He's a pretty cool guy, extremely smart and intelligent. But rather confusing, and he can make you feel dumb sometimes. If you go to him for help though, he is extremely helpful. His teaching methods are also a little bit different.
Many students dropped his class. He is very difficult. Stay away!

Horrible
I HATE YOU WATTS! If you want an A, do not take this class. He speaks to the students like they are dumb. His class is out of only 100 pts, so every mistake is a percentage point. Plus, his voice will put you to sleep in a heartbeat.
good teacher but at times the lectures are boring and could put you to sleep. Learn a lot in the class and he walks you through the papers so if you don't get a good grade on the paper it is your own fault
this guy is a great prof. the people who say he sucks probably skipped all the time and didn't do their work. he will challenge you, but really the class is pretty easy if you pay attention. he's very entertaining and will speak his mind.

Challenging stuff, true - but that's what University is about, dunderheads. You want easy? Go work at Burger King.
Watts is the sexiest professor I have ever had! I love his class, the only reason I wake up every MWF is because I get to see him. I wish he taught every subject so that I could benefit from his sexiness at all times of the week.

This guy is horrible. Kinda pathetic girls would rate him based on his appearance. Take my adivice and take this class with a different professor. He is a joke.
Beware! Find another teacher while you can! This guy thinks he is better than every American because he is from Europe. It felt as though he expects us to know Europe inside and out. You have to know Europe before taking this class or you are doomed!
Great prof, great class. But prepare to be worked to death, as he expects a lot.
This Prof. is a very good teacher. He is very clear and knows what he is talking about. The assignments are easy if you come to class.I think that the people who rated him as a horrible teacher shows more about who they are, than who he is.
Its hard to follow and hard to understand. He is not my choice for a professor. BUT....He is fair. Bit of advice... Slackers don't bother.
Damn sexy! It's hard to keep my eyes off of him, and I think that's why I failed my first paper. Very well dressed. If you don't want a sexy teacher, DON'T TAKE HIS CLASSES.
All course requirements are clearly stated, and there is never any question of what he expects. To sum up the Watts experience... I once asked him what he is supposed to do if a student dies in his class. He responded, "Get rid of the body?&quo
Great teacher. I don't think he hates Americans - his fiance is American. He is very intelligent, and this may intimidate some people, but if you just ask about what you do not understand, and if you keep up with the notes and readings, you'll be fine.
He is very knowledgable. He is intimidating but as long as you are not a moron he will respect you and help you as much as possible. It is a great class because it is not like usual history classes, you actually have to learn stuff!!

What a college level teacher should be. Any negitive ratings are from people who expect an A form no work what so ever. Just come to class and LISTEN. All the notes are given to you and all the goals of the class are clearly stated. Hard but fair.
Sexy guy, looks like Ewan McGregor. As far as teaching methods, different from most American methods, but as long as you go to class and listen, do your work, you shouldn't have too big of a problem in the class. A very intelligent professor.
He is a moron who is not afraid to tell you that you are stupid. Says some funny things and is always willing to help, and even tells you how to write the papers. However, he doesn't grade them fair.
JUST LISTEN, SHOW UP, ASK QUESTIONS, and you will do ok.
Not many left in his class!!
Anyone who says he doesn't grade fairly is an idiot. If he told you anything more about how to write the paper, it would be written for you! An excellent prof, very knowledgable. I don't get the "sexy" thing, but his accent is enough to keep my
He is probably the most clear and helpful teacher i've had. He tells you exactly what to write for your assignments, however the material is pretty tough. Class lectures are interesting and funny. Keep an open mind and don't be intimidated by him.

