Learned a lot, but test were crazy hard!!! Made watching discovery channel easier. I would take another class with him.

I had him for oceaography and my friend had him for geology. we both liked him, very friend and did a good job on getting the class a cross. YES!! his test are ruff w/n curve!! we agreed, one of the nices teachers at OCC.

Got my grade and was surprised to have passed Mr. Prothro's final. Very hard. He is a very nice professor and want students to learn. He WILL make you earn your grade. TONS! of notes. Angel video helpful, but boring. Plan to take is Oceanography course.

from earthquakes to northpole flipping, his course is full of gloom & doom. After his class you don't want to drink the water, breath the air or eat anything. His geology is a must! Take!

just started class but i like him. he is funny and very willing to help people understand. yes, he gives you alot of stuff to remember, but i have had worse science teachers.i would take him again if i can. YES I LIKE EARTH SCIENCE

Just read the notes, watch the videos, ask him questions. You can ace his test, even if you are not a science head. Avoid if you just hate science.

Very interested in his class and very helpful when asking questions. I don't particularly like his "What" reply when you raise your hand. This is NOT an easy class! Waste of $$$ on textbook. Video assignments are annoying.

great guy, understands real life, but as everyone else says on here. his tests are difficult. im generaly a good learner, so science isnt hard for me, the classes are boring, but he gives you all the notes on angel, and home work is easy, but can take an hour to watch the videos. i suggest taking his class, p.s. get reinaldo for lab!

Funny but keeps on topic. Provides very good notes and provides us with lots of extra info. He tries to relate geology to our lives. Way to much hw and to hard of exams.

Had to post this! Thanksgiving and my family is watching Mr. Prothro's Earthquake Homework video on widescreen and are excited about it. This geology course is something to be experienced. It was a true wakeup call, and it opened my eyes to the dangers of the real world all around me. He is friendly and helpful, but his tests are like slamming your hand in a car door. I disliked science before it because it was always boring, but he relates it to the real world. I?ll never look

Yes, he is everything people say about him and more. He is not a lot to look at but he is one of the hardest, funnist & nicest teachers I have ever had. He gives a lot and demands a lot. He changed how I look at the world.

He his smart and funny, and although his class may seem hard, it is a good one to prepare you for a 4 year college. I have learned a lot this semester about pushing myself and EARNING my grade. If you want to succeed in life it takes hard work and I think he just wants his students to get a lot from the course, but the final paper is brutal.

He was a great professor!! very kind and helpful. I learned soo much and truly felt like i got my money's worth!! I have 4 children and felt like he tried to relate to my situation and seemed to truly care would def take any class that he is teaching.

I hated geology going into it. All I needed was a credit, wanted to squeak by with a c, and get the hell out. Now I go on the usgs website and poke around every once in a while. I love to look at bent trees and think "hey, that's creep!". My view on geology went from "BORING!" to "OMG! That's SO COOL!". He's an absolutely amazing teacher. :-D

You can tell he really enjoys his job and the subject at hand which is helpful. He posts all his notes online. His test are hard, you really have to study and to get through the homeworks I had to turn them into a drinking game. That's the only way you'll enjoy it.

Very demanding but he is right when he says you will be thinking about geology all the time after taking this course.

Hard class&Didn't think we were going 2 get along, however he STRIVES 2 help everyone, will stay HOURS after class jus2 help one person, gives good hints on how to study. He is well organized and loves his job which is reflected in the quality of his lessons. He jokes and tries to act like he grades hard, just be real and try hard & you will pass.

OMG! 33 page Final Exam and a lab Final from hell. Words fail me. But to be honest i learned a lot and will remember this class the rest of my life.

Great teacher. Had him for Planetary Science. Very knowledgable of the subject although he is mainly a geo guy. Would highly recommend.

Material covered is somewhat heavy during class but the knowledge is retained during the year. you learn more things that will stay with you. Final is so long. Homework is long but everything is well worth it. Great class and I would take another class with him. Hes awesome

Great professor who is helpful to students. Course isn't bad but you need to know the material. Homework videos help reinforce material and sometimes help you learn it if you don't do the readings. Final is long and not that easy. Guessing wont work well.The class will make you think and stay with you even if you don't think it will. take his class

Word of advice, watch the hw videos he puts them on tests and start studying for his final on the first day of class. Get Melissa for lab! Prothro has 3 hour lab final. Trust me

Fun class where you learn a lot. Prothro cares a lot about his students and wants them to succeed. Not a class you want to take if you expect to glide through without working. Easy A if you apply yourself and actually do the work. If you don't, you will do poorly.

Initially I hated him but he was trying to get me through science 111. I saw him at graduation and he smiled and applauded and winked at me as I walked out. His final test is hard and long. But I think I understand why he is so hard on us. Take him, survive him and I think you with be better for it.

When he says to start studying early for his exams, he is not kidding. Hardest class I ever took at OCC.

YES! Everything is true. Would take him again, just because I know he is straight about the level of difficult involved. He is not the professor to take if you are a slacker, but a much it you want to learn the material.

Honestly I think Prof. Prothro is a fantastic guy, but he is a terrible gradertext maker. He intentionally throws curveball questions, which is part of physics yes but not the way he does it. You really have to find the needle in the haystack for info off his slides, as the most innocent (and useless info) is on the test.

He's a really good professor. Except sometimes when you ask for help, he comes at you with the "you should know this by now" line. Overall, I would definitely take a class with him again

Right off the bat you should know that you need to work in this class. Prothro certainly puts effort into his lectures but he could be more enthusiastic, but overall does a great job. Make no mistake, his tests are hard and he forces you to think. With that said he's changed my study ethic for the better and I'm glad I took his class.

