She's is shy, but very knowledgable and provides interesting story-ridden lectures. If you do the reading and take good notes in class, you should get a good grade. I liked her class a lot. She is a very nice professor.
Her class is challenging, but you learn a lot. Her lectures sometime seem to last forever, and they are boring. Dont plan on missing any class. If you are interested in history take her.
Ms. Shelly is a wonderful instructor who is very knowlegable in her field. I learned alot, but you have to take a lot of notes to absorb the vast amount of information. If you take good notes and study for the tests, you'll do great!
Pretty easy, nice lady.
In order to receive a A or A- in Prof. Shelly's class you MUST attend and pay attention or else good luck. Take notes and study for the exams. On the exams write anything and everything you can think of. She expects a lot. However, I enjoyed the class very much and she is a very nice lady.
Extremely extremely knowledgeable woman.. very polite and modest. However, she expects a whole lot. And if you want to fathom the definition of "Monotone!!" definitely attend her lectures. I wonder at how some people stay awake.
I will not argue about her knowledge, but for a 100 level class I think she expects too much. I am a history major and I got better grades on my 300 level tests. Her class is not very energetic. I had her for a 3 hour lecture and i almost died.
Three hour class with her can drive you nuts! She knows her stuff, but it can get boring. Make sure you do your reading and study!
Great professor and knows her stuff. I had the 3 hour lecture and loved it, but I also love history. Expects a lot but it's worth it. I always reccommend her to anyone I know needing history.
Professor Shelly is a very clear and good teacher. She knows the subject like no one I have ever seen. She grades pretty hard though and is very boring.
Good instructor if you like history. 2 quizzes (25%), Midterm- essay test (25%), Paper (25%), take home essay Final (25%). I got As on both quizzes, a B on the midterm, an A- on the paper and still managed to get an A in the class.
She was nice and very knowledgeable, but EXTREMELY BORING.
Nice teacher, knows her stuff. I do not suggest taking her for this class unless you are extremely interested in the subject. She lectures the whole three hours and is extremely boring. The class felt like it would never end.You have to take alot of notes.
She is monotone, boring, but the key to her class is to absolutely love history, write down everything she says, and study it for all tests; extra, unimportant information helps. If you can get past that and not fall asleep, because of her voice, you'll get an A or B. Never miss a day, you'll be sorry!!
you need to know everything to even pass this class, well some of us are not history majors... we major in pre-med... Highly unrecommended... while othe teachers have take home essays ... in her class you need to know millions of things just to pass.... take my advice and take someone else... you won't be sorry....
I thought pre-med majors were supposed to be smart--what a baby. Professor Shelly is very informative. Do the work, and you'll pass with no problem.
two words: stay away.... this teacher is sooooooo hard..... no matter what you study, she still grades you hard... not recommended...
Prof Shelly is what you make of her! Her exams are right from her lectures, if you study you will do fine it's all up to you. There is a lot to remember but she tell you all about it in her lectures so you MUST attend her lectures. There are two books to read but they are very interesting and will be covered on the exams.
She is monotone but she is the most organized Prof. I have had here. Her lectures are in outline format. Don't miss one. Her tests (mostly essay) are right from the lecture. You don't even need the text book if you attend all lectures. There are two other books you must read but they are interesting/good reads. I enjoyed her and would take agai
She is great! She is very helpful. ALL exams are essay format, she gives you 5 areas that were covered and you write on 4 of them, your choice. She lectures every class for 3hrs so you must attend and take EXTREMLY good notes. You have only 1 paper but make it your lifes work 2/3% of your grade is on this paper. All in all she is very nice
Very knowledgable. My fav Prof! She will spell out everything she wants. She will expect that you devote yourself to the paper as it is a third of your grade. ALL exams are from her lectures and they are all ESSAY, so take good notes. I missed one class and was LOST.ATTEND ALL CLASSES. Final ALL ESSAY, know your stuff.
i have her for hist 111. shes nice, but BORING and MONOTONOUS. some people actually fall asleep in her class. ur hand might also fall off from all the notes u have to write.....
had her for a night class so it was 3 hrs long and boring. Yet very easy to follow and an easy A.
