Ugh!!!
condescending, arrogant, doesn't go beyond the surface, not interested in/supportive of students
No Comments
One of my better professors so far
never taking a class with him again!
This man TAKES ROLL FOR ALL HIS CLASSES! As a psychologist, you'd think he'd have better social skills and maybe some RESPECT for his students. He made it mandatory for his 2 credit seminar to meet during finals week JUST TO HOLD ANOTHER LECTURE.
Good lectures, good choice of textbook. Good overview of the psychology of sex and gender.
he's horrible. lacks social skills, cant lecture at all, omg... i dont even know where to start. this man shouldnt be a provost or a teacher...
Class is horrible. Lectures were ridiculously repetitive/elementary. We get it: racism, sexism, etc. exist and it sucks. Hes pretty anal and shoots down opinions unparrallel to his own. His lectures lack spice.
Some raters criticized his social skills; in fact, he is a bit eccentric and unique, but these are not drawbacks. He is passionate about the material, is caring and supportive, wants to see his students succeed, and knows a lot about psychology.
Prof. Leaper is a thoughtful, quirky, and interesting teacher. I would suggest that students who dislike him are self-righteous, know-it-all types who do not want to open their minds to someone who may be different from them.
might be good with upper div in psych department, but underestimates lower division college ten students. social skills outside of class seem too rehearsed like a textbook and he is can be rude if you don't agree with him.
Campbell is my homie. When he was a guest lecturer in my sex and gender class, I was so impressed and interested in his research that I decided to take independent study w/him which proved to be a fun and valuable learning experience. Additionally, Cam took time out of his schedule to sit down with me and review my career options in psychology with more clarity and sensitivity to my interests than any counselor I've ever had.
Professor Leaper is a great guy overall, he is a bit "unique" as other have put it, but he means well. He DOES want students to succeed and though his social skills are a bit off he is very helpful when necessary. As a student that has worked personally with him for 4 qtrs, he REALLY is an organized, intelligent, dedicated professor that DOES car
Cam is a great instructor. If it was not for his guest lecture in my Sex and Gender class I would never recommend the class to anyone.
If you are a psych student looking into taking classes from him, I suggest relying primarily on the reviews by psych and ind study students. I also took the lower div class that some students have reviewed him based on, and I agree, it was awful. But his psych classes are awesome. Look past those reviews and you will not be dissapointed.
Cam's the man. Very interesting, very informed. I know he's a little serious and dry and well, eccentric, but I enjoyed his upper division course on gender. I would recommend him without reservation for those interested in gender studies and developmental psych.
I laoved Cam's class. He had interesting lectures with a goal, and he genuinely cared about his students. He emailed answers to questions promptly and well, and he even outreached to students he thought would succeed in other psych programs.
When I signed up for this class it was because it was the only one left. I had no desire to take it, but it ended up being my best class that quarter. Cam is passionate, fun, and a good lecturer. He's a fair grader and he's really smart. Read the books, take good notes, and make thorough study guides and you'll be fine.
He was an old-fashioned and dry teacher. Couldn't make up quizzes... even for funerals or plans made a quarter before! His "quizzes" are more like midterms and are super long. DO THE READING- most of the tests are based off of it, and not really his lecture. BORING and pompous. Plays good music though.
In all of the psych classes I have taken, this is the worst. Not because of the dry subject, oh no, because of the dry, sadistic and pompus teacher who gives the most horrid tests ever. I am about to venture in to a 150 tricky, trying to f* u, final, which u must get 70% on or u fail the whole class. Do not take this teacher for research methods.
HORRIBLE! He requires too much work that's really not needed. He gives 3- 50 question "quizzes" that are rediculously hard, and the final is 150 questions. so dumb. He's a horrible teacher. even if you get a perfect grade on all of your work, you HAVE to get a 70% on the final to pass the class. Don't take this class with him!
I felt like I was in high school again with busywork 'lab exercises' and quizzes to babysit me through the reading. Just because it's a lower division psych class doesn't mean the students need to be treated like children.
As someone else said, Cam is the man. The thing to understand about him is that he really cares - about his subject, about his research, about his students - and if you DON'T care then you're going to be on a different planet than he is. If you don't care about your work, don't expect to enjoy his classes.
