Dr. A's the best! Lectures are interesting, tests are very fair and straightforward. Gives study guides. Book optional, but the online access is definitely worth buying; she pulls questions directly from their practice exams. Very helpful and clear. Study her powerpoints well, esp bolded info and stuff she highlights in lecture, and you'll be fine.
Not very nice at all. Do not recommend.
Ambivero was WAY more concerned about having the reputation of being a hard teacher than actually teaching her students. She chalked up the poor exam scores to "I guess you just didn't study". Doesn't look like she's too worried about changing her tests/teaching styles to help future students. AVOID!!!!!!
Ambivero is an excellent lecturer- Clear, Specific, example-driven concepts. I didn't use the book just her power points. Class definitely requires studying- tests will be Hard, but all from power points. She gives extra credit questions on the exam if you attend class. I would definitly recommend her- but be ready to do your part studying.
She is an amazing professor that explains even the most difficult concepts very well. Take orgo 2, and genetics before this class it will make things a lot easier. She pays attention to who is asking good questions and who is asleep. The test come directly off of the powerpoints. Ask your TA's for help during lab, they give great study tips.
Microbiology is not an easy course, prepare to do a lot of reading. Dr. Ambivero has clear and engaging classes. Tests are challenging and tricky, but shouldn't be a problem if you study enough. Study guides and power point slides are provided to aid your studying sessions. There is some extra credit along with class curves, making an 85 into an A.
Clear lectures that all the tests are based on. Book is good for definitions and clearing up concepts, but I hardly used it and easily passed. Lab is very easy as well. Just do your part to study and it will be an easy course.
I took gen micro this summer and I withdraw from it. If you struggle with classes normally, don't take this, this is the hardest I have ever taken. I have good grades for all other classes. All the tests are so hard. People may disagree with me because they are super smart. I am an average person who work so hard to get good grades.
Definitely the absolute worse professor I have had thus far at ucf. She is very articulate, but her exams are absolutely ridiculous in difficulty. Regardless the effort and time I put into this class, my exam grades were horrendously low compared to grades in other classes. Unless privy to passed exams and lecture notes, failure is guaranteed.
She loves to fail students. I don't think she knows that she is teaching to undergrad students. This is not gen micro, this is microbiology IV. No matter how hard you work for this class, you are gonna fail anyway. Don't take it if you have any other options.
Dr. A is a wonderful professor, but her tests can be impossible if you don't study regularly. Her power points contain a lot of information, so get ready to read a lot. This was honestly one of the hardest classes i have taken at UCF, but I feel that I learned a lot from it. To sum it up, this class is harder than Battletoads level 3.
Dr. A is really good about answering questions in class and doesn't mind helping you if you go to her office hours which were extremely convenient. Her tests were pretty difficult but manageable if you really understand the material. Definitely not a class where you just skim powerpoints and pass. Put in the work & don't be afraid to ask questions
She has an attitude that makes you feel sorry for her. Half the class failed and she did not curve a single point. She belongs behind the doors of a lab somewhere, not in education.
Dr. A is an amazing professor! She makes lectures interesting and explains the content in a way that makes it easier to understand. You must read the book to backup the information she provides in her powerpoints. Don't rush through the homework just to get it done, as it'll be a huge help for exams. Not an easy A, but definitely doable!
I walked into the first day of this summer class with the bleach blonde hair I have had my entire life. As the class came to an end, I found myself as a dark brunette from being inside for hours on end studying for this class.
People say she is hard, but she is fair. I used to just read her powerpoints and did okay, but when I recorded her lectures and listened to them whilst studying the powerpoints, I excelled in the class. Interact with her, get to know what she wants and you will succeed. She is fun, friendly, definitely NOT boring, and a great teacher to have.
If you've read previous reviews, you probably saw that this class is about extreme memorization but that's an understatement. The tests are unnecessarily difficult. Tests are comparable to Samsam's anatomy lab tests in that she includes select all that apply questions, but the answer choices may be false by one critical word. It's doable but hard
This is a class to weave out the pre med students. I took immunology and genetics and passed those easily, but the GENERAL micro class is made difficult for absolutely no reason. Definitely don't take this class expecting an easy grade.
Organic chemistry was a breeze compared to this class. She is a fan of select all that apply with very tiny details. Lab is easy, and will save your grade but this class is made way harder than it needs to be.
This professor is a good lecturer, but has no respect for her students. Her powerpoints are well organized and she is good at explaining things, but she is rude to students and gets angry over small things.
Her exams are tough and resemble the SAT (i.e. lots of bubble all that apply Qs) but she curves them AND offers up to 7pts EC per exam (5 from a "pop-quiz", 2 from a video) and posts a previous exam, practice problems, and a study guide (super rare). Engaging lecturer. Incredibly well-organized, color-coded ppts. Stern but kind, attentive to class.
Complaining students never went to class or her office hours. She spent lots of time with me to make sure I understood the material, very kind and articulate. Tests are hard if you don't UNDERSTAND the material and instead try to memorize everything. Don't be lazy and you will do fine.
Trying to be objective: very knowledgable but sets the bar high. Do yourself a favor and record lectures, she talks VERY quickly. Tests are EXTREMELY detailed oriented, but the material overlaps with other classes like immuno and MCB. Does provide test curves here and there (had 6 pt and 12 pt curves on a couple exams). Stay ahead of material!
Easily one of the hardest classes I've taken at UCF. Extremely rude for an Assistant Professor. Threatened to take off points on a quiz for messaging her on WebCourses. Teaches as though everyone in the class has a Ph.D in Microbiology, and she doesn't stay true to her word. The exams are extremely hard no matter what. 0/10. She's horrible.
This class was tough and Ambivero was tough. However, I think if you work really hard and study weeks in advance, keep up with lecture notes, do the study guide topics, strong lab grade, this class is doable. Any extra credit opportunities, take them, you'll need it. It can bring your grade over to the next grade letter if you're close.
Love her lectures, I prefer her to White. Tests are ridiculous, but everyone knows it. She referred to mid sixties as a high average. They give a nice curve at the end. Study days before the test.
She is very friendly and available to students, however her exams are extremely difficult and her questions very specific. Many of her exams are curved because the averages range from 30%-60%. A LOT of information on slides, a lot of memorization. If you dont have to take this, dont.
I HATED this class and prof!!! Microbio is a "weed-out" course and Ambivero does the most to weed you out of any professional medical career. Make A's in the lab then you'll have a chance at passing. Study the slides, what you don't understand from the slides, look up in the textbook. Hardest tests I've ever taken. It was God's plan that I made a B
I took this class in summer A, the course was extremely sped up, she makes it tough to follow along and talks extremely quick. She is very knowledgeable but isn't good at explaining the material she lectures on. This course requires A LOT of work, but if your willing to read every chapter and listen to her lecture for 4 hours you'll do good.
I'm currently taking this course right now for summer A and the test are pretty difficult and detailed. good luck. lab quizzes every Tuesday and Thursday and exams every Thursday. You really have to stay on top of your reading in order to do okay. You can barely catch your breath in this class. Also, the "checklist" she provides are useless.
So I heard a lot of things about this class and was very scared to take it but it wasn't as bad as people said it was , there was a lot of expectations and you practically had to memorize the book for her tests but I took this summer A so there was exams every week. Clicker questions were hell and there was no rounding. Basically just try your best
Horrible teacher and not very understanding. She says she gives "extra credit" but it's truly not extra credit and the lab manual is full of errors . Certain people shouldn't become teachers and she's one of them. If you can take this course as a transient student please do.
The tests are based on rote memorization of powerpoints. A lot of questions are worded very ambiguously and multiple answers can be considered correct, however only one will work. This class was the most difficult class I've taken because it only tests how well you can memorize 200+ ppts. Also it seems like there's heavy vote manipulation here,
this class is the hardest thing i ever taken at UCF. orgo and immuno are a breeze compared to this. Her exams are ridiculous .
this class could be fun, but not with this professor
I took Ambivero, White, and Wilson over the summer and Ambivero made every single one of the exams. Let me tell you that you do not want her making your exams. She gives the toughest, most specific questions and if you don't know the material better than her than you will not get an A on the exam. She did not provide a curve on the exams for us.
I loved her as a teacher and a person--but definitely be aware of exceedingly difficult tests. But it is VERY possible. I took this Summer C, devoted every day of the week 2-3 hours to memorizing powerpoints and making notecards, and managed to get an A in the course. So, yes, it is possible, with hard work and determination.
One of the harder classes I have taken at UCF. The lab section will be the savior of your grade so just make sure to do exceptionally well on everything there. For the lecture itself, the A is certainly doable but you have to put the work in. The people who are not doing so well in this class probably do not go to office hours.
By far the worst professor I've had at UCF. Throughout the semester I tried to make appointments with her to figure out how I can do better. First 2 times she cancelled on me and then never responded to my 3rd request. She didn't have any open office hours and always cancelled the by appointment hours because she was doing research.
I found this class to be very difficult, yet rewarding. iClickers were very hard. Tests were difficult but manageable if you studied lecture notes. I also highly recommend reading the entire book. Overall I feel like although it was overwhelming at times I learned a lot of valuable information especially as a nursing major.
