Carl is AWESOME! He's one of MCC's best professors! Take'em
He actually makes learning about rocks fun and interesting!!He great!!
An awesome teacher!! Very funny and helpful in explaining in laymens terms. Very competent in subject area; go on field trips too! Makes learning about rocks interesting.
GREAT professor. Very interesting to listen to, and he makes the lectures interesting. I would recommend this guy to anyone.
Carl is a great prof. he listens and knows his geology and has it down pat, i can't wait till july when we all go to the Cascade Mountains were going to have so much fun with everything that he has planned. Take his classes you actually learn something
I love Carl! I have had 3 classes with him and he is awesome. He makes geology fun and always does crazy things. Like put a picture of my massive blister on the trip board.
Carl is one of my 2 favorite teachers ever. He was amazing. He missed his calling in life as an actor. He is extremely intelligent. He demanded respect from his class. His class gave it. I wish all my teachers were as great as him!!
One of the best professors at Macomb. And one of the nicest ones too.
Carl is cool man, and you learn lots of cool stuff too.
best class i've ever had. you can tell that carl loves his job. he's extremely organized and his lectures are very clear and also entertaining. i highly recommend that anyone takes a class with carl.
Carl is awesome. best teacher ever, makes learning fun and very clear. his grading system is really easy too. Take em'
very organized, interesting and fun
Excellent teacher!!! Interesting to listen to and willing to explain things if you have questions. Tests are from the lectures.
Professor Schafer is the best teacher at macomb. He never makes you look dumb if you ask stupid questions and will not give up until you understand something completely. Connects with all of his students and never plays favorites.
He rocks! I had him in the summer of 2004. He is a very highly respected teacher by all of his students. Very INTERSESTING even though I really don't like science.
this guy calls everyone "people" and talks like Jim Carrey... great professor!
This guy is crazy, but very funny. He makes science fun. Class is always interesting, you never know what he is going to do. All the lectures are interesting and the labs are easy.Great Job!
This guy is the best teacher i've ever had. I had always been luke-warm about the idea of being a science teacher, but after having Carl, i feel that "I want to be that guy". If you need a science, get Carl!
Carl makes the class interesting and fun. He is a great teacher, he is extremely knowledgable and obviously loves his job. Tests are directly from lectures, pay attention and its an easy A.
One of the best teachers i've ever had. This guy loves his job. Teaches with great enthusiasm and passion. He makes this class very interesting whether you like the material or not. I recommend this instrctor to anybody.
He is one of the best teachers I've had. He is so into his classes and he makes them so interesting. He teaches with such passion, his classes are lots of fun. He makes so much fun. I truly would recommend him to anyone interested in taking Geology.
i dont care for science, but i learned so much in this class, and it was so interesting! he is so into what he teaches, it is almost unreal!! if you need science TAKE SCHAFER!!! so awesome!!! and he makes book optional for intro to geology!!! you so dont need it either if you just follow lectures with good notes!
One of the best science teachers at Macomb! Very helpful and enthusiastic- keeps you focused and interested. Very few homework assignments!
I felt like I was in 3rd grade all over again..when science could actually be fun and not just material presented to you to study for a test. Schafer's class was very interesting. Since GEOL isn't a subject you study alot growing up, he teaches it in a way that you can't help but feel excited to attend class each day. I learned so much from him. A+
Schafer should have his own show on tv. He treats you like adults in that he doesn't talk down to you when teaching but keeps your interest like you're a kid with fun experiments and isn't afraid to make a mess. He was not only a great and interesting teacher, he was very entertaining to watch what he had planned for us each day. Take him people A+
Professor Schafer is probaly the most intresting teacher to listen to. In a class like geology I find myself hanging of his evey word, which is pretty amazing considering the topic. He has everyone laughing during class and will go out of his way to make you understand.
HE IS AWESOME!!! sorta reminds me of Jim Carey haha. sucha funny guy and he keeps u interested the WHOLE time.
Im not sure what planet he is from but you will definatly spend the whole class laughing (and it will be at the teacher)He has so much energy he reminds you of the little kid that needs to run around outside. He squirts toothpaste and water allover and throws chalk all the time. You will love this class and its so easy. The best adventure ever.
This class is a toothpaste oozing, acid flying, rock smashing, no book required , clean as a bean, Pickaxe to the brain type of class. Believe me you will never ever Eeeveer has a class like this. Most energetic teacher ever and you will laugh non stop. Take this little diddy and your laughter will go KABOOM!
