Prof Damiani is so nice and a great teacher. She goes over the material in an organized way and will answer any question you have. The lectures are interesting and she even teaches the recitations herself. It's a bio class, so it will be hard, but she is great. Take her if you get the chance!
She gives a pretty mean exam, but her class is definitely doable. She has some tricky questions and if the entire class tries to argue it, she doesn't want to hear it. All of her exams are cumulative so be prepared. I thought she did a good job at explaining the material.
She is great at explaining materials in lecture, but her grading system is unfair. What do I mean unfair? It means she will give you a B+ but in reality you should have earned an A-. I am sure she didn't do this on purpose but simply follows the rule of the University. But you got to fight for your grade even it seems useless.
This class was great––though really, really difficult, with lots of information and cumulative tests. Professor Damiani certainly knows the subject and does a good job at explaining it. To get a good grade, make sure to keep along with your studying and try to find other sources of information online. Great professor!
One of my favorite classes I've taken thus far as an undergrad. Damiani is really an incredible prof. I'm not sure why people are complaining about her grading... maybe they're just bitter? You have to work for this class, and you really have to understand all of the material to do well on the exams. I would recommend her.
Damiani clearly knows what she presents and explains it clearly. Compared to other Bio professors she was the best I have had. If you put in the time (basically review a little everyday) then you will get a good grade and learn A LOT. It's almost hard not to pay attention in her lectures.
Damiani is a great teacher. I did not appreciate her till halfway through the course. She may seem somewhat intimidating in the lecture, but she is very approachable when you go to office hours. She is a great lecture and really adds a lot to the course. Its meant to be a somewhat difficult class, but she is definitely a great professor.
Good professor but needs to be more responsible. Very slow in responding to emails and sometimes puts up lecture notes a day before the exam. Takes forever (more than a month) to grade homework assignments, does not give grading rubric, and does not explain why you loose points. Exams are difficult but doable. Helpful in office hours.
She is a great lecturer, and very interesting to listen to. She is useless at responding to email and the online discussion boards she created, so that's a huge downfall. Her exams can be a bit tricky but you should catch the tricks if you actually studied. Overall, highly recommended. She makes immunology fun to learn.
One of the only qualified professors I've come into contact with in this department. I wish this woman could teach every one of my courses. She is a great lecturer, easy to listen to, and helpful with questions. Her tests aren't easy but there are points to help out. Take her if you can, for Microbio especially.
Do not take her class! I am a good student but had to have emergency surgery and she told me to withdraw because she does not allow anyone to make-up assignments even if your life was on the line! Also her tests are nothing like how she lectures. She thinks she is amazing but avoid her at all costs.
Attendance is basically mandatory because she uses iclickers and does not post certain parts of lecture on purpose so you have to come. She's an excellent lecturer and her tests are tough but fair. If you're ready to work, this class is definitely do-able with her.
My favorite science teacher by far. Her lectures are very interesting and she only tests you on what you learn in class (as opposed to so many teachers who don't have time to teach the material but expect you to know everything from the book). She is super approachable and I highly recommend taking her for anything you can, microbio is great too!
Dr. D is a phenomenal lecturer and I've learned so much from her, but her exams have to be one of the hardest I've taken. All of her questions are wordy and utilize HEAVY application-even to some things we've never talked about. Somehow the averages are never too low though so don't expect much of a curve! Overall, I really do recommend Dr. D!
She is one of the best bio teachers in the entire department. She spends a lot of time explaining difficult topics to ensure everyone in the class fully understands. Her classes are very relaxed and she has a great sense of humor. I would recommend her to anyone!
Very clear and concise. her powerpoints are very helpful, but her lectures are very interesting and more helpful. She's easy to talk to and very personable. Her tests are difficult, but it's not hard at all to get an A. She's definitely the best professor to take for bio 160.
AMAZING professor. I hated foundations bio 1, but she made foundations 2 not bad. Her tests are annoyingly difficult (nitpicky), but you can still do well. She listens to student feedback and is very accessible. She set up a facebook group for each recitation and responded to any question any student posted there. Always has good examples in class.
Great Professor. Everything you need to know are in her slides, which she gives to you after she has gone over the material. Tests are rather difficult, extremely nitpicky about the answer. Very personable, friendly, and clear.
Dr. D is one of the best professors I've had so far. She's entertaining in class and explains the concepts very well. Her tests can be difficult though, but she does everything she can to prepare you. I only used the book when she would tell us to study certain sections and still did pretty well.
Damiani is a great professor! Powerpoints are online and have everything you need to know except a few extra things covered in recitation. Not much work other than studying for her not-so-easy tests that are wordy but 100% fair. I'd recommend her to anyone! She's young, friendly, and has a great sense of humor--probably your best option for bio 2.
Dr D is a great prof & very knowledgeable, she makes an effort to know & interact with students, and gives participation points for in class assignments & just trying clicker questions. Her tests are tricky, especially the multiple choice section. I learned a ton in her class and enjoyed learning it. Overall: I highly recommend her for microbiology
High quality, but very hard to combine with other tough classes as it requires a lot of work. Recommend for Bio 2, but not concurrently with OChem
Probably one of the best teachers I've had at pitt thus far. Getting an A does require a decent amount of work but it is possible. Read over the chapters before tests and look over her power points. Overall, she was awesome.
If you want to pay the university to learn wrong information and be testing in a really difficult way then take Damiani. She says wrong info in class and the questions she doesn't pull from online databases are poorly written and really confusing and vague. She acts like she cares, but she just likes to be in control. Definitely study the book.
Attend lecture because she uses iclickers but read the book to understand the material. Her exam questions are very unclear. She contradicts herself a lot between lectures. There are a lot of class activity points to bring up your grade, but there is no curve (and she'll keep reminding you about that).
One of the better bio professors I've had at Pitt. Rather than just have students memorize facts, she emphasizes conceptual understanding. Her questions only seem hard because she's testing your core understanding, not just memorization of all facts presented in class. Very clear, organized, and knowledgeable, but you need to be willing to think.
Prof Damiani was one of the best professors I have had at Pitt. Her exams were fair. If you studied and attended lecture, then it was very do-able. She isn't going to just hand you an A, you have to put in the work for it. Bust honestly, I'm glad that she makes you work hard because I learned so much in that class!
I'm surprised by some of the negative feedback listed here. She really made immunology fun and more big idea oriented than it could have easily been. Very personable and helpful outside of class. Getting an A isn't easy, but it shouldn't be. I probably didn't achieve an A, but I'll get the grade I deserve.
Just no. She picks tiny details from the book and her PowerPoint to test you on. It's not an easy class.
One of the best profs you can have in the bio dept. She's extremely helpful and, although the exams aren't easy, they are fair. Only what she covers in class will be on the exams. If you put in the effort, you will be fine.
Dr. Damiani is the best science professor at the University of Pittsburgh HANDS DOWN! I had her for Bio 2, Microbiology and Immunology. I am currently in a PhD program and I can honestly say that I look back through notes I took in her class regularly. She cares and is brilliant. This does not mean her classes are easy. But they are SO worth it!
Dr. D is the best professor I have ever had. She genuinely cares and WANTS you to learn the material, she does NOT want you to fail. Her tests are challenging but always fair. If you want to become a better student with better study habits and learn some science on the way....Dr. D is the person for you!!
My favorite teacher at Pitt so far. She moves very quickly through her powerpoint and sometimes I don't have time to write everything down, but she always posts them on CourseWeb. Go to recitation & ask questions. You'll get at least a B.
