She seems very hard at first, but as the class goes on, it gets easier. I feel like I'm learning a lot. Tests are hard as hell, but she is really nice!
She's very energetic and interesting. You'll never be bored. Her tests and papers are kinda hard, but she is ALWAYS there for help and if you actually do the reading, she'll be able to tell and will cut you some slack. Starts scary, but i'd take her again
She was terrific and always there fore her students. She really knows her stuff. I enjoyed her class alot
She is an awesome person, intelligent prof., and always there for students. When looking for classes to register for she is one of the teachers I look for first. I reccomend her to any student who actually wants to learn and gain in alli at CCSU.
I had her for my FYE class- freshman comp. and I have to say she was the best teacher I've had at CCSU so far-- and I'm a math major who hates English classes... so... you get my drift? Amazing teacher, very helpful during office hours as well.
she seemed intimidating at first but she is a nice teacher. her tests are all fair and her final was enjoyable and not standard- we all acted out a lil play- good class
Dr Barrington was one of the hardest teachers I have ever had. You really need to focus, and she demands alot from her students. At the same time, I learned quite a bit from her class. She loves the subject she teaches, which really adds to the class. She is always there to help her students.
This women assigns so much homework, your grade becomes, not a measure of what you learned, but rather your ability to demonstrate your knowledge under time constraints. I beleive the best learning is done independantly, she provides no opportunuity for this. I also beleive she hates men.
Started as a very difficult class, but if you stay on top and follow syllabus it will be better. helpful in office hours and great woman if you get to know her, would definitely take a class with her again
Great teacher but very hard. Repays hard work and likes it when you go see her. VERY generous on the final grade
I was not impressed with Prof Barrington's teaching method and thought that at times she was rude to certain students in the class.
her class isnt too bad to sit through. as long as u do ur readings and go to class ur fine. shes very lenient with grading. i would take her again.
Prepare to do alot of work and to read difficult plays. However there is no final, just a play that has to be acted out so that is a good opportunity to get your grade up.
Great teacher, really fun, grades easily despite what the syllabus appears to be. Definitely take her
Not understanding at all...had to drop course cause was sick for 3 days..had drs note & everything, would have failed bc of her rules about absenses. She picked on certain students & singled them out. Very unprofessional. Class was a waste of time & didn't learn too much...gave too much work outside of class...would not recommend to anyone.
I loved this class. It remains one the best classes I've ever taken. I would suggest it to anyone who has a love of books. Prof. B. is knowledgable and helpful.
Has class favorites, hard grader, a TON of work between reading and writing assignments. She is also late handing back assignments. Don't take the class unless you have to, the material was interesting, but class discussions could have been more indepth.
kinda rude =(, definitely overrated
She makes everybook that we read really interesting. Good teacher to go to. She has an in-class writing at the beginning of every class, which takes some getting used to but it definitely helps. She explains everything clearly and you leave with a new understanding of what you read. Tests are easy too.
ah, who knows....easy prof...well versed in subject area

What a rude and disagreeable person. Arrogant, nit picky and obsessive, not at all helpful. If you're just taking a GER, stay away, she likes English majors and treats everyone else like crap.
She can be terribly rude and condescending. Seems mad at the world sometimes. Very picky about participation, lots of reading, tough grader. If you are thinskinned or have any ego at all, try someone else in the dept, there are other profs much nicer, easier to deal with and inspiring. Not a great teacher or humanbeing.
Good teacher overall, though she has her disagreeable moments. Class isn't fun if she's in a bad mood. Still, it isn't impossible to do well. Just do the assignments and try to participate in class discussions. She is willing to help students who are struggling with the material, but is brutally honest.
This class made me wish I changed my major. Awful class, super strict with paper formatting rules. DO NOT take this your last semester. Worst class I took in 4 years at Central.
