You wont find a more compassionate professor at JMU
really good professor, very fair, good explainations
quirky, good sense of humor, likes to teach, good class
I didn't like him very much
horrible, annoying, and harder than all other 204 teachers
He is all that is man. Mm Mm good.
Pretty easy class...Just make sure to go to class and take the quizzes
Easy class, take the quizzes, do the tutorials and your basically set.
Great guy..read the book and go to class and you;ll be set
need to go to class moderate course load
compared to carrier, take carrier....looks like stuart from mad tv..HahAHHA
take your book to class highlight/study night before/get your B/very fair
he personifies everything that is beautiful in the world
nice guy, fair class, moderate work, put in the effort - your set

Hate the class...extremely BORING and unclear!

WORST PROFESSOR EVERRRRRRRRR!!!!!!!!!
easy class... easy to get a good grade... quizes and tutorials piece of cake
If you really love computers this guy is just right for you.
Hated every minute of it!!!
A good professor but a boring subject. Very helpful.
he likes computers and karate and wears shirts that are too big for him.
Not too hard...class is VERY stupid and boring...watch some movies
Great guy, but lots of work. (Says urinary instead of unary ....ewww).
fair amount of work in this class, but he is extremely helpful and understanding
Hard enough class...boring teacher..not a good combination!
This guy is wound up way too tight! Fairly easy class though.
AWFUL PROFESSOR FOR JAVA!!! Very unclear and extremely unfair tests!
Horrible JAVA teacher, does not teach anything, did not learn anything from the class. All lectures straight from book, programs/labs are impossible and unfair, tests are inconsistent, very hard, and very unfair. DO NOT RECCOMEND
people don't like him much...i think he's a good prof. don't tune him out, give him a chance, go to office hrs and you'll be fine.
Doesn't know Java. Better learn it on your own time. Labs start out easy, then take more than 10 hours to complete.
Two words...BORING & Rude!!
Very helpful with lecture material and labs. Tests are fair, labs weren't too bad. Most stuff for it you can get from the text.
Not helpful. Gives unfair tests. Ask him a question he will tell to read the book. Doesn't explain stuff well.
Yo, its JAVA...it's gonna be hard whoever you have. You will do bad in this class if you dont start your labs early and dont ask for help outside of class. Cole is a nice guy, he wants you to understand. Tests are killer, but its a programming class.
He is extremely helpful if you go to him during his office hours. He is always willing to stay late. Explains things in greater detail if you ask. Great for Database.
If you study for the tests and do your access tutorials you will do fine. He lets you know pretty much what will be on the test and gives quizzes and classwork assignments to help your grade. Randomly watches movies to kill time. Overall good class.
If you want an A in COB 204, take Cole's class. I had this class at 9am and got out on average at around 9:30. The in class assigments are ridiculusly easy, hes extremely thorough with the information and if you need help he's available. Take Coles class.
Cole is a really good teacher. He comes across a little jerk-ish at first, but if you make an effort in the class and pay attention he is so awesome.
So up and get a B. It's that plain and simple. He is a good teacher, just pay attention. Read the book too, i didnt thats why i got a B.
Make it your goal in the course to get him back for all the times he screws you over(and there are plenty) and you will do well in the class...........GET ROCKED CAREY
did anyone else notice he looks and talks like that guy from mad tv. stewart? hilarious
easy easy easy...just go to class, get the notes offline, and do your tutorials and this class is def an easy A!
Great teacher, very fair, follow every one of his directions and exceed his project expectations and you will do fine. Ohh and bring all your text books for his class to the first day of class...
He really knows his stuff; a little hard to follow sometimes (especially ch.6) but take good notes and read the book and you'll do just fine! Don't be afraid to ask for help b/c he is willing to work around you to help you!
Fun class, didnt know anything about it going into it. very helpful when seen during office hours. work sometimes tedious. weird guy sometimes, but knows topic and doesnt teach out of the book
This guy is weird. He actually refused to answer my question before a test because he said I need to consult another class member...isn't that what the teacher is paid for? A bit of a dumb-ass if you ask me but easy A.
