Oh lord!! Give me strength to stay awake!! For the first month or so, he didn't even wear a stupid microphone so half the class couldn't even hear him talk. It's actually better that way, b/c the sound of his voice and the topics will make ya fell asleep
Very good prof, interesting things to say, great class
Very interesting, eye-opening class.. Prof speaks very well, very pleasant/open. Some apparently find that a bit boring. In any case, it's better than someone who's arrogant and condescending.
I found this course to be very boring. There seemed to be an excessive amount of reading to do plus all tests require you memorize specific ppl w/ specific details. I think that I have changed my mind about majoring in UBST after taking this class.
overall a good prof. i find he has a somewhat bias view on a lot of issues, but if you can get past that he is very interesting and passionate about the material. his tests are fair and i enjoyed the projects. takes A LOT of time off for other things...
He makes it so interesting, I don't understand how anyone could find it boring, it's the best class I've taken
Good prof, can be a little bit long winded and can get off topic but presents really interesting subject matter and is genuinely nice.
Really nice guy! Tends to talk about the same topics, but overall, he says interesting subject matters. Hope to hear a lot more Canadian perspectives instead of American. But overall, he has easy tests and assignments. UBST 201 ROCKS!
interesting topics and encourages group discussion. He can be biased about a lot of things. He frequently has guest speakers because he is out of town, or he cuts class short. interesting courses tho...
Probably the least objective man I have ever met. Not only that, ideas he likes regarding urban planning/design all contradict one another. Must have made a very ineffective planner if he can never come up with a plan!
Subject matter interesting, but lectures terribly unstructured. He rambles on for a while about the same things over and over again.
Good teacher, good classes. His overheads are infamously illegible and small. Loves Europe, loves talking. Uses proffesorship as a personal soap-box. But you'll learn alot, and he selects good readings.
He is not very organized with his lectures...the overheads are usually confusing (sometimes he doesn't know what they are about!). But, the readings are interesting, and he is an easy marker. he is most interesting when you can get him off topic. I AGREE with his biased views!!
By-Ron is a great senior level prof. Although his class was similar to UB313/201, he is still able to challenge your views on cities. If you refrence the readings, His questions are so open that essays and exams are more liberating than a chore. A proff you'd love to discuss society over beers.
Interesting course, but poor teaching. First half of class is spent rambling off-topic, and other half he basically just repeats himself. Not helpful to students outside of class. Easy marker, though, since the TA marks everything.
Best prof ever! despite the hard to read overheads (it's not like you need them anyways with most of his stuff being take home) I would recommend any miller class but only if you are willing to put in at least some time! He is heavy on the readings
This class is really interesting and Dr. Miller makes lectures engaging - but sometimes you just can't help but fall asleep. He spends too much time on some topics - but is fair and won't put material not covered in lecture on exams. Exam study guides are exactly the same as the exam. Just be wary that he takes FOREVER to mark stuff.
Very knowledgeable in his field, but can be repetitive. Gives far too many readings (textbook + additional pdfs), going to class is HIGHLY recommended and taking notes because it is basically a summary of the readings assigned. ALWAYS do the study guide he gives for midterm/final, as they are very similar questions. Lectures can get very boring.
Very good instructor. Make a chart of authors and concepts to study. A LOT of reading--he is clear about that up front. Study guides are exactly the exams.
Tons of material and readings for a 2nd year class. Not a bad guy, but teaching style honestly boring. Sit way up front if you want to hear at least 50% of what he says. Midterm was extremely ambiguous - class average was in the range of low 60s and marks had to be curved. This was probably due to how the m/c midterm was written...
Miller's class helped me finalize my decision to becoming a Geography major. I never once read the materials online but instead I went to every class and listened. He does not prepare any Bb notes but speaks from the mind. He is truly a profoundly engaging person. Review the exam prep questions, a few of them were found on the final.
I found this class extremely boring and non productive. The prof didn't make it any better with his rambling on and on. You could barely hear him and he lectured the entire time and if he did have something to show the projector would be blurry, but what did he care. I will never take another class with him.
This class was very boring, didn't find the lectures engaging at all and he was rather biased and tends to ramble on a lot. Tons of readings, didn't do any of them and still ended up with a good grade. He also uses a lot of his review questions on the final. I wouldn't take another class in this area or with this prof again.
