he is very informative about the subject and is very in tune with what he is teaching... but he is a smart ass and it's annoying.
He is very intune with the material, but he is a major smart ass and very pompous!
He's the chairperson of the Psychology Department so he knows what he's talking about. However, his test are hard as hell and you HAVE TO COME TO CLASS!!!! And be sure to read the book also. As a person he is a smart ass but he's also very funny and cool.
whats wrong w/ you people? macfarland is an easy teacher, the course is exactly what he says it is and his smart ass comments make the class funny as hell and more bearable.

McFarland is a good teacher that knows his stuff, but gives some hard as hell test. He seems as though he has no time to answer questiopns because he always send you to his assistant.
great teacher;very smart
I would not recommend McFarland to any incoming freshmen. I took him Fall 2003 and I failed with flying colors.. He was not helpful at all to me. I do not see how people think of him as being easy.
I looked foward to going to his class. He's so funny and makes psychology fun to learn and keeps you interested. I took his class in the morning for 2 hours and I never fell asleep. His tests are hard but if you do the study book it really helps.
Dr. McFarland is the greatest psychology professor ever. I learned a whole lot in his class. Plus he's so hilarious. There is no way anyone should get lower than a B in his class, otherwise you're just dumb or brain dead.
He's smart and a smart ass. Go to lecture, but also read the book. Tests cover a good portion of both and are HARD unless you know what's going on. I fell asleep in class a lot, so I'm glad he had extra credit to make up the grade from awful tests.
Macfarland is an awesome psychology teacher. He's really smart(& a smart ass)& VERY funny. I dont understand how people say his tests are hard bc i didnt even look at the book & i made a 96 on his first test. just use the study guide and come to class.
Easy teacher. Be sure to read the text, attend all classes, and do the required research. Tests are easy if you practice in the study guide. Easier grading scale makes it impossible not to get an A.
He is a big smart ass but he give good lectures. Overall the class is not that hard but the tests are what will make you or break you. Although his grading scale is awesome, and the fact that you can get some many extra credit points is what makes him a pretty good teacher.
For a 101 class, the class was sort of too hard. His tests, lecture, and the book did not match at all. His grading scale is lowered for a reason.
Well honestly I do not feel that CARL helped me in this class he is a bad professor I do not think that he should be a psyc professor. The only thing that he talked about in his class was his family and him and it was annoing and he only gave one good lecture and that was in the beginning!!!!
I don't know what class the previous 2 reviewers were taking. Tests, lectures, and the book DO match. Just read the book, go to class/take notes, and use the study guide that comes with the book. With the adjusted scale and possibility for extra credit, there's NO EXCUSE for not making at least a B.
I would not recommend this class to anyone. He did not teach it like it was an intro class but like it was Psyhc 210 or something. He needs to retire b/c HE CAN NOT TEACH PSYCHOLOGY.I did not enjoy his class and I wish that someone would have told me about him before I signed up for it DO NOT TAKE HIM
I dont know what others are talking about. He's an excellent prof. He teaches on a level that a college course should be taught on, we are not in high school. He is very amusing. Only about 30% of test is lecture, 70% is book. Even if you don't attend every class read the book and you'll do well.
My class only met once a week, and the tests were still easy. He was very clear and thorough in his lectures. He used stories to make the material more interesting. A+++++ WOULD TAKE AGAIN.
Talks too much about politics, and his jokes get pretty old after a while, but overall a fairly easy class. I ended up w/ an A, but only b/c of his AWESOME grading scale~ (Hint: Read the book, and know the "rehearse it" and key terms)
This is the easiest class I've ever taken! All you have to do is go to class and halfway listen, then look over the practice quizes. EASY A!
He's humorous, cool. But he talks about his life 10x as much as he discusses psy.He talks more about his current wife,ex-wife,kids,and his college years than the subjct at hand.To pass his class, pay attention to the few meaningful things he says, but most importantly, READ THE BOOK YOURSELF.You might get a "C".
Dr.McFarland is a good professor. His lectures are easy to follow. I never went to class as a freshman and ended up with a B just by reading the textbook and doing the extra credit. This is an excellent class to skip if you do not want to be there. Just make sure that you DO READ THE TEXTBOOK AND STUDY GUIDE.
Dr. McFarland is funny and learned. You'll learn much about human nature from him.
I think Dr. McFarland is the best psychology teacher ever. His class is long...but he keeps it interesting. I would definately recommend him to anyone who is thinking about taking psychology.
easy to follow. he does talk too much about his family and crap. overall, good teacher esp with all the extra credit
Funny and cute!
