This is my last semester at UNT and I have never had a professor like this. He is amazing! So understanding and very good at communication. Like I can not brag about him enough. He is great! His lectures are good and he is such a sweet guy. Wish this wasn't his first semester. I would take him again!
No words can begin to describe how amazing this man is. A kind and beautiful soul with enriching lectures and teachings regarding developmental psychology. SERIOUSLY. An absolute gem to UNT and the Psychology department. Take him for absolutely any PSYC class you can. You are guaranteed to walk away with a wonderful experience.
AMAZING. Best Professor I have had in a very long time. I learned so much in this class. If he taught the rest of my classes left in my college career, I would take him!! He is fun, benefiting, caring, understanding, and reasonable. HIghly recommend him.
He is the most amazing professor I have ever had at UNT. He was respectful understanding and he actually listens to his students. He made this year great! I am for sure taking him for future psyc electives. 10/10!!!!
Due to the pandemic, professor sims is aware of its inherent toll on our psychological health and planned the class according to not only the standardization but also take into account the stressors of the pandemic. When he saw that the final project and final test were too close together, he maneuvered around it and kept us in the loop.
Easily the best & most caring professor I've ever had. He is very adamant about ensuring students' success in the course & he went above and beyond to address & accommodate my personal concerns for the midterm regarding my disabilities. The material is intriguing & inclusive, & he put as little pressure on us while still giving us good knowledge.
Prof. Sims is a really great professor. I found his class to be really engaging which was surprising considering it was online. There are no lectures for the online course, however, most of the assignments are based on readings/videos/discussions. If you keep up with the discussion posts and essays you should do just fine.
So, if you want a blow off course then take his online course! We had probably less than 10 assignments in this course and you did not even have to watch the lectures to get a 100 on them. If you actually want to learn something them take a different professor.
He was very considerate and wasnt too harsh when it came to grading and he cared a lot about our well being , overall he was a great professor and I recommend taking his class.
This professor cares so much about the students. His class is easy and his lectures are amazing. You have to be on yourself about watching lectures if you want to learn something since it is an online course. 10/10 recommend
He is an angel on earth
Dr. Sims is the best PSYC professor. There is little to no homework, but he is fantastic. 10/10 will take again.
Professor Sims is not the best but he is also not the worst. His class was disorganized and did not follow the syllabus at all. Little to no clear expectations. Also, it would take months just to receive a grade back on an assignment (Keep in mind he had various of TA's). Overall, the class was okay but there is a lot of room for improvement.
This prof was amazing! He was super helpful.
Dr. Sims is just amazing, his lectures and assignments are all so interesting and easy to grasp. He gets what its like to be a student maneuvering your way through college. He provides lot of extra materials and examples to his courses for students to grasp whats truly going on. Not only is he a good professor, hes a good person. Take him!
Best Psychology professor ever! Took three different classes with him and I loved all of them. He is so caring and works with you all the time. An angel!!!!!!!
Dr. Sims is so sweet and kind. His class w has a lot of short casual papers and his final is all short/long answer, and he has you watch many documentaries. He teaches such a tough subject with care and consideration. He is very understanding, and has lectures for each class. He is flexible and easy to work with. I barely used the book
He was a very calm and good professor and I learned a lot
Dr. Calvin Sims is probably the best professor in the entire psychology department at UNT. He is such a caring and knowledgeable man. He really cares about his students and makes his course genuinely interesting. Please take him if you have the opportunity!
Dr. Sims really cares about his students! While psyc 1650 is no longer a requirement for a B.S., if you can take this class with him for a brain behavior credit, go for it! The class itself is incredibly easy to pass as he's a professor that cares more about you learning than he does hitting you with assignments.
This man is amazing. Literally extends assignments if people are too stressed to turn them in on time. He's funny, engaging, soft spoken, but just amazing. Take his class for sure.
Professor Sims is an amazing professor that is very passionate about psychology. He wants the students to understand the material and cares that the student is succeeding in the class and in life. Definitely recommended.
Dr. Sims is amazing! He works with his students and knows how to make lectures interesting!
The professor was so caring!!! One of the best classes I have taken so far at UNT. You do have to look at the syllabus and follow it to the letter but very easy!!! He will work with you and he really cares about your well being.
