His class is definitely very difficult, however he is an excellent professor and will likely inspire at least a slight interest in the field of economics (which is quite a monumental accomplishment if you think about it).
yeah, the class was intense for most. hoy certainly isn't the easiest. stay on top of your game in his macroeconomics and microeconomics class, otherwise you'll finish with a C, or possibly lower.
He is the hardest teacher in the school for anythin he teaches. He is a pretty nice guy and willing to help you. He teaches at a very fast pace and you must keep up with the work, otherwise you will not pass.Dont take this teacher unless your hardworking!!

Prof. Hoy is a great professor. Yes, he may be a little fast paced but he explains everything very clearly. If you have questions, he is very helpful. He teaches from not only the suggested book you buy for his class, but from many.
He is fast paced and doesn't like to be interupted. His reviews are vague and he definitely talks down to people at times.
Took him for Economics 1, very difficult, and tests are extremely hard, doesnt give good reviews.
very educated on economics! if you pay attention you can learn a lot!!! His tests are ok, if you study the notes and memorize all the definitions you'll be fine. Dont take his class if you are lazy. Plus side: NO HOMEWORK!!! and only 4 exams which he drops your lowest grade
He's not a bad teacher, you just really need to pay attention and study hard, he knows what he is talking about, but if you are not interested in Economics then you wont do well.
He is a very hard teacher for economics. I ended up with a D in the class for the semester. However he will take time to listen to your questions, but I still would not recommend him to another student.
Looked forward to Econ before taking him. Absolutely ruined it for me. First semester 3.8 GPA second semester 4 A's and an F in Hoy's class. By far worst teacher I have ever had. Rambles on and on, goes over the time limit, does not give examples, and never reviews for tests. DO NOT TAKE HIM. ABSOLUTELY HORRIBLE
He definitely knows economics but just doesn't know how to teach it. He is constantly moving his hands which is such a distraction. His tests are very hard and he doesn't tell you what is on them. You are expected to know everything. The one good thing is he drops the lowest test grade out of 4. You must study for his tests! Would not recommend him
My favorite teacher so far. He is very interesting and a very good teacher that is clear and will help you if you need extra help.
I had professor Hoy for Macro and I really enjoyed the class and economic theory so I took him for Micro also. I got A's in both and he was always helpful. I think he's excellent. His tests are indeed a challenge so if you don't plan on studying and homework, or expect an easy class, then don't take economics at all, it can be a rigorous subject.
he knows what he is teaching. as long you attend class and understand the course, you will do fine. in a 3 hour class, i havent fell asleep yet.
Great teaching method, knows his stuff inside and out!! Keep good notes and you don't even need the book! Tests are easy and he really knows what is going on. Master of explaination!!!!!!
NO WAY...NEVER AGAIN...WORST CLASS
Dont take Hoy, He is prob. the hardest professor Ive ever haddddd! Believe me..take my advice
The worst teacher ever. Exams are impossible. Do not take Hoy ever.
Dr. Hoy is on my top 5 best teachers list. His ratings are mixed, but so are the kids that take his class. If you go into this treating it like some junk social science class, You will hate the teacher and do poorly. However, if you pay attention in class and do his assigned readings you will appreciate him, his knowledge and his methods.
Very boring, Very dificult to understand and listen to this Prof. Would avoid at all costs.
Very hard and boring! Gives you the feeling of hearing the same things over and over again!
he was a good teacher...the only thing is u need to stay awake during his classes
I took him for MacroEco and I will wait till the semester he teachs MicroEco. It is a hard class but the my hints are *do not miss any of the lectures*, take notes and smtg that really helped me out was to login into the book`s website and do the quizzes. Good Luck!
I had a Horrible experience with this professor. He didn't seem to offer any help at all. And he actually yelled at a few kids for asking a question. I would suggest not to take his class.
Good teacher, indeed very hard, but if you take notes and do your homeworks, you will do well. if you want to take him during the Summer, do not take any other classes! A lottttt of work.
i've never had such a hard time in any of my classes. i study for the tests and still barely passed. i have no sort of advice to offer besides avoid at all costs.
horrible. the only world useable to describe this man, his teaching style, his personailty, and his attitude towards students. avoid at all costs if possible
I had professor Hoy for Principles of Accounting. I really don't care what any of you think...he's a great professor. If you study for every test and pay attention/take good notes & do all the homework, you will be fine. He is a hard professor and if you come in and blow it off, your going to fail. I got a B in his class. Do ALL the homework!!!
i got a A, but it took so much from me to get this "A".so for anyone else in the future..... no easy A from him. work hard and work harder. good luck. about his attitude, just remember, u are paying to learn not to be his friend.
knows his stuff but horrible teacher. gives NO review of any sort. 4 tests which r very very hard. has no personality and very boring. talks wit his hands a lot stares at people. doesnt write stuff on the board other then abbreviations which gets very annoying. stay away.