OK...I don't know what all these people are talking about when they say his class is easy..HIS CLASS IS THE ONE CLASS I HAVE A BAD GRADE IN!! I have a C..which I don't normally make..HIS TESTS ARE HARD!! Tests come from the book mainly...but I read and studied for 3 DAYS for the last test and still made a D. He is funny sometimes, but kinda a perv!
He is a very funny man....lots of extr credit. I never made above a D on his tests though!
He makes the material and the class very interesting. However, his tests are extremely hard. Mostly everything on the test comes straight from the book, so no matter how long it takes you...be SURE to read the chapters, or you will do badly on the tests.
McFarland is an asset to UAB. Charismatic, witty, and enthusiastic about teaching. Keeps the class entertained with his lectures. Always explains hard-to-grasp concepts in detail. Offers a more-than-fair grading policy and extra credit; even gives a study guide. Welcomes questions, really wants to see his students succeed. And kinda cute, too!
Hated this class. He is a very opinionated man who forces his ideas on everyone. Opinions do not need to be taught. You might as well not go to class. His lectures are worthless. Read the book if you want to learn psychology.
Everythingturns into a sex discussion...I usually walked out feeling very dirty.
Very great teacher. Pay attention to the lectures and read the book and u will definitely have an A out of his class. Very Funny
If you want to succeed on tests, you have to read the book. As much as I hate to say it, it's important to come to class too, because he likes to put questions on tests which ask about something specific which was discussed in class. He's the head of dept, so he thinks he is the stuff... I wish I'd taken someone else.
He's a pretty ****ed guy that usually spent 85% of the class being off topic and making funny jokes, with the other 15% being lecture, but the entire 15% was guaranteed to be on the test. Make sure you go to class as most of his test material is lecture. I didn't like him much b/c I didn't learn anything, but he's a pretty cool guy.
His class sucked!! I've never made a bad grade & I made a C in there! His class is freakin hard! I don't know why all these people keep saying it is easy..I mean, yeah he was funny, but FAR from easy! Word of advice to anyone signed up for his class -- 1. he thinks he is God's gift to UAB, so drop this class & sign up for another teacher!
He's pretty funny, but you have to come to class and read the book to make a decent grade on the tests. I made a B without an extensive amount of effort.
He.......................SUCKED. He was the first one who put C on my transcript ever!!!! REally wanted to kill him because I put sooooo much effort with this class!!! Sucked!
very nice and funny teacher. makes class interesting. you must study for the tests, they are hard. use the study guide b/c some questions come from it. just know the material and read the book. going to class isnt very important. he gives lots of opportunity for extra credit so get all you can!
He is great! Tests are not bad, but you have to study. Use the study guide! These are a lifesaver. He really tries to make it fun. He is also really nice. A great teacher, I would recommend him to anyone taking a psych class.
"Carl" is the most awesomest teacher i've ever had in my entire life. He is the epitome of why college is so friggin' awesome!!! He has a great sense of humor and anyone with 2 brain cells should take his class..but only if you have a sense of humor.
I was really excited about this class when I signed up for it, and he was OK for the first few weeks. But he's kind of a perve and his lectures have absolutely no structure to them at all. It's hard to make your notes neat. Awesome grading scale, though. Definitely helped. Just read the book and do the study guide and you'll be fine.
He tests on information in the text, which he may not cover (and there is a tone of reading,) and from his lectures. The class is fun because he tells funny stories but his exams are killers!!
Not the worst prof I've had, but FAR from the best. He really thinks he's funny, but most of his humor was pretty immature - and I DO have a sense of humor ;-) He didn't cover much material in class, most of learning for tests you have to do on your own and he doesn't use the testbook. If you can get another professor, do it.
McFarland was not that bad. You should study his notes in addition to reading the text. BUY THE BOOK! He was always helpful to me when I did not understand an aspect of the lecture. His tests are not that bad! Seriously...
He is a great teacher. He drops the lowest test grade, offers over 20 points extra credit, and an 84 is considered an A. He explains in debth and really wants his students to understand. Highly recommended!
DO NOT TAKE THIS CLASS!! he is not clear on what he wants you to know for the tests.
At first I absolutly hated this class, but I did not study like I should and I did not go to class. I also did not do too well on the first two tests. That was my fault. He gave us study guides and on the last three tests I made an A. He gives chances to earn extra points for the final exam. I don't recommend skipping class.
