CONDESCENDING. Comments bordering on sexual harrassment. Frustrated wanna be UW prof. Rude and full of himself.
I feel this instructor really loves teaching. I found him to be very encouraging and helpful. this difficult material, but he does a very good job explaining difficult concepts. Follow his class notes and do his on-line quizzes, and by all means keep up with the material!
He has a passion for this stuff. Good sense of humor, and makes the material less intimidating. Thanks for making this painful class enjoyable!
great instructer loves his work and is fair. i would recommend him for any a&p class. he is very funny and so smart that by just being around him your bound greatness.

He loves to teach. Sometimes he gets off track, but he sure can explain difficult ideas. He treated us all pretty fairly. Tests are hard, but he curves. I'll take him again for A&P2.
Great teacher, very motivated to help students learn, fun but professional, worked at making a tough subject less intimidating, more applicable, and to help all students do well if they studied. Offered time freely to study groups, opening lab on Sats to let groups in to study, constantly encouraged use of study groups and gave tips on studying.
Easy to listen to, very helpful during office hours. Keeps things straightforward and clear. Willing to hear feedback and concerns. Great website with lots of pertinant information.
Carl is a great teacher! I had him for AnP 1 & 2 and both were very difficult, but I learned a ton! Lecture exams are very hard, no winging it here. Carl will answer any questions clearly, and his grading system is pretty fair.
Really good teacher. He will work with you until you understand. Comes up with helpful study tips too.
Loved Shuster! He was very willing to help when asked, and i could tell he actually cared about his students learning the material, not just memorizing it! :)
Professor Shuster is a good teacher. He is really invested in making sure we learn the material and giving us the tools to do so. Yes - it's a hard class - but it needs to be, this is some of the most important material we will learn for a health career. I learned so much and I am so glad that I took Professor Shuster's class.
I discovered that when a teacher says they care how you do, they mean it. I took what helpful things Carl was giving me and worked very hard at using them. Study skills that I never had as well as life skills that were hard to retrain myself at 38 and benefitted greatly with his guidance. I am very proud to say that A+P very hard and I did it.
Horrible, condescending professor. Tests at a far more difficult level than he teaches. Does not use clear terminology. Talks TOO MUCH during lab periods. If you want to spend way more time learning all of this on your own in the "learning lab" and with classmates, go ahead. but I heard that the team does a better job helping you out.
One of my favorite professors! Carl is extremely smart and does well with real world applications. His teaching style is comprehensible and intriguing. He also very much wants you to succeed! Always open for office hours and free to talk before and after class.
Good teacher. Hard but manageable. Best quality is that he is always willing to work with you to improve your grade if you so desire. Some of his lecture notes are a little confusing but he is always happy to clarify during office hours. You will learn a lot in this class!
Very Hard. However he will do everything in his power to help you. encourages you to come to office hours. You will learn a LOT in his class.
Tough professor, but one of the best you will find. Help is there if you look for it. Tons of resources available. If you're serious, you would do well to study with Shuster. If you're taking it just to get the prerequisite out of the way and don't really care about the subject matter, take it with someone else.
One of the hardest classes I have taken, but I truly LEARNED this stuff! He has put a lot of time in this subject and if you keep up and use his "tools" (webcasts, quizzes, etc.), you will succeed. Great teacher!
One of the hardest classes I have taken, but I truly LEARNED this stuff! He has put a lot of time in this subject and if you keep up and use his "tools" (webcasts, quizzes, etc.), you will succeed. Great teacher!
Great teacher. Great online teaching/learning aids. Difficult class if you don't have background chemistry and science. Well worth my time as a student.
His lectures were scattered and unorganized. The most helpful aspect of his class are the online quizzes and videos. DO NOT rely solely on his lectures, read the textbook and take the quizzes!!!
Anatomy and physiology is a very interesting class. I learned quite a lot and this will be very useful, when I get into the nursing program. The tests really made me study harder and really think why I chose that answer.
Schuester clearly knew his stuff. He gives so many aids via his website! Those are a huge help if you take advantage of it. The labs were great! Definitely take him for general A&P. Difficult subject but he'll get you through it!
Extremely fun, approachable and funny, a hard professor for a hard course. He adheres strictly to his syllabus yet there is no excuse to fail the class as he has pretty much the whole course available online and whatever is not there is on the textbook. Students will learn a lot with him only if they truly care about the subject.
He's a great teacher, but you have to be willing to put in some time. He's fun, easy going, willing to answer questions, and does well teaching difficult material. His online materials are really useful and helped me to get through the course because I didn't purchase the testbook.
