Great lectures!
Carl is the best teacher on this campus! It's obvious that he puts a lot of time and energy into the class. He's very approachable.
Grades way too hard on essays!!!!!!
Mr. Sjovold is awesome. His lectures are really fun and he is funny. Good stuff!
Pros: Great prof. Doesn't require that u come to class,ie: no attndnce points; if u skip, you just miss tons of material. EZ to talk to& ask questions, very straightforward. I luvd his lectures; took two of his classes. No hwk just essays. Cons: Don't bother buying the book, u don't use it at all.
not that much homework thats a plus. you could tell that he dooes his homework
He's a bit tough on grading papers. Other than that, he is good.
Dr. Sjovold is one of the most interesting dedicated teachers I have ever had the opportunity to come across. It is obvious that he has a passion for the subject in his lectures which are very structured and organized. It is easy to put in the extra work for a teacher who does the same.
Best Teacher I have had at SCC
I had taken this class before with another professor and hated it. Carl made this class fun and exciting, he was always cracking jokes and making us laugh, asked the class a lot of questions to get us involved. I passes with ease, take him, he is great!
He's very hardworking in preparing his lectures. His lectures are clear and well-constructed. He's always on schedule thru out the whole semester. He gives out 2 essays and 2 exams, each worth 100 points. The midterms are quite easy if you study his notes: 5/10 IDs and 1/2 essay. But he grades essays hard, better to meeet him to see your draft.
Very knowledgable & demonstrated a willingness & enthusiasm for sharing knowledge. Prior to attending his class I had no interest in History. He was very mild-tempered & fostered an environment condusive to learning. graded fairly & considerate to special circumstances. I recommend this professor.
Hands down, the best teacher. He levels with his students and makes his classes informal yet very conducive to learning.
Fabulous professor! Great lecture style, clear, interesting, packed with great info, very patient, loves to ask and be asked questions. Class designs their own midterm & final (via in-class study guides) so no surprises on exam. Some short 2 page essays. Be ready to take LOTS of notes! His lectures are so packed with info, I never opened my book.
Great teacher, he follows an outline and is very organized. Feel free to aSK ANY QUESTIONS, He is very helpful and clerar with his assigments... yes he grades hard on his essays but you can have him see them ahead of time... LIkes good gramar!
Very clear, great lectures. Fun teacher good humor. both essays were difficult, test are ez.
Dr. Sjovold is the best teacher I've ever had. On a personal level, he has always made time for me when I needed to talk with him. He's been the most supportive and gracious professor I've had the fortune to take a class from. As far as the class goes, his lectures are clear, and he has an almost theatrical delivery. It's entertaining, as well as thought provoking. As long as you pay attention, it's hard not to succeed in his class.
i love his class. the way he teaches is pretty much by story and you have to write pretty fast in order to get all the stuff down. his tests are pretty easy he'll pretty much tell u whats on there.
To make my point short and sweet.... this professor knows what he is talking about and makes students feel like they walked away with piece of history our minds.
if youre looking for an easy GE class, this is NOT it. lots of reading, disc. posting every week, 3 pg essay every week and exams are very indepth. i did all the reading, got A's on my papers but F's on exams. NOT REC. 4 ONLINE!
I did not like this instructor from the start. He was NOT helpful at all. I took his online class and when I asked questions he would reply in a rude manner. I did my readings and assignments, but he takes off points for every little thing. I dropped this class before he could stick me with a bad grade. AVOID him at all cost!!!
One of the best professors I've had.Lectures are clear and organized, got an A and never opened the text.Gives list of terms and possible essay question before test,no surprises.Grades hard on papers, but will spend any time he can with you to go over rough drafts. All around nice guy and good teacher, loves to be asked questions during lectures.
He is one of my favorite professors! He is funny, interesting, and knows what he's talking about. He lets you know what will be on the test. And he works with you on papers. I loved his class!
ive had many professors and i had carl a while ago... but he was really one of the best history teachers ive ever had. He really is interesting, and i actually enjoyed waking up and getting to his class because he had so many interesting facts he threw in. I compared it to watching the history channel, fun class.
This teacher is awesome. He sticks to an outlined lecture, and makes it very interesting. Your grade is based on four things. Two test, which are based on material actually covered in class, and two essays. He doesn't assign busy work like book assignments or geographical map assignments.
This is a GREAT teacher... you have four assignments and you go over everything you need in the lecture. i wouldnt even recomend buying the text book because the majority of the class never used it... if you want an interesting class take his.
Mr. Sjovold is really nice, easy on grading, and makes the class interesting. We had two tests, which consisted of essays, not multiple choice or fill in. We also had to turn in two 5 page papers based on books that we had to read. He went easy on grading them. I would recommend taking him. He really cares about his students.
if you don't speak good english, don't take him...no matter what you do, it's never good enough for him..