Damiani is an awesome professor who is very good at explaining. Her tests are completely fair and how you do is completely up to you
Dr. Damiani really made the material enjoyable. You have to work for your grade, reading quizzes required and recitation assignments. However, she is more than fair and gives you the opportunity to rework and challenge test questions. I would highly recommend her, she's one of the few in the Pitt bio department that has it together.
I really liked her as a professor. The tests will be difficult, it's a difficult course after all. She's always willing to help you out, you just have to ask. She'll give you tips and advice on how to improve your score, or if you just need lifecareer advice. Her lectures are crystal clear, and she will tell you up front what to expect.
Definitely one of the best Bio teachers at Pitt. Really clearly explains the material so you can understand it, and truly wants you to do well in her class. As long as you keep on top of the material you should be able to receive the grade you want! HIGHLY RECOMMEND.
Dr. Damiani is a great lady and very amusing, but she doesn't use the required book for most sections, hates answering questions, and is terrible at writing tests. If you learn better while reading, print out all of her slides and go through them instead of the book. The language in her tests is almost hilariously confusing and unclear.
Final exam was based around a handful of microbes discussed throughout the term and nothing else. Lots of meaningless group work, online assignments, and other useless out-of-class work that contributed absolutely nothing to learning the material. Pitt's bio department must be run by the spawn of Voldemort & Sauron because it's pure evil.
Dr. Damiani is one of the best biology professors at Pitt, which says a lot since Pitt's biology department is extremely poor. She is definitely fair and is an extremely well-liked professor (she's super sassy and hilarious). Her exams are extremely difficult. You need to know the material inside out and really have to be able to apply it.
Dr. D contradicts herself in lecture all of the time on material and on instructions. She says to focus on large concepts and then her tests focus only on specifics. For a test and her final, if you did not know if a random bacteria was gram + or -, you couldn't get the rest of the problem right-no partial credit-so tests didn't test your knowledge
TAs said this class and Dr. D's standards prepared them for upper level bio classes. My problem with her is that I felt she didn't care much about us as individual students. She is sassy and funny, but it gets old when you slave away for her class and she doesn't listen to the feedback you give her (some tests questions were unfair.) Doable though
The test were very difficult and sometimes had very specific details. Using the book and studying is a must. She has a bunch of TA's which are useful when you have questions that need answered quickly. Its a huge time commitment and just not an easy class. However, Dr. Damiani in my opinion, is Pitt's best bio professor by far.
Prof. D is such a fair and passionate instructor. Her lectures are fast-paced and really lively. She's incredibly smart and if you go to her office hours, she will explain every question you have. If you put in the time to really understand the material on your own, then ask her questions and study with friends and TAs, you'll be golden.
Lectures follow a random non-linear path and more time is spent trying to rearrange your notes and understand what she was trying to say than spent studying. Using the book is essential to passing the class, though tests are based on lectures. For tests, you will lose the entire question's points if you don't include something she didn't ask for.
Dr. Damiani is a great teacher, but the amount of required material she covers in class compared to the material she requires you to learn from the book is severely lacking. Vagueness regarding required knowledge from book + fill in the blank questions disaster. I don't want to wonder if I have to remember desquamation. Please, multiple choice.
With the difficulty of this class, Dr. D is by far one of the best profs to take. She has plenty of TA's who provide extra discussion hours and review sheets. Best way to get a good grade is read before class and go over her slides before tests. Getting to know the TA's is a must. They'll help you with what you don't know and give you hints too.
Very through in what is expected. No extra credit given at all. Makes you sincerely work for it. A- or an A is very possible, but you have to put a decent time after class (study groups, online practices, etc). Despite this, very fair exams. You will get the amount you put into it. Very funny person and sincerely cares about the subject.
She's a good teacher and usually pretty clear. She really likes what she's doing which always makes class better. Her tests can be pretty tough; they're long and you don't have a lot of time. She made immunology interesting even though I'm an ecology major. I'd take her again.
There were absolutely no practice tests to reference for exams which was absurd. She expected you to know every detail and manipulate it in a way you couldn't prepare for while studying. The fact that the recitation worksheets, iclicker questions, and mastering bio was scaled down to 15 points each ruin your chances of making up for bad test grades
For a student who excelled and enjoyed BIOSCI 0150, Dr. Damiani was a nightmare. Her condescending attitude towards her students is ridiculous. The exams do not test knowledge or even application, only whether or not you can decode the question itself. Do not take her, especially if you love Biology or she will ruin it for you.
Great teacher that's there for you in an academic and personal sense. Get ready to study hard. Don't be a lazy complainer and an A is achievable
She was one of the meanest professors I've ever had. Continuously reminding students of your point system doesn't mean it's a justifiable one. The tests were ridiculous and I think she forgot that this was the second bio class most students had taken. She just expected way too much, and was very judgmental when asking for help. DO NOT TAKE HER.
Dr. D is very intelligent in her field. She seems very harsh in class but if you go to her office hour she is very nice and helpful. Her tests are tough and questions can be confusing every once in a while and she's also not very flexible, but these should be expected given a 250 students class. She is very funny and her class is so enjoyable.
Thank the lord for a curve, otherwise I would have gotten a C. Damiani is not the worst Bio teacher I have had at Pitt but she's definitely not the best. Her multiple choice questions are confusing as all hell and even if you know the material, you will still get some wrong. But she is knowledgeable and helps when you need it.
Posts her lectures which is helpful to review, but gives no practice tests or inclination to what may be on the test. Multiple choice test questions are sometimes hard to decode, other times straight from quizlet. Mastering, clicker, and recitation points count for a large percent so use them up! Can be funny, but also very rude in class.
She tries to deny it but there are things she does that make her look like shes trying to be intimidating and she does have some attitude/snark to her. Hit or miss; she was either rather helpful when I went to ask questions or like I described above. Class is mostly fine, alot of work and some tricky MC questions but if you study well youll be fine
She's ok. She teaches fast, and her tests are out of 40 points, so they're hard to get an A sometimes. Worst thing is that she never gives tests back, only the written portion. I never had the opportunity to go to her office hours, I had other classes, but the chances I did go, she was very dismissive and didn't really answer my questions.
Dr. Damiani truly cares about her students and it's very clear that the negative comments on here are by students who did not get to know her. Her lecturing style is engaging and interesting and she takes very difficult material and makes it very easy to understand. it's not an easy class, but she makes it very possible to do well.
Dr. Damiani is a professor who ensures that A students earn their grade. Exams are only 40 points and they generally cover a wide swath of material, so there will be situations where you may be slammed for not knowing a slide's worth of material in total detail. You never know what slide that may be so make sure to know EVERYTHING if you want an A.
I think Damiani is one of the best professors I've had. I had her for bio 2 and micro. She is very clear, makes lectures interesting, and is very fair. You have to know the material. And if you complain it's because you didn't study. Like I said, very fair, but a lot of work.
If you work really hard, you'll be fine. She can be very condescending, even though she says she trying not to be. But she does use good examples for concepts.
Compared to other teachers in the biology department, she isn't really that intelligent. She isn't a very good lecturer and when you get the exam there's a lot of questions that weren't even covered in class. When she lectures, she kind of talks down towards her students like she is better than them. If you're looking for an A, don't take her.
Dr. Damiani is a very good lecturer and very clear with examples, but her exams are very specific and require absolute understanding of the material. I studied for hours and thought I knew the information, only to struggle when answering the short answer portion of the exams. You can't pass the class if you just memorize information.