WORST teacher EVER! I had harder upper level classes than this and I did better in those. She's VERY monotone and it's annoying. ALL exams are ESSAY. This class ruined my GPA & now I have to retake Hist 112. If someone would've warned me I would've stayed away. Do me this favor and STAY AWAY!I had this class a year ago & it STILL bothers me!
Very well organized professor. She speaks very clearly and lays out evertyhing right in front of you. Ver methodical and easy to digest. She is a very very good teacher. You will take a lot of notes however.
This professor is one of the best I've had. You have to attend class (isn't that why we pay tuition?) because her tests are based off notes you take in class. You can tell she loves history because she knows the answer to any history-related question that I've seen asked (and asked myself). Her class is work, but worth the knowledge.
If you like history, you'll be fine. If you don't, get ready to die! This woman is a walking textbook, which is very useful if you pay attention in lecture, but can be EXTREMELY boring and usually monotonous. Tests are largely essay, so you really have to know the material, and there's one paper.
Second class with her and she is awesome. Tough class, lots of reading and the tests are all essay but if you put in the time you should do well. She is a walking textbook, there was not a question that she could not answer off the top of her head. I would recommend, especially for history majors.
It has been two years and this class still haunts me. Beware! Don't say I didn't warn you.
she is great. such a great instructor and makes it so easy to understand history.
As mentioned by other students, if your major is Hist than this course would be great. However, STAY AWAY if you are considering taking this course as an elective. This is an upper level course that is labeled incorrectly. There is a lot of reading, you must make it to every class, and the class is BORING! She is very nice but think about your GPA.
Great for Hist majors. However, all others should STAY AWAY if you are considering taking this course as an elective. This is an upper level course that is labeled incorrectly. There is a lot of reading, you must make it to every class, and the class is exhausting! She is very nice but think about your GPA.
Very good professor. She's very knowledgable about every single thing in history. I swear, I think she swallowed the textbook. Class was challenging, you have to read the book and take good notes. Worked hard but got a B at the end..
uhhhh...... only 5 grades per semester, i failed all the multiple choice questions because there were some things that were true on two answers. the only thing i did good on was the midterm and final. they were easier questions. do not have this prof!!!
As IFFF history isnt boring enough, this lady talks and talks the whole time, in one monotone voice that doesnt change from the first day of class until the last day, shes really informative and knows everything there is to know about history, drink alot of caffeine before coming to class, its unbelievably boring. oh, dont buy the book, take notes.
Ok should have read this before the class so now I will CONQUER. She's great becasue she knows it ALL. But this class is EXTREMELY hard and she is EXTREMELY a hard grader. TRUST ME, dont miss class, take every note you can, read, research, phone-a-friend..really it was THAT BAD. Think about it BEFORE you taker her..I should have
Thorough lectures, very tough grader, but also helpful and friendly. Take a lot of notes, you will need them.
EXTREMELY hard! Extremely boring! Thats all you need to know. I would rather pull my toe nails out with pliers
Take a lot of notes, I mean A LOT. I usually write about 2.5 to 3 pages of notes per class session. She is a very tough grader on tests, especially the essay portion.
I was shocked how much I liked this class. One thing I reccommend is to use a laptop for notes. I did not do this the first time and saw my test grade go from a C to an A-. Cara Shelly knows her history and its not boring either. The book isnt used much but is a good reference tool if you forget something. Three exams - Last is all essay- cumlative
Hyper-critical with regard to grading. Seven-paged term paper, and the way she grades it, you'd think it was a graduate level english paper. Not personable, nor does she enjoy small talk. Knows subject matter flawlessly. I'm doing better in my upper-level Economics course--if that's any indication.
Unreasonable amount of reading.
Has hard test and gives u a crappy marks on ur short answer ones... she expects u to write a paper for ur short answer questions, i doubt anyone could remember so much by memory... she knows her info well.
This is unbelievable! Prof Shelly, is a REAL college professor with REAL high expectations for her students. I learned so much from her and am grateful for the experience. I had no idea how lame my peers are. "Boring" and "hard" are criticisms made by intellectual midgets, pish.
Prof. Shelly is by far one of the most intelligent people I have ever met. And don't worry, she is very friendly. Her class is a lot of work, but with some effort, an A is possible. I'm glad I took the class.