Yes psyc3 is absolutely horribly boring, and Leaper is very dry but he does the teach the subject well, if boringly. He asks for a lot of work but that's because psyc3 is a pre req for most upper div classes, there's just a lot to learn in research methods. Just do the work, the quizzes are not hard at all if you read the text.
I really liked the class. It is awesome to learn from one of the researchers you read about. I liked the quizzes, they are open book and just help reinforce the info. tests are directly from quizzes. I would love to take another class with Professor Leaper.
learned a lot, do all assignments they really help in understanding, he definitly uses book an class material on test so you need to read
Cam is so knowledgeable and, although this has been said several times, he does TRULY care about his students success. I had a family emergency during the quarter and my grades dropped dramatically; Cam and the TA immediately emailed me offering any help they could give. Attendance is mandatory and so is reading the text- keep up with your reading
Don't take this teacher. The amount of reading and work needed is ridiculous. You had to do a group presentation, hw & quizzes every week, 10-12 page paper, 2 midterms, a final, and have to go to every class & section. Most people also had a lot of problems understanding the questions on the exams. The TA wasn't helpful whatsoever.
great teacher. played really good music at the beginning of class. very clear. very nice.
Leaper was a great professor! I ended up taking the class as pass/no pass because I thought it was going to be a really hard class... and I really regret doing so There were midterm quizzes but they were online and gave us the weekend to do them. The Final was only 100 questions. He really tried helping students out. He is a really nice guy!
This was my second time taking one of his classes. He really is a nice guy! The class was very interesting, but the lectures were a bit long. He really does show concern for his students. One midterm, one final and one project due for this class. I would recommend taking this course to anyone.
I took this class during the first summer session so the course of study was really condensed. The time commitments to the reading and studying for the weekly exams was pretty intense, but totally manageable. Cam is super knowledgeable and really nice and approachable. I would take a class with him again.
I took this class just to get a GE but I did enjoy it and Professor Leaper is knowledgeable and has very well thought out lectures will great video clips and visual aids. Definitely a lot of reading, but he is a great guy.
Leaper was a really engaging and energetic professor.
This class felt like being in high school. He takes attendance at every lecture, there's worksheets and quizzes almost every week to check that you've done the reading. The lectures are extremely easy and basic. He's very arrogant and talks down to you in lecture. He belittled anyone in class who did not share the same opinions as him.
Great professor. Lots of reading, and lots of homework/exams, but all of it really helped me learn the material well. By the time the final rolled around, I felt super prepared. He's a nice guy and really wants his students to do well. Yeah, there's lots of work, but it is by no means difficult. Overall great class/professor.
TOO much reading... but it was easy so it's okay. Midterms were okay too. Just don't fall behind on the reading and review through the quarter for the final. You'll be fine. Kinda. Good prof. I liked his knowledge.
Does not post up slides/notes online therefore attendance is mandatory. There is a lot of reading & assignments but it helps you understand the material. He tries his best to make the class interesting. He's a great professor. Very knowledgeable. Study as much as you can for the final! Don't fall behind.
Leaper is pretty awesome. He really cares about his students. Visit him in office hours, ask about his research and reach out to him! He is one of the best professors to do that with! I wish I could take another class with him!
There is a lot of homework/reading for this class but it is worth while. You must go to lecture and section or you will not pass. Overall he is a cool guy and wants to help his students.
Very good lecturer and the topics are relevant. The tests are a bit hard, but if you pay attention in lecture and ask questions in section it helps a lot. Wish I did that earlier in the quarter. Overall, great class and you get out what you put in.
Definitely my favorite professor and favorite class in the psych department. He was always clear, prepared, organized, and professional. I found the material interesting and accessible. I thought his assignments were fair and the reading wasn't too excessive. I highly recommend his gender development class!
This guy is awesome! Would highly recommend, his slides are crystal clear (and not online - must take notes). He is very passionate about what he teaches. The section is helpful, some tedious work but easy overall. I had so much fun in this class with the research project. Help is always available as you are given the tools to succeed.
Leaper is one of the best teachers I've ever had. He really cares about his students and makes office hours comfortable to go to. There is weekly homework and quizzes on the reading, two group presentations in section, one midterm and a final. He is an inspirational feminist and changed my perspective on a lot of things for the better.
