Doesn't go over the material very well. She flies through it. On one test 80% of the class failed & she did nothing about it - no extra credit/no curve. Definitely take someone else!!! Nice person, just not a good teacher.
Awful teacher. His not helpful AT ALL. Flies through material. Spelling counts in her class too for the practicals.
i seriously used to like biology, i even thought about making biology my major, but once i got in this class, everything flies by and her voice just makes me sleepy. nothing is clear and i end up just joking wround with my friend cause neither of us know w
she mumbles and is not clear on anything
She is very unorganized, and hard to follow.

nice person, not a good teacher. she is not clear on her lectures.

I think people are hard on the poor woman, the only reason my class is unclear is because I can't hear her teach over the other students. I have asked for her help and she was more than willing to assist me. Give her a chance guys...
She is very unclear and not very helpful. I was present when she competely ignored a student's question. She seems like nice woman, but as a teacher, I would not reccommend her class to anyone.
in class she isn't much help, but i have gone to get help during her office hours and it was very informative. she's willing to help but her lectures aren't very inforamtive.
This women is the worse teacher ive had at VCU. Her lecture notes are no helpe because none of it is on the test, if you have this prf get out when you can.
New to teaching larger lectures but makes class enjoyable. Very friendly and personable one-on-one if you deserve the respect. Misunderstood. Sometimes gets a little confused, but will review anything for you if you only ask. Should ask more people to leave because they are rude during class. Loves the subject.
GET OUT GET OUT! this class is only hard because she is so interested she crams about 3 lectures worth of material into one lecture and expects you to get it all. she will give you pre-typed up notes posted on BB but it doesnt help bc she keeps adding info. after they are posted and shows up to class with totally different notes. they arenthelpful!
she seems to know what she is talking about but she wasn't very good at explaning it -might have been better if the class wasn't so disruptive.
I wanted to kill myself in this class. SERIOUSLY... get out as soon as possible. This class alone will ruin your hole semester! Over 70% would have an F on every test. NEVER gave any extra credit worth doing. I'm so glad its over now.
She does not know how to explain the mateiral very well. Her tests are very hard and don't even come from the lectures or notes.
She seemed to be very interested in what she was teaching, just not very good at explaining the information.
HATED THIS CLASS!!! She was VERY confusing w/ the material and did not give ANY additional help. Her tests were hard, no EC, and seemed almost clueless about how to teach...
There is something wrong when over HALF the class fails every test! Awful professor. Obviously interested in Bio, but not capable of teaching. Puts info on tests that she does not talk about in class - when she specifically says info not discussed will not be tested on!
She a good teacher. She uses powerpoints and puts notes online.
I must admit, she was a nice lady. However, I don't think she knew what she was teaching! Didn't make any sense when she spoke, tests were extremely hard, and offered no additional help or extra credit. DO NOT TAKE HER!!!!
She is very nice and trys to help. Exams are hard but she doesn't make it alone, all of the professors make it together. The class in general takes lots of time, effort and a very good memory!
Horrible Teacher. Reads off of powerpoint slides that she doesn't even make (made by the book company). Any student could teach the class better than she could. On the other hand, she is a very nice, understanding teacher, but she doesn't know how to teach. Period. You have to learn by yourself.
I loved Dr Cario. She made the class a lot of fun and I learned a good deal from her AND the campbell power point presentations. She provided help before the exams and we got to bring in food for extra credit at the end of the semester. I would DEFINATLY take her again!! You will however need to study but she's very helpful.
She taught the lab portion of this class, and it was great. There's a lot of information squeezed into tests, but she does a good job going through it and is very helpful if you have questions. She knows her stuff too! And is very clear!
I had Dr. Cario for the lab portion of Anatomy. The lab was very straightforward and jam-packed with information. It is a must to come in to the lab a few extra hours a week to be successful in the class. The practicals are exactly like the quizzes she gives every week. Dr. Cario was tough, but fair, and I would definitely recommend her!
Really love her testing style. There is plenty of extra credit, if you come to class. study hard for the lab practical. This is class is not hard if you study, an A is very possible. Final exam is MORE than generous.. what a great professor.
She's great! If you study, you will get an A. No problem. You just need to put in the time...
Excellent teacher!
She is amazing! She really has a keen interest in helping students get as much out of the class as possible. The class itself has changed compared to last year, so she's had to change a lot of things, but she's doing her best under the circumstances. She really is an amazing professor! Highly recommend
For those that say she doesn't know what she is talking about, they are totally wrong. As a graduate student taking this class, she teaches like many medical school professors. They use terminology that you aren't used to and she is just preparing you for the future. The class is intense, have to keep up with the work load but she is amazing!
