Just sit there. Take notes. Think about the upcoming weekend. pretty easy class.

This is a tough but reasonable professor. She assigns a lot of reading, and you must take a lot of notes. She is a very helpful professor, though. If you have a tough time in the class she is willing to work with you. She wants to see people succeed.

Horribly boring, i read the book constantly and went to every class, even took AP History classes in highschool and got A's, ended up only getting a 2.5 in the class. Wanted to leave couldn't sit thier every day. She talks too monotone!
This is all lecture, and she has a soft voice. I did very well in her class, but expect to put the work in, or better yet read the book. Her test questions come off the review sheets. Easy to talk to after class.
Not a good teacher, monotone voice and BORING as heck. It was a struggle for me to actually sit there the entire time. On a side note, will someone please tell her that pleated navy blue pants, a black belt, and stringy hair and no makeup is NOT cute!
Professor Shelly is extremely talented and knows too much to teach only introductory courses. Students taking her to fulfill the Western Civ requirement may resent her, but history buffs will enjoy the class.
Well...what can I say...just because you know a lot about History does NOT mean you should teach it, especially when you are apparently afraid of humans, and unable to communicate verbally.
2 words: SAVE YOURSELF..... she just wasn't meant to be a teacher, no enthusiasm,
she talks monotone the whole time and is so uninteresting. She grades the class like it is a five hundred level class and it was only a one hundred level class.
I took the class for a gen ed requirement. If you want a good grade, you will have to spend the time to read everything. The class isn't all that exciting but I wouldn't call it boring either!
Took this teacher 7 years ago for an intro class. I chose to take her the second time. Although I only got a 3.4 in her class, it was because of her that I became a history minor and history teacher. She is SO knowledgable & a great sense of humor.
She obviously knows her history but it is only a 100 level course and she seems to speak to the class as if we are all history majors.....drones on and on....not very personable....would not recommend this teacher to anyone
She is dry and monotone but this is sooo easy. She knows her history and she always makes herself available if you need her.
She is very unhelpful, lectures the whole time, doenot speak up ,has NO sense of humor, and has a ver ver very boring class
Let me tell you a story...once upon a time i used to love history. After taking this class, I just wished her teaching at Oakland to be history. She is so boring, monotone and wears the same thing to class everday. Have insomnia? Take this class!
Absolute worst experience of my life. Try going to class everyday and taking 6 pages of notes each time. Do not get the book either because she does not make one reference to it. Think about this:beginning of semester: 30+students, end of semester:12.
Class is HARD!! But at times it has interesting points of view!
Get ready to listen to somebody talk for an hour straight. Maybe she'll get to 3 topics in one class. God help you. The class is tolerable...but PAINSTAKINGLY tolerable.
Shelly may be monotone, but her class is very informative. If you didn't care for history before, you may more after you take her class. Take lots of notes and study them often. Don't try to cheat on book readings, she caught everyone who did.
Ms. Shelly is a bad history teacher. She knows a lot, but she would be a better historian than a teacher. She's monotone and boring, and she uses a lot of essay questions on her test. The answers she wants doesn't match her lecture content or the book.
do not ever take this class
she is not really that bad she is very nice and if you do the readings and take good notes its pretty easy
I found that her lectures are dull because her voice is too monotone. It almost seems like she doesn't enjoy teaching history. She's just not very enthusiastic about teaching history, therefore her lectures make people want to fall asleep.
BORRRRIIINNNGG. I think she is the worst professor I have EVER taken. She s boring, dosen't go from the book, just stands at the front of class and mumbles.
she isn't as bad as people say. if you listen in class and study your notes you should do ok. she expects alot of you but if you listen to her lectures(which can get boring) you'll do fine.
Do whatever you can NOT to take this class. She is the most boring, monotone woman I have seen in my life. History is her life, and she'll go on and on taking about Puritans. You also have to read some thick books! I feel asleep in her class-literally
Shelly knows her stuff. On the first day of class I looked behind me for the teleprompter. She talks so fast, filled with soo much information in 1 hour I'll have 12 pgs of Notes. For a 100 level class it's too much work and the tests aren't very easy.Dont!
She was the most horrible teacher i ever had. She sounds like agent smith from matrix with her monotone voice, it is so hard to concentrate on what she says because she talks so fast and its so boring. Don't take this class, unless you love history!
