Byron rocks. As a person, but not as a professor. He's very funny and enthusiastic about an otherwise boring class, which is great. His 'surfer-dude' attitude entertains, but isn't the best for teaching a complicated class.

Byron is an awesome professor! He is very enthusiastic about the most boring subject and makes it fun. He always has random jokes and has fun with the students. His tests are medium hard, but if you study you got the A. I totally recommend him.
Byron makes lectures on an otherwise tedious courese very interesting.
great guy. lots of fun, but tough tests. Dont take the class from anyone else. I would pay money for the kind of comedy he produces in class.
Great class. The man is hilarious. Some of the examples were a little off the wall but overall a great experience.
Great Teacher - Great class. Probably the only teacher at BYU who can incorporate Rage Against the Machine in his power point lecture and get away with it. He LOVES what he teaches and that helped me want to study. His tests contain A LOT of true and false questions which to me was very annoying.
adams is great.i didn't want to take the class because i'm not too interested in the subject, but adams made it an enjoyable class.he's funny and makes it easy to pay attention.i learned a lot and recommend taking him for this class.DON'T TAKE ANYONE ELSE FOR BIO240.tests are tough, but there are lots of free points in the class to make up for it
Great Class. I learned a ton. Don't take it from anyone else. I would recommend him to anyone. He's lectures are way entertaining and he is way hilarious. The class isn't very easy but if you go to the TA reviews religiously you'll do fine. Byron is the man!
this dude is a total bro.!! i put this class off forever cuz everyone told me how hard bridgewater was. I asked every bio student who the easiest bio 240 teacher was and no one even knew who adams was except for one grad student. when i asked him about adams he started laughing because he is so easy compared to the other teachers. The funny thin
Awesome teacher!
Loved this class. Dr. Adams is the man. He is so funny. Just make sure you go to the TA help sessions and read before you come to class for the quizes. Takes a little work to get a good grade, but I love the guy. I never thought Molecular Biology could be so interesting.
He's an awesome teacher. Makes the topic interesting and lectures are always fun to come to. His test are hard but fair and everyone can do well in his class. Group study totally recommended!!! :D
Byron is a funny guy, but the class is hard and often its hard to follow what is going on. The tests are pretty hard but fair. Study a lot and go to the TA reviews!
This class was hard. It requires a lot of outside work. Byron is a cool guy, but sometimes his analogies don't really work. It's important to go to the review sessions with the TAs to do well.
Dr. Adams was hilarious and definitely made the class fun and interesting to attend. Tests are hard, lots of (dry) reading required for in-class quizzes, and you WILL NOT do well in the class without attending TA review sessions. Adams is very helpful and courteous in response to questions. I definitely recommend taking from Dr. Adams
Dr. Adams offers a refreshing change of pace. He is very entertaining, and also brilliant. So, while class may seem all fun and games, dont let yourself get behind or underestimate the difficulty of his tests. Exams are hard, and you will need to befriend a TA in order to get an A in this class. Also, you will need to read a LOT. Choose Adams.
Great class but it seemed that Dr. Adams was just trying to impress the students. He has a unique personality that seems cool at first but then gets old. If you keep up on the readings and go to the TA sessions you should do really well. Tests are fair in my opinion not the easiest. Take your time and read each question carefully!
His "surfer-dude" personality is kind of a turnoff and comes off as not very genuine; it feels like an act he puts on to impress students. He is extremely intelligent (sometimes impatient with slower students) and has impressive credentials (which actually leads you to believe even more so that his classroom behavior is a farce).
The professor was really fun. Quizzes were practically impossible without TA help. Tests were pretty hard.
He has a fun personality that made this science class unique. The take home quizzes were impossible w/out TA reviews. Daily reading quizzes aren't bad if you actually did the reading. You should attend regularly, but I don't think missing a couple would kill. Tests were hard but possible. I scored well, but studied my tail off for this class.
One of the best teachers I've ever had. He is hilarious!
You have to take this class from him! He is hilarious.
You have to study a ton to keep up. taking it during the summer was a mistake. But byron is one of my favorite teachers. Funny, which made it easier to stay awake. Learned a lot! but tests (im not so good at) and his were fairly difficult, but not impossible.
he's a great person. His tests are really hard if you don't think how he wants you to. The book is worthless. Study his packet and class slides to do well.
