If you think this class is too much work than you shouldnt be in college. One article to read a week and then a few q's about it, a few tests that are easy if you just scan your notes, and one paper. I had to drop for other reasons but it was easy and interesting. you will learn a lot.

Wow. Out of all the classes I took this term, I never missed one of my soc classes. Just for the fact that Pettus made it so intriguing to hear about sociology! She tells great stories, and easily relates complicated terms to everyday life. A concept that helped me learn. Tests are not hard if you study for even like 30 mins only before an exam!

I love Candy...she is the 2nd best professor I have had at OCC. Her class is interesting, she gets excited about the subject. She is a fair teacher who tells you what is expected and does not baby you like some teachers or throw random assignments to you at the end of the semester. Take this class .. or any of her classes.

Excellent instructor! She loves class discussion and she treats her students as equals- something that is hard to find from a professor. Additionally, she applies the course material to everyday experiences that anyone can understand. If you come to class, review your notes casually, and do your work, you are almost GUARANTEED an A!

She is the BEST professor ever. She is such a great person. I actually enjoyed coming to her class in the SUMMER. Tests are mostly based on her notes.

Interesting lectures (examples involve from personal experience). No tricks on exam, everything's straight forward: notes, examples from lectures, concepts from homework, sometimes from the book (No need to read any book to get "A" if do evething mentioned above correctly.) Attend class everyday for credit. One thing to look out for: TERM PAPER.

she's funny and uplifting. if you pay attention to what she has to say she will tell you 95% of what you need to for the tests. starts off more difficult but eases up toward the end of the class. cheers!

Candy is one of the best professors that I have come across in college...She lays all of the requirements out on the line for the students...very easy to get an A if you just follow directions. She uses the best examples to get the point across and talks about her children a lot! Very cute! :)

If you are good at remembering terms and good at critical thinking, take her for sure. But her tests are pretty hard sometimes, I studied ahead and like 3hours a day. I still got a B, which I m very pissed at.

Oh my gosh... SHE IS THE BEST TEACHER EVER! I really enjoy her class and am thinking of taking other classes with her. She is very straight forward, there are no surprises on the tests, the activities and projects are fun and she is very funny and approachable, I luv her! She is my favorite teacher and I'll never forget anything she has taught me!

By far one of the best instructors I have ever had. The class is extremely easy, but that's not why it's a great class. It's really fun, this is the only class I enjoyed going to every time. She's very nice and interesting. Lectures are interesting, videos are good, assignments are quick. This class actually got me considering Sociology as a major.

Easy class if you do what she asks - it is all on paper aka syllabus.....super helpful, pay attention, go to class = easy. Also, she tells really interesting stories about her family as examples..recommended.. :)

She is very interesting and funny when she lectures. But her grading tactics are extremely hard. I got 5 A's and a C! in this class. The worst thing is.. i tried my hardest in this class and got the worst grade. Shes really nice but i suggest a different professor if you want the grade you deserve.

I took her class during winter so her class was a bit more harder than if i would've taken it during the Fall or Spring semester. Her class is entertaining and she tells jokes that'll help you remember some things for the test. She grades hard on the paper, but if you don't do it last minute and actually try, I think it'll be alright.

Do the homework, and don't procrastinate on the 4 page Social Problem paper and you should do fine. Her lectures are interesting and she tells stories about her own life to incorporate the teaching with real life. She's super funny, and a bit of a tomboy. I definitely recommend her to anyone who wants to learn in a fun environment.

What is with these fools below me? Her class is not boring at all! She keeps class interesting with funny anecdotes and is completely fair. If she has to miss a class, she'll delay the test - or if there's not enough time to cover all the material, she won't test you on it. The class is kick ass. Take it.

Professor Pettus is an excellent teacher. She is very Knowledgeable in this subject. Her class is not boring. Yes, you have to pay attention, but if your not able to pay attention in class and act like and adult, you shouldn't be in college. She is always available for her students. Tests are easy if you pay attention and do the reading.

Great instructor and very easy to relate to. Her lectures are NOT boring!! They are actually entertaining. There is only 1 paper due at the end, and she is there to help you with constructing it and gives you advice on your rough drafts. Good and nice professor!!

Tests are easy as long as you study and the research paper is a joke- I wrote it in one day and i got a 96. The only thing that sucks is 10 point deduction every time you miss class. Good teacher!