Best teacher I've ever had. Loved his class. He made lectures very interesting. Great sense of humor - well thought out lesson plans. Rock on!!

My favorite Professor EVER! He's so energetic, that even if he was teaching about ant civilizations it would be the most interesting thing in the world. He's very funny and very informative. I would take every class he has to offer. I never enjoyed a class as much. I did great in the class. He offers extra credit just for showing up on time.
Very energetic and animated, however grading was fairly difficult. I carry a 3.75 GPA and I had to bust my a** to get an A-. You really need to know this stuff like the back of your hand if you are planning on an A for a grade.
Harder than I would have imagined, but very interesting none the less! Always fun going to class, except on hands-on quiz days...alot of silly memorization. Somehow I pulled off an A, and was a little surprised. Tests were moderate, no homework or extra credit (except bonus test points based on class tartiness)
Professor Shafer is a great teacher don't get me wrong, but I never thought a Geology class would ever be this difficult. There's ALOT of memorization on tests and quizzes and if you miss class even once you're basically screwed. Don't take this class if you want to get an easy A or just blow off, because you will not pass.
Probably my favorite teacher at macomb! makes it actually exciting and entertaining, i was in his geology class for 3 hours and they flew by! I would highly recommend this professor
He is very energized, if you have a morning class he'll wake you right up, prety easy class if you take notes and study its very easy, he will tell you the first day not to buy the book so dont bother, hes real helpful with any questions and he makes you want to learn more about what ever hes teaching!
It was a harder class than I thought it would be, but the prof made it easier by giving us study guide before the test so we would know what to study. He was decently entertaining overall and gave extra credit. I would recommend him.
I had Schafer for earth science, intro to Geology, and Historical Geology and it was amazing! This guy is one the greatest teachers I have ever had in my life. I went in wanting to go for Meteorology and came out desperate for a degree in Geology. He teaches the class with lots of clearity and energy. I recomend him a 1000 times over!
Best teacher I have ever had. He made me want to change my major to Geology. His lectures are exciting and as long as you take notes to study from you will do excellent on tests.
This teacher is a good teacher overall, although u need to studyy study study in order to suceed. Teacher is not very understanding and seems to make a lot of remarks about many students..and on the other hand, cares about how well the students do in class!
Amazing teacher. I strongly recommend this teacher if you have any interest in this area. Even if you dont, take the class.
What a great teacher. Funny, clear, and very knowledgeable Take his class with a heart beat!
expects you to know the name of every single rock for the tests.even tho tho ones that we studied were completely different than the ones he used for the tests. he is definitely not a tien. i would not recommend taking this class with this teacher. he is terrible..and doesn't have good jokes, they are corny, lame, and repeats the same ones.
Great teacher..so enthusiastic..a really good guy. He made it pretty easy to get a good grade. Memorizing rocks wasn't fun, but it wasn't TOO bad. If you go to class and take notes, the tests come almost right from the notes. You had 4 tests, and maybe 3 or 4 quizzes and a lab every week..it was a pretty fun class. He was a really fun guy.
Great teacher. This was a class I always looked forward to. He makes class so much fun and his lectures aren't boring like some other professors. He gives you every chance to succeed. Take good notes and you will be just fine.
This class is very difficult. I was in class everyday and I struggled with this class. Very difficult to remember all the different types of rocks and minerals. No homework, but don't let that fool you, because you need to go home every night and study you a** off. Also, test are multiple choice and short answer, so know your stuff in this clas
He is the BEST Lecturer ever!He will keep class very interesting. Very nice person and found him very caring. Take advantage of "extra credit" and help he will offer with "study guide." You must attend class and take good notes to do well on his tests! The tests are multiple choice But NOT easy!Don't just memorize his notes; must know concepts well.
Prof shafer is a really good guy and is really passionate about teaching, some of the material is pretty difficult especially with identifying rocks but he is an extremely good teacher def recommend
He seemed to be very annoyed when I or anyone else ask him for help. His tests were hard despite the fact I am a student on the Deans List.I think I am going to end up with a grade I do not like simply because he makes it so hard. The entire class struggled and he did not care.Everyone talks about extra credit but he offered it once!Him=GPA falling.
He was kinda an akward instructor. the material was pretty straight forward, but his tests were hard as hell and actually required you to understand the information rather than just memorize it, I suppose that would make him a good teacher, but it also means you have to really pay attention to things and understand the way Geology works.
