her Fst10 has 3 midterms, you don't need to take notes, because she will send it out, you need to memorize nearly 200 pages of powerpoint for every midterm. There is a lot of recitation, this course requires you to have a particularly good memory, and nothing more than that will get you a high score.

Uses TopHat and Respondus. Attendance is required, only allowed to miss 3 lectures. Three midterms, not cumulative, but would ask some very specific questions. Definitely an easy GE and I learned some interesting stuff. Her lectures are long and sometimes boring but you get all the information you need from them. Would definitely recommend.
Good GE to take but my one and only qualm: she posted a picture of kimbap which is korean and said it's sushi
The lecture material is interesting but there's a lot under each non cumulative midterm that gets pretty detailed (memorize the slides fr). She uses Tophat for attendance/participation during class, and also assigns homework on there if we didn't get to questions in class. But the most work you have to do for FST 10 is just cramming for midterms
The class is easy as long as you are good at memorizing things because most of the grade depends on the midterms and participation. I only had to worry about the class before a midterm and then go through lots of slides, which was tedious but you can easily get an A if you can memorize well.
She was awesome, funny, and a great professor. Yes the participation and mandatory lectures was annoying but you need to go anyways to do well. 3 midterms and 1 online take home test. No papers or homework, just TopHat questions done in class. Questions on midterm are super specific so actually study and go over the given study guide intently.
Well-versed and engaged in her lectures, with anecdotes to keep things interesting. Content-heavy with lots of memorization, mind you. Attendance recorded (Tophat) with questions for points: post-lecture homework questions due within ~2 days, but fairly quick to finish. Non-cumulative MCQ midterms, no final. No curves: extra credit available.
She uses Tophat for her classes so attendance is mandatory but you can miss three classes. the only things that go into her grade book are participation and three midterms. class is definitely an easy A if you memorize a lot of the material for the three midterms.
Required in person participation thro top hat. Lectures were kinda boring sometimes and some topics arent useful. Did not really learn much of the stuff mentioned on the course description. Exams were ok. Extra credit opportunities, should be easy to get an A.
If you are a STEM major looking for an easy GE to take, I HIGHLY recommend this class. There is no homework. Three midterms, but no final. No curve, but gives 3% very easy extra credit. Attending class (logging into Top Hat to log participation) is 35% of your grade. Attend lecture, study for the midterms, and this class can be a simple A.
Easy GE to take, I HIGHLY recommend this class. Three midterms, not cumulative. Participation does matter, as long as you're in the lecture you're set. Midterms are mostly exact questions from slides and study guides. Overall very easy, no homework, but still an interesting class.
As long as you pay attention during lecture (she's a good lecturer) and remember to do any homework that might get assigned to you on TopHat, her class was very fun and a good mixture of interesting topics. The class was split into the science of food, food folklore, and personal/global health, and most people found the science part the hardest.
Attendance and using TopHat are the main things that matter and for a GE course it's honestly not bad. If you just do a little studying and come to class then it's not hard to get an A considering that the midterms are not cumulative. Sometimes homework was assigned on TopHat but it's all really easy, and she is a decent lecturer.
I enjoyed this class, and thought Lungu was a great teacher. Attendance is mandatory and taken through iClicker, and we have three midterms throughout the quarter. The midterms were fair, and everything on the tests were concepts we touched on in class. She was clearly passionated about her field, and made the class enjoyable.
The class isn't too bad as long as you put effort into actually learning and memorizing the content. Some stuff I had already previously learned from bio/AP bio but a lot of the content was new and needed to be memorized for the midterms/final. All the midterms/finals are MCQ, though, so that made things a bit easier.
Extremely disrespectful when responding to your emails. Lectures are fine. Lockdown browser for exams and mandatory attendece.
Insane teacher that calls out students, forcing them to answer in a lecture of 500, if they don't answer she takes away their participation for the whole week. In addition, during a midterm she turned on her microphone to scream at a student for not having a pencil as backup even tho she told us the midterm was online. Don't take.
One of the rudest professors I've ever had.
She's been quite a difficult teacher to deal with. Attendance is mandatory and is taken through TopHat which sometimes fails mid-lecture. It's quite frustrating to have to deal with her if you have an issue with anything. She can be rude to students at times and has often created a bit of a negative classroom environment with her words.
Extremely rude. No critical-thinking required, it's all purely memorization (very mind-numbing) Tests were slightly difficult with some gotcha questions, definitely have to take time too study or else you're going to fail. Lots of EC though. Easy enough GE to squeeze B+ too A with mediocre effort, but teacher is really a hassle to deal with.
She is sometimes rude to students. Attendance is mandatory. For a 3 unit GE, I think it takes itself way too seriously and the class is a pain to deal with as it's mentally draining. Definitely going to have to tolerate some stress to get an A both listening too lectures and studying, which is all just straight memorization from the slides.