Dr. Sims was one of the best professors I have taken. Multiple occasions he backed the due date for assignments, due to students feeling overwhelmed! There was not a lot of homework. The only major assignment that does take time is a research paper, however, he breaks it into multiple assignments and will meet up with you to discuss any questions!
Dr. Sims is well respected with clear reasons as to why. He is a very good speaker and delivers interesting/engaging lectures. The assignments are very reasonable and he is flexible as well as understanding. He provides many resources to aid in assignments and also materials for students to further their knowledge.
Instead of a final, Dr. Sims gives a research paper. This would be the most ideal situation if the research paper had better instruction to it. Unfortunately, he was not clear at all about the necessary contents of the paper. In addition, the poor guy doesn't know to work CANVAS. Amazing lectures though. Definitely will care about you.
10/10 Dr. Sims is great and doesnt penalize for late work and is very understanding. He truly cares about students.
nice guy, but disorganization was unacceptable. Almost your entire grade is one huge paper, turned in in chunks. Each assignment had an extended due date because he would assign something a month in advance, but only go over it the week of, reducing amount of time for assignments. By the end he ran out of time for extensions, and people had to cram
Dr. Calvin Sims is an exceptional professor with a vast amount of knowledge in Psychology. He has an extensive background in Sociological/Psychological study, which shows in his lectures. He's also accommodating and understanding when it comes to personal situations, so talk to him. I would definitely recommend him!
Such a cool and funny guy! His lectures were pretty interesting, he gave clear examples when asked, and was very understanding when it came to deadlines. Also, he was great with communication and welcomed any questions in person or via email.
Dr.Sims was the epitome of what a professor should be! He knows a vast amount of information about the subject he teaches and this comes across clearly in the lectures. He is very understanding, but not too much to the point that he becomes too lenient. I would take him for every class he lectures, he is great!
Prof Sims is great! Super funny, caring and relatable guy. He is very generous with giving extensions as long as you let him know in advance (not that we have many assignments). Grading is super easy and the class overall is super interesting. I would definitely recommend him to anyone!
Dr. Sims was an amazing and caring professor. He really cares about his students and shows that by giving mental health days, extending deadlines, etc. He is very understanding and will give you an extension on pretty much just anything if you email him. Classwork is very light, but there are a few bigger projects. There are also no exams!
Absolutely amazing professor, would take a million times over again. He's very easy-going and forgiving, late work is welcome when the semester is rough. Great guy, can't recommend him enough.
Absolutely amazing professor. Would take him any chance I could. Understands life happens sometimes, for us and himself, gives plenty of extra credit and allows you to turn in late. If you can take him there's no contest, he's who you should pick. Never respected a professor more
the most amazing professor i have ever had!! he is so caring and understanding that life happens and wants the best for each and every one of his students. no tests were given and a few major grades to see our progress. he cares more about us learning by going to lectures rather than giving mindless exams every few weeks.
I have taken Dr. Sims for 2 semesters now and I absolutely love him! He cares for students and understands how life can be difficult. His class was not mandatory for my class but I highly recommend going if you can! His lectures are very entertaining and fulfilling.
I have taken Dr. Sims for 2 semesters now and absolutely love him! He really cares and understands his students. Attendance wasn't mandatory for my class, but I highly recommend going to his lectures.
Dr. Sims is the best professor I have ever had. I have taken him for three classes and I would take him again if I could. His lectures are incredible and he is so understanding with deadlines. You have to take him for a least one class. You won't regret it!
Best professor ever. The class is not difficult at all. I can remember all the information from his lectures. He is very kind and approachable. He is not like other professors who believe difficulty=better. His way of teaching makes information more attainable.
Doctor Sims is amazing!!!! if you need a psych credit take his class. His class is very easy as long as you do his work on time. His lectures are very interesting and he cares about his students. If you need extensions, Dr Sims is very understanding and lenient.
He was very nice to students, EXTREMELY understanding for sure. Assignments were easy to understand. No tests in class because he knows how stressful it is to students. PowerPoints were super easy to understand. Responds to emails relatively quick. Overall an amazing professor.
Loved the class!!
Very student-focused, was willing to move back deadlines for almost anything. He was hilarious and very knowledgable about every question I asked. Amazing professor.