This is my second time taking Human Anatomy. I changed teachers. Dr. Cario is the best. She explains everything very well and has great helpful hints. I definitely remember things that I have learned. I did horrible with another teacher, but I recommend everyone to take Dr. Cario. Take Dr. Cario for lab AND lecture!
i had her just for lecture and it mos def helps to read ahead. she's super quick about posting materials and grades. gives lots of xcredit. it's not hard if you sincerely TRY. the tests r multi choice answers so it's difficult to fail them. just keep up 'cause it's a cumulative it'd b hard to "re-learn" ALLLL that. have to balance lect & lab stuff.
I had Dr. Cario for lab only (not lecture), and she was great! You could tell that she really enjoyed anatomy, and she was always willing to help with any questions. Great lab teacher.
Cario is hard and she makes the class unnecessarily complicated. She uses clickers on her tests which wouldnt be that bad if all the multiple choice questions didnt have multiple answers. If I were you I would GET OUT while you can and take someone else you will be happier in the long run trust me. RUN!!!
i freakin hate this teacher. she's by far the worst professor I've had so far. I used to love biology, but she seriously made me hate it. I changed my mind about being a bio major cuz of her. She sets a very fast pace. If you don't read the book daily and keep up you will fall behind and will never be able to catch up. It will consume your life. Ev
She is a horrible teacher. She reads off power points and goes way too fast so that you can't really write down much of what she says. Her tests are clicker, and they are multiple choice questions with multiple answers. HARDEST CLASS EVER. I barely got out with a high C, class average was way lower. If you take her, good luck. Its unnecessarilyhar
She is SO fair. If you work hard, YOU WILL get an A. She gives lots of extra credits. Take her if you want a real A in Bio. She knows her materials. Good luck.
She is very knowledgeable but does go MUCH faster than the other bio teachers. My only complaint about her class is that her tests were not from her powerpoints that she taught but instead were word for word questions from the online homework. Wish she would have made that clear b/c I had studied her notes instead.
Even if this was your only class, I still don't believe it would be possible to get an A. Something needs to be done for teachers like her. She is EXTREMELY unreasonable Drop this class DO NOT TAKE even if it means an extra semester. Try to get someone else, like Monroe. Anatomy with Cario= Epic Fail.
Dr. Cario is a nice lady and all, but she is just not a good teacher. She teaches us as if we are in graduate school. Too much info per test (6 to 7 Ch per test to be exact). If I knew like I know now, I would have taken Monroe
Professor Cario is amazing. I have never learned so much in my life! She prepares you in an entirely different way than most professors. You MUST put in the work however...come to class, GO to OPEN LAB! Do the study guides and read the book. The tables and charts in the books make excellent study guides. Make study groups! She is a quality teacher!
Work hard, spend about 10 hours a week in open lab and you will get an A. Dr.Cario is an amazing professor, her extensive knowledge of the human body will draw your attention and you will have no choice but to be interested. She is strict and does not baby her students which is a great thing. I wish she taught more bio classes.
Professor Cario is a great teacher who really knows what she's talking about. The problem is, however, that her teaching style is a bit too advanced. Too much information per exam and it's presented at a very fast pace. Getting an A is not impossible, but you REALLY have to work hard to earn it!
I don't really know where to begin. She's definitely not the best teacher for BIO 151, but I guess she's not the worse. She's definitely not clear on what's going to be on a test or not and her multi choice, multi answer is ridiculous.
Ridiculous teaching style. She tries to make her lecture class into a participation class with worksheets and group discussions. Her tests are multiple choice and multiple answer so they're more difficult than they need to be.
worst. teacher. ever. tests are ridiculous. horrible at teaching. does everything electronically. a few students' clickers haven't worked a couple times and her response was "well that's why we give out extra points at the end of the year".. which i still haven't seen proof of.
Ok so first off, I just wanted to say rate my professor should have a seperate section for each class because Bio 205 is skewing her overall grade. Isn't it weird that only 19 people in her class of 188 got an A? And 66 people got C's? Cario step it up. I barely got a B through the grace of god. So th class isn't too impossible... it just sucks.
Dr. Cario is one of the best teachers I've had here. I really dont understand why a lot of people on here are giving her a bad rep. Yes she expects you to work hard to get a good grade but shouldn't you be doing that anyway? Very helpful, very nice and the clicker questions = tons of extra points for your grade. Very good teacher.
Very nice lady, but her tests are ridiculous. Try to take someone else if you can.
This class is just hard honestly. You really have to study and put time into it. Her tests weren't bad, pretty much came straight from notes and she gave partial credit for each question so that was AWESOME! The final on the other hand was ridiculously hard. She's a nice lady though.