Class is fine if you show up and do the work he tells you to do. Tells you everything that will be on the test the class before and is very willing to help. Nice guy too.
Nice Guy. Hard to listen to at times, lectures are long and boring. Tests are not too bad, he tells you everything on them before he gives them. Watch out for his videos!!
I really like Coles class. He shows movies throughout the year and quizes and tests are pretty easy. Dont really need to read the book, gives you the questions before the test. Nice guy and very helpful. Take him!!!
cole is very willing to help. start your project early and go ask tons of questions...thats the only way to learn this and do well. you have to kinda learn code on your own...thats just how it is
carey's awesome! go to class and the test reviews and you'll do fine. lectures can be dry, but he loves people who participate. lots of easy quizzes and projects. tests can be tough but he's willing to give extra points if you go to class and participate. he wants you to do well. he's a great prof!
He's a nice man. I would recommend him. Computers are not my thing so this class is kind of hard for me. Just come to class, because there are quizes sometimes, and do your tutorials, and study some, and you'll be fine.
Nice guy...Shitty prof. Don't take hime for 430. Very hard...unlike in 204. ****bag.
Very confusing, blows through lecture notes in class, doesn't really teach material. Very anal when it comes to grading, don't know what his deal is half the time.
Lets you out at least 15 min early for every lecture. Have to go to class to pass the class. Grades on projects are extremely harsh. Not a good teacher but tries hard at least.
I don't agree with the last few Ratings. This class IS hard, but if you ATTEND class you will do fine. Exams can be harsh but not impossible. the TWO Projects are very diffcult. He's a great professor and knows what he is teaching.Class Avergage was a 81 for final grade. So half the class got B's.
Harder then the other professors. His tests are very hard and he prides himself in having a second exam with an average of a 70. Nice guy, very quirky, but if you're not interested in this material take someone easier. He is helpful, but grades much harder than other teachers.
Really nice guy, if you study you can definitly get an A. Tutorials and projects are easy but sometimes time consuming. Test are semi-hard but not too bad.
OMG I loved this guy! He will help you whenever you need the help and he really wants you to do well! Helps you know what to study for tests and quizzes. Just go to class and you will do fine! Loves his students, and will know everyone by name! TAKE HIM!!
Professor Cole is GREAT! He really cares about his students and makes such an effort to help that out whenever needed. He really made me enjoy this class and has even made me change my major!!!
take his class. awesome guy, gets to know his students personally, and a somewhat easy workload. he likes what he does, and you can tell. in class quizzes boost the grade, and he helps out a lot in preparing for the 3 tests. TAKE HIM!
Easy professor. Boring as can be.
not a hard class if you keep up with the work it is an easy B. he is a pretty big ****bag, so just go to class and let all the gay serious stuff he says go over your head. probably the goofiest looking dude in harrisonburg
Cole may look like Stewart from MadTV, but he's a nice guy who helps you whenever you need it. Take Mitri if possible for CIS484 because his capstone project is WAY easier, but for database or 204, this man will actually teach you something and help you if you're not getting it. Great prof.
Cole is awesome. He is probably one of the harder teachers for this class, but he is hilarious and he gets to know all his students. Crams a ton of material into each class and also shows how the information applies to real-life examples. I'll definitely take him again.
Cole is awesome... my favorite teacher this year.
Cole is the man. Very helpful and has a great passion for the material, dry as it may be. Always willing to have a laugh or two. Incorporates movies and other activities into the material to make it more interesting. Good man, Good Prof
cole knows what he is talking about...but this class is boring as anything. tons of busy work..tests are okay, not too bad of a teacher.
Cole is the man. He is friendly, helpful and keeps class short and interesting. Only real problem is that he isn't flexible with deadlines and if you miss a quiz you're basically screwed.