Her testing style will either be your fav or your worst nightmare. You only get 40 points to prove yourself. Exams are VERY TRICKY, BE CAREFUL. Read the textbook in depth, study her lectures in depth. I recommend re-listening to her lecture recordings to ensure you don't miss anything. Good prep for MCAT testing!
She is so bad. She would mess up so many times during her lectures that it would confuse everyone. 80% of the class failed one of her quizzes and instead of taking any blame, she blamed all of the students for not reading or studying. I asked to meet with her outside of office hours, said she is busy, but then in lecture said shes in office all day
She's not a bad lecturer, but sometimes she spends too much time on things that aren't super important. Most of her TA's don't do anything. It seems like all most of them care about is sucking up to her for a letter of rec. She's also lazy. Our extra credit we did right after test 1 isn't in. We have already taken test 2. Unpredictable.
Had Dr. Damiani for Micro and was great. She posted her lectures online and really brought interesting material to her lectures. Dont need to worry about a textbook. Tests are difficult but fair. Not an easy A but you will learn a lot.
She is a very bad Prof. she spends too much time on things that aren't important. She doesn't care about students and doesn't RESPECT them. She always blames students. She gives alot to do outside the class that aren't covered in lectures. exams were too long and confusing w/ outside materials. Her TA's are useless. Class average was extremely low.
Talks too fast, Doesn't use the textbook. Definitely go to lectures because there are in class assignments and questions used for participation points. There is one group project on the operons. Utilize the TAs because they can help you with the exams. Exams are extremely challenging, she loves to mutate everything you learn.
One of my favorite professors! She is a tough cookie and gives tough exams, but really is passionate about what she wants to teach you and makes class interesting. She is serious during class, but really easy to talk to outside of class. She offers many materials to help you learn.
Extremely disrespectful and condescending to students. Material is not difficult but she is incredibly rude to her students. If she makes errors she refuses to see her fault and blames the students. She is not a professor I would recommend to another student. Find ANY other bio professor you won't regret it.
Openly rude, condescending and dismissive in class. Very good lecturer--gives detailed lectures and notes/resources. Attendance is mandatory for Tophat points. Three tests are only out of 40 points each and she tries to trick you, especially on the free response, so it is not always easy to do well. Final was ridiculous and only 60 points. Beware.
Yeah just don't take her period.
Dr. Damiani is a tough grader but a great professor. I learned more with her than I have in any other bio class at Pitt. She expects you to put in the work and learn rather than memorize information. Tests can be challenging but if you put in the time you will do just fine, and there is room for improvement in the semester. Take her, it's worth it!
She can be a little condescending but she definitely notices when you try hard, even in a big class. Lectures tend to complement and clarify readings, so try to do the readings first and after lecture suddenly everything makes sense. Exam questions can be ambiguous and since they're out of 40 pts of 20 MC, be prepared to work. Clear expectations.
She gives off a nice impression for the first few weeks of class. Then you realize that she's a professor who doesn't admit that she's made mistakes, doesn't post materials consistently, and says blatantly misleading things in lecture. She's a nice person. Sort of. Just don't expect to like her as a professor.
Worst prof I have ever had at pitt. Ridiculously condescending and rude to her students. Exams are ridiculous. Wastes time in class complaining how poor her students are doing, tries tricking you on all questions, isn't available although she says she's "there for her students" all the time. I loved bio 1 and she made bio 2 MISERABLE.
Dr. Damiani is one of the best professors that I have ever had here at Pitt. Although her tests and material can be difficult, she doesn't try to trick you and they are straight forward. She is very helpful if you go to office hours and knows the material well. As long as you study and pay attention in class, you will be fine.
Doesn't teach, just regurgitates material as fast as possible and leaves the rest to the students, multiple times if you take her will be disrespectful to students. will often times talk a mile a minute without any organization to the lecture, leaving everyone confused
She is a great lecturer and presents material in an interesting way but she can be unclear about a few details so double check the info you are memorizing. Class is mostly lecture based- used book sparingly, only when told to for bold terms. Tests are tough- tricky wording- read very carefully! I learned a lot and would recommend Dr. Damiani highly
She lays out exactly what she expects from you. She can initially sound condescending sometimes, but that has more to do with how fast she's thinking than what she thinks of you. A good bit of independent reviewing and digesting is expected of you. Some exam questions aren't worded well, but she allows you to challenge them
Damiani is definitely a tough professor but if you understand the material, you'll do well on the exams and quizzes - questions pull a lot of information together so they're difficult! She posts lectures online but sometimes the files don't work. Micro's a really hard course but it's so interesting and really rewarding - definitely take it!
Damiani is one of the most condescending prof's I've ever had, and god help you if you dare ask a question or contradict her in class. Re-copy your notes after class, check TopHat frequently, quiz your friends and have your friends quiz you. Stay on top of things, and it's mostly painless.
Damiani can come off as rude or condescending but that literally doesn't matter at all, her lectures are very extremely enjoyable and she's very good at teaching the material. Her tests can be quite difficult and some questions are worded awkwardly but they are fair and if you really know the material you will do well.
Dr. D is easily the best professor I've had at Pitt. She is very knowledgeable, tells you exactly what she expects you to know, and is obviously very passionate about micro/ immuno (I've taken both w/ her). If you pay attention and do the work, you will do fine in her classes. She's accessible in office hours and really wants you to succeed.
Dr. Damiani is the best professor I have had so far at Pitt. While she can seem condescending during lecture, she is actually very nice if you approach her during office hours or after class. She is EXTREMELY knowledgeable. Be aware: her tests require you to apply learned information, simple memorization will NOT get you a good grade.
Fact is she is very condescending. She talks way too fast and expect the material to make sense I wish she could record the lecture and definitely take notes s exams are hard but doable. Her tophat questions are mostly during the early semester so wait until later before missing class. NO EXTRA CREDIT AT ALL.
She's not approachable outside of class at all. Her exams are extremely difficult and specific. Out of all the exams, the final exam is the easiest and most straightforward. She's hard, but if you work really hard, you can be successful in the class. You can replace your lowest exam grade with your final exam grade.
Dr. D doesn't give partial credit and rarely admits that she's wrong. You have to make sure to read the textbook before each lecture to know what's going on. She doesn't give exams back, you can look over them at a recitation or during office hours. However she's accessible outside of the classroom, and there are many UTA office hours to attend.
Had a "better" professor for bio 1 but turns out Damiani is the better one despite what is said here. She explained concepts clearly, is hilarious, and I got a B which is much better than when I got a C in bio 1 and studied 5x as much. If you go to lecture and study every week you should be in good hands
Damiani is a nice lady but can be pretty intimidating sometimes. I found her class pretty interesting since she did units like cardiology and immunology, which fascinated me. She makes you work for it but use the TA's and other tutoring resources to get her old exams.
Damiani can be an intimidating professor, but that does not really matter as she is definitely one of the best teachers in the bio department. Her tests are tough, but as long as you read the lecture notes and completely understand the recitation sheets an A is attainable.
Dr. D is my absolute favorite professor at Pitt. Yes, her tests are difficult, because she tests for comprehension of the material, and not just memorization of facts. However, you will learn SO much from her class, and it's totally possible to get an A you just need to put the work in.
Dr. D was a great professor! Lectures were always very interesting and engaging. The information I learned in this class was actually useful. Her tests were challenging but very manageable. She was overall a very caring professor and wanted her students to succeed. You definitely had to work hard to get a good grade, but it's not impossible!