This class felt like high school and she was overall rude. She yelled at a kid for not having a pencil for a online test (tech issues made him take a physical). We had zoom lectures with forced participation and she criticized everyone's answers. Good information in the class itself just not the best teacher. For a GE skip Memorization heavy
Rude, vindictive, and boring. Poorly paced and disorganized lectures. Cookie cutter class with zero critical thinking, only memorization. Test questions are either gotcha's or terribly written. Singled out one student and removed her points when she didn't answer. Content subpar to watching food videos. I pity you if this is your only GE option.
fst10 is literally just memorizing useless facts for midterms (which aren't curved) and she expects people to participate. If nobody volunteers she'll just call on people or have a TA stick a mic in front of someone random and make them answer or else their participation points get taken.
You are usually taking notes most of the time in lectures. Her voice is, to me, pleasant and caring. Most of grade based on midterms and participation questions to check your understanding. Interacts with the class to make sure you're on the same page & talks about her experiences with food. Class is not easy, but lovely and enthusiastic teacher!
Midterms are mainly memorization from lecture slides, as long as you know the general idea of the lecture slides you will be alright. There is some extra credit that will boost your grade. The teacher is enthusiastic about what she is teaching and has many anecdotes she talks about during lectures.
She was pretty rude, but the class itself was easy. 4 Midterms, no final, participation is required. If you follow along the lectures, remember key info, review participation questions, make use of her review guide, and study, you'll do fine. Memorization is key. Quizlet helps a lot. As long as you put effort, you can pass.
This was my first quarter, so I wasn't sure what to expect from a GE. Good lectures but very memorization heavy. Also, sometimes, she calls on students to answer questions, which I did not like. There's 4 midterms, no final, and extra credit. Some Top Hat questions are reasked on midterms. If you don't do the extra credit, your grade lowers by 1%.
Dr. Lungu's classes could be boring sometimes because of the length of the lectures and the amount of material presented overtime. The test are manageable if you are prepared. What helped me a lot on the exams is creating a study guide beforehand. She also shares midterm review slides however, not all exam material will appear on the study guide.
The material is easy to understand esp with prior bio knowledge, and is fun to learn. There is rarely any homework, and as long as you study, you will do well in tests as it is memorization. Attendance affects your grade, so go to class on time.
very easy class, you just have to memorize and there's a lot of extra credit. but very scary and rude professor. forces participation in a class of 500+ and almost always singles people out when called on. even when people finally share, their answers are heavily criticized so you might as well not share. but if you don't you get yelled at
Class itself is easy enough but it's all memorization. She sometimes singles out students in a 500+ person lecture and is very strict on participation. Lectures quickly got boring. On top of that, assignments that are presented as extra credit are not graded as extra credit, so your grade goes down if you don't do them.
Very easy class but my god the professor is rude as hell. Always yells at us like we're in middle school and belittles the class way too much. Content is kinda fun to learn and tests aren't that bad (albeit a little unfair sometimes), but it's really easy to do well because of how much extra credit is offered (up to 5%).
Professor Lungu's class was very easy. I had Bs on my midterms and ended with an A+. The class offers semi-interesting information - mostly fun facts. She is a little scary though at times. Participation through attendance is a huge part of the grade. You're allowed to miss three classes and still get full attendance points
So the professor is okay, it's true she's a little mean to some students. Tests are pure memorization, which I am terrible at. I think my test avg was like an 80%, but I still got an A. Ignore the comments of her being mean, because she is EXTREMELY generous with the grading so it makes up for it. This is an EASY A if you do the extra credits.
Honestly an easy he for those looking for minimal work. There was no homework, just a lot of memorization. If you fall behind on lectures you can catch up because everything is recorded but a big part of your grade is attendance. Gives one take home midterm which boosts your grade!
Not very tech savvy and would put everything on her TA's. Easy class and everything on test was on easy to understand lectures.
Most annoying prof I have ever seen
This is the meanest professor I have ever had. Humiliates students if they don't want to participate in front of over 300 students, and will berate you if you get the answer wrong. Not to mention, she is a horrible lecturer and seems to go on and on about nothing, but skips seemingly important topics of the class. To sum it up, she's just mean.
Easy class with a very terrible experience. She forced students to attend every lecture and stressed students to answer her questions. Such a GE course supposed to make students interested in this field was made stressful and annoying by her teaching. She also humiliated students who fell asleep in a class consisting of over 300 people. Annoying.
Using tophat for class participation and exams. It's easy to shut down. unclear description in exam questions.
Horrible experience, avoid her if possible.
She does not have a single care for her students at all. Doesn't feel like she has a passion for the material and simply reads off of slides. Uses TopHat for participation and exams which usually crashes and if it does she will not fix your grade and instead blames it on you. Humiliates students if they answer wrong yet forces people to answer.