I took MCB 2004C over summer A and it was extremely fast-paced. You definitely have to read the textbook to expand on what she and Professor Wilson talk about. If you study though, you will do fine. Just put in the work. Overall, I definitely had to work for an A, but it is very doable!
This was the hardest class I have taken as an undergraduate. However it was also my favorite. I learned so much and am glad I took it. I loved how structured and organized this class was. I can not imagine taking it during the fall or spring semester. It would be too overwhelming between lab and lecture. Put your all into it and it will be worth it
Difficult lecture exams. Labs were fun, I learned a lot since it was hands-on and it definitely helped my grade. Go over ppts and pay attention in lectures. Ambivero is a good lecturer. But please Ambivero, consider switching to coffee instead of drinking (plural) monster energy drinks a day. That stuff is not good for you.
Dr. Ambivero is very knowledgeable about the subject she teaches. if you're in the nursing program or any sort of medical sciences program, she is your only option for microbiology. My best advice would be to read the book and participate in lecture because when you ask her questions, she gives you a better understanding of the material.
Easy class. Averaged 5-6 hours a week outside of lab/lecture for study, so far have over 100 in the course. Introductory level material, barely past the level of bio 2. Act like an adult and take responsibility for your education and you will do fine-Im taking this class while working two jobs and have had no issues. Keep it up Dr A
Microbiology with ambivero, white and wilson is SO interesting I loved the class. The lab was really fun and helps your grade. MEMORIZE THE SLIDES FOR LECTURE EXAMS!!! I cannot stress this enough, questions are VERY specific and she'll ask a question about one line in the slides. GO TO SI SESSIONS. A is doable. Be ready to work.
I took her for a previous class and while the material was hard, she made it interesting. She has some great analogies that make key concepts memorable. The material is hard. You will have to work. A lot. But she and her TAs do a great job helping you understand. Don't focus too hard on the details. She cares more about the big picture. (micro)
She teaches you based on how well you can memorize powerpoint slides. For each test there are maybe 200 slides you have to memorize word-for-word and you'll get tested on details. By far one of the hardest and most unnecessarily tough classes I have taken. She doesn't make any effort to help struggling students either.
Ambivero's class consisted of 50-100 slide powerpoints and heavy memorization. Her lectures were information heavy, but she did try to make them interesting, unlike White. Tests are MC but still very difficult (select all that apply, all of the above options). Definitely not an easy class, but memorize the powerpoints and you'll get at least a B.
Unclear on grading. Does not seem to be inclined to use the +/- scale her syllabus speaks of to benefit the student. Overall pretty tough. Definitely focus on details and go as hard as you can in lab to boost your grade this will be your money maker. The TAs put on good test prep sessions go to all of them.
Warning to all, this is an incredibly difficult course. It's not for the faintest of hearts. However, the SI leader was AMAZING at supplementing the great teaching of Dr. A. I would say: go to SI sessions/website, read the textbook, study everyday, go to class, and participate in all extra credit. YOU GOT THIS! Remember to use your resources.
I enjoyed this class immensely. Unlike the prevailing sentiment here, I found it to be very simple; I studied 4 hours each for the first 3 tests, 4 for the lab practical, and 8 for the final. I read the pre-lab information for about 30 minutes prior to every lab to study for the quiz. There were plenty of opportunities for extra credit.
This class isn't easy but definitely doable. Her lectures are good, and reading the textbook helps a lot. the clickers will screw your grade up though, since they are not just completion.
Did not enjoy a single lecture, and even if you read the whole book and attend every lecture hall. The test will still be very difficult because all of the questions are being pulled out of thin air.
Her test questions are unlike anything that she says in class making the tests extremely difficult. I highly recommend not taking this class in the summer if you have literally anything else going on in your life. Buy the online component with the textbook and homework. There is no extra credit/curve. The lab is super easy. No help is provided.
DON'T take this class over summer A despite what nursing majors/advisers say. There's a quiz every class, a test every Tuesday sometimes Thursday too. She talks way too fast, doesn't respond to emails, puts two extra questions on the tests and counts it as the only extra credit/curve. No way to study for tests, the questions are unrelated 2anything
This class is not meant to be taken in the summer seriously just don't! There is a quiz everyday and a test every tuesday. No curves! Her exams are very specific and it's hard to learn 4-6 chapters every week. She's not an awful person she is really knowledgeable. Lab is easy make sure you get all the points you can because it'll save your grade.
Extremely fast paced. Not impossible to get an A but difficult to. READ THE TEXTBOOK. Not everything is on the PowerPoint. She talks very fast in lecture. Test every Tuesday. Once a test is over, start studying for the next one. Doesn't respond well in emails. 4 point curve on tests. No other extra credit. Test questions very application based.
Taking this class over the summer was like living in a Rated R horror movie. But I was able to get an A. Her lectures and powerpoints are pretty useless, reading the book is the only way to ensure you'll do well on the exams. Getting the full points for the lab portion is the best way to boost your grade.
Theres no way to study for her exams. Studied absolutely everything and didnt know majority of the questions on the exams. She doesnt respond to emails. Lab is the only thing that can help your grade and lecture exams are extremely difficult. Do NOT take this course over summer A
Absolutely one of the HARDEST classes I have ever taken. A LOT of information to in a short amount of time. Exams are very difficult, but have a 4 point curve. iClicker questions based on accuracy. Lab helps boost your grade, make sure you acquire all the points you can get. This is the class that recieving an A feels very rewarding.
If you have Dr A for MIcrobiology in the summer, prepare to stress a lot because she speaks quite fast during lectures and her exams are tricky. There is a curve, but you still have to read the BOOK (DO IT) and review the powerpoints to get a somewhat decent grade. The class was overall pretty interesting and the lab as well. However, the exams...
Dr. Ambivero is by far one of the best professors and lecturers I have had! She has high expectations for her students and her tests reflect that. However, if you work hard and keep up with her lecture, the class is very rewarding. She is very intelligent and caring once you get to know her, so definitely attend her office hours.
Taking this class during Summer C was great as it required a lot of studying. Ambivero spoke quickly but she posted recordings of her lectures. Exams were pretty hard with no curve (you can't just memorize powerpoints unfortunately), so you'll likely need to rely on extra credit and the lab to keep a good grade.
Ambivero gives out plenty of free points but dont be fooled. Her exams require a nuanced understanding of the material well above the level needed for an undergrad microbio class. In my opinion, if her tests were written more fairly and the material presented more effectively she would not need to cushion everyones grades with extra pity points.
I don't think she willingly tries to sabotage anyone but she has annoying quirks such as sending out announcements telling people not to contact her AFTER she releases grades. Also known to be rude. Supposedly a classmate had a muscle impairment in his hand and she wouldn't let him finish bubbling in the last 5 questions on his test.
Worked hard, but exams are so convoluted that you're just being tested on navigating rhetoric. She seems to take pride in tripping students up & gives no meaningful feedback. At 5 credit hours, the uncurved 89 just brought my GPA down by a tenth. Might have been worth it if I had enjoyed the class or learned a lot, but neither sentiment applies.
she does not like discussing assignments or grades despite having TWO other instructors plus 5 different TAs helping her class. One of those professors who treats you like a number.
good lecturer and makes information easy to understand and doesn't read off the pp. The pp are simplified so you aren't overwhelmed with info. She is nice and will explain things if you need more clarification. Just study for the test by engraving the pp slides into your mind bc test designed to really test you to see if you know the info
Tests are difficult but if you manage your time well you can do well. Homework is a little annoying but gives a good overview of the chapters. The TA's for lab were really great. Dr. Ambivero talks fast so I recommend using the recordings after lecture. I enjoyed that she did not use clickers etc. but there were benefits to showing up.
This class was very tough but I enjoyed it and learned a lot. Her ppts are very organized. She lectures super fast but uploads lectures on web courses. Exams were hard but not impossible. She Offered some extra credits and lab helps your grade. I loved Dr. A
Very nice, the class is hard overall but if you work hard and really try to memorize the powerpoints you'll do fine. Pay attention in class to ease the amount of studying you have to do before the exams.
There were a few assignments that were in essay format. The instructions are not specific. I got a poor grade so I emailed her (professionally and courteously) asking for a regrade or for specific directions so I could improve next time. She replied back days later with a rude email. Don't take if you're looking for respect or help with anything.
Grade is based on six exams, including the final. The final can replace 2 of your lowest exams. No HW is assigned and each exam are based on the lectures. If you focus during lecture, take careful notes, ask her questions, and stay on top of your studying you can get the A. Ambivero is great during office hours and will help if you approach her :)
I am on the verge of failing but its because she sucks at teaching and her tests she makes them to confuse the students rather than to help them. She doesn't help anyone if you ask for help, she tells you to pretty much help yourself. I would not take her at all but she was the only available. She doesnt give enough time for tests either.
This is the hardest and worst class I have ever taken. I am usually an A student but after studying for hours and days before each test, I still end up with D's because it is so hard. All the questions on the tests are insanely specific that I feel like I need to memorize the minute details rather than truly understanding the material. Don't take!
