Hippy...pretty laid back in class, but don't let it fool you...he takes writing seriously. Not really clear in what he wants sometimes...Overall, not bad, but not fab either...
HE IS WAY INTO METAPHORS ABOUT BUSES AND IS OBSESSED WITH TEEN PREGNANCY. JUST A LITTLE TOO WEIRD.
Hippy teacher, made me think I was in the 70's. he's a cool guy, kinda tough grader but a good teacher. Very understanding & helpful!
This guy should not be teaching English. He is completely unorganized, and wholly unprofessional.
I had him a couple of years ago, so I don't know about the bus analogy. However, he is a very nice, passionate, understanding teacher, but for some reason he kept calling me Chris after I finished taking his class. :)
this guy mistakes college students for 5 year olds... talks down to his students, makes you feel like you are back in grade school again... i'm suprised we didn't get in single file lines to leave his classroom... pretty easy A though
He is kinda different...but thats ok. He makes it so that you dont write for busy work. It acually counts for something. Writing the essay's were a snap and only had to really write two.
Byron is awesome! He can be a little weird, but overall he's great and cares about helping us pass. He puts more emphasis on the writing process than the papers themselves, so we only had 2 major papers the whole quarter. Highly recommend him.
Overall, not a bad guy. Willing to help if you need it. Had him for 101, and he was much easier then. Sometimes he is unclear on what he wants, and is obsessed with the bus analogy that really gets old. You'll know what I mean if you take him.
This guy is awesome. Sometimes he is excrutiatingly clear with his directions to the point where it belittles you. Other than that, he is extremely personable, helpful and funny. Get into his class. Listen for hidden messages when he talks to the class;)
Byron is wonderful! He is really easy to talk to if you don't understand something, and is also really understanding of personal emergencies too and will go out of his way to help you succeed in his class. Papers are easy to write. Highly recommend him!!!
He is very condescending in the way he talks to you. I was sick for a week and emailed him to let him know. When I came back I showed him a note he said, This is not high schoo you do not need to show me a note the way he said it made me feel like a child
Simply Brillinat.
Too much course work for the curriculum was on the syllibus.
Deceptive professor. Was told by him that he would help if student got into trouble, but when I came to him for help he threw it back in my face. Not cool.
Class was slow to start, but after workshopping several stories/poems, it became really fun. Creative insight makes the class and Byron interested.
I loved crews, he is so goofy but he knows what he is talking about. He was always there to help. His class is so worth taking and I know I learned more about life then english. He is a wonderful professor!!
Very interesting class. Byron is down-to-earth and caring. He respects students' opinions and attitudes and will take time to help and care. Awesome teacher.
Byron is a great guy (read his fathers novels, they're nuts). There was a comment somewhere about condescention. I witnessed a moment in class when he put a few uppity kids in their places, but truth be told, they got their just desserts. Very helpful, and very willing to read work after the quarter has ended.
Great guy. he is what a teacher should be-helpful for those who want to work. I busted my ass in that class, got an A and more than once he let some things slide that he might not have for someone else. Very easy-going and respectful of the kind of differences that one gets on a college campus.
this class was pretty much what i expected when entering my first college english class. byron was there if i had any questions on anything. i did all of my work and turned it in on time. i ended up getting an A in the class. just make sure you do all the work.
Byron is a great English teacher. I looked forward to going to class every other day. I am taking him for ENG 102 because he is such a great teacher. He makes English enjoyable. Take him if you can!
Byron is awesome! He's a great teacher, and a cool guy. He really cares about his students, and will talk to you about writing, and about life in general. He's passionate about what he teaches, and he respects EVERYONE in the class. ROCK ON~ take him if you can. Seriously. He's my favorite prof at WSU!
very rude. did not help students at all. if you have questions you better ask someone else. he picked on students the entire quarter. i would suggest taking this class with another teacher because i learned nothing.
byron is a good teacher i guess... Helpful but totally dismisses your comments if it isn't super liberal like he is. We studied the death penalty and he molded everyones opinions to fit his. Decent teacher, kinda hard...his ultra liberalness gets pretty annoying though (and i'm a liberal)
class was kinda fun because we debated the death penalty but most of the students sided with him and they got the grades. if u dont kiss his @$$ and dont think the way he does u wont do well in the class
Hes an ok teacher, but don't disagree with his stance on the death penalty, his head will explode! If you like writing 3 page papers due EVERY class period then you will probably like him. Look, all I'm saying is it's a good class, if you wana die. DONT TAKE HIM>>>ALOT OF WORK
Byron is awesome! His class is all about the death penalty. It is a lot of work but if you are organized and go to EVERY class then you will be fine. Just stay on top of things because if you get behind then it affects your other assignment due dates.