Candy was the best teacher ever. Sociology 180 with her was probably one of the most interesting classes I have ever taken. She really enjoys teaching and likes taking opinions from the class. Candy Pettus was the best teacher I had this semester at OCC. She is really funny and keeps the subject matter interesting with real life scenarios. She is a tough grader, and this class requires doing some work. There is homework and one short term paper but the work load is no where near impossible. TAKE THIS CLASS!!!

This class is very interesting; however, if you're a terrible studier, chances are you will not pass the class. about 15-20% of the tests are based on theoretical paradigms; failure to know them WILL result in a bad grade on the test. the best you probably get is a C if you do not know the theories. Otherwise, take this class if u like challenges

Easiest class ever. Are you kidding me. I hate sociology, just needed a GE requirement, took in the the "fast paced" intersession and took zero notes and got an A. I did have to take about 30 mins out of my life to write our 1 paper

Easy teacher. Gives studyguides. Explains well. Get points for attendance and homework. Only 3 test- she gives studyguies and the papers takes time. Easy A. Other students are lazy. Loves whats she does she should teach honors/ makes the class interesting.

Great class with great topics. The course work requires a great deal of studying and should you need help make an appoitment to see her. This is a must. Otherwise, great professor who delivers the topic well. Never boring.

One of the Best Professor At Orange Coast. This is a college course that you need to study for. Candice gives you everything you need. The only thing you have to do is the work and it is no hard. Candy is a great teacher- you will learn a lot from her. She doesn't take attendance, so if you read the book and use her online lecture notes, you'll be in great shape. This is a fantastic class. There is no doubt this professor is a challenge, but if you are up to it you will learn more than you could ever imagine. I've heard the other sociology teachers are so-so but because she has a degree in Anthro this class is perfect! Only downside- tests are based on application of knowledge- not memorization!

Lecture is amazing for a subject I have little interest in. Tests are ridiculously easy, I studied for 45 minutes before the tests and got an A. She did not clarify enough guidelines for the paper would be my only complaint; many students didn't realize you have to focus on EXACTLY 2 causes, no more than that. Otherwise awesome class, take it!

Great teacher. Took her for the Summer or 09, very extreme, four hours for five days a week, for one month, fast paced and pretty much easy. So long as you do the writing assignments, which isn't much, mostly your views and some facts about the reading. Not much reading either. I recommend her, she is funny.

This class was pretty interesting, and I learned a lot. Candy is very straight-forward and don't expect to get any sympathy from her if you mess up, because she tells it like it is. Overall I enjoyed this class and even though attendance isn't mandatory, I suggest showing up. If you want to actually learn something take this class!

One my favorite teachers ever. Takes topic very serious, studying is a MUST to pass her class because tests are hard, extra credit offered throughout course, and group discussions are interesting. Powerpoint done well and discusses along the way. Copy notes, very useful. Very funny, especially when she brings up stories.

She's a fun teacher. I was nervous from all the comments I read on here prior to her course. But rest assured, as long as you listen actively during the lectures, do NOT procrastinate on the thesis paper, and use the study guide before exams, you'll do fine. I got a B in the class.

She was a very good teacher, taught us everything from the book and always provided an example. Tests were easy if you studied and the homework was interesting. This class really opens your perspective on things. It is a lecture hall and you can go and leave anytime that you wanted. She can be a little bit weird with your hw grades though.

She's cool and clarity is great lectures are pretty interesting but tests are a mind game i read the book and did online quiz's studied really hard and still didn't do well on tests , if you are a bad test taker do not take this course, if you can write good papers which she likes you can probably pass with a B

She's there to help. Her lectures focus on concepts and not just dry facts; this class will get you ready for upper-division work. Take it!

If you're willing to work, A is very likely. She says she loves giving C's, but she's joking. She's totally willing to help you get an A. I love how she thinks her name is a "stripper name" being "Candy".

I LOVED Candy's class. Not only are her lectures interesting, she is HILARIOUS. The course is a little challenging because you are expected to actually know the material, but if you do the reading and attend the lectures, the tests are easy. She also gives a study guide for all the exams, and it is very helpful.

Expects you to go "above and beyond what's required" to receive an A or B. Topics are interesting, lectures are boring. This teacher made me re-consider my major as sociology.