She knosw her stuff but sucks all the joy out of English with her up and down, arrogant and ****y personality. Not always a nice lady. She can have a bad day but you can't. Participation counts way too much. Too bad shes the only prof teaching midievil lit and Chaucer. Change you major or concentration or just suck it up and deal with her moods
If you are looking for a class just to fill credits, this is not for you. This class is a lot of work: reading, writing, and research, but it is well worth your time and effort. The instructor is enthusiastic about the subject and pushes students to exceed average efforts in learning. Those who do reap the intellectual rewards.
She's moody and unpredictable. If you have a thick skin you might not cry at her hurtful comments and condescending attitude. Lots of reading and writing and participation counts way too much. Take her if there's nobody else available but I wouldn't ever again. Not a nice lady sometimes.
worst teacher ever! She expects you to know everything and makes you read old english. Even as an English major when will we ever use this!? Don't take her your last semester... she gives way too much work and gives you bad grades!!!
Did not like this teacher she is to serious and seems to be on a power trip
She a good professor if your really into learning. She knows her stuff but if you're not prepared to turn in a lot of work this is not the class for you. Plenty of reading assignments and papers to turn in. She expects adult behavior, which means everyone turns in their work and is ready to participate or she gets aggitated
Great Teacher, Tough but very helpful. Very intersting.
Very unprofessional. Any teacher that uses the F word in class and is condescending to her students is a joke. Do not take her classes. I agree she is on a power trip 6 out of the 7 days a week. on the seventh day she could surprise you and actually be in a good mood. dont take her classes.
Barrington is one of those profs who kill your love of or interest in English lit. She's way too moody and at times just plain nasty. Not a nice person most days. Sometimes though, she can be nice, but not often enough to ever take her again. Way too much work and if you miss a reading or one of the endless assignments, she's merciless. Stay away.
INTENSE. i have pretty extensive prior knowledge/classes and still only squeaked out a C+ because homework is a MUST! she is meticulous and you must do everything exactly how she wants it! however, if you participate and basically prostrate yourself she will probably cut you a break.
I hated this class. She got rid of our exam and replaced it with an online blog. We were required to go to things that didn't pertain to the subject of our class at all. She was just awful. I'm glad I learned nothing...
Prof. Barrington was tough, but i really enjoyed her class. It is true that there is homework for every class, but doesnt take to long if you have read and comprehended the material. I would def. take her for World Lit. I will take her chaucer class!
did not like the class. was mandatory to attend a boring play. books that had to be read for the class were very boring and were all the same.
The bad comments are from stupid students, which CCSU Eng. Dept. has plenty of. Barrington is brilliant and a great teacher, but if you're a lazy idiot, she's not going to drag you through the course. Not easy at all, but you'll learn more than any other prof. Lots of work, the opposite of what today's student is seeking.
Professor Barrington is pretty heavy-handed on the work side but she lets you decide when you want to hand assignments in so you basically work at your own pace. if ur like me and procrastinate, u'll feel it towards the end. she's actually kind of crude lol and her class is really entertaining. if u are organized, just suck it up and take it!
I loved Barrington! She's a tough professor, and comes on strong and scary the 1st day to weed out the idiots. She's definitely NOT boring, so don't listen to some of the other comments. She helps the students who put forth the effort and are worth her time. She is one of the few professors who has made a difference in my life.
I took Professor Barrington for three classes while at CCSU. I really loved hert classes and her teaching style. Yes thery were hard and there was a lot of work. If you read the syllabus you will do fine. You can fail the class quiet easily if you do not prepare or do your homework. Other wise it's pretty easy. I like her and her classes
Shes energetic and enjoys her work, she is EXTREMLY strict on attendence and EXTREMLY strict on how you cite information and formatting papers. She gives alot of homework and writing asignments which arnt bad because they are typically short. Teaches her class like its the only thing students have to do/study for. Good teacher, but strict and moody
Took her for Chaucer and liked it. She expects a lot since it is a 400-level course. Took her for Brit. Lit 1 and got an A. Lots of work but as long as you keep up you'll do fine. Don't EVER admit you didn't read...she will let you know how she feels. Would take her again if I could. Went to her for a recommendation because she will be honest.