He's a fun teacher and all, but he's really biased!
he is a good professor. makes you work hard both academically and personally for your grade. his topic isn't the same every quarter, but my quarter is was global warming. yes, he is very biased as are his teachings. be prepared for lots and lots of research and papers to do. recommend for people who have time and are very organized! go to each clas
Byron was extremely difficult. I left his class almost in tears everyday. I am a very hard worker, but for him, it was a little overboard. I would not recommend taking him at all. He gives you papers due every class period, and his personality over all sucks. If you can, do NOT take him. We wrote every paper over GLOBAL WARMING
A wonderful professor! Very quirkey and fun but also a great person to just have a one-on -one discussion about life
Byron is the man. He's everything you want in a teacher. He won't hesitate to state how he feels in an appropriate way. I saw him check a student once, but the student was a prick so he deserved it. Great Guy this B. Crews......FOLK HOP FOREVER
Great Prof!! I absolutely left with a passion for writing.. You have to do the papers on time. You have to work hard on the papers. I left a better writer and use the skills in all my classes.
We focused on global warming, and most of the class time is spent in discussion. He's always "shooting" emails, and grades fast. Bryon loves to provide models for every paper/assignment you turn in. plan to spend at least 3-5 hours a week writing though
At the outset, Crews wants students to know that he is their champion and that he is always willing to go the extra mile to assist them in achieving academic excellence. Crews is accessible in and out of the classroom. He wants students to know that he genuinely cares about them as human beings and he's fully invested in their academic success.
BYRON IS GOD. ALL HAIL THE EMPEROR OF THE UNIVERSE, SUPERHUNKALISHIOUS. I WILL FAIL EVERY 4 YEARS ON PURPOSE JUST TO BE ECLIPSED BY HIS GLORIOUS FIGURE :))))))
This is perhaps one of Crews's greatest strengths. He's exceptionally skilled at fostering equal and open sharing in group discussions. At the start of class discussion, he clarifies that everyone has the right to speak, that everyone is invited to speak and that every student is expected to contribute. I always felt my ideas were welcomed.
I always love coming to class, he’s always interactive and caring. Very sweet in the eyes and isn’t afraid to step outside of the box. I’m really liking his new style of pants ;-)
He made learning fun! I enjoyed coming to class, even though I HATED the subject of global warming. (He picks a topic that you focus on for the entire quarter) It's alot of writing though, so be prepared to have some sort of draft or homework due every class period. As long as you put in the effort, you will pass his class with flying colors.
Mr. Crews created an environment in which students were comfortable sharing their work with others. In this environment, students challenged and supported one another. Mr. Crews responded honestly and constructively to all writing submissions and encouraged students to do the same when evaluating the work of their peers. He provided us with clea
My words can only go so far to describe how passionate Mr. Crews is about teaching writing. He is able to set goals and parameters for class work while also giving students the power to exercise democratic freedom. I was challenged and surprised many times by his capacity for teaching on his feet and reacting quickly to the subject at hand.
he is very passionate about teaching. class requires a lot of work, but it is english 102 and is to be expected.
Lots of writing but get over it, you're in college. GREATLY enjoyed the discussions in class yet they didn't help much when it came down to doing MLA citation. Byron went on & on about this website and what some people wrote (he does NOT take criticism at all!). Doesn't have a filter b/w brain and mouth. Says rude comments meaning to or not. :-(
An okay guy, but a little self-involved and pretentious when it comes to the subject matter. Uses a lot of papers too, when most of them aren't helpful at all.
I took Byron's honors course my first quarter. In the beginning there was homework every weekend which ended up being 2 assignments a week. After the 4th week he discontinued the weekend assignments. Byron is a great teacher and wants to help. There is a lot of writing but all the assignments helped me grow as a writer. Very passionate about topic.
