Hard class, but months later you will realize how much you learned, like it or not. cares about students but allows no room for BS.
Be prepared to read, study, study, study. Not a considerate individual towards his students. Unprofessional! Thinks his the big shot and can say and do anything just because his the teach! Wasted his time telling jokes, instead of focusing on material.
This guy rocks!!! Johansson knows his stuff and can explain it in a way that makes it interesting. Great humor and fun class makes for an awesome semester, you have to take bio anyway, might as well have a cool Professor!!!
the most fun I've ever had working so hard. I remember everything from that class and he is hilarious which makes it even better. He let us be really creative with our projects and was very supportive.
the class had a lot of work but johansson gave his students all the material they needed to get an A. The class was interesting and he was very knowledgeable.
Nut case. Talks down to people.
Mr. Johansson rules. He knows what he talks about and if anyone tries to prove him wrong, he will prove you wrong although he does respect you as an individual. I highly recommend Mr.Johansson to students who needs to take Biology 3 you will definitely learn out from this class no doubt about it!!
Only take him if you enjoy being degraded and listening to him tell others what a waste they are. He thinks he is the smartest guy around and has no problem telling you - all the time! This guy has some serious problems.
Johansson knows his stuff - and has great passion for his subject. His big deal is accountability - don't expect to excuse your way through the class. Follow directions, use his reading assignments, go to class - you will learn lots (though you wont realize it till later. Funny -
Johansson can seem a bit strange and zealous at first, but once you get used to it, class can be interesting.
Ask him to tell his story about Santa Claus being a ****, the Catholic church, reindeer, magic mushrooms and mistletoe - it was one of the most surreal, esoteric rants I have heard in my life. Other than that I learned a lot.
I loved the class and had a good time in it. Mr. Johanson is the funniest man I've met. I will never forget his tangents on fast people in wheelchairs.
very interesting teacher
Prof. Johansson at first seems to be one of the professors who tries to mix humor and teaching, but in poor attempts, but it is quite the opposite. Keeps the class awake through humorous examples of what he's talking about. Useful at 7 am.
Always willing to help, you just have to ask for it. Test are based mostly on lecture, and are straight forward
He's hilarious. The political rants make the class go alot faster.
He was very helpful and funny! He made himself available for any student who needed assistance
Way too arrogant and loudmouthed. All his rants seem to be about how someone else is/was an idiot but HE (prof. johansen) knew better. Entertaining but a little too full of himself. Avoid the class unless there is no one else teaching it.
The guy is a royal jerk. His opinion is all that matters. He is so full of himself. I got an "A" but I would NEVER recommend him to anyone unless you like to be put down and listen to him talk about himself.
Arrogant, self-centered, pompous, slime ball. That should tell you a bit. There are a number of good teachers so don't bother with him unless you like to hear him insult fat people and his own colleagues. He likes to talk about how much smarter he is than they are. Really not a cool thing to do.
great class and I hate biology but I learned a lot and actually remember most of what he taught us. i had a blast and would take the class a million more times
Avoid this class like the plague. His lectures are rarely relevant and he spends most of his time on a soap box, preaching about his political and religious views and belittling those of anyone who doesn't agree with him.
Spends 25% of class time on biology, the rest of the time is not even on a subject that pertains to class. ****erse sense of humor. Gets ticked off very easily, and makes class pay!!!
Loved him, best teacher at Fresno City College. Take him if you're looking for the typical college teacher!
Best teacher I've ever had. In reading the previous comments,I made mention of the fact that many people found him pompous and arrogant, but that couldn't be further from the truth. He just has a passion for biology and no tolorance for stupidity.
Carl johansson is his biggest fan. He delights in proving every person wrong. He cares about biology. If u want to hear a far left political person bash any right wing thought, then pick carl. In favor of stem cell, gay marriage and evolution. He's anti: Bush, republican, bible and any form of religion. Last resort class,he's anti everything.
he's a great teacher. very entertaining..i hate biology and have never been good at it, but i've learned more in his class than i ever have in bio before!
Typical college teacher. Take notes and study because the tests are 50 m.c. and about 6 essays. The questions arn't hard if you study. Overall class is easy if you attend. Also talks about random topics.
He's clearly a smart guy, but a terrible teacher. His answer to questions about the tests is that "life isn't fair." Class time is more often spent on politics or religion than biology. He's also got quite a temper.
He deffinitly knew what he was talking about, but such a smartass. He doesn't care about the students and his take home exams were hard. He is not consisderate or follows the book. If you don't do good on his tests you will fail even if you did good in lab and attendance.