THE BEST EVER ! Expect alot of writing but its an amazing class !
Very boring lectures, did not keep me interested or wanting to learn more.
If you're taking her for civil war and reconstruction make sure you read the books she assigns. If you don't the exams will wreck you. The was the only class that ever threatened to give me a C, but I managed to pull a B from wrecking the final. She's an awesome teacher, she represents how college should be, not for the feint of heart.
Easily one of the most brilliant people you will ever encounter. She can be slightly dry, but it's only because you can literally see her mind working. I got through the class without reading much and still got an A, but my understanding is that is not typical. Comprehension is everything with her; when in doubt: over-explain!
This teacher is VERYYYYYY mono-toned for 3 hours long. Makes history more boring than it is! Very strict grader on essays, down to every word!!!! Exams are all essay and the final as well. You can NOT afford to miss even one class day of notes.
Excellent lecturer and fair grader. If you attend every class, pay attention, take good notes, and can piece everything together in her exam essays, you'll do well. The key to passing her tests is displaying a good understanding of the themes she has discussed. It's not all about memorizing historical facts.
No amplifying information, expects you to know whats on the test.
Exams are essay, you must know your stuff to pass. I didnt read the text book, but the side books are a must 2 read for paper (1/3 of grade) and final (1/3 of grade)GO TO CLASS AND TAKE NOTES you'll be fine
Not very enthusiastic, got right to the point and that was it. Every lecture was the same, just hearing her talk and taking notes.. very boring.
very intelligent professor . . . she knew her info so well that it seemed like she was reading out of a book! attendance is definitely a must. you don't want to miss a word she says because the essay tests are based mostly on her lectures
She is extremely intelligent. She knows all of her stuff. She lectures the entire time, but she is interesting. You MUST TAKE NOTES THE WHOLE TIME if you want to pass. You MUST ATTEND CLASS & TAKE NOTES. The book is not helpful (don't even bother buying the textbook). 3 Essay Exams & 1 Paper & 1 Essay Final. She loves essays. MUST TAKE GOOD NOTES
She may be the most intelligent person I have ever met. Her lectures are more like a story-telling than just reciting facts for you to write down. Her lectures are extremely interesting and she is unbelievably knowledgeable. The class is quite difficult, so be prepared to read a lot work hard.
She knows her history. Im not sure how I pulled off an A-. Exams are essay (except for 1 MP) and you MUST write your heart out if you want a good grade. class is extremely difficult, but shes a nice lady. lectures are like storytelling, which kinda gets boring after an hour, but shes nice and lets you out early sometimes. prepare to memorize! HARD!
Worst lectures. Incredibly boring yet students need to practically write down every word she says and memorize it! She is smart and friendly enough but an impossibly tough grader.
lectures are very interesting, the only thing is that her voice can easily put any student to sleep. You'll be required to read up to 100-150 pages worth of info only to be asked to define 3-4 words.VERY HARD GRADER!One thing that I will say is that she is always willing to help those who are trying.REALLY shouldn't take this class.
I loved Professor Shelly! She expects a lot from her students but if you show up to lecture, read the textbooks, and study you will get an A. Her lectures are crystal clear, write down what she says and memorize it and you will do well. I learned more in her class than in any other history class in my life.
Hard class but not impossible to get an A. If you want to do well on tests you must put in a lot of time studying. Do not bother reading the book as you are only tested on her lectures.
Very monotone and boring. Makes even the most interesting topics seem dry. Her grading system is baffling--she seems to care more about length of essays (tests are all essays) than content or accuracy. Sort of killed Michigan history for me.
I was excited for this class until after the first test. Grading scale is ridiculous. Go to lecture, take all the notes you possibly can, study and memorize, but you still can't do well. She's an extremely hard grader. Write as much as you possibly can for the exams, spill everything you know. Didn't do well even with attending and studying hard
Two tests and and a paper about a reading in class. Her final is cumulative and all essay. The tests are not hard but she grades very tough on the essays. She expects the essays on the test to be very detailed and long.
