Hoeger is the best chemistry professor you can take for lower division courses (funny, clear, helpful.etc.) . But don't let that fool you, he's a tough professor...you must study! Also, prior to his lectures, print out the notes that he gives students on his website and take notes on that...I found that to be very helpful.
I honestly think that he's the best teacher I've ever had. This is the first UC class I've taken and was worth it. He is very clear and to the point. He makes the material understandable and almost fun. His tests can still be a bit tough but as long as you study, there should be no problem. Podcasts are helpful b/c his lectures help. Highly recomme
His class is pretty hard. When I took him in 6AH, it was like he was speaking to me in a different language. 6c was hard too. My TAS helped a lot. Hoeger was usually too intimidating to go to office hours, but he did kind of answer your questions with a long paragraph. He's fair at the end if you get all your hw and attend. pts.
People often complain that he is hard, but I think he's a fantastic teacher just teaching a hard subject. Take him for 6A and you will be well prepared for the rest of the series. Exams are hard, but manageable.
hes hard, but he knows his stuff. lectures are slightly boring, so you really need to read and study hard because his tests are killer.
he knows what he's teaching, tests can be kinda hard so you gotta study a lot and review notes. he seems alright though. only recommend him for chem4
He really knows what he is talking about and seems to enjoy teaching. There is a lot of work for this class, but no surprises. His tests dont necessarily have tricky problems, just make sure you know EVERYTHING he has mentioned because you are liable for it. Just do the work, study, and you'll get the grade that you deserve.
Chem 4: His lectures are fun to listen to but his midterms are extremely harder then what's on the homework. Also his labs are soooo annoying. TAs in this course has no office hours so if you really need help in the cours find a friend in chem 6 to help you. TAs are there just to prepare the labs and grade the labs/midterms.
Professor Hoeger is an amazing professor over all. I had a terrible experience in high school chemistery and went in to Chem4 knowing virtually nothing. I now feel entirely prepared for the coming chemistry series, and plan on taking Hoeger all the way through it.
hoeger makes everything very clear to understand.i came into chem4 knowing nothing.he's really good.do all the homework problems, more than once.cause his midterms are killer!!!and labs are fun, and if you get amy, you are sooooo lucky.so yeah, hoeger is a good prof, just tests real hard.
He's hilarious and his lectures can be boring but fun when he gets off track. I didn't find his midterms to be too difficult; the previous midterms he posted helped a lot as well as just doing the homework problems and paying attention in lecture.
Professor Hoeger enjoys teaching, which makes the class fun. I entered the class without no chemistroy background, and find his class was rather difficult. However, his teaching styles is one of the best in UCSD. I am definitely going to take his class for chem 6A in WI08.
He teaches straight to the point and with fluidity, so take notes on most thing he mentions. Midterms and tests are TRICKY! Know your material. Only issues are big ones!! (1) EARLY classes so no partying or you won't want to come. (2) He uses the dreaded WebCT A LOT of the time; pain in neck! Hoeger says Winn is exact same as him!(Just no WebCT ;])
I've taken Hoeger 3 times for 3 different chem courses. I think he does a great job at explaining a lot of the concepts. He's also a bit of a sarcastic ass, but it's all out of good fun. The man has an award for teaching. U should take his class(es)!
AWESOME PROFESSOR! Went to his Chem4 (Basic Chem) class knowing almost NOTHING, and learned a lot. Easy to understand and teaches the concepts well during his lectures. Has a sarcastic sense of humor, but means well. Tests ARE hard and stresses on calculations in his exams. However, with the curves you'll be fine :)
summer07. it was summer so it went by quick. gave same amount of hw he did during a regular quarter. his teaching style is more on problem solving(how to do the problems and less on concepts). so if u learn by doing stuff instead of reading, u should really take him. i liked the class. he grades super easy in the summer cuz its only 5 weeks.
Chem 4 is something that only Hoeger teaches, Fall quarter only. It is a GREAT intro to the 6 Series. I took 6A after it, got an A+. Its a great into course, with even an intro lab. You cover basic principles of chem, nothing too hard. Its a great GPA boost and Hoeger is a great professor to start your chemistry Career with! TAKE CHEM 4! seriously.
Hoeger was hard! He doesn't really explain things well and his exams are SUPER difficult, not to mention he has an attitude. The only reason I got by with a B+ was because I had to study extra hard and also because the curve helped.
OK teacher, sort of makes you feel stupid for asking questions sometimes. 1st midterm not bad, so he made up for it and more on the 2nd and had pizza delivered during test. fair grades overall, average is B. HW checked, 4 quizes, get to drop something in end. students learn a lot and it is worthwhile even though intimidating to take this class.
He is a great professor. His exams are hard, but he curves the class so it's possible to fail all exams and get a C. Gives credit for attendance, although it is not mandatory. Puts his powerpoints online and also podcasts, so it is possible to get material without attending class..his explanations do help though, so I would recommend going to class
You won't get a clearer professor for Chem-period. This guy repeats stuff in lecture that he knows people are taking notes on and even gives you easier ways to do things (e.g. sucessive approximation)He does podcasts also. On the negative side his tests are extremely difficult. You need to be a good problem solver. Good professor, but hard too.
Hoeger is definitely a hard professor, however he makes things clear in lecture and definitely knows what he is talking about. Attendance to lectures is key for getting a good grade in class and outside studying is highly recommended.
I do not know if it was just the material covered in 6B, but I found this class very difficult as soon as we reached acids and bases. Know acids and bases or your screwed for the midterm. Also I liked Darby Winn, my chem 6A teacher better. She put up solutions to the midterms and helpful powerpoint slides.
Definitely a hard class! He's pretty good, but I wished he did more examples on the board like Johnson. I do not know whether he notices it or not, but his personality tends to belittle the people who come in for help or on e-mails. Nonetheless, he is a funny and knowledgeable guy. I would take him over most other chemistry professors.
great professor! very funny and extremely intelligent. all lectures slides are posted on webct, so don't focus on taking notes, just focus on listening. highly recommended
the best prof i've had so far... he taught the material well and if you know how to do the homework problems, you should be able to do well on the exams... the final was def harder than the midterms. seriously the BEST prof i've ever had.
Go to his lecture. His lecture is helpful. If you didn't go you have to read the book. His tests are pretty hard. It makes you think. Try to do well in quiz, but if you don't well, you should still study for it. Those quiz will be pretty good practice.
He knows his stuff so he has a right to be on the arrogant side. Very good professor.. you learn a lot. Quizzes in section help a lot, and almost everyone passes. Just go to class, do practice tests and you'll be fine
Awesome professor! Take his class if you can!
very good prof for chem 6 honors series. exams are difficult but fair, curves are generous. has very good TA's (but do not take liz)
He posts podcasts for his lectures, but, honestly, it's so much easier to go to every lecture. He's very clear about explaining things but it's much easier being able to see what he writes on the board. He's easy to learn from, I would recommend him to anyone. Exams are relevant and fair.
Dr. Carl Hoeger and his ragtag group of TA's are an elite group of "GPA assassins". Nothing personal against the guys. I did well enough. But, be forewarned, his classes are like boxing a kangaroo. Once you get down, you can't get back up.
this class was stupid...he favors all the girls and teaches completely random stuff...he tests you on random material that's not even in the book in order to get the curve to be lower...don't be fooled by this class!! he has a horrible attitude also...i went to his office hours and he completely just blew me off like i was no one
Watch out... Dr. Hoeger knows that everyone who is taking his class is more than likely a pre-med student. Hence, he does a very good job at making sure you do not reach that goal by adding arbitrary material on his exams.
I thought he was extremely hard at first until I looked at my final grade. I thought I got a B-/C+ in the class, but it was actually a B+, which shows that he gives VERY generous curves. He made me understand general chem and I learned a lot from him. The only ppl who don't like him are those who slacked off & didn't study.
Dr. Hoeger is a very good professor. His class is much fun and its extremley useful for students who do not remember much from high school. The labs are a killer but they are useful. His midterms are hard, study for those but the final is reasonable. He gives participation points and the entire grade is curved. Take him for all your chem classes.
he is very hard but then he can really teaches; heck, hes the one that wrote the textbook! [part of it btw] if you really want to learn chem i recommend that you take him because he's very clear at teaching. but watch out! he's pretty hard so don't you fall behind!!
