Carla is one of the nicest professors that I have ever had. She is challenging but in a good way. She loves class discussions and she talks about interesting topics. Her class was one of my favorites!

She's a very fun proff, and very beautiful (for those moments when you'd rather appreciate the female form than learn :-P ) She's kind of unclear on grading, but a great teacher otherwise.

not a hard class, but her stories and examples help you remember the material a lot better.

What a great class and a great teacher. She is very open to helping you with assignments, and her tests are more than fair. Discussions are always lively and engaging. One of my favorite teachers this semester, she is kind and more than willing to answer your questions. Take this class!

I took Comm b/w the sexes and Film as Comm. from Carla. She's an amazing teacher and is extremely fun.

Carla is awesome! She has helped me in more aspects than just a class. She always lets you feel like you have contributed something to the class discussion. She is the type of teacher I would like to be if I were one. If you don't like talking in class, don't take hers. But you are missing out!

I love Carla. She is the reason that I became a comm major. She is open to discussion and never cuts you off. She helps with personal problems, grading, course scheduling, and everything in between. If you are new to ODU-take Carla's class-any of them. I'm only sad that I've taken them all and can't see her anymore :(

She rocks so much! This is the second class I've had with her, and I wish there were more I could take. She is always so enthusiastic and always encourages participation. She has to be one of my top 2 favorite professors EVER.

Wonderful teacher...she is always encouraging and she loves what she does. She definitely makes students less self-concious when it comes to public speaking. Highly, highly, recommend!!

Yo! this is probably the best professor ive had here at odu. she is very helpful, she is funny, she is a great speaker, and on top of all that she is sexy. her test are hard as long as you study with you book and notes. I want to learn and have fun at the same time you'll take her class.

Best professor ever. I'm so glad comm. is my major and she teaches more classes. Looking forward to working with her again. She has so much energy and makes you WANT to come to class and WANT to talk in class. Take her, u wont regret it.

Really nice and really easy. I skipped at least half of the classes, didn't turn in a handful of assignments, and still got a C+. To top it all off, she's incredibly cute, too.

I bought the book, i went to class, i studied, i read the book, I did the inclass writing assignments. I got a C. Im an A student. Hmmm. I think she's one of the best teachers if you like visuals. But when it comes to her test they're sooo hard and tricky. You can't really study 100 percent. Esp. since her study guide isn't JUST whats on the tests

she was one of the best teachers i have had at odu. just make sure you go to class to get all the lecture notes and write down everything she says, even examples cause it's going to be on the exams

Carla is by far one of the best teachers in the Communications Department. If you have the chance to take a class she teachers, you will not regret it. I took every class she taught during my undergrad degree. She will make you work for your grades, but her experiences, lectures, examples, and passion for the material is well worth it.

Interesting classes but a hard grader. Tests are not horrible though.

Carla is a great professor. This was my favorite class this semester. She is extrememly interesting, a great speaker, and funny! I totally recommend taking any course she teaches, she's very helpful and if you pay attention to everything she says, you'll do fine. I would suggest going to class.

Professor Harrell is an excellent speaker who keeps you interested in what she has to say. I highly recommend taking her higher level classes. She's not bad too look at either. She is also a great rugby player, which makes her even cooler!

Excellent professor in the communication department!!! You can tell she is passionate about what she teaches. Time flies in her class. I admit she's a harsh grader, but taking her comm classes are definitely worth it. She is willing to help out anyone with questions and replies quickly to emails. Make sure you study for exams.

Took communications as elective, but she was an effective teacher. Mixes up her presentations so its not boring. Recommended.

She is a very nice teacher. Make sure you not only study your notes taken in class but also READ the book otherwise you will not do well on her tests and there are only 2 tests.

Very good professor. She definitely knows what she's talking about. Lectures go by really fast and discussions are always interesting. Make sure you study for her exams (which aren't cumulative) and take the time to write your research paper properly. I don't think it's necessary to buy her required textbooks. Just study off of her powerpoints.

Excellent professor, has a lot of knowledge on the subject and you can tell she is passionate about it. I really enjoyed most of the classes that I attended. Be sure to study and READ THE TEXTBOOK to do well on the tests. Beyond the tests there is only one major paper assigned and a few research based blackboard postings. I would take her again

Communications is my major and she made me remember why I fell in love with the subject. I loved everyday of the class.

Taking a class with Carla is like hanging out. She explains throughly with her own powerpoint notes what each term, theory, or topic means with real life situations & examples. Go to class! Lots of notes, doesn't allow laptops, lots of class discussion. She is their ANYTIME to help you & expects you to read book! 3 tests, a 5page paper & BB posts.

Carla is a wonderful class she makes it very interesting. Her tests can be difficult but if you put even a bit of effort in studying you'll be fine.

The class was fairly easy, the tests were moderately hard. The only thing that made me upset about this class is that she doesn't round your grades up at the end of the semester. I received a 79.98 and it remained a c+ and not a b-. She also didn't email me back when I brought it up. But other than that, it was a nice class.

She is a great professor and I would love to take another class with her. She made me love communications even more! The class isn't hard. If you attend the lectures and take good notes you are set. Also, take some time writing your research paper. I would strongly recommend taking a class with her!

Carla makes this dreaded class lots of fun. She is enthusiastic about the subject matter and that makes the class a more interesting. The book is used for the tests (not everything on the tests is discussed in class but IS in the book) I would highly recommend taking her for this required class.