Dr. Damiani can be intimidating, but overall she's knowledgeable, caring, and funny. Her exams are very detail-oriented, so you have to make sure you study everything covered. However, if you put in the time, the exams are challenging but doable and you end up learning a lot.
Honestly an amazing professor. Damiani really wants you to learn and understand the material. She makes the class enjoyable and in comparison to Bio1 that I had with one of the "best" professors for Bio1, Damiani ended up being the significantly better teacher in my opinion. The class is however challenging but worth it.
Did not enjoy her class at all. Although some of her resources were helpful--such as TopHat--she offered no help at all and is an extremely hard grader. Do not even think about asking her for help if you're lost because she will do nothing but tell you to figure it out.
To be honest, students do not like her because she makes them put in a lot of effort. However, she does this because she really wants you to understand the material. She can be tricky, but as long as you take your time on the exams and study, you should be just fine. Definitely take her if you want to get a lot from Foundations 2.
Damiani is by far the best biology professor at Pitt, I had Roberts and Donovan and she was 100x better than both of them combined, she's strict yes, but completely reasonable with what she expects, she records all of her lectures and posts them online, the key to pass is definitely re-listening to them! Tophat is easy points and a big grade boost
Talks extremely fast during lectures. Extremely rude to students. Her rudeness is very discouraging. She is not good at explaining concepts to students and even flat out refuses to explain anything she went over in class. Rely on the UTAs to pass.
Exams can be purposefully difficult/tricky at times, but grading is very fair for the most part. Roughly half of TopHat points are only in class, so go to every lecture. Lectures may seem fast at times, but manageable overall and they're recorded. Recitation can have mini lectures/activities, so they are useful times to practice concepts.
Dr. Damiani is a wealth of knowledge that any pre-health student should take advantage of. Even if you don't get the grade you want in her class, you most likely learned a lot of things that will be useful in the future. Exams are HARD and do not allow for any confusion. Know the material inside, out, & backwards before sitting for one of her exams
Damiani is incredibly condescending and disrespectful to her students. I put so much time and effort into foundations of biology 2 and my grade did not reflect my knowledge. Her exam questions are ridiculous; her lectures are informative but have nothing to do with her exams. I would never take a class with her again solely because she is so rude.
Dr. Damiani gave lectures with very interesting material such as diseases, heart and lungs, and immunology. She was always approachable in my opinion, and make sure to re-watch all her lectures to understand anything you're confused about. Her tests are difficult and may take some time to get used to, but study hard and you should be okay.
I really enjoyed Dr. D's lectures and she can even be funny sometimes. She is also pretty intimidating so there are not many students in her office hours although they are helpful to attend if you have questions. Attend her UTAS discussion hours they are SUPER helpful and they give your practice worksheets.
Dr. Damiani is your best choice for Bio 2. All of the "condescending" remarks on this page are phony. She's actually super interesting and I despised bio 1. Rewatch her lectures, understand them, book is rarely needed, go to UTA hours frfr (helped me get an A), be confident answering exam Q's, you'll get the hang of them. Hard work A. No cap.
I loved Dr. D's class. She lectures very well, and wants to make sure that everyone understands the material. Her tests can be challenging, but if you attend UTA discussion sessions, and study lecture notes, you will do great.
Dr. Damiania is a good professor. She makes it obvious that really cares about you and emphasizes mental health too. Her class is some work but you can at least achieve a B with some work. Her midterms questions can be poorly worded which is frustrating but you can challenge them the last week of class. Lectures are engaging and material is fun
Damiani is an amazing lecturer, I truly enjoyed going to her class and learned a lot. However, I wish she used a different grading system or at least offered more points. The amount of points offered does not match the effort invested in the class. The low point scale also makes it pretty difficult to get an A in the class.
Candice Damiani takes the subject of microbiology, something extremely interesting, and makes you hate it. She has no regard for her students or their needs. The material is not that difficult but Damiani's tests are ridiculous. There is no way to earn back points or succeed in this class. It's either do well on her stupidly difficult tests or fail
I went into exams feeling confident, but questions are tricky. I put in a LOT of studying & never got the grade I felt that I should have, especially because I felt like I actually knew the material. That being said, Dr. Damiani really cares about students and tries her best to give every resources necessary to pass. Lecture recordings are great.
Damiani is a great Professor that generally cares for her students. However, her grading system makes it near impossible to get an A in the class. I put countless hours into studying for her exams to a point where I knew the material well, yet the exams did not reflect that.
The material is not difficult but her tests are VERY difficult. Phrasing is often convoluted or unclear. Gives a cumulative final but only lets you see exams within an exam review, when she feels like having one. UTA worksheets are key here. She's a good lecturer but has no qualms in taking 10 minutes out of class time to berate you after a test.
The course is interesting and I learned a lot. BUT, she makes it really difficult. The tests are "reasonable", but her questions are hard and its really easy to not do well when there are little other points in the class. I don't think she is very helpful outside of class and UTA worksheets don't help very much. Nothing prepares you for exams.
Damiani is tough but makes the information really interesting and relatable to real life. If you actually want to learn (if you want to go into science) I strongly recommend taking her. She seems intimidating but is really nice if you talk to her one on one. Attendance only mandatory for recitation but sometimes she does random tophat in class.
Dr. Damiani is a great lecturer and keeps information relevant and super interesting. Her tests are really tricky, but if you study it'll be ok. She posts lecture recordings after every lecture, which are super helpful while studying. I learned a lot and I'm glad I took her for bio 2.
I took Dr. D for Bio 2, and on the outside she tries to act really stoic. But she cares, so much for her students and wants them to succeed in college. Lectures are recorded online. If you go to class take careful notes, go to recitation, and go to extra help sessions, it is an easy A
Dr. Damiani is very smart, but she is openly scornful of students who are struggling. Trying to talk to her as someone with an A versus being someone with a C is night and day. I have seen it. I did very well in the class, but professors should be judged on how they treat kids who don't just instantly "get it," not the reverse. Truly disappointing.
Dr. D is the best lecturer I've had. She explains complicated concepts in accessible ways but tests are tricky. Figure out how to take her exams. She is very nice and willing to help, but she can be temperamental at times. Great professor, just expects you to work for your grade. I'd take her again 100 percent.
By far my favorite professor and she made me love microbio. I was upset that I did not get my target grade because I thought I knew the material well but her exams are very difficult, preparing you for higher ed. UTA office hours are helpful and watching her recorded lectures before the exam helps solidify the knowledge. Be ready to work hard.
I'm a science major and this class is IMPOSSIBLE even by those standards. The hw questions are unfair. There are things every day she has never mentioned before in the homeworks that aren't in the textbook either that end up on hw. Exams: EXTREMELY unfair. You have to work at breakneck speed to finish and even then it's meant for you to not to
Dr. Damiani is a great lecturer, very passionate in what she is teaching about. If you go to class and read a few pages from the textbook before class, you'll get an A. However, the class content is all posted through Facebook. TopHat had all the lectures, homework, papers, etc. The content felt hard to access over these platforms.
Idk what I more I was supposed to do in this class. Basically the amt of work u put in is not correlated w your grade. Exam questions are borderline impossible, and once we switched to online, she used tophat multiple answers (all or nothing) as the majority of test questions. Extremely unfair despite how much work i put in, pleaaaaase dont take
Dr. Damiani is a fantastic lecturer and a great person. I learned a ton in this class, and it's really interesting. HOWEVER, I have never worked harder for a B in my life. Her exams are hands down the trickiest ones I have ever taken. It's one of those classes where you can walk out of the exam feeling like you got 100% and end up with a 40%.