This man is geeked about rocks--he loves GEOL-it shows in his teaching which helps students learn. Book NOT needed at all. Here is your heads up-do not fool yourself thinking you got it from lecture only. You MUST internalize the concepts to get an A. (If a C is what you want, it's easy) ** Big Hint::TAKE PICTURES OF ROCKS / MINERALS TO STUDY.**
I highly recommend this teacher. He treats students with respect. He appears to enjoy his work. He is energetic and keeps your attention better than most. He explains information in an easy to understood way. He sets out clear expectation and assists his students in reaching those expectations.
Proff Schafer is great, but has really hard tests so study
i really enjoyed his class. but the work you do in class doesn't help your grade at all. the tests you take are your grade. but he made the class fun.
I loved this class! Mr Schafer gets so into the lecture and you can tell he is really passionate about science! He's entertaining, and writes everything on the board to copy notes. 4 tests, all multiple choice, with some labs. Just come to class and write down his notes! He's a great prof, I will definitely take him again!
Best professor I had since my autoshop teacher. Carl is a VERY lively guy, even in the morning! He made the 3 hour class go by fast. He explains the material very well. He is very happy to answer questions even off the wall ones. HIGHLY recommended!
AWESOME professor and overall person. I would definitely take this class again even tho I have no interest in the field. He's totally into what he's teaching and genuinely loves his job. He makes it easy to get into what he's talking about! =) The class is a bit challenging, but it's WAY worth it! Two thumbs WAY up for Carl!! WOOOT! =D
Carl has a passion for geology, but he tends to repeat the same information, and the same phrases (ie "needless to say"), over and over again. His tests are simple; they're almost copy-cat from the notes. He adds his own theology/philosophy into his notes and even review sheets. All in all, simple science class.
I would highly recommend this class and teacher to anyone who is or is not going into the field of earth science. He made the class VERY enjoyable. Answered every question anyone had. Carl is an exceptionally passionate teacher and really knows his stuff!! I wish that I could have had more time in his class. TAKE HIM...YOU WON'T REGRET IT!! :)
If you need a science lab credit course, do everything you can to get Prof Schafer. His committment to the success of the students, his passion for teaching the subject, and his engaging, energetic, and well-prepared lectures make for THE best science lecture/lab course you could hope to take at Macomb, hands down.
My favorite professor right now. No textbook and is crystal clear during his lectures. He uses pictures of his own trips to clarify different things throughout the class. If you attend class and actually listen and study for his tests you won't have an issue at all.
4 exams (taken right from his lectures - don't buy the book), 2 lab quizzes (which are bit hard unless you study), around 8-ish labs (which you do with a partner and he's willing to help out). I found this class to be very interesting without having any interest in it and medium in the hardness scale.
Who knew rocks could be so much fun? In his class there are! Don't buy the book, go to class, you'll be fine. He's so awesome.
What an awesome guy, very passionate about what he teaches and was very helpful with every question I asked. I really liked his style of teaching, very easy to follow along, and you come out feeling like you learned something!
Great guy, very enthusiastic professor...you won't be bored. You don't need to buy the book but you need to attend class or you will suffer. Test are tough, he really makes you think to get the right answer. No homework but I recommend studying your notes a few times per week.
Great guy, very enthusiastic professor...you won't be bored. You don't need to buy the book but you need to attend class or your grade will suffer. Test are tough, he really makes you think to get the right answer. No homework but I recommend studying your notes a few times per week.
Carl is by far one of the BEST teachers I have ever had! He inspired me to study Geology-I now have a minor. He isn't an easy professor-I had to work for my B+ but he is fair and will give you everything you need to complete an assignment! He makes something as simple as a rock the most interesting thing you've ever heard about!
It's funny, you can tell the idiots by their low score of this teacher and their spelling skills..This teacher was always entertaining, answered EVERY question we asked him and if a personal issue came up he worked with us on it..yes, it is not an easy A class, but it was informative and if you paid attention it was not very hard to get good grades
He is the best teacher I have ever had. If I hadn't taken his class and gone on the Lake Superior Trip I wouldn't have found out that I LOVE geology and changed my major. He gets really into his lectures too. Chalk flies everywhere when there is a violent volcanic eruption.
Carl really is a great teacher who genuinely loves what he does. He makes it a point to learn everyone's name and is very enthusiastic. Don't need book, but need need need to attend class. Exams are meant to make you think but they are do-able if you attend class and pay attention. Study all the notes, not just the study guide.
Professor Schafer was a great professor! He explained everything in a good amount of detail and made the 3 hours in class go by faster then expected. Very enthusiastic about what he teaches. Id recommend him to everyone. Test and quizzes are easy if you study! Gives study guides which help alot.
