The chem 101 lab at UNC is terribly organized. You show up to chem lab, do the experiment as best as you can with incompetent TA's that know the experiment at best on the same level as the student doing it for the first time. The pre and post labs make little to no sense in the directions. If you can skip Chem 101 lab at UNC DO IT!
The UNC CHEM dept. is a lot harder than it should be. Labs aren't bad, unless you have a confusing TA. You have a pre-, post-lab, lab quiz each week. I find myself spending a lot of time doing post-labs yet I dont feel that my grades (very unclear) are a reflection of how much effort I put into them. If you have to take lab, good luck.
you could understand everything in actual Chem 101 lecture and get to chem lab and understand nothing. 90% of the time you won't know what you're doing, the TA won't know what they're doing, and you'll fill out the postlab with complete nonsense and pray for a B. Its just a living nightmare, im sorry if you have to take chem lab at unc.
Chem 101 lab at UNC was a living nightmare. The pre- and post-lab assignments were ridiculously unclear, to the point that if you wanted a decent grade, you had to go to the TA office hours and ask them what they were looking for. Half the time, they didn't know either and had to email Dr. Grant. Spent about 8 hours per week on this one credit lab.
Such a terrible experience. My TA spoke quieter than the class fan, making instructions unintelligible. Prelab & postlabs take a ridiculous amount of work (6-8 hours/week) and ask questions not answered in textbooks. This class is disorganized either out of sheer ignorance or to make it a "weed out class". In comparison BIO101L was preschool.
Quite honestly the worst class I have taken so far. Your entire grade is dictated by pre-labs, post-labs and in-labs. These assignments are tedious easily taking up 8 hours per week and do not truly assess your knowledge. All of the labs are on coursehero but don't use them. They are inaccurate and Dr. Grant checks for plagiarism. Stay Away!!
Dr. Grant is a good person, but this class is RIDICULOUS. I spend 8+ hours on work for a 1 credit hour class. The lab assignments are unclear, which results in bad grades. Im so drained from this class
The professor is nice as far as I know, but the class is unnecessarily hard. You spend up to 8 hours on labs that make zero sense. You'll ask the TA a question and they never know, and if they do know they'll say something like "I can't tell you that". The lab manuals don't help, and sometimes doesn't line up with Chem101. Avoid if you can.
I don't know what went on in this class, I don't even know my final grade yet, and I already took my final exam. I hate this class, nothing makes sense, the TA grades too harshly, and can never answer my questions. When the TA tries to answer my questions, it just leaves me confused. Quizzes are impractical for anyone who work all weekend.
Lab was difficult, no doubt. Expect to spend several hours a week on lab reports. Do NOT wait until the last day to complete your pre-labs and post-labs, you will regret it. The lab reports are very vague and depending on your TA, grading can be harsh. Go into this class with low expectations.
Be prepared to spend 8 hours per week on this 1 credit hour class. Dr. Grant seems like a nice guy, but he recorded all of the lab videos (everything was online for Covid this semester) before the semester started and then went on vacation. He was inaccessible via email, so rampant ambiguity in assignment requirements was a constant.
I think TAs are the real instructor here compared to Dr. Grant. He has annoying BGM for the earlier video and no one can focus because of that. My grade is not bad, but It is not worthy compared to the time I spend every week.
Dr. Grant does not do much for your lab grade, it is all dependent on your TA. Dr. Grant sent a bunch of encouraging announcements on Sakai, but when sent a private email he took days to respond. Lab is hard, especially online, but as long as you go to TA office hours, you will be fine.
Avoid this class at all all costs. I understood almost all of CHEM 101 and this class did not correlate. Pretty much guessing on each lab. If you NEED TO take this lab, ask your TA a bunch of questions. The rubric is crazy, but the syllabus is clear. Only credit I will give is I was impressed by Dr. Grant's dedication to equality.
Do not take this course at UNC take it through a state college. This class will eat your time. The pre-post lab assignments take over 8+ hours to complete. The TAs have not been shown what to do and are just as confused as you are. They on average are not helpful. You can do great in chem 101 and still fail the lab.
Definitely the worst class I've taken as a freshman. Your grade depends on whichever TA you get and how hard they grade as well as how helpful they are. Just pray you get a good one. Dr. grant doesn't do much and the videos are hard to watch as they're really blurry and he moves along fast. Pre-, in-, and post- labs take like 8-9 hours altogether.
