She is soo boring, and all assignments and tests are submitted online, so if you aren't on the computer a lot, don't take this class. She is BORING!

I always thought this was one of the most difficult classes I've taken because it requires lots of reading(of course) and writing on a daily basis. You can't ever say you don't do anything in this class.
Took her online class... lots of reading and writing material. Enjoyed the class, however had to work really hard to earn an A.
she is horrible! she thinks she's funny, but not. i got an A in the class, but with no help from her. stay away from her for your own sanity.

I took it over the summer, and even though it was a very hard class, I learned alot. You really have to put some effort into your studying. The only thing I hated was that all tests were taken online which was a pain in the butt.
She is very disorganized, air headed and boring. Her tests are hard and are online, she makes mistakes in her answers. You will have to read a lot in her soco 110. She talks about one thing and puts a different thing on the test.

Like most of the other reviews, I agree she is a horrible instructor and partly crazy. Often gets off subject, forgetful and NEVER responds to e-mail. Tests are online and sometimes questions make no sense. Easily passable but not enjoyable.
The movies she shows in class are antiques and belong in the Smithsonian! She IS a disorganized professor but does fixes her mistakes. If you have trouble sleeping take this class you will be in a comatose state in 5 minutes!!
I took her online course. She never got back to any of us on the discussion or emails. She was never clear. She has one sided views on everything. I love online courses, but I do not recommend her. Everyone complained to the faculty but nothing was done.

got an A in the class and barely read any of the book. Just participate and make sure she knows who u are. Two tests and theyre both open book and she tells you what to expect before the test so u already know the stuff. A lot of group work
I felt she was a terrible lecturer and did not communicate her ideas well. Online tests are timed and a pain. Very difficult to get an A. Take a different teacher if you want to keep a high G.P.A

A tad disorganized, and true the tests are a little annoying. It's an easy course though and she's a v. well meaning prof. Attempts humor and will fix her mistakes. Only real annoyance are the required field trips, don't enjoy giving up 2 Saturdays for extra class time. Still would recommend.

This class was okay. All tests were online and a few writing assignments were given, but they weren't hard at all. A lot of people in my class just scanned through the book on testing day and got a decent grade.
All test are online, a little unorganized, just make sure you have powerpoint on your computer as well as the book next to you when you take the test and you can get an easy A.
All tests were online and yes, they were a pain. However, its nice to have your notes there. She really put a lot of effort in her notes. But she the lecture was not useful. Just print the notes off the Internet and read the mistrial and know the terms and important people and you well do fine!
she is a really sweet person. yes the online test are a pain, esp. if you dont have computer at home. field trips aren't so bad. it isn't an easy easy A but definitely a manageable B. If you are persistent with her and let her know you want to better your grade she is always willing to help.
I have never taken a teacher that was so tuned out to different learning styles! Ort is horrible at lectures and dances around questions that are asked. She only uses powerpoint and is very unorganized with the course structure. A very impersonable teacher and close-minded to the classes opinions.
Great teacher! Very knowledgable! The lectures are interesting. They are maybe boring for those who take the class for a grade, not for learning. I enjoy the class a lot!
Disorganized! On online tests are a pain, no feed back or going over material. Decidedly opinionated and not interested in anything that differs with her obvious political agenda. Very difficult to swallow the propaganda and be forced to regurgitate it for a grade
Please you guys! Give teachers like her good ratings! She isn't mean, and if you want an A bad enough she'll find a way to give it to you. I love anthro, for those who dont , of course it can be boring. But it shouldn't ever be hard! Tip: You can do online tests with friends! That can help. cut&past
Dr Ort is one of the best professors I have ever had. Those who say she is pushing political agenda are wrong; she only gives facts! She is always helpful and willing to work with students.Her lectures are quite interesting. Highly reccomend!
The lectures are somewhat boring, but she's the nicest lady. Tests AND all class notes are online, and most material comes out of the book anyway. Can't beat that.
i thought she was one of the most scatterbrained person i have met in a LONG time. she would be in the middle of the lecture and if she were to get interuppted, she wouldnt be able to continue. fairly easy class, not too much work. online tests are hard unless you really study.
i didn`t like the class. she tends to forget what she taught the day before and she doesn`t seem to understand anything she teaches. all the lecture notes, assignments and tests are online so there isnt any reason to show up. not a very instructor in my opinion!
Very nice teacher. Wasn't intrested in the class at the beginning but became interested in the class. Teacher tries to make you involved in the class and help you understand in various ways. She shows passion for the class.
I cannot believe anyone can complain about this teacher... All i have to say is take her. She is nice and really wants you to learn. She doesn't like to give bad grades either and gives many chances.
I really didn't know much about sociology before I took this class but boy did I learn a few things! Dr. Ort is incredibly nice and very educated. If you ask good questions she'll answer them, if you ask dumb questions or just want to tell the class your own opinion she'll acknowledge it and move on. The videos she shows are just mind-blowing!
WARNING! DO NOT TAKE THIS CLASS FROM HER! She is crazy! She is totally scatterbrained, thinks shes funny when shes not, and she just reads long notes from her powerpoint slides. the online tests are really hard too!
gosh, who is this? you make her sound like the devil. she is a sweet goofy lady, about 50. very passionate about her subject and smart. easy class. my lazy butt passed with an A. sort of suprised to see that rating. esp since she is soo nice and flexible. dunno about some people. but i would take her again. she always ups your grade
Nice lady, but never undestood the material. What was discussed in class had little relation to her tests, making her tests hard to get decent grades in. You don't know whats on there so you need to study EVERYTHING. Fieldtrips are fun, tests are hard, HW is easy, and lectures are boring...that pretty much sums it up =)
Dr. Ort is REALLY nice but she is SOOOO BORRRING. She personally understands all her lectures but doesn't know how to repeat it to her classes. Its REALLY frusturating. She goes off on random tangents and shows ancient movies which causes more than half the class to fall asleep. I seriously don't recommend taking her.
she's great! Do all assign. you'll do good. Test are hard, but the materials give you lot's of chances and some of the test were design to give you a chance to improve your grade as it goes. taking this class was like a rollercoaster to me, my grades were up's than way down's than at the end, it's way up again. whew! she make my heart tremble!
Her class was very interesting, just a little hard to keep up with sometimes.
she is very nice but the test can be hard. If you show up to class everyday and do all the extra credit you can get an easy C with doing poorly on the tests. so shes not that bad
Dr Ort is is a very nice person and professor. She is flexable and helpful. Her lectures are interesting most of the time. I agree that her tests are difficult, but you can ask her to retake some of them. If you put a little effort, it's not hard to get an A.