Best ever
Schafer is AMAZING. I think I had a crush on him. He understands that the 1210 class in a introductory class, and that you're coming in with no prior knowledge about the topics. He gets you interested though. He's witty, and funny. And will explain things as clearly as you need it. Come to class. Taking notes and labs will really help you for exams
This guy is AWESOME. He's a very loud and energetic professor. He's crystal clear on the lectures and makes them fun with his interesting chalkboard animations and style of teaching. I was an undecided major before I took his class, now I'm a Geology major and going on his next student trip. Take Professor Schafer, YOU WON'T REGRET IT.
MR.S is very fair when it comes to the text book, he tells you that you don't need it and will give lecture notes. The labs can be difficult and the lab exams, if you have a good memory you can pass. He gives you two days to study and sometimes is not enough. Tests are very hard even if you study.
This class is only for geology nerds. If you don't much abot this topic you will struggle. The exams are super hard and the two last labs on Topographic maps are ridicolus. Does not give much extra credit. Have to memorize rocks for quizes. This is not a class to get an A. Half of the class drop out and people were failing. This hard class.
Do NOT miss a class - you can fall behind quick. He gives amazing notes, and he is very willing to help anyone who is struggling with understanding. AWESOME instructor!
Willing to work with you. He is very helpful
Very good teacher, writes the notes out on the board so it is easy to follow along, just hard to catch up if you miss a class. explains things very clearly and has many things to show you visuals. memorizing the rocks is pretty easy, he gives you two whole class periods plus extra time to help. i highly recommend this if you need a science credit.
Very enthusiastic during lecture and makes the three hour class go by extremely fast. I'm surprised his rating isn't higher because he truly cares about teaching geology and his students. He really gets into the topic he is teaching and although I had no interest in Geology before this class I would highly recommend this professor!
Very smart guy, could probably make more $ working for an oil company or something but LOVES to teach and it shows. You don't have to buy a book and there is zero homework, go to class and take notes and you will get the grade.
One of the better teachers this place has to offer. You can just tell that he really enjoys his job. Book isn't needed for the class, but if you miss a class and don't have someone to give you notes, you'll be in trouble. Quizzes and exams come directly from the lectures. Go with this guy if you need to take a lab class.
This professor is really into his job, which makes him really good! Lots and LOTS of notes. But.. thats college? However, LONGG lectures VERYY boring..hard to understand unless u really really pay attention.. def not a blow off class.. BIO might be better if you need a lab credit DONT take this class! You will suffer of boredom and lack of interest
I love this proffesor. He loves his jobs and is willing to help you with anything. Deffinantly a great class to take. He does offer a few extra credit trips which are fun. Dont knock till youve tried it!
I loved this class! He is the nicest person ever. I had no interest in NATS before this class and now I want to take another class! BEST CLASS EVER
Mr. Schafer was amazing! He has so much passion for his profession. He was willing to help all students! I would surely take him again if I needed a science course.
Awesome! Very clear and makes everything interesting and understandable. He is easily approachable, before, during, and after class. Take notes word for word and you will easily pass the class. I needed another science class I would definitely take his class. This is my last class for my Bachelors and his is in the top 5 of all my professors
Such an amazing professor! He truly loves what he does and it shows. Willing to help with anything and incredibly easy to approach. I would take him for any other science class that he teaches!
Mr. Schafer is nice, funny, and a great professor. He gives you all the notes we need for the test and helps you if you need it. The only problem is it is a hard class. Make sure you know the material inside and out or else you will probably fail.
Prof. Shafer was great; His class is a bit challenging. No need for book, but be prepared to write lots of notes and do long study guides! It will benefit you, plus he also will answer any questions on the study guide for you if you ask. Fun and great class - learned a lot and made a 3 hour class seem short. Very personable and entertaining too:)
I loved this class!! Mr. Schafer is so nice and always willing to help you. He also gave our class an extra credit option which I appreciated. All of his lectures are very interesting and hes very passionate about what hes teaching which made it a fun class.
I could sing this man's praises for ages. Very gneiss- I mean, nice (heh). Honestly, the greatest prof. I've encountered in both the CC and university level. Always willing to help, relatively challenging, and encourages students to grow intellectually. Enthusiastic lectures, often genuinely fun. This guy is Dead Poets Society for Geology.
Took this class for astronomy, but only spent a week on it. Tests were extremely difficult and I'm an all A student. Study guides weren't a help. Got a B, dropped my GPA. Most students were C or below. His lectures are repetitive, saying things 5x as he writes. Exhausting and boring. He's quirky and spent 3/4 of class on ROCKS. Would not recommend.