Dr. Adams is pretty fun. He likes to give out sauce packets for good answers which is always a laugh. And he tends to put up random but hilarious pictures on his slides. But his class is really disorganized. The packet is a nightmare. I had a really hard time knowing what I was supposed to learn. oh and the textbook is difficult.
Awesome. Honestly how could you improve molecular biology more than handing out sweet prizes for correct answers during class?
Adams is a funny guy, good instructor, and genuinely nice too. Unfortunately he has no idea what is reasonable. Every day we read 50-100 pages from the text, tests are extremely difficult and you have no idea what to study. I have a harder time and spend more time for this class than I did for CHEM105 or MMBIO361. Avoid if at all possible!
Awesome class, awesome professor. He explains the material with enthusiasm and applies it to modern day terms to solidify the concepts. The tests are easy if you do the reading and follow the review sheets. HIGHLY RECOMMEND
This is honestly the worst teacher I've ever had... Interestingly he's also possibly the funniest.. Its his first time teaching the class... hopefully his last. He teaches nothing.lectures are pointless. you have to memorize the book and think his way to do good at all. Luckily basic class So I previously learned most material.
Terrible teacher. You learn absolutely nothing from him. His greatest concern is that students like him, not that they actually learn anything. More of a stand up comedian than a professor. You feel like you learn nothing from the lectures, then he expects you to know an inordinate amount of info for his exams. Avoid if possible!
This is a joke. He is seriously the worst teacher in the world. His lectures are completely pointless and you don't learn anything from him. He cares more about being funny and being nice to the students than actually teaching them biology. Worst teacher I've ever had. Avoid at all cost.
Wow, lots of harsh stuff here. I loved this class and DR. Adams. If you are willing to put in the work (go to class, do the reading, go to review sessions) you will do well and learn a ton. He does not spoon feed you and that bothers a lot of people. Dont let those below me deter you, Dr. Adams is an awesome teacher and this is an awesome class.
Dr. Adams expects you to THINK. His TA's hold weekly review sessions where you can go ask them ANYTHING about the material and those review sessions seriously saved my grade. Basically free one on one tutoring. The previous comments are harsh because they can't apply what they've learned. I really enjoyed this class, but I had to work for it.
Tough Teacher. Basic Material. Take from other teacher unless you plan to go on to molecular and want to learn a lot now. I honestly hated the class, but learned material in prior biology classes. Wants you to apply, which is great, but doesn't teach what to apply. Don't take. He's funny, but you'll you'll be sorry.Class is Easy A from other Profs.
He reviews everything you need to know for the test in class with you. All these haters clearly dont want to think. They dont want to work. You will learn more from adams than any other professor. Take it from him and you will not be sorry. I didnt know any bio before taking this class and loved it. I would only take this class from him.
Take this class if you are interested in learning a lot. If you came to college not to learn then go ahead and take someone else. His tests are a little hard but MORE THAN FAIR. His TA students hold weekly reviews for anyone interested. (Go to these). And he reviews the information for a full day before the test, telling you what you need to study.
Dr. Adams is an incredible teacher. If you are willing to put in the work and make an effort yourself then you'll do well. He keeps class entertaining and relates the material in ways that help it make sense and goes above the bare minimum. Both review sessions and study guides are helpful. I love this class and wouldn't take it from anyone else!
Prof. Adams is a good teacher. Don't expect to not do work, and especially DO THE READING. It makes everything else in class make sense. Also, the TA's are there for help, so use them. The tests aren't bad, just don't expect to not have to study.
First time teaching the class. Tried too hard to be funny in the beginning of the year, but after his mid-semester review Adams completely changed for the better. The class is very difficult for a 2-credit class, but he gives many extra credit opportunities (around 8-10%) and you'll come out of the class with a new interest in biology.
Best professor for this class hands down. He makes the class interesting and knows so much. You have to read the txtbk for in-class quizzes. He really wants to make sure you understand the material. Best class I've ever taken at BYU.
He'll keep you laughing the entire lecture and you're still learning a ton! Bio 130 is a more hands-on approach to biology, and I definitely recommend it to anyone who has an interest in majoring in biology. Take this class from Byron! It's my favorite class and made me love biology! He is also really approachable and makes the class interactive!
I loved this class! He's a way cool dude (he talks like that too) and you learn a lot. Overall it was a blast and not too difficult. I found that doing the reading helped. He also gave these awesome motivational pep talks before tests. I think he's the best for Bio 130.
