Very lenient. Lots of reading assignments. She is new but not a bad professor at all. You will do well if you attend class and do the readings. Overall 8/10.
OMG.. I am slowly starting to HATE this class...waaaaaaay too much reading, does she not realize that this class is an elective for most students??? HELLO? I cant give my full attention to this class, sorry but I have to worry about Acc and Eco and Mkt!!!
class was interesting but WAY TO MUCH READING!!!
She is a very nice professor, but I do agree with others that she odes give alot of reading, when I say alot means alot, but it helps you understand the material well, she is a tough grader but I think before giving you the final grade, keeps all your efforts and hardwork in mind.Take her if you really want to learn about different religions
Great teacher, makes sure you get everything, yet there is a lot of reading but its not hard, and as she says, "read the intro and the concluding paragraph first" :) Tests are not hard, and come on its college people get used to reading! tries to make it fun! Gives extra point for the final :)Take her class!
She's an ok professor. Very good grader. she says if you try and not leave any ansers blank on her test you'll get at least a b on the test. She needs to stop asking whether the class understands something or not. very minute or so she asks "any questions" and waits for about 2 minutes. All she talks about is India...
I loved her class! I learned a lot & she always was willing to better explain herself if someone was lost. There is a lot of reading but most of it is interseting. She's a fair grader & there are only 2 exams- the midterm & final.
She is so great! I really enjoy this class. Listen, it is a lot of work - a lot of reading, writing, and studying. She gives several pop quizzes but they are easy - I got 5/5 on all of them. Just read the book, come to class, and participate. Pretty easy A - if you dont mind a little work but she is not tricky so basically great class!
Alot of reading. Take the class only if you're really interested about south asian religion. if u take it only to fulfill credit requirements then ur gonna get quite bored.
dear god, E-RESERVE NAZI. could be an enjoyable class if she loosens up on the 653 pages reading each class. i don't mind a decent workload, but she seems to forget that we have other classes with a workload of it's own. overall, okay class. fair grader. really intelligent professor.
She's so passionate about religion, and is quite witty. But the amount of reading she assigns is unbelievable, though I shouldn't complain b/c I barely did one. Write insightful papers (skim through the readings for good quotes), know the vocabs for biweekly quizzes, and come to class in order to get a well-deserved A.
Overall I'd say she was a pretty great teacher. She has a good sense of humor and is a pretty proficient professor. Reading is mandatory in the class or you wont really get what's going on. She grades her papers pretty hard but if you do the reading and have decent writing skills you'll probably get an A. Watch your grammar skills though!
she's an amazing professor! but beware cuz there's an incredible amount of reading to do for her class... but she makes it very interesting and the classes can get boring but if you're interested in learning about South Asian religions it wont be so bad.but the reading is ridiculous.you cant possibly do it all.but you can get away with doing half.
Don't take this class if you want to slack off. There's a lot of reading, and class participation is important. If you don't want to hate this class, then read the assigned materials and talk in class. It actually gets interesting
Most work I had in a class. If you don't enjoy and interested in cultural diversity your going to have a tough time concentrating in her class.
She's all into the Southern Religion and Indian people so it's boring if you're not interested in that kind of stuff. She's monotone and expects you to read all of her boring material. She's not very clear on what she expects from you. Her classes weren't detailed enough to take structured notes with.
She is a very difficult teacher. She is very understanding when it comes to lateness and late homeworks, but she gives a lot of reading assignments. If you ever find disagreements with her syllabus I encourage you to keep it to yourself. She is very sensitive and insecure with herself so saying things like "there is too much reading," will be bad.
She is a quirky prf, interesting, sometimes funny, and likes to engage with the class. if u have the chance SPEAK UP, loves & values participation, tends to give a lot of reading but just annotate, not a hard prof. at all, very fair person
I had her during my freshman year and I was one of the best experience I could have gotten. It IS a lot of work but the work she teach deserves it. If you are willing to learn and explore, this is the class for you. I've learn a lot, even outside the scope of the this course. Weekly quizes and 8+pg paper and occasioanl 1.5-3 pg papers on articles.