Easy teacher if you ask questions and read the book. Likes to get the class involved. Smart guy and always willing to help.
he is way to hard for an introductory course. it would be good if i was a history major. i mean i got all excellents but ended up with a B+. he doesn't give out A's.
Very intimidating at first because you don't know what to expect from him. But he is a very honest Professor. Try not to miss class, do the homework, read the book. I thought I was going to do horrible and I ended up with a B.
I definately feel like he was a great professor. His teaching method was very unique but he made the assignments very clear. He always asked if any of the students had any questions and gave full explanations. GREAT PROFESSOR!!!!!
He's so funny! And of course, helpful. I enjoy the class, even though it has nothing to do with my major. Keep up the good work!
A very funny professor but very demanding for a 100 level history course. Is a bit of a prig and can be very intimidaiting. Everything is written so if you are not a great writer, be cautious. Don't fall asleep or he will hit you or throw an object, such as a pen, at you.
Great professor! NOT like any of your high school teachers. If you pay attention in class, come prepared, do your homework, and come to him for help on your assesments you will happily pass this course. Sometimes he will give some free entertainment that will catch you off guard! Good Luck!
Intimidating at first, but not as bad as he seems. Tries to make the class fun. Makes lots of jokes. Do your work, pay attention, & you will be fine. Gets very angry when students stare into space.
DO NOT take this class unless you have a love of history! While it is very possible to get a B, he is very demanding. If you are not willing to work for your grade, i suggest a different professor. On the side, He is a really fun guy, but plays favorites-leaves you with the "he hates me" feeling.
DO NOT take this class if you dont have TONS of time for school work. The class is very demanding and Watts is very cocky, he also contacts your academic advisor if you arent up to his standards, I would not recommend this class or professor
professor watts was not only clear and excited about his subject. although this class was designed with challenging the students in mind, this should be expected at a university level, whether 100 level course or not. he is also empathetic to the individual needs of his students. and hes HOT ;)
Not your typical intro class, but if you like a challenge it's alright. If you're not a strong writer or don't like contributing in class discussions get a different prof. Otherwise, the workload isn't too bad, and he's as helpful as he is demanding. The British accent never hurt either.
Meh. You can tell that he really enjoys the subject he's teaching. However, this class has little opportunity for grades, so you have to do amazing on all... THREE assignments. Very unclear about the group project beforehand. Throws you off sometimes with his sometimes raunchy jokes.
too intense for 100 level gen ed. too structured. group project expectations-not explained . essays didn't teach much except how to regurgitate facts exactly the way the prof wants them. expects average students to be automatic history geniuses. seems to be proving a point, not teaching.
Get out right now if you can! He plays favorites (he'll deny it...) and makes fun of his students. Has a tendency to be rude for no reason. Also, too demanding for a 100 level class. He'll try to sell himself as a good guy before you fill out your evaluation at the end of the semester
Professor Watts knows his material better than any teacher or professor that I have ever read. He is a bit demanding but he lets his students know what he expects. Pay attention to details and use your head and HST 102 will be not that bad.
If you want to take this class I would recomend a different teacher. His teaching technique is to intimidate his students and make it impossible to get a good grade. He kicks students out of his class and yells for no reason. You never know if he is going to be in a good mood or a bad one. Watch out
Fulfills every James Bond fantasy a girl could have. He's a knowledgeable prof too. Full of enthusiasm and intellect about history.
I did good in the class but I was very lucky. If you can't write good I wouldn't take the class. All the assignments are essays. He is very funny and definitly knows what he is talking about! I think he would be better in a higher history class becuz he does a great job relaying information.
This man has lost his mind! Hello we are students not your children. If you have to take this class get a different teacher. He has a 25% drop out rate the first class!! That should tell it all!
He is intimidating and u may feel scared to ask for help but he is very willing to help. You must be a good writer to do well as you have to right papers. Show up for class and you will do fine as he gives you a lot of the info you need for the papers. You dont really need to read the assignments.
He is a good teacher. He is interested in your learning, although it does come at a cost. This class is entirely too hard for a 100 level class. You have to write papers, and he is an extremly hard grader. He seems a bit intimidating, but is nice and helpful if you go see him. Very knowledgeable.
Work is demanding for 100 level course. However, papers are written out for you very clearly and in-depth. He is always there to help, and the last thing he is is intimidating, dont allow the English oppression to scare you.
Despite the tendency to slew bad reviews (with the exception of all the girls who think he's the best thing to happend to Grand Valley's faculty),this professor is very helpful and personable if you give him a chance. While you think he's judging you, you're judging him back. Challenge yourself.