Relatively boring but it's not like you can make things like the pilgrims more entertaining. She grades real easy on the exams but the mid-term project...take your time on that.
Grab a pillow and a blanket cause the whole class all semester is a giant lecture. As long as you take in good notes (you'll have about 10 pages at least in one class hour) you'll do okay. I didn't read the book and still got a 3.8 in the class.
Shelly is monotone, but I got used to it and found history more intersting then ever before. You don't have to read the book her tests are straight from her lectures. Take a lot of notes, and make sure to be very detailed on your essays.
Very boring...grades really hard on your essays..and most of your questions will be from the study guide...be prepared to write lots of notes...she knows what shes talking about and class takes forever!!! DONT!
Boring doesnt describe this professor. She was untolerable... I would warn any person thinking about taking her class to NOT TAKE IT. She is the worst Professor I have ever had!!! She is monitone and you can tell she devotes her LIFE to history.
Very dull class, she paces back and forth the entire class period and just talks like a book, tests are essays and she is a tough grader.
I took two classes with her. I thought she was very articulate, and she knows her stuff. She has a unique lecture style, if your a bad student, dont take her, it takes a lot of memorization, but any good student can pass no problem.
MONOTONE
She knows her stuff inside and out, but you'll be in such a deep coma from her speaking style it won't matter. Lectures from memory and never makes a mistake or looks at notes. I think she may be a robot. She makes history into a chore when it can be fun.
She must have a recording in her head she teaches from memory for 2 hours. The class is easy if you can withstand the funeral diretor like excement.
I thought she was a very poor professor that seemed uninteresting in what she was teaching. I never knew history could be boring until I had her as a teacher!
This prof is not for those easily bored. She lectures the whole time-but if you take thorough notes on everything she says, you don't have to buy the textbook. It is rough but I honestly learned alot, even if her lectures did sound freakishly pre-recorded.
she is awful. Her lectures are extremely boring. All she does is walk back in forth, lecturing from memory with a voice that will surely make almost anyone fall asleep. Her grades unreasonably and show less enthusiasm than any other teacher that I have had in my entire life.
worst teacher ive ever had !!!!!!!!!!!!
Quizzes can be difficult, exams are usually all essay. She is a very hard grader on papers and tests.
This teacher speaks in monotone. She lectures all hour and does so without taking many breathers. Her quizzes are tricky and her exams are essay. Pay attention, go to class, take good notes and study, you'll pass.
Lectures like a funeral director in a monotone voice; keeps student participation & interaction to a minimum-doesn't want to get too far off her memorized plan. Knows the material, tough essay tests, rarely smiles, & that bothers me. Take her if you take good notes & can survive 45 hrs of lecture.
She lectures like a computer. Knows the material better than anyone else. HARD grader! Take good notes, and you will be fine.
zzzzzzzz
Holy Crap.... I fell asleep everyday, sometimes while taking notes.... just bring up relgion, and her and her Puritan self will be all over it
She lectures every class so take good notes and don't fall asleep. She is a very hard grader so do the best you can. She really knows the material and I think she makes the topic interesting. You can tell she really knows what she is talking about. Best professor I had first semester!
DO NOT TAKE!! She grades very harsh and lectured for two hours straight every class! Very boring, if at all possible, take another prof!
lectures werent too bad. try not to let her voice hypnotize. exams all written. 2 quizzes multiple choice. pretty easy exams as long as you went to class and took good notes. had to read a book and do paper other then that never read the textbooks and got 3.8 overall. reminds me of gretchen
She really knows what she's talkig about... but very boring lectures. She knows who all comes to class everyday and who all shows up just for the exams. She's a tough grader. If possible take another professor. Good Luck in that class
Extremely hard grader. On exams explain in detail and just blab. I thought I did well on her exam and failed. She is boring and graders harder than any rhetoric teacher i have ever had!!!!!!!!!!!!
BEWARE, monotone just like everyone said, I also thought I did well on the tests and ended up doing bad thanks to her ridiculous grading. I also came to every class and took detalied notes. Very difficult to get questions in. Was a horrible experince, AVOID!!
SHE'S SOOOOO BORING.. she expects a two page essay on her exams.. she's an extremely hard grader. this professor can talk for the whole day if she wanted to.. she gets really happy when students ask her questions. she needs a makeover ASAP.
