Freshly minted PhD - a very soft touch.
awful...lectures were dry and boring and she talked with the TA during the ENTIRE midterm so i could barely concentrate...interesting course but she doesn't contribute much to its enjoyment
Can't work the overhead, overhead notes are vaguely intelligible, lectures to her left side of the room, lectures include fact recall questions from readings instead of information.
The worst prof EVER! Boring, fails to get the point across in a concise manner. She reads from a script but often gets lost stuttering. Lecture notes are hard to understand and there is no punctuation or anything. Horrible in every aspect.
Not helpful at all. Not approachable and reads the lecture off sheets of paper.
She doesn't use any punctuation in her overheads so you can't understand any of the notes. She is boring and incoherent in her lectures. Completely unapproachable unless you wanna be accused of blackmail. Horrible horrible teacher.

This woman expects REALLY stupid levels of work - go read 500 pages per week. Then she does NOTHING. If you want so much as a "ok" on your work you'll be disappointed. No human sense (common sense), no academic ability. Should NOT be teaching!!!

this website ask you to "rate" your professor - where do you go, as in Dr. Camcastle's case - you do NOT rate the professor. Dreadful! Unfair to students by letting talkers talk her round while the majority get on with it.
I really like her. She is helpful, she knows what she is talking about, she makes her requirments very clear and she is very supportive and concerned for each student. She makes a point of learning your name and making each persons learning experiance important to her which makes me work harder than i might have otherwise.
Took this distant ed course, term is not even finished yet but so compelled to rate her now so others dont make the same mistake i did!!! This course is ridiculous!!! Essays are worth 50% and final is 50%. The course ware is 2 huge books about the size of a phone book. The amount of reading required is ridiculous. TA marks hard. WOrst class!!
Took this distant ed course. Term not over yet but feel compelled to warn others not to take this course!!! essays are worth 50%, final 50%. 2 texts are the size of phone books!! reading is ridiculous!! worst class ever! ta marks hard too
Really liked her, she's funny (dry humour) and was intensely interested in the topic - the environment. I found her to be approachable and kind. The amount of reading required was reasonable. I would take a class with her again for sure.
Unique professor, Class was not what I thought it would be. It seemed like an introductory social studies class. She runs the class like an elementary class. Also, the last province to join confederation was Newfoundland, not BC like she says.
Really nice and marks easy!
She is a very outgoing, wonderful teacher. The midterm is very easy if you read your notes and attend class discussions. The tutorials are very interesting and easy marks. Canadian Studies 160 is overall an great course to study!
The class was very easy, felt she could've pushed us a bit more.
Very helpful prof. The info needed for midterm was all in the notes and reading. Everything was pretty clear and she's very aproachable if you need help. Would definatly take a class with her again.
the class was useless, a ton of reading. She gave no real notes in class but rather had us discuss stuff in groups then made us sit through 2 hrs each class of student presentations....didn't pay for my peers to teach me!
How this women is a professor at a university will always be a mystery for me. Worst Prof ever.
I think Cara is getting a pretty tough go here on RMP. She isn't as bad as the ratings suggest. Political ethics could be much more interesting if there wasn't such an intense focus on the enviro perspective. The powerpoints were weak and impossible to take notes from. TA could have had more direction. I found it interesting though.
took poli of canadian arctic, a subject i know nothing about. regurgitated many topics that would be on tests throughout the semester so that by the time we did projects, we would know how to more less answer them just from talking about the same stuff over and over again. made it super easy to get a good mark
Cara is a top researcher and while her lecture can be a bit dry, she does present the material in a very accessible way. She also goes over crucial material several times and the exam questions are pretty much given to you when she focuses in on a certain debate or topic. Definitely learned a lot and was quite surprised with how well I did.
Took Canadian Environmental Politics with Cara. Material was interesting but her lectures are excruciating and they will always go the full 4 hours. There is way too much childish group work in-class as well. 20 percent of your grade depends on whether your peers decide to do their readings or pay attention in lecture or not, that's bs.
Cara is a professor who really wants to help her students understand what they are learning. Always willing to stop lecture to hear your questions or critiques. She is a fair marker and her exams are so straight forward, ie. she gives you the questions before hand. Only thing I hated about her class was all the group work, was pointless.
Cara is one of the best profs I've had at SFU! She's super sweet and always willing to help. She gives a reasonable amount of readings & highlights the important pages. Her exams are pretty easy because she gives an awesome review handout WITH ALL THE QUESTIONS ON IT! Only downside is that she plays a lot of videos. This is my 3rd class with Cara.