He is a very good teacher but he could make himself more open to students that need help.
this man is a kick a** guy. he is awesome tests are easy but u must go to class. BUY THE STUDY GUDE BECAUSE QUESTIONS COME DIRECTLY FROM IT. ALSO HE GIVES LOTS OF EXTRA CREDIT there's no reason to make below a b. also the man is sexy what more can u want in a professor
He is an awesome teacher. He grades really easily and his tests aren't that hard. His class is actually really interesting and fun.He is the best psychology teacher. Take his class!
This class made me want to minor, or possibly double major, in psychology. Dr. McFarland is very intelligent and an amazing teacher.
Do not take him. He may be a funny guy but he does not teach psychology... He spends most of the class talking about his own personal stories. I study constantly for this class and still struggle. But if you MUST take this class...you'll need the study guide...but my advice is...AVOID AT ALL COSTS!
He is so funny! The tests are slightly hard if you don't read the book, but he makes it so easy to get an A in the class. There is a TON of extra credit .. some for just coming to class .. and you only have to make an 84 to get an A! If you take PY 101 you should get into his class!!!! I love Dr. McFarland!
I wish he spent more class time teaching psychology instead of pushing his political views and rambling on and on about Dr.Phil and other stuff that is not really psychology.
Dr. McFarland is a wonderful teacher! Students who complain about him not teaching psychology are misguided. His stories are related to the material and help give a real-world perspective on the various topics. 84 gets you an A! The tests are scantron, and by definition, not subjectively graded. So the "cute" girl's flirting did her no good!
terrible
I would highly recommend Dr. McFarland's class. His tests aren't that hard if you read over the chapters and do the study guide. His lectures are pretty entertaining and he gives tons of extra credit. Take him.
He's a good teacher and he has alot of real life examples. The main thing that I didn't like was him pushing his political oppinion so much. Attendance isn't mandatory but to do well on the exam you have to go to class to hear the lectures. His tests are tough but he gives tons of extra credit. You should take him :]
He is funny and a good teacher. His grading scale is awesome (84-100=A, 72-83=B, 60-71=C). You definitely have to study for the tests but if you do the study guide you should be good. I would recommend him.
I really enjoyed Dr. McFarland's class. His lectures were always entertaining. His tests aren't too hard either if you pay attention in class and read over the chapters. You only have to get an 84 to get an A too and he gives a ton of extra credit! I would highly recommend taking him.
you really dont need the study guide book, he uses blackboard to post everything you need. his lectures are interesting but he definitely pushes his personal views and opinions. tests arent difficult if you study and he is an easy grader because of the scale and extra credit opportunities
Awesome teacher! Very interesting
great lectures, always finds way to tie everything into something thats happened to him. Can be funny. read book, and do expirements, really helps your grade
Dr. McFarland posts all of his lectures on Blackboard Vista so there really is no need to take notes in class except for when he's talking about experiments as those are on the exams. His class is very easy and he gives bonus points for coming to class a couple times the semester. Read the notes and read the text and an A should be in arms reach.
Dr. Mcfarland is a very fair teacher. He gives tons of bonus opportunities and as long as you read the books and pay attention in class, you will be fine. Although, his lectures get boring sometimes, but other than that he is a very easy teacher!
Dr. McFarland was a cool teacher and made psychology interesting at times. His lectures were helpful but to really do well in this class there is alot of reading. Even if you read all the chapters for an exam there is no guarantee that someone would make even a B. I did like his grading scale. If you had an 84 you made an A.
he was nice, very clear, gave great notes, attendance is not necessary but it will count against you becasue he gives pop quizes, and they are extra points on your test or negative points. nad he gives tons of extra credit.
I loved Dr. McFarland! Very funny and interesting. Attendance is extremely helpful, since tests come from both the lectures and the book. Read and come to class!
READ THE BOOK!!! Alot of profs say "the book is 50% of the test" when they're really just bsing you. This guy MEANS IT. He loves that book. Come to class. There are so many things to learn. It's "how to understand people's behavior AND how to control their behavior." Cool stuff! The SI girl ties everything to real life. We even watched youtube!
I took his intro psych class about a year ago and I loved it!! He is kind of a smart ass but so am I, so I like that kind of personality! Easy class, I made a B in the class. I highly recommend Dr. McFarland! Gives a ton of bonus point so go to class!
This class is easy SO LONG AS YOU PUT IN THE EFFORT! I've talked to him numerous times outside of class, and he despises students who don't go to class. He also loves the textbook. So, show up to class and pay attention and also read outside of class and you'll be fine. Use the study guide, some of his questions come from it. Just don't slack off.
Dr. McFarland is a wonderful teacher. The first test was a bit of a shock; psychology requires studying! If you read the chapters and pay attention during class, you should be fine, but don't expect this to be an easy course. His grading scale is excellent and he gives so many bonus points though. Very funny guy!