LAB IS TERRIBLE. Prof Grant is a cool guy himself but the labs assigned have no solid instructions, forcing the students to bul-ls-hit their way through them. You work 10 hrs a week on pre/in/post lab assignments for the TA's to grade off of the most specific, unnecessary criteria. Truly terrible experience, especially from being all online
Dr. Grant needs a reality Check that his class is only 1 credit. It is graded somewhat unclearly by the TAs and there is no real content to be learned. The entire grade is a bunch of lab reports, around 1 a week. Then there is a final with random chemistry content on it. Labs should not have final exams.
Chem 101 lab is always hard and though this year it wasn't too bad, there is some serious room for improvement. The obscene amount of work in this lab is not the worst part, its the lack of a clear rubric, extremely difficult quizzes and a very confusing final exam. If you go to office hours you can get an A but still, this is a very hard lab.
This class is absolutely horrible. In the online format, the videos are useless. TA's are barely helpful. Dr. Grant doesn't do anything, because he's not involved in our learning. The assignments are hard & time consuming. If you're lucky, you might get a TA that grades leniently, but overall the assignments are graded so harshly. Do not recommend.
This class was the worst class I have ever taken, especially because the online format this year meant we didn't get to do the actual labs. The lab videos were unclear but we were expected to know exactly what was going on. Pre-lab and post-lab questions mostly required guessing so I learned absolutely nothing.
There's a prelab, in lab, and post lab due before your lab time which can take around 8-10 hours a week. Your grade is solely dependent on the TA who can either be super nice or harsh about grading. I highly recommend going to TA hours even if you're just slightly unsure about a question since the grading rubric is extremely disorganized.
As soon as my lab period ended, I dreaded starting the assignments and having to repeat a week later. CHEM 101L is supposed to teach you the fundamentals of labs but I can genuinely say I learned nothing besides the difference between precision and accuracy. Because of this truly terrible experience, I find myself anxious to take CHEM 102L :(
Not that you really have a choice if premed, but it was way more work than its worth for a 1 credit class. The only class I had to use P/F, the only class Ive ever had late work, it was bad. I feel for his overworked TAs
Dr. Grant doesn't teach anything, it's all done through the TAs and he made the lab videos to watch during class. The pre and post labs took me 8 hours a week to do because they were unnecessarily long and confusing. This class is a disorganized mess and the TAs are just as lost as you are. Good luck kiddos, you're gonna need it.
At this point you've read all the other reviews and are freaking out because you have to take this class and there's no way around it. Pls take this advice (COVID online lab edition) -Start postlab AT LEAST 3 -4 days before it's actually due. -watch the lab videos and take notes BEFORE class -learn excel before starting the class- just trust me
I know the lab is supposed to be hard, but this was downright miserable. The online class ended up being around 9 hours of HW every week for a course that is only 1 credit hour. The videos were hard to see, so most of the long 2.5 hr class was spent debating what the data results were and stressing about tough grades rather than learning.
Youre screwed mate. START POST LABS EARLY. YOU WONT FINISH IN A DAY. dont lie to yourself. If you really buckle down and get all the work done youll probably do fine. Its just so much work for so little credit it hardly feels worth it. If you are struggling with pandemic burnout this class will kill you
Dr. Grant literally does nothing. He made the hard-to-see videos in Fall 2020 and has done nothing since. There is no teaching in the class and you are expected to figure out how to do everything on your own. How much work is required for a 1 credit-hour course is ridiculous. All the work just feels like busy work and you learn nothing.
Dr Grant does nothing... the TA's do everything. All Grant does are the videos which are super low quality and not helpful whatsoever. The final in this class is ridiculous and nothing we learned in class.
Course was designed poorly online. However, the point system has areas to boost your score. Just do the work and be thorough in you lab assignments. I actually never interacted with Professor Grant. The final was an absolute disaster though. Nothing expected and extremely hard compared to everything we did. I think they should've curved it.
Did not interact with Dr. Grant, lab periods were spent watching low-quality videos w/ TA. Videos posted online so zoom was pointless other than asking questions. Spent hours&hours each week on lab assignments. It's possible to get a good grade but it was overall a painful experience for 1 credit hour. Changed my major after to avoid more unc chem.
Lab ruined my week every week. The workload is insane and difficult to balance with the workload from other courses. First time I had to repeatedly turn in assignments late for a course. The TAs are angels and are very helpful but only to a certain extent. Awful class to take during the pandemic, I'm considering changing my major.