Great professor! If you are willing to learn, he will help you 100%. You have to put in time to learn it. He has extra materials online and his streaming videos are essential. I absolutely loved the class. It was a challenge, but well worth it. He is my all-time favorite teacher and I definitely recommend him.
This is an unusual professor and one you should not miss. He is enthusiastic about his material and manages to make it relevant and interesting to all of the students, no matter their level. He is knowledgeable, engaged, and fun. I looked forward to class every single day.
Took A&P 1 with the team, all I did was write papers Arghh! Took Carl in the summer; tough class, lots of work, but totally worth it. Great teacher, don't believe the rumors. I would totally take another class taught by him.
Shuster is a great professor who takes an obvious interest in the material that he teaches. His quizzes and tests are fair and taken right from material he presents. I found his written notes that you can buy in the bookstore the most helpful in preparing for tests, I actually didn't end up reading the book at all.
Carl is marvelously captivating and adds a welcomed touch of humor to a difficult class! He's extremely helpful when it comes to explanations, especially if you stop by during his office hours. He has his own A&P website with practice quizzes that are indispensable and tailored to his tests. I'd recommend his class to anybody!
Carl is knowledgable about the material and incorporates a lot of visuals into his lectures (which I found very helpful). His website is very thorough and includes videos which nicely supplement lecture and lab. He also has practice quizzes which correlate very closely with the quizzes and exams. He's also not afraid to help outside of class.
Carl is a very awesome teacher! Not only does he really knows his stuff, he really has a lot inveseted in heloing his students! He really wants his students to succeed! He gives us so many tools and practically begged us to come to his office for help! He was very accecible! I would highly recomend him!
Dr. Shuster is a very good teacher. I learned a lot from his class. He is not the easiest professor and you have to keep up with your work, but if you put in the time you will see the results. His online tutorial's are very helpful and I learned so much from that. I recommend taking his class. You will be very pleased you took his class, I was!
Carl definitely knew his stuff. He provided online videos and quizzes to help prepare you for the lecture and lab. It's very difficult to keep up with him after a couple of weeks. His lecture exams were extremely difficult and detailed. He's a pretty good teacher, but it's a pretty tough class.
Mr. Schuster is an awesome instructor with a great personality! Super smart guy with tons of resources and wants his students to succeed. Tough class, but if you need to take it, take it with Mr. Schuster!
He is great at preparing you for your higher level Nursing etc. expectations. Definetly go to his office hours for the first two or three weeks. He will review your notes and show you how to adapt them to pass his tests. This helped me greatly in lecture. The Lab is a bit tougher. He will help you though. Get a group to quiz with.
Presented the information in interesting and engaging manner. Great passion for teaching. He makes the course material interesting and goes out of his way to help his students. Best instructor I've ever had! His use of technology is very effective! His classroom presence and lecturing are superb. Prof Shuster is an asset to MATC.
Some times gets off topic, then has to speed through material at the end of units.
Great teacher overall. Extremely hard to comprehend all the information presented, especially when he gets off topic then rushes through the information. Exam questions are cryptic and quite misleading. He seems to forget that although he's taught this class for years, it's our first time taking it. :/ I'd still recommend him though
You will learn a lot from him. The only professor I've met in my college carrer that will take time to sit with students to understand how to be successful in COLLEGE! Keep up with your work, and get involved with a STUDY GROUP!
Please update your website. It's not fully functional and you cant access certain materials with out a password; that doesnt work. It would be really helpful if the website was fully usable across operating systems.
Carl Shuster is one the best instructor I never found. He teaches very well the material and also the study skill the student need to have in order to be successful in his class and also in the student future career. It was a blast to have him during the last two semesters.
A&P is A&P, don't expect it to be easy. Carl is an excellent professor he knows his s#@t. He has high expectations but is realistic. If you want to succeed he'll get you there. Don't question it, just have faith. Carl is more than a professor, he's a mentor to me. Couldn't ask for a better professor, anyone who says different is in the wrong field.
Carl is an amazing prof for A&P. He will challenge & motivate you to refine your study habits, and test your grasp of the information presented as well as your ability to make leaps to apply your knowledge to clinical applications. He is not an easy A, or even an easy B. But he is fair and will prepare you for UW-Madison. P.S. Margaritas!
Carl Shuster is a great professor. He pushes you to work hard and his teaching style helps information stick with you well past the end of class. Make sure to stay ahead of the material and go to him for help. He definitely takes the time to explain things in more detail during his office hours and appointments.
The best A&P professor!
Professor Shuster requires you to stay on top of the material and know how to apply your knowledge, instead of simply regurgitating whatever he said (although there will always be a lot of memorization when dealing with anatomy). Provides a lot of support outside of class; shows he wants you to understand the material.
Carl is a great teacher! He is very cocky about what he does but he is good! I definitely recommend him to any A&P students!
