Good teacher
No Comments
pretty easy, uses great examples, can win money in his class
easy for principles.....impossible test for higher level classes!!!!!
explains stuff clearly. gives out money. expects a lot. you learn a lot
best teacher in econ dept
Professor Blackwell teaches the material in a way that students can apply it to certain scenarios, instead of just giving definitions.
Great guy. Very helpful. Lectures are very informative. No attendance policy but coming to class is recommended.
Very easy class!! Nice, fair, and easy going teacher. Uses webct a lot... prequiz and postquiz for each chapter. Can win money, sometimes get out of class early, and no attendance policy.
To me Professor Black well is great teacher
He is a great teacher
easy enough for economics. you can not attend and get by with others notes, but class is very informative, interesting, and helpfull.
cool guy...very clear. lots of everyday examples. good lectures...webct lectures. very organized...tests are harder than what he makes you think...so study.
He's alright but be prepared to to do lots of webct. Lots of quizzes and journal responses, things that just annoy you. Overall he's not that hard but you have to keep up. Tests are more difficult than you would expect.
Great teacher compared to other teachers in the economic field.
the man
He is OK. Not easy, not hard. Tests are hard. No papers to write except for one at the end of the semester. Lots of webct, journals, quizzes, etc.
Makes class interesting, tests are moderatley difficult, very clear and organized teacher. MAde B with moderate effort
Econ is hard, but he makes everything as clear as possible. Homework can be difficult but he gives plenty of time and tries to help. Cares that students understand. Good all around teacher and class.
No Attendance policy, you can get by if you stick to online coursework and print lectures. However, it is better if you go to class because it's hard to know what material he'll use for testing if you don't.
ok teacher. not good, not bad. not attendance policy, online homework due once a week. only one very very easy 2 page paper. only problem is test are tricky. he tests on a harder level than he teaches. but its still not a horrible class.
Difficult subject. Great professor, uses online practice site for added help and homework grades. Teaches from power points that are also available online before class so you can follow along with him. Hard tests, but they are possible to do well on.
Hates to grade papers and homework, and will do anything to give him an excuse to give you a failing grade on items turned in. (this is stated in his sylabus) Uses a website that students have to pay for in addtion to a 70-90 dollar text book. Does not welcome open debate in his class. Be warned
He has the typical economist cockiness. Not bad for Econ though. He does not encourage discussions in class. Tests are tricky.
His class is not that hard at all. Just print out the powerpoints and go to class. There is no attendance policy, but he explains things in class so that you understand. Tests are only 20 multiple choice and a short answer. All his examples involve beer or hamburgers.
No attendence policy but hard to do well unless you follow along with powerpoints he puts up or whatnot.. need to read the book if you dont go to class. weekly online grades.. sucks they are tricky... econ is not enjoyable so it'll be hard to find a good class for the subject. he tries to make it fun but seriously... its econ
He's pretty good. You just know this guy came out of UVA... and probably about 3 years ago. But a really NICE dude. The subject is tricky.
Really good teacher, I would take his class again any day. Not an easy subject and tests are much harder than lectures make them out to be but if you study and read, it is not impossible. You will learn a lot!
Great Prof. Class is not bad at all considering the subject. Test are fairly easy assuming you go to class and read the power points. Easy B if you put in average effort. He is extremely good at explaining the material. He knows the material sucks and tries pretty hard to make it as interesting as he can. The guy is extremely smart.
Great teacher, but only two exams plus the final are given so there isn't much room for messing up.
Never read the book the whole semester and still made a B. 2 tests, final, and weekly homework problems on a website Aplia. Power points for each chapter of the book. Great guy. Take him.
This is the hardest class I've ever taken only because this guy doesn't know how to teach! He reads off of powerpoint and goes entirely too fast so you can't take good notes. I'm taking this class now and I am definitely going to fail. Hate the class...Hate the prof-if you want to keep your GPA-DON'T TAKE THIS CLASS!!