If you want to genuinely learn microbiology and be prepared for a career in medicine, Dr. A will help you do it. The class is a lot of material, and the exams are lecture heavy, so actually listen to lecture recordings and attend zoom meetings. Cramming won't help in this class either, but if you study the material as you learn it, you will be good
I would never take this class again. Would have done much better taking this at a state college as I am unsure how this professor even has a job teaching. Lectures provide nothing & have nothing to do with homework, lecture heavy that provides no guidance, no assistance outside of class, lab has nothing to do with the class at all. waste of money!
I took this class this summer and really enjoyed it. This was the best class I have ever taken in college but NOT EASY. She does not do +/- grading which is the only downside but lab helps. TAKE THIS CLASS BUT PUT IN THE WORK. I studied about 6 hours every day (6 week course) to get an A in this class. MEMORIZE THE POWER POINTS IS THE BEST ADVICE!
The book was only needed for the homework- tests were more based on her lectures/ powerpoints. I highly suggest paying attention to the quizzes taken at the beginning of class because those questions are similar to what's on the test.
I took this class in summer B, and even though it was a lot of work (you have to be willing to WORK), it is super worth it. Clear expectations. Listen to lectures/read powerpoints and MEMORIZE them. HW for each chapter and a case study for every exam. It's a lot of work, but not hard. An A is doable! PUT IN THE WORK, the class is super rewarding.
I dont get the negative reviews. Dr. A is super clear with her expectations and has awesome lectures that cover almost everything. Lab, hw, and case studies are easy points and if you study the exams are pretty cake. Put in the work and you'll do great!
So the good thing about Dr. A is that when I took this class online, she provided us with pre-recorded lectures so we could listen to them as many times as possible. On the downside, she is not accessible to her students at all. We had an exam every Tuesday (6 wk course) and she would take a minimum of 3 days to reply and even at times NEVER reply.
Dr. Ambivero was an awesome professor. She is an amazing lecturer and answers questions happily. The exams are based off memorization of nearly all the powerpoint slides; however, this makes exam information predictable. I took this with Orgo I over the summer and had no problems.
She is such a caring professor. I really enjoyed the class more than I thought I ever would. Her lectures are enough to study from for her tests. There is way too much information in the textbook that you do not need to go over. You get multiple attempts to get an answer right on the homework. Take advantage of the extra credit given before tests.
She's nice and organized. The course itself is super heavy and her exam questions were never directly based off her lecture nor the book. You need to memorize tons of info. Overall she's a good teacher but you need to put in all your hard work to succeed in this class.
It seemed like she was more concerned with preventing students from cheating rather than helping them succeed. She made test taking even more stressful than it already is during COVID.
took her during summer c, the class is not as hard if you dedicate time to it. really focus on the powerpoint recordings and read the book if you need clearing. overall, she's funny and knowledgable but if youre in between two grades, good luck. don't believe the hype about how its a hard class, that sets you up for failure. just dedicate time.
I am a mostly straight A student yet this is the first class Ive ever had to withdraw from. Im taking it as a prerequisite for pharmacy school and Ive done well in other high level courses. I spend hours and hours studying only to fail every exam because they ask the most random and specific questions, unless you can memorize an entire textbook.
Expects so much and makes everything so much more specific and harder than it has to be. Most of her test questions are so specific and get into such great detail it is impossible to memorize. Some of the questions just seem like history facts. She does not care about her students passing Blames bad class avg on students. Ignores emails. just awful
Gives pop quizzes for a non mandatory class during the covid pandemic. She has no sympathy for her students nor does she care about what is happening in their lives.
The professor claims zoom meetings are optional since she is not lecturing and simply answering questions during class time, then assigns pop quizzes unannounced. No GroupMe or any type of student coordination is allowed. Very cruel and unprofessional, especially during these changing times.
She really shows how little she cares about her students. Doesn't host a lecture, then gets mad when no one shows up to her q&a. Get ready to teach yourself! And by teach yourself I mean memorize the textbook.
I am taking this class right now. No matter how hard I study for the lectures I can not score above a C. The lectures are confusing and I never know what to study. I have never cried over a class more. If you can avoid this class and professor, do so at all costs.
A nightmare. Pre-recorded lectures will take anywhere from 1-2 hrs to transcribe. You then have to go to class for any pop quizzes and for more notes. Afterwards you will have 4-6 HW per exam that has about 50-70 concepts per HW. Keep in mind one concept is 4 questions . Afterwards you have to study for lab which is x2 a week. All in midst pandemic
She's a really unsympathetic teacher I was having technical issues with Honorlock during a quiz and she ignored my email for 3 days and then decided I couldn't make up the points even with proof that tech issue wasn't my fault from Honorlock. Says attendance isn't mandatory but has random pop quiz because of attendance. Avoid if you can. She sucks
Does not explain concepts well at all and basically just reads through the power points. Has pop quizzes during non-mandatory lecture times, inconsiderate to students, and makes test questions very specific without offering any guidance on what to expect on her tests. She makes this class extremely difficult for no reason
Terrible professor, steer clear if you can.
She was a good professor. Recorded her powerpoints then came on zoom to answer any questions. The test were difficult and you do have to read the textbook to elaborate on the powerpoints. Mostly graded on test but the final can replace one test grade. There is homework that cushions your grade just a little, so I would still do it.
Not great. Not very willing to help students (with material or technical difficulties). Homeworks are easy but very long and not helpful for the exam. Powerpoints are confusing and contradict the textbook. The tests aren't bad if you read the textbook.
This class isnt hard if you dedicate a lot of time to trying to understand it and the teacher did a good job with her pre recordings/slides. Some hw but not hard and textbook doesnt matter much. There was 1 pop quiz that she dropped and attendance isnt necessary. Pretty basic class that if you cant do well in, its nobodies fault but yours.
Powerpoints with audio recording, you honestly can't miss a single question on the test if you just listen to it and read the slides. take notes while doing your homework, drink some earl grey tea and you'll get an A. only thing that's kind of a bummer is that there's no GroupMe or any 3rd party chats allowed. discussions post are open though.
Dr. A is an amazing professor, but you do have to work very hard to get an A in the class. Her exams are hard and VERY specific, but if you listen to her lectured powerpoints and ask questions, you will be fine.
Not helpful at all during this pandemic. Doesn't read students emails. People are going through rough times right now so why would you give extra credit during a non mandatory class that could help out so many people. It just doesn't make since to me. If honor lock messes up or if your having technical difficulties, good luck. She doesn't help.
Honors section did presentations. Standard bio(med) class. LOTS of material but doable. Do decent on first 4 tests to not take final. The lab will save your grade. Don't cram it. When studying for tests, look at big picture compare & contrasts. As a prof, she is firm but an efficient, nice lady. No curve but a couple extra points built into exams.
Tests were VERY specific and averages were very low. Lab can save your grade. Don't take this class with other challenging courses. This class was not conducive to learning since we were tested on minuscule details.
exams are memorization from the ppts and listening to ppt recordings (use the txtbk for clarification of ideas). Exams are fair but you actually need to study its A LOT of information. Homework takes between 1-2 hours PER chapter. "Lecture" online is just answering other students questions so you teach yourself on ur own time. Final replaces lowest
Grading criteria is clear for lab and lecture. Make sure to memorize and understand the power points and you will do fine. Questions are mostly taken from ppts and information that she gives during class.
She is not helpful at all when it comes to what will be on exams. Her only phrase is "anything in the book fair game" but in reality, only the PowerPoint and lectures are what's on the exam. The homework is based on the book and consists of a ton of questions per exam and barely any questions are from it. Questions are super-specific.
This class is doing a real good job of killing any kind of interest I had in microbiology. Homework is long and tedious and has little to no relation to the tests. Tests are super specific and are intended to trip you up even though time is already limited. "Lecture" does an awful job of telling you what you really need to know. Avoid at all costs.
Without a doubt the most demanding course I've ever taken. It is almost as if she is under the impression students are only taking her class and do not have other courses to be concerned about. There is so much you are expected to know for each exam and she is not very helpful. She acts a little superior, instead of being accessible. Awful.
I don't understand all the negative reviews. The class is fine and tests are challenging but fair. Yes, it is a lot of information and it is going to take up a lot of your time, so don't take it with other demanding courses like orgo. Stay on top of the material and find a way to learn and memorize information that is both effective and efficient.
She doesn't test on how well you understand concepts or processes, rather on whether you memorized every single molecule in her ppts, all of which sound very similar, and named in numbers and letters. She treats it like a graduate level class, even though it's a requirement for all biomed students. No resources but the ppts. Very draining. Avoid.
Honestly, I'm halfway through the semester and YES, it is a difficult class but it is fair. I wish questions on exams weren't as confusing at times, but it is fair game. The lab portion (Prof. Wilson) is pretty straight forward and definitely boosts the grade. Little Extra credit and HW which is so helpful. STUDY THE POWERPOINTS! HW takes time!!
I am currently taking this class sitting with a B. The material is heavy as expected. I understand concepts, take good ppt notes and diligently do homework. HOWEVER SHE MAKES THE EXAM WAY HARDER THAN IT SHOULD BE. The exams are very specific, many "select all that apply" questions & there is no curve no matter how low the rest of the class scores.
No different from any other upper level biomed class. I took her advice and read the book and listen to the recordings of each PowerPoint and I got an A. If you arent doing well go to office hours and they help you. People complain about the homework but its worth a test grade and is based of completion so it honestly only helps your grade.