Chem101L is a weed out class. I am telling you this now. Weed out classes suck in general thats true wherever you go. This class is a lot of work like an excessive amount, but its doable if you are organized. If youre unprepared youll do bad. The v best thing you can do: FIND SOMEONE WHO HAS TAKEN THE CLASS. Theyll be more help than any TA. Gl
Just dont to be honest I lost a lot of respect for UNC after taking this class. No university of this caliber should have such an outdated and impossible intro class like this worth 1 credit hour. Shame.
Horrible. Do not take chem lab unless you have to. Lab reports take 10+ hours a week and if you have a bad TA, it will be very hard to do well. Way too hard for an entry level class. The videos Professor Grant made were hard to follow and very bad quality. If you are enrolled in chem lab... good luck, you'll need it!!
He does not teach anything. He only uses TA's that dont know what they are doing. You are left by yourself in a ditch to figure this out. Each TA tells you something different, so you dont know what you are doing. Anyways dont take this class
rating:0 You are not taught by the actual professor, you're taught by the teacher assistant typically they are quite lost themselves. You are left to figure everything out yourself even during the lab. This is very time consuming and not time efficient, I have had to go to 7 TA's just for one post lab, i will never take this course again. good luck
The angels of heaven will surely give up their wings for Calvin Grant's ridiculous 15-page lab reports (pre,in,post lab)each week that requires 10 hours while he is madly in love with his favorite software MS excel.
Honestly the worst professor. You know it's bad when you can count on one hand the number of times that you've actually seen him during the class period. Entirely taught by TAs and they are not always the most competent. They want to be there about as much as we do. Lots of work to complete assignments and the quizzes are over info we never learn.
I feel like the reviews that are written against Dr. Grant are too harsh. The lab itself is NOT taught by Grant; rather, it's taught by Graduate TAs. I had the chance of interacting with Dr. Grant and he's helpful and funny. His actions throughout semester showed his care. The lab is difficult, but throughly do assignments and you'll do good.
For a 1 credit hour class, this class has more homework than a 3hour class. The grading criteria is pretty much non-existent and the TAs are always confused. Not recommended.
Dr. Grant is a really great, funny person outside of the lab. He is good at keeping students informed and making his expectations clear. But, he is one of those professors that wants to catch someone cheating or breaking some rule. I know he needs to keep students safe and honest, I just think he goes out of his way to look for the bad in people.
In emails he sounds like the nicest person ever, but you really only interact with him once or twice throughout the entire semester. The length of the lab assignments are horrendous making the time commitment for this class sometimes unmanageable (and it's only 1 credit...). The grading is too harsh, and the final exam questions are so random.
This lab is the worst class I've ever taken. You don't interact much with Dr. Grant, but my TA wasn't helpful and didn't seem to know much. There is no feedback, and by the time you do start to get grades, half the semester is over. Often the points they deduct have nothing to do with the content at all. It seems like they want you to fail.
The lab is taught and graded by TAs, but the lab assignments he makes are ridiculous. I have no clue how I made a B+ in the class, half the time I never understood what was going on. One time I was very deathly sick and he told me I needed to come in or I'd get zeroes on the assignments with no chance of make-up.
Dr. Grant seems like a nice person in his emails, but other than that, he doesnt interact with you at all during the semester. Your grade is entirely dependent on your TA, so pray you get an easier grader. For a one hour class, you will spend so much time working on post and pre labs. Had to put a lot of time and effort in to get an A
I only occasionally interacted with him but he seemed like a really nice, funny, and normal guy. Unfortunately, CHEM101L is just terrible in general, so beware. Quizzes were ridiculous, unrelated to the assignments, and not given enough time. Final was the same. You have to try on the post labs, they're the most significant part of your grade
I would have had an A if this class if it weren't for the final. The pre and post labs are manageable if you space them out accordingly, but the lab quizzes and lab final have ridiculous questions that we are never taught how to do and just expected to know. There was a slight curve on it but nothing actually helpful. The grading depends on your TA
First, the class is primarily ran by TAs. How you do in the class can depend on your TA. I ended the course off with a B. For a 1 credit hour class, the outside work can take hours and hours to complete, so be prepared for a heavy course load. The labs also tend to fall inconsistent with whats going on in the chem lecture.
The weekly quizzes were pointless and the assignments were unnecessarily difficult. The labs did not match up with the lecture and it really depended on how your TA was grading your assignments. I hated the class and it took way longer to complete assignments than proposed. Would not recommend at all.
