Very interesting instructor, full of funny stories. Unfortunately if you need to learn Biology, this IS NOT the place to be.
This teacher is horrible. First of all he is unclear at his lectures and has this boring monotone voice. When you ask question instead of helping he will sarcastically make fun of you. ANd his test you never know what exactly will be on it.Dont take him!

This prof will make you squirm when trying to be funny, which he is not! Boring stories, unclear note-taking format, rigid attend. policy, unfair quizzes. Falls behind then rushes you for tests. If you take him, study the sample questions in back of the req package & less time on the book. Trust me!
Dr.Yorke is great! This class is soeasy if you opt to do the Optionally Directed Independant Study Project, which counts for 3/4 of your grade and if you go see him he practically will do for you. This leaves a whopping 22 points needed for final to get an A. Take him he is the best.
I was in this class EVERYDAY and on time for an entire semester, asked questions, got a study plan and still failed this class. I was just as clueless when I left at the end of the semester as I was in the beginning. This teacher does not know how to teach in my opinion. Take someoen else.
Dr. Yorke is GREAT! If you are interested in learning and want to achieve the most possible, he is the teacher for you. If you want an easy teacher who gives out A's even to the lazy ones, than avoid him, I dont want to see you suffer. Those that dont like them dont like science!
Horrible Teacher probably the worst at AVC do yourself a favor and DO NOT TAKE HIM. He tell you to buy a study packet that is outlined to his notes but the thing does not even make sense to what he say. Avoid yourself an F and stay away from this so called Biology Teacher
This is the worst teacher, he's such a jerk, i have good grades i'm in the honors program at school and i did horrible on the first test, he's not helpful and rude, when you ask for help he looks and you like your dumb and tells you to read it again until you get it, don't take him he sucks!!!!!!!!!
I studied my ass off and couldn't get higher than a c in his class. He dragged my whole average down. He makes you buy this ridiculous note taking packet that is virtually useless. He's rude and arrogant and wants you to fail.
Save yourself alot of frustration and do NOT take this class if you are NOT serious about science. Dr. Yorke is a field biologist and is very demanding of his students; this he makes note of in his syllabus. His exams are brutal. Make sure you have the textbook downloaded into your brain.
He doesn't care for you, the student, at all. If he's unhappy about his life, he should not make our life miserable.

though he is a field biologist, he does not know how to teach. he is rude, arrogant, crude, and sometimes prejudiced. He plays favorites and if you ask for help or advice he will say why did you talk my class, or nothing at all. even if you study really hard you will have a hard time. he likes to fail.
In my entire college career I have not failed a class until I took this class. His tests and quizes have nothing to do with what he lectures on in class. He bases them on vague scientific names on them with no other testing of true understanding of biology. His crude humor is inappropriate and unhelpful and rude when asking for help. DO NOT TAKE.
I never failed a biology class until I took this one. He was always rude and did not like to answer questions. His lectures were often off topic. The tests were completely different from lecture. Went to CSUN and took it and got an A, and he called me lazy.
This is the greatest science teacher available at AVC. If you are serious about science, and would like to develop a career around it, do hesitate in taking him. I took him in 2004 and have been extremely successfull in science ever since.
I hate his class. I never understood what he was talking about. I failed, and took it again with Brister and got an A.

not my favorite. tests were hard and i had him for lecture and lab. he did pick favorites, but i think i was one of them. he was always relatively nice to me
I can stand this guy. He has problem with saying the words sex or sexual. He muffles it as if his class are a bunch of immature kids. He needs to speak up too. I feellike he is only talking to first three rooms when he has 25+ people in class.