PLEASE DONT TAKE HER!! i am a good student and i studies my ass off and NEVER missed a class...i took excellent notes and i still did terrible...she expects a book for each essay in her tests...she is a ridiculous grader...dont getr me wrong...she knows her stuff but she sucks
Clearly, Shelly is a million years old... there's no other explaination for how she can know SO MUCH about everything. Her lectures were pretty dry, and she graded pretty hard, but I really learned a lot from the class. I expected to do much worse than I did.
Lectures are super boring and she is a very tough grader. But YOU WILL learn your history, like it or not. This class stressed me out and I thought I deserved better grades than I got on the tests/paper, but my final grade was surprisingly high. She does know her stuff.
she loves thomas jefferson a lot and makes you read uncle tom's cabin. she is sometimes kind of funny, but it usually gets pretty boring in there. the tests weren't very hard, but the essay kind of sucked. i like her though. and she learns everyone's names even if it seems like she doesn't.
After trying extremely hard after my first test of a 1.6 i passed the class with a 3.0. It was a shock but if you try hard and write a ton of pages on your essay and explain well you will succeed in her class. Very nice lady.
really boring. i fell asleep every day and never meant to. nice lady. my problem was all the useless notes we took. for instance, we read a 200 page book for one essay question. tough to ace the class but not to hard to pass. write a good amount, even if you have to bs and stay on pace with lectures
Very nice. Class can be dull but she definitely knows her stuff. Come to class, the books won't help you much on exams. Take the essay assignment really seriously and prepare to get a hand cramp from writing so much on exams. Oh and ask a question in class just for kicks to see her classic smirk :)
by far the most BORING class i have ever taken in my life. she knows way TOO much about history.. she talks for the entire hour without stopping. she's a REALLY tough grader.. but, i did learn a lot of history.
I hated this class! i found myself sleeping or skipping i most likely went to 2 weeks worth of class in a semester... she is hard on EVERYTHING! Boring as a log and so soft spoken you can hardley hear her
A very challenging class. She is obviously very intelligent and expects everyone to meet very high standards. It was very rare that she couldn't answer a question in great length. The papers and exams are tough and require great notes.
Easy enough class, little homework, although essays are tideous/arduous. Read the books, know the topics and you will be fine. If you are prone to pull a Colombine, do not attend this class. Lectures in that class will dement your mind with boredom. Thank goodness I did not have this class in high school.
She is very knowledgable. Test pretty easy as long as you show up for class and take good notes. She can be a little borning, but its not too bad if you bring along a cup of coffee. Shes very willing to help out with the essays.
Like mentioned from others she is VERY smart and does talk the entire hour. Before taking the first test find someone who's taken the same class with her and look at it you'll do better because even though it's multiple- choice it's hard. READ the 2 books but you don't need the textbook. Go to class because tests are off lectures!
I went to every class and studied for this class more than any other class I had, but it didn't matter. She grades essays against her own. If you don't write EXACTLY what she wrote, you get a bad grade. It's impossible. STAY AWAY!!
she knows her stuff thats for sure, but it's sooooo boring. her tests are not that bad with half being MC and the other half being essay...two choices on essays. i would say this class would probably be better with another teacher because its soo boring. be sure to bring a voice recorder so you can sleep..
Hmmmm...Where do I start? Good luck staying awake for one. Second, I'd rather be working the fields than sitting in this class. Tests are nearly impossible. You like reading 100 books? My advice is stay far away. VERY FAR! Looks like a witch too :-/. She's smart but that's cause she has no life!!
I think she believes shes a puritan, well at least she looks like one. Very boring cause she talks for hours and has a history book for a brain. If your looking for a teacher u want to at least look at and listen occasionally, she aint it.
class is boring but if u go and study the tests are easy. she gives u a study guide and essays are either one big one or 3 small ones just describing a term. she is open to helping and questions and there is only one paper and two tests and the final, easy gen ed, take with her she will make it easy but don't take in the morning!
To be honest, the class is very boring. But as long as u go to class and take notes u will do fine. The exams are really easy, especially the essays. You have to read 3 books, and write one paper.
hARD CLASS BUT WITH SUCH A HOT TEACHER IT GOES BY PRETTY QUICK. SHES HELPFUL AND WILL MEET WITH YOU OUTSIDE OF CLASS.
the lectures aren't bad, just take notes. the exams are what's hard... they seem easy until you get ur grade back! she is a difficult grader. oh and make sure to buy plenty of bluebooks with her.
