The class is a lot of work but the professor is helpful. Even though it's online I went to her office hours and she was great!
She's really good at lecture and explaining things, good at making points. Very assertive, almost intimidating. She's helped me every time I've gone to her office, although every time I've gone I've felt like an annoyance. If she teaches any other classes I need, I'd take her again. Just read the book and don't miss lecture and you'll do fine.
She is an amazing Professor. This is class is not easy but she is really helpful. She will go over anything with you until you understand it. I recommended her class for anyone needing to take Phil class but the in-person not online class
Completely excellent teacher, very easy to understand, is great at testing your instinct.
Not helpful at all, she just tells you to read your book and tests you on it. I never understood anything. Very boring, at end i drop it.
Superb, fair, and forgiving teacher. She actually cares whether or not you do well in her class. One tip: she doesn't like lazy people. do your best and you'll get the grade you deserve. Tests are easy just as long as you show up to class and understand her lecture notes. reading the book helps. if you're the lazy type, don't bother with her class.
Amazing teacher and Highly Recommended. High use of analogous materials which advances your overall understanding. TAKE HER CLASS! As long as you read the materials prior to class you will do well. Enjoy, i wish she taught philosphy 5!
Such a great professor!! Her class is super interesting and she makes the lectures really understandable. She also is really helpful: we had a term paper and I went to ask her some questions and she actually went through my whole paper with me and gave me suggestions. really nice and funny.
Definitely knew how to teach the subject. If Philosophy has anything to do with your major, I would recommend her, but otherwise, it's just whatever. Her final is take home and there really isn't any hw. Only had 3 assignements, but they weren't easy.
Hands down, best Professor in the philosophy department at Pierce College. A must take!!!
No book needed. Just read all of the readings and notes online and turn in all of the assignments and you should get an A. The only thing I didn't like about the class is that she takes a LONG time to grade anything.
SHE'S ONE OF THE BEST! DO YOUR WORK, STUDY, AND YOU WILL BE OKAY. PROMISE :)
This was my favorite class of the semester. Now this class isn't easy for everyone though, the coursework is hard. I would say that in this class, you either are great or not that great. Keep in mind that Prof. Gillis will help you in her office hours, and will make it easy for everyone. The class is hard, but Prof. G makes it as easy as she can.
very very clear. listen to everything she says and youll do fine. course work can be difficult but offers a modest amount of extra credit.
Honestly one of my favorite classes so far. Had to write a summary of the readings each week but its super easy and never got lower than a 4/4. Readings are all in the book so you need it. Attendance wasn't mandatory. One major paper, 5% extra credit(on your whole grade) for showing it to her early. Would recommend and definitely take again.
Amazing teacher. I only took philosophy to knock out some general ed, and I ended up loving it.
Weekly readings which take approximately an hour to get done, but it's easy to get full credit. The only test given was the final exam. I got an A but did all the assigned work and put effort to understand the material. Basically, if you're willing to try you will get an A. She's clear and responds to emails within one day.
Easy A, if you put work into her class! Gives Extra Credit, NO EXCUSES! Helpful teacher! Great Experience
Great teacher, If you do the assigned work and reading there is no reason why you should not get an A. She is a very helpful teacher who knows the material she teaches inside and out.
ONLINE COURSE. Very easy to get a passing grade or A in this course! On some chapters professor would post videos online to help us solve some problems. There were only weekly assignments and a final, which was easy! She gives a lot of extra credit too! Great, easy professor for a hard course!
She might be the best instructor I have ever had. She makes sure to fully answer every question no matter how stupid it may be. She certainly has her beliefs but does not let them affect her teaching. My class had a myriad of different view points and all were allowed to speak. Even better, all were challenged equally.
This was a very fun and interesting class. You need critical thinking but it's rather fun to think about the subjects you are discussing. She's funny and very helpful if you simply just ask. and she's hot.
Buy the textbook. You really need it! This class is not that bad, just make sure not to slack off. I thought it was impossible to get an A, but there is a light at the end of the tunnel as she grades fairly and the final can be aced as long as you study. Make sure to cite properly, it's one of her pet peeves.
Great Philosophy Professor! Took her online critical thinking class. I was dreading it at first, but her organization, clarity, and great communication was very helpful. Follow instructions and stay on top of the assignments. Read material, analyze, and ask Q's when stumped -she definitely helps. Got an A and learned a lot, I highly recommend her.
She's amazing. Extremely funny and interesting. Definitely one of the best professors I've ever had. As long as you do the weekly homework and study you'll be fine!