She obviously loves the material and is enthusiastic. I read the text book and had a solid understanding of the material, even working in the field but some of the questions she posses are specifically there to mess with you so beware. Not sure I would take her again. I went to others in the department to clarify answers that were marked wrong.
Clearly knows her subject but intentionally puts many trick questions & gotchas on exams. Also the only teacher I have ever had in my entire life that does not let us see which questions we got wrong on exams, we just see the overall exam score and that's it. Her class was a huge pain.
Tough class, but totally worth it! interesting material, and as a premed I loved the relevance to medicine. Exams were tough, but kind of fun to go through as they were never straight recall.
She changed her grading scheme so that in order to get an A in the class, you MUST get an A average on all homework assignments, group projects, and exams. In order to pass the class, you MUST have a C average on all assignments, projects, and exams. She is setting you up to struggle. She does not care for your mental health as a student. Avoid.
I really am stunned by how bad my experience with her has been. I have never had a professor outright accuse an entire class of cheating with no proof and then admit that she is purposely writing exams to trick students. We are not allowed to see our answers for any assessments. She is extremely knowledgeable on microbiology, but AVOID AT ALL COSTS
Hey Hey Hey you think HW and Recitation will boost your grade? NO. YOU NEED A 90% AVG ON 6 MODULE ASSESSMENTS! YOUR FINAL DOESN'T MATTER. YOU CAN GET A 100% ON THE FINAL AND 100% ON HOMEWORK AND 100% ON RECITATION AND COME TO EVERY CLASS BUT STILL GET A B IF YOUR EXAM AVG IS 89.4%! DOESN'T GIVE EXAMS BACK. AVOID HER ONLINE PLEASE.
If you can take someone else for Bio 2, do it. Dr. D's grading policy poorly reflects the knowledge of the students. Her lectures are disorganized and the exams do not reflect what she teaches. She is also very rude to students who do not understand. Asking question about the content is a no go. I would not take her class again.
The worst grading scheme I have ever had and most likely will ever have. In order to get an A you must average at least a 90% each on exams, homework and recitation. So if you get a B in one of those, you do not receive an A. I expected much more from her and the Biology department at Pitt during such a stressful time of this pandemic.
her grading scale is all or nothing. You need a 90 or above in hw tests and module activities in order to receive an A in her class if you have below that in any area you grade drops a letter. she isnt very understanding and answers emails very rudely. if the answer is no dont expect an answer. i wouldnt take her again especially not online.
Dr. D is a good lecturer. However her grading scale is unfair. To get an A you need to get a 90 average on recitation, homework, and on 6 assessment modules. And to determine if you get a plus or minus on your grade you have to get a 34/40 for a plus and below that is a minus. Even if you get an 89 average on tests you could end with a B-.
She is such a good lecturer. She changed her grading scheme and it is fair. Honestly, her grading scheme makes it so much easier to get an A without studying for the final. Her homework and recitation assignments are easy to do. Her TopHat homework problems basically reflect the exam. EASY CLASS especially for bio 2.
Dr. D is a good person, her tests are more applications questions but you can handle them. Always keep up with material she gives to you. Her grading system a little off but she can make adjustments to it. She wants to you to learn and work hard like every professor wants. Not a hard class if you like this topic. Recommended for pre-med!
Dr. D. was not super well-liked among my class, because her grading scheme was unlike any other bio professor in the department and she refused to let us see what questions we missed on an exam even though students begged her. She wasn't always organized, but as long as you tried you could do well.
Very rude professor. Do not be fooled with the whole page of mental health on her syllabus, she does not care about her students. Very difficult grading rubric. Very difficult exams and refused to change the difficulty even though it was online. Don't bother asking her questions, she'll just make you feel like you asked the dumbest question.
Dr. D is a decent lecturer but this class was by far the hardest class I've ever taken. I never felt comfortable asking her questions because she was extremely condescending and rude to students. Also doesn't allow you to see what you missed on exams to learn from your mistakes. UTA's are the only reason i passed this class
This semester was unbelievable! I think you should consider taking her class if you are willing to put in the work and get past the intimidation she brings. She loves when students are just as passionate about the topic as she is, and it helps her get a better idea of how to help you grow as a student. IT WILL NOT BE AN EASY A!!!
Damiani uses block grading. The exam grade to get an A is a 90% average but the recitation and homework grades are hard to get. The final determines if you get a + or - on your letter grade. She is extremely rigid in her grading and will not give points back or round your grade. Lectures were average, you need to watch. Try to take someone else.
Only thing that I didn't really like about this class was how there's little partial credit. Other than that, listen to the lectures, read the book if you want a better understanding (I stopped after a bit), and ask concept questions. She is intimidating, but at the end of the day, I did learn a lot from her class. Study groups helped a lot.
We had 7 midterms and 1 final during the semester. You have to get a 95% or higher on the hw and a 90% or higher on recitations and exams to get an A in the class. If you don't make it in one of the categories you drop down to a B instantly. She did go over the material really well though. Watch all the lectures and do the homework and you'llbefine
bro, avoid her at all cost. But I guess her class is a good prep for SAT reading or GRE reading.
The class is not hard. There was a lot of busy work that is unfortunately graded. I felt like I was back in AP Biology. She does not care about her students outside of the classroom. She will do the absolute minimum. Overall, easy class, bad professor, and too much homework for simple material.
DrD is a very hard prof and has very high standards. However this is also an upper level course so you should probably expect that, or else don't be a stem major ig. She teaches the material very well and does have hard assessments. I learn a lot in her class and I think everyone just needs to suck it up or not take advanced stem courses. sorry.
I have a 3.94 GPA and I got a C in this class. She is the worst professor I've ever had. WOuld teach material after assignments, would consistently give youtube videos or previous lectures instead of teaching us. Her ordering of course material makes no sense as everything seems hodgepodged together. Avoid at all costs. Do not take.
Uncaring and inconsiderate professor. Tells us to come to office hours just to berate us and talk rudely to us. Hard quizzes, unfair and ridiculous grading scale. Does not care about students or their grades. Do not recommend.
DO NOT TAKE HER unless you enjoy a semester's worth of suffering and torture. The most unreasonable and unfair grading system. Super condescending and rude to students since the first day of class. I dedicate all of my time to this class just to be disappointed. This class almost gave me depression and made me want to give up stem.
Treats her class like she is teaching to medical school students. Assumes an unfair level of prerequisite knowledge despite the class itself not requiring it. Basically the worst professor you want to have if you need to ask questions before you are tested on material. She leaves you hung out to dry on the exams and refuses partial credit
Don't take her. She did not give any feedback about your quiz so basically you don't know whether you are really on the right track and whether you have a good understanding to this concept. She has really high expectation to her students and lots of case studies. Her powerpoint is more important than textbook.
DON'T TAKE HER! Her grading policies don't make any sense. She doesnt allow students to review ANY exams, so it becomes impossible to figure out your mistakes. Her exams are VERY hard. You could have a good understanding of the material and still fail. She is very rude to students during office hours, and blames the class for having low averages.
I rated her highly in a previous rating, but change my mind now that the class is ending. I am in pain and keep failing everything. She blamed us for the class average being an F constantly even though we keep trying new study methods that she forces onto us. The grading scale makes absolutely no sense everyone else is not capping with that.