Needs to comb his hair. Knows the subject but has no idea what teaching is. All busywork. Hopefully you have no emergencies or no one dies in your family because you'll get zeroes. Does not take late work.
class is a breeze. I went maybe once a week and got a A-. The only thing that pissed me off was he would reward people for coming to class sometimes. If i went to most of the classes, i probably could have gotten an A. tests and subject material is very easy if you know anything about computers. Access and Frontpage stuff is really boring
Summarization: take the "Your company's Computer Guy" skit with Jimmy Fallon from Saturday Night Live, and then let him teach this class--and that's Cole. (ARROGANT!)
What to say about Carey Cole, there are not enough words to explain this guy. So much busy work, go to class, read the chapter, and do tutorials. Tests are ok, not great. I did terrible on a test but lots of other things brought my grade up. I hate computers but if you know stuff about computers and that interests u then this class will be cake.
Cole has gotten better over the semester with the jerk comments and such. Tests are manageable if you study and take notes; there's a lot of material and terms. The busy work he gives is pretty much standard in all COB 204's (Access/Frontpage tutorials, etc.). He relates the material well to real-world situations. Easy B+ and up.
TAKE SOMEONE ELSE FOR THIS CLASS. WHATEVER YOU DO, TAKE SOMEONE ELSE. BUSY WORK, TESTS ARE HARD, THE PROJECTS ARE A WASTE OF TIME. Everyone else I have talked to about this class said it was one of the easiest classes they took. All had someone else. The class is not mandatory if you want to fail; if you want to pass, class is mandatory.
Cole definitely makes the class much harder than it should be. Quizzes are extremely hard and you have one just about every class. Tests are pretty fair, but they are difficult. Access and Frontpage tutorials are easy, but the projects are difficult. He is a very quirky guy with a lot of weird rules. I would definitely advise one not to take him.
Web design is pretty simple and Cole gives you most of the information you need. Hes very understanding and a pretty funny guy. Really laid back and lets you out early all the time. Definitely recommended.
Carey Cole is to Computer Information Sytems as Franz Boas is to anthropology. He is an utter master of all things Java, PHP, and HTML, and a great lecturer to boot. I believe Carey Cole embodies what so many of us want in life - a passion for your work, an exuberance that seems to know no bounds, and a constant smile and amicable nature.
tests are hard, so study and ask questions in class/exam review. do your tutorials (which are really easy) b/c it'll save your grade. lectures aren't bad, but try to participate so you can leave early. he lets class out pretty early. i have him TuTh & get out 20 mins early.
Cole is awesome and hilarious.
I don't know how he got such a good rating because I thought this class was miserable because of Coles unfair teaching. He swamped us with pointless assignments and constantly had an air of arrogance as if his class were the only one that we were enrolled in. Take a DIFFERENT professor unless you want to be miserable all semester!!!
Nice guy....this is definitly his passion...give alot of useless assignments answering questions in the book....tries to prevent info in different ways like showing movie clips....tests are pretty hard but this wasnt a good subject for me...overall its decent
Strange class. Doesn't really teach you much at all, you just learn as you go. Incredibly easy (if you understand the material), but probably challenging if you aren't familiar with HTML, JavaScript, PHP, and SQL.
The class wasn't that bad. You have to do a lot of work outside of class and the tests are pretty hard but Cole gives you a lot of chances to bring it up with movie quizzes, random extra credit points, and easy in class assignments. He is always willing to help though. Really nice guy.
Good professor. A little odd (wait til he shows you his nunchuck video), but keeps the class pretty light and not boring. You get some pretty easy quizzes and assignments to boost your grade, and the tests aren't that bad either.
I had him for a hybrid section of 204, and was really lost at first. He gave a ton of assignments and I never knew when they were due, but he got better about it and by the end of the semester I really got the hang of the material. Class is a lot of work but totally possible to get a B.
I have mixed feelings about this class. Tests are hard, but the mini assignments and tutorials are easy and definately help boost the grade. Group assignment at end is pointless, individual create your own webpage and database projects are annoying but in the end, you learn a lot, is sometimes confusing. The tests are the biggest worry. study!!!!!