Yeah, he is a smartass and very hard when it comes to exams. My success in this class was, take very good notes on his lectures (EVERYTHING) and i also study the outline for every exam and the notes i got and BAM! i passed. Also, do all labs and field trips!!!
overall he is good professor he is very helpful if you have any questions. His tests are killers though if you dont study you will be lost! Besides the test the class is actually pretty interesting.
tests are very difficult and even if you walk out thinking you did well... you may have not. learned a lot, just he is an ass. arrogant guy that has a lot of opinions. im a liberal so i agreed with most of them but i'd take the class from someone else as lectures were never concise and exam material UNPREDICTABLE.
Johansson is a cool teacher. If you study like you should both from text/lecture/lab then you should do fine. His lectures are never boring and he has many stories to tell. Although dont let your phone go off and dont text in class, then you will be dismissed and look like a fool. He's a bit of a drill sergeant but he's passionate about his work.
He is very passionate about his beliefs and seems to enjoy arguing. You won't win (even if you're right) so don't bother. You'll watch videos about evolution that try to debunk creation. Interesting, but documentaries are designed to persuade. Watch "Expelled: No Intelligence Allowed" after the PBS assignment if you welcome info from both sides.
He's ok. He's just full of himself. A long as you believe everything he will be ok. You just have to get through him putting others down.
Hard class, he is very stuborn and opinonated. He is alwasy right so dont even try and argue with him. He is very passionate about his work. DO NOT TAKE HIS CLASS IF YOU ARE RELIGIOUS ! He is not conciderate of other peoples views or opinions its his way or the highway. He offended me more than 10 times with his negeative comments about my religion
mostly everyone says he's not a good teacher, i think he's one of the best teachers i've had so far at city, his class lectures are extremely interesting and worth attending class, if you miss a day, you're missing so much to learn and it'll be hard if you fall behind. his tests are okay, not that as difficult. i would recommend him to students.
Mr. Johansson is a great teacher! He may be harsh and difficult and ask you to be accountable but so what! He tells the truth, isn't afraid to share his opinion and is hysterical. Very huge ego but you get use to it. He has given me many opportunities in my life to excel and has wrote me many recommendations . I would take him two times over.Best!
Read your book! As long as you do that, come to class most of the time, and do the labs (especially the big assignments) you will do fine. He REALLY tests on your reading. If you don't read the book, he will know. Tests are somewhat long but easy if you actually study. He's also VERY funny and passionate about the subject.
He's so entertaining. Read the book!
terrible teacher. doesnt have clear instructions at all and has a very bad temper.
Funny teacher. Gets very excited about his opionions. Some take home tests. Must read the book for his regular tests. His essay questions were VERY cofusing.
Does not repeat information. If you miss something expect to be dismissed from class the following day. Pay attention. His attitude will discourage most. Journal's for lab are challenging; make sure they are perfect or receive a zero. I would not recommend him.
Lab books must be perfect or will receive no credit. His attitude may make most feel uncomfortable. He will not repeat himself or offer additional help. If you miss one lab, drop.
Easy teacher. If you can follow simple directions, you're already halfway there. He has strong views and gets sidetracked with stuff he's interested in that may or may not pertain to the course.
Johansson loves what he does but is a serious teacher. If you are lazy, disruptive, or a slacker - he will not put up with you. However - if you do your work and pay attention, he is funny and a great teacher. Studying is essential in this class, but his assignments are reasonable, there are no surprises on the tests, and he grades fairly.
I never liked biology (science in general) but this instructor made it interesting. Don't know y students think that he's a hard teacher. If u read the book attend class u will do just fine. as for lab, book has to b organize but u will get credit as long as he sees that u tried to do ur work Great Instructor.
Best bio teacher ever. Lectures are interesting and off topic talks too. Very direct and tells it like it is. A bit liberal for some people's tastes but ok with me. READ THE BOOK!!! Do the labs (easy points) and dedicate a lot of time for studying. Most importantly, follow directions.
This professor is a cool guy! He's passionate about certain topics and isn't afraid to share his opinion. Funny and pretty laid back. Simply show up to class, study your notes, and an A is easy. Labs are fun and easy, however you don't usually pick partners. He offers extra credit on the tests. One Lost Lake lab, a few take home tests & labs.
Easy professor! Just need to do your work, study, and come to class. Lectures are interesting.
If you're super religious and don't plan on coming to class often nor bother to read the book, don't bother taking his class. He's a great teacher and all of the students who did not drop from the class ended up learning a lot from him.