Gave out pre-recorded lectures that where she pretty much just quickly recites the ppt slides. Didn't really go into detail about any topics. Exams were tricky, go into great detail and some questions were complete curveballs. But she did give a curve after the exam scores got pretty low. If I had to do it again, I'd take Weigel
Dr. A provides prerecorded power points, which are annoying to use and don't teach you more than whatever is on the slides. Zoom sessions are a little better but I mostly self studied. 4 tests + final replaces lowest grade. 4% curve on 50 question tests , 3x 5 point EC quizzes, lab and HW are good grade boosters. Practice tests by SI are great!
This class is usually in-person but was taken online due to it being 2020 (CLASS TAKEN SUMMER 2020)
the tests would cover random slides from powerpoints and she wouldnt give any information on what might be on the tests. The lab quizzes were easy and if you do those you should pass
Her class felt like a real challenge for me. The homework assignments were long, but helpful. I felt like I never really knew what to expect on a test because there was so much content and she used both the book and her powerpoints. She didn't really seem too interested in helping students in my opinion. The subject was very interesting though.
Classes and professors are effective when there is a cooperative student-teacher relationship. Dr. Ambivero instead chooses to treat students in the most condescending and harsh way possible, testing on extremely minute details in ppt slides. Also the only class where you need a MEDICAL DISCHARGE SUMMARY to be excused for illnesses. I mean really??
Right off the bat she let's us know she isn't there to teach or be helpful to us in any way. She is expecting students to retain material as if they are robots; she doesn't answer questions, she claims the lectures are not for her to teach, just goes over what she wants. There's no tutoring/extra sessions, the class with her isn't worth the stress.
Shes not the worst Professor ever. I had her for the first 3 weeks of MCB2004C and honestly if you listen to the lectures over and over again the tests shouldnt be too terrible. Its a lot but doable.
No study guides, lectures didn't help much for the tests. Most of time I felt unprepared for exams and quizzes because I didn't know what to expect even after reviewing everything. Homework can be long but is helpful. A lot of material to learn in a short amount of time.
I actually loved Dr. A her lectures take some getting use to at the beginning I was struggling but towards the end I got an A on every exam it was not an easy A and it takes dedication and work. I took this course in 6 weeks and studied pretty much everyday but its possible and the lectures are extremely helpful. Use the PowerPoints to study!!!!!!
Just finished her class and barely made it out with an A but it is POSSIBLE! I looked at the ppt before class, took notes during, and asked many questions afterwards! Talk to the TAs, go to Si, go to office hours!! If you maintain a B average on all of your exams you can skip the final. Extra credit from lab will be your best friend so do well.
Memorize every single word on the powerpoint and you will get an A on each exam. Got 96's on all my exams without paying attention in class (was on tiktok the entire time). The professor is .. eh. Gets rid of points from your exam if you email her about grades or the questions on it. Responded to one of my five emails.
Microbio was always going to be a lot and Ambivero is a solid choice to take for the class. I feel like everything is laid out understandably, it's not hard to understand what you have to do to pass the class. Very happy I ended up where I did and I believe she genuinely tries to get everyone interested in microbiology, one way or another.
There are NO dropped or replacedexams, only if you MISS an exam and get a zero, then your final will replace that exam. I've passed Orgo with an A, studied every day, no partial credit questions, no reused questions, you need to know the book! Her lecture slides hardly touch on the topics needed for exams. The lab saves your grade but barely tbh.
Have to record lectures yourself. YOU CAN'T SEE YOUR PAST EXAMS! so you never know what you did badly on. 52 questions in 50 minutes. The wording of the questions is odd, I study two weeks before an exam, still did badly A's in all chem and bio classes Exam reviews are at 7:30 am on select days IF you can make it. I would've taken Prof. White
This class was an absolute nightmare. Her exams are nearly impossible to pass and theres no dropped exam. The exams consists of select all questions (no partial credit) or either "A &C are correct". Doesn't help that she doesn't let us go over the exam questions to see what we got wrong. Sadly, she is the only professor for MCB at UCF..
Never had a professor care less about their students. Class averages for exams are low D's. No dropped grades. No curves. Memorize every detail from the book and from lectures. Exams are meant to trick you. Doesn't care that students are struggling. If I could rate her a 0 I would. Not sure what she's gaining from making this course so hard.
I have had professors in the past who dont care about how their students do, but I think ambivero actually WANTS us to fail. The material is interesting and not that bad but her tests are impossible. The tests are unnecessarily difficult. Previous semesters were given extra credit but from now on, she is not, and we need it. DO NOT TAKE HER
I truly liked the way she lectured and how passionate she is for micro but she just sets you up for failure with her exams. No matter how much I studied I found the exams to be extremely difficult for no reason. I'm a senior & have never earned a C in any class but I'll be lucky if I pass with a C. It's ridiculous. Do yourself a favor & AVOID her.
You have to work for your grade, but its doable. Just go to the TAs and SI/SARC , they have helpful study techniques and practice questions. I used to study the weekend before for exams but in this class that doesnt cut it, you need to keep up. Homework and lab also hell your grade, but test arent that bad if you studied for more than 2 days.
Read through these comments and took suggestions from people who did well and applied it. Read the book and PowerPoints. Not that bad.
Dr. A is a good professor, her class is hard but doable. Attendance is optional but there was a couple of extra credit quizzes/assignments given in lecture. I went to her office hours once and she was more than happy to help.
Dr. A was one of the best professors at UCF. She will get you ready for the real world for sure. The TA's were really good too. They had a way of explaining that would make one understand the material easier. It would be a lie if I said the class was a piece of cake, however as long as you listen to her and do your work as a student you will be set
Her lectures were OK but they did not help when it came to the tests. There were 4 tests & a mandatory final that does NOT replace any bad grade from a previous test, unless you MISSED a previous test and received a 0. She also did NOT offer any extra credit assignments or quizzes this semester. Lab's easy & helps your grade but barely makes a diff
She's actually a pretty good lecturer as classes were somewhat enjoyable to go to. However, these were easily the hardest exams I have taken throughout my college career. Much harder than they needed to be and she also has some weird policies on dropped exam scores. I would have been better off skipping an exam than showing up to all of them.
If you are taking any other relatively difficult classes DO NOT take this class. There are 4 exams and 1 final worth 200 points. No drops, no extra credit, no study guides. The exams are extremely difficult, her questions are built in a way for you to get them wrong. Mostly select all that apply, no partial credit & you cant review your test.
Absolutely horrible, never seen a professor care less for her students
I just finished the final yesterday, finally done. This class is extremely difficult, be careful which classes you take with it. I studied the powerpoints and recorded her, i did not use the book but i did do the hw. I did bad on the first exam but I fixed my grade in the other exams
Didn't respond to emails for help multiple times throughout the semester, tests are structured in a way for you to fail, called us her stupidest class to TA's apparently, elitist attitude, ended up studying way more than an orgo 2 and biochem class, and much more! 10/10 recommend if you want to hate your life for a few months and lower your GPA.
Tough Class. Exams are very tricky!
Singlehandedly the hardest class Ive ever taken. The exams felt like a mind game. 50 minutes for 52 questions, most of which are select all that apply. No partial credit. I had to fight tooth and nail to pass. It felt borderline impossible to study for her exams. Orgo was a breeze compared to this. Lab was about the only saving grace I had!
I don't even know where to start on how bad this professor is. Exams were mind games. Half the class was retaking her after dropping b4. It's like she wants people to fail the final just to retake this torturous class again. AVOID AT ALL COSTS AND DON'T TRUST GOOD REVIEWS! Prob from TAs tbh. I don't normally bash on people but this was ridiculous!!
If you have the possibility of taking this class literally ANYWHERE else, with ANYONE else, do so. Her exams are impossible and you DEFINITELY CANNOT take this with other heavy classes. You may simply want to rip all of your hair out. My mental health has degraded so much after taking this professor. AVOID!!!
Really hard, but not bad. Exams are very difficult but I got the hang of it
Dr. A is an incredibly personable and fun loving professor who will do everything in her power to help you learn. She is super easy to talk to and really cares about helping you. Lots of extra credit, she believes in second chances to prove yourself and earn points back. Exams can be tricky so you have to know your stuff in depth. Lab boosts you up
Don't listen to negative reviews. This class, for a lot of students, will be their first real test in their college career. The exams are hard. But they are hard in the kind of way that you will need to know the material in order to do well in grad school and beyond. Lab is easy, it's the class's built in curve. Exams- 52 Q's, graded out of 50.
Exams have trick questions and answers; super specific with select all that apply answers. To do well in this class: read the chapter before lecture & take notes, go to lecture, record the lecture on your phone, take notes during lecture, relisten to the lectures before exams. Powerpoints & what she verbally says during lectures are what's on exams
Dont be fooled by good reviews. Yes, lab helps your grade. Lab has a different professor, thats the main reason you do well because she isnt trying to trick you with quiz/exam questions. The content in micro isnt too hard, her impossible exams are what gets you. Its clear that if the whole class is failing exams, the common denominator is dr. A
AVOID THIS PROF! Especially seniors looking to graduate DO NOT TAKE THIS CLASS! Exams are intentionally tricky. Dr.A would rather see her students fail then succeed. Has select all that apply questions which you dont even receive partial credit on. Recorded lectures, read book & PPT, studied everyday & still did poorly on exams. AVOID HER!