He is not a bad teacher but there is a ton of work. Be prepared to do tons of busy work. The tests are alright as long as you study. The online sessions are annoying, and he gets mad when you cant attend (even though they are at random times and you may have class). Go to class and study- easy b
oh boy. Good ol' Carey Cole. This man is a nice guy, but unfortunately i was part of a hybrid (1/2 online 1/2 classtime) class, and i believe this was his first time teaching a hybrid..result... Not good. If you have him for a regular class, you'll be alright. Lot of work, but whaddyagonnado. Overall, not a bad professor, just a little, different.
He's a bit odd and boring, and acts like it's the most important class ever. Other than that, there's busy work that's annoying but can help boost your grade. Just study and do the tutorials and assignments and you'll be fine. This class as a whole is pretty dull as a business major anyway, so just put up with it - easy A or B.
ugh completely ridiculously boring. he is a jerk and unwilling to help or explain anything further. acts like we want to take the class when it is required. it is too hard when it is supposed to be one of the easier COB classes. I dont recommend this guy to anyone.
nice guy, I LOVE the one in class and one online class part of the course, that means you only GO to class once a week, did somewhat bad on all his tests but he does give alot of work ( I do mean ALOT)I currently have a b+, the only annoying thing is studying for his tests which are VERY hard to do the night before, ALOT of material to study for
not a bad class..but you will stay at his office during office hours for help with projects unless you are already a computer person..not hard, just do all the projects and assignments and a B is possible,if you study really hard an A is possible...tests are not hard and are fair since they are on everything that we cover, but we cover alot
Carey Cole is amazing!! I loved his class and it really made me interested in CIS even though I had 0 interest in it before. I had the bybrid class and absolutely loved it. lots of assignments which are easy and grade boosters. TESTS ARE HARD though so make sure to study!! a B is easy to get, and A is crazy hard to get. WOULD RECCOMEND!! so helpful
If you do the homework on time and projects right. There 50% of your grade that should be in the 90's. The other 50% are pretty difficult tests. Study hard and go into his office hours, he is very helpful on how to do well on the tests. Good guy, loves what he teaches and plays with numchucks in his free time.
I had Cole for an online summer class and he was great, very helpful and understanding. As long as you actually do all of the work that is assigned and study for the tests, it's easy to get a good grade in his class.
Hes a good teacher but Hard class. Have to do the homework and projects but they are huge grade boosts. Tests are kinda hard. Do what he says and you'll be fine.
Professor Cole is a great teacher. I learned alot in his class and he really seems to enjoy his job. Do all the homework and study for the tests (they are fair). Also participate in the online sessions>>> he sometimes made those who didn't, do extra homework. Do extra credit/homework, go to class, gauranteed A.
great guy. knows what he is teaching and obviously enjoys it. has a great time teaching. he does ask questions every day and if you get it wrong you get a zero for the day, if you get it right you get a 1. a little annoying but can help your grade. tests are manageable. DB projects are not too hard. good choice.
COB204 with Prof. Cole was awesome. You might feel a little uneasy at first with his teaching method, but you'll learn that it's quite helpful to keep you up to schedule. Posts PP of chapter after going through them, they're basically what you need to get at least a B on his tests. Final was a breeze, the nunchuk video was lengendary, take him!
Great professor! His class was very interesting. You have to read the textbook prior to class. He's funny and he knows really well what he talks about. Also, very helpful; ask questions in class, go to his office during office hours. I really enjoyed his class. I would highly recommend his class
His sarcasm can come off as him being a jerk. Assignments requirements are changed verbally in class. Minimal teaching in class, you basically need to learn it all in the book. If you aren't already familiar with HTML, CSS, PHP and JavaScript this class is A LOT of work, if you are familar, still lots of work. I'd stay away, teach yourself.
Class is inappropriately named Web Design. It's all coding and poorly/barely taught at that. Final projects assigned were more design than coding...not a well thought out class. Save yourself some headaches, time and money and teach yourself. One of the worst classes and teachers I've had. Look into GRPH 312 or CS 347 instead.