He's a good lecturer. He's terrible at writing tests; the questions are always really subjective and unclear, which makes it difficult to get an A even if you know everything. Labs are excruciatingly boring and pointless (3 hrs, miss two and fail). Often assigns lengthy readings that have material you never need.
Difficult. Don't take unless you have the time to put into the class.
Professor Adams is a people person, which is why he gets some positive reviews. But as a teacher, he is horrendous. The readings for class rarely corresponded to the lecture content. He provides lists of material that could be on the test, but these are very inaccurate. I survived because I spent hours upon hours studying the textbook.
GOT AN A---barely. Did well on the tests. Got an A-, A, and A on the tests. Final was easier than the midterms. I worked hard and did every reading. I never missed class, but was late one time. This class you will do well if you just work hard. I got an A despite not doing well on the paper we write. I got a B on that I think. GOOD LUCK GUYS! take!
He is awesome. Would almost switch to a bio major to take more of his classes. Hilarious, and stuff he taught me has helped me out in several other classes. Kind of tough, but manageable, and he loves the subject. Really wants you to love biology as much as he does.
Professor Adams has a great sense of humor and, for the most part, did a awesome job with his lectures. I loved being in class everyday, Professor Adams is the reason I switched to Bio. Realize this isn't an easy class, I spent a ton of time in the Bio Lab getting help from TA's. Would definitely recommend, but be ready to work.
This class is very difficult but Bryon is the best! I want to switch majors just so I can take more courses from him. He is easy to get along with, and he wants nothing more than to see his students succeed. He also gives the best pep talks before exams. I would recommend the class; it wont be easy, but I learned so much and had fun doing it!
He co-taught this class with Dr. Johnson when I took it. They explained all the important material really well and had a great balance of serious teaching and more funny things to keep our focus. It's one of the most entertaining classes I've taken. They also took time to comment on the topics from a gospel standpoint which kept things clear.
This was by far my favorite class this semester. Dr. Adams Co-taught with Dr. Johnson and they were quite the pair! They made lectures so interesting and taught the material very well. They genuinely cared about their students concerns, opinions, and success. This class takes a lot out of you, but there are plenty of resources to help you succeed!
I took this class when it was team taught by Dr. Adams and Dr. Johnson. It's not an inherently easy class but they definitely make it possible! Be willing to study and take good notes during lecture and you will be fine. They also had great ties between biology and LDS religion that helped me learn how to better reconcile the two. Take this class!
My class was co-taught with Jerald Johnson. They were hilarious. I never used the book. Everything on the test is from lecture. TA reviews help. They offer extra credit for going on a date with someone you teach your poster project to. I really enjoyed this class. You do have to read Your Inner Fish by Neil Shubin and write a paper on it.
Dr. Adams is an entertaining lecturer, very smart, clearly cares about students. I loved taking 420 from him. Be prepared to put in some effort-- this class was just as much work as many of the 3-credit classes I've had (seven 2-page essays, final paper, 2 fairly tough midterms + final) and the best grade in my class pre-curve was 92%.
Professor Adams is funny but so much that is distracts from the class. He will also openly mock whoever opposes his views on evolution so beware of that. He has a true passion for his field of study but his field of study is not Bio 130 so I imagine his higher level classes are more effective, but in Bio 130 I learned very little.
Dr. Adams is hilarious. He makes Biology fun and loves to connect with his students. He's passionate about nematodes and evolution. The class isn't too bad if you do your reading and pay attention in class. Look at the study guides to know what you need to remember. If you fill them out and study them in groups, you'll do fine.
Professor Adams is a great teacher. He is super funny and makes lectures interesting. The class is hard but if you go to labs, office hours and put the time in with studying you will be fine. I really enjoyed his class.
Dr Adams is SO RAD- he's extremely smart but really humble and teaches in a fun, accessible way. He takes an interesting subject and makes it fascinating, and the class isn't too much work at all. I never read out of the textbook, just went to TA reviews and reviewed his slides. TAKE THIS CLASS
This class was too funny and I never knew what I actually had to study for the tests. Whenever an exam came along, I never used my lecture notes to study and I felt like I was studying for an entirely different class. I like classes that help me to pass the tests, not ones that revolve around jokes and being funny.
Hilarious professor, but tests can be a little hard. Tests consist of MC and essays, but if you memorize the slides, you'll do fine. Papers aren't too hard, but a grasp of principles taught in class help to get 10/10's on them
Some people might love Adams style of teaching, which is joke heavy, constantly sidetracked, and running behind schedule, but it wasn't for me. For an hour and a half of lecture, only about half was useful information (most of which could be learned just as well from the textbook). TA's do the bulk of the teaching in lab.
