tough teacher, but for a good reason. knows what she is talking about
subjective marker, fails many people, self-centered
biaaaaaaaaaaatch of a course
For the entire semester, she acted as though she wanted to be reading on a beach

she didn't teach anything all semester, just acted smug, and unapproachable
Really cruel comments on work. Yuck.

Great prof if you want to work hard. Wait till you whiners try to get a job!
Extremely helpful and easy to talk to. Helpful feedback. I learned a lot.
Candace is a good listener and is very helpful if you show a willingness to work. She is a tough marker but very fair
terrible, wtich of a woman
You will very quickly become academic mud beneath her steel toed boots.
doesnt deserve her reputation. the entire class sits at the back of the room cos theyre scared of her. Fair and good teacher if youre willing to work. dont go to college if you arent. shes not the best i had, but certainly not the worst
she's hard.. but you'll learn. i took the class to help me with my other classes... and it really worked. she's fair.
great, helpful, you will actually learn something if you work hard
Tough marker (she admits it right off the bat.), and a little intimidating. The more I approached her, the sweeter she became. She's actually really cool, and helped me a lot.
Tough but very fair. If you work hard she will notice.
Yeah, she's tough, but isn't that the point?
Terrible teacher. Half the class drops because she fails them on the first assingment. Insults the class and grades people like its a fourth year class and then wants to pretend that she's your friend at the end of it all.
EEEVIL teacher ... i'll admit i'm not the literature type, but it would be nice if the prof didn't string you up and insult you when you ask for help. Plus I didn't realize her interpretation of readings is the only correct one :S
A bitter, lonely woman who has a difficult time concealing the smug grin on her miserable face as she hands a student a failing paper. The second time I took English 160,(with a different teacher),I got an A using the same assigments that Candice failed.
I got an A ONLY because I already knew how to write. I learned ABSOLUTELY NOTHING from this course which is %200 less than I learned in Engl 050 and 080. Sorry Candice - your class is just series of difficult tests with little or no teaching.
Horrible teacher!! she embarrasses people in front of the class,no matter how hard you try and apply yourself, there is nothing you can do. she trys to be fair, but her idea of interpritation and how to write a sentence is the only way.
She has a dry sense of humor and a love of the subject. Not necessarily an 'easy' instructor, but willing to help and pretty laid back.
An intelligent woman that has trouble grading papers. You will not find a more difficult 2nd year instructor. Didn't learn anything new. Was never very approachable, and failed to inspire me to write. You must conform to HER writing style!
DO NOT take her class!!! she is totally evil and unfair. yes, the point is that college should be challenging, but she is insulting and unapproachable. a bad bad woman.
Candace was a great teacher. She inspired me and rewarded me for my hard work. If you do the readings and come to class prepared you will get more out of it. Slackers: stop blaming teachers for your failures.
My mom told me that If I can't say anything nice then don't say it at all
Marking style verges on rude. Her choices of literature are dry.
The "Dragon-Lady" of Lansdowne does nothing half-way. Only those with a firm grasp of grammar and the ability to spell (or willingness to live with a dictionary) need apply; slackers beware.
I found Candice to be unclear in her description of and interpretation of material. She also had astronomically high expectations of her students writing.Even students who usually excel in English are in for a rude awakening as she is impossible to please.
Appears kind and excited to teach, but is really unapproachable. There was little or no instruction as to what she expected from the students. I did not learn anything new from this class and found the reading material to be boring.
Candace is not only a very intimidating instructor, but woman as well. She is extremely intelligent and really knows her stuff though. Tough marker, brutally honest, outspoken, and if you hate Shakespeare... watch out!
worst teacher ever
Talks, at length, about her lunch before class before entering into literature discussion. Brutal marker, with rude comments, and almost unreachable expectations. Nasty, nasty woman.
Candace appears to be interested in teaching, and talks at length about how much she loves her job. The funny thing is, she is terrible at it. The was easily the most boring and least engaging class I have ever taken. DO NOT TAKE HER CLASSES.
Hard, but a great teacher. I found that when I bothered to ask for it she was very helpful. She's highly opinionated but willing to listen to others' interpretations.
Candice is a published author. She expects her students to write as a published author, which is ridiculous for a first year English course. She has unreachable expectations, and does not give helpful criticism. I went from a B+ in English 150 to a D in her class. Participants be ware!!!

