He can teach well, and that's the most important thing in STAT 1100.
He's great at teaching

This is one of the nicest and most caring professors you'll meet. He really presents everything in an organized manner and if you are taking this course, taking it with him is the best.

A great teacher and a nice man. He's the best prof in the STAT department.
Loves to teach and it shows, makes the material easy to learn and presents it clearly. Definatly reccomend
Excellent professor, loves to teach, always there to help, one of the best I've ever had. Take him if you're taking Stats.
to-the-point. not bad at all
Excellent teacher! He's one of the best teachers I've had while at Pitt. Definitely recommended for someone not that great at math.
One of the best teachers I've ever had. Makes everything clear and understandable for students. Tests aren't hard. Good guy.
The nicest professor I've had at Pitt.
he's a great teacher and explains everything very very well!

discrimination exists, be aware!
seems to skip around alot when lecturing because he assumes that students have a base statistical knowledge....not always the case. also makes very very poor jokes, but at least he tries to make it interesting
One of the best professors I've ever had, and he's also a really friendly guy. He can take the hardest information and bring it to a level that anyone can understand. He loves teaching and it shows. I absolutely recommend this teacher, you'll get a lot from his class.
His class was torture. I dreaded going to it every week. He assumed that we were grad students of statistics. His exams are much harder than the material learned in class. Be prepared to study atleast 10-20 hours per test if you want a B, unless you're brilliant.
If you do all the homework that he assigns, you'll get a good grade. be prepared for a solid 2-3 hours a week of homework though.
Nicest professor I've ever had. I felt like he was only here for the joy of teaching and helping students. Very smart and wanted to pass everything on to students. I really enjoyed having him and this class.
Hard class. Hard material. Starts easy, then wham. Tons of HW, Quiz every week, plus Exams. Teacher is a great one though. Will spend all the time in the world trying to help you. If you have to take this class, take him. But be ready to work.
When I couldn't understand the class material he would spend hours with me, trying every possible way he could think of to help me. In the end he did, and I finally passed a class I had failed three times before. If you have to take Stats, take it with him, but be prepared to work your butt off.

Excellent teacher. Hes able to convey the information, which is fairly difficult, in a way that you can understand. Will help you with anything you are not sure of. All around nice guy too.
Very nice guy... was willing to explain anything. His tests were very fair.
lots of hw, and quizs, and the tests get hard and tricky quickly. his setup however makes it so you can do well even if you do poorly on some of the stuff. take this guy if you dont mind alot of work. also, devote time to study for the tests.
Statistics is a really hard course, but Dr. B will help you get through it. If you have problems, and are willing to sacrifice some time to get help, it is worth your while. Although he assigns a lot of work, the work is meant to help you in the class, you will see alot of HW/Quiz stuff on the exams, but be careful the exams are not easy.
Very helpful, a lot of homework but it's not too bad. Course gets easier as you go along. Quizzes are open note/open book, you can use one page of notes on tests. Kind of boring, but the course isn't impossible.
Moderate amount of work but it really helped to learn the material. Really nice guy!
To do well, you really need to stay caught up with the material. Although I did well in the end, I fell behind early on and it was hard getting back on track. Knowing when and where to use stat tests is more important than knowing the formulas, so you need to pay attention and get help when you think you don't know something. Very nice man.
This class was mighty difficult. However, Dr. Bodenschatz is a wonderful professor and person. He is sensitive to students' needs and really pays attention to the learning process and how to improve each class. STATS are hard for many of us, he made them bearable.
Stats is kind of confusing, but take Prof. Bodenschatz if you have to take it. Class is 3 exams, weekly hw (very lengthly), 5-6 quizzes, and a final. Work load is a lot, but it's a great class. Also, the exams get easier as you go, so hang in there if the first two are harder than you expect.
Don't spend a lot of time practicing the problems for the tests... it doesn't help. Just read and know the material from the book. And the sheet of notes is basically useless.
I HATE Stat. But, I liked this prof. His tests were way too long, but he adjusts what he does throughout the class depending upon how the class is doing. He is helpful and honestly cares about his students and how they do in his class. He also curves if needed. STATS suck for those who don't like them. He makes it a little more bearable.
