Prochnow knows what he's talking about. He uses positive reinforcement, but critiques honestly. He's friendly and often breaks up long critiques with humor. Easy to approach. He definitely wants his students to do well. Great professor.
He is a great teacher. He is very hard but pushes not just one person but the entire class. He is very helpful and lets you know what you need to do for the real world. He is the best teacher I had. I learned so much. HE also knows his stuff.
Mr. Prochnow is an awesome teacher! he definitely knows his stuff and knows what makes it or breaks it in the real world. Will help any student that is willing and motivated. Bring your A-game to his class because he will call you out for turning in subpar work-he's not a pushover! One of the best teachers I've had at Ringling
Prochnow is awesome. Super helpful and pushes his students to be the best they can be. He cares about his students and gets to know them as people, not just another kid coming through his class. He is so intelligent and has so much talent.
He is one of the meanest teachers, pins students against one another. He is so full of himself. he believe people should be one another not be the best you can
Very focused on making his students industry ready and marketable (which is awesome!). Critiques are clear & useful (but he does not sugar coat, if you're anxious or easy to freak out choose another teacher). Everyone in our class has improved greatly (not just the best kids, or worst, or one style of artist). Great choice for upperclassmen.
He is awesome teacher.
This guy was such a rude person. He likes to pretend he does it to show you what it's like to work for someone. If that someone is like him i'd look else where. This guy is not very good with people and although he knows his stuff, he lacks prospective when it comes to being good with people. I wish I had picked someone else for my final year.
Prochnow is one of my favorite teachers at this school. I took this class to be whipped into shape, and he did just that. Sometimes he really pushes you but it's all worth it. He is an awesome teacher and just wants you to succeed and will help you in any way possible.
Very helpful, enjoyed the class. Had to do a lot of work, not as laid back as other teachers but thats what I wanted.
Lots of deadlines but he makes sure you get your process work done.
Has a specific idea of what he wants your work to look like. Could help to look at student's work prior to having make pieces a certain way. Aside from that, he's very helpful. Beware of many deadlines
Great teacher! Expects work every class which helps a lot with not having a ton of work pile up in the end near a deadline. You have to work hard in this class but it's pretty worth it. He's friendly and a nice guy!
Bet professor I've had.
One of the best teachers here. I wish he would teach the Illustration class for seniors.
High expectations, but helps you progress a lot.
I really enjoyed having Prochnow as a teacher
10/10 would take again.
best vis dev professor
He's tough and moves faster than the other teacher for the same class. Not necessarily a bad thing but be ready to sweat for it.
He's difficult, but great.
a great teacher. a tough grader, but I've learned a lot in his class.
Dude, Prochnow rocks. He wants you to succeed and do your best, and even though he assigns a lot of homework he does it for your benefit.
Gives out extremely helpful feedbacks/critiques. Although he gives out a lot of works, he helps you speed up with your working progress. His classes are very entertaining as well as helpful.
He's okay....
Simply amazing visual development professor
Tells very interesting/funny stories. Class time used wisely for projects
If you are looking for someone to hold your hand and tell you what you want to hear - don't take Prochnow. Be prepared to be held to professional standards.
Wickety whack this class was a fun fact.
I really enjoyed having Prochnow as a teacher. I always know where I stand in his class and he's a cool person.
Not gonna lie, favorite teacher.
Very straight to the point kind of teacher who will help you if you help yourself as a student and artist.
Take him at least once. It's worth it. He helps you prepare for the real world. Doesn't sugar coat critiques. Don't be afraid of feedback, it's what makes you better.
Prochnow's tough but effective. He specializes in vis dev, so if you're interested in that field and want to build your portfolio, this is a great professor to take. He will allow you to work in whatever direction you're predominantly interested in, but you have to prove it's marketable to him. Stand your ground, be informed & he will respect you.
Definitely take him once... he does a group project though. I had him for ill.. not vis dev and it was real nice getting a vis dev perspective on my stuff... since i'm not focusing on it for my portfolio... anyways.... not a chili pepper
As a professor, he is a very blunt critic. He tells you exactly what he thinks, and what he thinks about your piece is usually based on expertise or his personal experiences. Overall, a great teach who gives good feedback, serves you your ass on a silver platter, makes you work for your grades, and will ultimately guide you towards improvement.
Aside from always showing up to class late, he's a good teacher.