Prof Leaper is one of the best psychology professors I've had. I liked all my psych professors that I've had so far, but Professor Leaper surpasses all the other ones. He is very considerate of students' needs; he is passionate about his subject, and is very fun in lecture! The class involves a lot of assigned reading (no textbook), but interesting
Prof. Leaper's syllabus is 100% enforced, meaning 1) attendance for all lectures + sections are mandatory and 2) powerpoint slides will NOT be posted + you must PHYSICALLY GO TO THE TA FOR HER WRITTEN LECTURE NOTES (which, by the way, is illegible--worse than a 13 year old's handwriting). You better go to class & write quicker than you can breathe.
Leaper is an awesome professor. He is very passionate and engaging. All the bad reviews of him are probably based on the fact that he gives homework out every week. However, the homework is really simple and straight to the point and gets your prepared for the final. Plus no midterm! Take gender and development with him, it's a great class.
Prof. Leaper is a great professor, his class was engaging and he really cares about his students. I recommend taking gender and development with him!
Since this course covers a lot of information, he doesnt have the time to cover most of the information in lectures. I spent a lot of time reading from the textbook, which was interesting but also very intense. The lectures are interesting & usually include examples and videos that clarify ideas in the textbook. Hes very fair for the most part.
Most of his material is based on the textbook and would assign us 2 chapters to read by the end of the week. His lectures would gloss over many of the topics addressed in the textbook. Show up to class, please. If you miss even one of his lectures you won't pass his final. His final is worth 60%. Psych majors, beware.
Professor Leaper is a decent teacher and definitely passionate about psychology. The one thing that upset me was how heavy he weighted tests. Final was 60% of your grade so essentially your entire grade will be what you get on the final. He is not opening to rounding. If you don't test well, do not take this class whatsoever.
My favorite professor. This dude seriously knows what he's talking about and works well in both huge lecture halls and smaller classes. I'd want him to teach my psych for the rest of my life. Weekly quizzes, final quiz, short presentation. He gets to the point and organizes EVERYTHING so that it's simple and understandable. Incredible professor.
At first I was weary of Leaper because he's a bit old fashioned with his language and technology skills, but when it comes down to it he is an understanding professor who wants to see his students succeed. Class had weekly quizzes, required section, final group project, and a final exam that was on canvas.
I saw another person say this, but if you aren't a great test taker, I would advise you not to take his class. He's a great dude and teaches well, but the tests are intense and you literally have to bury your nose into the textbook to pass.
Everything in the class was okay except the tests and quizzes. They were tough, and he did not provide a study guide. The final was the worst. There was too much information. But, if you work hard and stay on top of readings and study everything, you will do well.
If you read the textbook, and start using Quizlet 2-3 weeks before final to review material you will do okay on the final. The professor is kinda boring. The final questions are very similar to the quiz questions so if you review those and do a BUNCH like 100's of flashcards you can pass the multiple choice final. Just lots of memorization!
This class was extremely stressful for me, I didn't feel supported by the professor and TA. For quizzes you have to read a lot to do well on them, the questions are wordy, I spent a lot of time trying to comprehend them. For the paper TA's gave unclear feedback, once you make the changes they want they mark you down for other things.
His class was ok and he (plus TAs) made writing a long research paper bearable. But he's kinda stubborn in his ways and sometimes can be a bit intimidating. He refused to make some accommodations for those who had trouble making it into the final in person. Maybe try taking during a quarter w a diff prof? If he is your only choice though he is ok.
I liked the way he gave his lectures. The grades mostly consisted of weekly quizzes based on the readings and the lectures. attendance was not mandatory but by missing class, you miss a good amount of things that will be on the quizzes. The final was worth 50% of the overall grade, so if you failed the final you failed the class.
The final is 50%, this professor was so defeating, avoid taking Intro to psyc with this professor in general, but especially if you're looking to take a GE
He does not provide notes through canvas, if you want the notes you have to go to lecture. Your grade relies heavily on your test results, he doesn't provide ways to study for these tests so you kind of go in blind. Because your grade is so heavily relied on your test grade, you don't have much room to save your grade in the end.
Final is 50% of your grade, and the only assignments he gives are quizzes and a short essay. Not a lot of homework but doing well on all the tests are super important. Suggest reading all the material and study his lecture notes (not on Canvas, can only receive by attending lectures).