Ok, so he was pretty much cool until the end, you have to show up for class its recorded for attendance, but he thinks he is always right, you have to speak, he picks favorite and they are the ones who get good grades... he told me i was getting an A and then gave me a C i tried to talk to him about it and he avoided me at all costs. So AVOID HIM!!
That's right. Attendance is required. If you don't come to work, don't expect to keep your job. He doesn't "tell students what they're going to get" at the end of the quarter." Instead, he uses portfolio grades to keep the focus where it should be: on the writing--and not on grades. He doesn't pick "favorites." You got a "C?" You EARNED it!
Imagine a "rate your students" site where each student had their own page, and unethical professors could anonymously log on and make false accusations about students. Here's a helpful tip: if you'd like to know the professor you're hiring to instruct you, why not schedule a conference, meet your professor, and address questions/concerns in person?
On the First day of class i wanted to drop it b/c I was afraid that I wouldn't recieve a fair grade because my views conflicted with his but Byron is a good teacher and he really wants you to suceed and he gives you many chances to help your grade. I really recommend, if you like writting and a comfortable environment, to take this class.
Seems cool at first, but if you are Conservative, I would not recommend taking this class. It is extremely hard not to disagree with his opinions..Yes, highly opinionated, and doesn't care what anyone else thinks unless you agree with him. Condescending when you ask for help. Know MLA before you take this class. Overall, he knows English.
He's a fun teacher to have. He knows playwriting and he'll let you write whatever you want. I had a lot of fun in his class and I recommend anyone to take it. You can get an easy A if you show up and have your work. Oh, participate. Easy!!
He is the epitomy of a liberal college professor. He is lost in his hippie days and lets everyone know it. Talks down America almost daily. Didn't learn any English in his class, only politics. Should be a PLS teacher NOT English. I served in Afghanistan and he did not like that and did not appreciate the military. Take another professor!!
I am a conservative and at times included these opinions in my papers. Byron respected my opinions and my grade did not suffer. Class discussions are definitely interesting. I took Honors and the class was not hard. In his words, we did not "move at light-speed"
Totally Rockin Class. Byron will come across as an ass in his syllabis & he will be if you do not do your reading or come to class. However, even if you don't love books, you should love this class. We had to read 5 very intense books in 9 weeks & write a critical analysis. If you are scared of books-beware-you will be challenged & enlightened!
Great teacher, what learning should be like. You need to read the books and participate in class but that is the fun part, everyones opinion mattered. Byron will start the disscusions but let the class finish he doesn't just stand up and talk. Great teach, great class, great books not ones that everyone has read I suggest taking the class
Great teacher who is really passionate about getting to know his students, getting them involved, and getting them to do their best with their writing. I would definitely take him again but you must apply yourself to do well. Over all a pretty easy class just remember to always do the homework.
Byron Crews was a great professor! He can be a bit strict with attendance and assignments, however he is understanding if you have a good reason. I recommend if you do not like to talk in class don't take him because class participation/discussion counts as 25%. Overall, really good professor at WSU. I'm even taking him for Eng 102 in the winter.
Avoid at all costs! Not really an english class but rather a way for him to vent his tree hugger views onto others. Wothless assignments.
Nice and helpful. Can be a bit arrogant. Got frustrated when we wouldn't talk in class but I really couldn't hear what he was saying. Lots of assignments but they aren't too difficult. Overall, not too bad of a guy/teacher.
Very arrogant and liberal, but invites opposing views as long as you can support them with logic and evidence. He thinks he's very philosophical and intellectual. His arrogance is annoying, but you learn to ignore it. You have to go to class and talk. You have to do many assignments, but they are kind of easy. Easy A if you complete the work.
A very liberal professor and I sometimes felt that my comments were bluntly ignored. The assignments were really easy and I've had more writing intensive classes in the past. Attendance is mandatory and interacting with the class is a large part of your grade. He's bearable, but be wary if you're really quiet or if you think you'll bump heads.
Any class with Crews is an enlightening experience. Some of the greatest discussions I've ever participated in took place in this course. We spanned everything from problems in the fast food industry to corruption in politics, even religion. You will find yourself wanting to come to every class. The man is a visionary. Not to mention hilarious.