He has to be one of the worst professors to be teaching Biology 3. He made the material really hard to understand. Labs are really confusing and will help only if you put up with his bad attitude. He teaches Biology 3 to get back at every non science major student. Don't take his class you have been warned!
I do NOT recommend Johansson...unless you want to deal with a BAD attitude!Bipolar would be the best word to describe it. Curses and yells like its nothing, I dont even know why hes even a "professor" he doesnt care about us students.
Took his class over the summer and had a great time. Great teacher and tells great stories. Class is not hard as long as you read from the textbook. His tests are straight off from text and lecture!!!
Some teachers are super easy and you learn a lot. Some are out there to test you. He's one of those teachers that push your buttons but if you show that you are trying and you meet with him, he'll help. If you're struggling and you don't, that's on you. There's tutoring for his class, and there's a book on reserve. Don't cheat yourself.
Do not take his class. He screams and goes on about things that have nothing to do with biology. He puts questions on the test that he didn't cover and he tells you that you don't need the book but that the answer was in the book. He refuses to consider that he's the problem. He thinks it's funny that people are failing.
BEST BIO PROFESSOR! 2 online exams, 1 in class exam, and one cumulative final exam. His exams are easy... As long as you come to his lectures and understand the material. His labs and photoessay project is easy, just follow directions and he should give you full credit! Loved his class. Funny guy, but sometimes he can get very emotional.
Horrible teacher. Goes on and on about his beliefs instead of teaching us biology. Says things in lecture then marks them as wrong on the tests. Test questions are poorly written and vague and frequently on things he never covered in lecture and lab. Take a different teacher.
Dont take this guy! Rants on about things that have nothing to do with biology and his labs must be perfect and assignments or else he gives you a F and then says i don't care when you ask him about what you can do to fix it exams have nothing to do with what he teaches as well this guy is a joke dont take him you have been warned!
Easy biology teacher. Just pay attention, do the labs (very easy points) show up to class and that's pretty much about it. Text book is optional. He is a passionate teacher and does get off topic but he's a very good teacher.
At the beginning he is a jerk, but once you get settle in his class everything is easy. Just don't skip class because every class is really helpful, he doesn't help unless you ask for a specific question. He's really inspirational, if you believe he's a bad instructor then he will be one, but if you believe not, hes really AWESOME! I recommend!!!!
This man is a scholar, do some background checking and you will see he is very involved in the science community- you could learn a lot from him. He is not the most approachable, he's a hard ass. I've wanted to cry a few times but I have learned so much from his class. JUST SHOW UP. Its a class you have to actually work for, but no real reading.
His lab work is very confusing because he wants everything done perfectly. This class is the toughest one I've taken so far, but not because I don't get biology in general but because of him. He makes everything so complicated and its almost impossible to do. Overall I question his rubric toward how he wants his students to do there work. NO BUENO!
He makes a lot of his jokes sure, but all in all he is a great professor! He really cares about teaching and you can tell it's his passion. His tests are not hard you just have to apply yourself! And his labs are super easy, some weeks you don't have a lab at all! Great teacher and I would definitely take him again!
His lectures are actually decent, but once you get to the test, expect math problems that you'l have no idea about, and a ridiculous semester project which he said that I copied my diagram from others, and dramatically dropped my grade percentage. Anyways, also expect some essays in this so called BIOLOGY class. But this guy is very rated R LOL.
I found this to be a good professor, he would go on rants at times, but he never got into anything that bothered me with them. Taught the material well. Would be willing to take this professor again. This class was Introduction to Life Science. This class included a field-trip that did not include the professor, so need access to transpo.
Came into this class expecting it to be my worst nightmare, subject & professor. It ended up being my favorite on both ends. Let me tell you this, Johansson is an outstanding instructor & TRULY cares about this job and his students. He will not hold your hand, but he will guide it. I HIGHLY recommend him, these ratings do not do him justice.
If you can't follow directions don't even bother taking Johansson's class. Show up to his lectures--there's no textbook so the only way to get the info you need is to attend class. There's homework but a minimal amount, expect to write lab reports frequently--they're easy if you follow his instructions. Tests are fair, study! Overall, he's great.
Johansson is an maxing teacher. They only reason students don't like is class is because they go in there not wanting to learn. He is very passionate about his job and cares tremendously about his students. If you had a bad experience it's because you tried to take short cuts or you went in with a bad attitude. I 110% would take him again. awesome.