First off she is a very smart prof. goes out of her way to help her students and she is very understanding when it comes to grading. Its not an easy A, so don't take her class if your not interested in South Asian culture or religion. Quizzes every two weeks, helps your grade overall... drops the lowest grade, 2 papers, mid-term,final and lots of r
To many freaking readings. Holy crap this is a Anthropology intro class not Great works of literature. If you get her expect readings assigned everyday that extend over one hour of reading time. Its a anthropology class lady what are you thinking
Professor Bellamy has a vast knowledge of Hinduism and Indian culture. She assigns a lot to read, so if you dislike in depth reading, don't bother. Nevertheless, the class isn't that difficult. One just has to step up to the plate. She has one fault - she takes too long grading material and the course overall. Great professor though.
She is the worst professor in the world...... too many reading , unfair grader never take this professor. My av. was A in class and finally she gave me a C..she is a gpa KILLER
She's awesome, some people won't agree because they are not interested in real thinking. Her classes spark great conversation and always teach you something cool. BONUS, she knows we're human and isn't attendance crazy. BONUS BONUS, she's really down to earth and open minded. Just try to keep up.
Great teacher. Anyone who complains about her doesn't realize they are in a college class and work is actually required sometimes. Great discussion class, very knowledgeable and passionate about her class. If you don't mind doing some reading and some response sheets then definitely take her
Assigns too many boring readings.... Class is based off of the online readings
She's a really cool and down-to-earth individual. The class discussions are really interesting but the readings are boring. At first, they're not too bad, but then they get longer and less interesting. If you don't mind reading then her class should be an easy B, but you would have to work hard for an A.
Clarity is low at times because she speaks extremely fast like a rapper. For a non-native English speaker like me, it was hard before getting used to her speed. The assigned readings are hard also; it can be boring, vague, or just too deep. But she makes it a point to explain and interpret the readings in the next class as clear as possible.
She's pretty fun as a person but when it comes to teaching, like the other student have stated, she teaches like a rapper. Understanding religion in that way is no way comprehensible. I was really looking forward into learning and understanding the whole philosophy behind religion but the way she teaches just makes you rip your hair out.
I have to admit she does speak very quickly and you miss things but she is more than willing to repeat it because she genuinely wants you to learn. this subject is her life so its normal for her to speak the way she does. Religious Jargon is a must! Pop quizzes aren't that pop but the info is too much for one night so study!
She's an intelligent teacher who speaks a little fast so you have to really focus and keep up! As long as you do the readings and participate, this class is a pretty easy A. My classmate complained that she's hard but seriously a lot of it is just conceptual, and it's interesting! Read, respond, A. Take her if you like thinking. She knows her stuff
There is a lot to read, which is fine i guess. Every reading a followed by a reading response which is collected and always given a check (she only checks that you've done it). These questions are on the misterm and final along with terms and only this, so needless to say it is easy. Only thing is towards the end there is a musuem project.
Good teacher but the material is way too hard to understand. She is extremely smart and tries to help. Expect a lot of reading! If you keep up with the reading, you can easily keep up with the lecture. Got a B+ in the class but I had to put in a lot of work! Do not take this course if you're expecting an easy A. 3 papers and quizzes.
You will come out of this class as a different person. This class makes you realize why Arts should be taught at a business school. I took this class and gained knowledge about A LOT of interesting stuff. Professor Bellamy makes the class interesting. You have to read, respond, and participate (and not just blurt out random stuff). Easy A.
Fair class. She talks pretty fast. She gives periodic quizzes so you won't have midterms or finals. If you take notes and listen to her lectures, you'll do fine. She makes you write in a notebook for every reading so be sure to keep up with that; she will collect them from time to time. No textbook needed. Overall, I would recommend her.
participation matters, quizzes are tough but mainly based on notes. Overall she's a decent professor.
Took this course as a freshman. Decent teacher. She talks really fast. Class is really boring and expect to get a lot of reading for homework. There is one group presentation and several quizzes throughout the semester.
Don't get me wrong, she is a nice professor. However, she gives a lot of reading, and yes there is 5 take-home essays (It's tough). Its Baruch, and suck it up and deal with it, her lectures can be amazing, and she is passionate about the subject. She can be difficult sometimes, but she will help you out, and very caring. Take here for to challenge!