Professor Sjovold is by no means an easy instructor, but his lectures are awesome. The workload is fair as he tells you his expectations on the first day. The class consists of 2 exams and 2 essays. The textbook isn't necessary, unless you prefer to "see" the lectures.
I came into this class with doubts, I had never enjoyed History, let alone understood it! Carl's lectures were so well designed and detailed that I hardly had to use the textbook. The workload was fair, and there were never any surprises about the tests or essays that we were going to do. It didn't hurt that he was quite attractive as well :)
this teacher is very hard. BUT his class is very interesting. When you come to the lecture it feels as if you came to a story time. His grading is hard, hard tests. YOu have to really work for an A.
My thoughts have been echoed in previous posts from this term. Very interesting lecturer with a subtle sense of humor. Tests based on lecture, so be sure to take very detailed notes. Strict grading on papers; content and grammar! Oh, and so glad to know I'm not the only one who found him to be easy on the eyes.
Excellent, awesome, great, wonderful - and every other related adjective. I've had alot of History teachers and he's the best. He is the perfect teacher - laid back, yet organized. Engaging, funny, and just plain cool. Attendence wasn't even mandatory, but will help you in the end. We didn't use the book much. Do take him!
He is a great professor and i learned alot from his class. He has a great sense of humor and i promise you during his lectures you wont fall asleep. I am highly recomending this class, but make sure take good notes to be successful in his class.
Interesting, funny, and GREAT lectures!! The two exams (mid-term & final) are based on notes you take. So take good ones. I never even used the textbook. The papers are graded fairly and you can't turn in crap. He knows what to look for. I HIGHLY recommend this course. Every class meeting was fun and interesting.
Great teacher. Why anyone would leave a bad rating is beyond me. His class is interesting. You do have to put some effort into the class. He cares about his students and made history interesting for me.
Great instructor and cares about his students. If you want to be succesful in his class take good notes, and make sure your cell phone is off.
one of the best teacher of all time. hard class, lots of notes, lots of work. if you are a lazy student, and complaint too much in life do not take his class
Lectures entire class.take really good notes cuz that is what the test is based on.gives you keywords@ end of each lectures, then tests on 10 words for midterm&final;fairly easy, loved his class, make sure u read assigned books,2 take home essays on them, got a C only cuz didnt study well, but very enjoyable GREAT sense of humor EXTREMELY Helpful
Mr. Sjovold was a replacement for my history310 teacher and what a difference he makes. He encourages student involvement in class and takes time to answer our questions. Provides outline on board so it makes note taking easier and manageable. A good history teacher, but you have to do your own part to get an A. I would recommend him.
Best history teacher I've ever had!!! You do have to take notes, but I didn't even have to crack the book open because his lectures are all you need for the test.
Excellent, enjoyable teacher. He is very knowledgeable, interesting, and involved. Don't buy the textbook, just take good notes. By far one of my favorite teachers at SCC.
An incredible educator. He interests and motivates his students with clear lectures that invite participation. His structure enables you to take notes in a manner that will be useful come exams. A lot of weight is given to the two papers and two midterms but if you show up, take good notes and make an effort you will learn a great deal.
Carl is by far the best teacher I have ever had... He is smart, funny and interesting ... he loves history and makes every lesson a joy! If you are planning on taking U S History register for this class early! there are always people trying to add his class. Oh.. and have him proof-read your essays ahead of time you will be guaranteed an A- min.
not crazy about attendance, very helpful and loves to discuss things with class. tests are easy if u listen carefully and make notes during lectures. some essay questions are a bit too narrow. I had no troubles getting a B and I decided to choose history as my major.
Best History teacher I've ever had. He makes the topic so interesting, even the stories you've heard 20 times before. Very knowledgable. Helpful. Fair grader, and not physco about attendance and/or coming in 5 minutes late. Awesome.
Main textbook not required. Tests based on lecture. Side readings required.
Incredibly helpful and such a great speaker that I actually am actively engaged at 7:30 am.
Took this class online. He was by far one of the best teachers I've had. Anytime I needed help he was more than happy to discuss topics over the phone and help with papers. He was also prompt with grading; most papers were returned within 24 hrs after submitting papers. Great professor!
Very entertaining and taught me more than all of my previous history classes combined! And he is really cool and attractive.
My major is History and I wish I could take him for every single history class I need. I'm at Sac State now and I seriously want to go back to City just to take his classes for fun.
Great Professor, I had him online in the fall. Everything was straight forward and easy to follow, 3 page essay due each week. I could have done better, if not for my busy schedule. Dedicate alot of time to the course! He will work with you whenever you need help, and responds right away to emails. GREAT PROFESSOR. Wish I did better.