Avoid Dr. Damiani at all costs. Berates her students during office hours. So rude and unhelpful. Grades are based on only a few quizzes and homework assignments on TopHat, which no one ever gets full credit for. She never tells anyone what they get wrong on hw or quizzes, so we can't improve.
I've been fighting for a B all semester. all her lectures are pre-recorded from last year. blames the class for not knowing the material. rude in office hours. Her grading scheme sets you up for failure because getting 16/20 on quizzes alone brings your entire grade to a C. No feedback on quizzes. random group project not outlined in syllabus given
Dr. Ds class has defeated me. I have tried everything in my power to succeed in this class and because of her grading policy I will likely get a C or fail. I have not done well on quizzes but been getting high grades on assignments and homework. These grades do not average. She is incredibly inconsiderate of her students. Worst professor ever.
Dr. D says on the first day of class that her class won't be a walk in the park, and she didn't lie. This is an upper level Biology course, and it shouldn't be easy. I learned a lot in this class. While tests were very difficult, she would reward up to 20% back extra credit. If you are a hard worker and really want to learn, take this class.
Her lectures are SO engaging and interesting but then her assignments and tests take away any passion I have for the subject immediately. She also won't let you go over quizzes so you really don't know which concepts you understand and which ones you don't. My advice: be born smart and she'll be the perfect professor for you.
Some of the most engaging lectures I've ever seen. But I can't say I agree with her style of grading. Her categorized grading makes homework mandatory but ultimately useless in the grading. But the worst part was not getting your quizes back, you only got a grade. So you don't know if you made fundamental mistakes or simple errors. Rude to students
Like others have said, her grading criteria are extremely difficult to attain. Benchmarks are heavily skewed to exams and she doesn't have any leniency. The largest drawback is the inability to view incorrect exam questions, leading to a perpetuation of illogical thought processes and no clarification or rectification. She is only ostensibly nice
Her lectures align with the book which has more detail than her lecture notes. I highly suggest using Anki for this course to memorize a lot of the nitpicky details. I didn't take microbio before this and I found this course doable. Grading criteria is benchmark so you need combined >92% on homeworks and discussions and >90% on quizzes for an A
Dr. D is very engaging and clearly passionate about microbiology. Although her grading system seems unfair at first, it encouraged me to work harder and know the material better. She also noticed when students were struggling and gave extra points when needed. There was a high class average (especially for a bio class) I would recommend taking her.
I hated having Dr. D while I was in her class. It felt unnecessarily detailed and hard. However, now that I am in genetics, I have already learned most of the class. While she is very difficult while taking the course, it's worth it. My biggest complaint is that she does NOT allow anyone to see quiz answers after it is grading.
i love candice but her grading scale is ATROCIOUS. ABSOLUTLEY HORRID. no matter if you get a 100 or 40 on hw&recitation, whatever your average quiz grade is is your final grade no if ands or buts. Every other week there is an exam which means the second youre done taking it you have to start studying for the next one. NO curve. NO partial credit.
Dr. D is a passionate and impressive professor. She DOES give extra credit, its called quiz reworks. Horrible test taker here, but still managed to get an A in this category. Also, she DOES care about students, she's just intimidating. Basically, if you read the syllabus clearly, aren't entitled, and put in some effort, you'll get a lot out of it.
Dr. D is a solid choice for bio 2. Her quizzes are similar to the HW, and you get to earn up to 10% of the quiz in extra credit the day after. She's very helpful and kind in office hours. Offers 6 quizzes, an optional final, and allows you to drop lowest quiz grade. Homework and recitations are mandatory, and you WILL fail if you only do quizzes!
I think my mistake was taking this class as a gen. ed. requirement, as it does tend to be quite a bit of work; however, I can say that the work I put in was absolutely worth it. I didn't prefer her style at first but, if you hear her out her reasoning, you will grow to adore it. Some people appear to like the grading system but I did not prefer it.
Dr. D is the best lecturer I've ever had. She is super engaging. A lot of people seem to hate her and her grading scale but throughout the semester everything started to grow on me. She is very kind in office hours and her standards grading allows for a very easy end of semester. Put in the work early in the semester and it will pay off I promise.
Everyone complains about her grading but I think most bio 2 profs do it. Quizzes are kinda hard but you can get up to 7% extra credit for each one. Do good on the first 5 quizzes and you can drop the last one; the final is optional. You don't get your quiz back but you can look at the most missed questions. Go to ta office hours for the worksheet!!
Dr. D's lectures were great and engaging. She's also really helpful in office hours. I liked her standard grading system because it let me skip her final quiz, and the rework points bring up your quiz grades by a lot. Stay on track of your recitation assignments. There were only 6 recitation assignment grades which was a bit stressful.
Shes a really great prof and makes her lectures understandable, and she really tries to reach all types of students with them. Good for scared freshmen. I enjoyed coming to class every day and found the quizzes easy. Beware a bit of the benchmark grading system though. Miss too many homeworks and there goes your grade. This was my first science B
Prof. Damiani's lectures are engaging and she makes the material interesting to learn. Every lecture has loads of content so missing even one lecture would leave a huge gap in your understanding if you don't watch the online recording. Grading system is harsh, but if you make a serious effort in the class an A is definitely within reach.
I'm on the fence about prof. Damiani. She is an engaging professor but runs a very tight ship. Lectures are very interesting but there are some logistical things I don't like (her grading system, not being able to see quizzes afterwards). She can be intimidating, but if you follow the syllabus, you'll be fine.
Although her lectures were incredibly detailed and helpful, and she taught the material very well, Dr. D could work on having basic respect for her students. She was very unapproachable and quick to blame us for our struggles instead of considering she was doing something wrong. Sends very rude emails, and has a really stupid grading policy.
Im very iffy about her. She is an amazing lecturer, I wont take that away from her. But she gives this speech in beginning about caring for students mental health, but she doesnt. Shes the most unapproachable teacher Ive ever had, and is not willing to consider working with student. I went to one office hour and she made me feel like an idiot
Undoubtedly the BEST lecturer I've ever had! Really explains material well and uses examples that students can understand. Strict on her grading policies so don't ask her to change it, but otherwise, so incredibly caring for her students and makes biology so interesting to learn! LOVE THIS QUEEN!
GREAT bio prof! Very passionate about material, made lectures extremely fascinating. If you are good/have a backround in bio, you will love the level of complexity in this class. If you sucked at bio 1, good luck lmao. ONLY thing I would change is her unwavering policy of not giving back quizzes. Stupidest policy EVER but super amazing teacher.
Dr Damiani was a great lecturer, but extremely unapproachable and condescending at times. The quiz questions came out of nowhere sometimes, and even when I felt like I did well, I didn't. The bucket grading method really hurt me, and she is not so caring about mental health like she says she is. I would not take her if I had another option.
Dr. Damiani was a fantastic lecturer! I went in very scared of her and her grading system due to a lot of the negative reviews on here, but it is blown way out of proportion. Not the most approachable but her lectures are fantastic. You need to work for the grade but if you put in the time, you will pass. Go to office hours for her and the TAs!
Dr. D is a great professor, but she started assigning video lectures to supplement time wasted in class to review the exam answers. She asks for advice on how to improve the course and if a student suggests something, she humiliates them. Other than that, I think she is ca clear teacher that grades fairly and wants to help students.
She is a good teacher and conveys material well but the grading can be the worst. I was close to an A but didn't get it because my exam grades were high 80s. If they had been averaged out like a normal class I would've had an A; her grading system does not reflect my learned knowledge. I also felt belittled by the way she talked to the class often.