Barrington requires you to work, but you will definitely learn a lot! Her class is fun and if you do the readings and participate in class you will be fine. She is an awesome teacher and has great stories to tell!
She is a difficult but challenging professor. If you are willing to put forth the effort and go to her for help then you will learn a lot from this course because she will help you develop your style. You must attend all her classes in order to be aware of all of the assignments (and there are many) that are due.
Barrington is a sweet and enthusiastic professor. She goes out of her way to help her students and will do everything in her power to make assignments clear. No tolerance for immaturity, so keep your high school attitude at home.
Barrington is the best professor I've had, period. While the course involves a lot of work, it's a number of small assignments instead of a few big ones. She helps explain the material clearly and is open to alternate interpretations of a text - just support your claim. She's bright, enthusiastic, and makes learning an enjoyable experience.
Professor Barrington is one of the best teachers I have ever had. Chaucer is very challenging, but she motivated us to get through it. I don't think I could have enjoyed Chaucer as much as I did with her!
I chose this class solely because Barrington taught it. She loves what she teaches and, more importantly, she knows what she's teaching, too. She can be a harsh grader, but revision is an option for most papers. She's also more than willing to meet with students for any issues they may have, in or out of class. A lovely woman all around.
one of the best professors I ever had. Her class is hard, but if you do the work and participate you will do fine. She is funny and has interesting stories to tell. However, you must come prepared to her class because she expects a lot from her students.
She is very strict. Follow all her guidelines, be very prepared or you get kicked out. i had to buy nine books for her class...all used. she knows what she is doing but you need to listen and participate. she has zero tolerance for laziness, not attending, not doing work, and not having material. i liked her if you get on her good side!
A few prior reviews claim that she's "moody." I found her to be nothing but pleasant and professional. She is extremely knowledgeable and passionate about medieval literature. I learned a lot about Chaucer and his influence on English literature.
One of my favorite professors so far. An amazing professor who keeps the class engaged and makes the readings interesting and fun. Expects a lot from her students, but that keeps you motivated and focused. Great class, I would absolutely take another course with her and would recommend her to anybody else.
Do NOT take this course. Full of herself! Moody!Impossible to talk with
She is /the/ best teacher I have ever had! I am more confident in myself,my ability to write, and read, because of her class. I have never taken so much out of one class before, she is invaluable. I look forward to having her again!!!! I highly recommend this professor to any one looking to set a solid foundation for their life as an English major.
Did not like this class at all. Not only as there far too much work assigned, but the teacher was very condescending. Has a lot of knowledge on the subjects she teaches, but she is far too strict on assignments and expectations. Avoid taking her classes if you can't handle a ton of work. Extremely hard grader as well. Not a pleasant experience.
Very nice person but an awful teacher with an awful teaching style. Work load is alot, makes you participate and attend class. Dont even think about texting or you'll be kicked out. Helpful if you go see her or ask for help but just is very strict has high expectations for her students..they almost seem unrealistic. I wouldnt take her again.
Be at every class with your books, and be ready to learn(work), otherwise take another course, also a tad bit snippy, but she has a nice side too...
By far the best professor I have had at CCSU. She assigns a lot of work but is extremely helpful and I learned so much from her. Would absolutely take another one of her classes.
Professor Barrington was very condescending, and never taught us to write, which was the whole point of a freshmen comp. class. She just gave us work, kicked us out the door, and said good luck (to be fair that’s a bit over exaggerated, but she didn’t help us learn to write at all in my point of view).
Follow directions; you will get carpet-bombed if not! Yes, this instructor will push you to the limit; she may make you feel stupid and English may seem much harder than usual. Barrington knows her stuff. You cannot argue with that. Keep track of assignments, give yourself time with the papers, and ask questions. You won't learn more anywhere else!