Tests aren't easy. One time class average was 62, but he has been curving them about 8 points. Uses Aplia. Nice guy, no attendance policy. I'm taking him for another Econ class.
This was harder than I thought it would be. Annoying Aplia problem sets every week. Tests were pretty tricky. Tries to explain things well but goes way too fast thru slides.
This class was so hard. Blackwell expects you to study 4 hours per every econ class! if you don't your test grade reflects it! don't be fooled by the pre-test, the real test is nowhere near that easy. He goes through his powerpoint to fast and doesn't explain things well...if you suck at math, his class is not for you!
His class was really hard.3 tests and tries to fool u with review test which is a lot simpler than the actual test. Actual test is no where near the expectation. Tries to explain well but goes really quick thru the slides. Not really understandable. Curves up the test if the average id really low. Think before you take his class
This professor is the absolute worst economics professor ever. His tests are very difficult because he words his multiple choice questions similiarly. He does not curve and the class average is always around 68.gives you 1 extra credit point if your group beats the other groups during his easy review quiz.lectures too fast. aplia does not help you.
Game Theory isn't your regular Econ class. It's definatly more interesting. 2 tests and a cumulative final. 5 homework assignments. There's a paper to write, but it's the easiest paper of your college career. Prof Blackwell's so nice and always willing to help. And best of all NO APLIA!
In the beginnig class was boring as we started off going over some econ basics, but it picked up steam. Textbook was boring, the readings he provided were better. 3 Hws, a midterm, and cummulative final. Blackwell is great for all econ classes, I've had him 4 times now. There is a 4 page paper, but you pick your own topic.
This class was very diffcult for me. The lectures were easy to understand but the tests were soooo hard. The answers trick you. 2 tests and a Final. Homework once a week that is due every Thursday night.
I highly recommend Blackwell. His tests are based almost entirely upon what he has taught in class and the textbook is barely, if at all, necessary. If you can do the problems he does in class you can definitely get As on his tests. Going to class is not technically required but very important to get a good grade.
ridiculous! the tests are retarded hard, and he grades harder, DO NOT take him. its the worst decision you will ever make. seriously, even if you go to every single class, his tests will go over your head, and he grades them ridiculously. BAD TEACHER.
Aplia is so hard but he really helps out with that for everyone equally. so don't worry about that. and he gave a bunch of extra credit aplia. all i did was study the practice tests and i did great. go to class and pay attention. i didn't really read the book. fun, practical lessons sometimes. cool guy.
great professor. i just took this class for fun this summer and ended up getting really in to economics. he makes the class interesting and is pretty funny. if you go to class everyday and do the practice tests you'll do fine. he has a nice curve on aplia too so that can help your grade
Good teacher, Blackwell manages to make the class somewhat entertaining with funny examples and some games, the homework is online and is a little bit hard but if you do all of it it really helps on the tests. I'm not one to put a ton of effort into my classes but this time I did and I got an A. Calvin is the man
Dr. Blackwell is great. If you have to take Econ definitely take him. This was by far one of the easiest classes I've taken in college. If you show up even half of the days of the week to class and do your homework, there's no reason not to get an A.
Awesome guy. Very approachable and willing to give help. Really explains the material. However, I hate Econ but its not the professor's fault.
Tests were on subjects discussed in class and could be reitterated through the text book which was helpful. then applying the concepts was taught through aplia which was challenging but very useful. practice tests were what I always studied with. Blackwell was one of my favorite professors so far, straight to the point and he really knows his stuff
Micro wasn't all that exciting for me, but he is an excellent teacher and very helpful. He is easy going and down to earth and really presents the information well. The weekly online homework is a pain and can be hard but definitely helps your grade.
Here is how the grading goes, 3 tests worth %15 each, homeworks is %15 (best 25 out of 30) and the final is %40. So lets say you get A on all of them and get a C on the final , you will get a B.
