Very Liberal. Lots of pro left wing stuff. No REAL conservative point of view given. Class is pretty easy though as long as you actually turn in your work and have half a brain your sure to get an A.
Boring!! I did not take notes or pay attention in class and made an A. Just watch the videos and read the articles and you can do well in there.
I enjoyed his classes. They might have been a bit boring, but if you paid attention you actually learned stuff.
Very easy, almost too easy. He is very unclear about responsibilities though. His upper level classes are better.
What a jerk!
I Hate This Man!!!!!!!
Stay away, that is all I have to say. Trust me.
This was my hardest class, find another professor
I found his class very entertaining and pretty easy. I don't know why everyone hates him so much. I learned a great deal as well.
He wasn't a hard teacher and not an ass...people love to complain. Do the work and read and do well. I didn't care for him too much as a teacher because yes he was boring, but I am also just not big on politics and that is why I hated the class.
Looks like several complainers in one class. I had worse than him...and I did learn some stuff in the class.
kinda a bast**d. not an incredibly hard class but he is very boring and pescimistic. i don't really care for him very much as a teacher.
horrible guy, horrible class, repetitive and the worst grader ever
Worst grader I've ever experienced. Picks favorites. Extremely repetitive, boring, and unorganized. Class was just aggravating, and while expecting a B, i got a D. No fun at all, overall bad attitude. Feel free not to take his classes.
He must have an evil twin. I thought he's very helpful.
He's tough. Fun lectures, but non-stop notes. 7 novels plus a lot of textbook reading. Random quizes. TESTS ARE REALLY HARD! No Reviews!!!
His class lasted down to the last SECOND. Boring lectures with notes. Tests were not too bad but definately picks his favorites in the class. Not a fair grader. Only a few papers throughout the semester.
He was a good professor. Do the extra credit assignments, they will bring up your grade at least a letter grade
... Just kinda boring. Makes it hard to learn... Very blah.
Funny videos.
Boring class, hard to stay awake through!
If you love the humor on Seinfeld, he's your man. He has a very quirky and sometimes dry sense of humor, but if you tune in..you'll get it. Daily Show was probably the highlight, some shocking stuff you probably would have never thought to be in a college class.
Sort of funny, but the jokes don't always work. Doesn't shy from controversial topics.
The written exams are pretty easy - stick to the format and you will make the perfect score. Study for the tests using the study guide - be comfortable with articles.
Cavalli is a controlling ****. The only outlets are located in the back of the room and EVERY DAY he counts the desks and tells everyone to move. I don't see the point. An attendance sheet is passed around daily. Exams are multiple choice/short answer, he grades the short answer pretty harsh. He is a big dummy who only knows about politics.
Terrible teacher. He cares more about where people are sitting in the classroom than teaching. Makes you get up & fill the seats in the front of the class room & takes up 15 minutes of an hour long class. Failed EVERY test & the exam reviews are USELESS. Tests are the hardest I've had & he grades unfairly. Do not recommend this teacher AT ALL!
HORRIBLE! He will mess up your GPA! You have to watch the Simpsons and Saturday Night Live youtube videos and then he puts it on the test. He doesnt put the lectures notes on the test and barely anything from the book is on the test. He needs to learn how to teach. He told us at the beginning of the year, if you made a C you did very good.
He is very boring, it is hard to stay awake in class. He tells you to read the chapters in the book, but then there are only like 2 questions on the test from the readings. Most of the questions are random from daily show clips or from his articles which are boring and hard to read.
Dr.C is on of the best professors at NGCSU, and he's also my advisor. Albeit he has his quirks but what professor doesn't? Higher lever Political Science classes call for more work end of story. All of the test and the final were essay format. He utilizes every textbook, and yes he uses youtube clips to make it interesting ! Awesome Professor.
Notice all the malcontents are in 1101, the introductory course. Therefore, these are most likely not majors in Poli Sci. As an upper-division teacher, he is excellent. He makes it clear what he wants, and you can deliver on the exams if you study for them. Without attendence and studying (I mean, this is college...), then forget about it.