Her lectures are all skeleton notes and speaks so quietly, can't hear. Despite so many complaints by students, the prof never alters her lecturing style; it is almost like she does not seem to care whatsoever. The textbook only came in to use for the midterm and final when she gave us the definitive review. Also, she never answers anyone on Canvas.
A very caring and knowledgeable woman. She is passionate and what she says in class will be on the exam. DO the work sheets.
She's super nice and knows her stuff but she's too quiet!!! She also responds to emails right away! avoid sitting and the back and you'll be fine. If she talked a little louder i probably would've given her a 5 tbh
Quiet, classes have never gone the full duration, an hour of class is group work while stands outside the room, poor reviews of the chapter, does not lecture
She gives women higher marks and the men low marks. She makes you do a final exam in class. What a joke!!!!
Avoid her at all costs. She has no idea what the heck she is doing.
Has no respect for men!!!
Would not recommend any Poli Sci students taking Cara Camcastle. Unclear instructions for how she wants things done, feels like a first year science course. Be ready to regurgitate useless information on tests and she deducts marks for personal beliefs.
She was okay, it seemed like she always had something better to do from the way she was always on her phone in class. All in all wasnt bad but definitely wouldnt take her again
Worst teacher in SFU. I have no idea how she can even be a professor? Feminism told her to hate men and strong independent women.
My Grandma can lecture better than this so-called Teacher.
If you already registered in her class then withdraw as quickly as possible. It is not worth the damage to ones GPA!!!! God bless anyone who will not take her.
If one wants to ruin their GPA, learn bias knowledge, marked unfairly, waste their time and money, take unclear lecture notes. Then this so-called teacher is the right person. The department even hates her marking scheme.
Cara is super sweet and she brought in a really interesting guest lecturer. Her grading seemed slightly arbitrary at times, but she did give more feedback than most profs do in this department.
Terrible prof. I transfered to SFU from U of T to finish my Masters in political science and Cara was one of my first profs there. Super long lectures, and she didnt give clear instructions on the final paper. Ended up giving half of the class Cs because the question was worded so badly
Really tells her life story when u ask 'how r u'. She's such a sweet person but cannot teach for her life. Hard to get an A but B is easily given. Lecture style: reads off a piece of paper without even looking up. Does not facilitate or fact check debates.. Would love to have her as my grandmother but not as prof.
The best professor at SFU. Such an easy marker and the readings are relevant to lecture content! I've taken almost all of her courses at SFU and she's honestly such a sweet professor. She's always understanding of personal circumstances and gives extensions accordingly and she's really knowledgeable. Her expectations are very reasonable.
Cara is the greatest prof I've had at SFU. I've taken almost every class she has to offer and they are all great. She is quiet, but very knowledgeable and gets straight to the heart of the course concepts. Kind and always accessible I suggest anyone take one of her courses.
If you're already registered withdraw immediately. Horrible Teacher !!
Cara Camcastle marks hard, provides little idea on her essay topics, she provides and spins the essay topics to confuse her students. She has a midterm and final exam IN CLASS !! Chose another professor if you want to have a good grade.
She is great.
Some people really seem to like her, it's easy to do well in her class so that might be part of it. TBH the good grade isn't worth the painful lectures... I attended them more often than she did. She's clearly very passionate about her subject matter but the curriculum is very unclear, so is assignment criteria/instructions.
She is such a good professor! Very friendly and approachable. Assignments are very straightforward and as long as you can grasp basic concepts, it is very easy to do well in her class!
Does not take teaching very seriously. Does not give clear criteria for assignments, usually gives entire table groups the same mark/no feedback as if she hadn't even read our essays. Often puts on a movie then leaves the room to go on her phone for an hour, or dismisses a 2-hour class in 20 minutes. Issues low grades with no explanation. 1/5
This bimbo has no idea what she is doing. She marks unfairly and is biased with her marking. Please avoid her unless you want to ruin your GPA. Cara pretends to be nice but when it comes to lecturing and marking has no idea of evaluating students and the class topics.
Don't waste your money on her; you'll get more value spending it on a golddigger.
Very fair in her grades and shes extremely knowledgeable in the course topics. She wants you to succeed. She won't spoon feed you hence the bad reviews. It's easy to get an A if you just do what she asks of you.