Dr.Hoeger is a really fun professor. His class isn't hard if you pay attention and study. but be sure to spend some time on chem before midterms and final cause you wouldn't want to fall behind.
He is a good professor. I learned a lot from him. His tests are extremely difficult, but the good thing about it is that it's curved. If you do poorly on one of your midterms, then you can drop it only if you did well on your final. He's funny at times. Labs are worth a lot of points, as well. Your lowest lab score will be dropped.
He's awesome. I guess it was easier for me because i already knew everything he was teaching so i barely studied for his class and the only thing i did was go to lecture and do the labs.
Scary professor, but clear lectures. Homework is helpful for test problems. Requires some work, but not unreasonable amounts.
Professor Hoeger is pretty funny in lectures and does a good job during them too. He also posts his lectures online. Know your nomenclature. Good class but the tests are tough! Labs are kinda lame but overall TA's make it fun. Hoeger also curves!
Dr. Hoeger is a pretty good professor. He is pretty approachable despite that some think that he makes his students feel dumb. His class can get hard and the exams [especially the final] are too, but you just gotta study hard and go to review session when you can [curve helps too] If you've been exposed to Chemistry and did well you should be fine.
Hard class, he is a little rough on the students.
Great Professor! Explains the material very well. As long as you do the homework and actually try to understand the concepts behind it, you'll do fine in the class! Class average is usually low but he grades on a curve.
Hard teacher, hard class but he's entertaining. if you show up and do your work you will do okay. He grades on a curve. My biggest complaint is that he's not super clear on what will be on the tests.
The class is fairly diffiuclt if you don't understand the concepts and do hw. Dr. Hoeger's exams are mostly replica of the hw he assigns. Obviosuly there are some trick questions, but he is the BEST at UCSD. if you really want to learn and understand, then definitely take him! I cannot emphasize more!!! A great choice...trsut me
wow...there is some good news and some bad news!!! the bad news is...don't expect to learn a single thing...all he does is talk and gives no examples!!! and is not the nicest man in the world...the good news is he has an unbelievable curve that saves your life...one of the best if not the best curver. I would take him if your okay in chemistry
The class average is usually 50% so the curve is low. If you're ok at chem then you should take him. He doesn't really do any examples so do your hw.Really hard exams!!
Not a very nice guy, actually rather arrogant and condescending, but hands down the best professor I have ever had.
I've had him since fall quarter and I started in CHEM 4. Simply put, he's really good; take him. Lectures are clear and do the homework, because some similar problems will be on the exam. Also note the problems he goes over during lectures. The ones that take up a good amount of time will be on the free response section of the exam.
Like usual, the negative comments on this professor come from the people who got C's or convinced themselves that they were A material and really not. Hoeger is probably the best lecturer in the chem department next to Ternansky. Tough tests, but for a reason since chem6C is an easy subject in the first place. His final was very lecture based.
Prof Hoeger was probably one of the most amazing teachers ive ever had for the chem department so far. Yes he does seem a little intimidating at the beginning but thats just how he is. He ended up warming up to all of us. You will understand alot about 140b and his grading system was fair. must take
two honors chem classes with him - A's in both. he's super clear and lectures are clicker points anyways so go to lecture. when his tests are too easy, it's stupid because the people who get points off are just careless. his harder tests are legit - how an honors class should be but they can be long. oh and he likes lolcats. awesome guy.
Great professor, but the ta's weren't that great. Go to lecture! exams based more on lecture than on the textbook readings. be sure to have a strong background in calculus if u wanna take the honors series. The curve at the end was extremely generous.
Hoeger is amazing! Chem 4 is awesome preparation for the 6 series. I had no chem in HS, and tried chem 6A the previous quarter. I had to drop. After this class, I feel super confident about going into 6A. Hoeger may come off as tough at first, but he is a really nice guy who loves teaching and helping his students. Could not recommend him more.
At first, his class came off as really hard. However, I came to realize it really helped me, not only in Chemistry, but also for college in general and just learning how to be an independent student. Do the homework problems he recommends and take good notes in class and read the book if you need to. Go to office hours for lab!!
probably the BEST prof in the entire chemistry department. Comes off harsh at first, but he has to lecture 300 people! He's a nice guy guy, really. The class required a lot of self-motivation and it really prepared me for my other classes in college. I agree with all the POSITIVE comments... HOEGER is a must! class at 8am, however, is not.
he knows his stuff, but NOT FAIR IN GRADING THO!!! I had a 75% whereas a friend had a 43%, and the other had a 55% in the class before our final exam. I received a better grade than both on the final....and somehow we all ended up getting a C for chemistry. and we all had the same ta!! which doesn't make sense. if u take him, don't even try........
Wow...just wow. This guy is amazing. I took 140b with him and I really learned so much. He is so clear and such a great lecturer. Seriously, like if he wasn't married, I'd totally ask him out. He's so cool and so smart. His tests are represented. It's great. Love. Peace out.
He's not a bad professor. He just makes weird jokes sometimes. His classes are usually in the early mornings though.
This professor is terrible. He makes bad jokes. He does not explain any important math problems. He uses ALEKS and depends that the students will learn from some internet tutor.
Excellent Lecturer, tests were difficult but doable (plus the curve saves your life), And about ALEKS, the internet tutor, he doesn't "depend" on it , but rather uses it as a supplement to his lectures. I think the major reason I did so well on the final was because a huge chunk of it had questions that I practiced on ALEKS.
I've had Hoeger for 2 quarters now and can say that he is a very good professor overall. Chem 4 prepares you well for the 6 series, although in 6A, he does not demonstrate how to solve many problems in lecture and you'll have to figure out a lot on your own. Be ready for TMI jokes and 8AM lectures. And don't worry, he curves well.
Very good professor, I would definitely recommend him. Make sure to read the book and do the homework problems. He is also very helpful in office hours.
Dr. Hoeger is amazing. He's an awesome teacher with a very clear lecture format. His tests cover exactly what he says they will and if you put in lots of time and work you'll get an A. He's always available for extra help. He always kept me interested and awake which is saying a lot as this class was at 8:00 a.m.!! You rock Dr. H!
He thinks being sarcastic and making immature jokes makes him cool or something. Has no respect or care for students. Otherwise, a solid lecturer with fair tests.
Don't believe the hype. Take him for the general chemistry classes but DO NOT TAKE HIM FOR OCHEM. His midterm was extremely hard, he gave no partial credit and had a LARGE guessing penalty. Has weekly quizzes everyone fails and makes you do hours of hw for credit. I highly recommend WAITING for an easier professor.
This professor is cool and funny in lecture, but only take him for the general chem series (non honors). Don't be scared to go to office hours, and if you take the class seriously and study very hard, you will do fine
Awesome professor, his arrogance is the best. But he still cares about his students, even when hiding it in lecture. His tests are hard, but that is honestly expected for OCHEM. Yes he does require homework, but in OCHEM it is practically required in order for you to do well in the class. Most of the TA's will be helpfull as well.
OK. Let's get real. This is O CHEM. Email me and I'll give you a Benjamin if you can find a Chem 140B class that isn't difficult. Hoeger tops all my other chem profs (Itook 140A twice) in terms of clarity and teaching style. Yes, tests are hard, but he has a grading system that is very fair (drop a test, final 2x points which if you do well helps)
hated him at first but later decided he's pretty cool. 140B is a TON of hard information. it requires HOURS and HOURS of work. pay attention to what he WRITES vs slides in lecture. it's on the exam. maybe objectives aren't always crystal clear at first but it is clear that he's VERY available for help and that he wants his students to succeed.
He's definitely not as bad as other people say. Actually, he isn't even bad. I thought Hoeger was an excellent teacher who was fair, and gave a huge curve and grade boost when he wasn't. I recommend him for anyone, because as long as you're willing to put in the work, you'll ace the class. I had a C+ for 140A, but an A for this class. Just try hard
Good professor. Funny lectures. Mean person during tests :(.
Interesting teacher, makes many jokes to keep class entertained. I hate this subject but he really does help and teaches it well. Recommend for everyone.
Dr. Hoeger is an EXCELLENT professor. He truly cares about students learning, which is hard to find on campus. With this said, he WILL challenge you, but if you want to gain a deeper understanding of general chemistry, this is the one to go!!!!
8 in the morning is not fun but the class is pretty fun. Take his class! :)
He's not a bad teacher, but the hw program he uses, Masteringchemistry, takes up a ridiculous amount of time. His tests are hard and even though he lets you use cheat sheets they dont help much. 8am class isnt fun either.