This teacher is great!! I had him for US History in Fall 2008... at 7:30am. If it were any other professor I wouldn't have gotten up in the morning, but he engages the class, he is really clear about the subject matter and he makes it interesting. TAKE THIS CLASS!!
One of the best teachers I've had. The way he delivers his lectures makes the subjects he is covering extremely interesting and you'll rarely feel bored. No HW, just two essays both based only on required 300 pg. books, so no research necessary. One mid-term and a final, both in class essays. Thats it. Don't buy the main book, just the small ones.
Great great great teacher!! He once came to class wearing converse and jeans! Soo funny too! Your grade consists of two papers and two tests.. At first, it seems that if only four things are my whole grade??? and you freak out.. but than you realize that there really easy. Come to class everyday because he gives you key terms.
he is pretty swell. lol. we have 4 essays.. first one is reallly hard. scond one was a breeze. 1 midterm. 1 final. lectures are addicting! discussions are my favorite part. the movies make me pass out though! lolll. seems easy.. someone tell me wats on the tests!!! lol. DO IT!!
An amazing teacher. I had him for History at SCC in 2008.
Great teacher! 7:30am 4 hist310. at first he seem mean but he's not he just doesn't like cheaters. There are only 4 assignments 2 five page essay's double spaced and a midterm and final.Don't even buy the main book he goes strickly off of lecture.I didnt even fully read the other 2 books and still got a B on both essays! Take him he's the best!
GREAT teacher, attendance is a must,or you will fall behind!Sticks to topic, lots of note taking.2 papers to write which are easy, and he will revise them before they are due. Tests are not bad,if you take good notes&study.Learn lots of things, but he is kind of hard.Fun guy and makes class interesting. Got a B!
Took his class b/c of the good ratings but was disappointed. Maybe he's better in class but what ever you don't take his online class! There's 3 page essays due every week, you have to buy 3 books (which you actually use), and no study guides or anything for the tests & he's a tough grader. I wrote more for this class than I did for ENG300.
This is my last semester at SCC and HIST 310 is one of those required classes! I'm so glad I took Carl's class. He is a dynamic lecturer! He is articulate and makes the material interesting. Don't miss the Thoreau lecture!!. I recommend taking his class. You won't be sorry. He's a fair grader. Be a diligent college student and you'll do fine!
by far the best history teacher you could ever get in your lifetime. history can't get any more fascinating than this! BIG ADVICE:can be a tough essay grader. seriously let him revise your papers, he fixes everything for you. his exams are easy as long as you put effort in listening to his lectures which should be no issue when it comes to carl's
The teacher isn't bad. His lectures are built like he is reading an essay out loud. His lectures ARE interesting though! its like listening to a story more than a lecture. I would take him for hist 311 and 310. Awsome dude. only 4 assignments and they are half decent.
You'll look back at your time at SCC and remember this professor and his class.
Dr. Carl is a great professor..He has an amazing ability to weave a story...He knows his stuff...One of the best teachers ever and isn't too hard on the eyes!!!
If you think you like history then take this class!!! His lectures are so interesting and he keeps everyone's attention, he truly is a real teacher. Dr. Sjovold will help you if you ask and make you a better writer and thinker. Class consists of 4 online quizzes, midterm/final (short answer and essay), 2 short papers and long paper.
His lectures are really interesting. I never took an interest in History but he knows how to lecture, it's like he's story telling. He's also funny. I aced the midterm and final but I got a B in the class. I'm sure I could have gotten an A if I put more effort into the essays. I highly recommend him!
An amazing professor. I have to agree with everyone else that his lectures are just simply amazing.
Professor Sjovold is the best history teacher I've ever had. He has an obvious passion for the subject and lectures in a way that is easy to comprehend. You do have to put in effort for your grade, but in the end you know that the grade you received is truly the grade you deserve.
4 online quizzes of 25 questions each (So-so), two essays (Really picky about structure), two in-class essays (midterm and final). His class lectures are well explained (he's got this thing that keeps you interested). At first I perceived him as really intimidating, then to discover he's a really nice person.
CARL IS AWESOME! I took his 7:30 am class and it was the only class that I actually wanted to pay attention in because he makes his lectures so interesting. The papers and quizes are not hard as long as you keep up on the readings and lectures. If you participate a lot in class he'll like you more. I love Carl!
I only took this class because I had to take a history class, but I left the class with a much greater interest and confidence in history! Carl is great & makes lectures fascinating in a way that sticks in your brain! My only complain is that the quizzes were based on the textbook, and that didn't follow along well with his lectures.