Adams is hilarious. He gets sidetracked often, so be aware and ready for some random stories. He does care though, and is easy to talk to. This is a hard class. Unless you're sure you LOVE science, maybe stick with BIO 100. A lot of the teaching comes from TAs and make sure to study and take their advice.
This class was unorganized. Lectures and study guides do not prepare you for the exams. Adams and Johnson were at least entertaining but often wasted time. My lab TA was not that great.
Professor Adams is a funny guy. He is easy-going and likes to answer students' questions, even if they stray from the topic he's teaching. The TAs for this class were most helpful in explaining how they were going to grade assignments, which made a big difference for me. Byron teaches, but the grades come from the TAs.
Half the class is super cool, the other half is DRY but Byron does 12/10 job at making it enjoyable. I was laughing every class. He made everything apply to our lives to make us better people- not the normal BYU church way (did that too) but in real ways. Not to be poetic but it isnt a class, it's an experience. A lot of papers but worth it.
Him and Jerry were fun & silly. The class itself was ok, but honestly I learned nothing real. They taught like 25 different concepts per lecture & went over really big things in biology for like 5 min and went over things we really didn't have to know for 25 min. TBH I felt like I was wasting my time. Study groups didn't really help & were annoying
Byron and Jerry Johnson team taught Bio 130. Both Byron and Jerry are hilarious and they explain things super well. They answer questions with ease and really know their stuff! The tests were hard, but not unreasonable if you attend TA reviews. You really don't need the textbook. Overall, they're some of the best professors in the life sciences.
Hes funny in a dad kind of way, and reconciles faith and science extremely well. The class wasnt a breeze but he provided the means to be successful. I took AP Bio so I didnt need to read the textbook, but doing so could only benefit. Highly recommend Professor Adams. :)
I took this class and the higher level evolution class at the same time, so it was a lot of repeat material for me, but Dr. Adams is really funny and kept the lecture entertaining. There was a fair amount of writing and some of the criteria could be a bit muddy depending on the TA grading it. Overall, a pretty solid class.
Buckle up kids, this is one of the hardest two-credit classes you will ever take. The lectures were great, but there is just SO MUCH content. Get ready to memorize... Adams did a great job blending science and religion. Lots of papers. Exams aren't too bad, but you NEED to study. There's a textbook but you dont have to use it IMO. Class is curved.
Dr. Adam's class was really awesome! He did a really great job making the lectures full of interesting information. The class had lots of tests that were heavily based on the examples given in the lecture sides. He required that we meet with study groups outside of class (1.5-2hrs/wk). This is a really interesting class but you need to study.
Byron is a really fun teacher, but not really the best for helping you understand material. He and Jerry Johnson taught together. Most of learning is done in lab with TAs. You have to write a paper on Your Inner Fish, which kinda felt like a dumb assignment. Tests aren't too bad if you put in the work. There are some good extra credit opportunities
This class was way too much work for a 2 credit class (more than my 4 credit 400 level classes). He is a tough grader and looks for any opportunity to take off points - it's not enough to just meet rubric criteria. Tests are very long and difficult and you have to know the material in great detail (tests are mostly fill-in-the-blank and essays).
Just expect to treat this like a 3-credit class. Byron is great but gets easily sidetracked. Go to the TA reviews, work on the study guides with your (required) study groups and you'll do fine. He brought snacks for everyone to the final, so I feel like that tells you what you need to know. Sometimes the TAs grade differently which is frustrating.
Byron team taught this class with Jerry Johnson. Super funny and really knew his stuff. Lecture was always very fun and interesting. Definitely would recommend his class to anyone, especially those that want to learn or have a short attention span (like myself).
Bio 130 with Byron and Jerry was my favorite class I've ever taken! They're so funny and teach meaningful topics that I found very interesting. The lectures are entertaining and they go over possible exam questions and let you know what to do to get prepared for tests. One essay, weekly lab homework, group studying, and some other assignments.
His lectures were great, but organization is not good. Half of the "study guides" weren't on the tests, and some of his assignments either made me feel like I was in middle school or weren't clearly explained. The worst thing was that they clearly explained the curve they'd put on the class, then they never applied it
So funny. I took this class with him and Jerry Johnson. I have so many pictures of them in weird and random costumes just teaching biology. Could use a LOT more organization though. Plus, a lot of reading. The only reason I got an A was because of the curve...
