Uhmm, where do I begin. This is the hardest class I've ever taken. There is ALOT of self-learning; which can be hard when you have no clue what the book is talking about. Tests are hard, but he's an OK grader. I study about 2 hrnight and average below a C on exams TL;DR he's smart, but his teaching style; ehhh... I'd be lucky if I finish with a C
If you're a genius in mathphysics, I would highly recommend him. He's by far the most communicative, and helpful instructor I've ever had. Answers emails immediately and makes an extreme amount of effort to help you out if you're struggling. The workload, however, is insane. 4 hours a day easily, and some of that hardest and harshest tests EVER.
Caleb was a great teacher, really interested and knowledgeable about Physics and gave good lectures. However, he gave out a ridiculous amount of assignments and overall his class was tough. Made me change my major, however if you're up for it, he still is a great teacher.
Caleb's class is tough, no doubt about it, but he wants students to succeed, and will work hard if you are also willing to work hard. Skip classes, skip reading, and blowoff homework and you will crash and burn. I think he is VERY good preparation for folks that want to move on to UW or other big programs.
Caleb is a great teacherlecturer and is alway willing to help you in any way that he can. He does assign tough tests and a lot of homework, but if you can stick with it, you can learn skills in his class that will prepare you for success in higher level classes. I know I have.
The man
Caleb Teel is a passionate and very helpful physics professor. I would say he was one the few Bellevue College physics professors that tries very hard to explain physics in a clear and concise way so that his students understand the material. The only problem I had with his class is the fact that he assigns WAY TOO MUCH homework.
Had 121 with Caleb and took his 122 this quarter. The guy is a phenomenal lecturer, and has one of the most helpful office hours I've ever attended. Labs reports are graded tough, but there is plenty of feedback and he teaches you to perform at grad school level. He truly challenges his students, and sets us up for success. Will take his Phys123.
Professor Teel made me realize that Physics is everything I wanted it to be. Its terrifically challenging and interesting. His lectures are captivating and he has a great sense of humor. Other than the insane amount of homework and soul crushing test grades, I'm sad this class had to end. It is NOT easy. You'll work your ass off, but you'll learn.
Caleb is a good person but I don't feel like he's a good teacher unless you guys are one on one with him. His lectures are kind of sporadic and he mostly sticks to proofs and demonstrations. Only recently did he start to actually lecture and give examples. I hope it stays this way.
Caleb is the best college professor I've had. He definitely made me love physics, especially with his fascinating lectures and numerous demos. However, be prepared to work really hard and expect lots of assignments with tight deadlines. Definitely go to his office hours(really helpful) and practice lots of problem solving. Would take again!
Super hot, easy to listen to, great demos. however, I don't really feel like I learned anything in his class.
He gave our midterms back the Thursday before finals week to review. Then, assigned two formal labs due AFTER our final exam. I would avoid taking him as he is worthless at giving assignments back and sticking to a schedule.
Without a doubt the best teacher I've had. The material is hard but I've never had a professor that cared so much about the success of his students. He is always willing to meet with students one on one to help them out if they are having trouble, and the lectures are very interesting. None of the assignments are too hard if you do the reading.
Was a great course and I learned alot but he doesn't hand assignments back quickly. We had a formal lab report due AFTER the class final! Sucks to have to work on a major project while trying to study for finals. Definitely could've used another lecture or review for the final instead of starting an entirely new project just a few days prior.
I understand that sometimes we lose a lot of time due to weather or campus shut downs but the pace he goes is way too fast. Be prepared for labs on top of other labs. Late feedback, lots of online and written labs. We do practice problems every now and then but his quizzes (not pop quiz), midterm, and final are way harder than what was done in clas
He did not grade any of our labs the whole quarter until the very end. Then he assigned three formal lab write ups, two extremely long mastering physics assignments 2 days before the final. Also he does not give the answer to any of his problems in class.
He's a nice person and wants you to succeed. He tries to make phys engaging, but doesn't succeed. Lots of reading, reading summaries with mandatory surveys without following up. Talks irrelevantly and long winded. Will only in office hours. Didn't return graded assignments or provide helpful feedback for most assignments, even at end of quarter.
His educational methods and expectations are unclear.