She was constantly late for class. She was extremely disorganized and arrogant. She is a brutal marker and taught us nothing all term. She simply talked about herself and problems with her mother. Shocking, I am still in shock over what an awful teacher she is!
Candace is a pompus woman who choses favorites and give grades accordingly. She is insecure and hides behind her books. She is very unaproachable although she claims otherwise. I had an A+ in 250, and she gave me a D. This class is not worth the money nor the blow to the ego you are sure to recieve.
Candace is the laziest teacher I have ever met. Contrary to her job description, she does not teach, but instead lets us, the class, figure out for ourselves what it is we need to be taught. She needs to stop hiding behind her ethnicity and inflated ego, get off her ass and do her job. Avoid her.
This was the worst class, "taught" by the worst prof EVER! I learned absolutely nothing from her and would much rather be working on something of value than listen to her droning. She provides no motivation or interest. A waste of time and money. Avoid at all costs!
YOU SUCK. This lady fuc&%$ me over. DO NOT enroll in her class unless you are a published writer. I went from A- in 150 to D. She fails to realize that this is an INTRODUCTORY course and marks your work as if your working on your masters. WORST TEACHER IVE EVER HAD IN MY LIFE!!!!! ABORT ABORT !!!
She is a flake. In the first two weeks of class, she cancelled three without notice. Unprofessional, arrogant, and self-absorbed... all she seems to do is whine about her own life and force us to learn this course on our own. A tough marker and a horrible teacher.
Despite popular opinion, Candace is a formidable women and an excellent teacher if you take time to ask for help. I found her to be insightful and extremely inteligent. I find no fault in simply holding students work to an extremely high standard. We have to learn some time. Take at own Risk Tho

despite what everyone says, when I took this class I was expecting the worst I came out with a high grade. I liked her, you just have to do the work properly, I didn't even attend alot of the classes and I still did well. Better then most of the English profs at Camsoun and smarter too.
I took 3 english classes with Candace three years ago. Thanks to her teaching I went on into the honour english lit. program at UVIC. Her classes, and the texts I read in them have stood me in good stead for my current studies. Candace is a good professor for any student who is actually interested in English Literature.
Arrogant.Acts like she's the authority on every moral topic and goes on long tangents during class then wonders why we're behind schedule.Good class to zone out in tho. I'm a bit of a keener with an A+ average and in this class I got about 80. Expects everyone to be an english major even though this is a required course. Brutally chastizes slackers
by far the worst teacher ever, drop this class at all costs
Dr Fertile is an excellent teacher of English lit. Her reading lists are sensitively and imaginatively chosen. Actually, they are inspired. Though her teaching style may be a little eccentric, if you open-up you'll learn A LOT. If you have an interest in English Lit, take her classes. If not, stick to a non-teacher like Steve Good.

Dr. Fertile is a wonderful teacher. Yes, she is a difficult marker, but she loves what she does and has high expectations.
went from loving english to hating it
This was a hard class.
Candace fertile is an excellent teacher. She has high expectations for her students, and is a highly effective teacher. If you truly like English Lit, and want to learn, take her class. It will stand you in good stead for future lessons, and given the quality of her readings, for life in general. Having finished my english lit hons degree, I know
Not a difficult class but be prepared for mood swings and inconsistencies - don't hand in anything late or you'll get a zero, even if she says otherwise. By the end of the semester, less than half of the class showed up for lecture.. that's not a good sign!
excellent teacher. She's tough, intelligent and deserving of respect. You will get out of this class what you put in. You just need to make sure you're literate and can write essays before you begin.

I liked her class a lot. She has a great sense of humour, and you will learn a lot.

Candace Fertile is one of the best teachers I have had in a four year English Lit. (Hons). If you are genuinely interested in the study of literature, take her classes. If not, do something else.
She might be the worst teacher I have ever seen. I had her in summer classes, and I hated every second of it. She is cocky, arrogant, and likes to belittle people infront of the class. She isnt all that smart, but she thinks she could teach God a think or 2 about english. I dont recommend her to ANYONE. Do Not Take This Class.
Dr. Fertile is an excellent teacher. Take all the classes she teaches. (She can be tough, but she is fair).
Candace is definately a highly educated women. Problems are: a) she tends to get off topic b) sometimes the class in turn gets off topic (bye bye to concentration) c) her teaching style is boring (ex. "Sally runs." who cares about Sally? ) d) she is not an easy marker whatsoever! Why do you think out of 30 people sometimes only 9 remain by the end?