She basically just told me how i'm the worst writer ever and never even helped me. You have so much work to do, which doesn't bother me but if its not her level work its an F. She makes you buy a lot of books that you don't use and you have to go to every class or your grade drops a half a grade. Like her as a lady, hate her as a teacher.
All I have to say is, RUN FOREST RUN.
Best English professor I've had at CCSU so far. Yes, she has high expectations. Yes, you will be expected to work hard. As long as you do the assignments, and you do what she expects of you, you WILL become a better writer. I would take her for all by english classes if I could.
Though you will learn in this class, the amount of work is ridiculous! There is no time to focus on anything other than her class. She is a harsh grader and expects perfection. She is also nit picky with her plethora of instructions. You will also have to complete every assignment to pass the class.
Completely rude! Acts like she's the ruler of the universe and entitled to your time outside of class. 14 page syllabus outlines all of her ridiculous policies (step out of the classroom for even a moment, like to use the bathroom, and get marked absent). You have to go to 3 events outside of class time. I work, so I couldn't go and had to drop.
Do you like English? Are you willing to work hard? Prof Barrington is an amazing teacher. Work hard for her, and she will work hard for you. She loves her work and it shows. Don't take this class if you are drifting aimlessly through college. You don't deserve her time. Her classes are for those who actually looking to improve. You will improve.
For English majors. It doesn't and won't get better. Ideal best. She is very passionate, helpful, and insightful. Class discussion are verrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrry intriguing! Also I am a honest person Dr. Barrignton is NOT MEAN. Just respect her and meet with her during office hours when you have any concerns or questions.
Never again
I recommend taking Professor Barrington only if you are an English major that is passionate about reading and writing, otherwise you will feel overworked and very overwhelmed. She is tough.
This was maybe the easiest class I've ever taken, but you have to be willing to read. Every night is over 40 pages, but if you do that, the in-class writings are easy and they're worth more than your exams. Besides that, there is a presentation, a self-reflection paper, and our final was literally a game. Not kidding, a GAME!
Professor Barrington is a very nice person but not the best teacher. She has a hard time getting to the point. At the beginning of every class there is a writing assignment so if you don't understand something I advise you to ask questions beforehand because you will write about what you read before you get a chance to discuss it.
Professor Barrington is a dream for English majors. Other than that, you might have some problems with the class because of the amount of reading you have to do. Class discussions were wonderful and insightful, the in-class writings helped to concretely form ideas about the texts, and the final was super easy. In general, she's awesome.
Professor Barrington is one of my favorite Professors at CCSU. You have to work very hard to get an A but if you do the work, it seriously pays off. She truly helped me develop into a better writer and reader and I feel more than prepared to take on my upper level English courses because of her class. She is so caring and really outstanding.
Professor Barrington is one of the best teachers I've ever had. She can be strict and she'll challenge you to do your best. She genuinely wants all of her students to succeed. I was once having a hard time in life, and she sat me down in her office where she listened and comforted me like a mother, and helped me see a way forward. She's the best!
She's told me several times how I'm incompetant at writing, my sentences are awful etc. Despite that, I walked away with a B. You would think she's the actual head of the department, but she just pretends like she's that important. Be ready to study extra hard / pull all nighters if you want a good grade. She's very tough in the worst way. Hate her
Professor Barrington is a great professor. Her class was tough, but she is a professor that understands this. She pushes students to improve their writing, and makes the class environment comforting enough for students to not be afraid to go to office hours. Take advantage of office hours for papers! Work hard in her class and you'll get an A :)
Withdrew from this class with the quickness, the syllabus told me everything I needed to know, having to ask to go to the bathroom, no laptops allowed in a class that requires a lot of writing is an insane and stupid request. This isn't the 80's. First day of school and gave students no time to find your class before locking the door. Nope.
If you want to become a better reader and writer and grow an appreciation for literature you wouldn't touch in your lifetime- take this course. Professor Barrington keeps the class entertaining, engaged and genuinely cares. Take her class. Trust me!