Hoeger is definitely an excellent professor to start off with especially as a freshman. I had a rough time adjusting to the college pace but his class wasn't as bad. He has podcasts which makes it super helpful and he is an extremely fair professor.
Guessing penalties on exams! No partial credit on exam questions! Half of the problems are written in 'chains' so that if you don't get #11 right, he won't even grade #12 or 13. The comments about him being easy and fair are probably written by him. His class is out of 800 points and you'll be damn lucky if you get over half. Ridiculous!
If you get less than half the points then obviously you didn't have any points to start with before the curve.
I thought he was a great professor for chem 4. Very clear and thorough. Labs were pretty easy to follow but some were ridicously confusing. Mastering chemistry was really helpful too, especially preparing you for the midterms. The final was a little harder than I thought. So study for that!
Very cool guy. Always gave good a good speech after the midterms were passed back with 30% averages. Good times.
Extremely helpfull! Go to his office hours! He comes across as a little harsh at first, but is actually very fair, and a really good teacher.
Two midterms, one final, homework, and participation. You can drop your lowest midterm, or reduce the weight of your final if that's best for your grade. Exams are hard (Honors class!) but won't expect you to know anything beyond what was taught or in the book. Prof. Hoeger is funny with tons of anecdotes... as long as you don't cheat on tests!
Hoeger is.... not fun. Yes, he teaches well, but he has a very arrogant and condescending attitude. Sometimes doesn't follow up on office hours and he responds to emails very rudely. In the future, I plan on avoiding his class if possible. Not the worst person in the world, but certainly not a professor I would want again. Take someone else.
Best professor at UCSD if you're smart and willing to put in the effort. Absolutely merciless if you're a moron or don't do the work. I would take him for every class at UCSD if I could, hands down.
Classes are at 8 in the morning and all the way at York, which isn't very fun. Plus, they're mandatory for iClicker points. His midterms were pretty decent but his final was pretty difficult. Overall, a decent teacher.
went to his office hours and i would say his attitude was a bit rude, and he never changed my midterm grade even though it was a point addition error, tests are difficult but do the homework.
I dropped chem 6A in the fall and took it again in the winter. He was much more helpful than Professor Czech... He posts lectures, podcasts, suggested problems, practice quizzes and midterms. He's very organized, approachable and dedicated to your learning. I recommend him!
Great
Hoeger is a great professor. He might seem like tough/strict at first, but he's actually a pretty cool guy. Likes LOLcats. Too bad I never had a real conversation with him since I get soooo intimidated (by anyone) so easily. ):
He really cares about his students!
Well, Hoeger is a good professor. Take him if you want to kill your GPA though. He's tough, but he sets a good foundation for you. His class is weird though, it seems like he doesn't give a curve at all.
He's a great professor and really tries to break down the chem concepts for you. He teaches by slides, and sometimes he goes really fast...so you have to go back to podcast to make up on what was said. He's also crazy hard and a 60% average on exams is considered amazing. The class is curved and dropping one midterm for a quiz score really helps.
I took Hoeger for Honors Gen Chem and did really well. Then I took him for 140C (his first time teaching it) and ended up withdrawing. Hoeger is extremely knowledgeable about organic chemistry, but is also very condescending and uses fear and intimidation in his class (which I don't agree with). Midterms are a lot harder than you expect.
Hoeger is extremely knowledgeable. I had him for gen chem series and for 140C. His midterms are definitely challenging but still fair; everything on the test was discussed during lecture or directly from the homework problems. In order to succeed in the class, one had to keep up/review the lectures and work diligently on hw.
Dr. Hoeger is super amazing. He is an extremely understanding person. His class can be hard but there are plenty of ways for you to learn it, especially office hours. He is straight-forward, no bs, and he is super interested in what he does. Take him! He'll make you work hard but it's totally worth it.
I don't understand my grade at all! I got super super above average by like 20% on the midterms and final and ended up with a B+. makes you attend class with iclicker, exams are hard, and so was my TA! I only got 1 wrong for the performance points and I didn't get full points like he said,Uses intimidation n assumes were all science related majors
his tests were extremely fair..if you did the hw and understood it..guaranteed to do well.Very nice and helpful during office hours..nice curve...definitely a lot of hard work but if you go to class and do the homework..should get a good grade :)hes also got a sarcastic sense of humor so be aware of that ..haha
Class is mandatory for clicker questions. Tests are really tough, but are a mix of what you see in lecture and what you see in the book. If you study, you will get a good grade. Really cares about getting his students to learn the material to be prepared for later classes, and it works
Dr. Hoeger is a great professor! His exams are pretty hard, and my TA gave pretty difficult quizzes as well. The class is quite stressful as you will get low grades on the exams, but the curve is great! I went into the final with a D according to my raw scores and came out with an A-! I definitely recommend him as he is a great professor :)
great professor, makes the class interesting with some fun comparisons and all, but very strict. Overall I learned a lot from him, just a bit intimidated to go to his office hours haha!
He went through the material pretty well. Iclicker makes lecture mandatory. NEVER used the textbook, only the registration code for the homework. Tests were a little difficult, but doable. Go to lecture, do the homework, and you'll get an A.
I'll say he's the most inspirational chem prof I have had so far in my life. He makes me study really hard and so far I am doing really well :) I'll take every single class he teaches I SWEAR
Dr. Hoeger is a tremendous lecturer who has obviously been teaching chemistry for years. He is clear and thorough during lecture and has realistic expectations for us on the exams. Has iClicker attendance and performance questions and utilizes ARIS. Class is difficult though as exam averages were around 55% always, but he does curve at the end
Hoeger is intimidating and difficult to approach at first but keep coming to his office hours and you'll find a friend in him. His tests are admittedly fair (students find them difficult because we just can't focus on everything). Listen to his advice before studying for tests and you're golden. He's super funny so attending lectures is good.
i am a very smart person. everyone said 6c would be easy. nope its not. not with him. he made some of the easy stuff . really freaking hard. final was something that when you took. ur like.. wow that made no sense. great guy. but his exams are hard
I loved how he explains everything about your grades and the course. But his final was a bit ambiguous in some of the questions. But overall, a top notch professor
Dr. Hoeger explained ochem thoroughly and intuitively and gave tests that were fair and representative of class content. His lectures even filled in material I missed in 140A/B. As a person, he seems judgmental and condescending, which made it very unpleasant for me to try to talk to him outside of class. Doesn't matter--learned ochem!
Very clear in lectures. He has podcasts for if you miss class but also uses an iClicker for attendence points. If you pay attention youll do just fine.
He only tested what he went over in lecture, so his tests were fair. He made a huge effort to make sure his students understood the material and explained confusing concepts with analogies we could understand. Only used the book once tho, there isn't homework in it...don't need to buy it
I hate how his lectures are mandatory and at 8AM. Otherwise, he's a pretty good professor with fair tests. You'll be fine if you simply do the ARIS homework. He has lots of office hours so even people with other chem professors come to him!
he is really strict for students. you need to spend lots of time doing online homework. however, all things he made you to learn are very useful. he is a good professor.
I started out thinking that I was failing his class, but I ended up with an A :D His first midterm might scare you, but don't give up because the second one and the final will bring you up. Very resourceful. GO TO HIS OFFICE HOURS (including collaborate sessions). Not gonna lie though, he's really scary and sort of patronizing.
Great professor, always comes to class prepared and he even gives extra time to ask questions by 1)coming to class early one day out of the week 2)having collaborate sessions 3)having flexible office hours. He really cares about his students. I'm not going to lie, his class can get challenging but he is always willing to clear up any questions.
Dr. Hoeger is one of my favorite professors here at UCSD. He was really helpful and actually cares for his students. Just have to pay attention during lecture and do the assigned homework and you'll pass the class. The labs were super fun too!
