One of the greatest teachers you will have if you take his course. A true teacher and a true inspiration.
If you've never done or seen programming don't take CS1B, take 1A or learn it yourself, it's pretty easy. Other than that Carl Argila is hands down the best professor I have ever had. Extremely fair when it comes to grading and works hard to make sure his students do well. I'm actually sad that the class ended so quickly. It was absolutely amazing.
Great Teacher. Was very clear in the way he teaches. Very engaging. I actually learned something this semester. He also will spend time with you to review all your work before turning it in. Very fair with grading. This was a great class
I enjoyed this class a lot. He is a very caring teacher, and is willing to spend time helping you and getting to know you. Not many teachers actually care about their students, so it was refreshing. Just don't take the class unless you have some basic knowledge of computer programming beforehand, otherwise you might have trouble.
Take this class if you already have programming experience and you are a geek. In general college is not a good place to learn real programming... they just train you to work for a company and does not care about real computer science. but all these said ... THIS TEACHER ROCKS!!!! He cares about his students and he loves teaching.
Carl is one of the best teachers I have had in my life. He is dedicated to the job and puts a lot of effort into making sure his students are engaged in the learning process. I love his flip lectures - they make class time more productive because we aren't just listening to him lecture. Instead as a group we are discussing the topic.
Wow. Just wow. I've taken A LOT classes at Saddleback; which means I've gotten to know A LOT of different instructors there... CARL ARGILA BLOWS THEM ALL AWAY. Take his class, you won't regret it.
Great professor, actually cares about his students.
One of the worst professors I've ever had! Carl cares about his students but doesn't teach.
This is really an online class. Be prepared. Carl is a great guy, but puts everything online and doesn't cover what we need to know to complete the assignments in class. Then expects us to know it all for the final.
I loved the online lectures. Didn't have to cover boring stuff in class. Assignments are way too hard though.
Nice guy, but you LEARN nothing unless you are willing to figure it out yourself.
All quizzes are ENTIRELY from the book. He lectures beyond the material - what you need to know for your grade comes from the book. The lab stuff is on your own time - the books walk you through everything. If you have no prior Excel or Access experience, there's lab people to help. This class is useful for people who aren't familiar with computers
Great teacher. Easy class if you attend. His lectures are very interesting and he is very knowledgeable. I loved the class.
Professor Argila has incomparable knowledge of computers. Every class he spends an exceptional amount of time providing students with the information that is needed to succeed. There is a tremendous amount of textbook reading that is involved in this class. However, you will find this class is the best of all the computer information classes.
He is the best instructor I've had:) class is fun:) basically Go to class! The quizzes come straight from the book and do your weekly projects! +A :) if you have perfect attendance you won't need to take the final which is also not hard at all! I totaly recommend taking his class:)
Loved this class. Already working in IT made most of the book's content rather boring, but every lecture he talked about how the chapter relates with current technology trends. If you want to pass, read the book and do the assignments. You want to learn tech news on top of it all? Then really do pay attention during lecture time.
What am I going to do with my Tuesday nights? I suppose I should just read a book or watch TV or something, but the truth is...I actually looked forward to Professor Argila's CS class. I have never seen an instructor put forth so much effort into teaching. I'm very happy that I took his class.
very good
Personally had a good experience in this class, be ready for the EXCEL and ACCESS project
Great guy and is a bastion of knowledge when it comes to computers and technology. Probably one of the sweetest professors at the school. You will need the textbook for assignments and for the quizzesfinal.
Great teacher who genuinely cares about his students. Makes the lectures interesting by discussing current and future technologies. An overall wonderful person. Would definitely take again.
His commitment is self-explaining. His knowledge is more than anyone can offer in his field. His fairness and honesty are the tools that makes him up, as a person and a teacher. Thank you for giving me the honor to be one of your students. Your are the chili in technology. You are the teacher people need to have! Your are the person.. Recommended!