This class is extremely hard and sooo boring. He will call you out unexpectedly so be prepared to answer some tough questions. If he wasn't such a tool, this class would a lil better..emphasis on "lil" he's like an unfunny, un-nice version of Michael McDonald (guy that plays Stuart on MadTv)Take a different teacher if you can you wont regret it.
Do not take this professor if you are a sophomore taking 291 and 242. The class is really hard to keep up with if you have an already tough course load. There is a lot of busy work due at random times and overall the class is just a pain. The tests aren't as easy as they should be for this class also. Take another professor.
I WOULD RECOMMEND THIS CLASS. Honestly, besides the tests, everything is just EASY GRADE. There are assignments like Access and Sharepoint, which is REALLY EASY. Quizzes are not extremely hard and participation is free point if you just answer when you're called on. I never read the book and only study the powerpoint notes and I get B's on the test
He is a good teacher,, You just have to DO YOUR WORK
Overall, he was a decent professor. The class is obnoxious if you're not interested. Had a hard time determining what was due each class. Wasted a lot of time on youtube watching videos about CIS stuff. However, found a love for twitter.
The guy is the head of the CIS department and is the biggest nerd ever. He will call u out during class and if you do not know the answer, then u get a zero for the day. The tests are manageable, but hard and the sharepoint and access tutorials are boring... get young chio or davis for a cob teacher because it is not an easy A or B.....
If you want to learn something, take him. But this class isn't an easy A
His tests are hard and you have no idea what to study. He acts like his class is the only thing you have going on. He expects you to care about his twitter and basically wants you to chech blackboard everyday. He is not a bad teacher and the class isn't bad but it is by no means an easy A.
A good teacher overall. Yes you definitely have to do your work but I can say that this was a class I probably learnt the most in. He wants you to do well, and there are many extra credit opportunities. He's very helpful if you go to him. If u plan on slacking off then don't take the class. If ur ready to put some effort, then I would recommend it!
He tries, but the class is boring so you have to teach yourself. His tests are tough, but he tells you what to study so you can get B's and A's on them. Attendance is mandatory and you get called on (it's in alpha order). There are 1000 points and the only hard grades are the three tests. Lots of EC and easy assignments. Cole is kinda quirky
Classwork/homework/projects easy A. Tests are a bit challenging did not study for any though. Managed to pull a 87. If you study and take notes you should be fine.
Good guy, lots of work but not incredibly difficult. I'm not extremely tech savvy but I didn't find the class too difficult. He tries to make it easy to understand and his tests aren't too bad. I got an A, but it was the highest workload class for my semester. I've heard there are better 204 professors, but Cole's not bad at all.
Comes across as a pompous jerk with an inadequate sense of humor. But as a prof, he helps somewhat so long as you see him during office hours. The classes are pretty much slides reiterating the chapter previously assigned. Be prepared to get called on. He's okay, see other choices though.
awful class. incredibly boring and it will be your highest workload of the semester. 2 hours of homework a week minimum and tests cover 4 extremely long chapters at a time. try to get laura atkins or jeffery may instead of this dumb- ass
Very funny teacher, very sarcastic when it comes to class clowns or questions of no sense. 3 exams and a final, really have to study the material which is mostly in the book, reason why his average on exams you need is a 60. Alot of computer work of course, uses discussion board more than any other class. Sharepoints big portion of grade.Recommend!
DO NOT TAKE. Unless you are interested in having to search for due dates, assignments, and information all on your own in several different places, do not take! He puts people on the spot every class, hides assignments, and never reminds you of anything
He's really good, take him. Just read the assignments and follow blacboard and youll be fine. He does extra credit every week just pay attention.
Prof. Cole always knew what he talked about, but the class isn't really interesting..some of the stuff he does is very high school with lots of little pointless assignments and required participation, but overall not too bad. His tests get very specific and you need to study a lot to do well.