Had him for the first two quarters of the 6 series. The first quarter was great, but this quarter he seemed to be more mean spirited than last. Overall a solid professor--you will definitely learn and understand chemistry from taking his classes if you put in the time and effort outside of class. Definitely read ahead before his lectures.
had him for chem 6a&b. his classes are always 8am...and has clicker for attendance. exams arent easy, but they are reasonable. need to put a lot of time into this class, but this professor definitely helps u learn
He is a great teacher. He tried to scare you a lot but it's not that bad. His test was pretty okay. The TA was very helpful as well. Overall the class was okay. Just don't procrastinate and you will do fine. Btw, he loves prof Ternansky a lot and talk about him all the time. It's pretty funny
You will learn a lot from this class. Exams are difficult, quizzes depend on your TA. Curve is really generous at the end of the class. As long as you try, you'll be fine
It's ridiculously difficult to get an A in this class - the exams are just way hard. The homework is fairly difficult, quizzes are okay, but the exams are killer. He had this "Midterm 3" thing which is an exam you don't actually take - it's your final score divided by 2. So if you do worse on the final than your midterms, you get double screwed.
Dr. Hoeger is the epitome of tough love. He might be intimidating, but he cares about his students and wants them to learn Organic Chemistry. CHEM 140B was a hard class, and Hoeger was harder than the other professors teaching it, but it was well worth it.
He's a hardass. Funny, but exams really test your knowledge. Scales his grades. Podcast, but go to lecture anyways. Exams are setup so average won't be high, & grade distribution will be better in the end, so don't worry if you bombed an exam. 3 quizzes. Drops that or midterm. Adds another "midterm 3" based off of final score.
Since this is a basic introduction of chemistry, Chem 6A students dont't even understand what we are learning. asking others for help that are not in the class will not work. He doesn't use the book but makes you buy MasteringChemistry for online homework. The labs are also hard and post-lab questions become something you have no idea how to do.
Hoeger is a good professor, and he is really tough. He grades with a generous curve, but it's still relatively difficult to get an A in his class. You actually learn stuff in his class, however. Also, his podcasts are really helpful. He's also pretty funny.
The most difficult professor I've had at UCSD, but also one of my favorites...Tests are difficult but he is always there to help during office hours...Listen to the advice he gives during class..he doesn't just say it to sound cool...He helps a lot on figuring out how to study!
Hoeger is a tough teacher and his exams really test your knowledge of the class. He is above average in teaching but he moves too slowly and leaves little time to study before tests. You have to dedicate a lot of time to this class. He only does 8AMs &iClicker for attendance; he does podcasts but the annotated slides from lecture are more helpful.
He's an entertaining lecturer as well as a person but his exams are impossible. Thankfully they curve. Make sure to do problems&review every day, it won't be too bad.
hate labs. Love his jokes.
I don't like this professor at all! 1\His lecture is unclear, too many info in the slides with little explanation. 2\Online HW needs knowledge uncovered in his lecture. 3\Online HW and lecture have a little help with exams, and he don't give valuable practice questions for exams. Advice "MIT 5.111 Principles of Chemical Science" on Youtube
His lectures are very boring and unclear. Also, the homework does not help with the midterms or final. He said that we would need a textbook, but never once did I use. Waste of $45.
While his lectures are boring and in the morning, the information he provides us does help for the exams. I found it helpful to do the homework and read through his annotated slides. As long as you don't procrastinate and study his lectures, you should be fine. Also, you learn a lot in a lecture, so it can be overwhelming.
Lectures are confusing, often boring in the morning, and do not correlate well with exams. I never opened my book either. To do well for exams, still try to review his slides and make sure you review all the homework questions (these will guide you to what you need to learn--aka your actual teacher in chem 6a). Review HW, HW, HW!
He is a very thorough lecturer, because takes is slowly. So slowly that you may fall asleep. If you can maintain consciousness and read, he makes chemistry clear, simple and funny. Keep up, though, because he doesn't hand out grades by any means. Probably the best chem prof on campus. TAKE AT ALL COSTS
Good lecturer, very difficult tests. You'll learn a lot if you put in a lot. Go to office hours for best results; he's very chill. Great prof. You have to put in work for the grade you want - no handouts.
Hoeger's class is not an easy class, you need to work for your grade! Lectures are detailed. He is funny and will go on interesting tangents. iclickers are used for attendance. Midterms are daunting and quizzes depend on your TA (but one midterm or your quizzes will be dropped). Sapling, Extra Probs. They help a lot for your exam! Good Luck!
Professor Hoeger's class is not easy, even with prior chemistry knowledge. My only recommendation would be to not take his classes at 8 AM if at all possible, because it is very easy to fall asleep in his class.
His class could get dull at times, however what he taught in class was extremely helpful for the tests. His midterm and final were multiple guess, so it was easy enough that I got an 98% in the class. Doing the sapling homework is extremely helpful. Good teacher overall with a good sense of humor.
Dr. Hoeger is a decent lecturer, maybe I was biased because I had him at 8am and couldn't pay attention that early! When I did pay attention, he was very clear and thorough. His tests are HARD no matter how much you study. He put questions on his tests that no one knew in order to set the curve. Overall very difficult class, very time consuming!
His class is hard if you do not have prior chemistry knowledge. He gives a lot of free points with the Sapling Hw and performance and attendance points. For quizzes, go to discussion if you want an A. Tests are fair, and he is a great lecturer. I re-listened to his podcasts to study for his exams and did really well on his exams.
Dr. Hoeger is a boss. He really cares about whether or not students learn, and although he may seem intimidating he is always willing to help. He is without a doubt one of the best professors at UCSD!
Honestly, compared to my current 6A professor, Hoeger kicks so much ass and is a great lecturer. He made us learn farther than Chem 4 and that is why I believe 6A isn't as bad. Really helpful and makes his lectures fun. Only bad kart is that it was at 8am.
Hoeger is an awesome teacher! Even though he is hard, you will definitely end the class knowing your stuff. I truly learn from his lectures, and he is actually a pretty funny guy. Take him - its worth it!!!
Dr.H's class is very difficult but not impossible if you're willing to put time and effort. He understands that Org Chem is very tough to understand for students. I am very grateful that I learned a lot from him. He is awesome.
this course is tough but it gets you prepared for CHEM 6 A B and C. I recommend this professor he really cares about his students.
Hoeger is an awesome professor. He seems unapproachable, but he definitely knows his material and how to teach it to students efficiently, both in a lecture and office hour setting. His class isn't easy, and time commitment play a HUGE role in your understanding of the material. It's no easy class, but what's learned definitely stays for awhile.
Cool dude. Can be strict but overall great teacher. He teaches you the basics of chemistry for this course. Take him.
Hoeger is the best organic prof, hands down. The trick is to treat it more like a math class where you have to do some problems and have some exposure to the material every day. Listen to his lectures, go to his early morning office hour sessions, and do the homework problems/TA worksheets and quizzes. Should take the fear factor out of OChem.
Hoeger's a great teacher, everything is clear and he holds early morning question sessions for everyone. If you study the powerpoints and do the homework you should be fine. He's also hilarious in class and really nice and helpful if you talk to him during office hours. One of the greatest professors I've ever had!
Very difficult professor who is surprisingly reasonable. He does teach well, but having an 8 am in GBH is less than ideal. He does sometimes ask questions that you have never seen before, but that is typically reserved for multiple choice questions. His free responses are very fair and a good way of gauging knowledge.
I had him for 6A as well, and I found myself working just as hard. His tests are rather difficult, but he gives you so much opportunity to boost up your grade. He is an entertaining lecturer because he incorporates storytime and jokes. My TA, Corey, was also very good, so he helped a lot in clearing up the concepts. Overall, GREAT professor.
Easy B- by going to class and doing iClicker and also homework checks.... I took him for B & C, and got a B- for both. By doing homework and iclickers it shows you try in his class and even doing below average on everything (quizzes, exams...) I still got a B-.
Despite taking this class over the summer(twice as fast) professor Hoeger taught really well. This was the first time I actually enjoyed chemistry. His passion for chem really shows in his teaching. He's always there if you need help. Very good experience.
Professor Hoeger is amazing. You can see his commitment to students success. His class is hard but paying attention and doing homework easily makes you pass. My grade was a B. I highly recommend !
Very clear, very helpful during office hours, but can come off very strong and intimidating. Deep down, he really wants you to pass, but more so, he wants you to learn. Would recommend.
Prof. Hoeger cares for his students and wants everyone to pass. Tries to make the class entertaining by saying random jokes throughout the lecture. Has recorded podcasts so if you miss a day you can listen to what you miss. The tests are somewhat hard and studying is required. He has a clear voice and usually explains the concepts thoroughly.
