Professor Smith was an okay professor, but her mouth sounds in all of her videos made the weekly videos unbearable to watch.
Though the voice sounds of her videos are a bit annoying, she's very nice in person. I highly recommend making a spot in your schedule and going to office hours to ask her anything you want about the course, or even completely unrelated, such as linguistics. However, the course was not very difficult nor fast, so you are probably not gonna need it.
This is the worst class I've ever taken at UNC. I know you have no other option but try to find someone who knows what they're doing and can help you through it. The group project at the end is really important so make sure you don't get a bad group.
This professor is not helpful and seems to show no respect for any of her students. I tried to get her help several times with a serious issue (and I know other students did too) and she did not care and did not help at all. She is rude and treated me with disrespect. The class material was fine but she alone made me hate the course.
This professor is not very nice or helpful. Every time I would attend office hours or ask a question she would act like it was a burden for me to be there. Overall she is just slightly rude.
Professor Smith's instructional videos were understandable, but her voice/mouth sounds make the videos horrible to listen to. She was rude when I went to office hours and just kind of expects you to fully understand everything after watching 6 videos a week.
Caitlin Smith was fine I guess. If you watch the one or two videos you actually need for that week you'll be fine. It's not really hard and you can always just share screenshots with other people. She's not great with communication though. And her voice is mad annoying
I don't understand how she wore the same fit for 15 straight weeks
The exercises felt like busy work most of the time, especially piled with all the other work that was there, and the videos took forever to finish watching.
Literally the most useless class I have ever taken. Not only that, but was very annoying rather than hard. She talks so slow in her videos and just yaps forever. I just let the video run on mute in the background while i do something else. Unfortunately you cannot avoid her.
I honestly thought that the videos were way longer than they needed to be most of the time. The exercises weren't bad, but the final group project felt unnecessary. Her voice did become annoying over time.
I spent most of this class with her lectures on mute. Usually, only one or two videos a week were important, so everything else felt like a waste of time.
Caitlin Smith is the instructor for the data literacy lab at UNC. The pre-recorded lectures are often boring, and I often watched all 4-6 videos on mute simultaneously to get participation credit. The work was easy and I'm sure she's a nice person, but those lectures could put anyone to sleep. Monotone and generally uninformative.
This class was quite pointless, you just watched (usually too long) videos every week and did an excerize, and the group project was felt a bit unrelated to what we did the whole semester. It was easy but just felt pointless - the videos were really unengaging, she wore the same outfit every video.
This class was of almost no help to me (save the couple of minor Excel tricks and Tableau functions that we learned). The videos were often incredibly long (unnecessarily so), and the activities didn't match up with the length of the videos. The final project was easy. Somehow she wore the same outfit every video. Very responsive to email.
Aside from some neat Excel tips, this course was pretty much useless. So boring that I ended up skipping the last three assignments and got a B- instead of an A. Just play all the videos in the background to get credit, and only watch the one or two videos that correspond to the exercise. Not sure why people are hating her looks/voice though.
Not accommodating at all. Communication with her is impossible and the course is impossibly boring. She talks way too much, there's so many unnecessary details in her lecture.
Her videos did not help you with anything other than wasting your time. The assignments made no sense and she never answered emails.
genuinely the most pointless class I have ever taken. The videos did not help much and the class was based on work that was tedious and pointless. I cannot say anything of value was taken from this class besides a couple of excel tips. The grading is pretty strict. I am sure she is super nice but I would never recommend this class.
If UNC admin is reading this, PLEASE PLEASE PLEASE for the love of God, find someone better to teach data literacy to first-years or get rid of this program. She never answers her emails, her videos make no sense, she has no emotions in her videos, and her videos are unnecessarily long, her version of software is different from the one downloaded.
the final project is gonna drive me insane... i reached out to my group members and no one responded. i also learned nothing about data science from this woman.
For me along with so many other people, this is the worst class you will take at UNC. The videos are longer than needed and she talks about things that are not necessary. Assignments are also sometimes unrelated to the videos we have to watch. Additionally, she does not have office hours and it is impossible to seek assistance if you are stuck.
The most pointless class you will ever take. About 45 minutes of videos per week and then an exercise that takes 15-30 minutes. Most people will never use this information so good luck.