Carl is the most amazing teacher ever!!! His lectures unfold like a story. There are 4 online quizzes, 2 short papers & 1 long paper. The quizzes are 30 minutes long for 25 ?'s. The short & long essays you can go to his office & he will read your rough draft & give you advice on either how to make it better or that you did great. He is very helpful
Highly Organized. Use quotes from the documents in all your essays! Tests consist of 5 term identifications, one document essay question, and one broad essay question. He provides a list of terms that might be on the test daily.. write them down. Passed with an A so its possible and i'm Not a history major.. Highly recommended.. Great professor..
Best class I've ever taken at SCC! Highly recommended! AMAZING professor!!! In summer: 2-3p. essay ea week (strict on essay structure/grammar), 25 quest online quiz timed 30 min based on text, cummulative final w/ good study guide but a bizillion terms & essays to prepare to write on. Time-consuming but worth it! Take good detailed notes! FUN class
This was the most interesting class I have had yet. I learned a whole other side of world history. Best teacher by far. Final was interesting, you would need to understand the material to do good.
Great Teacher. students seriously need you read the book. She more into how to teacher than just blabbering on. More clear and organize professor i ever came across. It best to bring a recording device 'cause he lecture quite fast and rarely write down anything other than the subtopic of today's lecture.Seriously, a recording device is needed.
This professor knows his stuff and he is quite passionate which helps with the dry material you go over from time to time. By far my favorite class this semester and he give a great lecture every class.
He is an amazing teacher. It is mandatory to attend lectures, but they are so interesting, that you will want to go. He is funny, charismatic and really engages the class. The class is very organized, and he is clear about what you need to know. The papers are a little difficult, but he gives good feedback.
Best teacher I have had in college so far. his lectures are interesting and clear. work was relatively easy for me. If you are struggling on something he is willing to help you out. overall great class.
Took him for 300 and 310. Great professor. Know what is he is talking about. Attendance is mandatory. If you miss one day, you'll miss alot of notes. Essays are hard. But if you go to class you will not worry about the essays because it's straight from notes. Very specific with what he want. He is not a easy professor, but you will learn things.
I put down no interest in history prior to attending because history seems so boring, but dr sjovold makes his lectures so interesting! He is very clear and not boring in any way. Just take good notes and write down the key terms that he gives you. He seems strict because his voice is booming but he's really a cool guy. very nice, very helpful.
Great teacher, he makes all his lectures interesting. It is an semi-easy class if show up to class. Take advantage of his rough draft review for your papers. He cares about his students and as long as you talk to him he will try to help or work with you.
I have taken Carl a couple times now, he never disappoints. He seems like a really strict guy in the beginning of the semester, however hes a great professor that genuinely cares about his students. if something happens in your life, he understands and he will work with u to make sure the stuff is turned in. Not an Easy A, but show up n take notes!
I never thought I would be interested in pre civil war american history. However each and every lecture Carl gives in class is engaging and actually keeps you on the edge of your seat. Im interested in history now, solely because of this teacher.
Quizzes of topics and hard , lectures are interesting, but I coudnt undestand him at all and he is a harsh grader.
Carl is one of the best professor at SCC! If you want to learn about US Hist, take Carl for sure.
I hate history, and this is the best professor I've ever had, hands down. His lectures are more like story time, he makes it clear, easy to understand, and interesting. So helpful, gives individual help if you need it. I can't give this man enough praise.
An AMAZING teacher!!!! Very very very interesting lectures and just amazing teacher overall!! If you come to class, you will do well.
Awesome instructor! If you pay attention in class and you participate you will do just fine in this class. Also it helps out in case you need an extension on an assignment. If you show you are a good student and are trying he will help you and give you more time. His office hours are flexible and he is always around to help out students.
Carl is an excellent teacher. His lectures are engaging, interesting, and easy to follow. He welcomes questions and class participation is mandatory at times during lectures. He will call on you so be ready. Show up, take a lot of notes (I average 3-5 pages per class), do the reading, participate, and do the homework. That's all you need to pass.
Great Teacher, he made learning history fun. I thought this class would be boring but his lectures really keep you interested. There is alot of writing in this class 3 essays(2 short, 1 long), midtem and final are all essay questions no notes allowed, 4 D2L quizzes. It's not easy, so be prepared to study, make sure you go to class and take notes.
Carl is one of the best history professors I've ever had. Extremely helpful, very interesting lectures, midterm/final are easy, essays are simple, quizzes are a bit hard. Attendance is mandatory, some aspects are strict like keeping your own list of key terms. Good sense of humor. Read all textbooks. Overall great guy, will recommend to anyone.
This class was really fun to be in. He is never boring and makes history interesting. His quizzes are hard surprisingly, I felt like half of the information was not even in the book. The time frame for taking the quiz is only 1 min per question.Follow concepts he takes from each lecture, and youll do good.
my favorite professor in school! makes every history lecture worth listening to i have learned so much about history during the time i was in his class..before i used to hate taking history classes
Very good lectures and kept them interesting. Those who are visual learners better record his lectures. 2 essays (short) and 1 long essay. 4 quizzes that are online and are derived from the reading book. Midterms and finals are vocab and essay format. Take good notes and you will get an A. Another great teacher at SCC. Highly recommended
Not the easiest but not terribly difficult. Awesome professor, he had interesting lectures and is willing to help the students. Thanks Carl! Great class.