Cole is obviously passionate about what he teaches, however for most people this is not the most interesting course. Its a requirement for business majors and should be seen as just that. The work load is extremely heavy! You must read the textbook before every class b/c he'll ask questions about it in class and if you get it wrong you lose points
This is the most useful class i have taken so far. Cole is extremely knowledgable and is always quick to answer your questions. Its almost required that you read a chapter before every other class because he calls on people and asks specific questions which determine a small part of your grade. Work is straightforward and kind of fun. Take him
The class material is not hard (it's mostly common sense), but he makes it as confusing as possible. He doesn't provide you with all the dates you need until they're practically the next day and there are sharepoint assignments plus many others due every single day for weeks. He thinks that his class is the only class in your schedule
Professor Cole is awesome. Yes there are lots of little assignments but they really help you prepare for the tests and they don't take too much time. He offers lots of ec opportunities and there's a bunch of grades instead of three test grades. He's more than willing to help, nicest guy! His hybrid class is the best
Cole is a very good professor and obviously likes what he's doing, but there are a lot of assignments! He definitely forgets that we have other classes, too. He constantly shows up late to office hours, but is more than willing to help once he is there. Do the work, read the chapters, keep up with assignements and it's not bad at all.
Worth it. Take him.
Great professor, smart guy with lot of useful advice. He's very realistic and honest about what u need to know and what u dont. My favorite class that semester.
Atrocious. Jmu's CIS program got ranked 9th in the U.S so he jacked up the ciriculum. Lab's are impossible and tests are even worse. Oh and he calls on every student to write framestacks on the board daily.
Difficult class, but you'll learn a lot about programming if you try. CIS capstone where you use C#, ASP.NET and SQL Server. If you take this with 454, say good-bye to your free time. 4 labs, 4 in-class quizzes (coding) and a final project. The project at the end is hell if you don't start early or you don't have a genius programmer in your group.
I really enjoyed Professor Cole's class. I had no interest in the beginning regarding CIS but he makes it interesting and easy to learn. Access is tedious, but that would come along with any CIS professor. Prof Cole makes learning actually bearable and is not anywhere as difficult as some claim. I'd take another class of Cole's any day.
Most students will tell you Professor Cole is the hardest 204 professor. His class it totally manageable and if you take the time to prepare, you can get an A. Also, go to class it will pay off in the end. He offers opportunities for extra credit, and always does a great job at explaining everything. He is by far the best professor I have had.
Take him. He assigns a lot of work but it is doable. If you have questions, go to his office hours and he is always willing to help and will even come to the lab to help you with online assignments. Such a great professor. Tests are not that bad either as long as you study
Very good professor in regards to teaching the material in a clear manner. However, be prepared to put in a good amount of work to be successful. He does things his way and doesn't round grades. Take him if you're willing to put the time in and want to learn. B is pretty manageable w/ not too much work. A if you put in a good amount.
Very smart and gives great advices. Don't skip class, listen to him and study hard.
Professor Cole is a great professor. Put in some work, study, read and this class will be a breeze. Homework is reading and access projects, which are doable. Tests are OK, just study! When he offers extra credit, do them! Will help your grade in the long run. Participation matters. Pretty helpful and reasonable. Most likely would take him again :)
Professor Cole is not bad to take. He comes off a little harsh, but his course has lots of quizzes and tests. Also most of the time there is extra credit on the tests usually a letter grade's worth. There is also the access tutorials and a database project at the end. He really like group presentations and assignments like share point.
Cole really cares about his students and I can tell that he honestly does want everyone to come out of 484 better than they came in. He was very lenient with projects and homeworks by letting us turn everything in late and make corrections to get points back. If you fall behind stop by his office hours and he will may let you do extra credit!
Tends to fly through powerpoints in ten minutes Tries to make class interesting, but honestly, most of what you do in class isn't on the test Read the book! Before class Do your projects on time. Show up to class Easy A if you try
Dr. Cole is very wise and knowledgeable. Really found to respect this guy. Tests rely a lot on info from the textbook and your Access course pack. Access project is based of the tutorials, so do them! He does graded participation, but may or may not call on you each class. Take good notes from the textbook chapters b/c students who do poorly don't!