Shy people and conservatives BE GONE! Prepare for rigorous discussions. Do the work, talk, get an A. Simple and fun. My favorite WSU professor so far!
Good Professor. Interesting class and discussions. Crews tries to engage the class and make everyone think. You'll do well if you try and you do all the assignments.
Great teacher who understands and will talk with the students instead of at them.
Great teacher! Gives great lectures and very good advice. I recommend taking any of his classes!
Crews is beyond wonderful. He is insightful, understanding, and compassionate. I was hesitant to take the class b/c they had said shy people beware, but this man does not force you to talk or anything. He simply encourages you to share what you think b/c he knows that you are worth it. He was a breath of fresh air in a college setting.
Takes his classes very seriously but does his best to ensure that everyone is participating in discussions and enjoying their work.
He is kind of rude.If you are quiet don't take this class because he will give you are hard time, however it does help to get out of ones shell. I thought the class was easy and he does have his opinions but he give good advice(sometimes).
INCREDIBLY liberal. Class discussions are filled with opinion questions that have clear "right" answers. If you're shy or conservative avoid his class.
Agree with most comments that he is very liberal. You must go to class and you must join in discussions. However, he does care about his students and wants them to succeed. I disagreed with everything he said and felt very awkward the entire quarter. He wants to you reveal personal info about yourself and "bond" together. Nice guy, but super hippy
Crews is amazing! He works at his own pace and has a great attitude! As long as you attend class and pay attention to the basics of the class, you're golden!
Best quality english teacher I ever had. You'll get your money's worth in your education if you take his class and pass
One of the best tachers I have had at Wright State. He is laid back and willing to let students have pleanty of input during class discussions.
Crews is an amazing professor with great insight. A lot of people are complaining that he is liberal, but I did not see much of that in my class, mainly because it is a discussion-based class and Crews does not talk very much unless adding insight to the discussion. Overall - GREAT CLASS!
Byron was the best teacher I have ever had. He takes a very invested interest in your success and genuinely cares about your grades. His class is challenging but overall a wonderful class experiance. Very very very highly recommended!!
byron was a very good teacher. he cared about the students and strived to help them and work with them the best he could. you have to work to get a grade but its alot easier to work in a class when you like the teacher.
Amazing! The best English instructor I've ever had. Very hilarious man. He's like a cross between Willy Wonka and patch Adams. He danced on the first day of class! He will work with you if you are having personal problems, just communicate with him. You Will learn life changing information in this class.
I loved Byron. I thought he was an absolutely insightful, charismatic and caring lecturer. He is genuinely concerned that his students open their minds and perhaps learn something!
Class is easy as long as you are good at getting your work done on time. Otherwise he says he reserves the right to fail you for the entire class if you miss even one assignment. Otherwise this is a good class. I definitely like Byron as a teacher and he makes the class interesting for us :)
He is great! Turn in your work and show up. Super easy
I signed up for an English class, not Political Science. I didn't learn any English. I just learned about his opinions. He can be rude at times and repeats himself A LOT! Class shouldn't be mandatory since everyday is the same boring thing.
Honestly, Byron is one of the best professors I've had. He's an open-minded person and really cares about the success of the students. I've been challenged and learned a lot from him. He encourages students to teach each other. This is one of the few GE courses I've had that actually changed my life.
This class is pretty easy. Simply do the work! Class discussion is fabulous! The only problem is that he uses way too much sarcasm.....
He is wonderful! The course content was great too! Highly recommend!
Crews is the best English teacher I've ever had. He exposes the hidden truths behind food production, and he's got a hilarious ironic sense of humor. You'll learn a lot and enjoy the assignments. And Crews actually cares about his students.
Bryon is a great person, he is helpful and caring. He doesn't make you buy a textbook. He posts everything online. He might be liberal but cares about others opinions. I think everyone needs to take him for some class, he will change your views on something!
Such a weird guy, he never tells you anything clearly. He is really confusing and dances around what he want you to do and gets REALLY mad if you don't do everything perfectly. He is very liberal and is really mean to people, but its an EASY A
The commenter below me was in my class, and you can tell she got her little feelings hurt because her beliefs were challenged. He was clear with assignments and incredibly helpful, and if you participate you'll have a great time and learn a lot. If you like to sit back and stay silent all semester like the person below, then find a different class.
