u know what,I had my essay edited by both tutor and writing center and I worked on it more than 3 times and still got an F...
She is the worst teacher I've ever had...she only gives ppl either an F/C-..don't take her!!

VERY hard marker. I lost lots of confidence in writing because of her. I had red ink marked all over my essays. She even circled my name! I got a 5 on my LPI and the highest mark she gave me was a C. I dropped the course.
She is not that great. I have never done so bad in English.
Incredibly unhelpful and shrewed woman. I would like to see her write anything.

Carell seems all nice at first, but she isn't. She is one tough marker, and even after her writing center told me my paper was excellent, she gave me a C+...avoid her!!!!
If you are thinking of taking her class.. RUN!!!Her class was boring and the marking was terrible. I never got higher than a C- on essays. This is from a student who got A's in a second year english course!!! Brutal for first year.
She's by far the worst teacher I have ever had. Carell if your reading this you need to give your head a shake...the only reason she has students in her classes is b/c she teaches first yr english and no1 knows who she is. She'll kill your grades!

Absolutly Horrible. Condesending. Does not even teach, just talks about her "glory" years as an editor. For the love of god don't take her. Get her out of Langara.

SO EASY!Just talk to her,ask for advice,get her to like you.The lowest mark she gave me was 97%.If you ask her for help she will go over your papers with you way before they are due.She is really sweet and caring if you just give her a chance!
If by any reasons she is the only one teaching English for a particular semister, skip it and wait for the next term. here are the reasons: 1)She is unfriendly and unwilling to help, 2) She is useless and 3) She suck.

She is mean...in the sense she calls on students and if you can't answer she replies with "come on, you're a 2nd year student, you should start participating". She marks moderately, giving me Cs. Her midterms are written responses in which she grades them super hard...like 50 marks a question!
carrell was extremelly boring. I actually fell asleep a couple of times. Her marking is so hard. when she goes over a paper with you, the feedback you recieve is to a complete minimal. I do not suggest her to anyone. She is rude, and always so agitated.....stay away!
This woman is so mean. I dunno why Langara lets her teach here. I'm an A student & I got an F on an in class essay that I prepared so hard for. She's impatient, nasty & I never learned anything from her class. Avoid having her at all costs. She'll crush your self-esteem w/ that giant foot of hers
She does pick on students, she rarely gives any 'useful' feedback, however, she is very clear as to what she is looking for on tests/papers. She goes over all the material in-depth, and helps each student understand clearly. She's a bit of a hard maker... & She HATES Students Who DON'T Particpate!!!

At the beginning of the term, I thought she seemed great; my opinion rapidly changed. Carell is rude and ****y without reason. She has a ridiculous marking scheme where she grades a short and simple test question out of 50. She leaves messy and unhelpful markings all over your papers. No good.
I was an average english student, I sucked up to Johnson in an attempt to receive a better grade, it worked. She either gives her students A+'s(4 of them) and give the rest C-'s and F's. I was the acception with a B. Good luck - you will need it, if you arnt a strong english student drop the class.
I was really disappointed with this class. She is an awful teacher and should not be teaching. She picks her fave students in the beginning of the year and abandons the rest for remainder of the year. I highly recommend NOT taking her class, maybe she'll get the hint and leave...

I was a B student coming into her class from Highschool and i ended up with a B+ in her class, if you attend her class, give her the due respect she deserves, occasionaly participate in her discussions, let her know you care and seek help she will not give you a grade lower then a B unless you are esl or a lost case. TAKE HER. GIVE HER A CHANCE.
Very condescending and rude, even mean. Seems to pick favoties based on who knows what. I have seen her yell at many students in my class for things such as going to the washroom or for simply asking a question. She appears to have no paitence or respect for students. I am at a loss as to why she teaches at all. Being in her class is frustrating.

I have never failed an english class in my life, yet Im taking this class and I've been failing everything i hand in. I participate in all the discussions and even go to her optional classes so I can get more input from her, yet I still keep failing and it seems most people in my class are in the same position as me, exept her 1 favourite student.

She's a good teacher. Although she may be unclear as to what she expects from her students with respects to assignments and tests, if you go to her for help, you should do fine.
I learned what I came to learn in this class. I have a better understanding of English grammar, I can formulate my thoughts better, and I know what a college level essay should look like. Though her marking notes could be more readable, Mrs. Johnson made her expectations very clear from day 1. Participate, treat her with respect, and you'll do fine

Taking her class was a miserable experience. She goes out of her way to mock students. Mean. She shouldn't be teaching.
Not bitter or angry as others have said, but expects students to put something into the class! Expects you do the readings and attend. Do that, & you will do fine! Tests are fair &she preps you well for them. Class covered a wide variety of lit, something for all. Will answer questions if you ASK. Fair marker. Not particularily exciting, but nice!
I did get a good grade in this class, and not because I sucked-up.I went to most of my classes, read the material, worked on my papers, and participated. She was hard on the people who didn't- but why should they get an easy ride just by listening in on my efforts? She helpful in meeting outside class to work on class material, overall-pretty nice!
A hard marker, but overall is fair. She gives you what you earn. Attendance is very important, so make sure if you are away you talk to her and explain your reason for not being in her class. She is very helpful and it is a good idea to come to her office when you don't understand something.