I have taken him for two classes. He is a very weird, rude man. Do not take him unless it is your very last option!
No interest in poli sci yet I learned a lot. That says something! Good guy. Needs to work on jokes.
He is definitely not easy, but if you pay attention you'll do fine. You don't need the book....i never opened mine. I liked him...he's pretty funny! Tests are super easy if you pay attention...i learned alot.
Take him only as your last option. I'm a straight A student and a presidential scholar, yet I received a C- in his class. It is impossible to talk to him before or after class; he is very rude. You don't need you book, since it is worthless and doesn't follow his lectures. Some of my class mates, who also are A students, received C's as well...
Lectures are interesting at times. Dr. Cavalli knows his material. Test can be difficult if you do not prepare for them. I can't really say anything about his teaching stood out as outstanding, yet nothing was wrong with it either. I guess he about average as far as professors go. His study guides for the test are worthless.
He is a VERY hard professor. His class is not for the 1101 level he makes it as if it was a 4000 level class. Run away and try to find another teacher. His study guides are useless they are no help and neither is he. Seriously though run away or prepare to study as if you where attending medical school.
i just read the last comment. hard?? we only had one paper so far. talk to me after the exam. theres a lot of material, but theres also a lot to help on the web. my main complaint is that the room is boiling hot!!
Everyone is saying that he is hard, but I took him in spring 2010 and I made an "A". Its not a difficult class. He gives you handout that are pretty much the answers to the test. Take excellent notes in class and you will make an "A".
I heard bad rumors about him but I liked his class. He kept class interesting by throwing in a few jokes (Which I liked) along with cool videos. Pay attention in class, and that's all you need to do to get an A. If not, he provides many extra credit opportunities.
1101 was quite easy. He gives an outline of his notes & I mainly used that for my test, but still got an A. You have 3 papers, but they're super easy & he seems to grade them easy. I totally made up answers on the final, but got a 90. He makes jokes, but most don't get them. Test are multiply choice & short answer, but you don't have to answer all
I dont know why people are complaining about this class, because it is really easy. If you do the small amount of homework and pay attention in class, you wont really have to study to make an A. My only complaint is hes a little creepy and always prompts you to bribe him for an A on his tests, which could be nothing but it is wierd.
I honestly was not a fan of this class. He constantly would tell the class to look to the syllabus if they had any questions. Not a comfortable environment for speaking out during class. I thought I was going to end up with a low grade: the tests require a lot of studying. Pay attention to detail and take notes! This is not an easy A.
He is difficult to approach and talk to. He also is repetitive in his statements yet lacks clarity, especially on group or individual projects/assignments. Never can admit when he is wrong, and can be difficult to work with both inside and outside of class. If you had a choice between him and another professor, I would say take the other Professor.
Dr. Cavalli was absolutely awful. He lacks clarity, and people skills making him difficult to talk to, and impossible to relate with. His class is boring, filled with already stated ideas, and his own personal opinions. The class is not engaging for students, and lacks any originality, or enthusiasm. He also heavily micromanages his students.
Mr. Cavalli was a good professor. I got a B in the class with very little effort, just studying before the exams and writing a hand few of papers throughout the semester. Only downfall is that he wrote the book he uses in this class.
Relatively easy class. As long as you study for the tests and read the chapters, you'll do fine. He helps you out with the mandatory debate presentations, and all of his notes are online. He's pretty interesting and makes a lot of corny jokes.
LOVE HIM!!! I not a political science person but I was able to make an A. He really cares about the success of his students. Attend class and take notes and you'll be fine. never used the book.
This was not a bad class! Cavalli is clear and very concise on what he wants/expects and offers LOTS of extra credit. HOWEVER, if you are lazy you will suffer. Just get your stuff done and you'll make an easy A.