If you are looking for an easy A, he's not going to breast feed you. If you want to learn the material from a man who knows his stuff, he's for you. Don't be lazy. Go to class, read the book, and do the homework!! If you are serious about going into business, you should take his class.
I took Hoy for MacroEcon and Accounting back to back. This was definitely the easier class, but don't slack off. If you don't show up and do the work, you won't learn the concepts. I used to be a lazy student, and taking 2 classes with him forced me learn how to be serious and work hard. Given the opportunity, I would take him again.
awful.....just awful
Probably the worst teacher that I ever had. Got very upset when you asked questions. Believe there were 28 kids to start the class. When the class was over there were 8 kids and those that were left half of them didn't approve of him. DON'T TAKE HIM!
easily the WORST professor i have ever had! he is extremely fast-paced and assumes you know terminology to the point where he sounds like hes reading from an encyclopedia. he's absolutely the most boring, dry, under stimulating professor ever.
Professor Hoy is god awful. He refuses to give clear answers to questions and assumes everybody understands everything. He really doesnt know how to teach or handle a class. Half our class withdrew by the end of the semester. STAY AWAY
worst teacher ever.started to work on info for the second exam before we took the first exam.very hard teacher.willing to help during his office hours only.if you do not understand something in class,he will answer, but he will make you look like an idiot.does not follow the book.says study chapter 12.and adds stuff in from chap 8.horrible teacher
worst teacher ever.everything you read in other comments is true. it is not just people failing and writing angry.just learned of this site.and omg.the last comment is one im going through right now.would not recommend him to anyone.avoid avoid avoid
If you can keep up with him you will understand the material. He does everything in outlines and is very organized. His tests however are pretty hard
Regarding the negative comments of this professor, i could not have said it better myself. The man simply has no interpersonal skills whatsoever.
This teacher is the worst professor I've ever had. I'm taking the class again and doing fine. He doesn't explain concepts and gets mad if you ask questions and then doesn't answer them. He knows what he's talking about but doesn't know how to help you understand it. Avoid unless you want to fail.
He's a nice professor but goes very fast, and not that understandable. Gets annoyed sometimes at questions too. If you are not the study type avoid this teacher. He requires a lot of work, don't kid yourself if you are not the type.
worst teacher i've ever had. you cant ask question or he gets mad and he does not teach the topic good at all. never gives you a test review or a study guide, he is totally useless. never take him.
This HORRIBLE professor doesnt know how to teach for his life. I took act 111 with him, and failed miserably because of his impossible tests, but Im retaking it with another professor and its like night and day.Hoy's first exam I got an F, with a different professor, I got a 100.Even though its essentially the SAME material, the professor matters.
I found him to be a fair and straight forward professor. Just look through your notes for a few days proceeding a test, try to understand the logic behind the concepts and pay attention in class. It's not hard.
BEWARE!
My rate doesn't reflect how much I learned in this class. Not going to lie, I do catch on quickly. The best thing about Hoy's class is that his notes are SOOOO good. If you don't understand the material, he's kinda useless, but if you catch on to the material, his notes given in class are like the Rosetta Stone
Very smart guy, but not a great teacher. Must take notes in class because he does not follow the book closely. However somewhat difficult, if you takes notes and study, and A is very possible.
DONT TAKE THIS GUY AWFULLLLL>>>!!
He doesn't follow the book. He gives homework but doesn't really go over it and it doesn't count towards your grade. Pretty much everyone but a small number failed the class. He bases the grade solely on tests. If you had him for ECO211 I guess this class would be easy for you... if not, TAKE IT WITH SOMEONE ELSE. I learned the hard way...
I would like to say he knows his material well but has a very hard time explaining it to students. Take him if you are sure you want to be an economist. Otherwise else do not take him.KNows his field extremely well but can not teach it.
He pretty much is the next big thing with economics
I was very satisfied with the performance of this class. Excellent professor.