Be ready to work a lot in this class with Carl. You put in lab hours but if you do it in his labs after class he gives you extra credit. Also be there for every class because you wont have to take the final. Overall this class isn't that hard as long as you understand the excel an access projects and read the book.
WORST TEACHER IVE EVER HAD. I am not one to write bad reviews but his class is a joke. He does not know how to do the projects, he basically has the class teach him. He wastes time and talks about things that are not important. Avoid taking him at all costs
He bases your grade on "Attendance/Participation," "Quizzes," "Homework," and "Tests." You are assigned homework due two weeks later and you get extra credit for doing it in the tutoring center. As long as you show up, do the (pretty easy) homework, you'll be able to do well on the tests. A pretty easy "A"
If you're absent 3 days, you will be dropped. If you have perfect attendance, you don't have to take the final. Every day in class you turn in a Class Feedback Form for participation points. Really simple to pass the class. Every week you will have one Excel/Access Project due and one 30 question Quiz. He provides study guides. He is hilarious! LOL
Professor Argila is definitely an ordinary professor, he is different which makes him so great. So glad I took his class, I've learned so much and I though I was computer literate. If you don't want to take a final then show up to every class. Midterm and Final you must try on because it is not as easy if you don't understand the Excel or Access.
This is by far the best class that I have taken at Saddleback College. Professor Argila is a teacher with so much experience that I cannot believe that he is teaching at the junior college level. Who better to teach a class on modern technology, than a septuagenarian computer nerd who has never left the industry.
Professor Argila was super helpful and made sure that every student got the best chance at earning the grade they deserve. He is amazing and would suggest him to everyone. Very kind man who goes out of his way to help his students.
Great course and Professor Argila was outstanding. I took away more skills and knowledge that I had anticipated.
During the first class the prof had is bring in evaluation sheets he has us fill out after each class. At the end of class we had finished our assignments and he would not let us leave until the exact time the class ended. I am an adult and do not need to be treated like a child. Needless to say I dropped the class. Will not take him again.
I really did enjoy this professor a lot. He was really inspirational but their is a few things about him that just does not slide by me. One he treats you like a complete child. If you have to use the bathroom he just mocks you for it and makes you feel bad. You must remember some of us are over the age of 21. Great professor but lousy class.
Enjoyed the Coarse, Professor cares for students.
The class is very interesting! Attendance is mandatory, no excused absences, and if you miss 3 classes you will be dropped regardless if you have an A and its late in the semester which is stupid. Weekly quizzes and computer projects that each take about 2 hours. You you the textbook a lot. Just do everything he expects and you'll be fine.
Throughout this semester, I understood how computer technology worked over the last 50 years so I could be the next in a generation of digital natives to inspire people to think of their own ideas of that said technology in the next 50 years. As we move forward in life, we change and so does technology. In a changing world, we do new things forever
I always loved the lectures in class because the professor made the class engage and I liked doing the daily class feedback form because it made myself and other people around me pay attention even more. In addition, I felt like the grading process was fair and the syllabus was a great schedule to look at if anyone missed a day in class.
This teacher has been the most passionate educator I have been able to have the pleasure to learn from. I will take information from this class and be able to apply it to the rest of my life. Thank you.
I really enjoyed taking this class with Professor Argila, he was very helpful and you can tell he wants his students to succeed.
Looks like villain in cloudy with a chance of meatballs 2. Other than that its and easy A. If you never miss a day of class the Final is not mandatory.
If you didn't get a good grade on the homework for any reason you wouldn't be given credit for the project which are 100 points each. I had a few computer glitches which costed me a ton of points. He gives points for attendance, if you miss more than 3 classes he will drop you immediately. If you need flexibility with attendance, he's not the guy
This was a very useful class with real life skill application. Was a thorough course, very thoughtful homework and projects which reflected what we would actually find in the workplace or even at home.