She talks the entire time without blinking an eye or stopping to breath. She def. knows her stuff, when she lectures make sure she write every letter that comes out of her mouth. tests aren't hard but she's a veryyyy tough grader. She expects you to write a novel for each question like you were living during that Era
If you like (American) history, you will love this class and love this teacher. Her lectures are just her talking without stopping. All without a powerpoint! She knows her stuff insanely well. It is remarkable. I felt like I was watching a History Channel show every lecture. You better go to class, listen, and write down the topics from the board.
Professor Shelly is a nice person but a terrible instructor. She grades papers and exams as though she thinks she is an English professor. Although historians write well, prospective historians (like us) should not be penalized harshly for not writing as professionally or eloquently. Her lectures are long and boring. I would not recommend her.
This professor is like an encyclopedia, it is incredible. Lectures are dense, but she explains the material with clear causes and effects. All exams were essay format. I recommend keeping up with the assigned readings. They definitely help when it comes to exam time. And yes, the final was cumulative...
DO NOT TAKE THIS CLASS!!!!!!!! I CRY EVERYDAY
DO NOT TAKE THIS CLASS!!!!!!!! I CRY EVERYDAY. YOU WILL NOT PASS
Write every single thing down that she says during lecture. Tests are essay and based mostly off of her lectures. Be extremely detailed when writing essays on the exams and write as much as you can. This is basically a course testing your memorization skills. Read all material as well. I worked very hard for an A-...
She took over for another professor, so we followed his syllabus making it a little different than her other classes, I think. We had partner presentations along with tests and quizzes throughout, mainly essay writing. When she lectures, she does just that, so make sure to pay attention and take a lot of notes!
This class seems intimidating at first, but even if you miss a few classes you will pass if you take good notes while you are there. There are also many books that are assigned to read, but if you attend class you will know the information of the exams since they are all essays and based off of the lectures.
I had her class back in 2012. Her format was all essay and her lectures were so long and boring, but very detailed. She knew the material so much that I dont think she had a guide. If she did, she did not glance at it once during class time. Overall, very intelligent woman and makes you work for your grade.
Her tests are three questions, 1 about the material, 2 about the book you read. You pick one. She doesn't show power-points, just talks. She wants DETAILED INFO and she is incredibly critical of everyone's work - nothing is good enough!!!!! If you can, avoid her at all costs. If you're a history major, change. She drops the lowest test grade.
I am not a history major or minor... This class is difficult. Be ready to take great notes, READ the material, and do well on the writing assignments she gives. You will have to put in A LOT of effort and time into getting a decent grade in this class. She is very dry but if you are interested in the material then it makes it a little better.
2 textbooks, 2 novels, 1 is REQUIRED ("Major Problems"). Three tests, lowest grade is dropped. Her final was easier than I thought it would be (cumulative). Attendance is not required, but it is a lecture class, and she DOES NOT use canvas. I SUGGEST audio recording lectures and get the most out of note taking. Get started on Midterm essay EARLY!!!
She is incredibly knowledgeable and passionate about history. She doesn't use power point and lectures the entire time so there is a ton of note taking. There is a paper discussing an assigned novel but other than that no other books are necessary. 2 tests are essays requiring immense detail and the 3rd is multiple choice. Drops lowest test grade.
Prof Shelly is brilliant, lecturing without notes or powerpoint. She appreciates when you ask questions and she'll gladly answer in detail. LOTS of reading, but you get to choose your essay question for the 3 exams and the lowest score is dropped. There's 2 moderately difficult papers that you should not procrastinate on. DEFINITELY TAKE NOTES!
this teacher is one of the worst I've had, she single handedly destroyed my grade what was suppose to be a easy A slam dunk some how turned into a high c low b not sure yet. I have straight a's not any more if I were to get graded on knowledge of class I would've aced it forsure but I received a d+ on a really important paper off grammar and citing
Need to attend the lectures, and get ready to take notes. A lot of reading of books and papers but no textbook required. Grades really fast and gives back feedback. Need to work hard for one big writing assignment but plenty of time to work on it. DO NOT procrastinate for this class. Graded by few things.
I can 100% recommend this professor if you want only essay tests and papers. I also recommend her if you hate your life and want to drop your GPA.
She is a very tough grader. She expects you to go into so much detail in short amounts of time. She doesn't let you know anything about what the tests are going to look like and is vague about everything. There are only tests and papers in this class. Her lectures give a lot of information but its a lot to remember for not knowing whats on the test