I would rate Candace Fertile as a superior instructor. She is a wonderful story teller and extremely knowledgeable in English Literature. Camosun College and the students are blessed to have such an educated instructor. She is the best!
I took one of her courses for a semester. Don't make that mistake. She "wrote the text book" so she must be soooooo much more correct in her marking.
Be prepared to do poorly if you have your own ideas. She's very single-minded. She doesn't even really tell you what she expects of you to begin with. She won't tell you why you're wrong if she believes you are. The classes aren't very interesting and she tends to single people out.
Candace Fertile is the best English Prof i've ever had. She is an all around amazing and brilliant person. She marks fair and expects you to learn something from her class. Attendence is mamdatory but her lectures are mentally stimulating and she offers wonderful insight into a varity of topics. If you have problems she is approachable.
Prof is very self focused, is not very clear about assignments and feedback is next to useless.
I enjoyed the classes and the content but Ms. Fertiles marking was totally biased and her attitude was very cocky. I got an A in Eng 150 and after two assignments was getting 50% so I dropped the course.
Don't go into this class thinking that you will learn anything. If you don't understand Shakespeare then don't take the class. Class was boring but it makes you have to read plays that you may never had. Be prepared to get a bad mark on your first essay because she shows no mercy in marking.
not worth your $$.
incredibly hard marker, not clear what she expects in writing, biased to certain opinions
She was an editor of the textbook. Beware. A student in other lit and eng classes. C+ essays handed back. She does not tell you what she is looking for in her essays. Comments aren't always helpful. It's the same as Lit12 but marked much harder + a book (Love Medicine). Seems nice enough thought she was crazy on second day. Loved substitue teacher.
Candace is a good teacher, her grading is critical but fair. If you argue a point well, she won't dock marks if she disagrees. BUT you need to get an early start on assignments, take lots of notes, & put serious effort into your work. You can't expect to do your essay the night before and get an ok grade. Interesting woman, & enjoyable class!
Worst teacher ever! Needs to get over herself, arrongant and does not know how to teach. Likes to embaress the class, and think she knows everything because she was one of the editor for the lit. book. I got a A in 150 from pitman, and I had to work my ass off for a b-. Waste of time she won't teach you anything!
Could talk about herself the whole class, reverted teachings back to personal experiences, which had nothing to do with the teachings.
Handing in the 4th essay (Research Essay), I got it back with a 20% (past 3 essays were 75%/75%/75%). I agree, a BRUTAL marker, and is ABSOLUTELY biased. Learn nothing during class time. BUT, if you want to learn, ask for help, she will not refuse . Also, use office hours to get her to explain EVERY essay. Dont go from a 70/75% to a 60% like me.
Fantastic!!!
A strong woman who articulates in a strong manor. The class setting is in no way comfortable. She hands out a legend when she returns papers and she is a very tough marker
Worst teacher you could ever get. Awful marker, if you want to pass English 150 I suggest not taking the course with her. She talks about herself too much, class is pointless. Marks papers as if it were 4th year course. Doesn't actually teach you annnything.
not good
very bright, interesting woman. expects a strong effort, and is very approachable for advice/explanation/guidance. seems that most people rating here expect something for nothing when it comes to their grades. students who WANT TO LEARN will be rewarded - students who already know it all, or would rather whine, will not.
HORRIBLE TEACHER!!! Very hard marker. Marks Eng 150 papers as if they were 4th or 5th year papers. She is not helpful at all. If you get her make sure you go to every class. She will start to hate you if you don't show up for ANY reason.
She is a hard marker but her class is intresting and the book she picked in great. If your prepared to work its a good class if not stear clear.
Interesting personality-wise, but HARDEST PROF EVER! If you get B's in high school ENGL, you'll prbly fail this class
Self-described grammar nazi. Entire class astounded by their terrible grades. Taught nothing about how to write an essay, but sure complained about mine a lot.
Extremely unapproachable and will completely embarrass you if you ask for the slightest bit of clarification. I admit her marking it fair, but if she actually would teach us how to write instead of talking about random subject, maybe we could understand what she wanted us to do. Do not take her if you are planning on asking your professor for help.