Would absolutely recommend. Very clear explanations. 4 tests and 1 final, final counts for 40%. You will have to study quite a bit for the tests, but class attendance isn't taken (I'd still recommend going--he explains the concepts very well). I would definitely take again! Not hard to to do well if you put some effort in.
Great professor! Seriously, one of the most helpful professors I have ever had. I am just not an economist so this class was difficult for me. If you work hard, read the book, ask questions, and try not to get angry doing aplia, you will learn a lot and leave his class economically enlightened.
This is absolutely the worst professor I have ever had at cofc and i am a rising senior. Aplia will make you SOOO MAD, and if you visit him in office hours he is not helpful at all....The class average on the last test was a D! DO NOT TAKE UNLESS YOU WANT TO HATE YOUR SCHEDULE YOUR WHOLE SEMESTER!
Relatable professor. Lectures didn't bore me. Weekly online assignments were rough. Do them early! Don't wait because they can be difficult or lengthy. Tests are multiple choice and can prove very difficult. Post below is correct. Last test average was a D. I got a 102%. Have someone to study and do Aplia with! It's hugely beneficial. Take notes!
Ok so how is it that i got the same grade in Organic Chem and this class? He needs to chill out with his tests and realize that no one with a dream will ever become an econ major. I hated this class when i took it, i hate everything about econ. Thank you professor Blackwell.
AWFUL!!!!! WILL RUIN YOUR LIFE AND SEMESTER! DON'T TAKE BLACKWELL! IMPOSSIBLE TEST...IMPOSSIBLE TO LISTEN TO LECTURES YOU WILL FALL ASLEEP...NEEDS TO CUT HIS LONG, RED LOCKS
Very difficult course if you do not study regularly, even if you do attend every lecture. Material requires much studying in order to understand. Also, gives out a lot of hw, which can be difficult and take a while to complete. However, he is a very kind prof that is willing to help you. If you are prepared to study a lot then you can prob. do well
Blackwell is definitely one of the best professors I've had at this school. Super smart guy and is really passionate about teaching and the subject matter. He gives very clear explanations and makes concepts as simple as possible. Has great slideshows and allows time to take notes/ grasp concepts before moving on. Not a blow off class but take it!
Hands down, the best econ professor at the college. He really cares about the subject matter as well as the students.
Take him. Attendance not mandatory but encouraged. Helpful lectures, and even more helpful study materials on the Aplia portal. Provides practice exams & questions. Helpful and doable weekly homework assignments. Drops lowest grades. Very quick and helpful responder over email. Incredibly reasonable. All you gotta do is study for the 3 exams.
I enjoyed this class! You will not pass if you do not read, do the homework and come to class. Attendance isn't mandatory but he covers a lot in class that the book doesn't cover. He also makes his lectures accessible on youtube. He literally gives you everything you need to pass, you just have to apply yourself.
gives you practice tests for exams, multiple, even! had to pay for online access for micro econ class but worth it and necessary. thats where hw and even couple chapters of text book are. buying text is optional. i didn't, but few ch.s i read were helpful. forgiving and lots of chances. grades on exam are easy questions worth 5, medium 3 and hard 2
If you read the textbook and go to class, this class is not bad at all. He also posts practice tests and his powerpoints online, so tests are easy to study for. He lectures every class, so be prepared for that. You learn a lot in this class and its interesting, so I would recommend.
Really cool guy. He goes out of his way to make the class relatable to your lives. He changed his syllabus this semester so that all all exams are online which is easy, except the final isn't online and I feel like we haven't really learned anything. Not the most difficult class but also you just get lectured at and never really know whats going on
He trys to make the lectures relatable to activities and things we do in college, but its still really hard to understand. There are no pluses or minuses. 3 exams were online, but final (40%) is not. the homework is easy if you do it and have the book.