If you are interested in chemistry take him. However, if you are not interested, his class is very difficult. His lectures a long, but he interjects jokes and anecdotes. I found his test very difficult, but he does curve generously and wants his students to pass.
He had confusing slides that needed much more clarifications. He didn't pace his time well so it was really rushed at times. It would be helpful if he had example problems. His tests are really hard.
Dr. Hoeger is a good professor ! He explain well and have a tons of funny stories to tell ! But be careful, his exams and final are hard as hell ! If you have a good chemistry foundation or you are interested in chemistry then take him, you will learn alot ! Trust me ! He will make you learn !
He emphasizes in lecture what's important during the exam or what you should focus on when you study. I like this professor as he explains the concepts well and you can tell he cares about his students. Exams are hard, as they because it truly tests you on the understanding of the material.
Professor Hoeger is a fun teacher in lecture, but a tough grader everywhere else. Though his lectures are thorough, his tests are much harder than the examples he gives in lectures. The labs add more hard work to what was already tough. Overall, he is a great guy, but if chemistry isn't your strongest subject, the course is going to be tough.
Dr Hoeger is a great lecturer, his lectures are interesting, and he could express his ideas clearly. He used iClicker and online homework, and his exams are straightfoward, so generally this is a easy class. Besides, he also gave bonus points for whom did homework well. However, the labs are not very easy, be sure to pick out a good partner.
If he had been in a subject I liked or even needed, I would have liked him. He's tough on students but works with you to help you pass his class - curve is very generous. Only problem is if you aren't fast at picking up subjects, his lectures blow you by because he goes through each topic so quickly.
Hoeger is a really cool guy. Get to know him in OH. I did and am so happy. Got a AB+ (B and C) so the curve is super generous because ended up with a 60%! He really knows his stuff and if you put in time and do the homework like 3 times each I don't see why you can't get a B or above for sure. Study and really try to understand whats happing!
Hoeger's lectures are the best example of the meme Class: 2+24 Test: with two sheep flying, one yellow, the other headed right, how much does a pound of asphalt cost, given that the cow is 10 years old? More seriously: he teaches the general concepts, but his exams are a thousand times harder than that, and the wording is vague. It's ridiculous.
The thing about Dr. Hoeger is that in the beginning of the quarter, he really wants his students to work hard so that they really understand the material, which is why the first midterm is the hardest, to make sure students students study for the next and his final. His final always turn out to be easier than midterms. Took him twice for gen chem.
Before taking the class, I was incredibly intimidated by the ratings and comments for the professor. Yes, the class is tough but it is not impossible to do well in. Do practice problems, keep up with the homework, and ask help when you need it.
His tests were nothing like his lectures & they were much harder than Sapling. He tells you to study something & he'll put the exact opposite on the tests. He lectures well but I'm not sure why he expects us to attend bc his lecture is NOTHING like what he tests on. He was the opposite of everything I've seen here. Cool guy but I wouldn't take him
Hoeger is a great professor. He explains the material really well, he is very funny and will keep you awake (I had him for a 8am). Go to his office hours. Go over your midterms after they are graded. His curve is very generous. The final was hard, but nothing impossible.
He puts too much materials, relevant or irrelevant, in his powerpoint, so I don't have enough time to understand and take notes. His explanations are sometimes confusing. His exams are not very hard, they are just OK I guess.
I took Professor Hoeger for CHEM 6A and B. Really difficult class. He emphasizes to do the Practice Problems and doing them really helps. He really wants his students to pass thus his curve is very generous. I failed both midterms and ended up getting a B. Final is super easy. Definitely Recommend him!
Dr. Hoeger is one of my favorite professor. He cares about students and he is a athlete fan. He often has 3-hour office hours on MWF. Whenever I have problems, I go to OH and he can explain them in good detail and clarity. Tests are fair but require a lot of thinking and preparing. Do sapling homework and you will be fine.
Dr. Hoeger made me consider changing my major to chemistry from bio with his stories of working at the Salk Institute. Makes the class laugh a lot. Unfortunately uses clickers. IMPORTANT! He's a notorious test writer though, so prep USING HIS SLIDES. The book is good for the core concepts and some practice, but he tests on HIS SLIDES.
He's a good concept guy. He doesn't really do examples. He believes in double penalties, and if you get the number incorrect in a free response the most you'll get is 50%.
Between him and albazati, I picked Hoeger because he is hard and a great teacher. If you are going to grad school in chem or doing research, take him! he teaches a lot of things that are not in the book - the practical side of chemistry. He would tell you what happens in the lab.I thought his tests were straight forward and hes NOT ashardasuthink
Pros, Awesome lectures, clear to understand, and hilarious to boot. You will learn a lot, outside of what is intended too. His knowledge of chemistry is quite amazing. Also very likable and makes class entertaining with crazy stories. Cons: Hard class, more so than the others. I got easy A's in 6a 6b, struggled here. Beware for your grade.
Same person here that wrote the other review. But here's advice for the class, He WILL test out of his lectures and powerpoints. Extra assigned problems are useful, but the hints he drops in lectures are extremely relevant to what will be on the test. His first few tests will be fast and hard, so don't give up cuz the final will be worth more!
Not the best of professors at UCSD, would have avoided him if I had the chance to.
Avoid, he really makes you work for it. I would try a new professor. Johnson is nicer, but she used to be his student. They test the same way and similar teaching style.
I liked the way Hoeger taught a lot. He explains everything very well and he doesn't test on stuff that he hasn't explicitly talked about. If you need help with something he will help, and also ask your TA.
Taking him as a freshmen made me think college was hell. I do remember crying one time when I went to his office hours which must have been awkward for him. I recommend not missing a class so you can get as many clicker points as possible, go to his office hours, and go to Oasis tutoring. I learned a lot from him about not giving up, lol.
After taking this class I feel prepared to take the 6 series. His tests are kind of hard but as long as you do the homework and a lot of practice problems while studying, it shouldn't be a problem. He's pretty thorough in lecture, but he does have a tendency to not go over many examples.
I took him my first quarter here, and I was definitely intimidated to the point that I didn't wanna talk to him in person. BUT in person, he is very nice and even sweet, plus he has free candy in his office. If you're struggling with stoichiometry, talk with him in office hours-- he'll save you.
Dr. Hoeger's class is no cakewalk, but he is super helpful and gives you exactly what you need to study. He is approachable at office hours. Midterms were based off the Sapling homework. Make sure you study his slides, and the book is highly recommended to read! Final was easier than the midterms. Dr. Hoeger gives many opportunities for help.
Many students considered him a bit mean, but his humor helped me pay attention in his 8AM lectures. His curve was crazy effective which my grade greatly appreciated. Very kind in office hours.
He's often not very clear, and he sorta expects you to know/teach yourself everything. His tests are waaay harder than the homework, but he makes up for that by having a decent curve. I probably got like a C's on the tests, but I ended up with an A- since everyone else failed too. If you actually want to learn, I wouldn't recommend him.
Hoeger is a good professor. He is probably the most clear professor when it comes to explaining things. His exams are pretty tough, but his curves are amazing. Just do the work and things will fall in place. It's much harder to get an A than a B, though.
Hoeger's class can seem daunting, but if you go to lectures, do the homework, and at least manage to pass all the tests and quizzes, grading and the curve are very generous. He's very strict on the syllabus, and his tests are tough, but he gives you some room for error by dropping your lowest score before calculating your final grade. Very nice man
Thought I was gonna fail the class because I did so bad on the first midterm, but I tried harder and also he really fights for/wants students to pass!
Make sure you really grasp the material before entering each exam. Lectures are very elaborate and clear. I came out of the class with a really strong grasp of chem.
He seems like a tough grader, but he's VERY fair. Highly recommend. Teaching style is with powerpoint and thank goodness for podcasts to look back on if you miss something in class.
I took Chem 4 just to refresh chemistry knowledge I took sophomore year in high school. I thought the class would be somewhat easy but if you don't take this class seriously you will most likely have a VERY hard time. He assigns HW and labs every week, which often times are very confusing. His tests are the worst though. However, he does curve well
This course is not as easy as you might think. It covers some part from Chem 6A and 6B, and most importantly, the hard part. I would say some portion of this course is very different from what is taught in high school. A tough grader. Labs, homework problems, and exams are usually confusion. Do study it.
Short temper and not easy to talk to. I struggled so much to understand concepts he expected us to already be familiar with. He is not a great lecturer. He does not explain things as they should be explained for a beginner chem class. If you haven't been exposed to the material before, you will struggle. Whole 6 series was easier than this class.