Super nice guy but terrible teaching methods. Unreasonably tough tests and a lot of irrelevant work (like weekly summaries). Good luck to those who have a life outside of physics. He teaching schedule is very unorganized. Trust me when i say avoid his class if you need an A.
So much homework and without review. The formal lab report can kill your time, even through it is group project. Be careful you don't chose above 3 classes include his, or you won't have time to do other things. Be Einstein, or don't chose his class.
He might be a good physicist, however, he is extremely not appropriate to be a physics instructor. His passion to physics was honorable, but his teaching method was not available for students, especially for those guys whose majors were not physics. He might be better after he increases his method of being with students around the world.
Alright, here's the deal, if you are willing to work your butt off, take Caleb. He is passionate about physics, but he is still trying to figure out his own teaching methods. He assigns more homework than you think possible to complete, but he understands we are only human and is fair when grading. He may low-key screw you over on Capstone though.
He was a very good professor, multiple ways of teaching so you can decide which method you liked best, tests were easy, but lots of homework assigned.
The hardest class I've taken at BC. The workload is insane, too much to even solidify anything before you have to move on. Exams are pretty tough, HW is manageable. GRADES EXTREMELY SLOW. Super helpful and caring teacher, though. You can tell he wants his students to succeed, but his lectures were alright at best, so go to office hours if you can.
I love this Physic 109 class. The whole class is like going through myth buster episode. He is patient with students and explain things very well. If you really want to learn, take his class. If you want min work and easy grade, he is not your professor.
Feedback comes back so late that you can't really internalize it, makes it really hard to know what you did right or wrong. Office hours didn't fit with my schedule at all, and email responses were minimal if not non-exsistant. One of the most frustrating classes in terms of communication.
Professor Teel is very passionate about physics and you can see it by how enthusiastic he is for the lecture despite teaching for hours on end. The class is very hard but, it is physics so just put in the effort and really do every assignment and never miss class. If you plan on getting an easy A this is not the class to take. Take this class alone
Caleb is an enthusiastic teacher. You can tell he really loves physics. However his grading very unfair. I 4.0'd the bio series, chem series, ochem series, and my other physics courses. I barely scraped by with a B in Calebs class, and it wasn't for lack of effort. You'll learn a lot with Caleb, but your GPA will suffer.
Pros: Great lectures, has lots of office hours and is ready to explain concepts, really puts effort into good lab experiences Cons: Lots of homework (maybe a neutral, not necessarily a 100% con) Doesn't return a lot of homework or labs (at least you got to do the lab is what I think)
Caleb is intelligent and he cares about his students and wants you to learn and succeed. You will learn a lot in his class. However, the amount of homework/ busy work that does not help you at all he gives out is borderline outrageous for a physics 114 class. Don't take him unless you want to work hard and be graded harshly.
It was terrible. Truly, the worst class I have ever taken. Most questions I had were answered vaguely or even with "I don't know". Lectures were just going through problems. You could tell Caleb never did the problems before class because he always made a mistake 20 minutes in that meant you learned nothing. Grades tough. Insane amount of petty HW.
Great lecturer, but not very organized. Refused to post grades on canvas and didn't hand back the majority of assignments, so final grade was essentially a surprise. Gave great feedback, though
usually i don't need the two hours out of class for every hour in class, but for this class i was spending probably 3 hours per 1 hour at least. this class should be a 7 credit for the amount of work required. He doesn't announce homework until the week before its due so there is no opportunity to work ahead.
Caleb is by far the worst professor I have ever had and I have had some bad ones. He is unclear in his expectations and unwilling to hear any feedback that contradicts him. I withdrew from his class because of how terrible of a professor he is, mind you I was still getting an A. I don't recommend anyone take this class or go to Bellevue college.
Infectious enthusiasm - if physics is something you're into. His classes can run over time or be disorganized, so be ready to read a bit before class if you expect to keep up each day.
Too much work. Doesn't know how to explain things. You are just supposed to know things by yourself. He seems nice at first, but then everything changes. I Don't recommend him
Class was horribly organized. Created assignments at the last minute, lectures did not help with understanding/completing the problem sets(Problems were excruciatingly difficult, and this is coming from a 4.0 student that got into EE at UW Seattle 1 week after dropping this class). Inconsistent availability in office hours. Worst class ever at BC.