I loved taking this class! I took this online and always received a response to my emails within 24 hours. She is serious about proper grammar, spelling and, punctuation. Read the assigned chapters for tests. Will definitely take her again!

Attendance isnt mandatory but should attend and take notes. 3 tests, 1 paper and and 3-4 blackboard posts. Test are not hard if you study she gives you a study guide and its best to read the textbook chapters

Professor Harrell is awesome! Her class was so easy and fun. She made the material extremely relatable and encouraged a lot of student response (which is rare in an auditorium class). She made a point to try and learn everyone's names and make the class as personable as possible. If you need Comm 200, take it with her!

Mrs. Harrell did an amazing job leading the first online offer of this course. MUST READ the text for the midterm and final. Papers are easy but take time so just plan and do good work and you'll have no problem getting an A in this class. Its very interesting and you get to apply your own life experiences to the course.

Professor Harrell is a great teacher! Her lectures are interesting and the blog topics are interesting. This is a "W" class so it is writing intensive, there are 2 blogs due weekly or biweekly, and 2 major writing projects. AMAZING TEACHER!

She's tough but I learned a lot. Her syllabus spells out what you have to do. Do the blackboard discussions and use the study guides.

She is a great professor. Go to class because the tests are half from the text and half from the notes that she does not post online. Do the study guide and the tests will be a breeze.

I LOVE HER AND THIS CLASS! Her lectures are interesting, and she likes to interact with the class. Idk if the tests were super easy or I was just in love with it, but I got 98s and 100s on the tests. She is easy to listen and relate to, fairly grades papers, and overall makes my commute worth it. I want to take every class she teaches! Get the book

Very clear about what we would have to do for the class. She was extremely knowledgeable and the material was relatable. As long as you show up to class and complete the study guide, there is nothing on the test that'll be new. Great teacher.

She was good, but a tough grader when it came to the paper. Should have been an easy A class but got a B because of how tough she was with the paper, and I've never gotten below an A on any paper

Professor Harrell is an amazing professor who absolutely loves what she does. Although attendance isn't required I recommend going, tests are 50% from the book and 50% from lecture. She keeps the lectures lively and interactive. It was a very nice introduction into the communications field. Take her, follow the instructions, get an A, have a ball.

Prof. Harrell is a great professor! Even though attendance isn't 'mandatory', if you don't attend class you will not have her notes because she does not post them on BB. If you study her study guides that she posts, there is no way not to get an A. Overall, pretty easy class and I learned a lot!

2 blogs a week, 2 exams, and 2 papers throughout the semester. I thought it was easy for an intensive writing course. One paper is a 1000 words and the other is 5-7 pages. The exams are a little tough, maybe I should've read the material. Only used the book for the exam. Good teacher.

She's provides excellent examples on her lectures and interacts with the class. She has homework on discussion board that is worth a grade! Most of the study guides she gives out is applied material on test so its definitely NOT the direct definitions. She does NOT take LATE homework. If you show you up, you understand all of the material.

I honestly wish that I had found Professor Harrell sooner! The tests are fair game if you pay attention and study! Shes so knowledgeable and caring, I requested her as my advisor! Her lectures are relatable and she gives realistic examples that help you remember the material for the test! Signing up for another one of her classes now! Take her!

Only one paper, 3 tests and final is not cumulative, Professor Harrell is very good at what she does! Very helpful outside of class, and considerate; she knew nearly everyones name in the lecture!

This was by far my favorite professor at ODU. She loves her job and I know this by the enthusiasm she show when teaching. She makes it easy for you to remember lessons because she makes everything into a conversation and includes personal details. These details will help a lot on the test so Id advise you dont miss class

I took Mrs. Harrell back in 2019 for Intro to human comm and honestly this was one of the best classes I have ever taken. The information is very eye-opening and I was engaged in each lecture because of how passionate she was about the topics definitely recommend.

Gave great conversation-style lectures. Gives notes in class so dont skip. The tests combine that notes and textbook info, which is a hefty amount of definitions. Strict on deadlines, but it is college so that's to be expected. She is very nice and approachable. Had about 5 short discussion boards and 1 paper for the entire semester.

She's good, but not great. The lectures are very engaging but they don't really help you on the tests which are mostly from the textbook and are a major portion of your grade. She isn't really helpful with the final paper and is a very strict grader. Nice person, ok teacher. I would take her again but definitely had to figure things out on my own.

Professor Harrell was both my advisor and professor and she is truly wonderful person! You can tell that she cares about her students and is passionate about what she teaches. Her courses are honestly quite easy and relaxed, but you genuinely learn in the process!

Professor Harrell is a great professor. Her lectures are very informative; however, she doesn't post the PowerPoints on Canvas, so you must attend class to get the notes, which you can use on the tests. Also, the tests are based on the textbook material, so I recommend reading the chapters. The DBs are easy but prepare for the final paper.

I love her. She was easy to listen to and cares about the subject matter. Although she was my professor, she advised me for my COMM minor via email so no advising appointment needed. The only downsides are the extra lecture content didn't help on tests and her power points aren't available online.

Prof. Harrell's classes have a very welcoming environment and it is comfortable to speak out and participate in class. The assignments are not very time-consuming but can be interactive through discussion boards that are interesting.

Professor Harrell was amazing in my Capstone class. She truly cared about our success and always gave detailed, thoughtful feedback that helped me improve. The class was a lot of work, but I felt supported the entire time. If you're willing to put in the effort, you'll grow so much and walk away really proud of your work.