Very nice and helpful teacher. Lectures are interesting and he really likes students who participate and joke around in class about the topics. Highly recommend.
He is masterful at what he does. His lectures are a work of art. He is one of the most knowledgeable professors that I have taken. I am now a SacState student and when I get good grades in history courses, I thank Prof. Sjovold since he already taught me those information. Even if you do not like history, his lecture style will make you understand.
I would definitely recommend taking him. He is really down to earth and funny. His lectures are very engaging and entertaining; you will definitely learn a lot in his class.
Easy class as long as your do your readings and finish assignments on time. He's extremely helpful and intelligent - graduate of uc berkeley and uc davis. Lectures the whole time in class and engages students into the discussion as well. One of the best professors at sacramento city college!
He is very helpful Professor. He is one of the best Professor at SCC.
THIS CLASS WAS HARD. HE IS A VERY HARD GRADER. I attended every class, listened to all his lectures but for some reason, his grading on the essays was never on point. I couldn't even read his feed backs either because he wrote so sloppy.
HE WAS AN AWESOME GUY AND TEACHER. NOT VERY EASY BUT HELPED YOU IF YOU NEEDED IT. LEARNED ALOT. HE MADE EVERY LECTURE LIKE A STORY, MADE IT INTERESTING AND FUNNY AND RELEVANT. CLASS WAS NOT BORING AND I LOOKED FORWARD TO IT. NEVER MISSED A CLASS. TAKE HIM !
Sjovold is the best history teacher ever, and maybe the best teacher at Sac City. His lectures are engaging and informative. He's passionate about history and his lectures inspire you to be, too. Amazing professor.
Carl is the best History professor ever. He is intelligent, quick-witted, and loves it when students participate. I looked forward to his class everyday--his lectures are amazing. He gave me an in depth understanding of American History, beyond anything a textbook could ever give. He is the best professor I have ever had.
He's one of the best professors i've ever taken. His lectures are like a story and it keeps you paying attention the whole time. He wants you to participate so be ready to be called on without even knowing. He's also good with names so dont think hes picking on you.
Attendance is necessary to get the notes from the lectures. He tells a good narrative of history. Class participation is a must as it's 50 pts. I noted those that missed classes, and didn't read the book struggled along with those that did poorly in ENGWR 101 or 300. This class is easy. The first online quiz is easy, but the others are tough.
Attend every lecture, pay attention, and take notes. He is crystal clear and tells history like interesting stories that everyone can relate to. Leave your iPad and cell phone in the car because your lecture notes are essential for passing tests. Two extra book reading assignments with papers to write. Previous edition of textbook ok.
Hands down, Carl tells the story of history the best I have ever seen. He grabs your attention during lecture, rest assured you will not be bored. Prepare to be called on and asked a lot of questions. Essay prompts really require you to think and analyze, make sure you read those books carefully.
Good Professor, not boring. May seem a little harsh, but he is cool. Recommend take good notes to help with exams. Don't miss class. He likes class participation. No study guide. Not an easy A class. Quizzes were hard. Papers and exams are okay. Every point counts. A few quizzes, two writing assignments, 2 mid-terms and a final.
Would take another class from him in a heartbeat!
Carl has THE most interesting lectures because he puts them in a story time order that is very easy to follow. He also directs the class point by point through an outline. Make sure to take REALLY THOROUGH NOTES and with enough information while he lectures because It will be crucial for the exam.
Carl is amazing and a great history teacher. Take it from me, history is not my greatest subject and he makes it enjoyable. Carl makes his lectures into a story type setting, every lecture is a journey. He is a great guy and will work with you on your essay if you are having trouble. Two big essays, both 6 pgs.
He is a great professor! He makes lectures enjoyable and interesting. Puts a lot of effort into making sure the class understands what is going on. He however does require you to read 2 books and write 2 papers on them. His exams are fairly easy if you pay attention and take notes in class.
Have taken Carl for both Hist 310 and 311. He's old school in that he writes on the board with the outline, then tells the story in chronological order. The midterm and final are based on his lectures. He picks 10 terms and two essay questions. Online quizzes from the book. You can get by on the lectures, then read the book. Good for ESL students.
He said you have to read on your own and he won't give you lectures on the subject. Study guides for tests but he doesn't teach at all in class. He is very confusing as well.
Very good professor. Tough grader. One midterm and one final. two papers and about 5 quizzes on the book. Exams are based on lecture and quizzes on the book. So READ. He's a pretty goof professor, and very willing to help if you ask.