Serious students only! READ ! I wish someone had wrote this for me... LECTURE: Hit ground running! Find other serious students! Read text before class! be organized: good notes, esp for the final, organize group study several days before each exam. LAB: simple ASK SEVERAL PRECEPTORS what to do. Thats it! You'll be very glad you read this! Thx Cario
This teacher is the worst. Average grade first 2 tests were 54. Not sure why she is even allowed to continue teaching when 40% of students fail. Dont take this teacher
Great class--excellent professor. She is very patient and will help you with any questions you may have. A very kind and generous person.
Basic Human Anatomy is just an extremely hard class, no matter which professor you have. Attend open labs, several days a week. It helps to go with a friend who can quiz you on the models/charts.
Dr. Cario looks like Professor McGonagall from Harry Potter! It's like Hogwarts Academy in Anatomy Lab. She knows her stuff though, but don't skip lab more than once. VCU Human Anatomy is tiers above a lot of other college's general anatomy offerings, avail yourself.
This is the worst teacher by far!!!! PLEASE STUDENTS, do not take this plant physiology class, she is confusing does not know her stuff. She does not curve, there are no extra points and the test are very detailed! Most of the class failed her exams, she does not explain her stuff well.... Don't ruin your GPA on this class.
Dr. Cario is a great teacher. For people about to take anatomy lab. Your grade is ALL UP TO YOU!!! The point to lab is to review, you should go into lab knowing material already. Dr. Cario does a great job going over it especially if you are on her good side. So people complaining about their grade, it is their fault. If you have Cario don't stress
Here's the deal: Anatomy itself is not difficult; having to absorb the amount of information they present to you is the hard part. Cario is a decent lecturer but she skips around at times which is confusing. The key to doing well in anatomy is GO TO OPEN LAB and study bits of information each day.
Dr. Cario is a pretty fair teacher and she knows her stuff pretty well. However, she's always behind. This semester's class had been behind since the very first week. It's also very difficult to take good notes in her class because she skips around too much and her outlines are hard to follow.
Anatomy in itself is hard, there is a ton of material to learn in a short amount of time. Cario made it easier for me, really helpful and so nice. Best advice I can give is GO TO OPEN LAB!! It got me a B+ in the class and take this class with Cario!!!
Awesome prof, I found her lecture a lot easier than the other professors. Great lab prof. too. Her notes/outlines were extremely helpful. Try to take the same lab and lecture prof. if possible. GO to open lab DAILY and study every day. Tests/quizzes aren't that bad if you study often. To do well you need to dedicate a lot of time- it pays off!
I really enjoyed Dr. Cario. She is incredibly kind and extremely helpful. She'll answer any question you have for her in a very clear and helpful way. She seems to really care about her students and how they do in the class. Anatomy is a lot of information and a big time commitment but Dr. Cario makes the class enjoyable and interesting.
I loved Dr. Cario! At first you will be overwhelmed with Anatomy in general but if you just go to her for help she will help you. I started off to a rocky start and Dr. Cario encouraged me to stay with the class and gave me good study tips. I couldn't have made it through anatomy without her. Make sure to always go to lab and even attend extra labs
Welcome to Basic Human Aantomy- it is now your life. Taking this class with other hard classes is like wearing red and purple together- you just don't do it. I'm about as smart as your average pigeon and I pulled a B, so anything can happen. You are a burly caveman, and anatomy is the 50 lb fish that you must wrestle with your bare hands. Godspeed.
Very cool professor and person, the class makes you to spend a lot of time watching the online lectures and in class time is reserved for group work. The tests require you to know the material backwards and forwards.
Regardless of who you took, anatomy is tough. It is literally the hardest class I have ever taken! I studied so hard for all 4 module exams and still ended up with a C. No matter who you take, you are going to have to study every single day. Dr. Cario isn't a great lecturer, she goes off on tangents and rushes at the end. Open lab is a must!
Cario would spend too much time on one topic and then rush at the end of class to cover all material. Best advice is to print out all of the guides she makes and follow them along with her lecture. Put in the time and anything is possible.
I loved Dr. Cario. I had her for lecture and she was great. She answers questions really well. She doesn't just read quietly off of her powerpoints, she is loud and fun. She puts the powerpoint outlines online so you can print them out before class and take notes on them (I highly recommend). Read the book, take good notes, and pay attention.
she does online lectures and then you do assignment every time you come to class based on the lectures. The online lectures in total are about an hour for each class, but really hard to follow. She coughs during the lectures, gets scattered, and blanks on them which can make it difficult to follow. CLICKERS ALL THE TIME.