Good critique, great work experience stories, overall a fulfilling teacher.
I really enjoyed his method of critique and he gave good feedback
Very honest and blunt critique but his input is very valuable and usually correct. Will listen to other opinions. Fair grader.
The teacher can be picky because he knows what he likes. But, his feedback is always inspirational and gives little "lectures" after critiques about life as an artist; it's uplifting to hear his experiences that he went through after college. Being able to know what to expect what our life is gonna be like after we graduate is very insightful.
A swell guy
Great instructor, would recommend. Gives great critiques, but a student has to be able to take the constructive criticism.
Stern but can be funny too.
He does a good job in critiquing in Media Class. Doesn't show a lot of tips and tricks of how to use the media, therefore more of just go and do it. He does focus more on critiquing the concept of the work and how the work is presented.
If you are looking for someone who is going to nurture you on your educative journey, this professor isn't for you. He is very honest and frank. In this aspect, his critiques are useful since he isn't going to waste time sugar coating. However, he is not an instructor that you can easily approach or form a relationship with.
I feel that Prochnow is a fair teacher. But, students shouldn't take that as doing whatever you want. Prochnow is also stern and will make sure that you present your work properly.
He is a tough teacher. He will tell you if he hates your project or love it. However, he also explains why and gives solid feedback on how you should improve such as tips, techniques, examples etc. The class was fun and I looked forward to going to class all the time!
Good class! Gives a lot of good feedback during critiques. If you take his class make sure you present your work nicely.
Overall has good advice, would take again.
Prochnow means business.
Fun class, I learned a lot
He's easily one of my favorite instructors here.
May think tough in the beginning, but once you get a grip of yourself and pace, you're set. Entertaining and he means business. Helpful advice.
Expects a lot of you as a student, but is open and willing to let you experiment.
Prochnow genuinely, sincerely cares about the success of his students. That being said, he will also give you enough rope to hang yourself with and will give back just as much as you put in. If you are self-directed, motivated, and driven, he is the best teacher you could ask for, especially for thesis.
Awesome and tough professor with lots of great stories to tell.
You have to work hard and show up. If you do both these things, you'll gain a wealth of knowledge that goes beyond the scope of the class.
Bold and genuine, as long as you progress and create great work you will do fine.
One of the best teachers I've ever had. He gives constructive feedback on student's work and has a great teaching method.
Awesome guy, tough grader who makes you work for what you earn. Fair grader. Really takes time to make sure his students are understanding the material and growing from it.
Great professor with a lot of experience, works with you to develop your own style. Critiques are always fun and he has a lot of good funny stories about past experiences in the field.
Honestly the best professor I've had so far. (Freshman here!) While he was a tough critic to please he would always tell us what we need to work on and if that critique is well execute we can find ourselves improving immensely. 10/10 teacher and can't wait to have him again junior year. (Visual development)
Caleb is a great professor. He is tough on you and you always have to push yourself in his class. I learned a lot from him because he makes you want to do well.
An outstanding professor! Quirky and resourceful.
Great Guy, hard to reach by email sometimes but has a lot of stories from the industry and is very passionate!
Great teacher, very engaging and energetic towards students. Shows his own work and progress throughout the year, to keep you in his circle. Prepares you for the future. Not entirely tough grader, but pushes you to be the ultimate best.
Good person, tough grader, but not a sensitive person. Many lectures about the real world.
Caleb Prochnow is somewhat of a tough professor. He can give brutal critiques and be a tough grader. Both, however, are helpful in improving and challenging yourself. Expect to work hard and participate, and you'll do fine.
Prochnow genuinely cares about his students and tries his best to make them succeed. He pushes professionalism really hard to help prepare us for the workforce, but at the same time he can be kind of hilarious. Prochnow is one of those professors that you want to be proud of you and your work. He honestly has become one of my favorite teachers!
Prochnow is one of my favorite professors. He is always enthusiastic and although I'm very shy, it's easy to go talk to him when I need to. He can be tough sometimes, but I definitely achieved alot in his 3D class.
Mr. Prochnow is a teacher you will grow to both love and fear. He won't baby you, but will lend a guiding hand which is exactly what you need in a school like Ringling. I would recommend taking him at least once during your school time, it's worth it.
Prochnow is great !! He's very helpful in his critiques and gives great suggestions to help improve your skills. I've come to respect him as a wonderful professor and artist. Would definitely take again.