Byron constantly goes off on a tangent and is hard to understand through all the mumbling. The way he presents material is boring but paying attention saves you the effort of reading the text by a lot. He does seem like a nice guy though.
Best prof ever. Encourages discussion and critical thinking. Engages students and relates material to applicable events happening. I noticed that his poor ratings are from first year courses - no surprise there. The classes I've taken with him are the best classes (material & teaching wise) in my whole degree. I've learned (and retained) SO much.
Had him for UBST253 a couple years ago and thought he was a lot tougher then. This class was great though. Two take-home exams and a paper. Lots of readings, but don't really have to do them as he goes over the main points in class, so make sure you go to the lectures. Having the notes made the exams a breeze. Was a generally easy A.
This guy knows his stuff. All of his classes (upper and lower level) require a lot of reading, BUT if you just go to class and take really good notes you can get away without doing them. In Upper level courses he has take home essay midterms based on readings- good notes make these super easy. Learned a lot from him in my degree, nice guy.
Discussion involves guessing one word answers to his questions. Not really useful discussion at all. Textbook is useless. This prof admires certain authors, if you cite them often in your papers you will receive an A.
Great teacher, great class. Teaches outside the box ideas, and talks about current issues. If you want to learn his classes will teach you. Heavy reading, but by going to class he summarizes everything, you just need to take notes.
Interesting class with good discussions. A lot of readings, but as long as you show up, pay attention, and take notes you'll be fine. Great prof, he knows his stuff.
He makes you SLEEP! SO boring although it a bit interesting, but it's just his voice that makes you falling sleep. If you are a fan of reading go for it. But it's extreme what he makes you read for every single class. He knows his stuff. Easy marker.
Hands down one of the best professors I have come across. Makes you think outside the box with many interesting topics. UbstOne 565 should be a must for every single person in university. This guy should be the mayor.
I would take any class with Dr. Miller. He's interesting, engaging and passionate about the material. Of all the classes I've taken at post secondary this was hands down my favorite. Having said that there are a lot of readings, but most are actually interesting. I'd tell anyone to take this class, especially if Dr. Miller is teaching.
Dr. Miller is a fantastic prof. Incredibly knowledgeable and passionate about his field. He just comes in and talks, I find it much more engaging than the profs who just read ppt slides verbatim. LOTS of reading, but go to class and take good note and you'll be sure to do well. I'd recommend this class to anyone.
Dr. Miller's classes are interesting and he presents the subject matter in a way that is easy to understand. He does assign a lot of readings, but the trade-off is that he is a very fair marker. I would recommend anyone in the arts take a class with him, he's insightful and will change your perspective on many things.
He has a very monotone voice. Beware... he posts A TON of readings online. He can seem a little high nosed at times but otherwise he is alright. If you go to class and read the textbook I think you will do fine in the midterms. His lectures are basically going over certain online readings.
Dr Byron Miller is the best professor at the uofc. The amount of knowledge I gained from attending his classes - geog 253 and geog 351 is unbelievable! It’s like I was living in a different world before attending his classes!!Where has he been all my life!!!
Dr. Miller is a fantastic professor. He prepared me very well for grad school in just one course. He is very thorough and there is a ton of readings, but do them and you should be just fine! Definitely one of the best professors I have had!
There is a ridiculous amount of reading in this class. If you go to the class and listen to his boring lectures you can avoid doing the readings. So either read at home and skip class or go to class and fall asleep. Pick your poison.
Great professor. Very interesting to listen to and has a lot of great things to say. He knows his tuff, and he effectively passes that knowledge on to the class. Some people may find it slightly boring since it's all talking, but if you are into this topic, then this class is for you. Excessive readings. Tests are fair, and projects are cool!
Dr. Miller is very knowledgeable. He talks a lot about the material, so to someone who isn't interested in cities much may find his lecture style to be boring. Although he treats his students respectfully, he has a strong elitist vibe. His midterm was incredibly easy, but his final required some serious studying. Generally a good prof.
Infuriatingly boring and pretentious. Talked at the class without the use of any visual help. Excessive attempts at class discussion, which is fine, but not in a lecture hall with hundreds of students...no one could hear each other. To do well you had to read and know the authors of about 50 long "pieces" as he called them. Worst class ever taken.