Either doesn't bother to explain what he wants or does it extremely poorly. Has his own ideas of how code should be written (that are often unnecessary or even bad practice) and will mark you off for not following them, having never told you what they are. The material itself is actually not that hard but reading his mind is.
Makes the class way harder than necessary. Simple information made more complicated. Take COB204 with a different professor!
A lot of reading. He will call out random students to answer his questions about the text book readings. Access can also be challenging if you do not follow all of the steps. Can be sarcastic and sometimes condescending.
ohhhh carey he just expects you to learn everything on your own, is the hardest out of all cob204 teachers. He is not approachable at all and doses not care about anyone doing well in his class. Likes to give quizes only on Fridays and test the day after halloween just to be mean!
COB204 is supposed to be an easy intro class. Professor Cole makes this class so unnecessarily hard. His tests are hard, the class average is always so low! Must do every reading because he randomly calls on people all class, he loves to put people on the spot. NEVER TAKE
Hes a decent teacher. As long as you put in effort, youll have no trouble. A lot of people dont like him, but I feel like as long as you try its not that bad. Theres a lot of grades, which helps if you bomb an assignment here or there. He provides a lot of opportunities for extra credit and tells you exactly what to expect on exams.
If you read, take good notes, and listen, you should be fine. That being said, he makes an easy cob prerequisite much harder than it needs to be. He's pretty boring, but is always available to make sure you can at least kindof understand it. Access is challenging but the book walks you right through it. Always says what's to be expected on tests.
The individual part is pretty straightforward. Review what he says will be on quizzes and the final. The final's pretty free and quizzes are decent. Labs take a while to do. He says not to worry about front end design but you will will will need to know front end to make your final project look good. So use javascript on the labs.
The class is designed to replicate an actual client and Cole does it very well as he has little CIS knowledge, isn't clear on expectations in or outside of class, provides little to no helpful resources, and isn't respectful towards students. Well done.
November 2018 Update: The hardest class I've taken in a while. His class consists of readings, heavy tests, and boring lectures. He expects you to know so much. He loves calling you out and making you feel stupid. Plz try and find someone else before you pick him
Hands down the worst CIS experience I've had at JMU. Cole barely teaches in the class and his common answer to questions is "Figure it out." Only real leg up you can get is by kissing his butt during his study abroad prior to taking 484. His instructions are always inconsistent and grades poor. He has single handedly made me question choosing CIS.
Very funny guy, but pretty hard on students. He brings the best out of his students however. Class is very straight forward in terms of grades and assignments. In order to succeed you MUST complete all of the readings. lots of memorization and interesting concepts, definitely a COB prereq that's a GPA booster. I'd take him again, and recommend.
Two things about Carey Cole. His 204 class isnt really difficult, Id scarcely paid attention, barely wrote any notes, almost never read. Its just memorizing vocab. Carey Cole the person though is an obnoxious jerk who puts so many unnecessary hurdles to this class. Worst professor Ive had here, and an even more unpleasant person.
Cole has sprouted from the underworld to reign terror upon CIS students. I have never had a professor that posts the final rubric after we submit the assignment and takes off points for stuff he never said he required. He has the easiest job as a teacher considering his whole philosophy is to not teach you at all. Have fun "figuring it out"!
As long as you go to class, you will be fine. His tests are hard but he has so many other grades that help outway them.
Professor Cole wants you to do good! Tests are not that hard as long as you make sure you understand the things he said that will be on the test. He also gives a lot of good feedbacks if you take the initiative to ask questions in class or in his office hours. Labs are sometimes confusing but it's like that on purpose because he wants your to ask!
Not a bad professor, but not a great prof for 330. He was moody. Would go from asking us how our weekend was to criticizing us when asking questions about the homework. He's super strict when it comes to timeliness so be on time. He was no help when we "learned" SQL so we had to teach ourselves. Exams were not bad at all and he gives partial credit
This guy is careless. All he tells students when they need help is "figure it out," or "read the directions." He does not demonstrate what needs to be done and is not a helping hand what so ever. Hands down worst professor at JMU, this guy is a heartless jerk
He will always answer questions if you need them.