He is very monotone and boring. The best part about his class is his grading scale. What would normally be a B is an A, what would normally be a C is a B, etc. It's the only way I got a B in the class. Personally, I wouldn't recommend him.
Dr. Mcfarland is a pretty good guy. Class can be quite humorous at times. Best thing about his class is grading scale. An 86 is an A and with the extra credit he offers it ends up being that you only need a 78 average on test for an A. Pop quizzes aren't graded you just have to show up to class. They are random though. All in All not a bad class.
Dr. McFarland was a great professor! He kept me laughing every class. Some of his lectures were a little boring, but overall his class was lots of fun. Take him, take him, take him!!
Dr. McFarland is really funny and he makes psychology pretty interesting but you have to study and use your book. A LOT. This class is 30% notes 70% BOOK!!! Class is not mandatory but he does say things in class (THAT HE WILL TEST YOU ON) that are not included included in the Black Board notes. So going to class is important for a good grade.
I loved this class! He is hilarious and makes psychology as interesting as he can, even though it's difficult to do with the tedious definitions, etc. His tests are tough, you have to know the material! Make sure to read the chapters he will cover before you come to class and invest in the study guide for the book. The tests are all by power point
This class is not that bad if you STUDY! Make sure you come to all the lectures because he WILL test you on the lectures. His test are mostly application so know everything in DETAIL! He is an intresting professor, however his test are difficult!
His class is fun and he has corny jokes that make it just as much fun. His test are very difficult. You must attend all lectures and read every word of the book and make sure you understand EVERYTHING. I would not take this class if you are taking other harder classes. It's time consuming. His test are not your typical multiple choice questions.
Great teacher!! Class is always interesting because he constantly makes jokes that crack everyone up. You only need an 86 for an A in the class and he offers bonus points. My test grades were 62(lowest grade is dropped), 70, 82, and 82. I still came out with an A. You MUST read the book. If you go to class and read the book, an A is very possible
He is a great guy! He is hilarious. His tests are hard and chances are you will fail them, but DONT drop his class! I made a 46, 56, 58 and 74 on his final and did all his extra credit and ended up being two points from a B in his class. Thats not bad considering i failed all his test!
This class wasn't the easiest. The material presented in class seemed simple, until it showed up on the test in abstract ways. Nevertheless, it IS possible to make an overall. He offers so much extra credit, you could get low B's on all your tests and still end up with an A in the class.
Carl is a pretty awesome professor, the only catch to his class is that you absolutely have to read the text. If you don't, you won't do well on the tests, and he tells you this beforehand, so you shouldn't be caught off guard. His tests are from lecture and the text and they don't overlap often, so read and take good notes and you'll do fine.
I found Dr. McFarland to be pompous, as well as offensive. His class itself is extremely easy, however he is difficult to bear. I would recommend this class for anyone looking for an easy elective, but don't expect to much out of him as a nice guy. I may be the exception but Dr. Mcfarland's lecture is just terrible.
Attend all the lectures, study the textbook and you should do well. He teaches mostly large classes, so if you don't like taking a test off powerpoint, look for a smaller class. I enjoyed his class.
Go to lecture, read the book, attend/use SI worksheets. He uses case studies/stats from lecture (babbles at times but makes it interesting) and textbook info (lots) on tests, Q wording can be a little tricky so study thoroughly. Pay attention to the research requirements and ways to earn bonus-really easy to receive a letter grade higher with them.
McFarland is really nice and funny, but his class stinks. Read the book, go to EVERY CLASS, and attend every SI meeting that you can. His tests are difficult, and the research is just extra work that's not needed. I would try for a smaller class.
Dr. McFarland is an interesting professor. He's got a great sense of humor and he really knows his stuff. I found his lectures very informative. If you plan on taking his class, attendance is not mandatory, but he will give occasional quizzes that you cannot make up if you miss them. Attend lectures and read the book, and you should do fine.
I enjoyed it. First off, there are 600 students in one class. Get there early if you want a good seat! Random pop quizzes to take attendance. Personally, I thought the material was quite interesting! YOU HAVE TO BUY THE BOOK & READ IT! The book material = 70/80% of tests. Everything he says will not be on Powerpoint. GO TO CLASS! :D take him!
Dr. McFarland is an amazing professor and makes the material really easy to learn. He will tell you there are 2 professors in the class - him & the book! The class was entertaining, fun,and interesting. I got an A and I really enjoyed the class. He is a great guy and helpful if you need anything explained.