I would liken taking this class to watching a stand up comedian talk about sociology in a passionate, intelligent, and thought-provoking way. She is the best teacher I've ever had and I've been full time at OCC since Fall 09. If you plan to transfer or go on to grad school, take this teacher as she prepares you for all that higher ed has to offer.

She's passionate about her subject, nice, funny, intelligent, and really courteous. Not the easiest class, though. Tests can be hard, but she'll provide help, if you ask for it, and answer all your questions.

She is clear about what she says. She is somewhat hard due to the fact you have to remember a lot and be able to connect key concepts with the reading. If you want a challenge then take her. If you do all your work and sutdy you should do just fine.

She's interesting, sometimes she gets a little boring. This is not an easy class. Her exams are EXTREMELY hard. You need to study from the textbooks (but that's just the basics..), lectures, and connect them to the outside world. It's not just reading and memorizing. You will get around a C or higher if you study. Not an easy A.

She is a highly clearful speaker. She has office hours if you need help, Or you can set up an appointment. Her tests aren't easy. She really prepares you for upper division classes. You'll have to work hard for your A. Concepts must be connected with the outside world in order to do well on her tests. Overall, a great teacher. you'll learn much.

2 midterms= 200 points, final=100 points, research paper= 100 points,2 class essays 100 points total, 2 hw assignment 50 points total. Not an easy class. I can't believe the comments saying this class or the tests are hard. This is college. If you've ever taken a hard class in your life you will realize that this is not hard, its just challenging as its supposed to be. Great professor, enthusiastic, hard working. if you think this class is hard you really need to re-evaluate your college level goals. Seriously, she tells you exactly what she expects of you from day 1 and continues to repeat herself almost every single day. Just because she doesn't spoon feed you doesn't meant this class isn't legitimately easy . Use your notes and book and LISTEN to her.

Grades poorly, if you don't write what she's looking for specifically you get points off. Tests are intense. Try to avoid her if you can but if you do have her, read the book and take critical notes.

I took her for 150 and 180. In 150 it is pretty easy just do all the reading and study the terms verbatim and your good. 180 was harder go to her office for in-class essay and she gives it to you but her tests are by far the hardest part of that class- look out for the social perspective questions.

Class is a real challenge. But she wants to prepare you for the UC or CSU systems. IF you pay attention you will be fine, extra credit is offered. If you are a slacker, DO NOT TAKE THIS CLASS. I assure you if you don't like to study you will fail his class.

She is inspiring and energetic. She talks about life, not about books and theories only. Stories about her children and husbands will lighten your day. Text book is cheap and efficient because you use them. She gives you chances to enhance your grades. Strict deadline policy but she will remind you.

Here are the class statistics for her 1st exam: A 3% B 9.6% C 23% D 25% F 39%. The second exam was even harder. The majority of her test questions are worded to trick students. She is good at teaching, and will provide a lot of extra help if you ask, but her tests are horrible. It is in your best interest to take a different class if you want an A.

mrs pettus is very helpful. although she is an extremely strict grader, she will answer any questions you have and help you with assignments and the big research paper. she tells alot of interesting stories to help you relate with the material. she has 3 tests, 2 inclass essays (which you will ace if you study it before-hand) and a research paper.

She expects you to work hard and read the material (shocker, i know). I'm a single mom working full time and I've managed a B so far in the class. Utilize her office hours and her STUDY GROUPS prior to exams. Probably would have gotten a C instead of an A if I didn't go. Glad I went! Overall great teacher, very helpful, easy to understand.

I was one of the 3% to get an A in her class. I didn't read the book but I took good notes (attendance=mandatory) and I paid attention in class. She posts her power points on her website. I highly recommend you download those and take your own notes. You WILL learn in her class! She is also VERY helpful. She offers study sessions if you ask.

I did not like Candy at first, but once I realized how helpful and easy to talk to I warmed up to her. Everything she says in class is important to take note on. Also, she is fair. She makes you hard work for your grade, but once your done with the class you will realize how much you have learned from her.

Candy is very intelligent and will make you work really hard for your grade.The tests are the hardest tests I have ever taken. I am a really hard worker and I studied a ton for the tests, but only managed to get Cs on them. She is very helpful but ONLY TAKE HER CLASS IF YOU ARE WILLING TO WORK REALLY REALLY HARD. ONLY 3 PEOPLE GOT As IN MY CLASS.