Candace made me feel like an idiot every time I stepped foot into her classroom. She is condescending, unclear, and she grades as though she were editing the New Yorker. She would say things like "You can try new things" and then give a failing grade to half the class. Wasted time talking about her cats. I would never take a course from her again.
Teacher is Extremely hard marker for first year college, and some what helpful during lecture.
The comments on here almost stopped me from taking Canadian Lit with Candace.I expected the worst, but actually I found her teaching style to be exciting, refreshing, interesting and challenging (in a good way)! As an ENG major, I've achieved my highest grades to date from Candace. You are missing out if you don't take a class from her!
Unhelpful, condescending and harsh.
A challenging course. I thought I knew more than I did (very successful in ENG150), but Candace and her teaching brought me up to where I *should* be at the university level. I buckled down and listened to what she was saying in class. I consider this course - and the hard-work I put into it - a well-earned welcome to post-secondary education!
I'm down.
One of the worst teachers I have ever had in my life. Never take a course from her. Avoid her at all costs. She is rude and condescending, and marks like your handing your PhD. thesis.
She is very knowledgeable in her subject, but she tends to play favorites in her class. If she does not like you, the class will be hard for you. I was one of the students she did not like and I found her to be very demeaning. My final essay was worth 40% of my mark and she gave me a zero for forgetting to cite my references within the essay.
Overall, I'm glad I'm done with that course and actually made it out alive. She tends to have her favorites which was discouraging. She was extremely harsh especially when it came to essays. I'm so gald I've gotten that course over with and never have to take it again.
Tough marker, but very very clear on what she expects. My essay grades improved as did my writing ability as I went through the course and I ended up with a grade I'm satisfied with. I didn't find her mean at all, and her demeanor was quite approachable. If you show up and try she is willing to help. Taking another course with her.
don't do it. She's condescending, rude, and opinionated. killed english for me. and she picks favourites. didn't learn a thing.
HARD MARKER!!!
Candace is quite opinionated. She says attendance doesn't matter but those with higher attendance have higher marks. I find she's a very fair marker. The classes are super easy and if you put the effort in on your papers your mark will reflect that. She doesn't teach anything but if you have a question she can explain the answer really clearly.
I have very mixed feelings. At times, she is condescending and rude, and at times, she is friendly and seems to really care about her students. I wouldn't recommend her, but some seem to like her quite a bit.
Horrible. Absolutely Horrible. She is doing a report on attendance for her classes, so if you don't show up, don't expect good grades. She will fail you for disliking her opinions. She is the worst teacher I've ever had. She made me want to quit writing.
Candace is a nice women and is well travelled.....the problem with her as a teacher is that it seems like she does indeed pick favourites. Hard work does not always get you anywhere.
This woman has nothing relevant to say or teach. She turned Creative Writing Non Fiction into Intro to Composition 2.0. She has absolutely no creative spark whatsoever, and only cares about grammar and punctuation. You are only graded on grammar and punctuation, nothing towards creativity. Horrendous woman. Steer away from Candace Fertile.
I took this class as a fun elective. I was looking to improve my writing ability and get feedback on my creativity. Candace is a tough marker, and expects a lot from her students. She is not for those who want an easy A or like to argue. However, my writing ability and grammar are both much better for it. Quick email responder and helpful feedback
really hard marker, even if you work hard and get help, it doesnt matter. didnt teach anything, just restated the homework, which was pointless to do if she was going to spend all class doing it. wouldnt take her again, had to drop the class because 1 bad mark on an essay worth so much cost a good grade! hard marker even though she says shes fair
Candace was a VERY difficult marker. I hate it how she gives you a random percentage without giving you anything to work on. Nice woman though.
Interesting anecdotes, bad teacher. Taught no actual skills. Feedback ALWAYS negative, nonconstructive, vague, and of dubious accuracy. Expectations unreasonable. Commented on a classmate's grades in front of the class on two occasions, and made a "project" of him. Arrogant manner. Left with same skills as when I began class. Utter waste of time.
I'm convinced that any positive comments here regarding Candace were put here by Candace herself. She is a terrible teacher, gives useless feedback and is just plain rude at times. I will never take a class with Candace again.
When an entire class fails an essay, it should be obvious that either her expectations are unreasonable, or that she is not providing you with the skills necessary to excel in her class. She absolutely loves the textbook she makes you use, because guess what? She wrote the damn thing. Oh and she's a miserable human being.