He will not hold your hand when it comes to learning figure, so dont expect too many demos. I really loved the class and he inspired me to look up more notable artists.
He is the best professor I learned a lot really !!! He took care of his students a lot if u have his class, you will more improve than other class students!
I've had Mr. P now twice for Precollege and now my freshman year at Ringling. I love listening to his lectures about the real world and how it actually is in the industry. He's very real in telling us what we need to improve on and how to go about fixing it. He's tough for a reason he wants us to succeed.
Although he gives a lot of homework and is demanding in your art, you will see improvement in it. He gives out good advice in the work field and a story along with it.
A resource in campus you want to take advantage of. He is very knowledgable, helpful, and (sometimes brutally) honest. But i think he cares becuase he goes beyond to make sure students are learning and having fun.
The class was fun! Professor Prochnow gives a lot of good, constructive feedback and really helps you to get better. 10/10
Great teacher. Gives a lot of helpful feedback. If you want a good grade you really need to push yourself but you'll find yourself improving immensely.
11/10 best professor I've ever had. He has real world experience that he shares in hopes of making our transition from students to professionals much easier. He's also an incredible artist, and he makes you want to work hard and go above and beyond in order to impress him.
He cares, and I'll give him that, as well as he knows what he's doing. However, when it comes down to grading, I don't feel I was treated right. If you're bad at straight lines, this guy is not for you. He told me more than half of the semester in I didn't have a chance in Hell in my major. I was academically dismissed due to his F.
Prochnow's a great dude who tries to give you a more grounded view of what it's like out there. He tells people to pursue their strengths and shows you a million different ways you can make it in illustration without conforming to a style that you think you "should" have. However, he WILL give up on you if he thinks you dont care or want to learn.
Caleb is an artist with a lot of potential, but the fact that he doesn't seem to take the career seriously concerns me, his art is a sham, and his critiques are honestly just useless insults. To top all of that off he is near IMPOSSIBLE to reach outside of class, he rarely responds to emails. If you want a hard teach take Thiel Prochnow is no Good.
great teacher, difficult class, Not impossible. Prochnow will help if you ask for it, don't be afraid to ask. Overall good time
I took 3D, His class was DIFFICULT but REWARDING. If you plan on taking his critiques personally then don't take this course. You need to be realistic, he is coming from the professional world itshows he has more knowledge than any of his students. Take a deep breath before critique and tell yourself "I can take it" then listen and try to art good,
This teacher really pushes you in the right direction when it comes to projects. He knows whats best for your assignment without requiring you to use his advice. He allows you to work at your own pace.
His kind of teaching is the reason why I came here. He encourages his students to give strong critiques, but it is always in a constructive light. He appreciates hard work, ingenuity, and professionalism. Anyone who doesn't take his class because they think he's "harsh" is missing out on learning what it's like to be a professional and have fun!
He does have a reputation for being honest and a little harsh, but its very useful. If you really try, he can see it and will try to push you in the right direction. Be prepared to work. If you're passionate about the class it's definitely a plus. He can be a bit hardcore, but far from a bad teacher or a bad guy.
helped me really find myself in terms of my artwork. Gives out lots of good nuggets of wisdom, and he's really easy to reach outside of class. definitely recommend him if you're willing to work and improve yourself
He is brutally honest during critiques, but his comments are fair and constructive. When he does give out praise it feels earned and very encouraging. He'll gladly help anyone who asks for it. Theres always a fun and somewhat competitive aura in his classroom, it definitely made things more exciting then they might have been otherwise.
I've had Prochnow for 3 semesters now, and I've enjoyed everyone of them. His way of destributing assignments, homework, etc. is usually the same; so you're not hit from left field. His crits are honest and he tries to prepare his students for the real world in a very unbias, realistic way. His classroom environments are friendly and constructive
A great teacher who will definitely grill you as if you're already in the industry. Do your work and don't skip class because he gives lots of valuable information in his lectures.
He is someone who really makes you want to do well. Having him like your piece is the most rewarding thing you can imagine. He's really experienced and open. He's really tough, but you learn a lot. I've grown more than I ever expected to. Work hard and this'll be the best class you'll ever have
The worst professor I've ever had. From day one he promoted a competitive classroom environment by comparing students' work against each other. His critiques and demos are confusing and most of the time he uses other teachers' demo videos instead of his own. He is extremely inaccessible and has not once answered an email from me. Avoid his classes.