Took this class for astronomy, but only spent a week on it. He spent 3/4 of class on rocks. Tests were extremely difficult and I always did the study guides. His lectures are repetitive, and not all material from guide is covered. Never used the textbook, because lectures were different material. You can't miss class.
I took this class during the summer, so it was only 4 weeks long. I felt the tests were very easy (all multiple choice and the scores were curved). He makes the material seem a lot more interesting, and you can tell he loves what he does. He is very clear about what will be on the tests, and I love that he hand writes the notes on the board
Awful teacher. Very rude and belittling if you ask a question. I'm a straight A student and this class ruined my gpa. Would not recommend to anyone. If you didn't show up to class he docked your grade and if you did show up to class you still didn't get participation points.
Such a great guy! Exams are straight out of the notes and he provides a study guide to follow, but you will only receive good grade if you actually study what he provides, which isn't very difficult to do. I would take this class again just because of how much I enjoyed his little sound effects during lecture!
Although this man is a great geology professor, he is very caught up in his own beliefs about Climate change, which I would be fine with if it wasn't pushed on me. Also, if you ask a question that corrects him, he will pretend he knew the answer and make you look dumb
What can I say about Carl (he's pretty laid back about what name you address him by). Got me into Geology. He's not just here for the paycheck either, he does this because he loves it. Super cool to have off to the side chats about nature with. Will take as many classes of his as I can while I'm at MCC. Textbook is NOT required for this class.
Awesome professor. If you're interested by geology or don't want to take chemistry, this is for you.
Carl is by far the best professor I've had at MCC. His class actually made me change my major (I'm a geology major now). He is very helpful not only with the class but he help me and my fellow students with our future academic goals within geology. Overall a great guy and inspirational teacher.
Awesome professor. Loves what he teaches and teaches what he loves and you can see and expect that from his lectures. Enthusiastic about geology and it shows and makes you love it too because of his lectures. Book not required- he gives you everything you need so TAKE NOTES ON EVERYTHING. Not incredibly tough but obviously study. Recommended!
Tests were extremely difficult and I'm an all A student, study guides were helpful. Got a B +, which dropped my 4.0GPA, with only 2 classes left to graduate. His lectures were interesting and thought provoking. He's passionate and very knowledgeable, other than my grade, I thought he was awesome. I would recommend him!
THE LABS ARE VERY VERY VERY VERY CHALLENGING!!! BUT, the tests aren't to bad though. STUDY the STUDY guide and get sleep before his class you will need it to understand what is going on the the class and in labs. I would probably not take this class again but I would probably take is physical geology class. (GEOG-1140) he is better in the geology..
I took professor Schafer last year while attending Macomb and his class left a lasting impression on me. He is tough but fair and his enthusiasm makes learning the material interesting! Fantastic professor and great person. Would recommend to all
he's an honest and decent teacher. quite entertaining as well.
He's a great teacher. I have never done very well in the science courses but geology with him a has been fairly easy. His passion for the subject helps alot!
Professor Schafer is an incredible instructor! He is passionate and knowledge about the subject, and it shows in his lectures. The exams and quizzes are tough, so studying is a must! He grades strict too, but it is very fair. He makes lectures exciting, and fun! Don't miss class, you won't want to!
Great class but you must show up to class to pass this class. Its very time consuming, you must be able to study the material three to four times a week. Professor Schafer is great, he knows what he is talking about and makes the class very interesting. Show up to class and you will pass, he very strict on tardies
Carl is a great teacher. You learn a ton! Labs and tests are a bit on the difficult side but they're doable. Also, all the study guides for geology can be found online.
I had a 3 hour class, 2 of the 3 hours we spent taking notes that were done on the blackboard. Doesn't provide notes if you miss class. If you enjoy science you will like him, if not don't take him.
great teacher really tries to make rocks fun but he teaches for a solid 2 hours out of 3 and lets face it rocks are boring. lots of work and boring class but great guy
Super punny & nice. Loved the class
Absolutely a wonderful guy. I'm actually sad that I'm done with his class, but I may go on a summer field trip that he offers. He truly wants every single student to succeed and genuinely cares for you. Put in the work and you will do well. The labs and exams are pretty tough, so keep up with studying. Would 100% take again!
Really great professor. This is my second time taking him for a class and I would take him again for a third time if needed. He knows what he's talking about and truly cares about his students, and you just do not see that very much anymore. As long as you study, you will do very well in this class.