Dr. Yorke mumbles when he lectures, making them even more boring than they already are.
Dr. Yorke is nice enough, but seems more about him than the students. He's also an excessively demanding teacher. You can survive his class only if you are a genius, or if you are the hardest-working person at AVC. Sorry Dr. Yorke! - I just have to say . . . don't take him!
He made a subject I thought would be interesting VERY boring. He has no personality, and does not include the students in any way. His teaching methods are poor, as he shows absolutely no enthusiasm in his work. I do not recommend this one.
Like some of the other science teachers at AVC, Dr. Yorke tends to be in University mode much of the time, which means the class is not 'dumbed down,' just because it's a community college course. I reccomend it as an indicator class for bio majors; if you can't do well in it, you probably should consider changing majors.
well what can i say... has lots of knowledge but seems to turn students away from the subject. hardest working people have a hard time surviving his class. do not take him.... you were warned!
Bio is his life. The best thing to do is show interest in what he is teaching whether or not you like it- it will help you. He is quite difficult so i recommend that if you take him dont take too many other subjects because this class does take up a lot of time. If you are majoring in bio take him because although difficult you learn a hek of a lot
Very hard for the first half of the semester to weed out all non motivated students. Second Half of semester He is easier, and more understanding. Tests are slightly easier and he is more generous with SAS grades.
He is crazy. 3/4 of the class ends up dropping and most of the class failed the first 2 midterms. Be prepared to dedicate at least 2 hours a day in reading for this class. He does not teach what is on the test. Their is a SAS quiz and a lab quiz each week. The paper/project is the largest part of the grade and he offers very little help on it.
If you want to pass biology, I recommend not taking Dr. Yorke. He is hard, rambles on and doen't get through half of the required material. His lab quizzes are also hard to understand and if you have a question, he really doesn't help you. If you want an A in biology, do not take Dr. Yorke
Not an easy class,be prepared to work and study as if it were a real college class.If you can handle this type of class then you are probably not lazy.People who do well in this class can one day become nurses and bio majors.Always on topic and very helpful.tests and quizzes are multiple choice,so really they are cake if you study. mr. york is a nice guy but he teaches is off base with the OLD test that he gives his lectures are all about bio but his test are more like read between the lines and figure out if I went over this or not TRUST ME. Look at the back of you lect.note book at the pract. test as he gives his lectures and make sure you ask a lot of ? ASK ASK ASK ASK
I would say he seems like a nice guy and knows his information but doesn't focus on whats going to be on the test. I should have went to this site before taking him and i would have known. Might as well read the book and drop the class to save you some money because the book will teach you better. He keeps talking about africa and his trips.
I am a biology major and I absolutely hated this class. It was so hard and boring. He told you things that would be on the test and they were never on the tests. The tests were super hard. Dont take this class unless you are only taking one class and you are really interested in biology.
i agree with the other comments.he does not tell u anything about the tests.all his lectures are boring he doesnt relate any of his stories to what he is supposedly teaching.it is all about africa and ireland and who knows what.i do not recommend him.
He is a terrible teacher, don't count on any understanding or leniency. He has a terrible sarcastic personality. I was literally 6 points short of and A out of 340 points as well as having absolute perfect attendance and he still gave me a B. He should have retired back when the dinasaurs died out and what he teaches is out of date.
He was interesting teacher. Helpful, told lame jokes, friendly. always made time for the students during office hours.

Great teacher, teaches from memorized lecture notes. Has lecture book for class that is fill-in and test samples are in back of lecture note book.

Dr. Yorke presented interesting and highly relevant lectures on plants and animals. His anecdotes regarding travels were funny and made learning easier. Although his tests stressed critical thinking, I found them fair and relevant to his lectures and the material in the text that was assigned reading. Some students dropped the class with complaints
He is a hard teacher. I think he tries to give his students a feel for upper division bio. Legitimate research is expected; he will tell you whats up with your project but you definatly have to ask.

Really dry, uncaring and just plain rude.Being a Bio major, I was excited for this class. So much for that..While he does know a lot, he does a great job of killing his listeners with dry jokes and boredom. I can not believe this man's attitude towards other humans. I wonder at times if he even has a heart. Maybe he left it somewhere in Malaysia
Dr. Yorke is a great teacher. He may be hard but this is college, not grade school. Those who whine about him, are not taking this class seriously. I'm learning a lot from him. I enjoy his lecture and lab.
Dr. Yorke is an incredibly interesting instructor. I enjoy his lectures and lab discussions. He brings a wealth of personal experience to tyhe classroom and the serious, motivated students greatly appreciate his efforts. I highly recommend his class for anyone interested in the life sciences.

Dr. Yorke was my favorite teacher in the sciences at AVC. He patiently explained difficult concepts and was very helpful. His lectures and labs are interesting and fun. He also is good about returning quizzes and tests promptly and will take time to go over tests with students who wish to know the answers. One of the best teachers at AVC!
This was the most interesting and entertaining science class I have had in college. Dr. Yorke is an exciting teacher. He really knows his material and makes sure students understand. His exams are challenging but with a little preparation, relatively straight forward.