Dr. Hoeger really knows his chemistry and makes the information very easy to understand. The midterms and tests are difficult and very math heavy but if you understand the material and do the homework you should be fine. I would definitely take him for other chem classes in the future.
Good teacher. Explains concepts pretty well. Tests are pretty hard though, but doing the homework (which is collected during quizzes) really helps. Has clicker questions during lecture.
Amazing professor. Content is really challenging and preps you well for harder college courses. Really helps you get on top of your material.
If you're not very strong in Chem and need to take one of his lower division classes as a requirement, I strongly recommend taking Hoeger! He is very well aware that most of his students in there are only there for the requirement and are non-science major students, so he really takes that into consideration with his grading. Plus, CHEAT SHEETS!
The most reasonable professor out there. Nice person, incredible teacher, awesome lecturer. Hard tests, but generous curve.
Prof Hoeger is feared for some reason but after having to take CHEM 140B with him because of schedule issues, Im really glad I did. His lectures are very clear and make it easy to understand the material. Make sure to know all the reactions for each chapter, they are like 60% of the the tests. Mechanisms/synthesis can be hard but not worth much.
Dr. Hoeger is the best Chem professor on campus. He is very strict but his lectures are phenomenal and he is straightforward. His tests are fair and his curve at the end is great. Take him if you can!
He really goes into detail in his lectures to make sure you understand the material. He also drops either your midterm, quizzes, final or adjusted final. There are 3 quizzes that are in discussion, and it depends on your TA on the difficulty. He's really talkative and helpful during office hours so go to him! Just do as you're told and its all good
spends a lot of time going off topic and talking about his personal life. tests are extremely hard and then he tries to reassure you that he'll curve a lot and most people just end up with C's. for 140C he taught the class as if it was 140B
Dr. Hoeger is strict, but his lectures are clear. Exams and the final are very difficult. Also, grading is very tough. Doing homework problems should help you do well in the class. Make sure you know 140B material because you're going to see it a lot during the course. He uses powerpoint and there is podcast.
Your grade is Hoegar's class is entirely up to you. If you put in the time and work, you'll end up with an A. If you don't.. good luck. Gives you all the resources you need and is accessible/helpful during office hours. He can seem tough if it's your first class with him, but he's not that bad. Uses a lot of scare tactics to make you work hard.
Ochem is not easy at all and his lectures haven't helped me to pass any of his midterms. I had to do all the work from reading to doing homework and did not end up with the grade I wanted. Only 4 people in the class got As based on the grade history tool. He is better than others but you gotta kick butt for an A.
I took his OChem my first freshman quarter. He taught the materials fast, but he made a lot of cautions to ensure we understand how to deal with the problems. The curves are generous: You can get about 10% for every raw scores on exams and quizzes. He also has graded homework which is really helpful and provides extra bonus to my final grade.
Hoeger has a unique personality that usually leaves students either hating or liking him, but he is very knowledgeable on the material. The last few weeks were a bit rushed and a good TA helps your chances of earning a good grade. Grading is clear and fair; section grades are adjusted which helps! There is online homework only and attendance checks
Hoeger is definitely tough but he is very fair. He goes a bit fast in lectures but then if you go to his office hours he provides a lot of helpful tips and explanation. DO the extra hw problems because they really help. If you put in time you will be rewarded.
Organic chem is not easy but Hoeger is a great teacher and I found myself actually understanding chemistry. Go to class, ask questions, do hw (he uses online hw and it's kind of a pain) and you'll be fine. I definitely recommend his class!
Hoeger is a very straightforward professor and he makes it very clear on what you should know for his exams. His exams are fair and are representative of the material. Im glad I took his class because he makes learning ochem easy (or at least as easy as it gets)
So I entered chem 4 first quarter of fresham year thinking Id build a good foundation for chemistry. I thought wrong. As soon as the drop deadline passed, the pace tripled and none of the exams were even doable at our level. He will teach you something in lecture, youll do the reading, but the exams are 10 steps further than what your knowledge.
Hoeger knows that ochem is hard and gives generous curve with a huge B range to compensate. However, if you want an A, you need to be at the top of the class. Being above average on exams doesn't mean anything unless you're naturally getting Bs or As without the curve.
Although Dr. Hoeger was difficult in comparison to some of the other professors, he gave me a more comprehensive understanding of the material. He posts all his unannotated lectures ahead of time online so I would recommend writing them before lecture, then spending time during lecture writing down his verbal notes.
it influences my enthusiasm to study chem again!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!
so I never learned chemistry in high school so I took chem 4 that way I can get a understanding of it. Tbh that class took my soul, I was dying. There is lab and the tests are pretty wild, you need to study ALOT. The curve is nice though, also when went I went into 6A it was hella easy so chem 4 does prepare you.
He's a great lecturer, hilarious with his stories and asides. His tests may be difficult, but doing the recommended textbook problems help a lot. The final (all multiple choice) is much better than the two midterms, which include tricky FRQ. Work hard, and remember textbook is king.
AVOID AT ALL COSTS. so difficult. class avg was a low C. goes over so many details in lecture that its hard to study for exams which only test on few concepts. dropped the class after I failed the midterms bc I knew it was way harder than it should be and got an A with Prof Albizati meanwhile learning ochem so much more intuitively
He was a great professor and available outside of class a lot. He never tried to trick you, especially on the finals. I'd take him again.
40B is a hard class that requires a lot of time and effort. Hoegers lectures are often information heavy rather than explaining why the reaction happens. A lot of on your own learning. But if you take the time to learn the material and do a ton of practice problems then you'll pass the class.
Absolutely phenomenal Organic Chem teacher. Don't take him to receive an A, seeing as they are hard to come by. Rather take him to understand and learn organic chemistry. He is truly wonderful at lecturing and speaks with authority. He is incredibly fair and at times funny. At his worst he is arrogant, at his best he is inspirational. Take him!
As a chemistry major freshman, I feel really lucky taking his OChem series. He's respected and knowledgeable. His classes are work heavy but not impossible. Definitely take him if you intended to learn real chemistry!
I respect Dr. Hoeger and I certainly agree that he can teach organic chemistry well. However, his teaching style was just not for me. I did well in 40A/B but found myself feeling overwhelmed and discouraged in 40C. Provides a vast range of info in his slides which makes it hard to prepare for exams. You will learn alot, but don't expect an A.
TAKE HIM IF YOU CAN! Dr. Hoeger is a phenomenal professor who will definitely give you a solid foundation in organic. His tests are just as -- if not more -- difficult as Johnson's but he has a very generous curve. Learned loads this quarter and had quite a few laughs during lecture. Overall Hoeger is a very funny & knowledgeable prof worth taking
I took Hoeger for Chem 4, so there was less focus on material and more focus on general coverage and introductory labs. Very useful for the Chem 6 series, as I've never taken high school chem and finished Chem 6A and B with an A. He might come off as a tough professor, but his lectures are clear and he's pretty nice outside of class.
He's a good professor; I'd recommend him. He gives clear lectures where he explains each concept in detail. His tests aren't too bad either; they cover the big concepts you go over in class. Once in a while though there is a question that asks about some random thing said in lecture, so print the power points and write down extra details he says.
Pretty tough and intimidating guy. He is funny in a sick kind of way, but deep inside his mean grumpy temper he seems to be a nice guy, I went to his office hours once and got scared and left. He knows what he's talking about and gets annoyed when inexperienced ,superficial students question his knowledge. He'll make you learn Ochem. You will learn
Hoeger's classes are crazy hard, but I definitely learned ochem very well. He is intimidating, mean, and overconfident to the point of absurdity, but he knows his stuff and reviews material well. Go to class- he often turns the podcast off/writes on the board. Averages are low (60 for midterms and 50 for final), so don't take Hoeger for an easy A.
His class was extremely difficult because he does so in depth. Without podcast I would have been a dead man. I somehow got 5 points above avg on the first midterm and 11 points above on the second. But the final was 90% material that was crammed into the last three lectures (mechanisms, synthesis, etc.) and I was not prepared at all.
Definitely one of the harder professors you can take. His tests usually has one that has to deal with something we haven't learned yet. You really need to be on top of things for his class. If you take the time to organize yourself and really study as the course goes along rather than cramming before the midterm you can pull off a high B or A-.