His course made science far more interesting for me but his tests were not easy to get a high grade on, so you have to study well in advance for them. Your grade is based a few labs during the semester and a test for each unit of study, so there is no homework. He's a funny professor and teaches with enthusiasm, so I would take his class again!
You will not need a text book. He gave out handouts for every topic he covers during lecture. Saved me $160. His lectures can go on in length, but the topics are important. He test more from lecture, so take good notes. He writes everything down on Screen or black board. I will take him again.
Schafer is a pretty cool guy. He definitely made his lectures interesting, and they're pretty lengthy. His exams are basically his lectures, so make sure to pay attention and take good notes. His exams are really hard, so make sure to study!
Professor Schafer keeps it interesting. He gives you his time and wants you to give the class your time. Doesn't play the late to class or using cell phones which I appreciated. Not a real easy class but he is accessible and has quiz and exam reviews where he will answer any of the exam questions which he gives you in advance. Helps wherever he can
I seriously love this guy. Cares about his students, and has a genuine love for what he teaches. His class has made me want to travel the world. Dont plan on ever getting out of class early - youll go the full time youre scheduled. No phones during lecture AT ALL, and just study. He makes this class very fair. Very sweet and approachable guy.
So I took Professor Schafer last semester and let me just say the guy takes the class VERY seriously. His lectures are agonizingly long and boring. You will be lucky to come out of his class with a low B. He doesn't offer any extra credit and his exams are VERY, VERY difficult.. my GPA took a huge hit solely cuz of this class. Avoid him if you can!
Do not take this guy.. Class is extremely boring and he grades you as if you are a geology major. He doesn't hold back on grading.. Getting a good grade in his class takes more effort than this class is worth.. take my advice and find an alternative to Prof Schafer
The nice thing about this class is no homework, just really long lectures on boring topics. Labs and exams are pretty tough so you have to pay close attention to his lectures but no book is needed. The nicest most genuine professor i've ever had, he truly cares about his students and their sucess. Also very passionate about geology.
I would highly recommend Prof Schafer. He throws in lots of life wisdom. The lab experiments and exercises are hard, but the quizzes are relatively easy. Overall I got a C or C- on the labs, and an A on the quizzes. Besides astronomy I don't find the natural sciences that interesting, but he made the class fun. There is no math in ESCI 1210.
Prof Schafer is one of my favs!! He really does care about every student and wants everyone to succeed. He gives you a review guide before every exam and its basically the same questions so just study that. He makes geology interesting with his funny jokes. Not as hard as all the other comments on here say it is! Just dont be lazy.
Carl is amazing-Explanation:first 2 hours of his class are lecture, no phones or talking allowed after lecture its free game his tests are easy he gives you a choice on review day to either stay after lecture or leave, stay and ask him every question on his hand out, ull get every answer to the test, lab exams are even easier & no book needed easyA
Prof. Schafer is very enthusiastic and has a great sense of humor. The lectures felt never ending, but he always kept it interesting and made sure you understood the information. Excellent professor and great class. Take notes, don't skip class and study hard.
Carl Schafer was my first geology professor before I made my transfer to a major university as a geology undergrad. He opened the door for me to pursuit something that has taken me all over the country for school and for work. If you are planning on taking his class, do it. You won't be sorry you did.
4 week summer class was a great choice. Schafer is kind of lecture heavy but he is really funny and nerdy and he keeps you interested. No quizzes. His tests are easy just do the study guide, it's easy to memorize. Labs are a big part of your grade so you have to attend class they were kind of annoying but pretty easy. Straight forward easy class.
Lectures are very interesting better than Bill Nye! Labs can be tricky but tests are very easy if you do the study guide!!! Prof Schafer is an endless source of interesting knowledge! Will be taking his resource sustainability class!!
Professor Schafer is the best teacher. he's very passionate about geology and cares for his students. his class isn't a blow off you have to study and show up to his class to pass but its a very interesting class! enjoyed having him as a teacher
Very nice professor, he is really nice and kind. Only downfall is that if you don't study hard you won't pass though. Lots of students received C or lower. You do labs every class, but you never do it alone.