She talks the whole class about the topics she writes on the board. However, i like her class and I believe she is a good teacher. Very interesting especially if you like history.
failed b/c she is terrible, very monotone, fell asleep everyday. deep voice is kinda hott though
She's a super hard grader and lectures can start to get boring, but then she'll say something hilarious (I don't think she even realizes it) and everybody wakes up. You always know what to expect in this class because she lectures continuosly for the WHOLE period. Her voice kind of bothered me too but it could have been worse. I ended up with a 3.4
Okay... this class was by far one of the WORST classes I have ever taken. She is one of the harshest graders I have had. Her lectures SUCK too. She talked about the same subject for the entire two hours when we still had a ton of crap to go over. If you have her... be afraid... be VERY afraid... HISTORY SUCKS!
She is one of the most effective proffesors i have taken. she is knowlegeable and if you put in the work you will get a good result. take really good notes. tests are directly from the lectures. this is a true college class, not a blow off class. dont take if you dont like HST. If you do, you will be disapointed.
Very knowledgeable about the material and made it interesting. Her tests were mostly essay but you could pick which one you wanted to do out of a list. For the final, she gave us a list of topics so you have an idea ahead of time what you could be tested on. If you go to class you will do very well. Fair grader and helpful.
She's kinda monotone, but she's still interesting and clear, unlike the textbook. I think I'll post on here again after the first test or paper so I can tell you how hard a grader she was to me. I'm shocked she didn't have a hotness factor before I posted.
Very monotone, pretty boring, but she is very knowledgeable about the material and she makes sure you know it very well. If you show up a majority of the time you will do well because she drills the material into your head. She is very helpful if you are having problems as well.
Very tough grader. Doesn't budge on the grades either, even if you talk to her. Lectures are interesting only if you really get into it.
I thought she was a GREAT teacher. I have taken hst 115, 114 and 102 so far at OU and she was by far the clearest and best prof i've had. YES she is very boring- its history people! if u dont like it, it is very boring. however i think she is very clear i took good notes and she gives u a small review sheet before tests got a 3.6 RECOMEND!!
Shelly is a great story teller. She is very clear with what she wants you to know. You just have to pay attention in lecture. Read the fiction assigned- you will be tested. She grades fairly- I'm an upper classman and this is cake, but this class will definitely prep freshman for writing/studying.
just about the most boreing teacher EVER BUT shes dam smart and knows ALL. never found a question she doesnt know the answer to. hard class...and hard papers but if you put the work into it you will learn alot and you can come to like the class. THE PAPERS ARE HARD
BEWARE She is very boring and lectures the whole class time from memory writing nothing on the board. She is very soft spoken and has a voice that made the whole class fall asleep. She is a harsh grader just a total bad prof. and should not even bea teacher.
she knows her stuff, kind of boring, but it can be interesting if you try, she grades hard, and since she only has 4 grades in the class you have to do well on all of them or your screwed. she teaches very well and if you want to you can learn alot. i wont recomend her (shes boring) but definetly dont go out of your way to avoid her.
She's very clear in her lectures, but her quizzes and exams are hard, and she grades hard. I would avoid her. I might have to take this class over again, and I hardly ever do that.
class is based on lecture so you must go to all classes or your screwed, but if you go and take good notes you're fine. midterm is worth 20% of your grade and final is 40% and they are both entierly essay. i had this class at 8 in the morning and missed some classes and it made the class much harder. be careful if you have her early
DO NOT TAKE THIS PROF! I attended every single class. 5 pages of notes a day.My overall gpa was a 3.5 but thanks to her class it is now a 3.4. As usual, I did well in all of my other classes.I got a 2.4 in this class.I'm a senior. She is very smart but thinks this is a 500 level course, NOT intro. If U care about UR grade don't take her! HARD essay exams
as a freshman, i was really surprised!she was my first class of the day at 8 am and almost always fell asleep.i took 5 pages on average of notes per class, using my laptop.my written notes were not good enough. drink coffee before class, she may put you to sleep.she means well, she's a great professor, but taught me how to study like a mad woman!

Class is relatively easy. Attendance is not required, but it helps alot to go. She has a monotone voice, so don't take the class first thing in the morning. As long as you stay awake in class and read the books, you'll do really well.
Good teacher. Very clear, gives good review sheets before each test. Just go to class and take lots of notes.