He rocks! he helps prepare students perpare for harder biolgy classes to those who r transfering or majoring in science. Great teacher. The only way 4 students to pass is to pay attention and he shall help in any way to help u understand the material

Dr. Yorke is a very intelligent teacher. Only the knuckleheads will complain about him. He is hard but you do learn a lot about biology as long as u put in the effort. He is more than willing 2 help. I highly recommend him if ONLY U R SERIOUS about school!!

The worst bio. teacher I ever had. He does not know how to speak up so the class can hear him. He dropped a girl because her cell phone rang (she didn't answer it). He dropped me because I was in the hospital for ten days and thus missed class. He is a bittler old man who needs to find a different profession.
This guy was not helpful. He has this class project and he seemed really biased against my ideas. I didnt understand half the tests because he used words I never heard of before. His questions were unclear and its your fualt for not answer them exactly how he likes it. DO NOT TAKE THIS TEACHER UNLESS YOU ALREADY KNOW BIOLOGY.
Has an interesting sense of humor. Sometimes he gets a little ****ed when explaining the lab. I find it funny some don't. Pretty much whole grade is based on quizzes so study.

I would highly recommend any student that takes Dr. Yorke's class to read the text, and be able to understand what you have read or minus well drop the class. Also your treated as an elementary student your not allowed to used the restroom during lecture 1hour &20min. and your not allowed to chew gum, drink any beverage unless it's water or eat.
Worst teacher at avc. Goes about teaching the class in an unprofessional manner. His humor is outdated. Tries to hard to befriend students. AVOID TAKING HIS CLASSES 70% OF STUDENTS DROPPED HIS CLASS. My advice is to study from day one and reread all assigned chapters. When enrolled in his class there is no time for relaxation if you want that A.

Great instructor. Most students who failed were the clowns who came in late & didn't study. The few serious students (Like I am) managed to pass the class & learn from Dr. Yorke. I highly recommend him for science majors. He has a sense of humor only the intelligent students understand. Enjoyed his class.
I got an A in his class but I wouldn't recommend this teacher to anyone. Dr. York is the most boring teacher I've ever had. I fell asleep in his class almost every day. I love biology but somehow he managed to make it boring. If you don't mind boring then he isn't so bad, he is a fair grader. Don't buy his lecture notes they don't match the lecture

Dr. Yorke is a great prof. Only the lazy students who failed this MAJORS class would complain. Those who r serious about school found Dr. Yorke 2 b intelligent and funny prof who helped those who asked. Highly recommended 4 those who want to learn.
to anyone taking his bio 120 course my advice is to study as soon as possible i mean now. Do not slack off in his class or you will regret it. If you plan on being lazy drop his class because 80 percent of the class dropped by the end. Last year in his class there were only 7 left out of the 24 who enrolled.
Okay so I'm a Bio major so I do in fact know my stuff. I hated Rainbow but did in fact learn some stuff and got a good grade. Yorke simply didn't care. We ended the year with 13 people in the class and nobody got above a C and busted my ass. He's painfully bad jokes too. I'm an honors student, so this isn't an idiot writing this. DON'T TAKE HIM!

I don't know if I would recommend him to everyone. He didn't seem too interested, as a matter of fact he seemed pretty bored. On the first day of class he said "You guys aren't brilliant, you're in community college." Sarcasm, I know but was it appropriate? you decide.
Great humor. I'm a young student and enjoyed his jokes. His lectures are very clear and to the point.
He wasn't very helpful, the most informative day of class was when we had a sub. He doesn't really instruct he hands out work and you are on your own.I wouldn't take him if you have the option.
Do not take this class.He literally spend the last 2 hours of class on his computer every time. Unenthusiastic, and puts down his students in a supposed form of "sarcasm".I don't know who wrote those positive comments likely he did. Take another teacher !

I ended up dropping because of a bad combination of classes but all I can say is he's nice and funny and helpful when asking for help. Just study very hard or else you're screwed. I think he's just trying to give students a feel for how hard being in this major really is.
It's survival of the fittest in Yorke's class. If you possess genes that give you the ability to study hard and pay attention in lecture then you will be selected for a good grade in this course. The research project can be very rewarding/insightful. Professional and passionate about bio. The Dawkins book was a fantastic addition to this course!