One of my favorite professors on this campus. She's smart, funny, and totally relatable. She always has an answer to your questions. Her class did consist of a lot of reading and writing every week but the topics were always interesting. Just do your work, and study for the final and you can get an A like I did. I highly recommend her.
I loved the class,I loved philosophy 20 (Ethics) Teacher was so helpful, always there available to help her students. I recommend this professor, it was a great class.
Out of all Gillis' classes -- this is probably the easiest. If you understand the concepts, you should get at least a B. No homework, attendance is optional, and lectures are crystal clear. And if you're having a hard time with the materiel, Gillis is always willing to help in her office hours. There is a lot of extra credit, so take advantage.
Gillis became one of my favorite professors during my time in the LACCD. And as a philosophy major she strengthen my passion for philosophy. For ethics Gillis won't spoon-feed you the material; she expects you to think about it and know how to apply it in cases. The class does require a lot of reading and writing. It was a great class -- take her!
Gillis is amazing. She's very open and it is a very mind-opening, challenging class. She illustrates a lot of the reading material on the dry-erase board, so the lecture is very clear. She sometimes teaches class barefooted haha. Basically it's a lot of reading and writing and thinking, which I enjoyed. I would take Gillis again. She's hot.
Cara Gillis is the nicest teacher ever. her class is hard but she gives you second chace to improve. she goes over the material until you understand. Loves to answer questions. She Lets you use a cheat sheet for the test the final is a take home.
Professor Gillis is very nice and helpful. Her lectures are clear but the subject can be confusing at times and can lose some people. Read the material she covers in class and the class will be easy.
As long as you do the readings, you'll pass. She's helpful and will answer any questions you have.
Professor Gillis knows what she's talking about. Explains the material as thorough as possible. Don't be discouraged when receiving a low test score because somehow at the end of the semester, the gods will rise and help you raise your grade. Tons of extra credit available, just do the weekly readings! Prof. Gillis is truly a great teacher!
Super helpful!I did not do the readings whatsoever and passed with an A.ATTEND class and take notes of her lecture and discussions in class and you will be fine. She also provides her lectures online but not everything she discusses in class will be there.Tons of extra credit! And cheat sheets are allowed for tests.
Awesome
She was one of the most interesting professors I've had. She was really fun and made the subject interesting. For her Bioethics class she will make you write a research paper, but if you go to her office hours and ask her to read it she will help you improve it, so don't sweat. It's a pretty easy A if you just do the readings and summaries.
Didn't really understand philosophy before now I have a grip on it. Dr. Gillis is laud back pretty cool and very hott
In awe I am, just by engaging myself in a review for this woman. Dr. Gillis has taught, from reviews, exceptional philosophy all over Cali. Inspiring mentor. You will learn and come out of her class as a better person. Her instruction can be heavy on the heart, but the information will rattle you. Intelligent and easy on the eyes. Her blue eyes!
She is the best professor ever!
Prof Gillis is an amazing teacher. She makes you question and think and is genuinely interested in what you have to say. Her class was fun and the discussion thought provoking. Major extra credit and doing the readings beforehand really helps you understand what's going on (no book, all readings are online), plus has a review class before exams.
Truly one of my favorite professors this semester. She's really passionate about Philosophy, so much that it makes you more inclined to learn about it. Very organized in an online class and the questions on testsquizzes are exactly from the readings she provides nothing outta left field. Overall, I would recommend this class!
She is great. After taking this class I have completely fallen in love with Philosophy. She is SO helpful. No physical text for this online class.
I took this as an online class. There was some reading but not all of it is really necessary. She is not a hard grader at all, and there was maybe an hour or two hours of work per week. Overall I had a good experience, and it was relatively an easy A
Great teacher. Very nice. No reason not to get an A. She gives plenty of extra credit. i earned more than 100% and can't say i was a genius on the topic. Gives study guides for exams. Attendance not mandatory. Makes classes interesting. Attendance will help. no textbook. She gives you everything you need online.
Heavy reading and writing, but she is pretty lenient with her grading. Her feedback can be vague on drafts. Extra credit up to 10% of your grade. Many students didnt fully grasp the content discussed based on what I saw in the forums. Philosophy should really be taken in a classroom setting. But if time is a factor, online is fine to get it done.
She gives great lectures. Very clear on the message she's trying to get across. She often repeats things so they get stuck in your head. Tests are easy if you were paying any attention in class and read the passages she gives you. Highly recommend her, best philosophy professor I have ever had.