If You have ever fallen asleep during History then Carl is your man to open your eyes to History. Every Lecture is told like a story and is clear and exciting. Make sure you show up to lectures because lectures make up the test terms. He is very helpful and i willing to clarify anything. He really knows his history and so will you!! TAKE CARL!
Probably the best history professor at SCC. Lectures are good and detailed, if you listen the tests are really easy. He also seems to appreciates when students contribute.
His lectures are absolutely STELLAR. He's very systematic. I knew what to expect every session. Agenda of the day's lecture is written on the board at the start of the class. He is very organized and speaks with great enthusiasm. Helpful and eager to answer any questions. GO TO CLASS. The lectures plays a HUGE role in upcoming exams.
Sjovold was interesting and great. If you take him, be prepared to write a lot! Take good notes and pay attention in class. Recording his lectures also helps.
Happy to go to class every time. His love for history always showed and his involvement with each student showed that he wanted us to learn/succeed. Take good notes & read the chapters to stay up to date (quizzes out of book). There were two essays assigned, big part of grade. Midterm & final will be a breeze if you pay attention to key subjects.
LOVED THIS PROFESSOR so much i had to take another history class with him. Very informative and insightful. He grades hard on essays but fair on finals and midterms. Be ready to take copious notes because the terms might be on the exam. Quizzes are online and are probably the biggest pain of the class. Overall, Carl is the best history prof at SCC
Prof. Sjovold is THE best History professor in SCC and maybe even the greatest in America. His passion for History allowed me to gain a new respect for the subject. Carl's lectures are the bomb. They were my favorite part of his class! He is happy to help outside of class and is overall one of the best professors I have ever taken. I recommend him!
Carl is an amazing professor. He gives great lectures with a story-telling vibe, and although there is a good amount of work in his class, he grades fairly and will help you get the grade you deserve. My biggest regret is not taking 311 with him!!! Seriously top-notch guy, don't make the mistake I did and miss out on his other classes!
I failed multiple history classes before finding Sjovold. Passing his class easily. There were only two essays, a few quizzes, and only two tests (midterm/final). Very relaxed and teaches well.
His lectures are great. Time just flies by if you love learning history through stories. His quizzes are tough if you don't read the textbook but *cough*Google*cough*. Two essays but he won't grade you for grammar. Two written exams which are really easy if you pay attention and take notes.
This is my second time taking Prof. Carl. As always, his lectures are AMAZING and his class is very straightforward and exhilarating. The midterm and final are easy if you study the notes from class and the four online quizzes are a breeze if you keep up on your reading. Carl has been like a mentor to me and you won't regret taking him. Recommend!!
After only one class, Carl has become my favorite professor. He has a very serious demeanor while calling roll, then instantly dives into the lecture. Definitely take notes on the lecture, but don't forget to just actually listen and enjoy them. He's funny and his lectures sound like an interesting NPR podcast. Don't miss your chance!
I took this class for my GE, and Carl was the best! His lectures are clear, and tests are easy. You have a list of terms, he chooses 5 and u write about them, and essay themes for test are given before the exam so you can work on them. 2 papers on book, pretty difficult but he is willing to help you, as much as you need it. Highly recommend!
Carl was amazing! He is very straightforward when it comes to what is expected of you and his grading, which is a breath of fresh air after most professors! He makes history interesting, I would recommend him to anyone! (if you're reading this, thanks Carl!)
Carl has amazing lectures! He is very caring and is willing to help if you're struggling. He is a great professor. He is a tough grader and expects essays to be 5-6 pages.. I would recommend him!
I have taken Dr. Sjovold class for two semesters of history and he is by far one of the best professors I have ever had. His lectures are so engaging and interesting. Its almost that taking a walk in the past. Theres always two papers on small books. If you go to his office hours he basically helps you write the whole thing. Fantastic Professor!
Great lectures, very interesting and made class pass by fast, class made up of 4 online quizzes 2 exams explaining a few terms and a essay of a given topic(2Choices) and 2 Papers based on 2 short Books, Easy A
If you're a visual learner, this class wont be as easy. He gives out lectures without a power point.
Professor Sjovold was undoubtedly the best lecturer I had while at Sacramento City College. He brings history to life with his stories. He does require quite a bit of reading as well as participation in class discussions, but his class is a must take especially for history majors.
This class was one of my all-time favorite at SCC. He is great at giving lectures and allowing the class to voice their personal opinions whenever it pertained to the current topic. The exams are on the lectures so going to class is a must.
OMG! Carl is the best! Whenever I listen to his lectures, I feel like i'm listening to my grandfather telling great stories by a fireplace or something. He should have his own podcast. You will have an easier time waking up in the morning knowing that you have something interesting to come to at school if you take his class.