What a man ! Carl is awesome. He takes quizzes every class, but if you just do the questions after each chapter you are not going to have any problem and you will get your A on the quizzes for sure. You have the projects which you should do them carefully, because Carl doesn't grade them. Just attend to his class, do the homework, and care A.
The overall structure of this course was successful. I enjoyed how the class would begin with music and a YouTube video. Mondays were for book lectures, while wednesdays were for quizzes and Excel/Access projects. The class is very well organized and easy to concentrate in.
Carl Aligra was an awesome source of inspiration. even though he is strict with no phones in class and attendance the environment he creates in his classroom enables students to focus, learn, laugh, and grow. he should be teaching other professors how to teach. I'm so glad i took this course and had him as the professor. A+++
I really enjoyed this class, overall. It was very organized and there was a clear objective for the course. The study guides were very helpful and enabled studies to earn great grades on the quizzes as long as they go over the study guides. Argila really cares about the students and cares about their success. It really shows.
He is such a great professor. Weekly quizzes, which are the same questions on the study guides--very easy. Each class begins with music and a fun YouTube video. Shows us how to use Excel and Access in detail. Lots of assignments outside of class, which aren't tough if you follow directions. No phones, please respect this amazing professor!
Proffesor Argila does a great job with this class. I have learned so much on computer safety, management, and knowledge. It was a very informative course that I feel better prepared me to pursue my career.
the lectures were interesting and i learned a lot about excel and access. Prof. Argila can be very impatient and condescending towards his students. I am a straight A student and always do my best in class, but felt like a failure when I got a question wrong, even if we have not learned that material yet. It was discouraging to say the least.
It's been a good class and it was nice to learn so much more about technology especially knowing very little. I'm glad to know excel and access now as well more about how to protect myself. It was nice to learn so much more about something so important in my life. It was good class and I actually really enjoyed it.
The curriculum is easy, study guides are the answers to weekly quizzes. Do your homework and show up you'll be fine. BUT, when you show up, be ready to be criticized, belittled, and feel like a failure even if you have an "A". Carl Argila has no respect for his students, he has the potential to care less. Communicates only on twitter, not canvas.
this professors requires every student to engage in every class. dont get caught daydreaming! weekly quiz same as study guide easy A. 12 online projects easy if you read instructions.
Great class! I learned a lot about information technology and taking CIM 1 has helped me lay the foundation of wanting to major in Business Administration with a concentration of Computer Information Management. The Microsoft Access and Excel Projects made me learn a lot.
I found this class very useful and will use the skills throughout my life.
I thoroughly enjoyed coming to this class every time! I wanted to become much more advanced in Excel and now feel more comfortable completing spreadsheets. Professor Argila was hilarious and was entertaining in lectures that kept my interest while being entertained. Definitely was one of the most important classes I have taken thus far in college.
This was a great class and I learned a lot! It was entertaining and I would recommend it to other students.
Proffesor Argila was a great online teacher. His classes are extremely informative, and he supports his students whole heartedly. Total 11/10 proffesor. #Microsoft #VisualStudios #Crab #Crab
Amazing prof. Went on tangents a few times but he always made sure to bring it back and relate it to a relevant topic. He is also really funny. Took his course online (which was a serious dampener on the learning experience) but I still learned a lot! He hates golf, Microsoft, and VSCode.
I enjoyed learning about computer technologies from someone who is passionate about the online world. This course was challenging and taught me many skills that I will carry in my career. I definitely enjoyed this class :)
I understand if you want to take this class to get a good grade, but if you intend on learning c++ or future computer classes he is not the person to take. I suggest taking Olivera over him.
I would just like to say that I actually really enjoyed this class and it definitely achieved my goal of wanting to become better at coding. This class was definitely a stepping stone to pursue my interest in computer science and now that I have learned just the beginning, I am eager to learn more and see what I do next.