Hoy was tough but knows what he's talking about. It seems to me a lot of students don't want to have to study at all outside of class and still expect A's. If you actually want to learn something and earn a decent grade you're going to have to study. I can only recommend Hoy to those who care to learn.
One of the worst professors I have ever experienced. He is a very smart man but does not have the social skills to teach college students. He is not helpful at all and gets mad when students ask him questions. If possible do not take his class
Took his class in summer "needed it to graduate" now now graduating on time! WASTE OF TIME! I went to every class, took great notes and studied. His test which is your only grade is SO HARD! He seems extremely smart but cant teach. By the way I recieved a A in ECO 1. Does not make sense!
The guy def. knows what hes talking about. HOWEVER, he has no social skills and makes it almost impossible to learn. He is so bland and you will have ZERO fun in his class. He goes by everything from the book. If your a business major, i highly suggest picking a different professor, to save your time and money. 18/23 students failed our eco. class
(Micro/macro)By no means am I someone to back out of a class because the professor is tough. But there's a difference between tough and unqualified. Moves very fast through difficult subject matter, and can only explain things in one way. Gets mad when you ask questions. Never uses the books, don't buy them. Extremely smart guy, just a bad teacher.
Try to avoid this class. He's not very helpful and the class is very difficult. I typically do very well in almost all classes and this was a struggle. Would not recommend at all.
he doesnt use the textbook at all. His lectures are filled with outdated material. he doesnt clarify what he is talking about. Please beware of what u r getting urself into, kaifa is the better option even if classes are closed, take econ in summer or next fall without HOY. He is not a quality professor. He doesnt show care/passion
He is a smart guy but doesn't know how to convey his knowledge onto others. Rushes through topics and hates questions. Stay away!
I took Eco 1 with him. At first I liked him a lot but I realized as the tests got harder that he wasn't making the material very clear at all. once we were passed the first test I learned much more from the book than him
Had him for Econ 1 and now 2. HE IS HARD, but this is because HE EXPECTS YOU TO WORK. His in class lectures cover everything and if you take the time study and can understand the material you actually will do fine, if you have a hard time with the material though, don't bother. Drops lowest test grade. You will LEARN in this class and he WILL help.
Absolutely brilliant guy, just takes a bit of work on the student's part to understand and do well in the class. WORK IS DEFINITELY REQUIRED! This isn't a professor that you can mess around in class and still get A's with... Moderate textbook use, mostly just for tests.
You will fail unless you are a business major and have previous experience.
He is definitely not an easy professor but he is more than excellent. His class was the first C i had since I started studying at CCM but I realized that everything depends on the effort you put to it. If you study the material consistently, you will be fine.
Great professor, very clear explanations but also very no nonsense. His test are extremely difficult (the hardest in any class I've had thus far) but he is meticulous in making sure he's covered the material prior. This is not an easy A class but if the field of Economics interests you, you WILL learn a lot from the man.
took him for a summer class and failed it and now i am taking him again this semester online and it is horrible. He isnt helpful and expects you to do everything. I DO NOT RECOMMEND AT ALL AVOID AT ALL COSTS
HE WAS THE WORST TEACHER I HAVE EVER HAD! I took him in the summer and ended up having to drop the class because he only game 2 tests and I failed the first test and he never gave any homework to help us. DO NOT TAKE HIM!!!
Dr. Calvin Hoy is extremely intelligent and he's a really nice guy. But if you're not interested in economics, I don't recommend you take him. He pushes through content fairly quickly and his exams are next to impossible.
Professor Hoy is a brilliant economic professor. His didactic lectures are somewhat complicated but very useful in note-taking. He provides some background knowledge and anecdotes in order to connect with students, and once in a while, if you're lucky, he'll crack a condescending joke that, knowing his character, would make anyone laugh.
WORST PROFESSOR. I don't care if you love Econ or hate it. Tests are impossible and he is no help when you go and see him. All homework was Pearson but yet nothing on the homework was on his midterm and final ? Which are the only two tests I had. They seem like they were created 20 years ago
Do yourself a favor and DO NOT TAKE HIM. Especially online class. You do Pearson homework only (nothing like it on the test). The test was created probably when my grandma was born. No help, no explanation. He uploaded youtube videos in myeconlab. You will find better ones on your own. DO NOT TAKE! YOU ARE NOT AT COLLEGE TO FAIL AND WASTE TIME!!!