Great teacher, very clear, very funny and gives a lot of extra credit. Also very helpful if you have any questions or misunderstood anything.
She's a very nice professor. The lectures can be a bit of a drag sometimes but she makes it very interesting. She gives plenty of extra credit so there is no reason for you to fail the class. Attendance isn't exactly mandatory. Just make sure you do tons of reading. There's only 3 or 4 tests. Class debates are fun as well! I recommend taking her!!
The hardest 'A' I worked for. She was confusing in what she wanted from you, denied me when I asked her for specific help, she gave me great grades on my outline but when I did the essay which was EXACTLY from it she said it was not good enough? She does write you back as fast as she could, but evn so I wouldn't recmnd, I'd look for something else
I took her honors philosophy class online. You must read the book every week because there is a quiz on the chapter. The quizzes are open question but you can find the answers on the notes she leaves. Discussion board is not mandatory and because it was an honors class there was an 8 pg. honors paper. She gives midterm questions out a week before.
I took an online honors with Professor Gillis. She was very nice on grading, which is the way it should be. You read the book, there is a tiny quiz each week. She posts very clear and good notes that have all the answers. 5% EC for discussion posts! The only challenging thing is the 8 page final paper. Just show you are trying and u'll be fine!
She's an okay professor
her online philosophy 1 class was overall easy just required work. every week we had forums and reading assignments, but lots of extra credit was offered. would def take again
I've taken two of her classes and they both were online. Her set up is organized and the class is comprised of discussion forums, reading assignments, and 3 exams. She offers a lot of extra credit based of the reading too. Don't bother buying the book, she provides the reading material on Moodle. I'm really glad I took her for my last semester.
I really enjoyed her class. This class is easy , your grade is based on 6 readings, a paper and a final. She has an extra credit opportunity. You don't have to show up to class tbh. Shes funny and actually interesting.
Dr. Cara Gillis's Philosophy in Ethics class is very rewarding and enriched my life tremendously! The time and care she puts into teaching Philosophy in Ethics is amazing. She is truly a great instructor who is willing to share a great amount of knowledge about life. She is a great leader!
Her Philosophy in Ethics class is very rewarding and enriched my life tremendously! The time and care she puts into teaching Philosophy in Ethics is amazing. She is truly a great instructor who is willing to share a great amount of knowledge about life. She is a great leader!
This was hardest class I've ever taken but I learned the most. It was totally worth it and professor Gillis is an amazing teacher. She uses words Ive never heard of before but just look them up or ask her after class. She will sit with you in office hours and answer all of your questions. The class was 3 exams and a bunch of quizzes.
I took Dr. Gillis' online ethics class. Of all my online philosophy classes, hers has was by far, the most engaging and my favorite. She provides helpful written lecture notes and well produced video tutorials . She is organized, clear, and fair and has accessible office hours. Dr. Gillis is a phenomenal professor. I highly recommend her!
Take Professor Gillis. She is an amazing professor. She offers extra credit and her syllabus states exactly what she expects. As long as you follow her guidelines, you will do well. She gives invaluable feedback and genuinely cares about her students. No textbook was required for her class which is a big plus!
just take her class!
Logic is hard but professor Gillis somehow makes it okay. I tried taking this class with 2 other profs since I need it for my major. It was horrible both times. Even though her class was in the eveing it was so much better. She wants you to come see her if your stuck. She even Skyped with me on a Friday night!
Easy class so long as you do the work, but there is quite a lot of work: minimum of 6 essays with 5 page average and minimum of 6 forums with an article relating to that week's material. Difficult to for sure know how you're writing until she gives feedback, which for my class was not until four essays later... however, lots of room for an A and EC
This class was a lot of work, but it really made me think. She's slow grading papers so I just went to her office and she would go over every essay with me. She's really approachable but be prepared for lots of feedback.
Cara Gillis is extremely passionate about the field of Philosophy. She desires for a student to be able to learn and think using the subject at hand and not just rattle off some useless facts that you read about each week. Your level of engagement makes a big difference, interaction with the subject is a key component in the learning process.
She was a fair grader and I felt that I could talk to her if I needed help just read the book she assigns and do your research on it if you don't understand it
The teacher was good overall and gave a lot of extra credit but only takes this class if it is a major requirement because logic is just plain hard and this is coming from an engineering major.
Symbolic Logic, itself, is generally difficult for many people. However, Gillis makes it a breeze. The class will get progressively harder, so make sure you do all the homework. This is a class that requires quite a bit of commitment for an A. But, don't fret because Gillis is always there to help.