Dr. D is a great lecturer, and she posts all the lectures for later viewing. She must get a bad reputation due to how she used to grade(?), but I've had no issue. Material for the tests is always gone over in class and some is even directly from homework assignments. If you put in effort for this class, you will do well.
Her grading scale is horrendous. You have to get an 88% average on homework, tests, and recitations. You practically have to get a 27/30 on her tests in order to receive an A in the class, which is absolutely ridiculous. I would recommend not taking her at all.
I am not good at biology, and I struggled in bio 1. Not only is Damiani caring for her students, but she is also a great lecturer with pretty fair exams. I have never gotten a passing bio exam grade until taking her class, and she has boosted my confidence. She is tough and does not have the best grading scale. But I learned so much from her.
Lecture's are very material heavy and a lot of key info is only said out loud once, so you need to rewatch lectures. She doesn't care about student's struggling even though she says she does. Her grading methods can hurt you very early on in the semester and there's not much room for improving your grade.
Professor D is a thorough lecturer. The fact that you can't look at your quizzes is not as big a deal as it seems, as Professor D lets you rework most of the questions on the quiz during recitations. This class is very doable if you have some study skills. The problem I have is the grading scale, as my grade could drop to a B just from homework
Dr. D is a great lecturer and is passionate about the content. However, her grading system is awful. She says it's for the best for the students (it's not). The quizzes are manageable and she makes the content interesting.
Dr D is a "tough love" prof which gives her a bad rep with students. You must know the material if you are asking her questions. She gives supplemental readings and HW for you to practice. If you understand the HW you'll do well on her exams. Doesn't give exams back but goes over most missed exam questions in class. Grade is heavily based on exams
Dr. D gives the best lectures of any professor at Pitt and she posts them on Canvas so you can re-watch them. Standards grading sucks (you need an 88% quiz average to get an A) but her expectations are clear, the homework is great practice, and her quiz questions are straightforward. If you study consistently, it's hard not to pass. Love her!
Dr D. is an amazing lecturer; always super engaged during class. Her exams are difficult, but with consistent studying they are more than fair. She also gives tons of HW for practice thats extra credit toward your grade. One of my favorite professors at Pitt!
Her grading system is absolutely ridiculous. She claims it makes her students do better, but in reality, it only helps people who are good test takers. She likes to twist her questions around so they are confusing or unclear. If you are a bad test taker, DO NOT TAKE THIS CLASS.
Prof Damiani is a GREAT lecturer. Always interesting to listen in class and gives great examples. Class is very exam heavy so make sure you study. She doesn't give back the quizzes but she lets you redo some questions which she may or may not give points back for. Like the rest of the reviews, the grading scale sucks but I understand why its there.
Dr. D is an amazing professor! Her lectures are so awesome and she explains everything clearly. There are no surprises in this class because the syllabus is very detailed. I was nervous for this class because of the grading scale, but it is not as bad as others make it seem. If you put in the work, you will succeed in this class.
Good lectures.Must attend bc she will randomly do live tophat ?'s,but they are always recorded.Lectures are FAST+she says a lot that's not written.I usually had 2 rewatch.Horrible grading, you have to meet an average in each section.Disrespectful and unapproachable.Good luck DRS students.HW graded 4 correctness.Bad question writing on exams.
She was a great professor but definitely intimidating as a person. I liked taking smaller exams on each module rather than big midterms and finals. Your grade is based on how well you do in each category (quizzes, homework, recitations), enough assignments get dropped. Overall I really liked her.
I will say, I liked her about halfway through the semester. However, the class began to dip a LOT the last 2 weeks of class. She had our last midterm on the last day of classes (less than a week before our final). When someone would answer questions, she would reply in a demeaning manor.
Dr. Damiani is brilliant, but not approachable or understanding. It is hard to do well in her class - doing the homework, readings, application activities, TA sheets and reviewing lectures still didn't help due to poor exam structure. It's hard to get credit for HW or participation (need an 85% all semester for one single point for credit).
Dr. D is a wonderful prof. Her class is not easy, but her grading criteria are clear and fair. She gives rework points for the exams, and her lectures are pretty understandable. UTA resources and worksheets are plenty. Work hard and you don't even need to take the final.
Dr. D is a tough and intimidating professor, but she is great at explaining the content and lecturing. Quizzes were every 2 weeks with no exams which I liked because it was less content to focus on for each quiz. Quizzes are not given back but she gives back points on reworks when necessary. She lets you ask about quiz questions in office hours.
An amazing lecturer - I feel like I learned so much and was genuinely interested. However, terrible bucket grading scheme. She's very clear about what you need, but it's very hard to actually get the grades you need. Drops one out of six quizzes, final is optional for a plus or minus on your final grade. Still would recommend taking her!
Did not find her class difficult. Just do her TH questions and worksheets during recitation, making sure you understand them. She is absolutely the most passionate professor I have ever seen.
I loved Dr. D! Uses bench mark system and exams are hard you need to study a lot. Go to office hours and UTA group discussions they help a lot. She does sometimes spring open ended questions on the exam so beware of that.
Dr. Damiani is a great lecturer and professor. Her grading system is alright but she lays it out clearly from the get-go. You have to meet a minimum score for all three categories (quizzes, recitations, homework) to get a certain grade instead of combining them.
Fantastic teacher. She connects complex ideas to relatable, easy-to-digest ideas. Her slides are posted during and after class and she has so many resources available if you are struggling. I loved how this class was structured. She made me think about switching to a bio major (I'm literally a computer science major) I absolutely recommend her.
Dr. D is one of the best professors I have had. She is very up front about grading, a good lecturer, had everything is found on TopHat. Her course really made you feel like you learned something and earned the grade you got. If you put the work in, you will get a good grade.
Damiani gives a MEAN exam. By far one of the most challenging classes I've ever taken, hours of work due for every class. Although she seems like a nice person outside of class, I can't say I care for her as a professor. Despite this, she really is an amazing lecturer.
Dr. D is an awesome professor. Her exams are HARD and very application based. But this forces you to really understand the material and how it all ties together. She may come off as rude but she is actually very kind and funny, just a bit blunt and sarcastic. If you are passionate and willing to put in the effort Dr. D is a great choice!
Final exam is commonly missed previous exam questions, which you aren't allowed to review. She provides extra credit but its hard to get because you need to get above a certain grade on her difficult homework questions.
Immunology is a really cool class and but also hard. Grading policy is based on 6 quizzes, a final, and a paper assignment. Damiani builds in extra credit that's also really helpful. The content is very interesting, and Damiani does a good job with lecture too. Definitely a difficult class, but really worth taking if you want to put in the time.
Dr. D is an amazing professor who is incredibly passionate about what she does. She truly does her best to ensure the understanding of all her students and gives plenty of opportunity to ask questions and talk to her during her office hours. Final is optional! just put in the work, reach out, and work hard and you are sure to do well in her course.
Good at getting you to learn the information but one of the most rude narcissistic professors I've ever had. Spent a lot of class time telling us how good of a professor she was and hated it when you asked a question. She takes the average of exams reciation and hw and whatever of the 3 scores is the lowest is your grade. all for correctness
Damiani is very knowledgeable and gives you everything you need to succeed in her class. As long as you do the homework and recitation problems and study them, you will ace the exams. The worst thing is her grading, but just go to the UTA sessions and ask them about every question for HW. She is also very sarcastic and will roast the class.