He would've been a good teacher, in my opinion, if he didn't surprise the class with questions on the tests with subjects that were never mentioned before in class. Following directions is a must. All tests are online except for the final. Take your time because you will need it. Not the worst class but not the best either.
Filed a report on this man through the school. This person needs psychological evaluation. Does not need to be a teacher. He has serious control issues--I really don't care about his education--he's a narcissist and cries when he talks about his own accomplishments. Dropped his class and got a B with Olsen no problem.
He is a great instructor! He cares for students and his field of work. Will give you specific instructions that you MUST FOLLOW to turn in laps, video labs, and projects. Too essay. If you turn work before its due he will let you know your errors so you may make the the proper corrections, due on due date. Exams were online when I took his class.
I am a natural science major, and I hope to be as smart as this man one day. He is a great professor. People in my class thought he was a terrible teacher, but they were just being lazy. Stay on it, if you need help just ask, he knows his stuff.
Funny teacher. Show up to lab and lecture and the class should be a breeze.
Very helpful, welcoming, positive and comfortable professor. You are in good hand, will get everything you need from him but you need to invest optimum time. Though I m not native English speaker, still got an A+. Lazy people please do not take his class and destroy his reputation. Just go to an easy A professor who just cares about good review.
Highly recommend this professor. Main thing is to follow instructions, if you can do that you'll pass.
Take this class. You won't regret it. You'll learn more than just biology, you'll learn life skills. He truly cares and sets his students up for success. A highlight of this class is that he takes his students to lost lakes park ( bio 3 class anyways. Not sure if he does that for other classes) and it's a valuable experience. 833
i remember he said i look like santa clause. weird...
Carl comes off very aggressive, but is just very passionate about his class. He'll expect you to show up and do the simple assignments. If you do you should have no problem getting an A, if you don't expect a D or F. His lectures are amazing and i learned more about science than biology from them. Carl cares more about your education than anyone.
He isn't that great. As a teacher he's okay. But his comments borderline racist, sexist, and generally offensive. He says he won't teach like a high school teacher but my elementary bio class was harder than his class.
He is aggressive and the most unprofessional teacher I've ever experienced. Very sexist and authoritative. Most days I wondered about his mental sanity. Never again!
Passionate Professor, great lectures, and by far the most fun I have had in a science class.
He comes off rude but as you get to know him, he is actually not as bad. Very knowledgeable. He knows his stuff! You will def learn in his class. Labs were fun too.
By Far the most passionate and interesting teacher I've ever had the pleasure of being taught by. His lectures are phenomenal and his labs were a ton of fun. Super easy class, just make sure to show up and pay attention. He picks on students but its all just fun and games. I felt really comfortable in his class at all times. 100/10 would take again
He's a great professor , he's caring and a very funny guy. He might be a bit strict but that's because he cares about you succeeding . He gives a good amount of homework but it's easy just don't procrastinate ! Aslong as you do the work and study you'll be good !
highly recommend this teacher, he is passionate about the subject and engages the student. gives a fair amount of homework, you'll pass as long as you do it and pay attention. He allows us to use our notebooks for exams, so make sure you take good notes
Absolutely amazing professor, if you're offended easily, don't read instructions, or don't like loud people this definitely wouldn't be the class for you. He is very passionate about what he teaches and while he comes off as aggressive or mean, he's an absolute teddy bear. Get ready to laugh and study. You NEED to attend lectures as well.
Personality wise this man is hilarious and I love his class. However, it's extremely difficult at times because of how lecture-driven this class is. Labs are straight forward and simple, but if you aren't paying attention exams in this class will rip your grade apart.
I know gene selection because of this man
Johansen is definitely one of a kind. He is himself and doesn't care what anyone thinks of him. I was scared to take this class and a little intimidated by him at fist but he is an awesome professor and his class isn't that hard if you pay attention and study.
First of all he might yell the first day just to get the point across he makes it clear you are not babies and need to be accountable for your stuff when obviously we are in college!!! Other than that dont try copying his power points he gets mad but I would just write or type what he would say thats whats really gonna be on the exams!!
First, a warning. He will yell the first few lectures to get his points across, but he's a real softie after that. He WILL NOT accept late work and is very strict with his instructions. He uses blue door labs (online subscription) instead of a textbook. It's an easy class to pass as long as you pay attention and take good notes. The etc also helps.
He's good at teaching and funny. The class is easy to understand, but there's a lot of time-consuming work. He treats students like high school kids. Doesn't like people taking pictures of slides in class.