Online class is tough because Symbolic Logic is not an easy class but the tutoring center is really helpful and visit Dr. Gillis during her office hours - she's great!
Gillis makes you think. She picks readings about whats actually happening and tries to show different ways of looking at the issues but shes always yelling about thinking about how the arguments work and not just whether you agree with them. She's also way funny. You have to meet with her once but its easy.
Prof Gillis is great, I have taken her for Phil20 and Phil9. She has video lectures which are very helpful. Shes clear with her grading, and you can find her easily during her office hours. Phil9 may seem challenging at first but as long as you do the assigned work youll get it. Make sure to read the rules and examples in the textbook, it helps.
This class changed my life. You have to actually think about things that are happening in the world. You have to write a lot but its actually fun. Go to her office hours and you'll get lots of feedback.
Dr. Gillis is amazing! Logic is challenging but with all charm she makes you want to understand it. She's a real cutie pie and I totally dig her. She will do pop quizzes BUT don't panic, it's really just for her to figure out whether or not the class is picking up what she's putting down. She's also pretty easy on the eyes so that's a plus. (:
Dr. Gillis is a perfect example of a college professor. Her assignments, requirements and attitude reflects perfect examples of how college courses should be. Not much is required and not much is demanded from her. Recently took her online ethics class (Philos 20) and learned much from her studies. She helps and discusses 1 on 1 over Skype!
To be fair, I took her online course which was tightly packed with these 2 page papers every week. It is a lot of work but she is always accessible to email for help and feedback. If you want to learn something in PHILOS 020, she is the way to go. I don't remember her tests being anything near difficult and for once, I agree with the others here.
There's not enough good things to say about Cara Gillis! She is the best professor I have ever had. She is fun to engage with and knows a lot about applied Ethics and Philos, in general. I've taken Phil 20, 28 with her and the readings are all interesting and her lectures are thorough and your guide to the tests. Overall, I highly recommend her.
I've taken Gillis for Phil 20 and Phil 9. These classes are so much work! You can't coast and she's always telling you to work more. I learned so much. I couldn't stop thinking about the weird examples she would use in ethics. I even talked to my friends about it. Go to her office hours because talking to her is amazing.
Dr. Gillis is the best professor at Pierce College. Take any classs she teaches. Go to office hours whenever you can. Don't be scared she's super cool.
I took Prof. Gillis this passed winter and of course the was relatively difficult in that a whole semesters worth of work was crammed into a month, but it was honestly one of the best classes I've ever taken! She's really good on explaining all of the topics and if you keep up and stay on track, you'll get an A. Loved her!!!
I had Gillis over a winter class. Ethics. We got to pick the topics. We had to write a lot of essays but she would go over drafts with you. She also always answers emails and is super available and chill. I still think about the stuff I learned she gets stuck in your head. It's cool.
I just took phil 1 with Cara and it was the best class I've ever taken. She was willing to talk about a bunch of different things and I would leave class with so many ideas in my head. You do have to go see her twice but it was honestly the chillest conversation I've ever had with a prof. The rest of the work, which was a lot, was pretty easy.
If you've got to take philosophy 9 take it with her and only her. I tried it with 2 other profs and had no idea what was happening until I took it with her.
Dr. Gillis is the best. She makes you write A LOT but is totally chill with how she grades and gives lots of amazing feedback. She finds a way to take the most boring reading and turn it into something you keep thinking about. I had to write 15 super short papers (you get points for turning them in) and a final exam. Go see her in office hours.
She's the best professor. Take her class, you won't regret. By the way, if English is your second language, you are still fine.
There's not enough good things to say about Gillis. I've taken four classes with her (9, 6, 1, 20) She's always available and makes the readings and the assignments interesting. Take her in person if you can because her lectures are the best and she'll slow the class down to answer everyones questions.
Professor Gillis was a great professor. Coming from someone who thought philosophy was a ridiculous class let alone major, the readings and class discussions were enlightening and thought-provoking. Weekly readings and short writes on the reading. Have to meet with her in office hours twice for discussions on readings, but overall a fun, easy class
Do the weekly reading papers and you'll get an A in the class. Doesn't care about attendance, only like 10 people would show up. She gave us a study guide for the final based on the readings/papers we had done and reviewed the answers with us so it was very easy to prepare for. You don't need to buy the textbook she posts the readings online.
This class is hard, esp over summer. Dr. Gillis is great and makes it tolerable. You have to submit homework and do exams but she posts a ton of videos and is always available. Always. She helps you out when you get stuck and doesn't make you feel bad about it. Like I said, the class is really hard but she helps you out a lot.