I took professor Hoy for Economics I and I feel like I've learned a lot from this man. Sure his tests are hard, but if you really want to learn about Economics, he's the professor to take. He's super intelligent, and gets straight to the point. He uses ever minute of class to teach.
Not the best teacher, but he really knows economics. Tests are very hard and there are no other grades.
Horrible. Makes you feel dumb for asking questions and won't answer them, doesn't give extra credit, and is very difficult to understand what is expected of you to learn or know. He teaches things that don't pertain to the exam and expects you to be able to make the distinction between what you should know for the exam you are preparing for and the
I took Economics I Macroeconomics in an online class monitored by Professor Hoy. This was without a doubt my most difficult class of the semester. The online homework assignments were nothing like the tests that he administered so you really need to study the textbook in order to get a good grade. It will be hard, but it is possible.
He yells at students. Test are almost impossible to pass. I would never take him even if i had too
Moves very quickly through lots of material. He uses graphs that are essentially the same ones over and over but with minor differences, so they are difficult to tell apart. The tests are next to impossible because it's hard to tell what exactly you're expected to know. Would not recommend taking him. One plus is that the textbook is not necessary.
Took this class at ccm over the summer opposed to my university figuring it would be so bad, but I was WRONG. Exams were terribly hard and even though I had completed every homework assignment, I still couldn't pass his tests. Horribly boring class, really nice man, but definitely not worth the worry and suffer.
This is the best professor at CCM.
By nature I'm a very studious student. I'll read chapters outside of class & spend time on material I don't understand. But this class, the material was a little more comprehensive, but he just made it a lot harder to grasp & understand on tests. He's a good guy, and knows the material. Be ready to teach yourself, he's vague when it comes to tests.
U either hate him or love him. I personally really enjoyed his teaching styles. Im not the best note taker but he makes it simple by putting exactly what u need on the board. He is very thorough and reviews concepts lots of times before moving on ensuring everything makes sense. tests r based on notes from board so if u copy down everything ur good
Had Hoy for Economics 2. He waited till after the drop date to give the second test, meaning if you failed you cant drop out. Only 2 kids were passing the class and when asked questions he would get annoyed or act like we should already know it. The whole class went to school board to complain. Now Im staying an extra semester to retake one class
If youre not actually interested in Econ and are just taking for requirements, youll be better off taking someone else. Dr Hoys very well educated, extremely smart, and goes through a lot of concepts pretty quickly. An older friend took him before studying econ at a 4year and said Dr Hoys class was actually harder. Take him if youre serious.
Dr Hoy has the strange belief that student come to class because they want to learn. Dr Hoy May be the greatest Professor I have ever had; I just think he may have been better suited for actual Harvard - not Harvard on the hill.
He is clearly knowledgeable about economics but fails to convey the information to students in a way we can understand. He fits an insane amount of content into one lecture-- too much for a person to absorb. Tests are very difficult, and that's all you're graded on. I'm an honors student-- I never had this much trouble with a course. Steer clear!
I took Professor Hoy online for Econmics II in the Spring time and he was absolutely amazing! He would send email reminders regarding when homework and tests would open and close. He replies to emails very quickly so he is reliable when it comes to needing a question to be answered. You will not regret taking his class!
I took IB Higher Level Econs in HS and I still struggled. It was online and he does not record his lectures. He is very knowledgeable on econs but can't explain it in simple ways to make it easy to understand. The grade is based on 3 tests that are EXTREMELY confusing. He also refuses to show you your results so you dont know what you got wrong
Professor Hoy is a nice guy. However he shows very little graphics and only speaks in a way that him himself only understands. In class he shows no visuals and overall it is very difficult to understand what he is trying to teach. The tests are worded very difficultly. He definitely knows what he is talking about. I was so lost the whole time.
This professor only assigns exams so you have to do well on the exams to achieve a good grade. I enjoyed this class this semester and would take it again. He is a fun, great, outgoing person that always brightened up my day.
I did not get econ but I took prof. Hoy and he saved my life! All the notes and reading the materials makes a lot of sense and way easier to understand the subject. Since it was all remote it was pretty easy to do and a lot of time was given. Just do the homework and you should be fine! It was a bit hard to know what chapters were on the tests tho.