This was my second class with Shelly. While you take a LOT of notes, the tests are composed off the notes. If you attend classes, take notes, use the review sheets, you can do very well. I thought she was very amusing. I took her at 8am and had no problem.
She is brilliant. Very monotone, can get a little boring, but i dont like history and she kept me interested. I had a hard time in this class though, her tests are very tough. You take a TON of notes
She was VERY monotoned and boring. I love History but this class was way boring. I could hardly stay awake... Shes a good teacher but boring as heck.
little difficult, but you will not learn any more in any class...by far the most educated teacher i have met
Definitely knew what she was talking about, and was helpful to those who asked. Every class period was a lecture, and was extremely boring. She spoke with a monotone, and did nothing to hold the students' interest. She was also a pretty hard grader, which is bad considering there were only 5 grades for the whole semester. Otherwise, a good teacher.
Had her for AM HST pre Civil War. She's a pretty good lecturer and it's easy to follow, but she grades pretty hard. Her tests are mult choice + essays and she has you do a book report which was graded really hard. I thought I did really well and I acutally READ it and I got a 2.9. She DOES give a study guide for tests though.
Horrible...you have to sit in the front row just to HEAR her... People ask her to speak louder and she tells them to either move closer to the front or close the door... What kind of answer is that? HARD GRADER and only two exams, two quizzes and one book report...checks every paper for plagerism so it takes a month to get the report back.
Horrible class to take! Hardest class in the world. All lecture very monotone. Teacher was terrible
She knows her stuff, and will tell it to you if you listen. To get a 4.0, just come to class, take good notes, and show up for test days.
Unless you are a History Major, DO NOT TAKE THIS CLASS!!, Very knowledgeable professor but, the tests are hard and if you don't take notes you will FAIL the class.
my opinion may be a little biased because i am a history major, but i thoroughly enjoyed prof shelly. had her for history 115, and she was extremely clear and concise. lectures could get a tiny bit boring, but she annunciated and spoke very well so things were understandable. a bit of a tough grader, but if you know your stuff you should be golden.
Every class she lectures, besides days of quizzes and exams. She talks the entire lecture and is monotone but makes stories interesting. For the most part she is unbiased. There are two quizzes(fairly easy), one paper and two exams (entirely essay). Her comments on the paper and exams are misleading because you expect a lower grade than you get
This class was absolutely dreadful. She told the class if we showed up she would give us more credit for our final grade. On top of that I completed ALL of our 4 tests, and she still gave me a 0%! None of what she mentions in class is even on her tests. DO NOT TAKE THIS CLASS!
Professor Shelly is amazing. She is very knowledgable and clearly loves her topic. She is very clear in her expectations and thorough in her lectures. Show up to class, take good notes, and read assigned texts...thats college. No reason not to do well in her class.
Professor Shelly is a very knowledgable professor who cares for her topic. She tells you exactly what is expected of you and is always willing to help those who take the initiative to go talk to her. Her exams are directly from her lecture making it easy to follow. Show up, take notes, and you will do fine.
While she is clearly knowledgeable in her subject, and passionate about it, Shelly's class was torture. She talks in a montone voice the whole hour, It's the most boring thing on earth, and i usually love history. Do not take her class, but if you have to, don't take it in the morning.
I was interested in history until I got her class. Very boring, not very helpful, and a VERY hard grader on tests....don't take her class!!!!
WORST CLASS I HAVE EVER TAKEN IN MY LIFE. She obviously loves history, but for those who don't, she makes it a MILLION times worse than it already is. VERY monotonous and speaks as if she's reading straight from the book. Extremely hard grader, too. Half the class has dropped, along with myself- near impossible when you hate history to begin with.
I would not not recommend her to anyone. She is a nice person. But she is SO BORING! She has a monotone voice and talks the entire time! I ended up skipping half of the semester. She talks about the material like she was there, kind of strange. The paper you have to write - she grades it extremely hard. And the two tests are entirely essay.
She is a good teacher who clearly loves what she teaches. She lectures all hour and gives 2 essay tests and 2 multiple choice quizes. You need to review for the quizes and exams, but both are pretty easy. I like history and she made it very relatable and presented it in ways that will make you remember. Overall she was a great teacher.
The first day of class she told us she was once accused of being a vampire. so that right there tells you the class is gonna suck. she acts like she was around during the founding of America. incredibly boring. out of 60 students maybe 30 showed up everyday. and her grading is horrible.