I am a pre dental student who scored in the 90th percentile on the DAT and has a 3.7 GPA. I can confidently say this is the hardest class I have ever taken and it is hard for absolutely no reason. The material is so simple but the professor wants you to fail with the questions she asks. DO NOT TAKE! 5 credit hour C kills your GPA.
I have taken challenging courses but this class was extremely difficult for no reason. Dr.A's tests sets you up to fail. Her exams are tricky! I've gotten A's in ALL my pre medical courses & this class killed my GPA! Read the book, PPTs, & recorded lecture. No way a class should be this horrible! Don't be fooled by good reviews.
Very hard class. I passed with an A because I printed out the PowerPoints, read the textbook chapter and took notes on the PowerPoint slides before class, went to class and recorded the lecture, took notes during class on the printed PowerPoint slides, & re-listened to the recordings while taking more notes when reviewing for exams. You can do it!
This class is no joke. Memorize the powerpoint and be able to explain the concepts. Being able to relate the concepts to others will help you retain information. Her final is CUMULATIVE. Do yourself a favor and create a hand written study guide for each exam and write down ways you memorized things. That final will kill you. No slack was given.
This class is incredibly difficult. Dr.A is a very intelligent/nice person. Her tests are where things go wrong. YOU NEED TO KNOW THE MATERIAL. STUDY for test1 like no other because this is your easiest test, you will thank yourself in the future. MOST IMPORTANTLY!! -->GET 100's ON EVERYTHING IN LAB!! this is how your grade is saved in lecture!!!!
RUN! Don't buy into the whole "This class will prepare you for grad school, med school etc." I've taken prep courses & classes that have done a better job preparing you than Dr.A's class. Exams is what messes you up; they have trick questions. You can do what is required of you as a student & still fail exams. Lab is suppose to help your grade.
4 exams + cumulative final. Final replaces an exam you've MISSED. Record her lectures!! Memorize every little thing from the ppts, otherwise no way you'll get an A. Hw for every chapter. Tests are crazy hard cuz there are a lot of questions with multiple answers. Lab is 30% of grade - do not slack, get all the points you can here cuz you'll need it
Difficult class, make sure to go to all of her lectures, record them, take notes on what she says, combine the info from her lectures with the textbook, make flashcards of every point and topic and study weeks before her exams, and make sure to do very well in the lab (easy points). Hard but not impossible, finished with a 91.
Creates her own exams so when she saw majority of the class was failing idk why she didn't change how she asked questions so students could get more clarification to perform better on exams rather than give trick questions. Record lecture/go back & listen to them. Read textbook & PPTs. Do well in lab for extra points; you'll need it.
Extremely difficult class for no reason. Exams are tricky and are meant to trip you up. Study weeks before an exam to perform well. Memorize literally EVERYTHING. Time management is key for this type of class. Complete HW WAY before exam day so you're not overwhelmed with tedious work. Do well in lab so it can help your lecture grade.
Definitely read the textbook and take notes on EVERYTHING she says in the lecture. Simply memorizing the PowerPoint will not be enough. The exams have select all that apply with no partial credit. Some questions are very specific so don't skip over minor details. Bank on lab to boost your grade with the quizzes and lab exams. Good luck!
DON'T TAKE THIS CLASS IF THIS IS YOUR FIRST SEMESTER AS A TRANSFER STUDENT!!! This is a 5 credit course and it will tank your GPA no matter what you do. The professor speaks very fast and enjoys being cruel to her students. She shows no mercy on her exams and that is what mostly makes up your grade. Lab helps a little but its not as helpful.
This class is hard overall but Dr A makes it harder . Tests are horrible especially when it cames to select all that apply, if you select one wrong you get the entire question wrong no partial credit is given. Get ready To study hard . The lab helps with your grade though . I wont advise anyone to take her , shes gonna hurt your Grades .
Dr A is a very knowledgeable professor, and her lectures make microbes seem fun. Her tests are really hard, but not impossible. Study in advance for every exam, do well in lab, and DO NOT use the final to replace a missed exam. Trust me the final was harder than a regular test. Make sure to write down everything she says. Office hours help a lot.
I thought this class was rough, but the material is cool. I can't stress enough that cramming will not work! Do not take many heavy courses with this class. Record lectures and listen back multiple times, study a week in advance at least, get the hw out of the way asap. Lab will help your grade so much, try and do well on all quizzes/ lab exams!
She spoke extremely fast in lecture that I had to record and listen back later. Studied practically everyday from the powerpoints, but still struggled on exams which were way too many questions in a short time period and were not straightforward at all. Lab will slightly boost your grade. No EC, no dropped or replaced exam, and final is worth a lot
Professor Ambivero is amazing lecturer. She speaks fast so pay attention. Class is extremely hard and requires lots of studying, but she makes it fun and interesting. Go to SI and SARC sessions for practice test. Do not skip class or you will fail. Get ready to study a lot
Horrible
The Professor shows lack of interest in helping students or wanting to work with them at all. I enjoyed the class itself and the material, but she has very strict policies on point deduction if you ask her anything about exams or the questions on them, she goes through things pretty fast and if you have trouble she has a "well that's tough" attitude
I never had an issue asking questions or getting the attitude others have mentioned, maybe because I'm an actual adult & understand that the responsibility of getting help is my own. Office hours from both Dr A & TAs, learning objectives, homework, extra credit & more to succeed if you want to. Don't sit back and expect anything to be handed to you
Unlike her other classes or the other molec professors this class has no TA's, so expect no practice questions or any actual review guides, or any type of review for the cumulative final. Molec 2 may just not her specialty, so truly understanding the big picture is difficult especially on top of a busy workload.
It's unfair for the EXIT EXAM to be heavy on QBM material when that class is not a requirement for Biotech. I had to take an exam to graduate that had questions on a course I NEVER took. Making that optional for us, with Methods instead, and then holding it over our head for graduation is unfair to biotech kids and something needs to change.
The class is a senior level class so get ready to input time. There are learning objectives, quizzes, homework and activities that help you piece things together before the exams. Lectures are pre-recorded and in class she goes over the material connecting the dots. A few extra credit opportunities were also given
So DO NOT TAKE THIS COURSE WITH HER! Only gave us the textbook, PowerPoints and flash cards, only hosted discussion hours instead of teaching the information. YOU ARE ON YOUR OWN FOR THE ENTIRE SEMESTER! Sent an email about attending Weigels classes instead of her teaching her own students! Unless you are interested in this course dont take.
Molec 2 isnt typically supposed to be harder than Molec 1 but when comparing the exam averages I found that the exam scores averaged about 5 point lower, and the average on the final was also 10+ points lower than in molec 1. Same textbook, many of the same students, but ofc different material and professor. take of this what you will.
SHE. IS. AWFUL. Any other option, choose that instead of her. Her exams are ridiculous, the final is cumulative, and you HAVE to attend the lecture. She says the tiniest things in lecture that will 100% be on the test. Her powerpoints are vague and hard to study. The lab midterm is easy so make sure you study cause it can help your grade a lot.
Do not take this professor. I study day in and day out. Dr. Ambivero makes her exams extremely difficult for no reason. You have a cumulative final so make sure you know information from each exam as if you were already preparing for the final exam. I WOULD NOT recommend taking her. HORRIBLE!
She is an okay lecturer she talks really fast so I recorded the lectures, the material itself isnt super hard, can be interesting but the exams are hard to get a high score. PP based, doesnt drop any, questions are worded tricky and a lot of select all that apply that you DONT get partial credit for. STUDY. The lab helps your grade, but study
I would definitely not recommend her. I never thought I would be on the edge of failing. Exams are unfair compared to how much we study. The select all that apply are the worst type of questions you could ever imagine. She gives extra credit but makes you work for them and you will never get the full grade for them.
The content is interesting but the way this class is taught is frustrating. Homework is barely relevant to exams, which are unnecessarily hard with trick questions. Final only replaces the lowest if you miss an exam. She talks quickly in lecture so you have to record it; do well in lab and memorize every word she says in lecture and you might pass.
This has definitely been the hardest class I have taken at UCF. It is extremely lecture heavy, and missing one class could hurt you on the exam. The tests are extremely difficult and made in a way that is hard for most students to do well on. Do not taking this class with other difficult courses as it will require all of your time. Lab grade helps.
Her exams are multiple choice but there is almost always options that say A and B or all of the above and you really start to 2nd guess yourself, like "i know it is a, i know it isnt C, so could the answer choice be A or is it A and B" and she does not give partial credit on select all that apply. She does not curve. She has extra credit so do it.
When I tell you I knew the information for this class inside and out and still got a B. She is a great professor, but the way the class is structured is to make students fail and every single exam has very difficult select all that apply questions. No dropped exams or assignments in lab or lecture, so make sure to do well on EVERYTHING. Good luck
A disappointing professor. She does not get to know her students. Dr. A is well knowledgable, but a terrible test giver. This is the first course I failed in college. Unfortunately she is your ONLY option at ucf. Evaluate your post-undergrad options. If they don't require the upper level micro, save your GPA and take this course at another school.