Cavalli is not as bad as people make him seem! He is fair, willing to work with you, and offers several opportunities to bring you your grade. His class is not easy, but if you put in the effort, you will learn a lot and get an awesome grade. I've taken his class three times and gotten an A each time.
Read the syllabus before asking him questions about the class, and don't get up in the middle of class either, he hates that. He's strict about those things, but this is an easy class. The papers are easy, and so are any other assignments. The tests are the only thing you have to work for. His lectures are interesting and he has a sense of humor.
Hes rude but if your feeling don't get easily hurt then hes a decent teacher that cares about the material. The test are mostly on lecture rather than the book so If you are good at learning by lecture this class will be pretty easy
I did not find Carl Cavalli to be helpful at all. I took AP Gov in highschool and found better answers to my questions in my old notebooks, than in his class lectures. He's generally a nice guy but is very redundant in his lectures.
Thrives on the fact that HE owns HIS realm in academia. His website, d2l, & syllabus are overly complicated and so is his course. Locating instructions on his assignments feels like a bureaucratic nightmare I'd experience at the IRS. He takes interesting topics in Political Science and instructs in an obnoxiously boring way. Arrogant & snobbish.
Is very well versed in his field. The class was strange, as he uses his own website that isn't very clear. Had 3 books for the class--all were necessary. Tests (3) were Essay Tests, each 20% of your grade. Huge Group project was very disorganized and difficult to manage. Gives good feedback and is fun to learn from if you actually get involved.
Cavalli was one of my favorite professors in my entire college career--not only does he have a fun, dry wit, but he is also eager to help students outside of class. In addition, he is extremely knowledgeable in his field. I would definitely recommend taking him (and don't forget to mention that you like Seinfeld, he will love you forever).
Professor Cavalli gave very good lectures that explained things very well. He showed many funny, yet relevant, videos also. There is one group project but it isn't bad and as long as you participate. The exams are very lecture heavy with little from the book. He grades the papers easily and as long as you meet the requirements you'll get an A.
1 group presentation that is mandatory. 3 two page papers. 3 essay form tests. He does grade you on attendance and participation. He wrote his own textbook, and both it and his lectures are confusing. He's also arrogant, and hard to communicate with. Very little homework though. Very easy but a very boring lecture class.
Fellow note takers beware, his Power Points will not make sense at all unless you actually take time to understand what he's talking about in the lecture. I didn't do this and struggled with studying for his tests. I'd look down to a bunch of nonsense every time. Other than that, the papers and projects were easy. I just hated how arrogant he was.
Dr. Cavalli is a good professor who knows what he's talking about. You have to read the textbooks in order to complete discussion posts. He assigns one group project in the latter half of the semester that involves a lot of work. He doesn't lecture very much but shows videos and has discussions that are relevant to the class material.
I've had Cavalli as a teacher multiple times. At the surface, his classes seem difficult and homework heavy, but once you get it down it's not bad at all. Definitely get the books, and show up for class because he always takes attendance. Only warning I have is about the group project, which can get messy but he will help if your members slack
Solid professor. No complaints. Lectures are easy to follow and he knows what he's talking about.
Took him for American government. If he has his assistant teacher ask her to have study sessions with you before tests that help tons!! make sure to take notes and turn everything on time. Also, take every single extra credit opportunity he presents which is a lot.
Only 3 tests, including the final, 3 papers, one group project, and some extra credit. Go to the Crossfire meetings because you get 1 point of EC each time you go (can only go 3 times), and you can just sit there and do nothing. If there is a TA, go to her study groups bc they help a lot. Study for the test a couple of hours, and you should do fine
He gives ample extra credit opportunities, and his assistant teacher hosts reviews before every test. He is lecture heavy, but his tests reflect what he emphasized in class. If you show up and go to the reviews you should get an A.
Hes a good teacher but you actually have to pay attention and take notes. He puts his lectures online but you have to show up to class and listen to him explain them. The tests are super easy 12 multiple choice and 2 short answer. Theres lots of extra credit opportunities. Hes funny and really smart just expects you to know it too.