Very passionate about what he's teaching. If you show up to lecture and take notes, you'll pass the class. He's a funny guy, sometimes he'll come off as aggressive but all around he's cool. The homework isn't very bad at all, just don't leave it for last minute and you're fine. Tests can contain a few odd questions, but aren't hard to study for.
Currently taking Johansson for a 4week course. There have been A LOT of assignments. You MUST manage your time wisely. This class is not for those of you that are trying to get away with minimal effort. Johanson LOVES what he teaches and wants to put your brain to the test. Follow directions, have a positive view, & you'll be successful. Good Luck!
So heres the thing, Mr Johansson is gonna make your first 2 weeks of Bio 3 Do or Die situation.. this is how he weeds out the ones that dont want to put in the work to pass the course! After that if you go to ETC and study regularly and manage your time you will do just fine! I have never had a more passionate professor! He truly loves his job!
He's very respectful and nice but his teaching was way too hard and be aware of exam's!!
One of the most honest professors I've ever met. He doesn't speak to us like a child but an adults and tell us like it is. Very informative and funny, class/labs are very entertaining. I would take him again just gotta do the work and pay attention. Just gotta talk to him and let him know what is going on he is very understanding and caring.
The workload isn't that bad and it's easy. To pass you need to show up for lectures, listen and take good notes for the unit tests. Great lectures, won't move on until all questions are answered and will explain things over and over. ETC is available as a study, go to this and it's an easy A but you really don't have to. He's well respected in bio.
Prof. Johansson made learning fun the exams aren't hard just study your notes and all the processes like cell division punnet squares ect. He is strict on following rules and not having phones in class. But i found him hilarious always had me cracking up every lecture. Definitely a normal work load here.
He is by far the best professor I've had in City. He cares about his students so as long as you try and ask questions you should pass the class. Take notes and read the syllabus! Great professor, I had him for half online and half in class due to COVID and he was amazing.
His class is one of the best science courses Ive ever taken. Johanssons lectures are enjoyable, he keeps it real but you need to take notes on probably everything. His tests are difficult but if you take good notes & listen well then youll be fine. Johansson is very caring towards his students and never fails to show that
the guy is a complete madman. we had to watch a pbs documentary he was featured in. he wore the pink bunny thing from the christmas story movie during lecture. if you cheat he'll take you out in all legal ways possible. great class!
Johansson is the funniest and most charismatic professor I've ever had. He's very passionate about a lot of things and is incredibly understanding. He makes lectures interesting. Taking notes is ESSENTIAL. Some assignments may be difficult but he's helpful. He plays music in class and shows a lot of documentaries. But he's fun!
I heavily participated in class and one day when I was super depressed I walked into the class to take an exam and he stopped me and took me outside and asked if I was ok. He could tell something was off with me just by looking and offered to let me reschedule the test. He really cares about his students.
He's a giant teddy bear, but his exams are TOUGH. He really loves to word questions oddly to test your knowledge. Take good notes and go to tutoring and you'll pass. The workload is pretty average in the class. He makes lectures/lab fun. You'll learn a lot and crack up a lot in the class. Take the man!
For online 100% course, ONLY hand written lecture notes. Okay professor BUT he will assume majority uses CHATGPT and cheats. Tough grader and talks a lot. He over adds people to his online courses so i'm pretty sure he uses some sort of AI help to grade (idk i'm assuming like he does). His assignments are EXTRA. I wouldn't personally take him again
I have to say I like his lectures and the way he teaches. I just dislike that he does not care about your situation. Assumes we have no life outside of school. If you so dare turn in a multiple files he will give you a zero doesn't matter how much work you put in the assignment if its not how he wants it you get a big fat 0 also paranoid about CHAT
Although, I got an A in his class I would say it was the HARDEST A to manage. Hand written notes only, assumes everyone is using ChatGPT. The documents are also outdated with typos and you MUST listen to what HE wants and not the documents. No half credit, if a mistake is made you get a ZERO or 100. Decent teacher, make sure you have time for work.
This instructor is condescending, hostile toward disabled students, dismissive of accommodations and even calls them “unfair”, falsely accuses plagiarism if notes include content beyond his awful lectures, designs confusing exams, and centers the course around his overinflated ego. Avoid at all costs. I'll be filing an official complaint.
i don't know how this guy has so many high ratings but when i took this guy awhile back he was the biggest arse. went off on a poor classmate for simply asking if he'd upload his powerpoints on canvas to take notes on for later and left snarky, condescending comments when i struggled to meet deadlines for homework and instilled a sense of anxiety