Worse professor ever. DO NOT TAKE!!
There was no reason for this course to be this difficult. I have never taken exams that were this detailed in my life. Basically have to memorize the ppts word for word in order to get an A. However, TAs were extremely helpful and lectures were actually interesting and straightforward. Make sure to get As in Lab as that will save your grade.
I took Prof. Ambivero in summer A for 3 weeks. She has pre-recorded lectures if you don't want to go to class. She is an okay professor but her exams though were terrible because she didn't put stuff that she taught on the exam. Some of the stuff came from God knows where. If you don't have to take this class in the summer please don't.
she's organized and straightforward. you NEED to memorize every detail on ppts, but reading the textbook, listening to recordings, and paying attention during lecture help solidify info even w/o studying. STILL STUDY THO! weekly case studies were like pity points, so be prepared! 5 exams are curved w/ 4 points. no cumulative final. hw is easy.
I watched and transcribed lectures, made flashcards, and attended SARC to study for exams and still would only get a C. Its unfortunate that she is the only professor at UCF that teaches micro because 1/2 the class is retaking it from failing previously. The material is interesting but she makes exams unnecessarily difficult.
This class is really hard and the most demanding one that I've taken so far. The tests are so hard but going to office hours of both the professor and TAs helped a bunch. No one goes but they're a really good resource. The TAs reviews sometimes will have questions similar to the test so pay attention. SARC was good but as supplementary studying
I'll be honest, I do not like Dr. A's way of lecturing. I feel like she confused me more. Whenever I studied on my own and did not attend lectures, I did better on the exams. The exams are tough but doable. I probably could have gotten at least a B if I had not taking another science class during the summer. Very demanding course.
Spends a considerable amount of time watching group chats instead of correcting the practice exams that always have wrong answers. SARC claims that she reviews each of the exams before they have us study with them, but DrA ensures there are incorrect answers on there and her reasoning is "students should study the reason why, not the right answer."
Just awful, awful, awful. My best advice is to give your all in lab, do not miss a single point from lab. It is worth a good chunk of your grade and it is doable to get 100 on everything lab-related. Lecture exams are so difficult, don't rely on these to help your grade. They are so detailed no matter how much you study for them.
Absolutely terrible. I have never seen a professor with such a lack of consideration and effort towards their students. It truly does not matter how well you study, it is solely dependent on how good of a test taker you are. The subject itself is interesting, but the exams ruin the experience. She's the only option, unfortunately, so try your best.
Her tests are heavily lecture-based. She is an extremely caring professor for her students who genuinely want her help because they do not understand and offers advice and encouragement constantly. She goes out of her way to help her students because she knows her course is hard. If you do not go to lecture, you will fail the course
Absolutely HORRIBLE, listen, this is by far the worst professor. Honestly, this class is interesting and didn't have to be this hard, but she made it so tough, no matter how much you study, can't seem to at least pass her exams. Do your best in the lab, that will save your grade
Actively listen and take notes during class. She really does care and does a great job teaching the material w/ her background knowledge & helping students after class. Her tests are definitely detailed but getting a hang of the detail she brushes over in lecture and understanding the concepts as a whole will make them a LOT easier.
Do yourself a favor and absolutely DO NOT take this class with another difficult course. This class is the work load of two classes combined. The key to an A is recording her lectures and writing down EVERY single word and detail and studying EARLY. Had an A all semester but the final (cumulative) is extremely difficult and killed my grade.
I made excellent grades on my exams however, the exams and class overall had me contemplating my existence. Very tough exams and if you want an A, you HAVE to know everything. LOVED the subject, dont care too much for the prof. I studied 7 days a week....seriously. Plan ur schedule wisely. 5 credit hour course. Good luck!
Honestly, if you can avoid this professor I would highly recommend it.
Every exam in based on the lectures which she refuses to record, provide notes for, or answer questions on. The exams are full of trick questions and ambiguous wording. Unfortunately, there's no avoiding this professor or her disdain for her students. Record the lectures and take deep breaths.
This class is very challenging, you must attend every single lecture to have any idea of what's going on. Record every lecture and listen back to take extra notes, that is the only way you will do well. She is very knowledgable of the topic and it's admirable, but in turn you are expected to be equally as knowledgable in order to pass the exams.
Took this class in 2020 but had to return to write an honest review. Ambivero is very knowledgable but you are expected to know what she knows. Harsh grader and loves trick questions. Only if you write down everything and memorize EVERY powerpoint word for word will you pass. Stick to teaching yourself. Lab helps. Best of luck science majors!
Her tests are impossible to do good on unless you memorize every single fact she lectured on. Will use technical terms and not explain them and references immuno even though it's not a prereq. Says there's only 5 select all that apply with no partial credit but it's most of the test. Even an actual bacteria cell couldn't pass this class. AVOID HER
It's a shame that this is the only professor that teaches microbio at ucf (from what I've seen) and she absolutely KNOWS it. She can be very rude to you in email and in my experience left me never wanting to contact her again. Others I have spoken to have had similar interactions. My advice is to never contact her. The lab is fantastic though 10/10
I still do not understand why she is only microbiology at UCF.
Unfortunately, your grade ultimately comes down to how well you do on the exams in the lecture since they're so heavily weighted, but Dr. Ambivero makes these exams next to impossible. Select all questions with no partial credit. Class averages weren't much higher than a D in the class. UCF do better - hire more microbiology professors!
I preface this saying I'm usually a C student- she is the best professor I have had at UCF. The class is difficult- but the exams are very fair. If you go to class every day, record lectures, and take note on everything you will pass. Also, do ALL the practice exams and ?'s (from SI too)- a lot of those appear on exams again. She's not bad at all.
Took molec 2 online, she offered it in person too. She is much less hands on for her online class, so its rlly important to stay on top of ur studying. She offered a lot of extra credit quizzes & assignments. Practice exams and study objectives are helpful. Def struggled with this class but its for sure passable w good studying & light course load
I took organic chem and this class at the same time and I easily spent 3x as much time studying for micro. Even when I knew the content, I wouldn't know the answer to select all that apply questions because of the wording and the level of specificity. Not good to take if you have other difficult classes... Good luck
Dr. A was fine. Course was difficult and felt more than a 2000 level course. Professor is completely unresponsive at times and unhelpful if you need assistance with anything. Offers course via Zoom but walks away from computer so you can't hear anything happening. Unclear with announcements/ expectations.
Extremely heavy exams, and you have to memorize every single detail in her PowerPoint. If you are not her, passing her class with an A is impossible. She gives you only 50 minutes on the exam with 52 questions, and every single questions are really wordy and tricky. She is the only professor teaching this course so there is no way to AVOID her.
Don't trust most of these ratings. The professor is always willing to help as long as she sees that you are also putting forth your best effort. I recommend not missing lectures and recording the lectures. Her tests can be detailed and challenging but they are fair. Always do the SI practice exams. Just go in with a positive mindset &you'll be fine
I did online; class is 650 points total with 4 exams (400), cumulative final (100), online HW modules (100), and weekly quizzes (50.) Memorized powerpoints and took lecture notes, but some exam questions are literal thin air. Lecture exams were challenging but final was much easier. Don't fall behind, get all points possible on HW/quizzes. Tough A
She or her assistants deleted my prior rating LOL. Summary: class itself not bad but prof makes it much harder than has to be. During my sem, NO curve or EC. Experience not enjoyable and very stressful (more stressful than orgo1+2, biochem, etc.). Would not recommend her but shes the only available prof. Stay ontop of material, do not fall behind.
Made the class hard than it needed to be. She can be helpful outside of class. But her exams are not easy, fourth exam was about immunology when this is a microbiology class. Her immunology questions are harder than the actual immunology itself. Very poorly taught.
Honestly she makes her class way harder than it has to be. shes the only professor at ucf that teaches it so you have to take it somewhere else to avoid her. her grading scale really needs to be lowered to a 65 as passing, because a 70 for passing is damn near impossible. dont recommend, probably about to fail and ive never even gotten a C before.
If you can take this class anywhere else, with any other professor, do yourself the favor. This course was incredibly hard, as an average A student, I struggled all semester with several study techniques. More challenging than orgo. Test heavy with ambiguous questions, way harder than necessary. Honestly not worth sacrificing your mental health.
Beware of this professor. I was averaging pretty good on my test scores until the last exam. She COMPLETELY screws you over on the 4th exam adding unnecessary questions that have nothing to do with the content. They say the hardest exam was the 3rd exam but it was the 4th, plus it was her lowest exam average. It forces students to take the Final.
The worst professor I've had (yes worse than lawrence for orgo). Disrespectful. Doesn't want to help you boost your grade at all, despite teaching a 5 credit class. The way she "drops" your lowest is taking your second lowest and replacing it with your lowest (so if your bottom two were a 63 and a 64, your 63 becomes a 64). The lab was easy though.
As someone who had to retake this class, Dr. A is not as bad as everyone is making her out to be. This is a difficult course. I would compare the workload with organic chemistry. You cannot miss her lectures if you want to pass. Record lecture, study the details in her power points, and go to SI. You can not coast and expect to pass this class.