Blackwell is a good guy. He's a genius. All tests are offered two times: online (open note) and then in class the following day. Because of this he does not curve. There usually are online homework assignments weekly. He is the head of the department and really knows his stuff. A solid choice. Very accessible outside of class and via email.
Sign in sheet makes attendance not mandatory. Lectures are confusing but he tries to make it funny. The tests are all online besides the final. Homework assignments are usually easy too.
Very Difficult to learn from this teacher. He gives quizzes twice a week on Oaks. But they are six questions and you can bet 2/6 are trick questions. No you won't get to see any of the answers afterwards either. Just that you got a horrible grade a missed a certain number of questions, not being able to study what you missed. Class average is low.
I had him for ECON 200 and I hated it. I dreaded going to the class. The final exam was 40% of the final grade and the class average was in low D range. He is the chair of Economics and this reflects so poorly on him and the entire economics department. He also has never posted any of the powerpoints from class and gives two online quizzes a week.
Nice guy, cool class. He's good at facilitating discussions and accessible outside class. Take him!
he is a good teacher, lets you know what will be on every exam, he has 2 quizzes a week and there are so many if you miss a couple it will be fine. He drops lowest grades as well, super easy
Econ 200 had a basic format throughout the semester with Quizzes every Monday & Thursday online and here are a total of 3 exams and a final exam that was cumulative. The class is in person but had a zoom in option. Professor Blackwell was a great teacher and the lectures are very important for the exam material and all of his examples were helpful!
This was an online course for summer. There were no recorded lectures at all. It was all reading and watching Khan Academy videos. The papers we had to write were easy but redundant. Grading for the papers were unjustified in my opinion. He provides no feedback for why the grade is that besides just the numerical value.
Hes smart and youll learn something. There are lots of quizzes throughout the semester. He is very lecture heavy, and does appreciate participation. Overall a very good professor.
Absolutely loved this class. Gives Zoom option but prefers you be in class. HW every MR night that should only take 5-15 mins. Gives you ample material and resources to pass. Accessible Office Hours. He is the most organized professor ever. NO LATE WORK. "I Have a Problem" Sheet for issues. Honest man. Doesn't play games so DO NOT CHEAT.
If you want to do well, you just have to put in the effort: GO TO CLASS. Read the textbook. Complete the practice problems!! Doesn't grade with +/- for final grades. Offers a makeup exam which is extremely useful. He's a good professor and has interesting lectures. Microeconomics is hard in general but if you have to take the class, take him.
Dr. Blackwell did an excellent job teaching Game Theory. The workload/study level is average for this class. He clearly cares a lot about the topic and challenges his students just the right amount for an Econ elective. He's a great guy to know and very helpful if a student doesn't understand something.
Microeconomics is hard but Blackwell makes it manageable and if anything he simplifies it to an almost elementary level. Lots of quizzes that aren't hard and 5 exams (one makeup) that are tough but not bad if you study. He doesn't do +/- on grades which seems weird but he's probably as fair a grader as you'll find in the school of business.
Read the textbook thoroughly and do the practice problems. If you don't understand something, ask and he will make sure you understand the concept. As long as you don't fall behind you will be good. I also highly recommend Acing the first exam. If you make an A on Exam 1 it will take a lot of stress off of you for the remainder of the class!
One of the best Professors I have had at Charleston. Lectures are recorded and posted in OAKs at the end of each day in case you missed class or needed to go back and listen again. Two quizzes a week were not easy but helped keep your memory up to date on the material. 10/10 recommend!!!
Easy to follow lectures. He gives great examples and is very regimented with his weekly quizzes. DO NOT MISS A QUIZ, there is no reason to miss it and he will not deviate from this rule. Make some flash cards for definitions, do the quizzes, and practice the math. You will get an A.
Professor Blackwell was pretty good at explaining the course material, but his quizzes were all pass or fail so there was no room for error. There were also no homework assignments to make up for failing a quiz- one mistake and you are stuck with a bad grade. He also might incorrectly report you to the dean for cheating with no explanation.