He has clicker questions that do count for attendance and because there isn't a textbook, his lectures are the only source of information that you know for sure is going to be on the test. Tests are hard but the curve is insane so you just have to do better than your peers to get a decent grade. The labs take a lot of your time too.
I knew this class was going to be a tough course, and Dr. Hoeger is a knowledgeable professor. However, not only are his tests difficult, but his cocky demeanor makes him unapproachable and his comments during lecture were often unprofessional and borderline rude. I would not recommend his class solely because of his conduct.
Dr. Hoeger is a great prof. He is an absolutely hilarious guy and is really friendly although he does get try to make himself seem harsh at times. His teaching style is very PowerPoint based, and it does help a lot for both doing the homework and passing his exams. In order to get an A in this class, you need to do a lot more than hw.
I. hate. him. No exaggeration, I guess his teaching style just doesnt fit me, and I feel like no matter how hard I work I still cant get a satisfying result. Personal opinion, no offense intended.
His exams are graded tough (occasional partial credit), but are very fair. If you go to lecture with the ppt slides downloaded/printed out and do HW/practice problems to fill in gaps in your knowledge, you will pass. Also, write down ALL the reactions on the cheat sheet. I did average on my first midterm, but doing that for my second got me an 100.
He's fine for gen chem but absolutely do not take him for ochem. I feel like he prepared me "okay" for 40B but the class itself is so beyond stressful it had me question whether the class was worth the stress. He also makes unnecessarily rude comments which just increased my stress and anxiety. Overall, wouldn't recommend him AT ALL.
Just take him!!! Dont let his rep of being hard scare you away, because his curve is hella thicc so that his average ends up being the same or higher than the other easy profs most of the time, except you learn way more. He makes OChem enjoyable with his clear lecture style and dark sense of humor. Seriously hilarious guy. You wont regret it.
Hoeger's class is very demanding and stressful, especially during the first and final weeks. Even after understanding the lectures and homework, the exams may still catch you off-guard. Overall he genuinely wants students to learn and did tried to provide a "fair" learning experience. Not recommended for people seeking a softer/ happier quarter.
Going to lecture is required, but in my opinion, he is a good lecturer. I thought that there were a lot of expectations for the labs, but overall they weren't too hard. Midterms and final are long, but not unfair.
Hoeger is hard, but I found his slides very informational and his lectures very helpful. I relied on the book and practice problems to help me on his tests, which are very out-of-the-box sometimes. Be aware of very hard multiple choice questions. I found him to be a good general chemistry teacher.
Prof. Hoeger is brilliant and teaches material well. Lectures were pretty entertaining and very helpful. Hoeger was very accessible outside of class and provided a lot fo additional study materials. The lab was very time consuming and my biggest complaint about the course. Tests were pretty hard, but there is a fair curve.
Do NOT read the textbook! Only skim before lectures, but study using the lecture slides and by doing the homework problems from the syllabus. His quizzes and midterms usually have questions that are very similar to these. The office hours are super useful and he curves. Could've been a great teacher if he didn't spend the first 15 mins ranting.
One of the most misunderstood professors! Dr. H is an amazing professor who genuinely cares for the success of his students. Yes, his class may be tough and he may seem intimidating but professors like him know how to prepare students for the next level (ochem).I took him for Chem 4 and 6C and he really makes class interesting and engaging.
I took this class without any prior experience in chemistry and still did fairly well. Hoeger definitely makes the class fun and keeps students engaged in lecture. He also has a generous curve so getting a 60% on one of his tests will get you a B. I hope to take him again for OCHEM.
He just has this attitude that makes you feel like he doesn't want you to succeed... like he wants to prove that his class is just the hardest. He has some funny moments but he's overall pretty mean. The way he talks to students is like he is completely superior and has no respect for us. He wants to weed you out.
Generous curve. He goes through things pretty quickly in lecture so be sure to review anything you missed. Read the textbook (!!!); makes hw and tests manageable. You don't have to go to every lecture bc he gives double iClicker points, but I recommend going as much as possible; he's a good lecturer. Lots of resources to help you succeed; use them.
may be a good prof for Ochem, but for chem4 not so much. Sped through topics w/o much explanation making easy topics difficult. Labs do not connect to what is being lectured. Book is useless. If you self study you can pass, but do not rely on lecture notes.
He is the worst chemistry teacher I have ever met. He always says a lot of useless words in class and assign so many homework.
Funny and teaches very well despite going fast. Could be tough if you don't pay attention in the lecture or don't put effort into your homework but the workload was manageable. His class was definitely more enjoyable than my current chem 6B class. Would recommend if you want a solid foundation.
His exams are very fair. I've never met a more fair professor. He also doesn't necessarily have the highest expectations for us either, he teaches what will be on the exam and doesn't throw any curve balls. His class is difficult purely due to the vast amount of curriculum that is covered, however I am really glad that I took his class. Worth it!
Let's get straight to the point. Fair exam? Yes. Harsh grader? Sort of, but not really. Lab class grading? Not the best, just DON'T FAIL. Should you do homework? YES. PLEASE review lecture slides as well, you need to know how to apply practically and theoretically. When I say he loves stoichiometry, I mean he LOVES it. No wonder he teaches OChem.
Pretty much everything you need to know is on podcast. Homework assignments help solidify understanding (assuming you don't just look online for the answers) and tests have a big curve. I did not need to read textbook at all, did just fine relying on podcasts. Hilarious guy, a touch of dark humor and overall keeps things interesting during lec.
Probably the best chem prof I've had so far. Although he can be scary/ intimidating, he really makes sure you understand the material. He explains everything really well, tests can be hard but fair w/ a fair curve. Attendance is mandatory and performance points resemble pop quiz questions. You do need to put in effort & do book problems to do well.
Professor Hoeger is one of the best organic professor at UCSD. I highly recommend him, he carefully explains in detail everything you need to know about o-chem. People who say he is mean isn't true he is strict, but very funny. You will also obtain helpful life lessons from him. I learned more from his class than any other class I have taken here.
Dr. Hoeger has been my favorite chem professor at UCSD. His office hours are extremely helpful, although he can be intimidating. His lectures are clear and organized and flow in a logical manner through the material. As long as you work through the homework and examples he does in lecture, you'll do fine. He's a tough grader but so worth it.
Professor Hoeger's class was really difficult, and his tests were really hard too, but he curves pretty heavily on almost everything, so I'm pretty sure most people got a good grade in his class.
Hes not bad at teaching 40A but he makes it very hard to enjoy his class. He really isnt very encouraging. He assigns a huge amount of homework and his second midterm is pretty hard (the first one is fair). If you take him just make sure you have enough time for his sapling assignments.
This man is nothing short of phenomenal. I came in as a lost student after 40a, but thanks to dr. Hoeger I was able to turn this around and got back to back As in 40b and 40c. I dont get where the hate comes from(??) If you are about your craft and are willing to follow whatever he says (trust me he doesn't waste any words), u will do amazing.
Dr. Hoeger is one of the better professors I have had at UCSD so far. Going into Ochem I thought it was going to be the worst thing ever, but Dr. Hoeger changed that. He teaches the material well and explains the reason behind all the mechanisms and reactions. He is also a fair grader. I highly recommend taking him for the Ochem series.
this professor is very rude when it comes to the logistics. doesn't explain the concepts that well. watch organic chem tutor on youtube and you'll be fine. waste of $
For summer session online, this class was a constant grind. The HW is the same amount as a normal quarter so it was an insane time sink; be diligent about it. The prerecorded lectures were fine in my opinion, but are loaded with info. Look at his old exams he posts, they help a lot with the actual exams. Overall, it really was what I expected.
Will use scare tactics to make you study. Watch organic chemistry tutor on YouTube to learn Bc Hoegers lectures are very concept heavy with little to no examples. Exams are fair. Theres a thicccc curve so dont be scared if your exam scores are low
Prof Hoeger is a bit savage and uses scare tactics to get you to study. I was intimidated by him but he just really wants all his students to succeed. HW and quizzes were really helpful. Exams were fair and weren't that bad. Thick curve and I think he's the best ochem prof I have ever taken at UCSD. His teachings have helped me on the MCAT too.