Worst professor I have ever taken. Does not care at all if you pass or fail. If two of your lowest scores are nearly the same good luck because you won't get any additional bumps. If I could give a 0/5 rating I would. If you can stay away.
Class is hard. No curve and a lot of material. I spent the same amount of time in this class as orgo but the material is much simpler. My advice is take notes in class, record lecture and take notes on the recording and put it on a Quizlet and study. DO NOT FALL BEHIND. Make sure you do good in lab IT IS your cushion. Test are hard for no reason.
If you can avoid taking any classes that she teaches avoid it! She does not care if she is the reason you don't graduate. She doesn't consider students feelings, only her own. Worst class I have ever taken and this was my last class. If you do take her, good luck!
This was a difficult class itself but the professor was great. If you go to class and record lectures and listen to those lectures outside of class, you will pass. People who are lazy and think they can skip class and not study are the ones complaining and failing. Her dropping the lowest test is the reason I got a B. It is passable if aren't lazy.
This professor is a vile human; she will smile and be passive agressive while trying to make sure you fail this course (angering). The Exams are anything but straightforward and often times include materials she did not cover. The only people that do well in her class are cheating. This instructor should be removed from UCF do not take her.
The least caring professor. Does not let anyone ask ANY questions during the exams. Has material not on slides or in textbook on exams. Most questions involve bubbling more than one answer. She will include "all of the above" or "A and C" type of answers on her exams. Anything but fair. Anything but respectable. Enough bad things cannot be said.
Dr. Ambivero was my favorite professor at UCF thus far. I enjoyed her lectures, and although attendance is not required it is highly recommended. She is very caring and I respect her a lot. The people complaining are probably mad they couldn't wing her class and pass it. You have to actually put in the effort, and it will pay off. Keep going Dr. A!
Professor A is a very passionate, and knowledgeable person. She genuinely wants students to learn. However, the exams were overly detailed and a bit confusing. I felt her exams focus too much on reading comprehension rather than the material itself. If English is not your first language, you will struggle. She gives extra credit points per exam.
To pass the exams you have to memorize every single slide from the powerpoints and she includes select all that apply questions. The professor is rude and lacks empathy. Don't bother emailing her unless you want to receive a passive aggressive comment back. The lab is really the only saving grace.
You will not pass this class if you skip lecture. GO. TO. LECTURE. Do every practice exam you can find and become familiar with how she words questions. The TAs exam reviews are ESSENTIAL. The lab is easy to do well in so take full advantage of that to boost your grade. You will come out of this class knowing everything about E.coli
This was by far the hardest class I have taken at UCF. The exams are very heavily weighted in lecture. Please do not take this class with another class with high value like Organic Chemistry. This class requires A LOT of studying. Read the reddit guides on how to pass and take their advice literally.
I got an A in the class (94%). I did not realize until the last exam of the semester, but watch the TA reviews, they have all the answers to the exams and tell you exactly what you should know from each slide. Besides that, watch the lecture recordings and take notes. This class is doable but you need to put in the work.
She is NOT clear on what you need to know. She pulls test questions out of nowhere sometimes. Do NOT take this class over the summer if you have other things to do. I got an A but it was not easy getting there. I had to study for days leading up to the test just in case she wanted to throw curve balls. Just go by the PowerPoints and not the book.
The class easier than Orgo. Lecture slides contain information that you should know, and her lectures add onto them (though you need not remember every word said). She talks fast, so I recommend recording lectures. Exams require some thought since they have "select all that apply" questions. Essentially, you need to know and understand material.
Make sure you record the lectures. The early you start studying the better.
I liked this class but you definitely have to put the work in for it. Exams are lecture-heavy and have tricky wording, but if you know your content well you'll do fine. I took notes in class and recorded lecture, then copied everything onto a different document to organize my notes and study. Dr A is a great lecturer, just talks fast at times
Take this class over the summer by itself if you can! I was super close to an A but in no way was it easy. You MUST put in the time to study for exams, don't wait until a week before. Record lectures and take notes in class, then go back and take more notes on what you missed. Hw is done through the textbook, but I didn't read it otherwise.
I love the subject but she wants you to know your stuff like the back of your hand! Do AS MUCH reviews with the TAs/SI/Peer tutoring as you can & don't allow yourself to get behind on the material because she says a lot of info in a minute! Do really well in lab & maybe take immuno/micro bio 1 first before this class because it's super helpful.
The test are unbelievable. Shortened. -Her previous exams were compromised so she remade them harder as punishment. -Purposely omits info on powerpoints but tlks to fast to properly fill in blanks. -Doesnt record lectures knowing that its needed to know everying for the test. But will allow u to record the lecture where you cant hear anything said
Ambivero is a good teacher, though her exams are tough and don't match with the SI sessions I've regularly attended. Even though she gets you to where you need to be in order to understand the material with how the lecture flows, it feels like it's not enough for the exams' expectations.
It was hard getting a B. Must attend lecture/record lecture, she uses info she SAYS on exams that aren't on powerpoint. Do not listen to her when she says "big picture" or "don't get caught up on details". That is 110% not true. Know every detail about everything. Her exams are made to tricks students on purpose. Study material 2 wks in advance!
I didn't even end with a bad grade I got a very high B. You have to go to lecture because even if you read and go to lecture she still ask things youve never heard Shes nice until you have any minor issue She always sounds like she's being nice but her words are incredibly condescending. And an 89.6 doesn't even count as an A in her class👎🏼
Dr. A teaches a hard class and makes it more challenging with her tests. But she wants you to understand and learn to the fullest extent. She loves what she does and I've seen how happy she gets answering questions. But if you challenge a question at a test review, she may be short with you. Record lectures, listen back, take notes, and good luck!
This was the hardest class I have ever taken. Organic chemistry was way easier. I feel like the purpose of an exam is to test students understanding of the material and not how much a student can memorize off the PowerPoint slides. Yes I put in the work everyday, never missed a class, paid for a tutor, attended SI and it still wasn't enough.
Her lectures are great, but she talks very fast. Allows you to record lectures. The content in the class is managable, but the exams are extremely difficult. We were tested on very minor details, with a lot of select all that apply and complex multiple-choice questions. Class averages on exams were around 60%.
Absolutely terrible. She really wants you to really learn the content and like every detail of it but does it in the most inconvenient way possible. Lecture slides are bare bones, doesn't record her lectures (unless she is absent), talks fast, and follows it up with difficult exams where the most minute detail matters. The lab is the saving grace.
I've never had professors say you can't finish bubbling in your scantron after time is finished. She's VERY strict on this. You can't even write your name or NID after time is up or she will give you a zero. Didn't have enough time to finish bubbling the scantron but my packet was done. Got a bad grade when I knew the information… overly strict.
Very knowledgeable about the topic but very strict with rules. She speeds through slides, so you need to make sure you record her. You can't share the recordings with anyone. Your grade is basically dependent on how well you can do on the exams and final, but her questions are VERY difficult/specific. She says it's like MCAT or GRE, but it's not.
Unnecessarily hard class. Fun to learn about but she makes tests impossible. I am a 4.0 student graduating, this is by far the hardest professor and makes learning not enjoyable. Yes I do well on her exams but while taking it I feel awful and overwhelmed. Studying 25 hours a week for this class I shouldn't be struggling on exams. Do better Dr.A
No matter how trivial or small a detail you hear in lecture or see in the ppt: memorize it. Select all, both A,B, all/none of the above. I have 89 B, passing is very easy IMO, but for an A: I would say dedicate your life to memorizing the most minor of details, but no amount of studying could've prepared me for the kind of questions she asks.
This was the rudest, toughest, most condensing professor ever. I studied for hours on end and would still fail exams. She doesn't care about students and tries to trick you. Its not about learning the informations its learning how to read her tricks On the lab the unknown test was messed up multiple times but it was still at our fault when incorrect
Class was harder than it needed to be. Asked for student feedback during the semester but refused to put any of it into practice. Talks extremely fast. If you don't go to lecture/record you won't pass. Exams are not based on how well you know the material, but how well you can avoid unnecessary tricks. Seemingly liked having students struggle.
Honestly the hardest class I have ever taken and the worst professor on top of that. She has great lectures but you have to record all of them and write down every single detail before an exam. 52 questions in 50 minutes, very detail orientated exams. She is rude and short with students, very condescending and has a superiority complex.
Professor Ambivero is one of the toughest professors I've taken. Her lectures aren't recorded, her powerpoints are bare bones, and she speaks super quickly with the attitude that you already know everything she's saying. It's manageable to pass, the lab saves your grade. Be prepared to be taught by the TA's a week before the exams.
Literally the worst professor at UCF. She is heartless and thinks she's better than everyone else. She's the only micro professor at UCF so I had to take her class but damn do I regret it. Made an interesting class stressful and unpleasant. Would give her a 0 star if I could.
For honors the tests are 60% MC and 40% FRQ. FRQ include drawing and labeling and are as specific as the MC. There's like 6 ec pts per exam instead of 4 like normal lecture but its not worth it. Take the normal lecture. She takes great pride in watching students struggle and is very unaccommodating. The lab and final are key to saving your grade.
class was harder than it needed to be as the content is easy but the exams are unnecessarily hard and specific. Her slides are vague, the textbook and the homework anre unhelpful. No extra credit. Take this as the only class during the summer when you have no life outside of school. Lab is fun and will provide some mental relief. good luck.