Mr. Prochnow was one of my favorite teachers last semester (fall '22)! I looked forward to any feedback he had for me and asked for crit for other classes, which was probably the most helpful critique I have ever received! He isn't the best at responding to emails-- however just go to him before, during, or after class! He's tough but reasonable!
Prochnow gives good feedback, but it helps if the class if friendly as well. A good classroom setting often lends to better critic and classroom discussion.
Very good critiques, but asks for specific things each project.
Good critiques and a lot of flexibility when it comes to the work itself.
Prochnow may seem terrifying but he is very cool and one of my favorite teachers to joke with
Taking this Professor you are guaranteed to grow and improve even when you doubt your self he will make you shine
Prochnow always has great insight, and helpful critique. I enjoy listening to his stories in class! 100% recommend.
Gives really good critique and takes the time to make sure that everyone understands the programs that we're learning and using for the class, but he doesn't answer emails which makes communication outside of class not possible.
Tough grader, but if you show that your trying and you care he will help you out.
Prochnow gives amazing feedback and always has great suggestions for my pieces. He is professional and respectful, while also being hilarious. I really enjoy the structure of this upper level illustration course and feel as if it has really benefited the quality of my work. He can be very blunt with feedback which I really appreciate.
I really enjoyed ILLU 352 with Prochnow. He gives good assignments and applies them to real world. His feedback is direct and helpful!
Prochnow gives very career-oriented projects, and has discussions about working in the field. He gives good critique about how to make specific pieces better, but mostly focuses on how projects would work in the field if you were hired for a job. Lets us leave class after getting feedback so attendance is semi-optional
Never responds to emails but he's upfront about that so that's good I guess. Fun projects that are different from other Illustration classes. He gives useful feedback and encourages fun discussions during critique.
Prochnow is straightforward and honest with his critiques. Throughout the semester I found I was improving with every project. Prochnow care's about his students and wants to see us all succeed. If I had the chance I would retake his class. A plus is he lets students leave early if they don't prefer to work in the classroom. Thanks Prochnow! :)
Chill class environment, gives solid critique. I encourage building a good working relationship. Group projects and somewhat specific assignments might come up every once in a while; heads up.
He does projects that he thinks are interesting, which are pretty cool to a lot of people but aren't for everyone sometimes. In junior year at least he lets you do specific pieces geared towards what you want to do and gives very good critique. He is very honest and calm with you, and is one of my personal favorite professors I've had.
Doesn't respond to emails but tells you that, has clear office hours to make up for it though. Gives your more unique projects, which I thought was fun. Might make you do a group project, either with the whole class or a smaller group.
Prochnow is the best professor I've ever had. Over the course of my sophomore year, I had him for three classes. Taking him was the best decision I ever made! He's brutally honest and accepts nothing but the best from his students, even in the thumbnailing stage. He's been a guiding figure in my career, and I recommend him to everyone I know.
Prochnow was awesome! I had him for illustration 1 as well as digital illustration and he gave great critiques. He always gave super helpful answers whenever I asked him for help/advice.
Love this teacher! Knows what he is talking about and will tell you his opinion about yours, for better or worse. Do not take it personally. Grades fair but at a professional standard, so be prepared for a learning curve! His class is best if you participate and actually talk to him, he's a great professor but even better if you get to know him.
If you can take his class, I've never seen myself grow so much in one semester. He is so caring and like a father or uncle figure. Wonderful critique, super forward about what you need or what he wants to see from you. Overall, he is my favorite professor so far!!! Love ya Prochnow!!
Had him for Illustration 1. He definitely lives up to his reputation as a bit harsh but you can tell it comes from genuine love and care for his students and their work. I have improved so much in this class and every project I've made has been portfolio-worthy.
He's one of the toughest teachers I've had in the last two years and I would do it all again. I've been pushed to do better each project, even if each of them were very different. Aside from growing as an artist, Prochnow also introduced a lot of different types of illustration careers. Highly recommend him for people looking for a good challenge.
He's a silly guy
Prochnow is a wonderfully challenging professor. You can tell he really wants his students to go into the industry ready with realistic but high standards and expectations. Assignments are geared towards portfolio building and gives honest and straight forward critique at the risk of seeming blunt. 10/10 a fun guy as well outside of critique.