The class seemed impossible at first but Gillis shows you the way. She will slow things down when people are confused and work with you in her office hours until you get it. You have to do the work, weekly homework and some tests, but she helps you out a lot. She always answered my emails and met with me when I coudln't make her office hours.
There's weekly homework and tests. She will slow things down when people are confused and work with you in her office hours until you get it. She helps you out a lot. She always answered my emails and met with me when I coudln't make her office hours. The class seemed impossible at first but Gillis shows you the way.
Cara is a very accessible teacher. The class is hard but if you reach out when you are stuck you can get help. I think I went to her office hours every week and she always had time for me. There is homework, exams, and weekly quizzes that she grades easily. Go see her when you're stuck because she's really nice.
Read a chapter per week and then do 1 or 2 exercises. Can use program to grade hw before officially submitting. Professor made herself available and would remind us about tutoring sessions. Always left feedback or tips if you asked. Slow grader by her own admission. Group discussions 10% of grade but peers don't really participate.
AMAZING AMAZING AMAZING. super chill. no pressure at all. easy A. two essays on topics of your choice. weekly 300 word summaries of the readings which are graded quantitatively so you literally dont have to put any effort in them. In class discussions on the readings are absolutely amazing. will make you think. you will leave class mind blown.
I'm writing about Dr. Cara because she is working really hard to make the class work online for us. Moving to online half-way through was though but she's making it work. Great lectures, she gives you all the material, and she'll meet with you online whenever you can make it. She really cares. Get her help with your papers -- it's worth it.
Cara Gillis is AMAZING! She provides great feedback on your work! She breaks down the readings in note format and has videos of her going over the material. It's very helpful. You will do discussions, quizzes, and a final. Some of the readings are challenging but with the additional explanations and group posts, it should make sense at the end.
Dr. Gillis is an amazing professor. This was my first philosophy course, and I am very appreciative that Dr. Gillis was my professor. Not only is she caring and an outstanding lecturer, she persuaded me to love philosophy. She helped us think logically, objectively, and critically about very important current issues. Thank you for inspiring me
I loathe philosophy. I hope I never take another philosophy class in my life. However, I am so happy I got to take it with Prof Gillis. Her lectures are interesting, her grading rubric is clear, and she is fair in her analysis. Her homework is not difficult, and she allows you to retake tests for up to 70% credit, so you have no excuse to fail
there is a loooot of reading but her class is easy. weekly short assignments on the assigned text and two papers. She makes the class interesting with her lectures and is very inviting for students to share their input
Took Professor Cara Gillis for Philosophy Ethics. Was a great experience. She is responsive and gives great feedback. Classes are interesting and open discussion is great. Learned a lot in subjects and counter views to my own. Class does require a fair amount of reading, homework is based on those. Tests are open notes. Highly recommend her.
The content of this class itself was not easy, but Professor Gillis is truly an amazing instructor. Her lectures are not boring at all and they are really engaging. She is a wonderful human being who cares about what she is teaching and cares about her students. She is accessible outside of class and I recommend her for Ethics and for other classes
I really like Professor Gillis. Offers lots of extra credit opportunities, and has good lectures that make the material manageable. Gives good feedback for the assignments and is there to help during office hours. Friendly, cares about her students, and is interested in the material she teaches. Just an all-round cool person.
Ive never had a teacher say they wanted to hear what I thought about what we learn but Doctor Gillis somehow makes you really care about what youre reading. I was actually excited to write weekly response papers. You do have to write and read a lot but she somehow makes it so easy. Go see her in office hours its good.
Cara is an amazing teacher who gets it. Her lectures mind-blowing and she givens everyone space to talk or not. Her assignments arent hard but they make you think in ways you never did. She gives video feedback too. She doesnt put her opinions on anyone and really made me learn a lot about myself. I just signed up for another class with her.
She's great! Easy coursework and she isn't a harsh grader. Would definitely recommend and I even hope to take another course with her in the future.
She is a really kind professor that truly cares about her students. She provides the materials to read and there are weakly discussion posts. There are three essay's but she discusses it with the class and goes over what she expects. There are always office hours and she is very helpful if you don't understand a topic. I truly recommend her.
Professor Gillis' class is amazing. I took her for Philosophy 20, and I learned so much. She is super understanding and caring. She wants everyone in her class to understand what they're reading and just make the material make sense. Overall one of the best professors I have had at Pierce!