Lectures posted online, watch BEFORE coming to class (for activities). I took notes while watching the videos and reviewed before class and exams. Lots of groupwork and graded clickers (don't miss class). I liked the format, a lot of the class didn't, however. Thinking and memorization, but not crazy amount. Teacher really cares for subject.:)
Before taking this class I was so scared that I was going to have to drop it but I'm glad I had Dr. Cario for lecture and lab. She is always willing to help and she gives great feedback. She does go through her lectures at a fast pace do I would recommend looking at the slides and printing out the outline before class.
Anatomy, regardless of who you have, is a very difficult class. Cario is an excellent professor. I had her for both lecture and lab and really enjoyed both. She is very knowledgeable about the subject and explains stuff great. I recommend Cario to anyone taking anatomy. You will not regret it. Study hard and good luck!
This class and it's material is EXTREMELY difficult. Cario does not curve grades, and about half the class dropped. However, Cario wants people to succeed, and will personally help those who go to her. But this was the hardest class I've taken, and you will need to study about 20 hours a week, and she blasts though material. Good luck!
Four module tests and a final. Dr. Cario lectures are interesting even though the subject matter can be quite difficult. Go to open lab as if it was another class. This class is hard but its doable
not impressed by the anatomy department at VCU. This class is absolutely ridiculous in the amount of information coming at you. What's even more ridiculous is that exams don't reflect any actual lecture material. The first exam was almost entirely on muscles. Students receiving 30s - 50s on their exams and they're supposed to be "proud". A waste.
ANATOMY IS SO HARD, DO NOT TAKE THIS CLASS LIGHTLY. Taking a hard class, it sometimes helps to have a great professor, but in my opinion, Cario is not that professor. In the first half of the class she didn't really have to teach that much material, but towards the end is when she really got bad. Her time management skills really need some work.
Spent 3/4 of the lecture talking about things that didnt pertain to the class or spending time trying to fix a technical difficulty that did not even involve lecture material. Would not give makeup quizzes even when a doctors note was present saying not to attend classes. Didnt even go over half of the material on the exam bc she was distracted
You need to attend open lab to familiarize with charts and models. I suggest compiling all lecture info from outlines given in your lab book where relevant. Doing this will help you not only ID, but learn the relevant physiology. Reconciling these two is SUPER important for the test. Prep, study, and master material before lecture and lab!!!!
Dr. Cario is an amazing person, but her lectures are so hard to follow. Goes insanely fast, doesn't go back over anything, and always goes at least 5 minutes over the time class is scheduled to end. TAKE THIS CLASS ELSEWHERE!! It's terribly designed at VCU (not Dr. Cario's fault).
The first half of this semester I despised Cario's class, and you will too. BUT! Once you figure her out, it's really not that bad. Take thorough notes on her lectures AND the textbook, and then mesh them together-- neither will give you everything you need by itself. You will work hard, but you will learn a lot!
She's nice but she is a bit of a mess. She isn't always prepared for class and always lectures about a week behind the reading assignments. She assigns online weekly review assessments yet they are difficult because they are based on the reading, not the lecture material and we did not cover the topics in lecture yet while being assessed on them.
This professor was plagued by technical difficulties that took up a noticeable portion of every class. An extreme amount of homework was assigned relative to other Bio 151 classes. She is one of the only professors I know that tests with multiple answer multiple choice which makes exams and weekly assessments much more difficult than other classes.
She's very disorganized as a professor. She is a really nice person, but she just doesn't know how to teach. She goes off on tangents that are unrelated to what we're supposed to be discussing and rushes to sum everything up in the last 5 minutes of class. Her time management is awful. Also, she purposely makes her questions hard to understand.
MOST learning done at home ALL other learning done in SI sessions Will test you on things she goes over in 1 minute Will purposefully try to trick you (on attendance and test questions) - Often never goes over the correct answer Only gives partial credit for attendance if you get the questions wrong Weekly quizzes almost impossible to do well
I've always loved studying biology, but the course was a mess. Everything was made a lot harder than it should be. Topics that are otherwise easy to understand were taught in a way that made them extremely confusing. Weekly assessments have very convoluted questions. Tests are all multiple-answer-multiple-choice, which made them way too difficult.
I have always had an inner love for Biology, unfortunately, taking this class with Professor Cario made me strongly reconsider. To begin, the tests are ridiculously difficult as she makes them multiple answer multiple choice, and weekly assessments that are equally as hard. Save your GPA and mental health and do not take this class.
I did not like the fact that the tests were multiple answer multiple choice. This makes The tests harder because points could be missed if you didnt get all the right answers. She goes extremely fast, and the textbook nor her online PowerPoint notes help any. I went to one of the SI sessions and the preceptor taught way better than she did.