You have a lot of readings to do in this class! There are three papers you must complete. One group presentation. She opens your eyes and perspectives to the religions in South Asia and has a strong passion for what she teaches. I would take her class again and recommend her to anyone else considering a religion's class.
Truly cares about what she teaches and does her absolute best to give you the tools to succeed. She gave us the quiz questions to study before each quiz and even though we had them there was never a guarantee we were studying the correct thing. I would write down exactly what I studied and ended up with a 3/5 for the question befriend someone smart
She's an excellent professor and provides an thorough understanding of South Asian religions. She really cares about her students and their learning in her class. I highly recommend her! She will teach you a lot about the world just sitting in Baruch and I believe she is a true gem to Baruch.
She is extremely intelligent and occasionally hard to keep up with. However, if you do the work and make insightful comments you will do well. 25% of the grade is 5 quizzes which she gives out in advance so you can easily do well if you memorize the answers. The essays and projects are somewhat open-ended so make sure to ask her questions.
5 ESSAYS TO DUE IN ONE WEEK NOTICE AS A FINAL!!! Just because it was a Hinduism class she expected all South Asian students to know the material beforehand. participation matters but if you try to participate she tries to cut you off saying she is running out of time. 3-5 readings due EVERYDAY. MANY SHORT PAPERS and one presentation. Gets annoyed
The class is not easy but that being said, that does not mean it's impossible to get an A. It can be hard to keep up with her because she's very intelligent. Make sure you ask questions because she is likely to use what she teaches in her quizzes. There are 5 quizzes worth each 5% of your final grade, 2 essays, and a presentation.
She is an extremely intelligent and passionate professor that clearly cares about the topic. That being said, for a flex core class, she is possibly too passionate. There are an absurd amount of readings, but you can get away with skimming if you cram hard before the quizzes. Also, the end of semester book is online, don't buy it.
Professor tries way too hard for this course to be a flexible 6th core. Assigns tons of readings every class. Gives quiz questions beforehand, however, each question requires a paragraph of information to be remembered. Has to be word for word as what came out of her mouth or she takes off points. Midterm and Final papers require you to go places.
She knows her stuff. But does a HORRIBLE job conveying to her students what she knows. Picks extremely bland and confusing reading assignments. Expects you to memorize words as if I am taking a language class. All notes are based on lectures and she makes it impossible to follow. I took this class for fun and it is anything but.
Carla Bellamy is very intelligent & well spoken. Like other reviews here I agree that readings are long/not fun but through class discussions, she is very clear on what students should take away from each lecture - as long as you catch what she says (speaks fast). That being said, pay attention & take notes, participate as well. Work for the grade.
Took in 2019 Fall Term as a hybrid course and it was tough. Lots of work and readings that you need to read as the class goes over them and various cultures. The professor is extremely passionate about Anthropology and it carries over into her teaching a lot. If you are interested in ANT, take her. If you aren't, avoid her.
There are many long, boring readings. Get ready for discussion board posts and class participation. Her midterm and reflection essays are only challenging because she grades them in a biased manner. Answer the questions how you think she would answer it herself. (Weird, I know.)
asynchronous class, but she assigns 2-3 long readings every week & makes you do discussion boards based on these readings. Questions on the discussion board are hard & you have to re-read the 10 pg reading like twice to even understand it. Her essays are on weird topics and even if you do everything right she'll only give you a B. NOT worth it!
Professor Bellamy is an intelligent professor; however, she gives difficult long readings every week and expects her students to understand. The discussion board assignments are long and appear twice a week. Essays topics are often difficult to understand and you will most likely get a B or lower. Not an easy class so avoid if you can.
Nice person, very educated, and gives a unique perspective on different parts of the world. LOTS of reading assignments that are all either 10-30 pages each with a whole book that needs to be read at the end of the semester. Essay grades are by luck for most kids as you can either have her grade your paper or her other, very harsh grader.