This is by far the best professor I've taken at SCC. Him talking during his lecture brings History to life. He's a great professor and an amazing person. Can't wait to take his HIST 311 class!
The best history class I've ever had! His lectures are amazing and there's not a lot of work. You have a few quizzes that are super easy, a midterm, final, and two essays which are also fairly easy. Took this class during the whole COVID-19 pandemic & his class was just as great online. He's also very willing to help if you reach out to him!
Great class great professor.... take this class
This is my second time taking him. I recommend not taking this class early in the morning because I did and I felt like I was being told a bedtime story because he teaches in story form! The only bad thing about him is that he licks his lips a lot and like pauses in the middle of sentences. He's wordy lol. Also he looks like Mr. Krabs. Good man!
Dr. Sjovold is an inspirational professor and an amazing story teller. He makes exploring history so rewarding. I especially appreciate his support and time when I encountered difficulties on my essays. I hope I will have a chance to take his other classes in the future.
6 writing assignments in total- the first 5 is only 2 pages, the last is 4 pages. 3 total exams, no cumulative final. At least one discussion board each week, and he does have a make-up week for missing assignments. He doesn't have zoom classes but is still available for office hours and will help you. Do your work and you'll be fine.
He was a very tough grader. We were assigned short essays (3-4 pages) every other/ every couple of weeks in which he was taking points off my writing for not enough analysis. Can only fit so much analysis in a 3-4 page paper.
Class consisted of six short essays, weekly discussions, and three exams total. There is quite a bit of reading in this class, but it's manageable. Overall, class was pretty easy in my opinion and as long as you do the reading and turn in your work on time, you'll be solid.
The key to success for his class is to attend his Zoom office hours. I was able to improve my essay score from D to A within few weeks because he gave me good feedback on my rough draft. There is either a discussion board or an essay every week. Also, there are 3 exams in total and you get 25 questions and 30 minutes to work on it.
Honestly, I just did the assigned work and got an A without watching lectures or doing anything extra. Super easy online and reasonable exams. However, there are many short essays throughout the semester and if writing is not a strong point, maybe choose a different professor.
I am so glad I was able to take this class with Professor Sjovold as my instructor. His lectures are clear and easy to follow. He also makes it pretty entertaining so it keeps you interested. I recommend that you stay on top of your readings & reach out to him if you need help. Ultimately, he wants you to succeed.
Easy class. Just do your work by the due date and you will pass. Every other week, there is an essay and discusses but never in the same week. Long RECORDED lectures and reading is a bit long but you don't have to do it to pass the class. The prof is good. You can tell he likes history which made me care more.
Lots of writing but that is expected in a history class. Do make sure to turn in any writing assignments. Do not miss discussion threads as the points do add up and count towards the final grade. No extra-credit but he will allow you to turn-in a missed essay. Read/watch his lectures first, then analyze assigned documents. Approachable/ easy going
This is a easy class if you are good at writing. 1 assignment a week very easy its either a short paper or discussions. I passed without looking at lectures just follow the text book and read it you will pass!
There are essays almost every week, and never got an A.
Lectures were great and he had them all typed out and available all semester. Free textbook with great reviews, lectures are important for essays and tests. In-class discussions were really helpful for the papers. Professor Sjovold is very knowledgeable and understanding.
This class made me a better writer. I took his class online, but his expectations were very clear. There were 7, 3 page papers, discussion posts and 3 tests total. The papers and discussion posts were never in the same week. This class has completely changed my ability to write papers for the better! So grateful!
Took him years ago and think about his lectures to this day. He is an amazing lecturer. I learned so much about American historical events and how they lead to current culture and society. Hands down one of the best instructors I have ever had.
I am an ESL learner, weekly reading is quite heavy for me but he made his lecture notes, if you study the details, you can swing it with the other reading materials. This class has 4 essays(2-3 pgs), and 1 longer essay (5-6 pgs), every other week, you will get a discussion board with a short document (2-3 pgs). He is very willing to work with you.
heavy reading, he has lecture notes each week to guide you on what to focus on (also this will be a good review material for each quiz, a total of 4), 5 essays (4 2-3pg, 1 5-6 pg), every other week you will have a discussion board. Prof. Sjovold is warm and encouraging, willing to assist you with assignments.
as someone who has never been a fan of history i loved this class! he makes his lectures like a story but also packed full of information. if you pay attention in lectures you will have all the information for tests and papers.
lots of reading as others said, but nothing too crazy to manage. i liked how organized his online course was. beyond the reading+lectures, theres either a ~3 pg essay or disc board each wk. frequent essays but not too bad, theyre short & the prompts were pretty easy to respond to. never into history, but i def liked this class more than i thought!