If we weren't online, I'd totally take Hoeger's class for 40B. his exams are now ridiculously done in order to curb cheating, which wouldn't be the case in in-person classes. The exams (inhibits you from skipping around through questions) is the sole reason I won't take him again. He is a great prof overall, but I know my scores wouldve been higher
Probably a good researcher who has a lot of knowledge about his field. However, one fo the worst professors I've had in terms of general attitude and approach to online learning. If there is another prof. with good ratings, take them. If not, just don't listen to his ramblings and threats and you'll do fine.
Maybe in a stardard setting Prof. Hoeger is great, but he made 0 attempt to make accomodations during the global pandemic. Be prepared to watch lectures that are years old, slow, drift off and ramble on, and are 2 hrs long. Difficult to reach, and he bases your grade almost entirely off 2 quizzes, the midterm, and the final.
Unfortunately professor Hoeger's way of teaching was horrible in my opinion. I got nothing out of the lecture videos and overall made my first year experience a pain. This class was absolutely awful because I felt like I learned nothing at all, and this is being said by someone who is a science fanatic. I should have just taken chem 6A.
His lectures are stitched together from recordings of his class in 2016, but they are clear and does the job. However, he amount of homework and the difficulty of it makes me not want to study chemistry ever again.
He has such a bad attitude towards online learning. When students ask questions he gives so much attitude. I learning the material through SI Session and watching the OChem Tutor. His "lectures" were old podcasts from 2017!! He didn't even bother teaching us the material in real-time.
All lectures were asynchronous and they were 2016 podcasts (lecture wording can be weird so hope you have a good TA). His class was based on the homework and tests/quizzes with quizzes being much harder than tests. He won't curve until the end and we were basically all in the dark about overall grades the whole quarter.
uses his previous year podcast lecs to teach. He is very lazy and did not bother to cut out the parts he writes on the board. So you will be just sitting there and watching 4 hours lecs that make no sense. Also, the 4 hours lecs have to be downloaded which takes a lot to data. He does not let students finish their questions & talks over them...
Hw & lectures don't help. I watched orgo tutor to get through his class. His tests are difficult nothing like practice or lectures. He will be rude and disrespectful towards you. Do yourself a big favor and take some other teacher.
he uses podcast videos from 2016/2017 that are long and make no sense really... I have heard bad stories from him from students who even took him in person, but I had no choice but to take him. He has such bad attitude, and anger issue, he will make no effort into teaching... and his quizzes and tests are very very very difficult, don't take him.
He does not care for his student, uses old lectures that can be up to four hours long. Tests were heavy nothing you will "learn" from your own teaching lol. his attitude was unbearable, grades were not posted till after quarter and we were all in the dark the whole time... I wish ucsd would do something about him...
He gave us his recorded lectures from 2 years ago: couldn't see the black board and super unorganized . Had to self teach myself everything. Our class averages were so low and we expected a curve to make up for it, but we got barely any curve. On top of that, he created a super unwelcoming environment which made me scared of him. DO NOT TAKE HIM
DO NOT TAKE He used his recorded lectures from 2011 didn't teach anything. had to self teach myself because his lectures were extremely unorganized He uses extreme scare tactics which makes students feel super unwelcome and stressed 24/7, would get HBP when I watched his lectures Averages were so low but he barely gave us a curve
The course itself was fine. The professor however frequently posted late lectures and did not post grades until the final was already over-- confusing. Do not bother reaching out to him because his response will be unhelpful/unaccommodating. Be prepared to be frustrated if you have an issue you need to take up with him especially concerning grades.
Good guy but I had to learn everything through youtube (watch Organic Chemistry tutor). He had his exams structured so that once you finish a question, you cant go back to it, and as someone with test anxiety, it made things a lot harder than it should've been. However, his IA's are the best, they always do their best to help students understand.
-taught for so long that he gained undeserved confidence in his teaching skills -Has a stubbornness and an audacity that hampers him from fixing the problems, elaborated by others, that makes his online teaching flop -How he taught us, or rather how little, in online learning betrays how little he can care for students -better in office hours
Hw doesnt help much, tests are different and hard. He expected a lot from the students who are taking ochem for the first time... on the other hand, he didnt even put any effort into making new lectures for us. Lectures are disorganized, old, and long. He has a very bad attitude. Makes the class very unpleasant and harder than it should be...
Take another professor who wont make you feel stupid for asking questions, someone who doesnt have such attitude towards students for no reason and actually puts effort into teaching and making online lectures. Online classes are hard as is, and he made it 10x worse.
By far one of the worst professors Ive had so far during COVID online class. Im not sure how he was in class, but he is pretty terrible. His lecture videos are 2-4 hours long each with little to no care put into them. The homework assignments are incredibly long, with very little time to actually do them. The exam test your speed, not knowledge.
Horrible professor. Lectures were confusing and the tests were 100000x harder than anything covered in the lecture and included many questions on material not covered during class. Worst professor I've had at ucsd.
He uses old podcasts and lecture slides from past in-person classes which makes everything very complicated for an online class. He does not provide answers to his practice tests and actual exams. The tests are tough and he does not allow you to go back to questions that you have already answered.
He reuses his old lectures and it's SUPER long. He doesn't give answers to the practice exams and his actual exams are more difficult than it can be. I can tell that he is a really smart professor, but that's all the good stuff I can say about the class. He also didn't allow you to go back to the questions on quiz/tests which is frustrating.
I love Professor Hoeger, he does have fairly complicated grading criteria however he is very generous on curves. His tests and quizzes are hard and you really have to learn those knowledge good enough to utilize them. He replies to email very fast and he really cares about his student, I give him a solid 5.
Yes his tests are hard, and yes his lectures are long, but he gives his students TONS of resources to learn. However, its up to YOU to take the initiative to use all the resources he gives. He doesnt publish the answers to his exams but DOES go over them in his office hours the following week after the exam. Very organized professor as well!
It was nice to be able to pace yourself taking him online. He was very accommodating with exams and tests. Huge curves.
Dr. Hoeger is a great lecturer; it's clear that he knows what he is teaching. However, the lectures a long and so it gets boring quickly. I took advantage of all the resources he provided and it all paid off as I was able get an A in the class. His curves are generous, but THIS CLASS IS NOT AN EASY A. Look for a diff prof if you want an easier A.
Long lectures with lots of homework, but I feel like I learned. Overall I didn't do great on quizzes/exams, but there is a huge curve (cut off to a C or P was 55% for us). He knows what he's talking about, but it can be a lot. Definitely not an easy class, but if you try you'll be ok.
Very accommodating during this COVID time. His test was better than expected and he had a huge curve!
The lectures he gives for the online class are just the podcasts from 2010, where he would write stuff on the board and physically reference things, so on podcast you can only just stare at the slides and hear the sounds of the chalk and the board while he says "this, this, and that." Lectures are also unorganized with no examples at all.
WORST teacher/professor I have ever had in my lifetime. Only spent ONE SINGULAR hour a week actually working with students in his QandA section where he would yell and degrade you for asking questions. His lectures were recorded from 2010 and stitched together into 3.5 hour vids each, and he references equations on a blackboard you can't even see.
Professor Hoeger was super nice and his lectures were amazing. I found I really understood the material after he lectures. He gives a LOT of homework though. Like 50 problems a chapter each week. I was kind of scared of him but he is overall a funny good guy.
Not prepared for online teaching at all. He was all over the place schedule wise and unnecessarily rude when asking questions. Would NOT recommend.
He doesnt seem like he cared about students at all. No matter what circumstances we have due to COVID, the syllabus says no exceptions, so unless you're dying, don't bother email 'cause he'll just ignore you. Hw and Quizzes are still due during the day before final, so you know, focus on those instead of your other finals instead.
I took 6B with Dr. Hoeger during the winter. The pre-recorded lectures were long and this class required a lot of my time. The exams were HARD but he is generous with his curve. He provided a lot of practice materials (DO THEM!). I was pushed to do well in this class and I do not regret taking his class. Not an easy A, but def worth the effort.
The class content itself was easy, but the class was difficult to get through since he talks about himself (and not in a fun way) so much. I took this class 2019 fall, and I remember part of our graders were clicker questions, so you had to be there in person at 8am. Also, for some reason, he chose to do his Q&A session from 7am, before class.
I took this class fall 2019. It was not that difficult but I do not like him as a person. He is arrogant and disrespectful. He shames students that ask questions that he thinks are "dumb" and did not explain the concepts very well. I would not recommend taking him. He gave us a small notecard to use notes on the final which was nice.