Please avoid her at all costs!!! She does not teach well and is often correcting herself as she speaks. She rushes through the material and expects everyone to learn ridiculously fast so you have to teach yourself the material. There is no extra credit and attendance is mandatory! All her exams are super hard! Please take another professor!
The pain I had to endure just for an A in her class. Dr. Cario is a nice person and seems like she's trying her best, however she's just a bad teacher. Her lectures are unhelpful and plagued w/technical difficulties. The textbook is as awful as Cario. Lots of boring daily HW. One good note is that she curves HW well. DONT take her for BIO 151.
Cario is decent. She goes over the broader concepts very quickly in class. textbook helps a bit, but sometimes the readings are really long and boring. Pay attention in class, take really good notes, go to preceptor sessions, and STUDY and you will get an A or B in the class. Quizzes can be tough, exams are mult. choice mult. answer, but aren't bad
The worst professor I have ever had. She does not answer questions directly. She asks students to email her with concerns and when you do she will disregard them. The lecture was always behind schedule, but the exams still covered what was missed. She knows anatomy very well, just is horrible at teaching it. AVOID HER AS A PROFESSOR AT ALL COSTS!!!
This is such a hard class at VCU, the professors are aware of it, but do nothing to alleviate the stress. If anything, it seems like they feed off of their failing students because I feel like they like the idea that they are teaching such a tough class. She knows her material, but does not do the best job of getting that information across.
Dr. Cario is a great person, but you either understand her style of teaching or you dont. I learned everything from textbook, not from her lectures. She talks very fast and doesnt go back to explain things.
Based heavily on textbook, never responds to emails, tests are massive in terms of amount of content in them. Lecture time is spent on answering top hat questions which count for participation and count for more than your homework grades. Lots of before lecture homework. Weekly reviews are HARD. Units are a month long instead of being broken up.
Dont pick her at all. Carios tests do not match up with the information youre taught. Too hard for a beginners level biology class. You have to understand the whole topic before you get to class because she doesnt really bother teaching, she just drops tophat questions in class. If it werent for the TA & tutors I wouldve failed.
Be prepared to have super hard tests. You have difficult weekly tests in addition to regular tests. You will also have two different programs for homework. A lot of work, poorly taught material which is hard to begin with, and all tests are "select all that apply" even for questions with one answer. Those who don't test well don't take her!!!
Cario is a great professor in terms of challenging you to think beyond what she teaches in lecture. You definitely have to work for an A in this class but it's totally doable if you put in the effort and work! Ignore the negative comments that say she's a horrible teacher just because she is difficult. I promise you will gain A LOT from this class.
Very textbook heavy, attendance is part of a grade. Tests questions are harder than they should, if its based on the textbook. Weekly reviews are challenging. Lots of reading and homework. BEWARE: Readings are due before each class. This class is tough. Dr. Cairo is very caring, but lectures can be hard to follow.
Dr. Cario is pretty accessible outside of class and even gives time after lectures to ask her any questions. The problem I had with this course was the nature of the questions asked, all of which are multiple answer questions and often are more complex than they need to be. Gives participation points, and weekly assessments(which were hard).
Dr. Cario encourages students to ask questions, but questions asked during lecture arent answered that well or sometimes not at all. She is a bit condescending when you email her for technical help or any concerns. The tests were always more difficult than anything we do in class or in TopHat. At times its like she doesnt know what shes doing.
Understanding with grading and tech issues (reopened all assignments at end of course + EC). Confusing at times and rushes through material but gives adequate resources to succeed in the class. Allows meeting times to go over missed questions on tests. No cumulative final, just a Unit 4 exam. Forming study groups out of class is beneficial.
Cario's the worst professor ive ever taken. Awful time mngmt. Get ready to do 4 readings a week (all with homeworks), then show up to class to answer tophat questions. Then you have to spend 1 and 1/2 hours outside of class watching the posted lectures because she never gets through the full thing in class. Then a weekly assessment on top of that.
Overall really good professor and is good at explaining the content. The lecture videos she posts on blackboard let you watch at your own pace. Zoom lectures are sorta mandatory- she posts tophat questions. The weekly quizzes and tests are pretty hard though - multiple answer, multiple choice type questions. Just pay attention and you'll be fine.
Dr. Cario is a nice person but as a professor, no. It is not her as a person but more of how she teaches. She attempts to go by the syllabus but does not meet up with it, especially with going over the material. Luckily she would post her own recorded lectures. Her grading on tests is kind of confusing. Tests are on respondus lockdown.
She doesn't respond to certain emails and when she does respond she gives different answers to different people so you don't actually know what's going on. Her tests are annoying and there was really nothing in the lectures especially since they were always a homework reading behind.