Great Professor! Topics in the class ALWAYS relate to problems each and every person continually faces. Very interactive. No group activity, just open discussions during class. A few writing assignments, but nothing compared to other courses.
Being a rather shy person myself, I was unsure of taking this class at first. But, to be honest, I enjoy Byron as a professor, he's very open-minded and nice. I do agree that he has a strong liberal stance, but overall I enjoyed going to his class and he never badgered me about not talking! Great Guy!c
Easily one of my favorite classes! I wasn't too excited about Dramatic Writing but I really started to look forward to his class. He's open, witty, and loves discussions. (he's also nice to look at imo)
Byron is probably the best teacher I have ever had. If you want a teacher who takes the time to get to know you as a student and provides you with the opportunity to get something memorable and meaningful out of class, take his class. There is one big project in his class, but I actually learned a lot by writing it. What an amazing person!
He seems like a strong liberal that wants to shove view at you but in reality he wants you to learn to think for yourself. As long as you understand the theme of the class and do the assignments you can get an A easily.
Crews is an Evangelical Arch Conservative Liberal Buddhist Muslim Blues Baking Hindu Atheist, a master of the Black Arts and Juggling. He will put a curse on all our children, and they WILL be born naked. Professors who don't share their own views are boring. Gonzo professor He models critical thinking and allows students to teach. The BEST.
Great professor!
He has been my favorite teacher so far! He wants class participation but he wants it because he actually cares about his students, he wants the best for them
He has been my favorite teacher so far! He wants class participation but he wants it because he actually cares about his students, he wants the best for them. I loved the class!
Byron is a great professor. He is very laid back. Make sure you go to class because he takes attendance at the beginning of each meeting. He is a stickler on participation so speak up. Some of his assignments were kind of confusing but other than that he is generally pretty easy.
Really fantastic professor. He truly cares about his students' work. He gives almost two pages of in-depth feedback with each assignment. I asked to discuss character development and he spoke with me after class for 20 minutes. Expect to dive into intensely personal subject matter. The class requires honesty and enthusiastic participation.
Byron has been hands down my favorite professor ! He is a great person and makes you want to inspire others. You need to show up to his class to pass because he takes attendance every class meeting. He will make you laugh. He wants you do to your best. He loves his students to speak up and be involved in class don't JUST show up; be apart of it!
Byron is a man who loves the sound of his own voice. He expects answers to all his questions, even though most of them are rhetorical. Be prepared to participate. EVERYONE must participate. His courses are not easy... Be prepared to do a lot of work. He also makes you print EVERYTHING, so invest in a printer. Didn't enjoy. Wouldn't recommend!
Why bag on Crews? He's the coolest professor at WSU. He includes everyone in Democratic class discussions. The student below hasn't even completed the course they're evaluating. In the first 4 weeks, we've viewed one TED Talk and we're working on a large project by completing it in installments. Manageable. Fun. Get a printer. Participate. Scared?
Byron is by far my favorite professor at Wright State University. I would definitely go as far as saying he's my favorite teacher/professor I've ever had. The open discussions are fantastic, it's like you're talking to a good friend you've known for years. The class can be difficult... if you don't put in any effort.
Byron Crews is hilarious, inspirational, and encouraging to students. He has many open discussions where he will pose questions, used to make students think independently-trust me you will learn a lot in this class. Participation matters quite a bit. Writing may be long, but the assignments and class are relevant so it's a breeze.
Byron is an awesome instructor. His methods for keeping the class involved with conversation kept the class alive and interesting. I honestly looked forward to attending his classes; however, avoid the 8am time slot...
Byron is by far the best writing professor i've had. He is so respectful to everyone, and he was encouraging of everyone's writing. He wanted the class to have a positive environment, and it was the best work shopping class at WSU
Byron is a fantastic professor and genuinely cares about his students. Teaching you beyond that of the course materials, his humorous and laid back personality makes an excellent learning experience. If you want an inspirational, thought-provoking, reasonable, interesting professor, then he's just the guy for you. I loved his class!
Anyone that asked a question he made you feel stupid. So I'm terrified to ask any questions.