Don't take this class if you're expecting interesting lectures. She reads off the slides and doesn't do anything to make this class worth attending. There are two group assignments and one final essay. The essay topics are similar, and she expects 10-12 pages. Tutorials just go over the lecture. Only upside is she tells you what is on the exams.
Only rating this class as difficult because of how absent and disorganized she is. Slides are terrible, misspelled, missing words. Lecture and tutorial is "get into groups and discuss the textbook questions" and then she' leaves. Actual quote: "First Nations don't just live on reserves, they live in urban areas too!" Yes, we are in your class...
Cara is a horrible lecturer! Her slides are the most useless thing I have ever seen made by a prof at SFU. She is so disorganized and the things that she lectures are not even on the slides itself. She has a script written for herself and she just stares at it and reads it off. Do not take it with her ever she will probably ruin your passion for it
oh my goodness, cara is the the worst prof i've ever had. her slides are so sparse and she reads off a script without looking up which she doesn't release. studying is difficult cause you have no idea what was even covered in class. this lady worships the textbook though so if you can somehow copy-paste it into your memory, you'll do fine
Cara is a bit of a mixed bag. On the one hand she is nice, knowledgeable and a very fair marker. On the other hand she is very disorganized, and teaches right from the textbook. Participate in class and you'll be fine.
Dr. Camcastle's online lectures range from incomprehensible to just reading off the textbook. That being said, she is very nice, marks pretty easily, and is not picky about criteria for papers at all. She seems to struggle with online teaching, and I imagine she would be better in class. You do learn a lot from the textbook, and it is an easy A.
Cara is a quite an understanding and nice professor, HOWEVER her lectures are extremely boring, if you don't attend lectures her powerpoints will make absolutely NO sense and she LITERALLY just reads off of the textbook. It just feels like she doesn't know her own lesson plan well enough to teach it without reading the textbook word for word.
Cara's online lectures are very uninspiring. She reads directly from the textbook, often seeming uncertain about what she is saying. The whole class is taught directly to the textbook, with the odd question about guest speakers coming up in quizzes. Gives no feedback for writing, and is extremely disorganized.
I would not recommend this course unless you're knowledgable in local government/politics. She is a somewhat tough marker, and it is hard to know what shes looking for in assignments. That being said she is also very unorganized as a professor probably the least organized I've ever experienced. She is a nice lady, but the course was not great.
To say Cara Camcastle is a mess, would be an understatement. I would not recommend any course with her. Shes knowledgeable, friendly and understanding but thats it. She knows her stuff, theres no doubt but shes never prepared for class and is constantly reading off her script. Avoid her if you can. Her marking? Tough and no rubric. Good luck.
very boring when teaching spend a lot of time in discussion without give enough context
I've taken 2 classes online with Cara, and while she is nice and approachable, her online lectures are short, vague and hard to follow along with. She inspires little enthusiasm in courses I need to take for credits and want to take out of interest. That being said, her classes are easy and all follow the same format, 2 papers and some quizzes.
She is very helpful and very understanding professor
Don't waste your time watching her lectures her lectures would only make you more confused, and all she does is go off topic. She is horrible at communication because she told our class that our last quiz is going to be short answer but she changed her mind and made it MC without telling the class right away.
Her English is fine and unaccented and yet she has never put together a coherent sentence. Her slides make no sense, and her words accompanying them in lecture aren't much better. Had to google most of the terms to understand what we were learning. She gives minimal assignment instructions and even though the concepts are easy, she makes it hard.
Course content is not all that complicated but you may as well not even bother showing up for the lecture, she mumbles and reads with 0 inflection from a script barely looking up all class. Just go to the tutorial and do the readings Expectations/criteria for quizzes and papers can be somewhat unclear. Gives no feedback on papers.
She's a great professor, very understanding, and accessible. She has been extremely helpful to me and has accommodated a situation out of my control throughout the semester. The course content and structure was easy to follow and a perfect mix of everything. I learned a lot and I would definitely take a class with her again.
Long and boring lectures; she rushes through so that you dont have time to take any notes. Unclear grading criteria on papers and assignments. 10 page paper on topics we merely brushed over wasnt fun. Avoid.
Cara's lectures were impossible to sit through due to her mumbling and incoherent slides. I found the topics in this class to be interesting but had no joy in learning the majority of them due to her awful teaching. Lectures do not matter, you will teach everything to yourself. 60% of my grade was based on Plato. Tough grader (not 1 A+ in class).