Dr. Sims was a great professor. He worked very well with you on if you needed extensions. There were no tests in the class, just projects and essays. He did not start doing assignments until the very end of the semester and it felt as if everything was rushed. I wish that the material was evenly distributed through the semester. Besides that, great
Professor Sims is easily one of the best Psychology professors I have had. I had him for General Psychology and am about to have him for the Psychology of Death and Dying as well. He cares a lot about his students and is SUPER lenient on deadlines. He is very straightforward and quite funny, so his lectures are intellectually stimulating as well.
Professor Sims is really good at his job, and he's really cool and nice, but he consistently came to class sipping on vanilla seltzer water which is a very suspicious beverage of choice. I don't really trust him after seeing this kind of behavior, so keep an eye out when near, otherwise it's a large class so it's easy to avoid contact with it.
Great professor and his lectures were very interesting. You do need to buy a textbook. Attendance wasn't mandatory, and there wasn't much homework given throughout the semester.
Probably my favorite professor I've had so far. He's very understanding of how stressful being a student is and presents information in a digestible manner. Be prepared to take notes every time you go to class.
Dr. Sims is a phenomenal professor. He is very responsive when students need help and gives a lot of grace if a student really needs it. His lectures are informative but he really keeps you engaged. He explains assignments well and has very clear grading criteria. He's also hilarious! Definitely recommend this class!
Dr. Sims cares about his students and focuses on ensuring lecture lessons are absorbed well. I personally did not enjoy spending all class taking notes while he was lecturing, but he does post slides at end of lecture. In order to fully understand concepts, slides can not be used solely to learn objectives.
Great Professor overall. The class and the professor were interesting and engaging. I would definitely recommend taking this class.
This was by far my favorite class taken at UNT. He was well spoken and made sure that there was a safe space for us to discuss without judgement or bias.
Dr. Sims was one of the best professors that i have taken from at unt and enjoyed his classes very much. While attendance isn't mandatory, it is still good to go because he mainly talks from experience and off of the PowerPoint and will do assignments from something he said while talking about the PowerPoint.
Awesome professor! Learned a lot and had fun. All work seemed relevant and reasonable
The middle third of this class was amazing, but the start and the end felt kinda shallow imo. If you feel like you have *a lot* to learn about race/racism, then I think this class will be great for you. Also, there wasn't much actual psychology, but I didn't end up minding too much. Still, Dr Sims is very smart and the class was good overall.
Dr. Sims did not disappoint. He is extremely caring, and intelligent, and wants the best for everyone. Barely has any homework besides a couple of writing assignments. I would show up to class when he starts a new unit as he will take attendance grades sometimes. Overall an amazing professor. TAKE HIM!!!!! also expect a group project. :(
Dr. Sims made this class so fun! Psychology is not my major, I had to take this class and I was dreading it, but he made the class so enjoyable! The only semi-negative thing I have to say is that you will be writing your hands off for all the note-taking, but he usually posts the slides to Canvas after class and tells you what is important. 10/10
Dr. Sims is really easy to talk to, his lectures were cut to what you need to know for the midterms. Cut lectures short if he felt we were tired or not too engaged. Attendance was not mandatory but encouraged. Gave many opportunities for outside learning, such as research or study abroad programs.
His lectures are super engaging and you can tell he loves teaching. He lets class out early almost every time but still stays back to answer any questions. Gave out two exams but you get a week to complete them. Really great!
Dr. Sims is the kindest, most understanding professor I've had thus far. He is so knowledgable and genuinely wants everyone to succeed. His lectures were informative and he made hard topics a bit easier to talk about. It is a difficult class mentally, especially if you've never thought about death, but Dr. Sims makes it worthwhile and so engaging.
Very good professor. Not a lot of assignments, but the assignments and tests are not hard. Tests were open note and take home. Highly recommend taking this professor if you can!
Dr. Sims is an extremely caring and thoughtful professor. All of his lectures are very interesting, engaging, and insightful. His classes are never a bore, would highly recommend taking him for any of his offered courses, a professor that makes you want to attend. He's easy to access outside of class and responds quickly, he's also understanding.
I love love this professor he's so funny and his classes are super interesting. He also is super laid back and understand about grade! Attendance isn't mandatory and I would honestly take this class again
BEST PROFESSOR EVER! I am so serious, he is kind and I had an issue with a group project we did in class and he was very understanding with the deadline which made me extremely grateful. He genuinely cares about his students and this class may not exist next year, but it was very insightful and made me look at race in a different light. TAKE HIM!