While Candace is a difficult marker, she is an interesting and well travelled woman who you can gain a lot from. I worked hard, I got an 'A'. Don't be intimidated because she can be helpful, she just isnt going to hold your hand through her course
This is the only teacher I've ever felt the need to warn student's about. Please don't take her class.
Candace is a great English teacher. She promotes thought process through sharing her life experiences and questioning in the classroom. Yes, Candace does take your attendance. She may be a little biast on your marks with attendance. It's English, what do you expect? She will warn you that there is a direct correlation between attendance and ma
I am a "mature" student and had to upgrade courses. I wouldn't say Candice is an awful teacher, but I will say that she is a TOUGH marker especially if she does not agree with your analysis on literature. My major upset: it is quite clear what her "religious" views are. I was quite offended at times.
The majority of the class failed the first essay and by the end of the term less than half the class was left. Candace should not have tenure-ship! She brings her baggage to class and makes sure everyone who crosses her path leaves with some of their own. She will brutally sodomize any sense of joy one could get from Lit.
She often confuses English class with philosophy. It's disappointing, paying tuition & spending time in class only to learn what your English prof's beliefs are. Do everyone a favour, avoid this highly unprofessional professor, & she?ll get to better hear the echoes of her own idiotic preaching off empty classroom walls.
English was my best course prior to this class. I've been very turned off from english now. She marks extremely hard, and has no guidlines to what she's marking you on. I would never take a class with her again. Don't even take the risk!
Short story: HARD marker... Long story: If you have sollid attendance and get her to go over your papers before final draft, you can do decent (B avg). She will always slam you on your first essay. If you want a good GPA (A or higher) go somewhere else!!
Due to my experience in high school (long ago), I was CRINGING at the thought of having to take English Lit again. However, Candace made the course AMAZING. She's brilliant, passionate and opionated. A hard marker, but well worth it.
If you are good at english before you take this class you will do okay, if not then you will fail. Very unclear, didn't learn anything. Class was one huge discussion on random topics. It was down to half a class after the first essay. Horrible. Avoid
Don't take this class unless you have a solid foundation in writing essays and proper grammar use. Unfortunately, this professor doesn't teach anything about writing skills, which is the reason for taking this course.
Worst teacher i have ever had. Assignments were very unclear. When i politely asked Candace a question about works cited she was very bitter and condescending and down right rude. Candace is also the hardest marker iv ever had. I cant believe this lady teaches. I wouldn't wish this teacher upon my worst enemy.
Candace was a great teacher. She was very clear and organized which I appreciate greatly after meeting some of my new teachers. If you go to class and follow her instruction you will do well. It was not easy but if you read the material and write clearly you will do great! I appreciate that she is there to teach and not babysit. If you want an easy
Not especially engaging and she used her teaching position to push her own opinions while squelching other's. She seemed like a hard marker at first, but as with most english teachers if you simply write what they want to read you will do well. She wants you to write as if you understood the topic's deeper concepts, so focus on these for a good mar
I took this course in its accelerated format during Spring term. I found Candice's classes very interesting. Tonnes of writing, but then this is Advanced Compostion. It was a great way to pass an Island spring. The secret is to be engaged, embrace the workload, and have fun! Interesting teacher.
Very resistant to question via email r in person. Extremely unclear expectations and really high marking expectations. She told our class " there wasn't enough red ink in the world to mark our essays I pencil" and that we " couldn't even write proper sentences". I got 60% on our first essay after 2 appointments with the writing centre.
Although she engages one in the material and is clearly passionate about it she lacks good teaching skills. Additionally she failed our entire classes first essays stating she expects third year university quality in a first year university course. Do not take this course with her if you want to keep a good GPA.
Just found out about this site and I wouldn't believe anything on it. Candace is interesting, human, passionate and a great teacher. As for your marks, as long as you apply yourself with a little effort its fine. This isn't highschool, get over it.
If you are not an A student in English do not take her class! I have always been an A or B student in English until now, I received a D in her class... She is absolutely the hardest marker I have ever had. She stated in our first year English class that she expected perfect essays. She is also very rude if you ask for help or ways to improve.
She's great. Strict and hard core and I like it. Have her for a creative writting class too. If you like structure you'll love her.
an extremely hard marker. especially for a 100 level course. I you are not already fascinated with eng, you will feel broken, as a human being. not fun or enjoyable or even inspiring in any way.