Disorganized, TONS of work, you will get done with a 4 hour assignment only to realize that you also have a formal lab due in the next few days. Throws equations and theory at you in lecture and then expects you to be able to solve a multi-step applied problem. This class will make you pull your hair out.
Terrible experience. Huge course load that is also very disorganized so it is hard to follow along with. One of the worst professors I have had.
This class was INTENSE, but Caleb is the best physics prof I've had. He loves teaching and cares about his students. Lectures were helpful and engaging, though there were not enough of them. Great with questions. However, the work was overload, often assigned last minute. Takes FOREVER to grade. This class takes all of your energy to pass it.
There is so much work, he gives really confusing lectures, and the class is very disorganized.
This class was taken during the coronavirus epidemic. It is impossible to reach him by email unless you ask him about something during class. There is an insane amount of work and no content to prepare you for tests and quizzes. We are getting 20% of the amount of the lectures for a Monday-Friday classes but 100% of the workload.
Physics with Caleb was definitely one of the hardest things that I've ever done. His communication is awful (takes about 7 days to respond to an e-mail--if he even does). Often times he is very vague and answers questions with questions, his expectations are absent. Loads tons of busywork into his courses to keep people from failing his classes.
Taken during Spring 2020 quarter. Caleb is by far the worst professor I have ever had. His expectations are unclear, his communication skills are not existent, and you will receive more busy work than you have ever had in your entire life. He is ridiculous. Do yourself a favor and avoid the class until there is someone else teaching it.
I took Caleb online. He is a very kind person but his class is incredibly difficult. Assigns tons of daily hw (3-5 assignments/day). If you want to do well in his class, you need to form a study group ASAP & ask him questions about the material you don't understand. The longer you wait to ask a question on a problem, the more behind you will get.
I admire Caleb for his passion in Physics, and that his style of teaching encourages you to be practical with what you're learning. The real problem is that his style isn't very well suited to an online class, and I think a lot of my peers struggled for this reason. The one thing I dislike is that he doesn't grade your submissions until the end.
He won't provide a course schedule at the beginning of the quarter & he thinks its reasonable to cram 5 hard chapters in less than three final weeks of the quarter. As of today, we still don't know most of our grades for quizzes and labs and the quarter is almost over. He will overload you with assignments due at the last minute. Do not recommend.
DO NOT TAKE THIS CLASS. Caleb is the worst professor I have EVER HAD IN MY LIFE. He will assign hw and it will be due in less than 12 hours, grades everything the day before the quarter ends, breakout rooms every single class and does not go over ANY material, cancels class 10 minutes before it starts, does not respond to emails, GRADES HARSHLY!!!!
A very time-consuming class. Caleb is a friendly and brilliant physicist but not a great teacher. However, if you spend enough time with him, he is not that bad after all. Although there are tons of homework, these scores save me at the end of the quarter, and you will always get most of the credits if you draw the diagram, even if you are wrong.
Gave the class almost 200 assignments in 55 school days. Extremely unclear instructions with labs and extremely unclear grading. Takes forever to grade. Somehow manages to patronize the whole class. Our class started with 30 people and ended with 10. The average on the final was 50%. DO NOT TAKE THIS TEACHER, AVOID HIM LIKE THE PLAGUE.
Caleb is a nice person and great physicist but I found myself extremely depressed by taking his class. He gives so much busy work which makes it hard to keep up if youre taking other classes. This class will turn your love for physics off entirely. We are not even mid way through and I cry every time I get a notification from this class. DONT TAKE
Worst class experience I have ever had. Now, I'd like to assume that this is mainly because of the online switch as this is a lab science. But if you are still in online school, avoid this terrible, terrible professor. I dread waking up for this class more then anything. The guy just yaps and yaps, expects something out of nothing and overall sucks
If you have anything else to do outside of this physics class DO NOT TAKE THIS CLASS. Caleb teels class will need ALL of your time and energy. I cant emphasize enough the enormous amount of assignments this class has. You will not know your grade due to Caleb not using canvas so who knows if youre passing or failing.
I like Caleb for many reasons but teaching methods, group work sucks. Phy109 is all about group projects, and being an online class not all the members in your group will participate. You will not pass Phy 109, even if you give your best effort unless in a good team. You will receive all feedback at the end of the quarter, so no time to progress.