Dr. Cavalli is a good professor. If he mentions something in lecture it will be on the test. He gives a lot of extra credit! He is an easy A if you show up and study his lectures! I would recommend taking him! He is very intellectual and caring!
I've taken Dr. Cavalli many times in my college career, and continue to respect him as a professor and political scientist. This is senior seminar, so be prepared to write. That being said, the amount of writing required seems excessive with 8 writing assignments in total (5+ pages each). Those who have to take this class, be prepared to write.
Professor Cavalli is very knowledgeable about his subject and does his best to get his students to care about it too. His lectures are very helpful in explaining the information from the textbook and he uses videos and pictures to further help his students. His classes are some of the best on campus and I would suggest him for a professor to anyone
Professor Cavalli makes you work for a good grade. He offers lots of extra credit, but you need to study in order to do good. He pull questions mainly from lectures and article presentations.
His class was not bad and he was a nice guy, but he is a very very tough grader. Make sure you read every article he gives you, the book, and watch all of the videos he provides. His tests are tough, but his lectures are pretty interesting.
Dr. Cavalli is a really good professor and knows what he's talking about. There are online discussion boards due every week, three tests which makes up 45% of your grade and a group project that makes up 35% of your grade. Dr. Cavalli gives good feedback on every assignment, but sometimes it takes him a while to grade things.
This class provided enough information to excel in the class with some effort. Extra credit opportunities allowed room for error. With a little bit of effort, this class is an easy B taught by a likeable professor.
Awesome professor! He teaches the content through powerpoint lectures, not posted later, so attendance is very important. He created a website for the course and posts outlines that are very helpful as well as study guides. Reading is required- free online textbook! There are several extra credit opportunities available, take advantage!
A great professor. Perhaps leans too heavily on entertainment vids with a heavy political slant. Has a clear idea of his audience that is accurate and understanding. He wants people to learn and doesn't like his or other people's time wasted. He runs a tight classroom, which is great as there's a lot of information presented.
Dr. Cavalli is a really nice professor. He always has office hours and gives plenty of extra credit, like an insane amount just for showing up to Zoom meetings. I took this online and we had a weekly discussion and weekly paper (3 pages, double spaced) but they were super easy. He is actually really nice and wants people to succeed. He is funny too
He's not the toughest grader but definitely not lenient either. He does expect a lot out of you. He wants you to succeed and make an A but he will not just hand it to you. I emailed him a lot and he always emailed me back in a reasonable amount of time. There is a big group project due at the end of the semester, and three exams (including final).
A wise professor who tries to make things current. He is no nonsense, if you have anything-and I mean ANY thing-hat would cause you to slip up, just drop the class. As a caretaker of a terminally ill parent, I honestly felt that he does not care about anything but his own due dates and own books he's written, even after multiple classes.
This is quite possibly the worst professor I have ever had. His lectures supposedly help with the tests, but that is not the case. His tests are not necessarily hard, but it is important that you read the textbook and watch the videos that he posts because they will be on there. He is always behind on the lectures and his class is a waste of time.
very lecture heavy and doesn't post power points afterwords, so you have to read the very long chapters of his own textbook to borderline understand anything. paper due at the end of every chapter and only three tests. very unprofessional when responding to important emails regarding personal issues such as family illness. good luck.
Dr Cavalli is a very intelligent individual and does in class lectures that usually contain some entertaining videos at times. Also be prepared to read chapters for his discussions, and the papers for each (easy). Overall not a lenient grader but a far one of you fill the pages, respond to the discussions, complete your presentation, and take notes
Dr. Cavalli is one of those nightmare teachers you hear about online. He has a lecture heavy class, but fell behind to the point we had to teach ourselves the material right before a test. He also expects a two page essay every week while giving very vague instructions on what to write about. Unless you are only taking his class, find another prof.