The data literacy lab is by far the worst freshman requirement. The video lectures are far too long. The content is easy and some of the skills are valuable, but it is not worth the time you have to put into doing the activities. If you don't screenshot your entire browser (instead of just the activity), be prepared to get a 0 for the assignment.
he videos are long for sure, but if you just do the assignment for the week while you watch the video THAT SHE TELLS YOU HAS THE CONTENT you're good. Yes, it was a silly class, but it's just not a big deal. I thought the content was somewhat useful and the school needs it so we can claim everyone has literacy. it's like an hour of work a week max!
This class was boring. I did not learn much and the videos were not helpful on some assignments.
mouth sounds were so bad help she would breathe into the mic so loud and it was so dull
the mouth sounds in the mic were bad. and by far the worst and most pointless class i have ever taken.
I made a post earlier in the semester talking about how rude she is and it looks like it got taken down. So I am back. Not only are her videos atrocious, but she is also an awful person to deal with and gives you a headache.
The videos are so long and monotone, and everything feels like busywork. It would be better if the videos were shorter and there were fewer of them. Maybe then I could actually pay attention and learn the material. Instead, I suffered every Tuesday night trying to make sense of things that probably could have been explained in a couple of minutes
i got an f because i took a screenshot of my assignment and not the entire screen
The professor is an extremely tough grader and difficult to work with. If you get one thing wrong you may get an F.
I wish I could rate her a 0. Why in the world choose to be a professor if you have an inability to empathize with your students (or even show any care for them at all)? She simply does not care about her students and thinks she is superior to all. She made me and so many classmates feel so belittled and disrespected. It is a real shame.
No one is particularly interested in the content, but the assignments are very clear and you can follow the video step by step. The worst part is listening to the parts of her lectures that don't matter because the videos aren't able to be skipped thru. Screenshots of anything but your FULL screen are automatically an F and office hours are rare.
most boring class ever. there are like five 10-minute long lecture videos for one small 10 minute assignment and you can't skip any of them. I would pay good money to get out of this class.
the team that answering questions and grading concerns is the worst. they don't respond in time for you to resubmit the assignment for full credit and then blame it on you. they also won't answer your question unless you come to office hours even after multiple people have submitted the same concern.
This class is honestly the worst. Make sure you don't mess up on any assignments cuz if you do you most likely won't get an A
Honestly I reached out to her asking for help when I was really struggling with my depression and she did not care at all. Made me feel horrible and worsened the situation. She really made a hard time for me even worse by treating me like I was an annoyance. I hope she finds a way to treat others better in the future.
Actually the worst class ever. Don't go to office hours if you need help, the team will be rude to you. Honestly is just better to get help from classmates.
This course was degrading. I often had questions or tech problems and would go to office hours only to be ignored for hours on end, or spoken down to for being confused. There are specifications that emerged at one point in the middle of the semester saying that screenshots could not be cropped and after making this mistake just once, I got a B.
You can follow all of the assignments step by step not hard at all. All of the websites and apps are clearly accessible. Never had to go to office hours and when I did submit a request to the teaching staff I heard back within a few hours. The videos are hard to watch but you only need to pay attention to the ones you need for the assignment.
Honestly Dr. Smith isn't a bad professor and she speaks clearly but I just really don't like the class. It's difficult, annoying, and sometimes made me want to rip my hair out. One thing I didn't appreciate from this course however, is a group final project for an online class where I didn't know anyone or could communicate with them.
For this class being a 'lab', the amount of work was sometimes wild. If you are a tech person or into coding it'll be easy, but if not it's really really difficult to understand. They are also very particular about screenshots being of the ENTIRE screen (you will get an F if its like one pixel too small) which was odd. There's also a group final.
The data literacy lab is a waste of time. It's super easy, but so boring. I think introducing students to R/Rstudio (coding language) was a weird choice. I like compsci, so I didn't have any trouble with it. I imagine if you had never programmed before it would be a huge chore.
Videos are terribly boring and slightly useless. She gives you an F if you don't include your laptop's bookmark bar in the Excel screenshot. Pretty rude when you go to office hours to ask for help, and she ended up making my grade worse instead of trying to help me.
You are forced to take this online course, and unless you are insanely interested in the topic it is actually mind numbing. Never met Smith in person so can't judge too hard but listening to her monotonous voice while playing IT problem simulator every week was not fun or useful. If any UNC admin is reading this, online classes are a terrible idea
Probably the worst class UNC could ever make students take. Very time consuming, very boring and monotone voice. Just play the videos on mute in the background at the same time (you have to have watched all the videos- they track it) and only watch the required videos for the assignments. So freaking boring. A waste of time and computer space.