Easy class, only because most of the time is spent with Mrs. Ort lecturing using power point. There is hardly any class participation and only 4 assignments for the semester. But I must warn you, the tests may be online, but they are much more difficult than you'd expect.
It's the middle of the semester and I recommend that you NOT take her class. She is so disorganized, and she never knows what she is going to say during class. She says 'um' every other word when she talks...sooo boring. I actually fell asleep in class today..sheesh..

Disorganized! The online tests are hard, mostly because she asks stuff that she never went over in class. Made us take 2 Saturdays out of our semester to do field trips. The class is super boring because all she does are the power point lectures-bring homework from other classes! Her heart is in the right place and she's very sweet, frustrating.
took anthro102 & soc101.very easy class,didnt buy books for any of them.all class notes are available online,just study those & you'll pass. tests are online,not as hard as people are reporting as long as you pay attention in class. field trips are a breeze. Got a B in both classes w/o studying the whole semester. recommended if u dont have A.D.D.

I learned some interesting concepts in this class, but I felt the professor was quite biased at times. Regardless, there was some interesting conversation and argument exchanged between students. All of her assignments are WebCT based and procrastinators will get owned by the midnight workload. I speak from experience.

The tests are hard. Make sure you read but even then they are hard. You get to see the scores you got but never the answers. Tests are online. Gives a lot of extra credit. I got a B in the class but she bumped it to an A for some reason. I did not deserve the A. Nice lady, easy going, forgets to do things but does not take it out on the students.
The way WebCT was set up was poor. Information from .ppt slides were there but the tests just sucked. You cant skip the questions and come back which hurt the grades. Take the test with a friend from class!! Tag team it, it helps. Dr. Ort is very passionate about teaching and AI and willing to help. Make the time to talk.
Nice person, great class, but HATED the online tests! Any test where you can't skip questions or change answers is just plain STUPID. However, the outside assignments were interesting and fun. But they were usually on Fridays, so if you work or go out on the weekends, it can be an inconvenience. Overall good experience, take her if you have to.
This professor was very boring. She does all her testing online which is completely ridiculous. The tests are super hard and even if u read the chapter u can still easily fail her tests. I shouldve dropped this class. I suggest you do the same.
Professor Ort's tests are online, and they can be very unclear and difficult. I feel like my grade did not reflect my work (probably because of the online tests). She is very knowledgeable with cultural anthropology. I do not recommend her unless you have to take her. She does give good assignments and shows interesting videos though.