Dr. Cavalli isnt really a bad teacher. His lectures are informative but can get dull at times. I didnt mind going to his class but the homework is very strenuous for a POLS 1101 class. There are two page papers due every Friday @5 and multiple discussion posts due on Thursday nights. If you take him, just know you will have to work very hard.
Dr. Cavalli wasn't my favorite teacher, but I also doubted him all throughout the semester. He is a pretty tough grader, which lead me to thinking I would have to retake this class, however, receiving my final grade, I ended up making a B in the class. If you're taking Dr. Cavalli, just try your best and don't lose hope.
Dr. Cavalli's class was way more work than I expected for a intro class. There is a group project that was pretty easy and then a two page paper due every Friday and several discussion posts on Thursday, every week. For the tests make sure your read the articles from the presentations, he pulls a lot of his multi choice from there.
Dr. Cavalli has an amazing way of making a simple class super difficult. You have a two page paper due every Friday (which he grades hard), a group project, and 3 tests that are difficult to study for. Hes proud of his C- average in his classes, and be sure to look forward to his useless lectures. One of my hardest classes for a prerequisite.
He's passionate about what he teaches, but his class consists of boring long lectures. He doesn't accommodate to his students even when you let him know of something ahead of time. Lots of papers due at an inconvenient time. I came in liking the topic and wanting to learn and I left not liking it as much. Read a lot and explain it well, you'll pass
There are discussions and a paper every single week. you also have to present for a discussion grade and the exams are two essay questions and twelve mult choice
-Attendance is part of your test grade -Discussions/papers every week BUT only 6/12 discussions are graded. You have to do every paper -Read the textbook!! -Tests are relatively easy, but you have to do two long-answer questions per test and if you don't elaborate enough, points will be counted off -He has a sense of humor, and is a great teacher
This class could have been better. There are 10 papers(2 pager each), and 6 discussion post, 2 test, final and the debate/presentation. Took a MWF class and he almost never had class on Friday and textbook is online so that was nice. Downside is very loud videos, goes overtime often and will probably only get through 3 slides a day. Pretty nice guy
You have weekly DB, 2 exams, and FE, along with a group project. It is all easy but the exams. One because they are all written based. No matter if you're right or wrong he takes points off. You don't get the exam questions until 2/3 days before the exam. Obviously, you're not going to be able to remember your practice one's word for word.
This professor is everything you hate in a professor. Multiple tests/exams, lots of reading, a group project with such broad topics, etc. He goes over 3-5 PowerPoint slides then runs his mouth the rest of class. So you're never ready for the exams... which are written response ones. He never gives details in a reasonable amount of time. DON'T TAKE!
This professor is a piece of shit. The class was hybrid, so we only had class Thursday. All the dude does is run his mouth about random things. Never answers your question fully. The exams are written exams. Which again, most of it he never goes over. Then on top of that you have a group project. DO NOT TAKE HIM.
This professor is a pos. He sucks at teaching, he gives all these readings and never goes over them... until you have taken the exam. Yes, you read that right. He did not go over many readings until after we took exam 2. Do not take his slow ass.
Worst professor I have ever taken! He makes life and assignments more stressful than they should be. Sucks at teaching! He is never clear, and always mumbles or doesn't answer your questions thoroughly. He never puts grades in at a reasonable time. This professor is a POS. He needs to retire or get better at teaching. But he does give extra credit.
The only good thing about him is that he gives extra credit. Which helps balance his shitty teaching. When I say shitty, I mean it. He will say, "we have a lot to cover" then run his mouth for 10-20 mins of class. Go over four/five slides, then he runs his mouth again. Do not take him!
Dont take him
Every week you need to read a chapter in his textbook, write a two-page paper, and post a discussion board. Does have extra credit opportunities, but not many points. Every exam is 20 points which enables few mistakes for a good grade. By the end of the first half of the semester, my class had a grade average of 63.