BYRON AND JERRY JOHNSON ARE SO FUNNY! They teach the class in a way that does not confound religion and science, which is something I am very careful of avoiding myself at BYU. They are funny and they had phenomenal TAs. Go to TA hours and you'll be fine. Tests are difficult, but they prepare you well for them. Bio 130 was fun because of them.
Byron and Jerry taught BIO 130 together. I rarely read the textbook - just for diagrams and questions. Pay attention to any posters and homework they assign, stay on top of the book and and go to review sessions and this class is easy! They do tend to wander during lectures, but attend so you understand the major points better.
Took this class with Byron and Jerry. They are some of my favorite teachers I have ever had. It felt more like stand up comedy than class. That being said they sometimes get behind on lectures but of you study on your own time you got this easy.
He and Jerry are so funny! Their lectures were fun to go to. It was difficult material, most of the people who did well are people who took AP Bio in high school, and they relied almost entirely on previous knowledge. For people like me who didn't, we had to basically teach ourselves the material. TAs are accessible and helpful, go to test prep.
He teaches his class like it's a standup comedy show. He gets sidetracked very easily, and his lectures can be hard to follow. All of his tests are largely memorizing lists, so GO TO THE TA REVIEWS. They pretty much tell you everything you need to know. Grading on tests and papers is very harsh, so study and put in a lot of effort on papers.
This is the closest any class has come to breaking my 4.0 lol. It was a little hard to know what/how to study for tests, and they're sometimes graded somewhat arbitrarily by TAs. That said, the course material is really interesting and he gives engaging lectures. Idk what I came away from the class really knowing, but Byron is a great guy, love him
WOULD RECOMMEND. He was so funny and a great teacher. Really made class entertaining and fun, without detracting from the educational part. If you do all the work, go to class, and study, you'll do great.
Prof. Adams was amazing! He was lots of fun, and explained topics very thoroughly and clearly. Lectures are pretty heavy, but they upload the slides to learning suite in case you missed something. Would love to take another class from him.
This class was with Byron Adams and Jerry Johnson team teaching. Byron was gone unexpectedly for most of the semester doing research in Antarctica but when he was there he was often the comic relief. He is so passionate about biology and stewardship and the gospel of Jesus Christ. The class took effort but it was so worth it.
I took anatomy and found it super interesting and fun! It is extremely memorization-heavy, so you have to be willing to devote the necessary time to preparing for lab quizzes and lab and lecture exams. My grades on the exams were very clearly correlated to how much time I spent preparing for it.
This class was dual taught by Dr. Adams and Jerry Johnson. Solid overall, their lectures were engaging and usually easy to follow.
I felt cared for, included and respected in his class.
I loved Prof Adams and Johnson (they teach together for this class). They are SO qualified and care so much for their students. Would absolutely suggest taking Bio 130 from them!
Ate an entire (9.25 oz) bag of Dorito's in class on Halloween as part of a "gamer" costume. Class was great, labs were somewhat off-track from the lectures, overall a great class. Whenever I asked a question outside of class, he would always answer and then provide extra information and background on the topic I asked about. Fantastic professor!
This was just a fun class. I don't know why other people complain about the workload; it was way easier and less of a time commitment than the other 2 credit STEM classes I have taken. Just memorize his slides and especially the TA reviews and the exams won't be hard.
If you took BIO130 from him and want another of his classes, this is not the one. There is almost no new material, though it is interesting stuff. There are 5 small papers and one major one. WATCH OUT FOR THE FREE RESPONSE SECTION ON TESTS. Not that it's hard, but that it's fairly long. Overall a pretty decent class, I recommend
I hated this class. It had so much potential but it was so poorly organized. Exam dates were moved last minute. Textbook readings are irrelevant and we were always behind in lectures. The only way to suceed is to memorize the TA exam review slides, like word for word. They say the class isn't about memorization but it totally is. I learned nothing.
Weekly group study session required, textbook is pretty irrelevant, schedule is a little messy up to the first exam but cleans up after that. Test review material will save your grade. Good class super funny, if you're here to learn then you will learn a lot, but if your just here to pass the class it would be easy to retain nothing.
Byron Adams was a great professor and I really enjoyed his class. I enjoyed his lectures because him and Jerry would try to make boring lectures a little more interesting. I did not enjoy how the class felt pretty disorganized. Some of the bigger assignments didn't give very many instructions it oftentimes felt unclear. The textbook is not needed