Teel tends to create overly demanding expectations for students at the beginning of a quarter. However, he is genuinely very receptive to feedback, so if students complain, he will remove assignments and relax his standards. He is very passionate, and is always happy to talk to students about their problems.
The ridiculous teacher I ever took, I already studied 2 yrs at BC, and this is the worst instructor I ever met, tons of useless regulations about homework, no live lectures AT ALL then what is the point of meeting every day? Basically a self-learning class with tons of homework and group projects.
His expectations are non-existent, but he is quick to take out the red pen and correct everything and anything. Asking questions does not help. I have never in my life been so petrified of giving a wrong answer. Also he is literally the worst communicator (in writing, in lectures, etc.) I have EVER had in a professor.
If you're a freshman taking your first college class or are the type of student who benefits from a rigid timeline to keep up, give him a try. If you are a student who can and prefers to manage their own time, AVOID AT ALL COSTS. He assigns piles of busywork that supposedly is for the benefit of the students when it does not work for everybody.
Insane amount of work, said this class is expected to be 30 hours a week outside of class. I feel like hes a nice teacher and the exams are fair, it is just a huge time sink. He is also an extremely slow grader so you have no idea about how youre doing in the class. Some assignments are useful while some of them are completely useless (like labs)
The class average for the tests was around 50%. Be ready to do assignments all day long with no end in sight. If you miss a day or slip up, you will never catch up.
WORST TEACHER EVER. If you are thinking about taking one of his classes DONT, he couldn't care less about his students, he picks favorites and once your on his bad side he'll ruin your grade. Doesn't grade anything until last minute, he yells at students for asking questions, gives bad grades with ZERO explanation, and NEVER responds to emails.
If you are reading all these negative reviews right now, just know that they are all true. And if you are deciding whether or not to take one of his classes, don't do it, save yourself. I wasn't so lucky.
You are pretty much on your own. Zoom meetings are for simple classwork rather than lectures. You would have to read pages after pages, do a bunch of hw every day to understand what you are studying. Mr Teel is a nice man but his teaching style is not great. I've never before seen so many lost and unprepared classmates in a class like mine now.
This professor gives several assignments every single day, and then docks points with no rhyme or reason. Nine out of ten zoom meetings involve putting us in breakout rooms to figure out a problem. The average grade for all his exams is 45%. I think I'm one of his less favorite students, because I was put with the same incompetent group twice.
Gives great feedback on homework if you ask for it. The class is heavily group project focused. There were 1-2 asynchronous days most weeks for lectures, and class time was used for group problems and labs. During group problems, there's active feedback for where you are in the problem.
Best teacher ever.
I pick this professor cuz he was the only option for the quarter. 3-4 assignments a day and lots of lecture reading, spend 40+ hours a week in this class. Now I regret not dropping this class. Trust me, all the bad reviews you see on this web are real, give yourself a chance, and don't take it. you will thx me later.
Do NOT take this class. you will spend 40+ hours a week even if you are a good student. group labs are never ending & the expectation is unrealistic. U will have a capstone project lab informal lab homework studying for an exam and be expected to meet with him outside of class at many times during quarter. time is not worth
The class schedule, homework schedule, and test schedules are super unorganized. This professor was my only option for the class, and I am seriously considering just dropping the class in a couple of days. Get ready to spend an hour or so after class to talk to groups, or have to talk to him about all the projects and quizzes he assigns.
Best teacher ever!!
Take this professor if you want to fail your other classes. He won’t give you time to study for other classes. Expectations are out of mesure. Please, protect your mental health, don’t take him. Endless homework and labs. This guy should only teach Physics major students.
Caleb is nice but his class is a horrible experience. There is LOTS of work and important assignments never get graded. We had 2 labs and never got a grade back for even the first one. The final grade is determined by his "professional judgement." If you work or can take another teacher, I highly recommend another teacher.
I really enjoyed Caleb, perhaps I have nostalgia glasses on as it has been a few years since I've been in his class, but while I don't think I was the smartest kid in the class, he still ended up inspiring me with his work ethic, passion for teaching and overall caring demeanor. I went on to start teaching physics mostly because of Caleb.
Although Professor Teel is a very nice person, he's not a good professor. You can definitely tell that he's passionate about physics and that he really loves his job, but he is extremely unorganized. He doesn't put grades on Canvas and one question on our test was worth 20 points but we never did anything similar to it in class.