Doctor Ort was a very interesting teacher. She showed a lot of good videos and she told some good stories that related to the subject matter. The tests are VERY difficult, but they are online (which means you can use your book and a friend!). Several classmates believed her to be too opinionated, but I disagree. I liked the class in general.
she is lazy when it comes to grading, and shes a hypocrite.
DO NOT TAKE THIS CLASS!! she is very liberal and will force you to read rediculous books. the S text we read angered me beyond all hell. No respect for the military or the government. I HATED this class
Her online test were extremely impossibly hard!! I usually took the open book test with 2 other classmates, but still the highest grade we got was a B on the possitive note she is a nice old lady!!! doesn't give any homework!
She likes to start at point A and then ramble on and on until you have no idea what she's talking about or to the point where everything she said contradicts point A. Her online test have misspellings and are confusing. You can't go back and correct any answers and WebCT is down half the time! Has a lot of reading outside of textbook also.
Her class is not interesting what-so-ever! She will start off teaching a lesson, and by the time she's done babbling, you don't even know what she's saying anymore! She'll pause a lot mid-sentence and then start saying something completely different! No homework. All tests are online and are DIFFICULT! Biggest waste of time taking that class!
Good teacher and her tests are not impossible. An overwhelming majority of them are from the textbook and like 5-7 questions are from the lectures or the movies you watch. Some writing assignments here and there. Offers a lot of extra credit and you are allowed to make-up/retake two tests which I think is fair to those who did poorly initially.

Tests are from the book, word for word. Handfull of questions from lecture/movies also. You'll need to read a book on your own, answer about 6-7 pages worth of questions and then take a test. None of which is discussed in class. Classtime is listening to her talk about subjects that aren't in the book or on the test. Half+ dropped the class.

I did not learn a thing from this teacher. her lectures were basically straight from the book. and she says that her tests are taken from the book and lectures, but then there are questions at the end worth the most points that have absolutely nothing to do with anything from her lectures of the book. DO NOT TAKE THIS TEACHER. worst professor ever.
very sweet but it was sad to watch the class walk all over her. there are some people who repeatedly take advantage of the way she'll reset a test for you if you forget to take it or if "something comes up". she talks the whole time. the WHOLE time.
This is a very hard class if you don't use the textbook. Tests are taken online, and even with friends and the book, I had a hard time. She was very understanding and gave you two retakes. I missed a big assignment and she let me turn it in late for full credit. No real need to go to class, but worth taking.
I don't think the lectures are as boring as most people have said but they're not the most exciting. tests are all online so you can use your book. the tests are very specific though, asks a lot of question about statistics straight out of the chapter. She's really nice. The Midterm's hard, 15 essay questions but you get to do it at home.

she is easy but absolutely useless as a teacher. tries pushing an amazing liberal agenda to the point of flat out lying to students. over 50 percent of tests consists of looking up stats from the book. completely useless. my brainpower has diminished from listening to her speak

Her tests are easy if you just skim the chapter and highlight here and there before you take the test. I took her for 101 and 110 and got all A's on my tests. Read the book and you will do good. an hour or two out of the week and i got straight A's on all her tests. Shes very nice and is very willing to help you if yournice to her. Lots of extra credit that no one showed up to even though they were always something easy such as watching a movie that was actually pretty interesting

if you want interesting and lively teacher, dont take her. but if you want a challenge, then take her. I don't recommend her though, take another teacher.
She is a very easy teacher, I didn't even read the book, Get the ebook if your going to take the class, makes your life a whole lot easier.
She was very opinionated and hypocritical. Used an extremely-liberal textbook full of false stats to push her own agenda. Tests were easy and online. Over half the class had dropped by the third week. I would not recommend her. Avoid at all costs.
one of the worst teachers ive ever had. she is the most boring teacher i have ever had and second guesses her thoughts after everything she says, dont take her class if you have a hard time paying attention, because all she does is leture about things that are not even on the test. DO NOT TAKE HER
Absolutely horrible. The most boring teacher ever. I waste 3 hours a week sitting in lecture when all her quizzes and discussion boards are online and open book. Very liberal and always second guesses herself. She is kind of crazy too. Told us a story how she almost got arrested for camping out in front of the mayors house. I wouldnt take her
one of the most boring classes ive ever taken. im taking her fro 110 and 101 back to back, worst decision in my college experience. so boring more then half of th class leaves within the first 20 mins of her lecture. everything is online even though u have to attend class. word of advice. if you are interested in this topic, dont take her

WORSE PROFESSOR EVER! I was so excited to have a doctoral professor for Sociology, but she is incompetent. If you just sit in the back and put headphones on, then do her terribly constructed tests, easy A. If you want to learn anything, or god forbid, have constructive class discussions, go with someone else...
I wonder if she realizes this is a sociology class and not a history class? Lectures are very slow and I feel I'm not learning anything. Very disappointing because I was really looking forward to getting a lot out of this class to apply to my major.
I was surprised that many people gave her a horrible rating because she makes it IMPOSSIBLE for her students to fail. She is always there to answer phone calls or emails if you have any questions. She's a wonderful professor. Highly recommend taking her class! Even if you don't show up, just read the textbook, you can get a B/A / still.