I dont feel stupid. And Im not afraid to ask questions. Crews cares about his students. Its obvious. Hes kind and caring and funny. Im learning a lot about how technology influences relationships with self and others. Crews runs great discussions that are open-ended; spontaneous. We play with ideas. Crews encourages empathy and courage.
Crews will change your life. "Knowledge is Power." Take his class!
I ran into family problems, and Crews negotiated with me for an extended deadline. He was really open and supportive. I've never had a teacher who really cared who treated me like a human being before. Crews helped me with my assignment, and he helped me with a strategy for dealing with a personal issue. Cool Dude. Take this man's class.
If you can get past his whacky ironic humor (he should have gone into stand up comedy), Crews's class is a riot. Are you addicted to your technology? Are you Phubbing? Seriously, take his class. You will laugh and learn -- and you will make friends. Hilarious -- and sometimes intense -- discussions. Clear grading rubric; revise for a higher grade.
He was an amazing professor. Made sure to help his students whenever they were struggling. He is very inspiring and is only there for the students. He makes sure to "Reclaim Conversation" within the classroom environment. Amazing professor and would definitely take again!
Fantastic professor. Hilarious. Make sure you participate in class, it's for your grade. Very understanding and accessible outside of class.
This professor is tough toodles!!
Great person but his style doesn't work for everyone. Requires textbook but barely uses it. Time is spent in discussion and presentations, not many assignments. Avoid the early times as you won't be awake enough to want to participate as loudly and enthusiastically as required. Easy class but will be painful if you dislike discussion classes.
Consistent textbook use. Many assignments. Be ready to write -- and think critically. Class discussions are engaging and informative. You will give a PowerPoint presentation. Best professor I've had at WSU. Take the 8:00 am class. It's actually FUN!
Crews was an amazing teacher! He showed that he really cared about his students and was willing to be there for them in anyway possible. Very down to earth and understanding of life. In our class we did 2 presentations and a lot of group discussions. Participate, joke, and just be present in class and you should easily get an A!
Crews class will challenge you, and he'll prepare you to write across the curriculum. Our focus was academic argumentation; how to compose an ethical argument; well-researched in authoritative academic databases; with an emphasis on supporting claims with empirical evidence. Crews is energetic, funny and inspirational. The Man. Take his class.
Byron was one of the most creatively supportive professors I've had the pleasure of having.
Crews on fire for truth and justice. This class will teach you how to think critically and writer for college.
You need to participate in class discussions! They are not so bad if you know what you're talking about and do not back down when he challenge you. Remember always have facts to back up anything you say. He does challenge you everyday! He does care if you care too.
Byron wants you there for every class. I have not learned anything all semester because he never stays on topic. Every day is very boring and he assigns random assignments just to keep the class going. He does not grade anything but does ensure you have assignments completed on the day it is due. If you like to talk about random things heavily, yes
Every class with Crews is an adventure. He's the best. I like Random.
I learned about the diffusion of responsibility, the academic aims of argument and how technology influences our relationship to self and others. How in the wrong hands, it's corrosive to an education. Crews assigns grades of "Satisfactory/Unsatisfactory," so we can improve. I asked about my standing letter grade in the course. Just talk to him.
Genius.
Crews is always willong to negotiate. He understands college is stressful. If you run into difficulty, he doesn't just teach. He'll assist as your advocate and help you get where you're trying to go. In a world of robots preparing students to be robots, this man is kind and caring Human Being.
Byron Crews is a fantastic teacher. He truly cares about us learning, and provides excellent opportunities to improve our knowledge on the world and the English language. Absolutely recommend anyone to take this class.
Byron is amazing. I really suggest his English class. He is always off topic and hilarious and the homework isnt hard. He knows we all are stressed and tried to cater to that. 10/10 would take his class again. Ive learned a lot about everything not just English.
Byron Crews treats his students like genuine human beings. He adds humor to his lectures and encourages debating and hearing the different viewpoints on topics. Make sure you attend his lectures, as he'll take off points for so many absences.
Professor Crews is truly kind and caring. However, his class lacked structure. It was generally discussion based. The course grade was affected by how much you participated in the discussion. He understands that students are busy with other courses, as well as with life, and considers this when assigning work.