Boring lecture, test heavy. NEVER TAKE HIS CLASS AGAIN
50% final.
Professor Leaper is an excellent teacher. His lectures are honestly really engaging however to receive the notes you must attend lectures. I would say for a GE it's a little rough (making the final 50% of our grade) but if you're genuinely considering majoring in psychology take this class with him.
The teacher is very well versed in his subject, his slides are clear and straight to the point. The lectures are very well explained, he leaves plenty of time for questions and tells you exactly how the course will be from day 1. The only option for extra credit is LSS, which is almost impossible to get into, and the 50% final is stressful.
His class isn't that crazy, I mean it's an introductory psychology course. Surprised I got an A+ since there is no real curve. More than 50% of your grade is in exams. 50% is your final. I liked psychology but the classes were boring until the latter half.
Do not take this class as a GE, the final is worth 50% of your grade. Professor Leaper's quizzes, midterm, and final are lecture and reading HEAVY. Professor Leaper does let you use a cheat sheet for your final and drops your lowest quiz grade. There is also a 1 page "essay" that is required which is not too bad.
You must attend class for the notes as he does not offer the slideshow outside of the lecture. Sign up for tutoring since that's extra credit, and make sure to do the readings assigned per week. The final is 50% and there are weekly quizzes, but he drops the lowest grade from the quizzes overall, and this class is not too bad. Not good for GE thou.
Had good detailed slides and provided a paper of all or most of the information that was talked about in class, but refused to post his slides or record his lectures. Final was 50% of your grade but it's pretty easy as long as you study. Quizzes every week and not allowed to go back once you pass a question. Was a nice professor and taught well.
Wish I would've gotten another teacher but it was fine. Lectures are pointless but he has a weird policy where he won't give you notes or publish slides so going to class is "mandatory." TBH you will be fine if you miss lectures and just do the readings- I wish I would've felt confident skipping more. Final is 50% of grade but easier than quizzes.
His final was 50% of your grade, the rest of your grade is midterms and quizzes. His lectures were good but quite boring, and the only material he gave students access to was printed out notes at every single lecture, which felt like a massive waste of paper. Do not take for an easy GE, try to take a different prof if you can, I wasn't a fan of him
Winter quarter: His lectures were always really good and it helped that he would give note sheets with the main points of each topic at the beginning of each class. I recommend taking your own additional notes. The quizzes and midterm were open note, he allowed a double-sided paper for the final and gave back a few missed points each quiz/test.
Quite knowledgeable about what their teaching for this course. Homework is a bit of a pain (lots of short answer questions) but no exams (except there's MCQ homework which are kinda literally the exams). One major group project throughout the quarter, but its not a lot of work.
I think Prof Leaper, is okay he tends to go too much into detail sometimes which can distract from the topic.I didn't love the structure of the class/notes. There were printed notes which honestly was a waste of paper, and I feel like online notes would've been better. The final is 50% of your grade, its a lot, I would say just try your very best.
i enjoyed lectures and the overall course was not too difficult but the final is worth 50% of grade, so make sure to attend and pay attention in class. midterm and weekly quizzes aren't difficult at all.
I personally enjoyed this class. Final is in person and 50% of your grade which was very stressful and not consistent with the weekly online quizzes or online midterm. Prof leaper seems to care a lot about his students and is very passionate about his work.
Prof. Leaper is a good teacher. He doesn't post his lecture slides on Canvas, and attendance isn't mandatory unless it's the first week or the final, but if you go to class, he'll have printed notes handed out. The final is worth 50% of the grade, and you can have 1 front and back cheat sheet, but still make sure to study the harder concepts.
Loved his lectures! Such a sweet old guy. Very understanding. I wish I had gone to his office hours, but I never had time. Super accommodating and talkative. He answered all of my "what if" questions with glee, awesome guy!
Cam doesn't have the best rep on here, but as someone who read these reviews and was skeptical taking the class, I have no regrets. There's a fair amount of readings, but they're just used to answer the homework. Don't even have to read the whole thing. He is kind, respectful, and has good lectures. I would totally take another class of his!
While Professor can be kind, he tends to be very elitist and unwilling to support students if he does not know you well. The course was easy if you studied but the many assignments were graded harshly, felt like busy work, and were excessively long. He mostly talked about his research, which felt like it limited the course.