Professor Blackwell was easily the worst professor I have ever had. Not only did he make it extremely difficult to get in touch with, he also was extremely inconsistent with his grading policies. Through the entirety of this course Blackwell did not treat students fairly whatsoever. DO NOT TAKE THIS COURSE.
This professor is extremely disrespectful of students time and never answers any emails. He is insanely inconsistent with his grading. He had reported many students for cheating when they didn't and falsely accused them and ruined their grade and academic report. He is out to get his students and is very paranoid about cheating.
He was okay. Unclear with grading and exam questions. Definitely not the best professor, kinda surprised he runs the Econ department. If you want a good professor Id recommend Professor Walker.
This class was very challenging and lecture-heavy. The class consisted of three exams; if you did poorly on one it is hard to come back from. He gives you prior exams to study from which seemed to be helpful, but no matter how hard I studied I never did well on the exams.
I did not enjoy his teaching style whatsoever. For example, why did he talk about dominos pizza more than he talked about economics?! The class was very lecture heavy and was graded on three exams and a final with little to no room to bounce back or boost your grade.
Blackwell's class was actually fairly easy and enjoyable but his 40% weight cumulative final makes it really hard to get a good grade. His class is all lectures and he explains topics well and makes class fun. The exams aren't too hard and are based off of the practice problems online but they have a lot of weight in the grade so study a lot
I learned a lot but be prepared to be living in the library or in his office hours to do well in this course. If you haven't taken at least calculus 1 do NOT take this course. There's 3 exams and a final and they are EXTREMELY HARD. He doesn't provided material to practice except study guides (NOT COMPARABLE TO THE EXAM). Wait another semester...
great professor, easy lectures. 3 tests (1 replacement offered) and a final (40%). Seems scary but if you study (not just the day before), go to class, and do the practice questions (there are SO many offered, not required but help a lot) you will do fine. Not bad at all if you put the work in, econ can be hard don't let the reviews scare you!
Theres 3 exams and the final, pretty much the only grades. Quizzes on OAKS take on your own and those are just for extra credit. There is extra credit on each exam! ECON is already hard but he does a great job at explaining and giving study guides (previous exams) and things to work on through OAKS. There is an online text book, but dont have read
Econ by nature is a really dense, dry and frankly boring class and you'd have to be a miracle worker to make it interesting. With that said, Prof Blackwell is lively, brilliant and passionate. However he also understands that some students interest only is in passing. Lecture heavy, but more than fair grading to help you get in and out.
Great prof honestly. Really passionate about his subject. Tests are kind of tricky but he posts previous exams to study from that are very similar. Lectures are engaging.
Professor Blackwell is a great guy and truly loves what he teaches! There are three exams and the final, plus extra credit quizzes. He is lenient on final grades, which is excellent. Econ is so difficult to begin with, so I still struggled, but it was not because of Professor Blackwell. He is a great guy and a good lecturer!
This professor could genuinely care less about your grade. He is very inconsiderate and doesn't care if you succeed or not. This was the only class I was in this semester in which the professor didn't know my name or care to know my name. You are graded by 3 exams and then a final which is 40% of your grade. Very unfair.
He is a nice guy, and the tests are not bad if you study. However, his 40% final is incredibly unfair and can completely wreck your grade in the class. Also, do not expect your concerns to be met with care if you go to his office hours, he will just tell you to look at the practice exams. He does not care about his individual students.
I took this class online. He sent us an introductory email, & requested that we respond to the email. Afterwards, that was the last that we heard from him. We could've had an AI as the instructor & it would've been just as good, because he did not communicate about anything. Just a bunch of videos and readings only for there to be 4 lockdown exams.
Your whole grade is based off of 3 exams and a final. But other than that he is a caring professor who knows what he is talking about and makes it easy to understand.