DO NOT TAKE I listened to everyone who has taken him in the past. They said he was a good professor, and caring. Nope, both lies. He is a trash professor. He doesn't care about you. He half ass answers questions and even shrugs you away. Apparently he grades exams on vocabulary. Your answer could be right, but if you don't use vocab you're wrong.
He sucks at teaching. His presentations are the same as the discussion boards. He doesn't go more in-depth. All you talk about is the discussion board, after discussion board. Until he uploads a role-playing article, but he calls on the same people every time. I passed his class but I was miserable in class, so I would weigh your thoughts.
I had Professor Cavalli for American Government. You need to put effort into this class to pass it. There are 2-page papers due almost every Friday, and weekly discussion posts that are worth more than the papers. You need to read his textbook to stay up to date in the class, and there's only 3 tests. And you must show up to class to get credit.
DO NOT TAKE THIS MAN!!! Attendance is mandatory and is a grade. He is always behind in lectures. Grading sucks, and he gets mad about people coming in late or even leaving to go to the bathroom, man is weird. Lots of papers like every week and they are due at 8pm instead of 11:59 but he doesn't grade them earlier in fact he is behind in grades.
I required this class for my major and dropped it halfway through my first semester. DO NOT TAKE THIS PROF. I'm someone who is great with American government and I have never had a harder time in a class. Papers are due at weird times and he sets up his class page terribly. Weird about attendance and going to the bathroom during class.
I had him my first pols class freshman year and enjoyed my time with him. He's excellent about answering emails, going over material mentioned on exams, and I feel his "weekly" essays that aren't really weekly were a very approachable challenge
Super weird about students being literally a minute late or having to use the bathroom. Claimed that it interupted the class but he was the only one causing disruption. Took time out of class to yell at a student, this is not high school, we are all adults. Very unprofessional and rude, do not recommend taking him.
This was my least favorite class I have ever taken. You have 2 page essays due almost every friday even if you have a test that week. There is only 3 test total each worth 20% of your grade and they're pretty hard. It very difficult to know what to study. He doesnt really care about the students and how they do. Would not take this professor!!!
Honestly, This is one of the worst lecturers and teachers I've ever had. His preferred teaching style is lecturing through uninteresting PowerPoints while he hurls monotone facts at you! Be prepared for two essay question exams and middling discourse from a professor who might put you to sleep, but he probably wouldn't be great at that either.
A 2-page paper is due every Friday and gives boring lectures. Don't take him there is better out there.
Will not hear you out if you have questions about assignments or why he gave you a certain grade. He is knowledgeable in what he teaches, but he does not know how to teach it. He just goes on rants/tangents then complains when we are behind in the lecture. Pretty harsh grader on exams and papers. I advise you to take a different professor.
This is a hard class, but if you put the work in, study, attend all his lectures, and read the textbook, you will be fine.
Don't take Cavalli. He is always behind on the lectures and forces you to teach yourself the units by reading his confusing textbook. He's passive aggressive when answering emails. I don't feel like he cares if his students do good and is proud of his C average. He rants about nothing during his lectures. Also gives out a lot of homework.
2 page paper due every Friday. Discussion post due every Thursday. He gets behind in lectures; teach the material yourself. The tests are 12 MC and 2 short answer questions. The papers are pretty easy, you just have to make sure you schedule out time to do them to the full completion. I went to his office hours once and he was pretty helpful.
Tough class, but using unstuck AI and the free textbook helped me stay on track. Attend lectures and manage the workload to succeed.
Only take this class if you want a TON unnessary work, endless writing and unsermountable levels of study material. I really enjoy the topics covered, but this professor just made me hate this class. his assignments are also usually confisung to get and any questions emailed to him are met with blunt and consescedning replies.
Difficult class. Doesn't really teach and everything is a teach yourself base if you prefer that. The grading is horrible and you don't know your grade until the very end or after finals.
Allow enough time for discussion posts because they are tedious but not difficult; tests are 2 written response questions with multiple parts (make sure you study using the textbook and course materials); large group project at the end; Cavalli is a good communicator with clear expectations for the course.