Carey cole isnt that bad. Very wise guy and will help you if you go to his office hours. You will have to put in effort in order to do well. He'll mention what is going to be on the test in the lectures and will sometimes throw pop quizzes at the end of lectures.
This guy STINKS! He provides no instructions on our AWS assignment, forcing me to get multiple 0's on assignments. Pop quizzes either at the beginning or end of class, always annoying. His exams are very tough, so I recommend staying away.
Professor Cole was an okay teacher. Doing the homework helps boost your grade. The tests are hard and that was with me studying. I will say I never read the book so that may help with the studying process. He is always willing to help during office hours, but usually will only answer questions there. Homework is usually easy.
Condescending and wastes most of your time with guest speakers that have absolutely nothing to do with the class.
This professor is horrible. Pop up quizzes available for 5 min during class, on things about guestspeakers. Tests are extremely hard even with studying. Does not explain hw, therefore got 0/10 on multiple AWS hw assignments.
Professor Cole gives a lot of pop quizzes however if you do pay attention in class they are extremely easy. He also gives lots of extra credit opportunities that are added onto exams. If you are struggling with an assignment he will always help you.
Prof. Cole is a good professor. He invites guest speakers every week and you will have popquizzes regarding what the speakers talked ab so pay attention. The assignments can get a little challenging if you have a Mac but not impossible. He is pretty strict but he offers help during his office hours and he's super helpful. Nice guy but expects alot.
Very dry lectures. He brings in guest speakers all semester instead of exactly teaching. If you dont take notes on them youre in trouble for the quizzes about them. Lectures are not engaging at all.
Just save yourself the unnecessary stress, and stayyyy away from him. Take any other professor but him. I always went to class and paid attention, but he is just a very tough teacher. Not sure how he has any good reviews.
very hard tests, make sure to read the textbook and write good notes. he covers important material in class, but doesn't deep-dive into it. accessible outside of class, and tries to help if you need anything.
If you aren't a CIS major, take a different professor. This class revolved around guest speakers of those that entered the CIS profession. We were given little to no in class instruction of the assignments he wanted us to do and tests were ridiculously hard.
Class is extremely challenging but if you put in the work, you can do it. I started off with a really bad grade on first exam and then studied A LOT and did well. READ THE TEXTBOOK. Go to office hours, ask questions, and never turn anything in late or in the wrong format. 7.5/10
This class was really awful and the professor wasn't very nice. He expects you to just know how to do things.
Professor Cole is awesome. He's tough, but you'll learn a lot from his class. If you ever have the opportunity to go abroad with him, absolutely do it.
Very good professor, actually wants his students to learn. All the exams/quizzes were open note & he gives extra credit just for saying in class and working on homework. He seems scary at first, like a drill Sargent, but it's just an act so people don't just spend class shopping or playing games. If you study, you can get a decent grade.
Professor Cole has a tough teaching style, but if you engage with the material, you'll learn a lot. unstuck ai was super helpful for studying alongside the course textbook. Attend class, do the homework, and you can get a solid grade.
Does not have the best personality at times and can be demeaning to students at times. He knows what he is talking about, but could be better on how he treats the teaching environment around students.
This professor is THE MAN. Easy dubs in this class. Course material is quite easy and I'm not even a CIS major. Final was hard but everything else is manageable. I will never understand how people say this class is hard.
I'm not sure what good this review will do since (supposedly) he is retiring soon, but for a class that is as challenging as 330, he is the right guy to take it for. It takes a lot of effort both inside and outside of the classroom but I feel like his feedback has been a big reason for my success (so far) in this class.
Dudes pretty annoying and demeaning towards his students. He's not bad at teaching, he's also just not great. Makes assignments significantly harder than they need to be and doesn't give you any feedback, so you can't improve. He makes mistakes all the time in his instructions and is constantly having to change them becauseofmistakes students find.