Nice, super enthusiastic about culture and definitely knows her stuff. The readings she give are sooo longggggg, some are 20 pages. But if you plan time wisely, you'll be able to do it. Usually each week is 1-3 readings and a 1-2 hr film (interesting). Each video and reading you complete comes with a discussion prompt which is not too bad.
dont take. Trust me you will regret, she cant grade or upload assignments on time
Lots of readings every week that are all 10+ pages each. She is mostly nice and social but is kind of a harsh grader. I was lucky enough to get good grades on my papers but she would destroy perfectly fine essays for the smallest things giving them a B- or below for no reason. Cannot grade things back in time. VERY boring and reading heavy.
not too bad of a prof tbh. i thought i would fail this class since it was asynchronous but the readings while they were a lot sometimes, it was so easy to just skim through and write a couple sentences and she would give you a 5/5. there were only 3 essays and i b.s. all of them and got a B so her grader wasn't too harsh. she was not that bad tbh
Professor Bellamy knows her stuff and personally I appreciated the way she expected a lot of us. I felt like she really wanted us to learn. She was also really responsive and answered email fast so even though the class was asynchronous I felt supported. Take her for a new perspective!
Lots of busy work. Readings assigned 2 times each week and are all unrelated to eachother. Essay prompts have no connection to the homeworks but we are somehow required to connect the homework articles to the essay prompt. Although the class isnt the hardest, you wont learn anything.
This was easily the most annoying class Ive ever taken. Im not a bad student all As the semester I took this class, except for this class. Readings ridiculously long and boring. Papers were graded extremely arbitrarily, again did well in English but got crushed in this class. Take another class for the requirement or at the least different prof.
She's a great professor, but too many videos and lots of reading. tough greater too
Interesting class. Understanding Prof.
Never replies to emails.. but then tells you to email her because there's not enough time in class to discuss.
Gives a lot of work for barely any credit. Never has time to listen to students during class. The website was disorganized and always had issues.
She is very understanding and will provide you with extensions. just v ready to reach twice as much. But the readings are entertaining and she puts videos on them so that makes it fun!
she never responds to email. if she feels like it isn't worth time, she won't respond. platform for the class is unclear. not understanding. attendance is mandatory.
everything was on tophat, quizzes were in the same format as homeworks, super interesting class, nice professor but can be a little boring at times, no tests, one final paper, dont miss the deadlines and you'll be fine
an easy class you will get an A if you submit everything on time and just complete the assignments . everything is on tophat and no mid terms just one final paper , if you miss the tophat deadline you can tell her she will extend it for you a very understanding professor, take her if you want to boost your GPA.
does NOT respond to emails, or takes way too long. always off-topic in lectures. way too much homework due at random times which leads to missing them.
Boring and gets off topic but pretty chill. Alot of work on tophat but its easy and neevr repsonds to emails. thats it.
Dear Professor Bellamy, Can you please consider to teach REL3821 again in the Summer/Fall 2024 or Spring 2025!? Thank you very much for your time and consideration!!! ~ Former Student of REL3821
The coursework was on TopHat with easy readings, watching videos, and doing quizzes for each of the readings, but the quizzes were mad easy! Met once a week and went over some lessons. The final was an easy paper. But, some readings had really random deadlines. But she is understanding if you miss one. Though, not the best at answering emails.
I enjoyed the topics she covered, and the class can be easy if you put in the effort. It was frustrating that many in the lecture barely participated as it stalled discussions. While some complain about her slow email responses, I never experienced that issue.
I enjoyed this class. It is about South Asian religions. The class is based on 9 notations that you read and annotate, blue book final, participation, and course printout where you print all the readings, and a timeline quiz. Great professor and amazing lecture. Although the lecture can get boring, Professor Bellamy adds humor, not a tough grader.
Lots of work on TopHat, but manageable and easy. I enjoyed this class because it had some aspects of psychology, so if you're into that I recommend this class. Adds a bit of humor to her lectures. Good experience overall
She is a pretty good professor. She is fair and simple and can sometimes make the class enjoyable to be in or just boring. Pretty decent. Definitely take ANT1001 if you haven't chosen someone already.
only graded on attendance and homework. do NOT forget to do the homework because it adds up. nice professor, but boring class.