Professor Barrington was one of the best professors I have had here at Central. She is very educated on the topics we read, and she always made sure everyone in the class understood what was going on. Some complain about her "old-fashioned" style of teaching, but it actually really helped engage the class into staying focused and having discussions
Good luck is all I have to say. If you aren't one of her favorites have fun getting through this class. She is disrespectful and will make you feel like you're incompetent if you don't say exactly what she's looking for. I wouldn't take a class with her again.
You never know what you're going to get with this professor. Some days she can be nice, and other days she can be very rude towards the students for a mistake such as not printing out the reading. Also requires a 1 on 1 in which I was told "I do the bare minimum". Waste of time for that feedback.
I don't know who rated her a 5 lol. all I can say is don't do it to yourself. She will make you feel like you are incompetent never met someone so bipolar. I DREAD going to her class. emailing her outside of class if you don't follow her "email guidelines" she won't answer your question but rather send an email saying to go look at the guidelines.
WAY too many mandatory outside events. I enjoyed her style of teaching (as bipolar as she was) but as an english major, I think she's a hell of a resource to anyone looking to really hone in on their abilities. Yeah, she's tough, but If you spend a bit of time on the resources she gives you, should be a breeze. Maybe. Idk she really liked me?
I absolutely loved Professor Barrington. Give her respect, come to class on time and put effort into your work and she will love you. She is open to discussions and hearing different perspectives, and actually encourages it. She is available for her students and set us up for success in my opinion. Highly recommend
I bet the people who gave her 1 ratings were unprepared and got called out. It's your own fault. Come to class prepared and engage with the professor and your fellow students. It isn't difficult at all. She's a no bullshit kinda gal and I love her!
Professor Barrington is my favorite English professor that I've ever had. I was initially scared off by her no-phone policy, but she makes the classes engaging to the point where the hour was flying by. You have to read the text outside of class and show up prepared, but if you respect her she will respect you. Highly recommend.
Professor Barrington is awesome. I have had so much fun in her class this semester and she cares about each and every student she has. I started the semester not giving the effort I should have and fell behind, she and I met and she made it clear she knew I was capable. Ever since I have succeeded in her class and she gave me the tools to do it
Prof Barrington is one of few I give a pass for being strict- it's clear that she does it bc she actually cares and not for a power trip. Class was always fun bc she found ways to make it interesting. In my midterm meeting, we discussed more than just her class & I still think about what she said. p.s. u can just skim the texts if ur smart enough
As a person who has never read an entire chapter ever, this professor made every single class fun and engaging. The formula was pretty simple. Read the assignment before class, write a thesis statement, support it with evidence from the book, and participate. I didn't always do all 3 things, and that's why I finished with a C. I was just burned out
Walking on eggshells is the general atmosphere in Professor Barrington's class. Some days she is happy, and on others, you need to wait for the hurricane to pass. She gives pop quizzes like we're back in high school and grades assignments one by one in class. In-class writing almost every class. I was exhausted from her class—no more.
For a class I was dreading, Professor Barrington made it enjoyable. She made sure everyone understood what we were reading, and made the classroom a very active and engaging environment. Her teaching was a breath of fresh air. The more effort you and your classmates put in, the better you will do in her class.
This professor would smile when she waited to tell a student that she should withdraw from the class. I suggest you obey her and do everything she wants!
Professor Barrington is one of the best. You can tell she is knowledgeable on Chaucer, and isn't strict about having perfect translations in class. She is open to answering any and all questions, is light-hearted, and establishes a welcoming classroom environment. As long as you read and try, you'll do great in this class. Would 100% recommend.
Professor Barrington is one of the best at CCSU! she is very knowledgeable and is fun to work with in class. Just do your work and you'll be fine. She is so fun, especially when the whole class participates. Take the Canterbury Tales class with her...You Will NOT REGRET IT!!!!!