No idea why this course was mandatory and paired with a Triple-I. I understand the importance of data science, but it shouldn't be required for everyone. The videos she made were extremely long and boring, and they didn't help. I just wish she had gotten to the point quicker. Many assignments were overly tedious too.
The data lab had a lot of work that I didn't find useful. I kept my interactions with her to a minimum but did get what I needed when I emailed her. I agree that you either get an A or an F on assignments, no in-between, and I'm speaking from experience. If you know how to use excel and can write super easy code, this class should be easy.
terrible. that is all i have to say. terrible is all aspects. awful, rude, boring, harsh, selfish, should I even continue
Group project as final. It really was not too bad, class was easy. There are lots of videos you only need to watch 1 or 2 to complete the weeks assignments. Only messaged teaching team once and heard back in a few hours. Never interacted with her in person.
This class wasn't even that hard, it was just primarily busywork in a format that clearly doesn't work for students. The final project also does not have clear criteria and will be graded harshly; going to office hours to get it reviewed is recommended.
The data literacy lab just sucks and making time to watch her stupid videos and do the assignments amidst all my other classes was annoying.
Even though this course was easy, I've never had a more rude or not caring teacher. I genuinely don't know why she decided to teach because she's extremely accusatory and honestly mean.
I just don't see the use of this class. It did not help me become "data literate" in any meaningful way.
this class made me sad inside
one of the worst classes you will take as a freshman. trust me, it gets better after you experience caitlin.
I don't know why the university does not cancel the course
Should have been a 0.6 on avg. honestly
So this is like a Guinness World Records course. The 1.6 says it all. TA is just as bad as the instructor. one single drop in session of 3 hours weekly to get all your concerned denied. Through the comments this is a class that bothered almost all students. But maybe they just don't care.
I have never hated someone more in my life
The class is mandatory for first year students yet is not applicable to most of the courses of study. This class feels like a large waste of time. Videos are due weekly and don't get to the point. This class is excessive for 1 credit hour.
This class was a complete and utter waste of time—an insult to anyone with even a shred of logical reasoning. The material was so painfully basic that I felt my brain actively deteriorating with each video. If you have any background in STEM, taking this class will make you question your life choices and lose faith in the education system.
I really don't f with her
this class was brainrot,
She does not care about her students at all. I don't know how she hasn't been fired yet. I wish she cared about her students and her students' wellbeing. I don't know why she would have EVER chosen the teaching profession because she is apathetic to students and does not care about their success.
TERRIBLE at explaining things, does not respond to emails quickly at all. UNC needs to get someone new to teach this class.
I did not enjoy this course.
Questions are answered with, "follow the instructions online", if answered at all. The class is already a subject most are not familiar with or care about, so not helpful or kind to those who are trying. Also, a lot of work for a 1 credit hour, and if they care about teaching data, find a better more caring instructor. This class was painful.
basically a busy work class, either insanely easy and a waste of your time or a completely frustrating time drain (depending on how well you can work with different softwares), although learning to use some of the programs is helpful, the class doesn't set you up to do well
Possibly one of the most useless classes and experiences I have ever had in my education. Not too bad, just extremely useless.
Incredibly boring class with terrible lectures and busywork assignments. It's mandatory to graduate, but it's a total waste of time. In theory, the skills the class teaches are useful, but the course isn't set up in a way where you actually learn anything meaningful. Avoid if possible.
Waste of time
Caitlin Smith wasn't very involved with students. I felt that most of the work assigned was wasting my time as it was just busy work. That being said, I expected grades to get back a lot quicker each time but it would always take forever to get the grade back.
This class explains why UNC is falling in rankings. It's just a waste of time, not sure what the University is thinking.
For context, every triple I has a lab with her. its just unc pushing an academic department on students. this class is, seriously, useless. you don't gain anything, it's tedious, and grading is too tough for the work expected. this class screwed up my sleep schedule. its a canon event. BOOOOO TOMATO TOMATO
Awfulll asff istg
dont know how she wore the same clothes for 15 weeks. this class was also really useless i didnt learn anything and she was rude in office hours. she hates students.
not a knock on her but the class pushed by UNC is pure BS. A terrible attempt at trying ti get people to learn excel.
i hate the data lit lab with a fiery passion. did not help in any way shape or form.
This is required. I'm so sorry you have to take this TERRIBLE, WASTEFUL, ANNOYING, LAME course.
Just no. Avoid at ALL costs.
grrrrrrrrrr
Boring and useless class.