This so-called instructor is the worst teacher ever. She is condesending, and dogmatically pointed out how I wasn't an "academic". She did harm, as after taking her course I doubted myself yet other professors responded to my papers with good marks. She commented on the spelling of her name and told everyone to "note" that. SHAME on u carol.
I feel that she doesn't care about teaching the students material. She is bored and acts annoyed all the time
A good teacher. However, in this class there is a film section. Understandably she taught out of the txtbk b/c she lacks any practical experience. When she did add her own thoughts on filmmaking they were at times inaccurate. Still learnt a lot about film, be aware though it may not be all correct.

I can understand why some people give her pretty low ratings mainly because she isn't the easiest marker and there's a fair bit of homework in the class. If you don't read the material then don't expect to do well, she does call on people if no one speaks up in class. Class discussions can be fun and you can tell she is a passionate instructor.
She is very condesending and lacks credible teaching skills. She seems to unconsciously want to put down her students to make herself feel better. She is not helpful, and discourages her students, and discriminates against her students. She is one dimensional and English can be pleasant so avoid her class as it is harmful, not helpful.
Took her class GIS. I found her initially a bit of a tough marker, but if you go to see her she is helpful. She does help you if you show that you are working hard and care about her class. You get out what you put in.
I read the material, I went to all the classes, I asked for extra help...and still DID NOT like her teaching methods nor did I do as well as I expected. She is confusing, scatter-brained, very hard to focus on and extremely hard marker for no apparent reason. She is unpleasent and hard to read. I would definitely not recommend her.
All I am going to say is just don't take her...there are plenty of other english teachers to choose from...

She was pretty clear and I didn't get something I asked her. Very helpfull. Marks pretty easy. Just write what she wants. Totally recommend her.
Soo boring. You read a story, then go over it for 2 hours. Her midterms are hard, and based on material that she doesnt cover in class. Her notes are very scattered, and I believe she has an obsession with circling things.. she also has pop quizzes, which are always fun! So attend class.. even though it will put you to sleep.
Boring lectures, isnt outgoing and seems really conservative in her movements and style. If you can think for youself and understand a story you should do pretty well. easy quizes, not much group work, and one hour out of the hour is optional so you can leave early. Not strict on attendance.
i really liked her. very helpful and personable when you asked. she is not interested in babysitting grownups.
worse instructor ever. dont believe me? read the other comments. attended every class, did all the assignments, asked questions in class and she'll still fail you regardless of your work, she skims over your work and gives you a flat mark.
This "teacher" is a teenage jerk trapped in a 60 year old's body. Who in the hell makes corrections using comments like "ARGH" and "grr" on term papers? Also, I consider it entirely unprofessional to include sarcasm and "well duh"s in your editing notes. Way to perpetuate the "I'm smart, you're dumb" standard of an **** teacher.
She's an okay teacher. She isn't the nicest person but it seems like she does enjoy what she teaches. Just show up to her classes and do the homework/readings and you should do fine.

Horrible, horrible teacher. This isn't out of spite, I'm doing fine in the course, I just know when I'm learning and when I'm not. The final report for the class wasn't covered at all. She simply gives out a handout and expects you to figure it out, and I attended all the classes regardless of them being optional. Plus she was really rude.

This is a boring teacher. The class feels disconnected. Sometimes during lectures, she would slowly begin talking more quietly to the point where it seems like she talking to herself. Also, she is quite a strict marker. She is a messy marker. She critizes pretty badly--not very much consideration about feelings.
Just because she has all her degrees, it does not make her a good teacher. Very rude and tends to favor students. Heard from other students that she is an unfair marker and (possibly) discriminates against you for attendance, english fluency, and ethnicity. Overall, her classes felt impersonal.
Like people have said before she is very rude. Very critical and biased. My way or the highway attitude and mumbles incoherently. Way over her head and does not deserve to criticize essays as so (marks according to her preference rather than the essay's content/topic)
I found Carell to be a terrible instructor. She starts all of her trains of thought clear and concise then trails off and mumbles. This of course lead to a inability to understand exactly what she is talking about, however, when asked she only refuses to repeat herself. She is also very rude, does not fully listen to the questions being asked of
I enjoyed having class with her! She can be a little rude, but she does have a sense of humor. Very easy to get a good grade in her CMNS 1118 class. You just need to get in her good side and laugh at her jokes! She will remember that when she is marking. She almost never takes attendance :)
Terrible teacher, unclear when giving instructions. Take someone else for communications. Has spelling mistakes in her handouts and online instructions, yet criticizes you severely when you do the same. Overall just unclear in what she wants you to do.
I'm surprised she has gotten so much negative feedback, I find her to be a good instructor. She tells you exactly what is expected of you, gives fair assignments and plenty of time to complete them, and even gives you full credit for online assignments just for doing them. Follow assignment instructions and read the textbook and you'll do well.

Excellent professor without a doubt. Assignments are relevant to course topics and extremely helpful for future courses. I see no reason for all of the negative comments. I would definitely enroll in another course with this prof.
The online class Material is pretty much self taught. Weekly online quiz, and 4 big assignments and a midterm. She doesn' really provide much group feed back. very strict in marking. If one area is bad she deducts marks heavily. ie. structure, format, content, are great. But grammar issues then she will may give u a barely passing or failing grade.