Carl's class notes are a mess, constantly outdated and don’t match notes he uses in lecture. Also very careless when grading; always double check him! He doesn’t answer emails. He won’t answer your questions in person either. Talks down to students.
Carl is a great teacher! He sincerly cares about his students and wants them to excel. He will go the extra mile for students to help them suceed. He makes the material interesting despite how difficult the material is. Study, watch his videos and pay attention in lab! It isn't an easy class, but worth the hard work.
Shuster' website is a great resource. Lectures follow the online vids, however examples & details to focus on are discussed in class. Go to office hrs AFTER you've read and outlined his notes to ask educated questions. He will earnestly help you fill in the gaps. Don't be scareddislike him bc he's cocky; gain his respect by showing legit interest
Class is no cake-walk regardless of who you take, but Carl's teaching style worked better for me than TEAM TEACH (AP1). Main diff. is with Carl there's no hw, but you have to be ready for pop quiz any day of the week. Hated it at first, then realized this was to my advantage and has practice quizzes online. Guys is funny, interesting and helpful.
Makes a lot of grading mistakes and through his excel grade spreadsheet prevents students from being able to double-check or verify the accuracy of their grades. Carl also makes inappropriate jokes about having students bribe him with money and other favors in return for good grades.
Know-it-all. Very helpful in the beginning with teaching correct habits for taking notes and reading textbooks. Overall very knowledgable. Has extra handy materials for students. Very clear on expectations. Lectures through slides and has videos to watch outside of class for lectures and always for labs. Has printed lecture notes from bookstore.
Very cool guy, laid back, and knowledgeable. He is a tough teacher though. He is definitely teaching college so don't expect anything less. The material is difficult but he knows it front to back. He even wrote the lab manual. Funny guy but with high expectations. Confident and cocky but you will definitely learn from him. Has a soft side.
Carl is extremely knowledgeable, and a great teacher. You can tell he is passionate about what he teaches, and about making sure his students understand the material. He also is a great resource for academic advising. He has helped me immensely in figuring out my future career path, and what schooling I need to get there. An excellent instructor.
I was told by friends not to take this class. in my opinion he was absolutly amazing. Wish I had taken him for the first section as well for I would have learned so much more. He took the time to help me understand things when I needed clarity . He's a great person with wonderful experiences to share.
Carl was very clear in what we were expected to know for the exams, how in depth he wanted us to study and what online videos to watch for more clarity or studying. Tests were tough, but doable. Website videos, notes and quizzes were a great study tool!
His class requires a certain amount of dedication from his students. He teaches for the test. Attendance isn't mandatory, but he gives a lot of 'pop' quizzes and you will miss the material you need to learn for the quiz. Once you learn how he wants you to take the class, and the amount of time you need to commit, it becomes easy.
Carl is a challenging but fair professor. He has a very direct, open, and honest communication style. He is very much willing to help with class or career questions if you ask. He takes time in lab to help reinforce material and see how people are doing. He keeps lecture interesting and pretty funny. His website and videos are helpful supplements.
Carl is a wonderful professor. He tells you like it is but gives you constructive criticism. He has a good sense of humor & makes lectures interesting. He also supplements lectures & lab with videos that are very helpful to learn from & review. Show up, take notes, & study hard for his exams. (Which one is not like the other? Choose it. :) )
Highly recommended!
Shuster is a great teacher. He's passionate about what he teaches, and really cares about his students. Throughout my 2 semesters with him, he not only has been an amazing teacher, but a mentor to me as well. He's been instrumental in helping me expand my academic horizons, and I will continue to seek him out for advice in the future.
Great teacher and very smart. Take his advice and you will do great. Don't skip lecture, watch his lab videos and DO HIS ONLINE QUIZZES!! His class is not easy but if you put in the time, you learn so much. If you find yourself struggling, talk to him and he will show you the way. Highly recommend. Would take him again.
Shuster is a great professor. I'd take another class with him anytime. He's tough because he cares. He wants students to earn their grade so that they are well prepared for future endeavors. He responds best to confidence and effort--if you need/want help with something he's more likely to help you if you do your homework first.
I took AP1 and AP2 with Shuster because I was looking for consistency in grading and testing. Carl Shuster explains the material well and is available for help if asked. DOn't expect homework; expect quizzes and working hard for your grade. 4 lecture exams, 3 lab practicals, 14 quizzes, 1 comprehensive final. Powerful courses. Learned a lot
I would highly recommend taking Shuster for both Anatomy 1 and 2. He tells you exactly what to expect for the quizzes, tests, and lab practicals. His classes are tough and studying is a must, but I have never learned so much in a class before!