Her lectures are lengthy but if you go through the study guides and pay attention during lecture you'll do good on the midterms. Everything is on top hat and participation is majority of grade.
the teacher was a bit rude: she had her TA's cold call by walking down the aisle and picking random kids (so don't sit on the edges of the lecture halls) but answering the questions were easy. overall an easy A, i only spent the morning of my exams looking over the notes to study
Easy A, but mandatory attendance through live Tophat questions will make the class insufferable. The prof goes on lots of tangents, reads off slides, and is obsessed with calling on people. Overall, the course is a really slow and painful burn (especially with T/Th 80-minute lectures), so don't take it unless you have no other easy GE options
Dr. Lungu is a knowledgeable professor who tries to make her class interesting. However, she can be a bit confusing and overemphasizes participation (35% of grade) using TopHat attendance code + questions. Demeanor abrasive and condescending when trying to get students to volunteer; I'm almost 30 and felt I was being treated like a high schooler.
Lecture attendance mandatory using TopHat. Pretty easy, just a lot of memorization of information. Prof would call out people and volunteer people to participate in lecture. Once put microphone in front of a guy who was sleeping in her class so be careful. No other assignments besides tophat, exams, and the questions in tophat. Dropped three atted.
good professor
TBH Dr. Lungu was ok not the best but not the worst, she cares about helping students but only recently provided study guides and its hit or miss. Passing midterms with 80-100's are ideal to get an A, she also uses iclicker in lectures so you can't miss class unless you email her. Your only hope on passing are discussions and getting high scores
Attendance is mandatory using TopHat, but the class is relatively easy. Use unstuck study and the free textbook to prepare for exams, as the professor can be blunt and puts a lot of emphasis on participation.
This professor is rude and purposely humiliates students during a lecture of 500 students. The exams are easy as long as you memorize the slides she provides and use Quizlet.
After the first midterm, attendance is no longer mandatory. You can still use Tophat to answer questions for extra credit and access the slides. The class is easy to pass, and all you can do is use Quizlet and memorize the stuff she says. Misterm three is taken home; you can also take the exam with others.
If you want to memorize a lot of things for 3 credits, you can choose her, there is no curve, every test is counted in the grade, midterm is 95%, I would not want to take her class again
She is caring and hilarious during lectures. Nowadays, top hat is participation and she takes off 3 days if you aren't able to attend. However, I would recommend going because it is the only way you'll pay attention. Should dedicate a whole day to studying for her midterms, and if you do just that you should be able to get an A in her class.
If you not good at memorizing chemical and biological terms, don't take this course.
The lecture was very heavy with slides. Slide after slide. A lot to remember. The app top-hat that was used during extra credit was very helpful. The teacher is very passionate about what she teaches. She is also very kind and funny.
Dr Lungu is a good professor and is passionate about food science. The class had A LOT of lecture material to take notes on a memorize for a GE. No homework and one of the midterms can be done remote. I recommend going to class and answering in-lecture questions for extra credit. You can get a max of 13% extra cred by paying attention in lecture.
Fun and amazing class; great and easy GE,Tests are very fair and cover her lecture material, if it wasn't in lecture/slides it wont be on the test; easy. 5% of class was a syllabus test and the 95% was 4 midterms, attendance extra credit(can change). You need to study! just like any other class. Ended with 105%. Learned a lot!
Cons: lots of things to memorize. totally useless. took this only for GE. lectures are boring Pros: huge amounts of extra credit for attendance. materials easy.
Overall, Dr. Lungu is a very nice professor. She does talk pretty fast, and make sure you go to lecture for extra credit! It comes in clutch for sure. There's a lot of material, so make sure to study for the midterms. 60 questions each but they are straightforward. Some people say she is rude, but she is not at all. Very easy class in general.
she's is a good professor! don't be scam by the low rating. Lecture is heavy + exams have question on details. BUT the exam is only 60 mcq, most people can finish within 30 min. Plus, if she gonna test you on some specific concepts, she would be clear. lots of extra credit. No final, only 4 midterms, one of them is a canvas quiz.
A lot of memorization and the lectures cover a lot of information, but the topics are kinda interesting. Lecture participation isn't required, but it will give you extra credit. No homework, just 4 midterms.
Grade was graded solely on 4 tests (one online take home). None of the tests were cumulative, just info since last exam, even the "final." Attendance was optional, but earned you lots of extra credit at the end (tophat participation). Topics were interesting and professor had lots of stories to tell. All you have to do is study the material.
I did learn a lot about food from this class. Midterms(4 midterms, 1 online) require a lot of memorization, no final. It is not easy to capture every detail discussed in the lecture, but Professor Lungu offered a lot of EC opportunities (8% max to the total grade). Attendance is not required but you can earn ECs for participation.
Professor Lungu is passionate, but makes the class more complicated than it needs to be. Points are based on 3 non-cumulative midterms (45%), discussion (40%), participation (10%) and a syllabus quiz (5%). You have to answer 75% of the iClicker questions and the exams are online (BUT you have to use lockdown browser). Overall, an okay professor.