Avoid if possible - narcissistic, unecessarily rude, and constantly goes off on tangents completely irrelevant to the class. This makes it very difficult to take notes or to prepare for an exam. Consantly talks about herself and is totally unhelpful.
Extremely unclear as to what was expected for assignments. Unapproachable and reluctant to help when asked. Avoid her.
Unfortunately when I picked the class, the teachers name was "TBA", I now know why. She returned our first essay and proceeded to tell the class that most of us failed and that we'd have to write a new paper in order to get a better grade. With 10 years of abysmal ratings, it's clear the problem is with her, not the students. Avoid at all costs.
Unclear what she wants, 0useful feedbacks on essays. If you want to learn sth, she is def the worst teacher out there for she does not teach at all. She's just living in her own world where she is proudly a Ph.D. However, if you are already a good writer, she will be the one to challenge. The avg in the class is around C+. Just don't pick her.
Amazing teacher! Very helpful and easy going. Most of my classmates struggled, but put no effort in. EDIT YOUR PAPERS LIKE CRAZY! Even if she says "rough draft", give it your all. Classwork and readings were very enjoyable, loved her as a prof
Extremely hard
Candice is a straight shooter. Some people don't like that, but I find it refreshing. She doesn't coddle her students, but challenges and encourages the students to think for themselves.
Extremely hard marker. Very condescending. After a 50% mark on first story, got 60% on my second and was told "Its a step up from last time", after I had done everything she asked for. DONT TAKE HER CLASS. Avoid her at all costs.
Her comments given are vague and unclear, yet she does not specify what would count as a A+ paper to her. She marks extremely low. The assignments given would be something experienced or professional writers find challenging. I have been writing for a very long time and my mother is an english professor. She agrees that Candace is unreasonable.
I see how some of the other students feel about strictness and unreasonableness, but I took the time to use her notes, markings and discussed with her about what it means and I genuinely feel like my creative writing has improved! although,(and obviously) I still need to work on punctuation and she is not afraid to point it out ever.
Definitely not a class I would recommend. She comes off in the beginning as friendly, but when it comes to marking or giving out assignments, she is very unclear and often disagrees with you. Even if you try your hardest, it still isn't good enough for her. This isn't high school anymore, but for Candace, this isn't even college. Do not take!!!
Candace is a very dedicated teacher, and is clearly passionate about literature. So am I, so I thoroughly enjoyed her Can Lit class! Class was discussion-based. Assignments were 3 essays on works/authors of your choice, and you pick your own topic. I would recommend this class for people who love reading, discussing, and writing.
hard marker, not helpful
Candace is a good teacher and one of my favorite profs. She is very passionate about literature and made it interesting and fun. She is a tough marker but also fair. She tells you exactly what she expects out of your essays and marks accordingly, so if you miss classes you might miss key pieces of information about your essays.
She'll tell you at the beginning of this class that she won't judge you on what you choose to write about (zombies, aliens, your grandmother, ect) and this will be a lie. Very, very picky and her marking shows it.
Yes she is a hard maker. However she is also very helpful. I could talk with her any time about paper's and she would let me know how on track I was. She made me a better writer, and therefore a better student. she does tend to go off topic, but pay attention when she is on topic for the test are based on what she says in class.
Awful. I Didn't learn anything from her. Her lectures had no real structure, I actually had to look up lectures on Hamlet from YouTube to learn anything substantial. Class barley prepares you for exams, but if you don't go you'll definitely fail. Took a first year course, but she grades papers like fourth year. Avoid her like the plague.
I highly discourage anyone from taking a class with this prof. Very unclear criteria, and extremely difficult marker. I am an A student and earned 61% on my first essay for simply using "too many adjectives" & for "using a thesaurus". Candace is a nice lady but definitely does not mark like a first-year English instructor. Here's your warning!
I really enjoyed this class. Candice gave us a lot of freedom in our choices of what we wrote on. She's interested in the world around her and that translates through her passion of language. She is a very direct person which I appreciated. She's a little quirky but it's a part of her charm.
She seemed very thoughtful and helpful. Really interesting assigned papers.
Took ENGL151 as a summer class so it seemed a bit rushed but she was a great teacher. Very interesting subject matter
horrible.