Quiet soft spoken. Just take notes and listen good class though
Terrible teacher. She knows history, but she is so monotone and boring that it is so hard to pay attention. I love history, but she makes it so hard to pay attention or care. Ugh. Mary Jo Miles is the best history teacher at OU.
She really cares about the topic, and she does a good job of making you understand the interesting points of the issue, with little stories here and there and stick with you and help you remember things. She has a sense of humor, but you have to be paying attention to pick up on it. I definitely recommend her, plus she's easy to understand
Think of a traditional, boring, monotone history professor and that is exactly what she is. Class only has 4 grades, 2 exams, a paper, and the final (which is all written). Doesn't use anything associated with technology and has ZERO personality! Don't take her!
This woman definitely knows history, but her lectures can get a bit boring. She is fairly strict with her grading, though. Expect to travel back to the 80's, because she uses no technology, I don't think she even owns a computer
Horribly boring, Monotone, only five grades, a paper, 2 quizzes, and the midterm and final. She skips over important things like the American Revolution!!!!!! knows a lot about history but gets too side tracked about irrelevant info.
Hard grader, monotone, grades are based off of 2 quizzes, a midterm, a paper, and the final. Her lectures are decent-she gets all excited at some parts but doesn't try to show it. She's an okay professor just an extremely hard grader for a 100 level class
DO NOT TAKE! She's monotone, hard grader, lots of notes, and is so boring it's hard to stay focused. If you're looking for an easy A this would not be the class. 2 quizzes, a paper, midterm, and final. Final is worth 40% of your grade.
She is a very knowledgable teacher. You can tell she really cares about history. But her lectures are very long and boring. She speaks very monotoned. Hard to pay attention. Only 4 grades: 2 exams, a paper, and the final. If you have her i recommend sitting close to the front so you can pay attention.
I hated history before I took this class and now I am totally interested in it. She knows history! The class is all lecture and there is a lot of note taking but if you study for the tests and meet with her about the paper then you'll get a good grade. The other reviews aren't fair and were people expecting a gen ed class and an easy A.
She's a nice lady, but her class is just HARD. The grades are: 2 quizzes, midterm, paper, and final. She ended up cutting our final by 1/3 of the course, which was nice because stuff from the 1600s is hard to understand. Very strict grader. Not my first choice in professors
So boring and monotone! Def take someone else if you are able to. If not then good luck because she expects every little detail to be memorized on exams! Hard class...will never take her again.
Very monotoned and talks about too much detail. would be alot easier if she focused on only the main points of the history. if you pay attention and take good notes you will do fine. i never had to use the book for the class
She's very knowledgeable and interesting. As long as you pay attention and takes notes, you'll be fine.
Very knowledgeable teacher. She defiantly knows what she's talking about and you can tell she loves history. Her class is all lecture and the tests are straight from the notes. You won't need the history text book but you will need the other two smaller books. I would defiantly recommend her, I really enjoyed the class!
She is very monotone. But she makes the topics very interesting. Almost like she is telling a story, not reading from a text book. She is more than happy to answer questions, just gets irritated when you come in late, then ask a question on something already asked before you arrived. DO NOT SHOW UP LATE, she doesn't like it.
Very Informal. Keeps you interested. She's helpful. You need to come to class everyday (Unless your sick or an emergency)All you do in the class is take notes. And pay attention. The quizzes, exams, and papers are a piece of cake if you study. She'll answer your question if you have one on the topic. Overall, I recommend her. Very great Professor.
Attendance is key since everything is lecture and the notes are what you study from. The class is very simple but I think that and the way she teaches it helps you learn it more. I've never liked history but I actually learned a lot. You have to write one paper but thats the only assignment outside of class besides reading the books.
She is amazing! She is a hard grader for essays, but she is an excellent speaker who obviously knows what she is talking about
Most boring, stuck-up teacher ever. Graded based on weather she liked you, hard to pay attention to. Take anybody but her. She is really hard to pay attention to. Straight out of the 50's
My best advice is DO NOT take her class early in the morning...She is super nice but if you're even a little bit tired, you'll be asleep by the end of class. Her tests are really easy. She tends to grade the two essays pretty tough though. I got a 3.6 going 2 out of the 3 days a week, but I always got the notes from someone and studied a bit
Honestly the worst teacher I have ever had. Do not take her class! I ended up dropping her class. She is a very hard grader and makes the class more difficult than it needs to be. You have 4 grades.(2 tests, paper, and exam). Which are all worth 25% of your grade. Very hard class. Do not take her class!!