Genuinely one if the best professors I've ever had. If you don't pass his class with an A something is wrong. Such an easy-going professor who is very understanding.
Amazing lecturer and person. I also had an advising meeting with him which was great he is very kind and cares about his students. Class (usually) always got out in 50 minutes, sometimes quicker. Something to keep in mind, he said we would have assignments in the online textbook, which you had to buy, but we never did. Hold off on buying.
My favorite class out of them all. I love dr sims with a passion and he is who inspired me to pursue psychology
The most amazing professor. His class was my favorite out of my entire college experience. I would absolutely take another class with him. He had the most interesting lectures and coursework. He is very understanding if something goes wrong and cares about the students mental health. Attendance is not mandatory, but you will not want to miss it.
Professor Sims is awesome, he does a perfect intro course to psychology and as long as you show up to the lectures and take notes you're set. You won't really need the textbook, he was always really kind and accessible outside of class as well. 10/10 and I have developmental psychology with him this semester.
Only does a few participation checks but you can still get credit if you email him. Amazing lectures and only assigned a few papers that were necessary and advanced my learning.
Dr Sims is without a doubt the best professor I have ever had. He cares about his students so much and wants them to genuinely learn. He loves teaching and forming relationships with his students. I have taken several classes with him and studied abroad with him. Fun, easy classes and awesome lectures. If you wanna study abroad, do it with him
Was very relaxed. Graded by two exams, a few participation checks, and a final group project instead of a final exam. Exams were take home and classes were canceled for the week to give time for them. Overall very easy course and amazing professor.
Best prof ever hands down. Grades with grade & overall just a great guy.
Dr. Sims is one of the best at UNT. If you want to succeed in this class, get used to emailing him if you miss class. If you attend class and take notes, you will get an A. He makes it difficult not to get an A. This class is hard in terms of emotions, but the material is incredibly easy. Dr. Sims is very nice and loves to talk to his students.
Such a nice guy, there were very few assignments, all of which were very simple. He's very understanding, and you can tell he cares about his students. I think I went to class less than 5 times and got a 98, nice if your other classes are difficult and time-consuming.
The most caring professor I've had. The lectures are great, he doesn't just read the slides verbatim he adds in extra helpful information for notes that will end up on tests. I would love to take more of his classes in the future!
One of the best professors I have ever had. Extremely accomadating when it comes to anything you need. An excellent lecturer and talker, and is always willing to restate anything for anyone who didn't hear or understand. One of, if not the best professor in the Psychology Department. Very much so worth taking if you have the opportunity.
Dr. Sims has changed my life, not only from his lectures but also from his relatable lived experiences. He's down-to-earth and genuinely wants everyone to get a good grade. I had him for developmental and psych of race. Attend class and listen to the lecture. You'll come out of class every day learning something from him. Do your work, easy A.
Dr. Sims is awesome. He really cares about students and their mental health. He does his best to minimize barriers to education. I did an honor's contract with him, and working with him was a joy. He is my all time favorite professor.
The goat. One of the best and most caring professors i have had at UNT, he is very funny and cares about his students. Class is broken up into small, light assignments with take home exams
Dr. Sims is a pivotal professor for anyone in the psych program and any other program. He is truly the most influential professor I have had in my undergrad- if you have the chance to take him and more specifically his Psych of Race in the US course- PLEASE do, you will be enlightened. He is phenomenal
I LOOOOVE Dr.Sims! I took every other course here with him that I could. Even went on his study abroad to England (I rarely leave the house) because he was leading it. That was one of the most rewarding experiences of my life, and I wouldn't have been able to do it without him. Best professor I've ever had.
I really hope I get the pleasure of having Dr. Sims for another class. This class was so interesting, he made it even better. In general, he's a caring professor who remembers details about his students and pays attention to our needs. He's pretty lenient on due dates if the class is drowning in other assignments. In general, a good guy.
Excellent professor, really knows how to cultivate a love for psychology
This is a WONDERFUL professor!! If I had the choice I would take him again!! Only one exam and that's the final exam, which is pretty easy. Most of your grades comes from the discussion post and quizzes so you better do those. Overall, definitely a 10/10 professor
Dr. Sims is one of the best professors I have ever had. He is caring, passionate about his work, and understanding. He truly puts education and making sure that you understand the material first before any superficial grades. His lectures are very interesting and down to earth. I respect the guy a lot and would love to have him again in the future.