Very nice professor as long as you stay on his good side. You CANNOT talk or text in class or he will embarrass the crap out of you. The study guides for the exams, did not help at all. Labs are easy and with a partner, but you have to go to every class or you miss the labs. Quizzes are off the labs which are easy. Makes the 3 hour a day, flow good
Great Professor, very, very knowledgeable. This was my first on campus class in years. I didn't know that to expect. I work long ten hours days so I came to class after work. Professor Schafer kept my attention EVERY SINGLE class. He knows his stuff. You have to study for the test but if you review your lecture notes it's all right there. Loved it
He's a bit of an oddball, but he REALLY loves rocks and explains the information well. Attendance is mandatory, tests and lab quizzes are pretty easy if you study. Really nice guy, but hates cell phones and any disturbances.
Prof Schafer is a funny, passionate professor. He hands out packets for each section he teaches. These are the notes. You do note taking for 2 hours with a break after each hour then you do the lab. His lecture style is very engaging and fun. The labs aren't easy but not hard and you work in groups. He's quite funny and helpful. I highly recommend.
Prof Schafer was my first geology professor and honestly, I couldn't have asked for someone better. I took him three semesters in a row, i.e. one year. That is how much I enjoyed his class. He's very knowledgable and passionate about his work. He has a great way of lecturing that keeps you attentive for the most part. Not an easy A, but real close.
By far best professor i've had. His lectures are so interesting and kept me engaged all semester. Wish he taught another class that I could take. My favorite Prof yet. Theres no homework and everything is done in class. Don't skip because taking notes on the lectures is crucial to doing well in the class.
Very contradictory with lecture material when the tests come
Just be ready to write 5 pages of notes each class. Hes not clear of what he is trying to say.
He was a fine professor. His tests are a bit heavy but study hard
Biggest tip I can give you is speed his voice up during the lectures! I put him on like 1.5 speed and he sounds like he is talking at a normal speed! He is a really good professor and he is really passionate about rocks. This class takes some studying but buddy up and you will be fine. There are a lot of labs but you get too have partners! :)
He's a nice guy, but this class was honestly pretty difficult for an introductory course. Exam's and quizzes are not easy, so you will really need to study to do well in this course. Note: I took this course in-person before Covid, so it may have gotten easier!
Easily the best professor Ive had so far. SUPER chill, enjoyable, genuine guy who is so passionate about what he teaches. Outside of the classroom, it is quite lecture heavy but as long as you do your notes you will be just fine. Group labs are entertaining as well. Seriously cannot preface enough how great he is.
He is a very nice and excellent guy as a human. He loves all students and care about students. But the problem is this class is really hard comparing it as introductory class. So, if you are not a science guy, you need lot of extra effort to pass this class. Thank you.
Carl was awesome. His class was one you look forward to going to. Field study portions of the class were the best as you learned so much more from him.
Prof. Schafer was great and very knowledgeable but the course itself was extremely difficult and he is a tough grader. Tests were difficult because of trick questions but if you do the study guide you will be fine. Labs were difficult and really made you think. Overall I would recommend this course/professor but expect to put in some work!
Mr. Shafer is a great guy, extremely intelligent and funny. His lectures are time-consuming but he is really passionate about what he teaches and gives good feedback. The labs are fairly easy if you watch your lectures, the tests are a bit difficult. I loved this class because it was a good balance of learning and not a very time-consuming class.
Professor Schafer is truly a great man. This class definitely required attention and effort, but was relatively clear and straightforward. He provided all of the info that you needed to know to pass, you just have to put effort in. Despite that, it is obvious he cares and loves what he does. He is kind to his students and is invested in them.
Crazy attendance and late policy, if you get three of either you get a bunch docked off your exam. He is a good lecturer, they're easy to understand. The labs felt really hard, he does zero practice problems for any lab and the lectures don't easily translate to labs. Also does not do + or - grades, you get a 90%, you get an A.
I was nervous about this 8 week hybrid class, but honestly it is designed for your success if you pay attention & follow through the lectures. The study guide is helpful for the exams. Make sure to review it a ton before the tests!!! I learned a lot in a short 8 weeks, which is awesome.
This professor is nice and is great as a person. However, this class is pretty difficult for it being an introductory course. If you are good at science you will probably be fine
TAKE THIS CLASS WITH CARL!!! He's literally the nicest and funniest professor ever. I took his hybrid class and only had to attend class once a week. All the lectures were online videos and the labs were in person. This class was a breeze and there is no final exam. Also he did not make you buy a textbook which was so nice.
Professor Schafer was awesome; however, my couple complaints are his lectures were a little unclear and you CANNOT miss, especially for hybrid. The labs sometimes didn't really help with the lab questions, but he is pretty good about making it clearer if you ask. He let me make up a lab, but you have to be persistent with asking.