I was definitely reluctant as first but I did well by really paying attention during the recorded lectures. 95% of material on the 4 tests were covered in lecture. Two chances for the weekly reviews and the multiple-choice multiple answer questions pretty much guarantee partial credit at least. Reopened assignments & offered EC at the end too.
Professor Cario is a nice person but not a good professor at all. I basically had to teach myself the entire semester and her tests were very difficult. Getting an A is doable but you have to work very hard for it. Her lectures are all over the place and always behind. She uses multiple answer multiple choice which is very confusing.
I LOVE dr. cario. She's nice and actually wants her students to succeed. She's very good at explaining things simply. Pay attention and take GOOD notes. Textbook is a must to do homework/ lab work. Keep up with the lab notebook and study it before tests. Overall, it's a time consuming class, but if you pay attention and study you should get an A/B.
Dr. Cario is a very caring professor. She treats students with respect, and explains things thoroughly. I didnt love that lectures were just recordings we had to watch since the class is online. It takes a lot of time, but it is necessary. I took google doc notes on the recordings and ill be passing the class with a high A. important to STUDY!
She structures her class poorly. It's a three credit class. I should not have to watch recorded lectures on my own time, on to of assigned homework, in order to learn, and yet.... The 1hr15m class is spent with her rambling about due dates for thirty minutes, the rest is designated to groupwork with unenthusiastic teammates. Wish she would teach.
Not fit to teach online. Half the class is her trying to figure out powerpoint, zoom, etc. Her lack of knowledge on how to use online tools after a year and a half of covid is a hinderance. If you ever have a question, prepare for a 10 minute winding explanation without her actually answering your question. Entirely unhelpful daily group projects.
nice woman, bad prof. wants you to watch lecture videos BEFORE class. doesnt teach in class. everything is multiple answer multiple choice. exams are horrid (25 questions 125 questions bc each question is actually 5 questions w 90 min limit). WAY too in-depth for 151. five TAs/SI leaders who email relentlessly. none of us ever know our grade lol
Dr. Cario was extremely helpful as long as you go to class, everyone complaining about her that i know either doesnt do the work or doesnt go to class. If you use all the resources she gives you, the class is much smoother and there are lots of chances to improve your grade. absolutely love her.
Dr. Cario is great! She is super caring and responsive. She cares about everyone. She always makes me smile. Her tests and other assignments look a little different. The multiple choice is more of true/false; multiple answer, which I didn't find helpful for myself, more confusing to me. However, the class was still decently easy.
Her tests have a lot of detail oriented questions, but the weekly 'quizzes' and class work will prepare you well for it. She changed her teaching style to accommodate students' opinions which I really appreciated. Do your textbook readings and maybe go to SI meetings and you can get an A fairly easily. Very sweet lady, pretty good professor.
Very lenient in accepting late work and giving two chances for assessments. Only issues is that she seems to not be very tech savvy. Doing multiple attempts also mean she will average out the grade based on both attempts.
Dr. Cario is a sweet lady but all assignments are multiple-choice and true or false, not a single multiple-choice will be seen in any of her assignments. The depth in regards to this class goes further than a class listed as " Intro To Biological sciences", please choose wisely when taking any of her classes. This class is difficult.
Dr. Cario's genetics class was tough, but enjoyable. She explained concepts very clearly and was passionate about the subject. The exams were challenging because they were only about 10 questions, but if you attend lecture and review on your own, you should be fine. The homework is helpful and she has office hours and a TA to help.
She is very open to suggestions from students which made the class a lot better! She explains topics clearly and will explain further if you still do not understand. There are a good amount of small assignments so do not get behind. Overall definitely would recommend!
Professor Cario is very passionate and provides a great workload. She gives opportunities to boost your grade with multiple assignments while also helping you learn. For online, she had a T/F format with advanced/analytical thinking. You really need to be on top of notes and assignments. Make sure you take advantage of her help. Knowing peers helps
This class is the hardest class I've ever taken. Professor Cario is a nice person, but the way anatomy is structured at VCU is awful, there's so much unnecessary work given in and after class. The class only got harder too, she gives way too much work- and I know that its a work intensive class, I spent 15 hours/week on it when I shouldn't have to
She doesn't ever seem like she knows what she's doing in class, she doesn't show up to lecture ready and always has technical issues. Her slides don't give much information, also makes you watch lecture videos for class then proceeds to give the exact same lecture in class not giving us time to do the graded in class activities.
I like Dr. Cario, but despise anatomy. This is a hard and awful class to teach and to have to learn, but I like Dr. Cario and she did try to alleviate stress. I was giving this class 10 hrs/wk when I feel like it did not have to be that way and the lectures definitely could have been structured better
Dr. Cario is an amazing professor and no one can convince me otherwise. She is kind and genuinely cares about her students. She uses her knowledge to help alleviate stress. Even though I did not do well in the class this semester she definitely gives all of her students the materials and opportunities to get a good grades in her class.