Very nice teacher. He explains everything clearly and he wants you to do well.If needed,he adjusts the time for the tests .Always makes time to answer your questions.Stat is hard but if you need to take it make sure he is your teacher.
SO DIFFICULT! I spent a ridiculous amount of time on this class- I was in office hours EVERY WEEK for about 6 hours, trying to get help on the homework. You will either understand it or you won't. Bodenschatz is a very nice guy, but office hours were always PACKED because tons of students are very confused.
Great Teacher, easy to understand. He won an award recently and we got to take a couple pictures with him for a campus magazine cover! He deserves the award, as he has great teaching ability, compared to some Profs.
Excellent Prof. Smart man...talks about sports before every class. Very nice guy. Very easy to understand and is clear while teaching. This class is easy if you attend recitations and go to class. He has some teaching awards, so his greatness is documented. Def. take him for any Stat class you can.
Dr. Bodenschatz is one of the nicest professors I have ever had. This class wasn't as easy as I thought it would be but he seems to do all he can to ensure that everyone gets a decent grade.
Great professor! Is a teaching professor and he clearly enjoys his students. Is available and helpful during office hours several days a week. Gives practice exams that are similar to the tests, is very fair. I would definitely take another one of his classes.
Wonderful class. Highly recommended, even for non-majors.
Great teacher. Always willing to help and clarify concepts. Grading was extremely fair as were tests. Tries to make the classroom engaging and fun when possible. Highly recommended
One of the best professors i've ever had, he's not a tenure track professor so his primary objective is teaching
Such a great teacher, he's really dedicated and explains things clearly. The tests weren't too hard and you get extra points if you do all the homeworks. Plus. he's just a nice guy.
Dr. Bodenschatz is the nicest professor out there. He always opens up his lectures by talking about sports, which I always enjoyed. His class is very fair and easy if you attend lectures. The book is pretty useless other than for homework assignments. He legitimately cares about teaching and his students doing well.
the nicest professor ever had before!! exams are very fair. He gave us extra credits on the midterm exams, and homeworks. Keep doing your homework, it helps you understand the material better! The final is easier than the first two exams!
He has a sunny disposition and he really seems concerned about helping his student succeeds, as evidenced by his consistent reminders of undergraduate help resources. The text book is almost completely useless, but he explains everything thoroughly in class, so make sure you actually. I would recommend him
Not what expected of an intro stats course; very hard material (Z test, t tests, chi-square etc), tough exams even though we could use a sheet of notes. He isn't very clear in lecture, but I had an awesome TA. Take this course if you are interested in stats and math. If not, STAY AWAY and take another professor's course for this subject
Fair tests. Weekly homework that is collected and graded. He grades quickly, gives back assignments and tests within a reasonable time. Class is getting progressively harder but he makes it easy to pay attention and he is crystal clear when explaining concepts. Great stat professor.
Great teacher goes through a lot of interesting examples to get the students thinking about the material. Always happy.
Carl is one of my favorite professors ever! He is very easygoing and tried hard to make class funny/enjoyable. Always eager to help out if you go to office hours.
One of my favorite prof's. Always gave clear, helpful notes. The graded total for the hw is much lower than the actual total, so it's easy to get a good overall grade. Talks about sports for 5 minutes every class. Very nice, always in a good mood. Carl will never say anything remotely offensive as long as he lives haha
Carl Bodenschatz is just one of the most legitimately nice guys you will ever meet. He wants his students to do well, and grades accordingly. The material can be hard, but he is great at explaining it and is frequently available to help you if you need it. If you have the option to take his class, do it.
What a great guy! He has a very solid background and has held several important positions at several different universities, yet he remains humble and extremely approachable. I can't say enough about how nice and helpful this man is. I wish I had him for harder classes.
An ideal professor. He really cares about teaching the material thoroughly, lessons line up with the syllabus perfectly, doesn't keep you in class a minute late and is extremely approachable. Homework is helpful to do well on exams, which are fair, and quizzes are easy. My favorite math professor by far. Allowed our class to use cheat sheets.
Very nice. Probably one of the best stats teachers (based on what friends told me about theirs). Very helpful and willing to answer questions. Makes it easy to pass if you do all the work.