If you want an easy A this is the class to take. I just don't feel like I learned much. He really goes off on many tangents and seems to have difficulty maintaining focus. If you are a comp sci major take someone else like Rousseau.
Nice guy, easy class. If you don't plan on taking 1B then take him. If you plan on taking any other CS classes than don't take him! I took him over the summer and got an A. I thought he was great until I got into 1B. It has been a struggle. I thought maybe I took the wrong 1B prof, but after talking to other students they just learned more in 1A.
Professor Argila made CS programming fun! I was really prepared for the next class CS1B with Professor Oliveira which all the CS I need to take. But after taking these two professors I'm thinking of taking more CS! Never thought I'd like CS but it is actually not bad. I completely disagree with the negative reviews written about these instructors.
The complaints about this professor are right. Very easy class. He's nice, but yells and goes way off topic. I'm a CS major and I don't feel like I've learned anything. If you've taken CS in HS or are a major then take someone else. I have a friend in another class and what they are learning is very different. He must be better at teaching CIM 1.
Good learning pace, Amazing lectures, and everything in the entire class is fully mapped out in front of you in day one. The weekly schedule on average for this class is pretty much read book chapter, complete homework, take easy quiz, listen to lecture for the next chapter, then repeat. Good class to step into comp sci.
It was a pleasure to be part of this class and to meet Professor Argila, who has led it awesomely!
He takes learning very seriously and wants his students to learn. No phones, and attendance is basically mandatory. quizzes are easy if you just read the chapter and getting an A was really easy. Classes can be boring he is pretty funny but i spent most of my time in class watching the clock.
It was a great class, learned a lot, and I'm very glad to have had Professor Argila. I would recommend this class to anybody, as Prof. Argila says that this class should not only be taken by Comp Sci majors. Thank you Professor Argila.
This class is an easy A! I thought I was learning alot and doing well. Now I am in CS1B and I am totally lost! I thought it was me, but I'm finding out he just didn't cover the same things. We are just reviewing stuff and it is all new to me! I think Argila is an okay guy, but wish I'd taken someone else.
Argila covers 1 chapter every 1 -2 weeks. Submit homework. Take quiz. Then go on to the next chapter. NO FINAL EXAM if you have perfect attendance. in class code reviews are great cause you see how other people do the homework.
DO NOT TAKE THIS CLASS!!! I am just coming out of his class, and my god it was the most awful class I've taken in my life. He "lectures" which is basically him going on a tangent about things that don't matter. His quizzes are hard, and it was not easy at all. I took this class thinking I would pass with an A, but I'm coming out of it with a C...
students who took argilas class because they thought it was an easy A got screwed. his class is a solid programming class which prepares you for CS1B. if youre not ready to work take an online class.
Professor Argila is one of those professors that you just won't forget. You may not understand him if you don't like dark humor. Everything he does is to help his students. Quizzes each week are pretty straightforward if you pay attention and read. Two practicums per semester that really test what you've learned. Perfect attendance = no final.
Very funny, lectures are informative and fresh Read the book AFTER lectures, not before Quizzes pull from book questions (answers are provided) Only 2 exams where you actually code, homework is majority of coding You do learn how to code, but most learning is about concepts/prepping for higher-level courses. Highly recommended if passionate
I want to thank you for a valuable semester! I definitely struggled a bit with a couple chapters towards the end of the semester but I always wanted to take an in person computer science class as my first class, as I thought that would be beneficial for learning, and it was. Thank you!
Easy, easy class. If you're not a CS major and you don't mind the rambling on and on about odd things that pop into his brain that day, he's your guy! If you are serious about learning to code be prepared to teach yourself or take someone else! He is an easy A if you are looking to boost your GPA. I am a CS major and wish I'd taken anybody else!
I appreciate how dedicated you are to the profession of teaching and how much you care about your students. No lie, this is the reason I remained in the class and was communicative when I did miss or anything.