Schafer was a wonderful professor, the ICA's as he calls them will bring you down slightly. There's only 2-5 questions of each one, most of them having 3 questions. If you got one wrong, its an automatic D. He is super lenient. He is harsh on attendance, however, if you just talk to him and explain the situation, he is very understanding.
I liked taking professor Schafer's course. He was very passionate about the material he teaches, funny, and engaging. Although, there is not much leeway when it comes to grades. A couple points off here and there really adds up. I would recommend sitting by reliable people who you can collaborate with on labs.
I took Earth science with a lab as a hybrid course. About three lecture videos each week to do on your own time, then once a week we meet in lab to complete the lab assignment with a group. Three exams, not super hard but crucial for your grade since lab assignments aren't worth much. Professor Schafer was really nice and helpful.
This professor was one of the best professors I've ever had. He is extremely passionate about geology and he loves educating people on it. He develops a nice bond with all his students and cares. As long as you put full work into his class and always engage you will do well in this course if you are a hardworking student.
Has a talent for teaching and is very intelligent. Very lecture heavy and quite strict on attendance. I personally found the class easy, however students did struggle. Does go on politically driven rants occasionally and is quite vocal about where he stands. However, a very good teacher and knows his stuff!
Super super laid back prof, always there to help when you wanted it, the information was NOT difficult to learn/retain. If you study even a couple hours for an exam you should be fine. Lectures, at least for hybrid, were short and interesting. No Lab book only lecture. Can take with heavier class load. Don't be late!! 10/10
I really enjoyed Carl! I always found his lectures to be engaging and very easy to follow along and understand. His tests go off of a study guide for the most part (to my memory). I'm sure if I had studied for them I would have had a better grade LOL. But otherwise, it was a great class and he is an amazing teacher.
Professor Schafer's class is challenging but manageable. The lectures are clear, but it's crucial to attend labs and use the study guide. unstuck AI and ChatGPT were lifesavers for exam prep. Overall, a solid course if you're willing to put in the work.
Best professor at Macomb! He cares about all his students and wants everyone to succeed. I took the hybrid class so lectures were online and labs on campus. No textbook was required but there are a lot of notes to print out. He also allowed us to use notes on every test.
I found this class very difficult but Carl was a great professor. He's very down to earth and was very easy going. I was unable to make 2 exams and he moved them for me with no problem. If you don't want to attend class, this is not the professor. Constant ICA/Labs/Notes, you will get behind and he will drop your grade an entire letter after enough
He is very passionate about what he does and his lectures are never boring. I loved his class and wish I could take more classes taught by him!!
I took his hybrid class, so we would only meet 1 time a week which wasn't bad. There are only 3 exams in the class, and we would watch the lectures during the week and then go in person for the labs. I took him for earth science. Overall he's a chill guy and I would take him again.
Very nice, labs were straight forward and was always there if you need help.
Helpful and understanding.
by far one of, if not the best science related class I've had. as long as you pay attention to lectures the labs will be fun and gives you hands on experience for many skills. just don't overestimate yourself or underestimate the rock identification labs. this class was 100% the reason i decided to go into geology as a future profession.
Real Summary: 10/10 lectures, 5 group projects, 5/10 exams (does not reflect most of the material you will learn until the last exam. study for a week at the minimum), very old fashion, highest grades for exams were posted for the whole class: Exam 1 (92 highest, 75 average), Exam 2 (85 highest, 72 average), Exam 3-4 (90 highest, 78-80 average). :D
Only 3 exams, none follow the study guides or labs. He doesn't respond to emails, very unreliable, expects you to put class over everything, takes things way too seriously. Don't recommend taking him.
As far as Professors go he is part of the gold standard. Truly cared and wanted everyone of us to do well. He understands this class may be harder for some than others but if you listen, watch the lectures, and show up you will make out with credit and more than likely a good grade too.
Schafer was one of the best profs I've had at MCC so far! Really engaging lectures, followed by fun labs. Gives a study guide for each exam, and they follow pretty closely to the actual test. I only say that the difficulty was average and not easy because you do have to study for exams, but even if you don't the material is fairly retainable.
My favorite class this semester. He was very engaging and clearly is very interested and knowledgeable in the subject. You should be able to pass fairly easily as long as you pay attention during lectures. The labs were fun, and overall a good class.
10/10 would take this class again. I loved the hands-on aspect of the labs and how interactive his lessons are. When lecturing, he gives in depth demonstrations and acts out the topics he is covering, which I think is a very helpful teaching tactic. His lessons are old fashioned and he rarely had us using electronics.