Very approachable, always willing to help. Extremely intelligent and a great professor. Learned a lot without feeling overwhelmed. Sincerely loves to teach
Carl is one of the best professors I have ever had. He wants students to succeed. If you go to class and do the homework the tests are easy
I chose Professor Bodenschatz after reading his ratings and seeing that he was relatively easy. However, I disagree with a lot of them after taking his class. This class is not easy, it requires quite a bit of work. It's not just plug-and-chug, but really understanding the concepts. Definitely study more than I did!
He is a great professor and does a great job at helping students understand the material. However, this is not a very easy class. Tests were difficult-I got C's when I went in feeling really good about the material. He is a great prof for this class though and going to lectures really helped in my opinion.
He is a really nice guy and good teacher, but the class is hard. Homework and quizzes are a good portion of your grade so you can still do okay if you mess up on the exams. Exams were pretty hard and could be a bit too long. The final was difficult. Overall he's a good techer but the material can be difficult
First few weeks are deceptively easy if you know anything about math, after that GO TO EVERY LECTURE if you don't want to be completely lost because the textbook was complete crap. Managed to pull of an A because he's very helpful and sympathetic and believes in curving. Great guy.
Very jolly man! Patient and willing to help.
Pretty much the most knowledgeable, personable, and friendly statistics professor. He LOVES teaching statistics, is fun to talk to, and really makes examples relatable and easy to understand. I've learned so much.
Very smart, very nice, and very understanding. You can tell that he loves teaching. Take him.
He is the greatest! TAKE HIM. Gave me an A and helped me boost my GPA.
Great professor, very jolly guy. Incredibly helpful especially in office hours. I'm amazed more people don't got o his office hours for help. Homework is a huge part, and the exams are definitely fair. Great professor and lecturer.
Literally the best professor I have had at Pitt. He is so kind, designs completely fair exams, goes over examples in class and genuinely cares about students. Take him if you can for any stat course.
Probably the single best professor I've had at Pitt so far. You can tell he really loves statistics and loves seeing students enthusiastic about the field. Tests are reasonable if you did the homework and paid attention in class.
Best Stats professor hands down. Incredibly fair tests if you did the homework and paid attention. Let's you use a cheat sheet for the exams which are mostly multiple choice. The homework assignment aren't bad and are great practice for the exams. Definitely take him!
My favorite professor at Pitt. He somehow knew my name before I ever spoke to him. Super friendly guy with an infectious enthusiasm for statistics. Very helpful and clear, lets you use a cheat sheet on tests, and just overall a great professor. If given the option, please take his class. You will not regret it.
Overall great professor. If you keep up with the weekly homework assignments and attend lecturestudy for the two exams and final should be an easy A. Does his best to make lectures not so boring by adding jokes and being enthusiastic, definitely would take again. Seems very willing to help students, although I did not seek it or put in much effort.
Dr. Bodenschatz is an incredibly genuine and knowledgable professor. His lectures, though not mandatory, were clear-cut and helpful. Weekly homework assignments provided great preparation for the quizzes and exams. Would def recommend
Going to class is basically useless. Carl spends all semester talking about the theory behind the statistical methods instead of how to actually perform the procedures. He doesn't test on these theories, so you have to read the book if you want to know what you're supposed to be doing. His tests can be tough because there is no partial credit.
My favorite professor at Pitt. He is extremely friendly, and his lecture is extremely clear and logically. If attend the lecture, don't need to read the texts. Allow one cheat sheet for midterms and two for final. I would like to take all the stat classes he is teaching.
very enthusiastic about teaching and makes you smile. 6 quizzes and lowest is dropped, 12 hw assignments, 2 exams, a final. go to lecture and do the homework and you'll be just fine. you get to use a cheat sheet on the exams. quizzes are open note and open book. I would definitely recommend as he is very willing to help and explain things!
The lectures are a little boring but if you go you will for sure pass. His curve is amazing and the exams are all multiple choice. The class has one homework assignment each week about 10-15 questions and usually all the questions are gone over in recitation. There's also 10 and your lowest grade gets dropped.
He's very enthusiastic about the subject and you can tell he cares about his students and wants them to succeed. Lectures and examples are very clear.
Great stat professor - he's very kind and helpful. Homework can be hard because he only covers examples in lecture, but the textbook is helpful. You have to work for your grade, and need to pay attention in lecture. 2 exams and final - you are allowed a cheat sheet for each exam, and a two-page cheat sheet for final. Study hard and you'll pass.