I had to post this. Thought his class was boring & he acted self-important. He talked about how understanding geology could save your life one day. Thought he was full of it, then my uncles house in Oklahoma slid into a river over the weekend, & my sister has to evacuate her house in Texas because of a creek. If you take his course, listen!

He is a very friendly, unassuming guy. I got a lot out of his class, even considering he made the highest number of typos/misspoken stuff I've ever seen in a professional environment. Definitely not a perfectionist, but he is enthusiastic and objective, which is good. If you have a good memory, and logical sense, this class is an easy A.

Mr. Prothro gives a lot of homework that is long, but most are interesting. I learn a lot of things I didnt know before. I see how he pushes us, because he believes we can do better. He is right when he said this isnt high school. Thanks Mr. Prothro, I'd take you again.

Prof. Prothro is a great teacher. Not going to lie, the tests are tough and the questions are pretty obscure, but they are all multiple choice which is a life-saver! Definitely an awesome teacher, very funny and has more than a few jokes that make the whole class laugh! Would recommend this class even if you're not a Math/Science major.

Start studying from day-one! Worth it and will take again.

I genuinely liked him. His class is difficult, but he gives you fair warning of the difficulty level. If you do the homework, come to class, and take the time to study, you will do well. He will always answer questions, makes the material interesting, and has a good sense of humor. I would take another class with him if I could.

Mr. Prothro will appreciate this comment. I like his course and he is a nice guy and teacher, but his final exam was like the season 6 premier of the Walking Dead. Mr. Prothro was Negan, Lucille was his exam and the class was Ricks group. I probably played Glenn or Abraham. His test was long & ended badly for some of us.

Yes, long hard exams, but he repeatedly warned us about test and homework. I did get a lot out of his class, but worked like a dog. Might take his solar system course in fall. Tough but fair. Also, will help with material if you go talk to him. Easy to talk too.

I thought Mr. Prothro was nice, kind and polite to me and the rest of my classmates. I think some students did not expect his course to be as difficult as it was.

So hes a great prof and you will learn a lot but heres the bad news, his test are super hard. Way to much information. He ask the most detailed questions on a test. If you are not a great test taker I would not take it. Hes a great professor but his testing is rediculos.

Mr. Protho is a great person who really does care about each of his students. His class can be tough if you slack but if you put in the work necessary it makes for a fun semester. Homeworks can be long but are very easy to complete.

Became one of my mentors and reason for passion. Great person and effective professor. If you haven't had a class with Calvin Prothro, Brian McAninch, or Buffy Quinn, you haven't experienced OCC enough yet.

Professor Prothro is a professor who is more laid back yet is still focused and determined to stay on track and moves at a steady pace for students in order to fully comprehend the material for the given course :)

Fair but tough. He will work with you, but you have to put in the work. Approachable, nice. A good professor and taking again next semester.

Show up to class. Pay attention to lectures. Do homework. Ask questions if you don't understand something, he's more than willing to answer or meet with you to help. Also, extra credit work. Do this passing grade. I will be taking lab with this professor spring '19.

Professor Prothro is very passionate about his field of work. He is more than willing to help students in need, both during class as well as his office hours. He has even offered to come in on the weekend to help students review for an upcoming test. Professor prothro really does care about his students and there success, in and outside of OCC.

Almost no math! Lots of homework and sometimes great in class discussions. Nice guy, but do the work. Exams have homework questions in them, especially his super long final, 100 questions!

Monday and Wednesday nights I could not sleep after Mr. Prothros disasters class. Everything we talked about in class seems to be happening, Earthquakes, Volcanoes, Tsunamis, landslides, Americans infected with H1N1 and Ebola. Best, most prophetic professor I ever had at OCC. A must take!

Excellent class I had him for geology lab. Honest grading and he gives extra credit. The last day of class he got pizza.

Video homeworks are great and fairly easy. Must study class notes and homework videos, he puts some homework questions on exams. No study guide, but has lots of office hours. Hopefully taking again next fall.

You will Need to work, but he is accessible outside of class and very supportive. He knows his test are difficult, but warns you and helps as much as he can. If I needed another science course, I would take him in a heartbeat. One of the best I have had at OCC. OCC is not student friendly and sucks, but Mr. Prothro is great!

Been in his class a week and already I want to be a geologists/scientist. Read his reviews and yes, but I am up to it. Yeah!

Loved him. He would lecture on something and a week later I would see something on the topic on the internet (FB, Instagram, etc.). He truly opened my eyes to the world around me. Love him.

I had Mr. Prothro for Natural Hazards and Disasters in fspring 2018. He said we are do for a global pandemic so. OCC is now closing because of a global pandemic. Hopefully I graduate in December. I wanted to take him again for Geology. He called it.

Good professor. Very knowledgeable about what he teaches. He was a little dry though.

Great professor. He is always available to help you if you have a question about a part of the lab.

I'm honoured to have taken the esteemed professor of geology Prothro's intro geo class. His lectures on geological econcepts inspired me to be a better person and have prepared me to face real world scenarios head on including but not limited to: earthquakes, tsunamis, and unexpected orogenies.

He is very understanding when it comes to late work, he will accept it up to a certain point. He keeps you informed on current events relating to the subject. Pay attention in class because he will not hesitate to name check you, lol. He is a very good professor and I would definitely take a class of his again!