AVOID
A very entertaining teacher, professor Watts kept my attention everyday in class. with him there is never a dull moment. Pay attention in class take good notes and work hard out of class and you will do very well. Don't let the first day of class scare you.
Prof Watts is probably the most well-prepared prof Ive had at GVSU (out of 20+ profs). He is really concerned about his students' comprehension of the subject matter, and is always more than willing to clarify and confusion. However, the difficulty level is too extreme for a 100 level course. Ouch!
AVOID AT ALL COST..learn from my mistakes...
Prof. Watts is intimidating at first, but he is really funny. Assign. are really hard and very sepcific, but he is ALWAYS willing to help his students--even w/ revising and writing papers. Do all reading, talk in class, take notes--hard for a 100, but worth it if you want to learn A LOT.
He is a very good teacher. I hate history but he seemed to teach me a lot about it. I am not going to have an A in the class but I am glad I stuck with it. If you do the work and go to class you wont have a problem with the course. Study hard though the tests and assignments are very hard.
He is a tough prof. He will tell you that the first day. However, the best prof I have had. You will learn a ton. Despite the difficulty it is easy to get a decent grade with little effort, even an A with full effort. I recomend him to anyone. If you are having trouble, he will always help.
Prof Watts definitly knows and cares about his subject wich is nice. It was cool to have a british prof and hear about how things are run in England compared to the US. Take this only if you're willing to spend time on the assignments because they are hard but he is always willing to help.
At first I was not excited about taking his class. He was actually kind of scary but as the semester progressed, he relaxed a lot. I began to understand things better and he was very helpful. If you work hard, a good grade is not that difficult to get.
Prof. Watts knows his history...he can be intimidating in the beginning but he can be funny. It's not as hard as most people say to get a good grade just study and do your papers and you will do fine..He was my favorite teacher this semester.
Know how to use Black Board prior to entering the class!
He taught the class like we were in a British school system (which can be hard for people who grew up in an American school system to adjust to). Don't expect to get an A: when I had taken his class he had never given out a single A before. His grading system is wacky, you probably won't fail but you won't do that good either.
He's a very honest prof that knows his history VERY well. DO NOT take his classes if you're not interested in the subject, because he takes his work very seriously. Great sense of humor, but definitely not a prof you'll do well with if you don't take the s
Carl Watts is a terrific example of a James Bond villain. His brilliance serves as an upper hand over his enemies. I can imagine Bond being captured and tortured by the sinister Watts as the Professor crams useless information about European history into Bond's brain and then, with the threat of failing, forces him to regurgitate meaningless drivel
I DIS-LIKE THIS MAN WITH A PASSION, HE WAS THE WORST TEACHER I EVER HAD. HE IS ONE OF THE RUDEST PEOPLE I HAVE EVER COME ACROSS IN MY LIFE. TREATED EVERYONE LIKE GARBAGE, AND MADE US ALL FEEL STUPID. I WISH HE WOULD HAVE STAYED IN THE U.K. HE IS A VERY MEAN MAN. GET OUT NOW, OR YOUR LIFE WILL BECOME HELL.
Ok, look. Yes, the class is hard. But why is that bad? This isn't high school, people. Profs aren't going to hold your hand and spoon feed you. You are now an adult and YOU are responsible for your education. YOU are responsible for finding the help you need. Watts will help you, but YOU are the one who needs to ask. And no, he doesn't bite.
Do not take.
I don't know what you guys find wrong with Watts. I enjoy his class. Yes it's challenging and yes I spent 6 hours writing a paper for him, but that's college. All you freshman better get your heads outta your butts, this is what college is like. Deal with it.
You people are crazy if you think that he is a nice teacher. yeah, college is hard, it is not supposed to be easy, but this guy makes it impossible. I guess if you kiss his butt you will get a decent grade, but other than that forget about it. Ask anyone they will tell you, even if they haven't had him, DON'T TAKE HIM. Your life will be over :-
Prof. Watts is my favorite professor so far. Its true, that his class can be challenging, but if you study a little you will do fine. This man is extremely knowledgeable and helpful. He's also very funny. I highly reccomend him.
Um, wow, some of you are a bit dramatic, don't you think? Why don't some of you explain WHY you think the class is hard or WHY one's life will be 'over' or become 'hell'? I think that would be infinately more helpfull than whining like a diminutive nursling.
Prof Watts must be coming here himself to write positive things on this site. If you think you want to take this class, DON'T. Watts thinks that a test if still valid if one person in a class passes it and the rest fail. Nothing is his fault, even if the student studies and gets help. Don't even think about taking this class.
Sounds like SOME people are bitter about getting a bad grade... I have never had a problem with Prof. Watts, he has been extremely approachable and helpful in class. He has high expectations for his students, but as long as you do the reading and pay attention in class you will do fine. Good sense of humor too!