Great professor. If you do the homework you should be able to get an A.
Carl is a pretty cool guy, he starts each lecture with a sports update so if you are running late it won't be that big of a deal. That being said, it is important to attend lectures and put effort into the homework because it is easy to get "lulled to sleep" by the relative easiness of the first mid-term and then get hit hard by the second mid term
I loved Dr. Bodenschatz. He is such a nice and caring guy, and really wants his students to succeed in his class. He always tries to add fun examples to make statistics a little more interesting. If you have to take stats, take him! You won't regret it.
Super nice guy and a really easy class. As long as you do well on the tests you'll get an A, which is especially doable because a 90 is an A in his class. He has been teaching this class for a long time and is good at it. Attendance is optional
One of the best professors youll have at pitt. Lectures are very clear as he goes through the concepts and examples in a very organized manner. Homeworks are tricky but doable and his tests are more than fair especially since he allows a sheet of notes. Super nice guy and always teaches with a smile on his face. Highly recommend for stat students
Dr Bodenschatz is a great professor and an even better person. He wants you to succeed and do well and is always available to help out. I would recommend his classes to anyone, stat or those needing an intro stat course. His exams are tough but fair and as long as you prepare you should do well
I had Dr. Bodenschatz for Intro to Probability and Applied Regression. Absolutely incredible professor. The classes are both very easy, but you learn a lot. If you're planning on taking the Society of Actuaries' Exam P, Intro to Probability with Bodenschatz is a great course to prepare for it.
One of the most jolly men I've ever seen in my life. Truly fantastic human being. Lectures are often boring but that's just because of the material and he's so nice about everything. Class is manageable if you've taken AP stats, but either way it still is certainly not easy. Listen to everything he says in class it's important for exams.
For Intro to Probability, we were able to use a formula sheet for the three exams and final, so they were more about applying the skills than memorizing formulas. The homework was pretty difficult but the tests were much easier. As the other reviews say, he was compassionate, and truly enjoyed teaching.
The Santa Claus of Statistics: gives out knowledge to all. Lectures are enlightening. Tests are just like the homework. Showing up to class and taking good notes will get you a long way toward a great grade. If you want to understand probability deeply without too much stress, take this class.
He is a fair grader. His lecture is really clear.
All the 5.0 ratings are accurate. Prof. Bodenschatz is a really great professor who truly cares about his job. He will always answer clarifying questions and ensure everyone understands if they ask. He is also very responsive to email. Attendance is not mandatory but I would go anyway - his lectures aren't too bad.
prof. bodenschatz is a very kind man who sincerely cares about his students. homeworks are somewhat long but tests are straightforward. i definitely recommend him for this class
He's a decent choice for professor, although online lectures were a little boring. But he definitely cares about his students doing well and is welcoming in office hours. There's homework for every chapter (7 total), 3 exams, and a final. Definitely a nice guy, and will be a good experience if you put in the work.
Bodenschatz is a great guy and great professor but STAT 1151 is *much* harder than you might expect it to be, especially if you're not a math/stats major. Homework assignments take 4-6 hours each, and there is a TON of calculus involved so if you're not the best at calculus you are probably better off taking STAT 1000 or STAT 1100.
It is immediately apparent by his presence that Professor Bodenschatz is a bright and kind individual who cares deeply about his students. Sometimes his intelligence causes him to elaborate on things in a complex and hard-to-understand manner; however, if you keep on top of the readings before class and pay attention in lectures, all is well.
Dr. Bodenschatz is a fantastic professor, his enthusiasm really comes through. He gives many great examples in class/with online pdfs. STAT 1151 is definitely calc-heavy, so be prepared for that. Difficult class if you're not a math nerd. Great prof!
Carl is really nice and knowledgeable about the subject. The tests are more based on the textbook than the lectures Be really to put in the effort and spend time on it cause its not an easy course.
He was a nice professor and good teacher, but the homeworks were quite time consuming. Still a good class though. Mainly graded on a weekly homework + 3 exams throughout the semester.
1231 was a pretty tough class, it relied pretty much entirely on the textbook which I found difficult to read so I initially struggled. He's a nice person but I felt like if you didn't understand certain things from the textbook you'd fall way behind because his lectures weren't the easiest to understand or follow without an already solid grasp.