Professor Gillis is terrific; she takes the time and effort to make sure her students understand the concepts. That being said, do not take symbolic logic if you aren't a fan of math and riddles. This is not your typical philosophy class; you must understand the concepts and apply them properly. This class was very challenging, in my opinion.
I've already had Professor Gillis for Philos 1 and loved her both in that course and this one. She is so caring and really just wants her students to succeed. Fair warning though - the content in Philos 9 is a bit tricky, but Professor Gillis has been so fair with grading!
Great instructor. Genuinely learned a lot more than expected from an elective class. She is very helpful and enthusiastic. Make sure you do your readings and submit your writings on time. You can use them on the final for help.
Professor Gillis was great. The only advice I can give you for this course and prof. is stay on top of the work, understand it as best as possible, and remember it. Everything builds on everything. If you do not understand something, she has a lot of office hours, so TAKE ADVANTAGE OF THAT. She is really helpful.
ive taken two classes with cara and im taking another next semester! theyre so sweet and helpful and she genuinely care about her student and wants us all to succeed. 10/10 recommend her classes
This was required for my major or I would have avoided it. Students are inculcated in Critical Theory and Postmodern scholarship and ideologies and provoked to participate in doctrinaire woke activism without any acknowledgement and at times denial that this is in fact what is occurring.
Keywords: OER/Low-Cost textbook, Very Organized, Great Listener, Easy to contact Cara's Formal Logic class was truly great. A very attentive and organized instructor. She really wants folks to succeed. Stick with the work, even if it seems confusing. Just plough through and go to her office hours and let her help you see where you keep effing up.
Professor Gillis is amazing. This class was really tough but she somehow made it tolerable. If anything is confusing go to her office hours and do LOTS of practice! The online textbook is also really cheap and easy to use, and very helpful.
I signed up for this class because it fit in to my schedule but I ended up loving it so much I switched my major. Cara let us pick some of what we wanted to learn about and then listened when we asked questions about it. Things are learned are so useful to me when I look at what's happening right now. 2 papers, with lots of help and feedback.
I switched majors because of this class...into philosophy not away from it. She provides a very relaxed and nuanced class focused on understanding the perspectives of the philosophers we'll read about rather than just learning ideas. There's one weekly assignment/reading and 2 papers at the end of the semester. Very fun, relaxing, and informative.
TAKE HER! She is the sweetest human being and has always provided snacks and tea for our class. Her lectures are so amazing, and she never pressures anyone into participating (and is super understanding to introverts like me). She gives a final paper and 2 in-person written exams. At the end of the semester, she also brings donuts for everyone!
Literally the best professor I've ever had. She managed to make a 3-hour class somehow not miserable. The class was more a discussion than a lecture and she was so chill. She also really cares about her students and did everything she could to make writing assignments less stressful. A super forgiving grader and overall a really great person.
I'm a STEM major but I really enjoyed the readings that we had to do. Dr. Gillis was very lenient in terms of grading papers
Dr. Gillis is amazing! Very chill and constantly encourages you to reach out to her if you're lost. Easily accesible outside of class by email. Course structure is very clear and fair: lots of EC opportunities; drops 3 of 13 ch assignments, roughly 3-4 assignments per week. Fees for course material is literally less than $10. Would take again!
Professor Gillis made the class surprisingly engaging. The discussions were insightful, and she was a lenient grader. For study prep, I found unstuck study and the free textbook really helpful.
Dr. Gillis is an amazing professor. The class material itself was challenging for me, but she made it tolerable. She is extremely open to answering questions/clearing any confusion and encourages reaching out to her for help. Her class is very engaging and the content was pretty interesting. She shows a lot of care for her students.
I've taken Professor Gillis for both 020: Ethics and 009: Symbolic Logic. She genuinely makes a 3 hour class fly by, I've never once wanted to skip her class. Her lectures are super engaging and never boring. She's very generous with her grading, and if you ever need help she is super quick to answer emails. 1000% take her classes!!
Symbolic logic is hard but Cara makes it fun and doable. I had to take this class but I actually ended up enjoying it mostly because Cara makes the class really interesting and is always willing to help you succeed. If you get stuck make sure you talk to her. She's super approachable and never makes you feel bad for asking questions.
While attendance is not mandatory, it is highly encouraged. The subject matter itself can be difficult, but the way she teaches makes it approachable. Logic requires constant effort, so keep trying. She provides multiple extra credit opportunities and is very supportive. Her lectures are very in depth. Also her canvas is so organized its amazing