These comments crack me up. Lazy? Who do you think writes the reading exercises? Who do you think finds all the resources and makes sure they are relevant for the current topic? Who do you think has to prepare for and teach other classes besides 210? If that's your definition of lazy, what's your definition of busy?
I have to agree with one of the comments below: he will not admit to the possibility that he might be wrong. One person passing a test DOES NOT make that test valid. That line of thinking doesn't hold up to even mild scientific scrutiny. I think, Prof. Watts (I know you're reading this), you need to rethink how you're writing your tests.
This is a seriously challenging class. But he is so willing to talk assignments out with you in his office--he's great about that actually. I'm not going to lie, it was tough, but good grief people don't be so lazy. Watts, keep it up buddy.
I think it's funny that the majority of the people who give him a bad rating are freshmen. You guys need to have a couple of other profs in order to really appreciate how good of a prof he actually is.
Professor Watts is great. Nearly all the readings and lectures are relevant. He's intelligent, clear and helpful if you ask. It's not so much that he's hard, he just demands that not only that you learn the material but develope critical thinking skills and apply them. Which, in my opinion, is the most rewarding way to learn.
Professor Watts was by far my favorite professor this semester. His class is very educational, in several ways. You learn so much more than dates and names, you learn WHY things happened. He is very clear about his expectations, and he can be very funny. Challenging class, but I recommend it. Thank you Prfessor Watts!!!!
He is very smart and teaches well. He is a very tough grader but his grading curve makes it easy to get a B or higher in the class. The main problem I had was his tendency to point out how bad someone did on something to the entire class. That can be be done privately, or in a way that makes the students feel less attacked.
This may sound mean, but I'm glad he is leaving soon.
I'm not glad he's leaving. It's profs. like Watts that make GV great. He doesn't just tell students the answers. He expects them to think for themselves. He challenges students to improve their critical thinking and writing skills. This is lacking in local education. If he leaves, GV will lose a valuable asset.
I am used to difficult professors and this isn't a difficult class, but it seems like Watts doesn't know what he wants sometimes. I asked him about an assignment, wrote what he told me and still barely passed the assignment. I also agree with that the person who said that he needs to rethink the validity of his tests.
He provides with SO many readings and citation styles that research is a breeze. All it takes for the papers is to do a little of your own thinking and prodding and his grade curve will pull you at least a B. Funny guy, even though he can be harsh in his grading comments on his paper. I got a "Dreadful" and still got a B in the class.
He knows his stuff but his expectations are way too high for a 100 level course. I tried as hard as I could and still wasn't doing well. His tests are ridiculous. If I'd met him in any other situation I think I'd like him more.
Intimidating at first. Threw a pencil at a sleeping student which was hilarious. tests=3papers and he tells you exactly what he wants in it. My last paper was 27 pages long and I still missed 3pts. Got a B+ which isfine by me. Final is tricky cuz because it is strictly essay but he grades decent for it.
Watts would be a great professor if he actually cared. Every time I asked him a question he acted like I was wasting his time. He is arrogant and has a great way of making students feel like they're inferior. It really seems like he doesn't want to be here anymore and takes it out on the students.
I was SO scared about taking his course but he really is my favorite professor so far at Grand Valley. It doesn't really matter what I write here because he is leaving anyway. I thought he was a rather good professor and I would take him again if he would still be teaching here :(
I don't think he knows much about what he's teaching. He seems to 'speculate' a lot.
Very arrogant...stay clear...He thinks he's the best professor that has ever lived.
He has a high opinion of himself and I don't think he does care anymore. He hates what he's teaching and he hates being at GVSU. That's why this class isn't any fun. He's a good prof, but this class and this university isn't the place for him. He has the right attitude for Harvard, but they'd never hire him.
Def. hard, but informative. If u just DO WHAT HE SAYS, maybe its not soo bad. Really do the reading. Other than that, if u want a breeze class, try something else. This class gives a lot of clear informaion and several clear-cut assign./tests etc. Nice! His Brummie accent is funny ;)

ihe actually makes you think about what you are learning. i never read the text for this class, but i met with him if i needed to sort through an assignment. no, he's not scary or evil, and he will help you out if you go to his office hours. he's not impossible. i got an A-.
Best prof. at gvsu. He can be pretty tough, but as long as you study for the exams you will do fine. Also had to write 2 papers in his class which were a breeze because he literally tells you exactly what to write in the paper. I am definitly not a history person but Carl Watts made history fun. This university needs more professors like him!!!
So far I'm only in week 2 of his 6 week online course and its TORTURE, aside from accountingmath courses, this is the worst class I've ever taken. The amount of work he expects is ludicrous. Also, if you ask him for clarity on anything, he'll just post the original directions. Terrible class and teacher. Do not take him unless you have no life.
Dr. Watts is incredibly challenging and I would advise students that do not have to cross paths with him to avoid it due to the high level of rigor. For students that MUST take him, he is not as intimidating as he first appears. He recognizes honest effort in his courses and will assist you if you're willing to do the assigned reading.