She obviously knows what se is talking about, but her lectures are very boring. she stands at the front of the room without using any kind of notes and just talks. her tests are pretty easy, but she is a tough grader on the essays. at the end of the semester, she will help you out if you talk to her. very understanding.
I have her now & She talks the whole hour. She gives like 3 quizzes, 1 paper, Mid -term & Final. You dont need to attend to pass b/c you could get the notes from someone. OTD I dont think you should take her.
This lady knows her stuff. The class is 110% lecture and taking notes. You don't NEED to show up but I recommend it. READ THE TWO BOOKS. that will make or break your grade. Don't sign up for a morning class, you will fall asleep!
She is monotone and a tough grader. Don't buy any books, but come to class often and take really good notes. Have a study group before each exam. Her class is tough, so you really need to be prepared for the 3 exams.
I loved this class and this professor. To be fair, I find history very interesting which was very helpful for this class. It is all lecture and this lady knows what she's talking about. Take good notes and buy the novels, but don't bother buying the textbook. Sometimes she makes jokes, but you have to really be listening to notice!
She is very intelligent and you have to take good notes because her classes are just lecture. There's only 5 assignments all semester so you HAVE to read the first book, you can skim over the second book. Midterm and final exams were all essay, and two quizzes multiple choice. Take good notes, always go to class and you'll pass.
It's hard to listen to her at 8am. If you genuine like history this is an easy course for you. If you hate history this would be a very hard course for you. She has a monotone voice and stands in one spot. Sometimes she says some jokes but by the time you say them you would be sleeping. If you go to her office hours she will give you help.
DO NOT TAKE! RUN !history is one of my favorite subjects and she ruined it. I ended up dropping halfway. Boring long lecture. No notes are on screen. you have to take your own on hear say. So after you ha e like 30 pages of notes Then she'll be like ok test on Friday (no study guide) and you won't know what's on the test.
She puts an agenda on the board everyday but rarely gets through all of it. Lectures are long and her voice can make it boring. Overall she knows the information very well. She grades tough and grades are based 2 essay tests, 2 multiple choice quizzes, and a paper based on a book you have to read. Nice lady but you have to pay attention and study!
You are registering for classes right now looking up this professor to see if they are good, find someone else. This class is the most boring class I have ever taken in my life. Theres only a few tests and quizzes that are HARD, and that will make up your entire grade. So if you don't do too well on them, you are screwed. DO NOT TAKE THIS CLASS!!!!
While all material is presented in lecture she is still a great professor who cares for her students. On tests and papers she grades generously and often significantly will curve grades. She is very knowledgeable and is willing to help id you just ask. Be ready to attend because that is the only way to get any information.
If you plan on taking this class bright and early buy the biggest coffee you can find! Lectures are boring and there are no power points! Don't waste your money on the main book, unless you don't plan on attending any classes. She has been teaching this class for a long time and knows just what she wants in the essays. Final/ midterm are all essay
Definitely a lecture based class. You walk in and she has an outline of what she's going to talk about and you just have to take notes as she goes, but its really not hard to follow and she makes it really interesting. You have 4 quizzes, 2 exams, and 2 papers and thats it, but if you take good notes and study you'll do fine, no trick questions.
At first she came off as kind of conservative/serious, but I've grown very fond of her. She is cool and calm during her lectures and knows what she's talking about. She doesn't use powerpoint, instead she has an outline of her lectures up on the overhead. Copy these down before notes and use as a study guide. She'll help edit your paper if you ask.
Lectures daily. 3 exams and the lowest dropped. Exams are essay. 1 paper. Final exam is essay and covers entire semester. If you take great notes, you'll do fine. Lectures are more like a story and mainly what you are tested on.
No visual during lectures, just a list of things that will be discussed, only way to get notes is to go to class. Grade distribution: Three tests (all essays, best two taken) 1/3+essay based on one of the books you will read 1/3+final 1/3. Extremely knowledgeable, not too tough with grading, but you will need to study at least 1:30/2 hours per test
Shelly been the only history teacher I have ever had who tells relevant, funny, and useful stories. She will point out times when an event or person was petty or absurd. She paints a picture of American history that keeps me awake, even if she has an amazingly soothing voice. Bonus, she makes me smile with her adorably dorky outfits.