This class is easy but theres just way to much hw for one class. Theres no midterm or final. Just a final paper and quizzes are all online. The work can be tedious but its easy. Idk why she gives so much though. Her lectures are not that interesting either unless ur into humanity and culture.
this class is so annoying to take u gotta do a whole lotta assignments and they require u to talk to some randoms or do some random thing u never did before. its annoying to do and half the class probs just BS the assignments. the class work is easy but its just gonna take a lot of ur time to do. the final is a 5pg paper combining all ur work.
no matter how perfect you do in this class ur not getting higher than a B+ unless u have some interesting life. all she talks about is her trip to india and the work is just ode for a common course. this is not gonna help ur gpa at all. forget this bummy class
Too much work in this class. Lectures are extremely boring and attendance is mandatory. Lots and lots of things assigned.. avoid.
So much work for no reason. Required so much more work than my actual important classes.... THIS IS AN ELECTIVE. Always talked about India... Do not take. We only met once a week in class but the amount of work she thought we should be doing is insane.
It's a load of work and she's pretty annoying about stuff. Class is not hard but it's a decent amount of work, not too hard to BS it but only take it if your organized and on top of ur work. Make sure to highlight your name for extra credit from the start she will prob just make you read a slide and it will boost ur grade a letter. DO extra credit
So much work for no reason. Required so much more work than my actual important classes. Always talked about India... Do not take. We only met once a week in class but the amount of work she thought we should be doing is insane.
SO MUCH HOMEWORK, honestly such an easy class as long as you read all the material it's just really boring like VERY!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!
We met once a week and assigns so much homework, its pages of reading on some random things with a quiz for every text you read. we had a QUIZ A WRITTEN ONE every week. Only good thing is you're able to use your notes. so boring all she talks about is India and Hindu. She's very opinionated and makes it known don't like it.
Boring, slow lectures, meaningless class conversation all revolving around her experience in India and topics that are "right" to cover. Heavy on quoting certain authors (feels extremely subjective). Professor also often fails to answer questions, choosing to escape them instead.
save yourself DONT TAKE THIS CLASS
very lecture heavy, also of writing homework and for the final its a minimum of 1000 words about everything you learned and makes you wanna cry. Her lectures are boring even though she tries to be entertaining. Even though this is an elective, she takes it like a core class and has no mercy.
I wouldn't recommend taking this class with this professor. Very lecture heavy and assigns so much work even more than your core classes. The final is a crazy long paper based on everything we learned in class. You can't use any electronics in class and all she talks about is India. There are other electives to take don't take this one.
Bad professor
A lot of work. An elective class but she requires CORE class energy. very boring and goes on and on. bad communicator and DOES NOT answer emails. PLS DO NOT TAKE THIS CLASS.
NGL,shes very nice, however, she gives you a ridiculous amount of reading and quizzes but they're all online, maybe a few in person and she sounds lil crazy when she speaks and overall lecture heavy u will not write anything down bc its so boring and she just yaps. If u have her dont be scared just do the online work u will pass with a great grade
The professor is very knowledgeable in her field and gives good lectures but the amount of work for this class is a lot, the grading for them is pretty alright; just do the work and you'll pass easily with an A. It includes online quizzes, in class/at home discussion prompts, social challenges and a final manifesto paper. Classes can be boring/fun
Like if u the option to not take her, don't!!! She has an unusual amount of work to do. she Lwky doesn't make sense, the professor will say somthing and u will question how this class is even real
Take if you have no other options. There is a lot of weekly reading/quizzes to keep track of, but it is manageable if you are organized. The class itself is boring because she does a lot of lecturing. However sometimes there were interesting class discussions, and she does care about the students.
She gives a lot of work but the assignments are pretty easy, no exams for this class. She talks a lot and most of the times doesn't make sense. Has a weird obsession with India. She talks about a lot of controversial topics so be prepared.
This is a blended course, involving a significant amount of in-class and out-of-class assignments. The grading criteria are quite strict, but you should be fine as long as you're willing to put in the effort. Additionally, she will provide many opportunities to earn extra credit throughout the semester.