She only grades based on the test percentage. If your test grades are lower then your homework and recitation grades then your grade will be the test scores, homework and recitation are not factored into the grade at all. For example, As in homework and a C in tests would give you a C in the class, there is no weighing or averaging the grades.
the grading system she uses involves taking the lowest letter grade between recitation, exams, and homework. was a little upset about it as I had received a B in both homework and recitation but ended with a C in exams so here we are. lectures are engaging, she also makes it so there are set things to do before and after lectures which really help.
Dr. D is a great lecturer but I found her unapproachable & sometimes downright rude; she has incredibly difficult exams with questions designed to trick you. I put my all into this class for an entire semester and still barely passed every exam. Read the textbook, rewatch lectures, redo hw and recitations, go to UTA office hours!!
Candice Damiani is the worst teacher I have ever had in my entire life. She is incredibly rude and unwilling to help students who are struggling in the class. She also uses a standards grading system, so if you get an A on homework and recitations, but an average of a D on the tests, you fail the class. I would not wish her upon my worst enemy.
Dr. D is an amazing lecturer and you will learn a lot from her class. There's lots of extra credit opportunities available but exams are extremely tough and very application based. Her class is flipped with a Tophat assignment for each lecture, which gives you tons of comprehensive practice problems for exams. Be prepared to work.
Poor lecturer, has poorly organized slides and a very strange grading system where you have to get a minimum score in HW, exams, etc. Yelled at us when exam grades were low, and exam questions were worded very strangely. There are no benefits to taking her.
Professor D. is a very good lecturer that makes sure we understand the material. There are a lot of homework assignments but they serve as good practice for the exams. Her exams are pretty hard since all questions are application based, so make sure you know the material very well.
simply just a condescending and rude professor when asking for help. she lectured pretty well honestly, but her content was all over the place and teaching was disorganized! avoid overall honestly and made students feel like crap after everyone did not do well on one test and blamed it on the students.
Dr. D is an amazing professor. Her lectures are recorded which are so helpful to look back at and study from. Her tests are very manageable and the one dropped exam is super helpful. She teaches very to the point. Strongly recommend her!
Dr. D is great, but she is tough. The low ratings she is given are not that fair, because she does a lot for her students and is an amazing lecturer. She can be intimidating, but as long as you try hard and do your best she is wonderful! The course is easy if you study the lectures thoroughly and listen to her speak, and LOTS OF EXTRA CREDIT!!
Spring 2023:She's a fun person & made the class even more enjoyable than it already was! Optional final, if you take it then you're stuck w the grade, it was a bunch of open-ended questions (completely diff than exams), but it rlly increased my grade! We could not see any of our exams but we could ask her to review certain questions in office hours
The lectures were disorganized, and she just read off the slides. The 2nd and 3rd modules were flipped. She offers 13 extra credit points, but it's impossible to achieve because she asks questions not covered in readings and lectures and you have to get an average of 85%. She is also super condescending and unapproachable.
Engaging lectures, very friendly and personable. Just the quizzes are insanely difficult, and you can only see what you missed if you go to her in office hours. You don't get the quizzes back ever, which I think is ridiculous. Great woman, just hard tests
Flipped classroom, so you can skip... but shouldn't. 3 HEAVY exams + optional final. Homework and in-class TH count as some bonus points if you average >85% on them. She's intense... but you get used to it.
Dr. Damiani was an passionate professor, I will give her that. The things I learned in this class were very valuable and honestly quite intriguing. But, your grade is dependant on quizzes that are worth very small amounts so there is little to no room for error. She is also almost impossible to reach outside of class and never responds to emails.
Best lecturer at Pitt. You MUST review your notes consistently to do well on quizzes, which make up >80% of your grade (6 quizzes + 1 class assignment, 20 pts each). Each quiz has 21 points but is graded out of 20, so you can get a bonus point. HW and review modules give 2 bonus points each if you do well (>85%, which is easy). Hard but worth it!
She has an extremely bad attitude and doesn't care about her student's failures or successes. Homework and attendance are only extra credit and her flipped modules in addition to her grading scale only set you up for failure unless you do well on her tests. Her tests are extremely difficult and harder than all her homework and in-class activities.
She's super condescending and always lectured us on what we were doing wrong instead of helping us. She is also not approachable and makes it seem like she doesn't care about her students.
Dr. D is very upfront, but I loved her! She records her lectures and has good practice questions in HW/recitation which she sometimes puts word for word on exams. Final is optional. Def recommend for Bio 2!
Taught this class as if we were all expert microbiologists. She was super condescending and several of us were afraid of her to even ask for help. She teaches this class like it is immunology, even her own TAs don't like her and publicly told us. Switching to flipped lectures one month after the term was a horrible idea, save your sanity please!
She was terrible. Honestly stay away from her. Her TAs are amazing but her tests were super hard and she was rude when trying to reach out to her.
The class was tough, but unstuckstudy ai really helped with study prep. The lectures were hit-or-miss, but staying engaged and using the free resources made it worthwhile.
Her own TA's said she wasn't teaching the class well and didn't have good things to say about her, that should say enough
I honestly really enjoyed Dr. D's class, which might be a hot take. She pushed us all to become better students and test takers. You 100% get out what you put into her class, so if you're willing to work hard, you will do well and learn a lot. She can be intimidating to reach out to about questions, but at least now I have thick skin, lol.
Dr.D is a kind and engaging teacher with high expectations. Her class is LECTURE-HEAVY, with nightly readings and CHALLENGING exams. TopHat questions impacted your grade, and the "standard" grading system can make it hard for an A/B. Homework is manageable, and she encourages critical thinking. Recitation attendance is mandatory! Utilize the UTA's!
Grading system is a little odd, but it is not too difficult to get an A as long as you attend class and work to understand the material. Use the UTAs!!! She can seem intense during lecture but she is very approachable. Lots of resources available for quiz studying and an optional final. Take her if you can!
Dr. D is an amazing lecturer and you will genuinely learn if you pay attention and put the work in. Her tests were fair if you study well. My biggest vice with her was her grading system, it kinda sucks. If you're very concerned about your gpa, I wouldn't take it with her
A very awesome professor, it is so sad to know that she is leaving. But, her lectures were very fun to attend (as in we learned a lot). Yes, she is strict and can be a bit blunt but she wants the best for us all and provided the resources we needed to succeed. It was a matter of us having to use it or not.
honestly she's not a bad professor, there are just things she does that make you wonder why. 1. her grading system: if you are worried about you're gpa DO NOT take her. clear grading system with no exceptions. 2. Questions: she comes of very rude when asked questions in lecture and recitation 3. She will literally not respond to your emails
She has challenging exams and they are lengthy. She teaches immunology and microbiology materials. Grading is terrible.
Do not take her!!!! She is extremely rude and condescending during lectures. She would get mad at students when the class did not understand the material that was taught to us 5 minutes prior. If you go to her for one on one help she is much better and thoroughly explains the material.
Although the class was challenging, she was an excellent lecturer. She didn't simply read from the slides. She was a little sassy/defensive when answering questions or when the class didn't vocally understand a concept. One downside is that you must study everything from the unit, as even a 5-minute assigned video may be on the test.
Goes super fast paced, gets frustrated at students easily
She's not supportive, and her sarcasm can feel offensive. Class is for those with a strong bio background. No extra credit, no curve, and she doesn't use averages—your grade is based on the lowest category. Avoid the optional final—it will lower your grade. I have straight As, and this was my only B.