If you have to take this, make sure you are prepared. If you don't have to take this, run, run for the hills.
As others have said, the course is pretty much only run by TAs so I don't have much to say about Prof Grant personally. However, this class consumed more of my time than any other course despite it being for only 1 credit hour. Highly recommend not taking a Monday lab unless you want your entire weekend to be consumed with pre and post labs.
Take this lab later in the week or you wont make it though. The workload is INSANE at best. Literally so pointless for a one credit class. Pray you get a good TA who is willing to help you out, they are just as confused as the students. The lab quizzes are hard, the pre lab and post labs are also hard. Just prepare yourself mentally. Good luck
Course was extremely extensive in the amount of work which was loaded upon us each week. Often the work felt too much to handle and to receive a decent grade you would have to set aside hours. However the course is dependent on the TA you receive not of Professor Grant. Ultimately I had a TA who was a fair grader and offered to help when needed.
I have a lot of feelings towards this class. We don't interact with Dr. Grant at all. It's the TA's that you are dealing with, and it matters if you get a good one. The average grade was low. I'm pretty sure I scraped by with a 79.9%. I worked 10 hours a week at least to get work done. It's insane that a 101 Lab is a weed out course.
There is ZERO nice thing I can say about this class, the worst waste of my time by far. The only reason I got an A is because my TA was an Absolute saint! Pray that you will get a good TA. Pray that Calvin Grant retire soon
AWFUL experience in chem lab. He messed up my section's final exam and could not tell us how he would fix it until a week later. His instructions are not very specific and he sends out reminders RIGHT before Monday labs, so if you have a Monday lab, beware. Other than that, the experience is all based on how good your TA is.
Please don't take CHEM 101L if you don't have to. Dr. Grant is a horrible professor who has no interest in doing his job, and doesn't make things easier for his overworked TAs. The instructions on everything are ambiguous, and the only reason I did well is because my TA was a very lenient grader, so pray you get the same thing.
Chem Lab is terrible. There is an excessive amount of work for one credit hour. If you have credit for this class, do not even think about retaking it. Dr. Grant seems very nice, but that does not matter since the TA's do the teaching and grading. I do not think a different professor would change this awful experience.
Honestly, Prof. Grant's rating doesn't really matter because I maybe saw him twice all semester. The difficulty of your lab really depends on your TA, and I was lucky to get one that wasn't super harsh. However, the amount of workload for this class is INSANE, so good luck. Literally hours of work, so DO NOT procrastinate and get started early!!
From the one time I saw him, Dr. Grant was actually a pretty funny guy. However, the whole lab being led by the TAs means that it can be very hit or miss. Lab content is vaguely related to lecture, and the lab manual is super wordy and hard to understand. The only reason I did ok was because my TA was incredible shoutout Kim Taylor!
It's an insanely difficult class. It was so bad that it made me switch majors. As everyone else is saying, pray that you get a good TA, because that's what your experience in the class mainly depends on. My TA was, unfortunately, extremely irresponsible and a strict grader.
This lab was by far the hardest class I took this semester. While the class was almost 3 hours long, I only got 1 credit hour from it. Additionally, there was about 3-4 hours of outside work doing pre- and post-labs. If it weren't for TA office hours, I would not have passed this class. The assignments were long and confusing at best.
I maybe saw Grant a total of 4 times. Your TA oversees labs and initial grading. Some TAs are easier graders than others. Just go ahead and plan to work on this class as if it were a 3 credit class (9+ hrs/week) give or take. It is what it is. Although it takes much more work than a 1 credit should, overall not that hard. The final exam is easy.
Dr. Grant tried his best with this summer course, but it was super difficult. The lectures were unorganized, the practice tests looked nothing like the actual exams (which were often too long to be completed in time), and while he knows a lot about chemistry, he wasn't good at explaining it to newcomers. If you take this section, get a tutor!
Dr. Grant is a great person but his Summer lecture was terrible. Taking Chemistry over a summer session is already difficult, but it was made worse by his teaching practices. We would often not be able to finish going over material by the end of each class and exams would be too long to finish in time. Lecture and recitation was very disorganized.
I had a great TA, however Calvin Grant is the one who provides the assignments which are terrible. They make absolutely no sense and are generally more complicated than what you learn at the 101 level. He also is hard to communicate with and doesn't seem to care about the students. This lab really depends on how merciful your TA is.