This is my 3rd semester at CCM, and this is my first time writing a review to a professor. I'm a pretty average student. I had to take this course because it was mandatory. You only have 3 exams, he gives like one hw every month that doesn't count as a grade, don't buy the book you would never use it. Listen to the other comments, take it online.
By far one of the best classes I've taken. Professor Hoy is probably one of the most knowledgeable people I've come across and I have learned so much from his lectures. In order to pass the exams, you have to study. DONT BUY THE TEXTBOOK. The best resources for test prep are the Jacob Clifford, reviewecon. com, and Khan Academy
This is a do it yourself class. If you wish to succeed you must rewatch lecture videos, record the class, or ask to have a one on one and basically have him reteach you the lessons. If you are a student that studies economics, then this is your class. 3 exams non-cumulative.
Nice professor but his teaching style is more of a conversation. I don’t recommend for students who struggle with test taking he only grades tests and attendance.
Professor Hoy is an insanely intelligent man. However, he teaches in a way he understands and that makes it difficult for the students. The notes that are given are packets full of "exhibits" on which he explains them. If you are not 100% focussed, you will miss a lot. With that said, the grade is based off of three exams, which is stressful.
Professor Hoy is very passionate about economics. The course is based upon lectures and if you don't pay attention you won't do well. I took notes all throughout the course and answered all his questions and ended up with a C+ He also cares deeply for his students, but has inconvenient office hours. Great professor to take if you enjoy economics
he is very passionate about economics, If you are not an economics major you will have a difficult time following, overloaded lectures, large packets, if you do not pay attention you will miss important information, hw is not mandatory, only 3 graded exams the entire semester, fails to explain economics in a way other people can understand.
There is no need to take this professor when there are better ones available. He overloads the class with an excess of information and put no effort into simplifying it for you. When you ask questions, he will leave you with more confusing answers. He does not teach. He simply vaguely gives you the information and sends you off.
The school is setting up students to have lower GPAs by allowing this professor to continue teaching.
The entire course grade is in only 3 exams. If you fail one, you're done
The guy knows a lot but tends to ramble and go on for a while. Your whole grade is 3 tests and many ppl tend to drop. Even if you do pay attention in that class you wont do well. highest grade I've heard abt was eighty something but most range from like 70-60 to failing pretty bad.
He thinks everyone in the room understands, but everyone always sits there in silence. If I were already an economist I would understand what he is talking about otherwise I have not a single clue what is going on in his class. I figure doing work for other classes is more beneficial in his class than following him in the notes.
Professor Hoy is very knowledgeable and his class is all lectures. I wish we had done more practice problems or reviews before the 3 tests that solely determine your grade. It is essential to take notes and review them daily to succeed. He is a friendly professor as long as you pay attention in class.
3 tests the whole semester, and those are the only grades you receive. Lectures are very boring. Wish he gave homework so if you failed a test, you would not fail the whole course. Do not take him. Take the class online if you can.
Prepare for this professor to talk. a lot. There are no projects and few homework assignments are given. He doesn't grade the homework. Your only grades would be the three exams. He teaches the class like you have previous knowledge of economics, so watch out. Overall, wasn't terrible. But I took economics in high school so it helped me for sure.
Prepare to be engaged in Professor Hoy's lectures, as he is very passionate about economics. The class is heavily exam-focused, so diligent note-taking and daily review are essential. I found unstuck study and other online resources like Khan Academy really helpful for test prep.
Bro teaches jack about macroeconomics. I learned more in 1 class of AP macro in high school than I have the whole semester in his class. Only grades are exams, and there are no homework or class assignments. Teaches absolute bull. Do not take it if you want to learn macro. It is probably on tenure as well.
Avoid if possible.
Only 3 grades the whole semester, if u r bad at test taking don't take him. If you have the attention span to listen to his lectures, you'll love it, if not don't take this. Barely any work if you pay attention in class. Very nice guy, although I did feel like he didn't really care for his students, he just seemed happy to talk about economics.
First of all he is a good person but NOT a good professor. He's very nice and he loves to talk but bro will NOT answer your question and clear your misunderstanding with the subject. With every question I asked him, he left me even more confused. He does not really care for his students. I like studying but THERE IS NOTHING TO STUDY.
Good person, BAD professor. He is very sweet and loves to talk about economic. The problem is that there is no study guide for tests. The only thing you can study from is the packets he gives us which is okay but if you have a misunderstanding, it is not getting cleared. With every question I asked him, I somehow managed to be even more confused.