Her class is the reason I could not graduate. Topics are not too difficult but very time consuming class and the exams are far more specific than her lectures. Beware, taking other hard classes at the same time may not be wise.
Most of the people on here don't actually go talk to Dr. A about their grade or how to study for the class. If you actually had a conversation with her you'd know that she genuinely wants to be able to help and is open to constructive feedback that could be improved in general. She teaches a tough course that's 5 credits- it's not meant to be easy
Please please please do not take this class at UCF. To anyone who is pre-med or pre-pa, you'll save your gpa and a LOT of time too because this class is extremely difficult and time consuming due to the weight of the exams. I would agree with other students saying its harder than orgo with Lawrence.
Is this the hardest class of the biomedical sciences major? Probably, but people act as if this class and teacher are the grim reaper which is laughable. Sure, it is annoying that you have to record lectures but by listening to them at least once you're basically guaranteed to pass. Lab is literally cushion and your lowest test score gets replaced.
Much more of a personable and interactive class than Micro, with pre-recorded lectures and a bunch of extra credit assignments. Exams have questions straight from the practice exams (exception being the final which hurt, a lot) but are the rest of the questions were quite tricky. Unlike micro, very possible to scratch out an A with a little effort.
She speaks very fast and rushes through presentations, sometimes leaving 10-15 minutes to spare before class ends. Thankfully, the TAs make mock exams. Select-all-that-apply questions are worth all-or-nothing. Recording & re-listening to lectures is a must. Passing is easy but getting an A requires dedicated studying. First couple exams are easier.
Everything but the homework was proctored which can be a bit tedious, but provided many opportunities for extra credit. Didn't let us record case studies but could take notes on them, however I loved her explanations and wish she'd provide more practice and examples. Would say something would be on the exam but wasn't sometimes.
The lab and lecture do not correlate with each other AT ALL, so you need to learn two completely different topics. I would take this class in the Fall/Spring, not Summer A, unless you want to drown in your textbook. Very tedious lowkey, but glad to be done. The professors are both nice, though. Just be cautious when deciding when to take this class
everyone says this class is impossible but its honestly not. I took this in summer A and I definitely dedicated a lot of time to studying but the class is enjoyable. Dr A is a good lecturer, and she makes the content very interesting. The lab is fun and easily boosts your grade. Very test heavy but if you study the exams are pretty straight forward
The professor's lectures require downloading PowerPoints and listening to audio, which can be hard to follow. There are no subtitles or visuals, making note-taking and understanding, and keeping the focus difficult. Since she's the only option for some bio classes, be prepared and hope she improves the format with videos and captions.
While her lectures are fine. She is extremely rude any time a student asks a question or feedback. I once asked a question and was told it was outside the scope of the class. Turns out there was multiple questions about what I asked about on the quiz and exam. She also locked an assignment before the due date just to screw people over.
I took her for Microbiology and Molecular Biology 2, and I would suggest only taking her if absolutely necessary. She enjoys making things harder for students than they have to be and does not communicate very effectively at all. Trying to get office hours with her is also difficult as she is not very available.
Dr. Ambivero made an assignment for our class due on a certain day. She locked the file containing the instructions exactly 24 hours before. When a student reached out to others for the file, someone (for some reason??) informed Dr. Ambivero of this. She then told us that sharing files will be penalized. Avoid at all costs, she is truly awful.
This class basically sets you up for failure. I am an A+ student but had a hard time with this class only because of the exams. Theres not enough words to explain everything wrong with the teaching style and demand put on students. Professors talks TOO fast, TOO much detail, you cannot distinguish what you need to know from what you dont. p1
p2. The ppt's DO NOT HELP. Nothing from the powerpoint is on the exam,do yourself the best thing you will ever do. DO NOT TAKE HER CLASS,I dont care if shes the only one teaching GO transfer for micro else where. She does not care about feedback either! if you take this class despite all the reviews, you are just giving her money down the drain.
you would think they want students to succeed. BUT NO. When asked for docs previous published to review old modules, they do not allow you to access it. Its crazy! Who gatekeeps study material, this is class that is paid by students to learn. This is not your own personal dictatorship. We are not PHD STUDENTS with one specialization in ONE area.
Dr. A talks super fast and lists out a lot of information, but if you go back over the audio recording and write notes, it is pretty helpful for the exams. However, the exams are purposely meant to trick/mislead you by switching one word, or something like that. I thought she's a good professor, but her exam format is unnecessarily difficult.
I've taken Dr. A for Micro and Molec 2 and did great in both. While lecture is basically required, she is a great lecturer and is interactive with the class. The tests are moderately difficult and the lab, HW, and Extra credit can help out your grade along with replacing one test. She is great, but be sure to read carefully when taking exams.
If you're taking mico with Dr. A, don't let the negative reviews scare you! She may seem "harsh" to some people, but I felt like it was more so tough love. She has high expectations of students cuz she wants them to succeed. Definitely record her lectures and relisten to them as they're very helpful for exams. Also, take micro with easier courses!!
Dr. A is a nice person but her slides are scarce. Hv to attend lecture to understand any of the material. 5 exams, 1+4 were the hardest. Don't listen to the Reddits that said 4 was the easiest. Final was super easy compared to exams. She uses +/- if ur close to the next grade, my 89.93 came out to an A-. Took in summer, cried everyday. Good luck!
Witty and ready to keep you on your feet in her class. Definitely would recommend.
If you are going into PA school and need a good grade. DO NOT TAKE HER. Her class dropped my GPA. The recent reviews cannot be real. Her exams are not EASY every answer could be the answer in a question. Its VERY tricky. Im a straight A student and did not do WELL at ALL. Not only that but her HW are 100+ questions with matching. Waste of time
Sure microbiology is hard but there's a difference between setting up exams to purposely trick and fail students and actually having trouble learning material. She talks at 3x speed and she is just a bad professor.
Flipped classroom and lectures were pre-recorded on powerpoint. Gave lots of extra credit opportunities, one was a multi part assignment. With that assignment you had to complete all parts to get all the EC, but she locked the first one the day before it was due without notice. Exams weren't too bad but she was quite condescending at times.
Talks too fast and she has a chip on her shoulder. She comes off sort of nice sometimes but no consistency in teaching and explaining. I think micro is hard and it needs memory but she's very strict and her exams are tough. Needs to be nicer. Talks about MCAT but she doesn't realize not everyone who takes micro is going to med school.
Avoid at all costs. Will be going to Valencia to take Micro since no other professors teach it at this college. One class feels like 2 with her. IDK why shes trying to be Misses tough science teacher so hard but its overplayed and pretentious. Doesnt care about her students at all. Avoid.
Yeah uh. No. ONLY thing that is good about her is that she speaks clearly, no mumbling. THATS IT. The rest of it is garbage. Exams are very difficult, gives a wonky study guide, speeds thru her slide like no tmrw (you MUST attend and RECORD her lectures to pass). The lab portion carries hard. Please reconsider if you r gonna take her for micro.
Her exam questions don't match what she teaches in class. They require much deeper knowledge than her lectures provide, forcing students to rely on outside sources. Many “select all that apply” items cover content she never mentioned, making her seem strict without preparing us fairly.
Generally moderate difficulty course that has infamy from students that are unable to pay attention during lectures or comprehend the larger picture that is often tested on. Don't pay attention to the fear mongering, very attainable A with effort.
How I got an A: show up to all lectures, just listen and record (voice memos), at home relisten to lecture with powerpoint in front of you and take notes, closer to exam review notes and annotate them with trends/big picture ideas. She's an incredibly intelligent and witty professor who will keep you on guard. Her exams are very tricky. Best wishes
Very fun class and fun assignments! Gives good feedback!
Sure, this class is very difficult, and you will spend a lot of time studying for it if you want a high grade; however, previous students make it seem like it is impossible to do well. Record her lectures, make flashcards, and do not fall behind! Dr. A is also very helpful and nice if you actually talk to her during her office hours.
Dr.A is amazing! Go to her office hours, she's so helpful, always willing to help you succeed in the class. Record every lecture and don't loose site of the big picture. Go back and listen to those recordings with the power points and make your own notes. Pay attention to what she asks on the hw, those concepts it's what you'll be tested on!
Beware, Her expectations are not clear and she is not enthusiastic about teaching. Every lecture I felt like her distain for us grew. Exams are extremely comprehensive. If you do not have your desired grade by the withdraw deadline do not continue. The comprehensive exam is impossibly difficult so there is no real recovery after that point.
Great teacher and learned a lot!
She's a great professor, explains things well, just not fair at all. Her exams are not hard at all, just tricky. I got an 88% at the end and she did not give me a B+, while she states that on the syllabus. Very rude when answering questions. Expects us to read her mind when answering questions that were clearly wrong or misleading.
She's great! The people who complain about this class don't appreciate being academically challenged. Dr. A truly wants her students to succeed and tries hard to help while also keeping the rigor of this 5 credit class. It's not impossible to pass, in fact some questions are super straight forward to help us out. Don't listen to others.