This class is solely based on your TA since they grade you. My TA graded really harshly at the beginning and then he found out other TAs were just giving out free 100s and started grading easier. Experiments are boring, post-labs don't make sense and you're never taught how to properly complete one, and the pre-labs are simply just wrong sometimes.
Your CHEM 101L instructor is whatever TA you are assigned. They grade your assignments and conduct all labs, Dr. Grant just pops in from time to time to make sure you're wearing PPE. He's a really cool guy and enthusiastic about chemistry, but don't expect to see or interact with him much for 101L.
Grant is an awesome guy and really helped our class who didn't have the best TA. He is very patient and wants students to succeed. When something doesn't work out at first he goes back to make sure students understand. He was a great communicator through emails about the labs. Grant was great!
Dr. Grant was awesome. He clearly really cared about his students. Lab can be tough. Make sure to utilize office hours and actually read the pre lab.
Your grade and experience with this course basically depends on which TA you get. Mine was really nice but still was a pretty tough grader. Hours of work on top of the 3 hour lab for only a 1 credit class. They switched my section so I went with the wrong TA on the first day - then they dropped me from the class because I "wasn't there."
I had a good TA for this class, so I was able to do well. However, that is not always the case. The format of the class and the strict rubric for the assignments are frustrating. Grant seems like a nice guy but does not really want to be contacted by his students unless as a last resort. A ridiculous amount of work for a 1-credit class
Professor Grant displayed the material for CHEM101L clearly.
The labs themselves aren't always bad. The post labs are ALWAYS bad. Ridiculously long and hard. Dr. Grant doesn't actually teach the labs. DO NOT, I REPEAT, DO NOT wait until 12 hours before the post lab is due to start it. start it IMMEDIATELY after the lab PLEASE!! final exam wasn't bad.
I have never seen nor spoken to Dr. Grant, and the one email I sent him went unanswered. The class is taught exclusively by TAs, most of whom are just as confused as the students about his confusing, contradictory, and unacceptably verbose curriculum and policies. The workload is manageable, but very excessive. I expected far more from Duke.
Grant gives a significant amount of work that far exceeds the amount necessary for an intro chemistry class. Extremely inflexible about deadlines and quite passive aggressive over emails. Come into his lab expecting to put hours into trying to understand his vague instructions and deadlines.
Sets absurd deadlines for pre-labs on the asynch weeks by making them due same time as lab report from previous week when we should have a week till next in-person lab to do pre-labs. CHECK DEADLINES ALWAYS! Labs led and graded by TAs overall TAs are great and have office hours to help. labflow questions set by Calvin and even TAs get confused
Calvin Grant is TERRIBLE!! Dr. Grant does NOT respond to emails, is passive aggressive, and makes the grade that is supposed to help you, a hardship. He is the hardest person to work with and I would never recommend to anyone. He does not care about his students. DO NOT TAKE!!!!
Gosh. DO NOT TAKE ANYTHING WITH CALVIN GRANT!! He expects so much for his lab that he himself does not grade. The TA's grade and conduct the labs. Dr. Grant does not respond to emails, nor does he help. His due dates for assignments are NOT set out and if you miss something, oh well. It is so absurd and unnecessary. The lab grade is supposed to hel
I WOULD NEVER RECOMMEND DR.GRANT TO ANYONE!! NOT EVEN MY WORST NEMESIS. He is the worst professor I have ever encountered. He is not considerate let alone caring for his students. The TAs do all the work and your grade basically lies in their hands. Dr. Grant does not respond to emails and is so inconsiderate.
Pros: - Class once a week (it is a lab) - Pre-lab quizzes could be retaken an infinite amount of times - My TA was an absolute legend... shoutout Rebecca Powers :) Cons: - Grading is overly harsh - Post labs would take hours to days to complete - TAs were the only caring people in the dept - Final was unfair - Most tedious 1 credit course ever
You will never see Calvin Grant. Grading is based strictly on how nice your TA is. The labs are bi-weekly, take 3 hrs, and about 8-12 hrs outside of class to finish the lab report.
Permission not GRANTed
Be happy the ta's run everything. If I had to see him for lab every other week, it would dampen my whole week. Just wait and you'll understand since he is the only 101L prof. He is rather rude. Lab: theres a lot of discrepancies in grading and I got random points off on things other people got full credit for. It is pretty work heavy.