I absolutely loved her! She is hilarious and really got me into Sociology. She is one of those professors who truly enjoys what she does and works her butt off to help her students succeed. I did spend a lot of time working and studying for her class but I didn't mind... she made me love every part of it! Take her class!!! You'll love her too!

Prof. Pettus is a great teacher. The class is a lot of work, so plan on spending quality time on it. Just finished the summer session in 4 weeks. You must pay attention and read the book. She expects college level work out of everyone. She's very fair on her grading. And, she's pretty funny in her story-telling!!!!

took the 4 week soc100 course over the summer w/ Candy. even though the class was 5 hours daily, time flew by with her hilarious stories. she's a really great person, and will do anything she can to answer your questions/help you. i spent a LOT of time on this class and got an A. it's doable, just lots of work. be prepared to work ur butt off!!

One of my favorite Professors and classes. She knows her stuff and works very hard to bring it to you. She is helpful always in her office as well. She doesn't tolerate BS or lazy, texting students which I loved. I will miss her and her style. She is tough though on grading so do the work.

I like her,she knows her stuff, and I like her energy. Yeah she's not going to make the test dull and easy, so understand the concepts fully. Some of the questions on the last test were tricky, you really have to hash on them, it could be one word that throws you off. In conclusion I enjoyed this class, so dont worry just stay on top of your work.

Pettus was a good teacher but very strict on grading. If you do decide to take her, please remember to read the sections for the in class essays carefully. She's really fun and knows what she's talking about. Study A LOT if you can. she gave me 7 extra credit points to pass the class with a C. I wouldn't recommend her if you want an easy A.

If you want to do well, make sure you read the book and do your modules. She shows a lot of videos that take up class time, which I liked. Although she is intimidating, her class is not as bad as people think it is.

I'm currently taking Soc 100 with Candice and I must say I really respect her style of teaching. She's professional and clear-cut about what she expects from you, but her lectures are engaging and she is very helpful. Ask questions during class! The class is somewhat difficult if you don't understand the material. Candy is constantly reminding you of deadlines which was also helpful. There is an essay which was quite hard for me, but the good thing is she will read your rough drafts. The tests consists of more scenarios then definitions. Overall there were only three tests and an essay.

Attendance does not count, she wont drop you she makes it very clear you don't need to come if you don't want to be there, just show up for test days. We had to write a essay about social issue. Don't skip class. If you do the reading before each class, then you'll be prepared for her lectures. I studied for each test. Your grade depends on how much effort you put in. Not an easy class but you will learn soooo much. Even though I got a B, I recommmend taking this class!

It's a very lecture heavy class, shes very short and impatient for students who come to her office hours. however, she's very intelligent and knows what she's talking about. Pettus seems strict but is actually very caring. She always pushed us to work on assignments & study ahead of time. Professor Pettus's lectures are unbelievably easy to understand and are thorough. For my exams, I just have to listen to her lectures, finish the homework, and look over the study guide which gets me a solid A on each exam. She's down to Earth, funny, and really understands our generation. I recommend her 1000%.

(the kind that says theres only 30 problems but you have to fill up the bar and then it counts as one problem, so technically 50) the book is also very expensive to purchase.

I had her in Spring 2022, and I would say she was an adequate professor. The class is textbook reliant, and you can watch her lectures for more information. Her test are thorough with few challenging questions, it is doable. The essay was a challenge, and if you are struggling with the format just refer to one of the example paper she provides.

Professor is good at job and passionate about it, but many of the things that would be on exams are somewhat miniscule things that you have to remember. Nice woman, but I could go on and on about how many things in this class absolutely frustrated me to no end. I would not take again but I cannot stress enough that she is nice and likes to teach

I loved Professor Pettus, if you want to learn this is an amazing class. Homework was a bit heavy but it's a large assignment she gives about a month to do so completely manageable if you do some every week. Lectures were engaging and some test questions were taken directly from lecture while majority was from the homework. Cheat sheet is allowed.

Second course with Prof. Pettus, both classes were great! Lectures w/ powerpoint are posted and very beneficial to watch. Tests were a bit harder with some free response questions but it's just based on the reading from discussion posts. Cheat sheet also allowed on tests.

Really great professor who is very clear about what you need to do to succeed. She assigns a lot of homework, but as long as you space it out accordingly you'll be fine. In my opinion, doing just the homework assigned alongside the recharge option available is enough to earn you an A in the class. It's not hard, just time-consuming.