English isn't my favorite subject, but Candace made it bearable. Very helpful in class and during office hours. Assignment criteria was always clear. Compared to the horrible teachers I had to deal with in high school, I've found the English profs at Camosun to be very helpful.
Candace can be a hard marker, and she may not tell you directly what will give you an A+, but if you pay attention to her class, and engage, you will do well. She will give you exactly what you earned on an assignment (not afraid to say I deserved the 50%'s I got). An extremely smart, classy, and knowledgeable woman, and a really nice person.
Great teacher, and one classy individual
Candace makes you work for it, I would not take her classes if you aren't willing to work. If you try and participate that's all she cares about. Don't expect to break an A with her easily though, she makes you work for every mark.
She's a tough marker, but she doesn't assign bad marks without reason.
Don't take her classes. Day#1: "I don't have to agree with your position on a paper to get a good mark but the argument must be strong." Comments on paper: you make some good arguments but I think you should have focused on the relationship between...
I took her creative writing class for fun. I like writing. The class consisted of long lectures that were almost completely irrelevant to the subject material. There are no take home project aside from major stories. She was unclear to any inclass questions and found finding grammatical terms "fascinating". Don't do it. Boring.
Candace was the kind of person where your first impression is totally inaccurate. She was incredibly strong in her reasoning and really quite strict, but was surprisingly kind. That being said, her expectations were REALLY high, and marked harshly. I learned a lot from her though, and would recommend her because of just how much she taught me.
She's not the type of professor you'd want to meet if you like skipping classes and slacking off. Info from course is heavily lecture-based, but that's the beauty of Candace's classroom. I got so much out of her course. She's one of the most sincere, intelligent, lovely profs I've had the pleasure of learning from. Requirement for course? Passion.
Unhelpful, critical to the point of destructive.
Contradictory when it comes to grading (for example, marks as "needs explanation" for shorter sentences, then "too wordy" for longer sentences). I have taken three other English courses at this college and received A's and high B's in all, but this course was the only one I have almost failed. The entire grade was based on two exams & two essays.
Candace introduced herself as loving to teach English, it did not appear that way. This asynchronous class had no teaching, only directions for readings in an online textbook along with submitting two essays in a seven week period, along with two timed exams. Hopefully the in-class sessions are better.
The class itself was easy and I liked the content we studied. The feedback she gave to me and other people on assignments a lot of the time did not make sense. The test was not on anything we really studied in class. Overall the class was fine but I wish the test was more focused on what we were learning in class.
Candace is a very old-school traditional teacher. She is a harsh grader and will grade you more rigid on the work compared to other instructors. While being direct with her communication style, which I appreciate, and a good sense of humour, I enjoyed learning the content within the course. No devices in class. Show up and participate.
I admit, at first, I did not like her. Be ready to work hard for your grade, you will be rewarded if you do. I came to enjoy her old-school ways; I gained a wealth of knowledge. If you want to improve yourself, this is the teacher for you. If you want an easy grade and to coast, she is not for you. I hope I get the chance to take her class again.
There weren't many lectures that actually discussed what makes good writing. We didn't discuss the mechanics that was going on behind the stories that we read. Candace's expectations are high, which is fine, but for the most part you are left guessing as to how you can improve.
Candace is horrible for creative writing. She doesn't teach; her class format is read a story, then discuss. She cuts off students, dismisses comments and is demeaning. Her grading is tough but contradictory; you won't learn or be able to improve from it either. Going to office hours doesn't help either. If you want to write, don't take her class.
Honestly one of the worst teachers I have ever had. Super condescending and will straight up tell you you're wrong if your ideas aren't exactly the same as hers. Unclear outlines for papers and harsh grading system. Definitely do not recommend.
TERRIBLE TEACHER!!! She never taught anything, would sometimes start talking about the material, then get distracted and talk about herself the rest of the class. She grades horrible even though she never taught us anything about writing, she made hurtful comments about your essay too. NEVER TAKE A CLASS WITH THIS TEACHER!
A horrible teacher in the wrong profession and is not eager to help students and loves to watch them fail.
do not take this class-teacher, all students this semester have told me the same I'm telling you. She criticizes not constructively. She is very hostile.