This is the most boring class I had all semester, assigned readings is REALLY excessive as well a lot of memorization, for an option in my faculty, it's too much. The class is too big to hear anyone speak. If you sit in the back you can't hear him. The TA marks the papers & is nice about it. I would not recommend for those with a full course load.
The most boring class I''ve ever taken. His speaking voice will better you to sleep while he rambles on about things completely unrelated to the class.
Expect a lot a ton of reading that may seem dry initially. If you like sociology, cities, and politics this class if for you. I found the lectures fascinating and thought provoking. Learned a ton! Take good notes in class.
Dr. Miller is an awesome prof. He is extremely knowledgable and passionate about urban politics. This course was not an easy course, which is to be expected of a 500 level course, and there was insane amounts of reading but it was definitely interesting and worthwhile if you're interested in the field of urban politics.
Worst class I've ever taken. Lectures are boring and very long. He uses no slides to engage you and if you skip class you won't know what's happening. Waaaay too many readings required.
Go to class and fall asleep to his droning voice OR Skip and read 30+ pages of (sometimes interesting) articles. Does NOT use slides or anything unless it's a slideshow of pictures he took on his adventures during the semester. More often than not, late to class (for the midterm too...) Takes over a month to mark midterm.
This course could have been interesting, but his lectures are long and dull, he assigns crazy amounts of readings for a first year course, and has shown one too many photos of his personal travels. He has tried to cram far too much in the course, it would be better split into a year long course so you could really get to know the information.
There's a ridiculous amount of reading's and the material is incredibly dry. Least favourite class I've taken in my life.
His lectures are definitely not what you would usually expect. That being said, taking notes of everything he says can be super useful. DEFINITELY take note of the urbanists that he agrees and it will help you out. Found the final easier than the midterm to be honest, and his film review project are pretty easy marks. Attend class!
Attend all lectures and take detailed notes and you will have all the information you need to succeed. Great lecturer, very knowledgeable.
The Prof is terribly boring and has unclear grading criteria and expectations. The volume of readings is way to much for an intro course. He is also terribly boring and more often then not late to class. He has no slides or organized materials other than photos of his travels. Avoid this prof.
His lectures are so boring and he follows the textbook to a T. Everything we learned comes directly from the readings in the textbook, of which he assigns way too many for readings.
Lectures are long, but he is easy to listen to. I think he has some important opinions about urbanization. You are expected to know the readings and I would recommend staying on top of them. Overall, Bryon is incredibly intelligent and I would recommend him.
Dr. Miller is a nice guy - however he assigns a lot of reading which he has no time to go over because he's too busy going off on a tangent. I mean if youre gonna assign that many readings - at least utilize your time in class to explain them rather than explaining them in the last 5 mins of class. Takes a month to mark assignments.
Byron doesn't provide any slides, assigns way too many readings, and he doesn't even go over them in class because all he does is go on tangents and then tries to go over the readings in the last 5 mins of lecture. Don't bother going to class, just stay home and READ. His grading scale is high (A+ is a 99), and he takes months to mark stuff. Awful.
I really enjoy his lectures -- he's a very eloquent speaker and always has very keen insights on issues of urban politics. There are a lot of readings so do your best to stay on top of them, don't procrastinate the assignments (which are super easy, as long as you invest yourself into the literature).
This guy assigns WAYYY too many readings. Over 40 on D2L alone and that's not including the textbook. They are all so boring to read as well. He spends roughly 20% of class time actually talking about the readings and the other 80% going off on a tangent or spewing useless information. AVOID. His tests suck as well
Very passionate about the subject matter, course material is interesting and relevant to everyday life .
UBST was a difficult course to keep up with due to the amount of reading. He would assign a ton of readings from the City Reader, and then on top of that, you would have more readings to complete from D2L. He wouldn't go over readings properly in class, but instead told us personal stories. Study guides also didn't cover all the material needed.
Very cute!
Material is interesting, prof, not so much. Get ready to read A LOT in this class. Really hard to take many notes in class as he kind of just talks a lot, with not much of a powerpoint. Tests are based off the readings a fair bit. Grades are fair though, and if you put in some effort you'll do just fine.