Dr.Yorke is not a good teacher at all. He might know alot, but he is not teacher material. He talks at you and not to you. He doesn't explain anything and if you have a question he doesn't answer it. If you are a first time student in biology 101, he is not the teacher to takefor lab or lecture. He thinks he is funny, but he is not at all.

I took this teacher a couple years ago for Biology 120. Very hard class but very beneficial for the Biology Majors. Extremely valuable to the faculty at AVC and has tons of life experience that helps with what he is teaching. I was very lucky to have him. He is funny and cares about his field.

A great science lab class. Sometimes challenging, always interesting. Dr. Yorke really knows his stuff.
Not an easy class for me. Dr. Yorke gave good explanations of difficult material and graded fairly. Attendance in the class is mandatory. Lab is divided into teams, which helps a lot. I highly recommend this teacher for those students who are curious about biology.
I LOVED going to Dr. Yorke's lab. He made teaching fun and we were able to work in teams which I enjoyed! I strongly recommend him to SERIOUS students!
A wonderful biology lab teacher. I ended up with only a C in the class but Dr. Yorke's lab was the best part of the course.
DONT TAKE HIM ! he is not helpful at all, he speaks too low and can barely hear his explanations. Whenever you ask for help he sends you to re read your lab manual.

DR. Yorke is a great teacher. I learned a lot during his class. He also a has a great sense of humor.
No need to do the preliminary lab report No study guide for lab practical. Poor amount of information given. 8 Quiz questions every day based of the booklet (some repeat the next week). the lab work is worth the other 2 points for a total of 10. 2 Lab practical worth 60 pnts each. Wrong questions are not reviewed from any test. I wouldn' retake him
Dr York was fair. Attendance is a must (quiz at the beginning of every class on the previous week's lab and the current) and you cannot be late. Listen to his instructions and work with your lab partners. For the lab practicals, just going over the labs worksheets for study material.
His rules for attendance and tardiness are ridiculous. He will not help you with any questions you have he just refers you back to the manual. He talks very low and is not very involved with the class
Weekly quizzes. Mainly on the lab itself. He leaves an hour to and hour and a half out of the three hour class period. Once I asked him for advice to improve my quiz scores and all he said was "use YouTube", not an easy class already. And he is deaf and speak low with a microphone on still when he gives his 40min lecture on what we will do on the lab prior. Wouldn't recommend.
HORRIBLE!!!!!!! Worse lab teacher to ever take! You can't make up any of his classes if you miss, he locks the door if you're late, which is ridiculous this is college not high school. You can't hear a thing he says even with a microphone and he leaves the room for about half the class time. You can't even bring in water A water bottle. Rules suck
Just no. He doesn't care about the student or their grade. Since the exams are based off lab work, make sure you go over it yourself and correct it, because he won't. I received an F in this class, but I passed biology with an A because my lecture professor actually cared enough to correct wrong answers. If you are currently taking him, good luck!
Don't take this class if you want to pass. He does not give nearly enough time for tests 35 sec a question was all that was given. He is super strict on phones they have to be turned off on the cubbies with your bag he can't even be able to see a water bottle in your cubbie or you will get kicked out. He dropped students w/o their knowledge

Quizzes every week , gets frusterated when asked questions, tries to hard to be funny. Doesn't understand other's situations and forces you to work on team with your table. And if you partners don't help you that's your problem.

I had a conference for work early in the semester, already paid for by supervisors long before the semester. Prof. Yorke refused to excuse the absence. Due to a strict absence policy, I was dropped (He drops after 2) with a month left in the semester. Did not help students. Left class for 20 minutes at a time regularly. Dry lectures.
Only grades you get are the quizes and two tests. The quizes are 8 questions everyday of class. Around 5 are from the previous class and 3 from the current one so you have to read ahead of time. Two points for attendance at the end. You just do the questions on the manual, show him, he checks it, and you can leave when your done (usually early).
You get a quiz at the first 10 minutes of class with 10 questions. Read your lab manual. 2 practicals "midterm" and "final" Hard to get in touch with outside of class. Doesn't email or answer phone. He is very passionate about what he teaches. I could have done better in lab if I studied better!