Overwhelming at first, but in A&P1 and 2 I ended up really respecting Carl as a person/professor & enjoying his class. I talked to many students who preferred him to the Team. A&P made me fall in love w/ my major! Key is to organize what you need to know. Get a binder, highlighters, a study group, & for the love of god, GO TO OPEN LAB & PRACTICE.
Keeps the material interesting, knows his stuff and is pretty funny. The pop quizzes are easy if you take the online quizzes. Toughest part of the class is probably tests + lab practicals but if you study and attend regularly you'll do alright. Definitely make use of his website: notes, videos and lab guides are all there. Learned a lot overall
He is a eat Teacher but very tough.
Overall, very knowledgeable professor, and provides students with lots of resources. He is however incredibly offensive and belittles his students to motivate them.
Carl was one of the best professors I have ever had. He sets the class up for success with his online web page. There are practice quizzes for Lec/Lab, & helpful handouts & study guides. You will be able to watch individual Lec/Lab videos that you can pause and re-watch at any point. Advice: CONSISTENTLY use the learning lab & quiz your classmates!
I was skeptical of taking Carl, I am so glad I did he will work with you check your pride at the door be willing to be told your wrong take it on the chin and then he will show you the path to success. AP is not an easy class but with all the material listed in other comments he is your best choice.
Very good teacher. Recommended.
He is best teacher I have even seen. His class is so interesting and he is knowledgeable. He always gives some good suggestions about your study and your career options. I like him because he always gives students encouragement no matter who you are! Choose him if you really care about yourself.
A&P is sort of 'life style' course. You will spend a lot of time in the study lab working with other students. It has a heavy work load and one cannot fall behind. There will be no opportunity to catch up. C. Schuster spends extra time with students to get them on the right track to study his course. I learned a great deal.
Carl is truly a great professor! He definitely doesn't make anything easy for you but if you attend the lectures, you'll be prepared. Careful to not miss quizzes because they can really make or break your grade! Don't be that person that shows up for a quiz and leaves after.. you look like a damn fool!! Anyways, tough grader but always clear.
Shuster can seem like a jerk early on but he cares and I really liked him and his class. New students do need to learn how to do school and what to listen to (and ignore sometimes). You have to work hard, especially in lab (DO NOT SLACK), and you really should stay for lecture after the quizzes (which matter a LOT)- you'll get a better grade.
I have some pretty mixed feelings about this professor. He is incredibly knowledgable about what he is teaching and is very intelligent in general. He is very enjoyable to listen to and not boring at all. However, his sense of humor is not for everyone and I felt that he was very unapproachable and can be very rude when students ask for help.
Carl is an amazing professor. He does tell you exactly what he thinks and it can hurt your feelings sometimes but he is only telling you it to help you out. He really wants you to succeed in the class and if you ask for help he is more than willing to help you. This class is very difficult but not because of Carl, its because A&p 1 & 2 are.
One of the best teachers Ive ever had! Not everyone can take his attitude; very sharp, but honest, makes you learn and think logically. Procrastination is not gonna work. Take your time, dont even try to fall behind with the material or you will fail. Ask Carl for help when you need, go to the SI sessions frequently, study in a group.
To A&P 1 students, Attend Carl's special session outside his regular class. He will go over how to study and take notes.2) You MUST attend SI and form study group. SI will prepare you for Lab quiz and practical to get you 'A'. 3) you MUST watch lab videos before your lab session. 4) KNOW THE CONCEPT FOR LECTURE EXAMS and quizzes. DONT FALL BEHIND
I took Carl for A&P 1 and 2. You are going to get out of this class whatever effort you put into it. If you expect hand holding, do not take Carl. Being comfortable with studying and studying a lot is important. Also if you have and SI use them! Be prepared to be in open lab several times a week. Take quizzes seriously!
Knowledgeable teacher but very hard test
Carl is the best teacher to take for A&P1. You will not regret anything. He respect students and treat them like his own kids.
Awesome Professor, but exams are very hard! Lots of quizzes to boost your grade which is nice.
AP1 & 2 if you make it, will be among the hardest classes you take. Carl's website: lab guides & WORDLISTS, LECTURE NOTES & online quizzes- these are for in-class quizzes. Lab-25% lecture-75%, quizzes add up to be a lot. Use any resource, but tests come from his materials. Keep up, over prepare 4 future mistakes. KNOW everything WELL. Sink or swim.
Hard class (LOTS to learn), but very easy to go through, just: COME TO LECTURE, DO study groups, SPEND time in learning lab, USE his website!! Everything you need and more is available- I still remember a lot of what I learned thanks to his feedback and my study group(: best way to study: Lecture notes for Exams and Lab Guides for Practicals!!