Miller is alright. Contrary to what others say, you don't necessarily have to read the textbook or readings since he talks about most of them in-class, which means you have to go to the lectures. The tests and assignments were fair (the tests were 50% multiple choice, 50% written), overall an alright professor.
Dr. Miller has honestly been my favourite prof. He's incredibly knowledgeable. There was a fair bit of reading for the course, but his study guides for the midterm & final allowed you to focus on just a few readings. I did maybe half the assigned readings and got an A. The papers were long but easy, same with the tests. SUPER interesting course.
The prof I learned the most from throughout my entire degree. Hes extremely knowledgeable in the field of urban studies, and if youre interested in cities you will learn a lot from him. Lots of reading which is fair for a 500 level course. If you are serious about urban studies Id recommend taking a course with Byron.
he's obviously very knowledgeable in his field but is easily distracted. doesn't post the slideshows but it's rare he gets through more than 10 slides during a lecture anyway. material seems to be all over the place. shows up late more often than not, yet makes a big deal out of leaving early. huge emphasis on the textbook and additional readings.
the problem with him is that he doesn't have lecture slides, he just had photos and talks through the whole thing, so if you miss a class you have no way of getting that information besides the readings. There is a ton of reading, around 30 pages of a dense textbook per lecture, you have to write one essay on the midterm and 2 essays on the final.
Lots of assigned reading but if you are at all interested with cities, the classes are extremely interesting since Byron has been in the industry for while and brings very valuable insight to the discussion. Midterm was exactly like the study guide so although there are many readings I've been doing quite well without completing all of them.
Byron has been the worst prof I have had so far. He is unbelievably boring. You only have to do two assignments all semester that count for 25% each. I would never take his classes again. You need to do a few hours of boring readings every week in order to keep up. He wastes class time by going on tangents and rambling pointlessly.
Worst professor i've ever seen in my life. There are tons of readings for homework in a week, however he never go through the textbook during lecture time. He also wastes his time on helpless speech, excluding any lecture Power points or notes. I won't take his course again unless it is mandatory to take.
Horrible. Lectures were completely un-educational, no powerpoint/slides displayed during the class (unless it was photos) and mostly just on irrelevant topics. Assigned an impossible amount of readings, and wouldn't talk about them until the last 15min of class. Skip the lectures, do a few readings, and tests are 100% based off the study guide.
Absolutely terrible. He doesn't provide any sort of class notes even during lectures. Spends the whole class talking with no notes up and goes on too many tangents. Waaay too many readings for this course. All the assignments/study guides have such vague instructions you can never be sure how he's going to grade your work. If you have him, switch.
His lectures are important to attend as he doesn't post any class slides, the lectures are where all of the information in the course is talked about. The textbooks and online readings are essential to passing this class. His hour fifteen lectures do get boring at times so bring coffee!
Byron never posts class notes and his lectures are incredibly difficult to gather valuable information from. The course is designed as if its the only course students have in a semester. You are expected to spend an unreasonable amount of time reading outside of class and the midterm was graded very tough.
such a wasteful university professor, doesn't believe that using power points with words are at all helpful. Easily distracted and will spend more than half the lecture time talking about topics that will not help you succeed in the course at all. Spare yourself the misery and try to focus on readings that will benefit you more.
"for each hour of class time, a student should do 3 hours of studying on their own" - obvious from the amount of reading assigned. provides study guide which is helpful since he expects you to memorize every single author and their ideologies in detail. Misprinted all midterms, expected us to read small print off projector. nice guy, TERRIBLE PROF
Very passionate about what he was teaching and a very nice prof, but had no notes or slides which made it difficult to retain information. Very heavy on the readings, multiple choice were phrased weirdly but assignments and essays on finals were fairly created and marked. Again good guy but would not recommend.
Lectures seem to be all over the place. He has a lot of readings to do for just one class. Otherwise, easy marker.
I have enjoyed this course more than I thought I would. There is quite a bit of reading, some of it quite heavy, but Dr. Miller made sure to point it in lectures what about them was relevant. This class really made me think and extrapolate to the real world. Can honestly say this is one of the most useful courses I have taken. Very interesting.
I took UBST 253 as an elective course, and I ended up spending most of my free time on this class. Very heavy on the readings, but if you actually do them then it'll be a pretty easy class. A couple assignments have you apply knowledge from readings and class to the real world but I found Miller to be very lenient in terms of grading.