I personally am not the biggest fan of history and wasn't excited for the class at the start but Carl made it better than I expected! He is super understanding and wants all of his students to succeed. He is always available for office hours and puts his lecture outline on the board. Everything is straightforward and there is few assignments.
This professor is rather harsh, his feedback on essays were minimal and he took points off just because. He docked me 17% on an essay because "grammar needs work", while my analysis was strong. Super tough grader, almost unfair. I'm a pretty strong writer as well, but his class was very difficult. First in C college. Thanks Prof.
This professor was rather harsh, provides minimal feedback on essays. He docked me 17% for "grammar structure needs work", while my analysis was strong. I am a pretty strong writer, but he grades very tough, almost unfairly. Class is 95% essays 5% discussions which are also lengthy. This class is my first C in college, thanks Prof.
Go to lecture or you will be lost!! Other than that easy class to take.
Overall this class was alright, one thing I didn't like was that we had write an essay every two weeks. If writing essays or writing in general is not your thing then don't take him.
The class was really organized, but there was a ton of work, especially with all the reading. The quizzes used material from the lectures.
Pretty generous with points when grading. Quite a bit of reading each week but not too extreme. Discussions and essays alternate each week so if you aren
Professor Sjovold is a great guy and is clearly passionate about history and politics. Your grade will be primarily composed of just 4 main assignments, 2 tests, and 2 5-7 page essays. If you feel you are struggling or not going to make pass, go see him during his office hours. He's very much available and happy to help you get the grade you want!
Very good professor, their are lots of essays and exams but as long as you do all reading, listen to all the lectures you will do good.
Took Prof Carl in 2019 Hist 310, best professor no doubt. Midterm and Final were written and I filled out my green book and used the allotted time and wanted to write more on the history I learned but had to condense it. No PowerPoint or tech just classic lecture; makes lecture feel like a movie and paint a clear picture of history and
Prof. Carl's class was well-organized, but required a lot of reading and writing. The grading was tough, but you can do well if you stay on top of the work. Unstuck study was super helpful for studying and prepping for the quizzes.
Amazing. He's so kind, so helpful and will go out of his way to help. He made history fun and always took our feedback and made us laugh. If I could take this class again, I would, he is truly the definition of a teacher.
His teaching style is so boring. All the lectures are him just talking AT the class He also just follows a script that is accessible in the module. No group work or engaging with your classmates. His teaching style made it very unmotivating to even come to class. No slides, no engaging in class assignments, no writing important notes on the board.
Great Guy, Just make sure to listen and read things carefully and enjoy his lectures. He is very chill and down to earth.
His style is for sure old school, but he was so sweet. I wish he had any group projects I couldn't talk to anyone he talked from start to finish so only that sucked but he gave amazing pointers if you pay attention in class and have good notes and study before tests or read the book, you'll easily pass!
Loved Prof. Sjovold's class! He is very old school but i love his engaging teaching style. He is very passionate in the way he speaks and tries to get people to engage. If you engage you tend to understand better. Made the class laugh and always made sure everyone was on the same page.
Great professor. Pay attention, take notes, and put some effort in on essays and you will be all good. He makes all topics easy to understand and what you learn is what is on exams.
He's makes amazing lectures that are super easy and fun to understand! As long as you pay enough attention to his lectures, you'll do well in his class! The exams and finals are also very easy to prepare for, and Carl is very kind and understanding. A super good teacher for those who were new to college! 110% would take again!
AMAZING professor. Forgot to rate after the last semester but I just remembered to do so. I have never had lectures like his before, when he is teaching he really makes it seem like you are there during whatever event he is talking about. Very flexible with extending due dates, and also very helpful of course with essays or any assignments.
Had him for an in-person lecture and he was very thorough and genuinely interested when going over his lessons. Often presented opportunities for students to answer and give their opinions on things. When I asked for an extension on an assignment he agreed and didn't even ask why. Super unproblematic and very passionate.
He was very caring and nice but being in his class was hard his exams and mid finals were short essays, his assignments were only essays, you will have to read a book and use it for a long essay. Lectures are a bit boring I prefer bullet points slides instead of him telling me long story of the lectures with no visual because I'm a visual learner.
Carl Sjovold is subpar in teaching History 311. He simply reads his lectures verbatim rather than summarizing the lectures in a detailed way. From a teaching standpoint, he really needs to improve and put some effort into it. Additionally, he also needs to improve giving thorough feedback rather than saying, " brush up the grammar."
Great professor, I am bad at history and still got an A, answers quickly, ready to help you, very caring and wants to help get you an A. I recommend always.
Great teacher! Very understanding and is a fair grader. You're graded by very few things, just essays and tests. If you pay attention to the lecture you'll do fine, everything on the tests is said in the lecture you just have to pay attention. Very understanding, Funny, awesome, and doesn't give homework.