3 exams and a final, plus 4 quizzes. Grades slowly and returned lab reports for revision in the last week of the quarter. I gave him an additional star because he is willing to listen to complaints and adjust assignments. Despite meeting daily, there were still many online lectures to watch. Lots of textbook reading assignments. Very disorganized.
If you are an earnest student who puts time to understand the concepts, you will do great. It's a reverse classroom, where you do lectures outside of class and problems in class (still outside hw though). He wants you to succeed, he even goes out of his way to make the time to meet every student outside of class.
He knows a lot but his lectures do a bad job at teaching. He was fun and was usually a great person to talk to as long as he was not busy or doing something else. Only reason I rated him so low is because of the final for 109, where you create an experiment, perform it, and write a report. The criteria was too confusing for how much it was worth.
His lectures are fun and so worth the knowledge that's taught! He does a great job making everything relatable to the real world and makes it fun to do in the labs. His organization and ability to answer questions in the moment are lacking but mainly due to the tight schedule in the quarter. Still worth taking though if you have the chance!
Never disliked such a funny person as Caleb. He is a good person, but a terrible teacher. His class is so disorganized. Randomly goes from doing my open math lab assignments every week for 6 weeks straight to instead having us do the weekly problems on paper out of the text book with a days warning only. Do not take if you are working.
Caleb is genuinely a very nice guy, though his class is nearly impossible if you are not gifted with natural smarts. He assigns absurd amounts of homework, much of which seems very unnecessary for learning concepts. He does not focus as much on physics problems as he should. Though you are expected to known all types of problems when exams come.
Caleb is the best teacher I had at Bellevue College. He did his very best to be accessible to students and to help others learn. You can tell how much he loves physics as his lectures are incredibly entertaining. The material is certainly really hard, but Caleb makes it better.
Tough grader, but if you do very well in his class, you are going to do very well in most other physics classes.
He's nice but the worst teacher I've had. I loved math and physics, but hes made me hate it. He's unclear on homework and tests, with grades only coming at the end of the quarter, adding stress. I've never left a class feeling so frustrated. The material wouldn't be hard if he taught and did his job, but instead, there's endless busy work.DONOTTAKE
This professor's teaching style is disorganized, his feedback is unhelpful, and his approach to student engagement is discouraging. In 55 days, assigned nearly 200 assignment, an extremely large and unreasonable workload. If you value your time, energy, and GPA, avoid taking his class at all costs.
Caleb Teel was very disorganized and spent all the lecture time (5 days a week) talking about information we already knew. It was all online lectures and expected to have 3 hours of homework everyday. I had roughly 18 assignments every single week. His class is relying on textbook reading entirely.
Took him a very long time to grade quizzes and group lab reports, so went into the next ones without knowing what I needed to improve on/what I got wrong. He's a nice guy he just seemed to have a lot going on when I took his class in fall 2024. DON'T take unless you have prior knowledge of physics/are capable of learning it independently.
I am in his winter 2025 class, and so far honestly he is a good professor, I struggle hard in the class but he tries his damn hardest to make sure students succeed in his class. He is a GOOD professor, the only reason I wouldn't give him a five is that I dislike how the class is disorganized at times, but other than that, I would retake him.
His classroom is perpetually cold, just like his personality. I knew right off the bat, when our first lab was measuring something- anything- that he didn't really care to teach us.
Physics isn't easy for most, but Caleb is very accessible, including Zoom office hours. The syllabus outlines study hours needed for success, which matched my experience (take this seriously). There's a lot of work, but Caleb is fair and supportive. Of all my college courses, this was one of the classes where I learned the most. – Fall 2024
Lots of assignments, bad pacing, and slow grading. We had 20-25 assignments due every week. He spent 4 weeks on 1d motion, which most people had already seen, and we had no time for harder concepts at the end of the quarter. Outside of lecture, prepare to watch 1-2 hours of videos as homework. Midterm was returned on last day of the quarter.
Caleb is the best in-person physics professor at BC! Super caring and is always open to help. The class is very busy-work heavy with about 4 formal group labs. Tests are not that hard. Caleb is very passionate about what he teaches and can sometimes get sidetracked so just politely redirect him back to topic. Teaches basics super well.