Excellent Professor. Hes very funny and tries to relate the material to real life events to make it more interesting and understandable. I don't know why people are saying the book is mandatory, I made an A without even opening it. Just go to class, pay attention, and make sure to memorize all the study guides and powerpoints.
McFarland is an all around great professor. If you take the time to read his power points in class and read the text book you will pass.
While he's very funny and nice, his class is terrible. Rarely do you cover material in class that's on the test. Do not take his class.
Terrible class, terrible lessons.
You can read the powerpoints and do the SI's guided materials and make C's on every test but then get the extra credit and make a B in the class! If you really want that A you will really need to put the work in. Not easy but not TERRIBLY hard.
this class was awful, its hard to bare and you never learn what you need to know for the test in class. I would advise you take this class online. On the other hand he is funny
His tests are confusing! He gives horrible lectures DO NOT TAKE HIM!
McFarland is a very good teacher whom is passionate about his field. His tests are very hard, but if you pay attention and study you will do just fine. Make sure you do the extra credit! Lectures are very informative and interesting. Sit towards the front and pay attention.
Dr. McFarland's class was difficult at times but very easy to make a good grade. His lectures are very interesting. Make sure to pay attention in class and go to SI sessions. He gives lots of extra credit that boosts your grade a whole letter grade. The class is not hard if you put in the effort. If you try you will definitely make at least a B!
Dr. McFarland's class can be difficult sometimes. However, he gives lots of extra credit and he drops your lowest test grade. Make sure you go to class and really pay attention to his lectures. Also attending the SI sessions are very helpful. I would recommend taking his class!
He makes this class very easy to pass by dropping your lowest exam and giving extra credit. That can raise your grade by a letter. If you sit in the back it will be hard to hear. But both his lectures and the book are very helpful. If you don't have time to study both, you can still make a decent grade. Mock exam questions show up on actual exam.
Avoid taking if possible. He is a really nice guy and a great teacher. The problem is hes tests are 50% book material and 50% lecture. If you do not read every word of every chapter, it's going to be a ruff course. He does give a lot of extra credit and drops lowest test so you can pass w/o trying. If you want an A it is not easy.
AVOID THIS TEACHER
Avoid this teacher at all costs. He is a disgrace to UAB and the psychology department. He won't round up your grade and he lectures on one section of one chapter while he tests you on four separate chapters. Terrible terrible teacher. Trust me and stay away.
I have mixed feelings about Dr. McFarland. He is a very funny and engaging teacher, but the class is very difficult. He gets off topic a lot, and is sometimes difficult to follow. You HAVE to read the chapters and study study study if you want to make good grades. I'm not sure if I would take his class again.
McFarland was better at making be feel insignificant and dumb than teaching. He idolized some students, ignored others, and hated most. His tests are these awful projection tests where you get to read the question for like a minute before the next question. If he tells you to not study something, do it anyway. He sucks like that.
Try to avoid this class if possible. Long lectures, tons of reading, and pretty hard tests. Take notes on lectures, especially on the real life examples that he gives, and do all of the extra creditparticipation points and you can get a decent grade.
Great professor, beautiful (literally) would take again.
He's hilarious. But him and his class are awful. Avoid his class at all cost!!!
Dr. McFarland was awesome. His lectures are very interesting and complement the textbook. His test questions draw from both lecture and the text so it is necessary to read and come to class. I notice those who complained about the exams played on their phones during lecture and didn't touch the book. He offered extra credit so an A is easy to earn.
This class requires a lot of reading and focus but it is impossible to fail. Test questions are pulled from lectures, powerpoints, study guides, and supplemental instruction. It is best to attend every class because he gives extra credit when you least expect it. Oh, and he will call you out if you are not paying attention! Funny guy!
Great teacher! You will not pass if you do not go to class, he gives pop quizzes randomly, and you cannot make them up at all. Overall this is a great class. Read the book, look over the supplemental assignments, and take good notes and you'll be ok. Pay attention to his lectures the things he say ,NOT PUT IN THE POWERPOINT, WILL BE ON THE TEST!
Dr. McFarland lectures on part of what the book says but tests you on the full text. If you don't read the book, it will be very hard to make an A. However, he does give extra credit for doing research surveys and interviews. These extra credit points raised my average by about 10 points. Pop quizzes are for bonus points but are given randomly.
He is very tough. He doesn't like to help students, so you see him in class, and then, you're on your own.
I enjoyed Dr. Mcfarland's class a lot because he kept it interesting. This is a very tough class and you have to study if you want to pass! His tests cover his lecture and his book and he will test you on things he says but doesn't put in the PowerPoint so make sure to pay attention in class! He gives a ton of extra credit which helps a lot!