I enjoyed your direct candor and your style of teaching. This class was eye opening regarding the foundational aspects of computer science and encouraged me to pursue a career in software engineering.
Professor Argila brings a life time of work experience to the classroom. he wrote a computer book. The best computer class Ive had. Be ready for lots of class interaction and his style of "humor".
Great jokes and sense of humor, enjoyed the class very much. Most entertaining professor award
He is the worst! The class is easy to pass if you want to teach yourself! He literally explains nothing useful! He is not amusing or interesting! Not convinced he really even knows what he is supposed to be teaching and not sure what we were supposed to be learning. The one shining light is that he is an easy grader. Don't feel like I learned much!
Sorry to see prof argila being trolled on RMP. I took him for cs1a. Really prepared me for cs 1b. Very informative lectures. Fair quizzes. Overall A+ class.
If you've decided to make Beef Wellington for your dinner party or holiday dinner, your entire crew is in for a treat. While this dish may seem daunting, we've broken it down step-by-step so you can serve up this holiday centerpiece with all of the flavor and none of the stress.
Don't take this class if you don't already know C++. His boring lectures are only on topics he wants to cover, meaning he will skip lots of topics from the book. This class will be really easy if you already know how to code. He doesn't try to help you in class if you don't know the answer to something. Likes to share too much personal information.
You're hilarious and this class was definitely engaging, vs any other class I've taken. Overall, this is the most memorable class I've had at Saddleback and IVC, so I appreciate you and thank you!
My CS1A class was quite tough. The grading was strict, and we couldn't use computers or phones, which made learning harder. The teacher mainly reviewed the textbook and showed code at the end of class. I think hands-on coding with guidance would be better. Plus, the random questions in class added stress. Overall, it was a challenging experience.
prof argila teaches a college level CS class that prepares you for the next CS class. requires work but you learn a lot. helps if yu have math 2 before. lots of chances for extra credit to pull up your grade.
This professor is either a hit or a miss, no phones in class, lectures barely cover the chapters, if a chapter is 10 sections he's going over 3 at best. Quizzes ask unrelated questions that have barely anything to do with the chapter, and practicum that he says no one can get 100% on because no one can make perfect code.Though he is funny,NOT WORTH
I didn't necessarily enjoy the lectures, but the class is pretty easy, and I learned a lot. If you get 100% attendance, the final is optional. There are two in-class coding assignments that are easy if you've done the homework. I originally did not like this class, but now that I'm in CS1B, I wish I could take a class with Professor Argila again.
Prof argila talks a lot. But 25% of your grade is class participation! He gives 10 weekly quizzes for 25% of your grade. A really fun class for geeks.
His head is shaped like an egg, so you know he's smart, and he waddles like an old man, so you know he's experienced. And he will share that experience with you through his long tangential rants during the lectures he gives, you'll be fine as long as you can teach yourself from the textbook, it's pretty straightforward.
This is an easy class but be prepared to teach yourself. He spends most of the class going off on unrelated tangents and being rude to students. He thinks he is funny, but he mostly amuses himself. I took AP computer science and learned more from that then this class. Seriously, take someone else, especially if you don't have a background in CS.
prof argila groks all things computers. awesome guy. great class for cs majors. read the book and come to class every day you'll do good. class camaraderie a big plus.
Great class, had a lot of fun, definitely solidified my plans in becoming a CS major in the future and plan to continue with this path.
He is the reason why I changed my major from Comp Sci to Comp Engineering. He's been working on technology before computers were even a thing. He's an old-fashioned guy, yet funny and knowledgeable guy. He is very strict and can come off as mean, but he wants his students to learn. Expect learning more outside of class, he also does code reviews.
Most of the learning is done at home via the textbook and YouTube lectures (by someone else) on the textbook. The professor himself "digresses" a lot meaning he goes on tangents about his beliefs/views or explaining something irrelevant to the class. The lectures in class are helpful but they're review of what you should have learned at home.