Dr. Miller presented GEOG 554 for the first time when I took this class with him and he did an exceptional job in creating and presenting the course. His classes are reading heavy but you can get away with missing some as his lectures essentially just go through the assigned readings for the given week.
If you want to learn about cities and globalization, I recommend his classes. Although you are meant to read a lot, most students only read what is applicable to assignments. If you wish the get an A+, read everything. Anything lower than that is achievable with selective reading. Perhaps one of the most knowledgeable people I have studied under.
Incredibly unprofessional. His syllabus is more of a loose guideline he consistently switches up, leaving students scrambling to stay on track. He goes off on very long tangents and then proceeds to cram 3/4 of everything else into the last 20 minutes. Takes forever to give back grades. I would highly recommend avoiding Dr. Miller.
Miller is a good and very personable prof, but he had a very tough time showing up to class on time. I think his excuses were fair, but I would have rather that the course be handed off to another prof than losing ~15 minutes at the beginning of every lecture. He rambles a lot and there are lots of readings. He is a very easy marker.
Good guy with a clear passion about the subject. Lectures were mainly him summarizing readings, of which there were 76 assigned (average 10 pages each). Tends to go off topic and cram 3 readings into 5 minutes at end of class. One week had ~140 pages assigned; you've been warned. Tests & assignments (2 each) are easy if you can read everything.
Took this class for an easy A - bad idea! Byron is an old-fashioned prof who teaches without lecture slides and expects 3 hours of homework per lecture. Textbook is bland and additional readings are so long. Met with him to discuss a grade and was told "you decided to not use your brain". Assignment/grading criteria was clear though.
Miller is a good prof. He based this class around a few small but fun papers, and one large research paper and presentation. The topics are cool, and his lectures are fun (but very rambly). However, he assigns an insane amount of readings, even for a high-level class. Miller is a great prof for upper years, but lower years might struggle with him.
Definitely don't take this class if you're not genuinely curious about the content. Miller is old-fashioned and is a little slow during the lectures. Assignments are graded fairly and he provides study guides for tests that will help you prepare, which make up for the somewhat messy lectures. DON'T do every reading. That's a waste of your time.
Miller is clearly passionate about Urban Studies which he shows in his lectures. I had ubst 253 and we had two papers, one midterms along with a final. For the exams he would provide a study guide which took time to fill out but once you do that's all you need to memorize to get a good grade.
If I was able to stay awake during class Im sure it could be interesting. A very boring and old style of lecture where it's hard to stay alert. The readings are not as important as is conveyed to start the class. Overall, I'm sure that this could've been an interesting course but it wasn't taught in any sort of interesting or intriguing way.
Professor Miller brings a clear passion for urban studies, though his teaching style can be oldschool at times. The readings are dense but manageable with focus, and Unstuck study proved a helpful study tool alongside the provided study guides.
Took his geog 452 last semester, Dr Miller is an intelligent and nice guy tbh, even though sometimes he shows up late to class and give feedbacks slow. But overall he give marks pretty nicely and demonstrated his knowledges clearly. His courses have lots of readings which I hate, but never felt struggle on tests so I would recommend take his class
So many readings that were so unnecessary. I got an A on the test with falling behind on readings and following the study guide criteria. The lectures are awful to sit through and almost made me change my major. But Mr. Miller is a really nice person, and is super sweet. The lectures were just terrible.
Miller is a good and fun prof overall and I honestly do like his teaching style. However, he takes FOREVER to grade or upload things. I'm currently enrolled in his class and waiting for the grade of a midterm I wrote over a month ago, and for a 500 level course where I need to pass everything in order to pass the class this is kind of ridiculous.
He does a good job
He's very knowledgable and resourceful and actively relates what he teaches to current events. His teaching is more conversational, but sometimes he will ask a basic fundamental question in class just to catch everyone off guard. That aside, he grades easy. but takes forever to grade. He gave back my midterm grade after my semester ended.
An old-school style of teaching, assigned readings and then discussed them in lectures with no PowerPoint. Many of the assigned readings weren't mentioned. My recommendation is not to do the readings, just go to the lectures and pay attention. Study guides were provided for the midterm and final. If you fill these out and memorize them, you're set.