She has a reputation as a tough marker, but I felt she was fair. I didn't get higher than 85% in this class, but everything felt like there was a reasoning behind it. She seems old fashioned at first, but she's actually got a good sense of humor and is very accepting of all her (especially queer) students- as long as they show up to class lol
Made tone-deaf remarks about slavery/race/gender, constantly cutting off students, publicly berated me to the class for being 7 minutes (and repeated this multiple times), stated her 40 years of experience as a qualification for not answering student questions, and refused to take any responsibility when confronted for her actions. Course dropped.
- Does not utilize D2L + only way to get assignment info is through attendance - Does not teach you HOW to compose the papers she assigns, class consists of listening to her speak - No notes provided - Condescending when responding to questions, poor feedback - Doesn't provide assignment rubrics - Very old fashioned teaching style, not for everyone
If you are going to take this course with her you should already know how to do everything that is on the learning outcomes, otherwise, you will struggle to get a 50% through the whole course. She might be good for those with some literature background but if this course is new to you better try with another professor.
Candace is a good lecturer but she would talk so much about religions, and how other countries have some pros and cons. Anyone can have their own opinions but she would usually slide down from the topic that we are supposed to talk about. She would dismiss opinions/comments from men. If it is your first time taking literature, avoid Candace.
Believe what is being written on this website, she is only good for those who already know the topics of the class beforehand. If this class is new to you do not take it with her, you will waste your time and money.
Ending it all because of this prof!!! Why she's still teaching is beyond me! She has no compassion and does not care for her students, unless you're perfect and attend every single boring useless uninformative class. I have gotten an A in every single english class I've taken in my life up until this point. Gives vague feedback, very snarky. (1/2)
Don't waste your time and money unless you want to lose your confidence. She doesn't have rubric, so her marking is based on how she felt at the time and whether your interpretation is same as her or not. Many students were struggling to get 50%. It's so hard to follow her lecture because she distracts and talks about herself a lot. AVOIDE Candace!
Hell is ahead be aware of it. If you are going to take a class with her you better know how to pray and put yourself in God's hands because the devil already made you register on a nightmare.
I used to take Rate My Professor with a grain of salt. Now I take it a lot more seriously. Trust the reviews. Do not take any class with Candace. You will waste your money.
Yes, Candace is a tough professor, but I think she's misunderstood. If you put the effort in, show up to class, participate in class, try your hardest, she will respect you as a student and will feel more obligated to help you. She won't waste her time with you if she feels you aren't taking her class seriously, which in my opinion is fair enough.
She is easily the worst prof I've ever had. So difficult to deal with. Mean to some students too. She degrades students in front of everyone. Instead of providing constructive criticism, she just makes a face. I really wouldn't recommend her. I'm sure she is a good person but teaching is not for her. I hope she finds another career path.
I liked the readings and the conversations in class were very interesting. She brought some nice essays to read…. But …. If you are an ESL forget it! Go with someone who wants to help you. She doesn't really teach you how to write neither give a clear rubric guidelines. You have to go and ask her I guess.
Avoid this class with Candace if you're new to the subject - the grading is harsh and the lectures can be disorganized. For study prep, try using unstuck AI alongside the textbook to better understand the material.
By far the worst professor I ever had. If you are an ESL student avoid her, she does not care about her students. You will need to learn everything by yourself. Do not waste your money in her class.
Unfortunately, my experience with this English professor was extremely disappointing. From the beginning of the course, it was clear that she lacked genuine interest in her students' learning or success. She was unapproachable, and seemed more focused on completing the syllabus than actually helping us understand the material.
Candace Fertile is the worst professor I have had in the 5 years of post-secondary I have attended. Man I've had some bad profs (even one that made a pedophile joke) and I have to say that Candace takes the gold medal for the worst prof. She thinks every student is incompetent when she can't even spell “compatible”. Do not take her course.
If you want someone who has a clear rubric, find someone else. For the class i took with her, everything my classmates and i wrote were graded as she read and based on feelings, and she didn't seem to respect any use of foreshadowing or other such literary devices. She also seemed rather dismissive and annoyed by students who tried to engage.
If you are an ESL student, do not take it with her! All I have to say! Not friendly, not enough information/ activities given to be able to pass an assignment or test!
The best part of this class was meeting up with other classmate after class to complain and compare our confusingly marked work. DON'T TAKE THIS CLASS, join a poetry writing group instead or go somewhere else idk. she kills creativity
This course did not meet my expectations. The teaching style was unclear and disorganized, making it difficult to understand key concepts. There was little constructive feedback, and the lessons did not support steady improvement.