Professor Shelly is very nice and approachable. She is very detailed and specific in her lectures, so come to class with a laptop to catch all the notes. Must know material from the lectures for tests. The only book you need to read is the one that is for the essay, does not rely on the use of the textbook. To get a good grade is very possible!
Professor Shelly knows her history extremely well! No textbook required but a few reading books you will need to actually read to do well on the paper. Take really good notes and you will excel on exams
IF YOU HAVE GET GET OUT NOW!!!!! She is the WORST history teacher I have ever had. She lectures the WHOLE class with no visuals, outline, NOTHING! Not to mention she talks like a snail, so if you have her at 8am GOOD LUCK WITH STAYING AWAKE!!! She gives no study guide for the tests and they're essay and she grades extremely hard. GET OUT NOW!!
From someone who normally hates history, her class wasn't that bad. Her lectures were interesting to listen to and easy to take notes on. Your grade is based off 3 tests, your lowest of the three test grades being dropped, and a paper on a book. She's a really tough grader and isn't afraid to drop your GPA.
Her lectures are interesting and she really knows what she is talking about, but she sometimes goes through topics quickly during lecture. The only assignment is a book report and 3 tests through out the semester. She is very approachable and an fairly easy grader, so this class is not too difficult if you come to class, take notes, and study.
4 tests in total; 3 in class essays&1 MC test, takes 3 best scores. Grade based on those 3 tests. 2 books for this class, but don't have to read them. All in class essays had 2-4 options to choose from; just don't pick the one relating to the book. I took it at 8am, wouldn't recommend. She doesn't use any technology &her voice will put you to sleep
Not a bad teacher if you are willing to pay attention. She knows the topics shes covering and is always ready for class. You have to read 3-4 books and write 4-5 papers but they arent super long. If you bring your laptop to class and take notes on everything she says you will be perfectly fine.
Do not take this class or any classes where Cara Shelley teaches it. She is an unnecessarily tough grader and will fail you on your assignments without hesitation. There are only four grades that decide your overall grade and there is an essay that she will pick apart how terrible it is no matter how god you think you did. I do not recommend.
she was really easy to understand when she was talking about things, It made sense. However, shes a very tough grader. She Focused so much on my wording and my grammar, rather than my examples. Got marked down a point for saying after analyzing because she wanted me to say after reviewing. Marks you down if you dont word things how she would
Classes were very boring, and her monotone voice didnt help. She goes over tons of things during class, with an oral lecture, which was horrible because she would go so fast. Didnt really take much out of that class. Only need the two reading books because one is on a test and you have to write a paper based on the other. Dont need the history 1
Completely incompetent as a professor. She builds the class's grades out of 3 grades. She grades her papers off of grammar. You heard me. As a HISTORY professor, she grades papers based on grammar. Shelly graded my paper as a D saying I used "internet sources" when she literally couldn't prove what I used. Because I DIDN'T. Highly don't reccomend
I have taken two classes with Prof. Shelley. I really enjoyed both and felt I learned a lot. You have to be ready to work in this class, as she has high expectations but not unreasonable ones. When everything went online because of COVID, i was not a huge fan of how she continued the class but I also know they did not have much time to prepare.
The class is entirely lecture based, but it was honestly one of my favorite classes I've taken. I don't believe attendance was mandatory, but missing even 1 lecture can definitely make the course more difficult. textbook reading was assigned as homework every week, but she never checked that we read and all info was covered in the lectures anyways.
Professor Shelly teaches a strictly a lecture based class with no notes or anything. You listen to her monotone voice for 2 hours straight, trying to make you own notes. She bases the grades off of 3 essays, in a history class. I don't recommend her to anyone. Highly Disappointed.
I can see why some may struggle with Prof. Shelly. Her lectures are strictly talking for the whole class period with no breaks, but if you take notes and are engaged in her lectures you will pass. I was able to do just fine with not reading the course book by just getting down all the information from lectures. Overall she is a great professor!
If you do everything you should and study a bare minimum, you will do well in this class, she graded on a paper assignment which was worth I believe 15% of our grade, and 4 exams, with the worst grade dropped at the end of the semester. definitely a lecture based class so prepare to take notes!!!