Camcastle is incredibly boring in lectures, and she reads off a paper when giving lectures which makes them feel very dry and hard to concentrate on. Camcastle does give good feedback if you ask for it, when grading assignments she does not provide a rubric, so it can be difficult to figure out what she is looking for. Lots of reading, beware
Camcastle's lectures are boring and dry. In order to learn the material, you essentially are teaching it to yourself. Be prepared to do lots of reading in this class. Marking is relatively easy, as long as you complete the assignment with the given requirements you will get a good grade. 2 relatively big papers are assigned in this class.
Dry lectures, zero feedback, tough grader. Do not recommend 210 with her. Essentially taught myself the class, and then did assignments on readings we barely skimmed over. Only positive is her 3 small quizzes were based directly off her weekly study guides.
Cara is a very kind person. But she does not know how to address a lecture hall the size of pol 100. by the end of the term probably 1/10th of people showed to lecture for they were just that unapplicable to the course material. Exam questions were either given before hand or open book. Overall you'll rely on google and the textbook. Do. Not. Take.
Cara is a nice professor. However, she provides no emphasis on her lectures on what exactly we should study. However, for her three quizzes in POL 253 she does tell you what questions are on it beforehand. Very difficult to stay in engaged with lectures and basically reads off her textbook
Worst university-level professor I have ever met. She reads off her slides, causing so much confusion. She would have a slide titled "1927" and points such as "Women issues" and "Monumental impact", and not explain anything. Instead, she'd go on and on about random political issues, and explain information, completely unrelated to the course.
Camcastle does not know how to teach, the course itself is not too bad as long as you have a good TA that you can ask questions to. Half the class doesn't go to her lectures because all she does is read off slides, the textbook is more helpful than her. The workload isn't bad though: 3 quizzes, a short paper, and a term paper.
RMP needs an "avid slides reader" tag for this one. I attended maybe 6 lectures and paid attention in 2. All you gotta do is read the textbook and understand the concepts well--some tutorial discussions were based on applying concepts to real life situations. She's nice but seems more passionate about research and penguins than teaching.
Cara is one of the worst professors I have come across. She reads off her slides, where there is little to no explanation of examples or concepts. The textbook single-handedly carried me through this class, as lectures were not necessary. Some class discussions helped in answering study questions. If you are good at self-teaching then I recommend.
The tests and essays have no rubrics makes it really hard to know how to answer the questions and where your marks are going, and her lectures are very boring though she is nice.
Her class lectures were a bit confusing and difficult to follow. Best advice I have for her classes is to read the textbook and make good notes.
Oh my god! Never in my life have I met a professor as boring and pointless as Cara Camcastle. Her lectures are absolutely useless - she reads off her slides, word for word, and expects us to understand what she means. Furthermore, her exams are impossible. She does not cover the information necessary to pass the exams. The worst professor ever!
Incredibly useless and incoherent lectures, as well as her grading guidelines. Cancels classes on her convenience, and uses her phone during class. Had her as TA in the tutorial as well. Wish I had the actual TA, I would have actually learned something. Textbook is required. She is compassionate and approachable, but her teaching is absolutely poor
Extremely poor at delivering lectures. Uninspired & unpassionate cadence in her voice (MONOTONE, CONGESTED). My impression is that she is, in fact passionate about what she teaches, but I wouldn't fault anyone who disagrees; her slide-reading habit makes attending lecture effectively non-imperative. She has gained a rep among POLI students for this
Assignments are easy and she means well... but I have no idea how the department allows her to stick around. She probably has some of the worst lectures I've seen at SFU.
Sometimes it actually sounded like she was having a stroke when teaching? She was very mumbly and all over the place, even though she was reading from slides. And the slides themselves didnt really have a cohesive narrative: it was sorta all over the place information that needed to be explained... and then wasnt.
other reviews about her don't seem valid. not the worst teacher that I've experienced at SFU. She is caring, responds to emails quickly, and returns marks back in a timely manner. However, it might be hard to hear her if you sit at the very back. PPTs aren't informative as you're meant to read prior to class. Not the worst but not the best either.
Cara's lectures can be a bit of a drag, with her tendency to read straight off the slides. However, the textbook and discussions with the TA proved far more helpful for understanding the concepts. unstuck study was a great study tool to supplement the class material.
I've taken multiple of Cara's classes throughout the years, and the reviews on here are quite unfair. Lectures are not her strongest skill, but she's a fair marker, accessible outside of class, and cares about your learning. Be prepared to read, her assignments are heavily based on the assigned readings. Always a pleasure to be in her class.