Carl is a cool and rather old-fashioned gentleman. He's very strict with his class but if you're a good student he is also a funny professor who says some funny and wild things. In terms of teaching style, it's a bit outdated and might not be the best for preparing you for future classes in CS. Going to class and taking notes is a must.
Great class and help me learn a lot more then I had in the past about computer science. Thank you for really helping everything make sense and tie together. I'm glad I got into this class.
i thought this class would make me want to change my major, but instead I liked it more. Thanks.
Professor Argila provided a wide variety of questions within each of his sessions, helping to boost student knowledge of topics while developing relationships with many of his students. His lectures, though off–topic at times, proved to me that his knowledge of the course and computer science in general was outstanding, and his passion for the topi
You will not learn from this teacher. Sure, he is funny for some people, but he is not a good teacher. I continued to CS1B and I do not even know half of the things that is being taught. Keep in mind I received an A in his class but I have no idea what is happening now. I have no clue why he has such a high rating.
Prof Argila's CS1A is demanding but rewarding. He has a unique teaching style that takes some adjusting, but if you put in the work and use resources like the textbook and Unstuckstudy, you'll come out with a solid CS foundation. The class can be tough, but the knowledge gained is invaluable.
This was a great class for my first Introduction to college. Even though at first you seemed like a duche bag, your class turned into one of my favorites of all time.
Bad teacher. He was condescending and arrogant while vailing it in humor. Makes mistakes and doesn't take responsibility. His lectures have errors and grading can be wrong but will not correct them making up some lame excuse instead.
The work isn't hard, but I taught myself most of the material. He goes off on tangents and doesn't get to the point. I'd recommend taking someone else if you want to learn to code. If you want an easy A, take him.
Highly structured. Weekly quizzes. Weekly homework. Two coding assignments. Really prepared me for cs1b.
Avoid Argila! He spent more time on tangents then on material we needed. I took him in the Spring and CS1B in the Summer. CS1B was much easier for my friends who took other profs. My friends caught me up, but this guy was awful.
Summer session was intense. We stayed on schedule. Learned a lot. He runs class strictly.
he does about a chapter a week. then a quiz. no final if u have perfect attendance. watch the videos and review the flash cards to ace the quizzes. he has lots of experience. learned a lot.
Despite others telling you to retire, you decided to keep teaching, sharing your interesting stories, and overall, having a positive impact on my life. This class was honestly by far one of the most entertaining and effective class that I've ever taken. Thank you for this.
Boring and condescending. Wish I'd taken someone else! Class is easy, but had to fill in the blanks myself. Goes off on random tangents and skips over topics.
Unreasonable and stubborn. Don't believe the ratings here, he is overrated. I feel he was a bad teacher with a terrible personality. Would make you feel bad if you didn't know the answer. Took it out on you if he had a bad day, while masking it as a joke. Take my advice and find any one else to learn from.
This has been one of the greatest classes I've ever had. I can't express this enough, I was so extremely nervous entering this class, I switched from business major to electrical engineering because of the soullessness and was more nervous about programming than math, and this class has laid all of that to rest.
Professor argila is very old school, he is extremely caring and genuine but very serious. He is straight forward and if you do the assignment and readings required you are Guaranteed to pass, how ever there are a lot of readings and studying required. Participation matters. And you are exempt from the final exam if you have perfect attendance.
This class was a fun experience. It really opened my eyes to program design and gave me a real solid understanding of computer programs. I feel confident i ncomputer programming even though thats not where my major is.
Excellent professor, a lot of reading from the textbook, and following the online lectures he posts. Also has a quizlet on his website that covers quiz questions. Really funny dude and speaks honestly, which makes for genuinely one of the most memorable classes I've ever had. Read the textbook, take notes, and you'll pass easily.
A+ for Professor Argila!
This was a great class I learned a lot outside of class with what i was taught here.