Dr. Cario is such a caring professor. Sometimes the lecture content can be confusing, so be sure to ask questions if you have them. Doing the lectures ahead of time, taking notes on the lecture material, and labeling your lab manual is important to doing well in the class. I recommend attending Open Lab & SI sessions to help you apply the content.
Dr.Cario is a amazing professor. She cares for each one of her students and helps them in any way. The TA's also do a great job helping you. One tip for this class is you have to go to open labs to prepare otherwise you will fail. She is a great teacher, Just the course is really hard. So be prepared to study ALOT.
Her tests set you up for failure. Her tests are so hard, the questions are so weirdly worded and second if you get one question wrong it takes off double instead of the same. Like suppose you had a 4 question test and you got three right and one wrong, instead of getting a 75%, you would get a 50% and all the tests are multiple answer
She speaks to her students in a degrading way. >5 assignments a week. She makes her questions very hard to understand, like trick questions. They're all multiple answer so if there are 4 answers and 2 are correct... if you pick one right one and one wrong one then you will get a 0% for that question. The class is way harder then it needs to be
Spends most of her time reading off a powerpoint and does explain how everything got to that point. Explantions are weird. She assigns a lot of weighted work and her grading system for multiple choice is weird. If you choose 2 correct answers but choose 1 wrong answer, you get no credit. Taking her course is easy if you understand biology already
Her lectures are very bad. Group assignments are annoying and usually have errors in them. She assigns 5+ homework assignments every week. The textbook is free but it is horrendous. That being said, this class is very easy if you just do all of the assignments. The material itself is not challenging.
She was overall not a good professor and everything completely went over my head. She never put in any effort to get to know her students and talked to students in an extremely awful manner. I definitely think the class could've been simpler if she actually tried to teach.
Honestly was confused majority of the time I was in class. Dr Cario is a sweet lady, but struggles to relay information. Lectures are grazed over, but you are doing group work most of the time. The worst part is that EVERY question has "choose all that apply" or matching and she deducts points for incorrect. Avoid her if you can.
This class is pretty easy as long as you do the pre-lecture readings and keep up with the content. This course isn't test heavy; there's only 4 unit tests, and in-class assignments as well as post-activity assignments' help tremendously to get a good grade. Her weekly reviews have questions that are identical to her tests.
The lectures she posted online were the only way I learned from her. She would always skip or not explain material in in-person lectures. Her tests were only "choose-all-that-apply" questions and incorrect answers counted against you. If you don't have to take Cario do not. Textbook not helpful, lots of mistakes on her part in homework assignments.
Dr. Cario requires you to learn more than any other BIOL151 section. Hard tests and overwhelming content, but as long as you don't fall behind you'll be fine. Cheat sheet allowed on tests. MUST study a lot to do well.
Dr. Cario is a pretty good professor for both lecture and lab. Lecture wise be prepared for a lot of in class activities and group work (same group all year) on canvas but they can be helpful. You also get a cheat sheet on lecture exams so you don't have to spend a ton of time studying for them. Its a heavy class but she's a good choice.
Cario is nice and a good teacher. The material is heavy so regardless it will be a lot of work outside of class but Cario breaks it down in a way that is easy to follow and also plans a lot of lab time for overviewing the material to practice for the exams. Go to open lab, do the labelings, and practice and you can pass with an A/B.
I only have 350 characters so I gotta make this concise. Cons: cares way too much about attendance and due dates, tests are multiple answer, not multiple choice, and insane amounts of homework.Pros: lectures are also posted on canvas and she lets you bring one piece of paper with ANY notes to the test.If you play you're cards right, you'll be fine.
Dr. Cario is a very caring/knowledgeable professor but the course itself is hard because it's structured poorly. Make sure to watch the pre-recorded lecture videos and take notes before coming to class to work on class activities with your assigned group. Going to open lab was super helpful. Dedicate A LOT of time to the class and you'll do well!!
anatomy is hard no matter what, but dr.cario was nice & easily accessible outside of class for extra help. this is a flip class, be ready to watch lectures BEFORE class. reference the textbook while watching the videos. in class we worked with groups (based on lab sec.) the exams are similar to the weekly review assignments, so study them well
She's nice, however it is a flipped style class, so the majority of learning is done outside of class. It is possible to do well in the class, but be prepared to set time aside just for anatomy because practice will be a great help as well as going to open lab to get familiar with the models and diagrams.
This course is super well-organized. I think a lot of the negative reviews come from this being a generally intensive course, which it is, but Dr. Cario does a good job of breaking it up into manageable chunks, and all the stuff she assigns is helpful review. She's a very knowledgeable, kind, and accessible professor. Highly recommend!
Despite all the negative reviews, Cario is a good professor. But I will say, this course is extremely time consuming, like many anatomy courses, at VCU the lab and lecture is infused within one course so it's all one grade. Exams are worth 75% of your grade. Start off strong, know the material, memorization isn't gonna save you in this course.
Dr. Cairo was an amazing professor. I loved how she gives you multiple attempt quizzes and "exams." (weekly practice that is 40% of your grade). She cares about her students a lot and responds super fast to emails. She provides lots of grace periods on all assignments. only downfall is that all her assignments are multiple answer not choice.
She doesn't teach, it is a flipped classroom. She lets the students teach themselves and even the LA's don't understand how she wants answers. Just make sure to sign up for a different teacher because she doesn't help too. Her lecture videos range from 1-3 hours and notes take 1.5 times the amount. Take her if you want to suffer.
she is so bad at teaching. never take her 50 minute lectures because she will just talk about 1 question that no one asked about for 40 minutes and then give you 3 assignments to finish. It's unnecessarily hard for an intro class and i want to cry every day. save your soul and take another professor.
The reviews are quite dramatic. Biol 151 is a tough course, and all the professors that teach it do a flipped classroom. She's the only prof that actually gives you lecture videos to watch instead of telling you to read the textbook. Stay on top of the videos and read the textbook. Memorization won't help you- you need to know the material.
The 50 minute class that I had with her did not really work. She always seems to be rushing through material in class and we get 10 out of the 50 minutes to do massive groups of assignments. I really liked the group based structures of the class and she is very kind. Her grading gets really confusing with due dates.
She doesn't explain enough in the lecture videos and gives a lot of assignments that can have confusing due dates. It's already a hard enough class, and her way of teaching just made it worse. Her tests are also a mess, the team aspect of the class is the only thing I enjoyed about it. She's nice, but just not a good teacher, take anyone else.
She drops so many gradesto help boost grades. Shes super nice theres just a lot of work, most of which being group.
This is a flipped style class. You will have to watch lectures and take notes before coming in class because you will be doing group assignments about what you have learn in the lecture videos. It is a lot of information but if you attend open lab for labs exams, you will be just fine
Guys the ratemyprofessor reviews scared me so much, but I had a blast in this class. They give you so many tools (open lab, cadavers, videos, photos, textbook, lab manual) to pass the class, so it truly is up to you if you will pass. Cario is very caring and nice and explains the material well. The material also builds off of itself.
I love Dr. Cario pls do not listen to negative reviews. She gives you so many resources and makes a very difficult class much easier. Your grade fully depends on how much effort you put into the class. Watch the lecture videos, take notes, and just stay on top of work if you want to pass.
Dr. Cairo genuinely cares about all her students and provides incredible resources like open lab, LAs, and group work. This class is tough & requires serious independent studying, attending open lab is essential to passing! Some blame her for their struggles, but success is on the individual students. YOU MUST PUT IN THE EFFORT OR YOU WILL FAIL!!!
save yourself and your gpa, dont do it.... take it online if u can!!!!
Great professor for 152! Loved the lecture videos—the key is to annotate them before class, so come ready to practice actual exam-style questions with your table. Focus on understanding the concepts, not memorizing answers. You can bring a cheat sheet for exams, and she provides any needed graphs. She really helped me understand, not just memorize.
Many of these reviews are dramatic. Anatomy is a difficult course and you cannot expect to earn a high grade without studying. The professors all work very closely to ensure cohesion between the courses. There are numerous support systems in place (open lab, learning assistant sessions, lab preceptors, and Dr. Cario's office hours). Use resources!
Just don't take unless you want to spend 5 hours outside of the classroom tutoring.
Don't take if you like lecture heavy classes. She provides a lecture video before each class along with a quiz that's due before class. In the actual class, we only do group work.
Turn in pre and post lecture quizzes on time
The class structure was basically to listen to the lecture and take notes BEFORE class, and to be ready to do group activities on the content. As long as you do that, you're set. Dr. Cario was accessible outside of class and very understanding.
Great professor, HATED flipped classroom. Lectures were online which is annoying for me bc a 30 minute video would take me an hour to take notes on. Tests were annoying, not multiple choice but select all that apply. She does give ec opportunities and wants u to succeed. Be prepared to work hard if u really want it.
Dr. Cario might actually be one of the best professors. Her flipped classroom method can be difficult to grasp but she really makes you understand biology. She gives so much extra credit it is basically impossible to fail the class. I literally got 60's on almost all my exams and still passed the class with an A.
