boring, boring, boring-she makes even interesting subjects painful
Although class can get boring, she is a VERY nice lady who will always help you.
Course and Prof great, but some students seemed clueless in class.comment
A little boring at times but she knew her stuff, loved her.
This is the greatest professor in Franklin and Marshall history! She is very clear, super spontaneous, i.e. (forgets to follow the sllyabus) and is the greatest. She does give a good amount of work, but learning from her is totatlly worth it. I take AMS270 with her and it is also a great class. I LOVE CARLA WILLARD

A one-of-a-kind personality among f&m faculty. Beautifully articulate and intelligent. Will provide for a stimulating class, so long as students express sincere interest in material and do what is assigned. She is easily accessible by cell phone outside of class- will bend over backwards to help students.
Professor Willard is the professor we have all been waiting for! She is genuinely invested in her students and their college experiences. Academically, she pushes her students to think outside the box and question societal norms. Socially and emotionally, she pushes her students to realize the importance of balancing"me" time, fun, and rest.
Professor Willard genuinely cares about her students. As with any course, what you get out of it is what you put into it. Professor Willard is approachable and encourages class participation and discussion. I would recommend her course for any student looking to learn more about American/Africana studies.
Professor Willard is one of the best professors I have had here. She is very passionate about what she teaches. She taught me how to analyze film as text in a way that was clear and interesting. I recommend taking at least one class with her as she has her students' best interest at heart and you will leave her classroom a better person for it.
Carla is a professor that works hard to make sure all her kids are engaged, her classes are interesting and not too difficult. All around I highly recommend taking everything she teaches
Professor Willard is one of F&Ms finest. Professor Willard is very knowledgeable, so shell give you all the context that you need youll learn A LOT in her class. Discussions are great and she leaves a lot of room for students to be creative with their analyses. She truly cares about her students -- so dont she shy to reach out for help.
My favorite professor at F&M. She is passionate about her subject matter and engages students in ways that inspire similar passion.
The most influential & approachable professor Ive met! She was concerned about how I did in the classroom and how I was emotionally as F&M threw diff. challenges at me. She's passionate about what she teaches. She helped my writing go to a new level. My passion for AFS was definitely cultivated in her course. Even after graduating, she reaches out
As a First Generation, Professor Willard is one of the best professors that I have ever had. From start to finish she has mad a dramatic impact on my life. She is more then a professor, not just teaching you the course objective but life. I recommend taking classes with her. If you want a great all around experience her class is the place to be.
Professor Willard expands your intellectual understanding by pushing you to think beyond the obvious. Her lectures reflect universal truths. Her goal as a Professor is to create flexible, empathetic, and open-minded students who as a result, are active participants in the world. She is fair and always willing to help students.
Easily one of the best professors I've had at F&M. She cared about each one of her students, and it showed. Expect biweekly journaling, and though it can be tedious, it's worth it. She's very approachable, and not much work is required in the class, but expect very thought-provoking conversations.
Carla is a caring and loving professor who brings out the best in her students. I became an Africana Studies major as a result of taking two courses with her. She teaches you beyond the classroom. The workload is a little heavy but it is all part of the learning process. I urge anyone to take a class with her as it will expand your intellect.
Prof. Willard is one of the most genuine and caring educators I have come across. She conducts classes in such a way that students are forced to think "outside the box." She always makes time for her students outside the class room and will take a true interest in your personal and academic choices.
I took every possible class that Professor Carla Willard taught. I was fortunate to read some of the most thought provoking texts and then being probed in a way that was challenging and inspiring. I developed as a student, a woman, and a thinker under her tutilage. Although we are very close even still, I so wish I could be in her classroom again.
Carla Willard was by far one of the greatest Professors during my F&M career. The level of attentiveness and caring that she displays for her students is unmatched. The hw level is expected for a school like F&M, & all of the readings and work are relevant to the goals of the course. You won't experience F&M properly without taking a class w/ her
Cara has been by far one of my favorite professors during my time at F&M. She genuinely cares about all of her students and has an open door policy where you can walk in for anything. She is enthusiastic and challenges the way you think in and outside of the classroom. If you have not taken her Black American Film course DO IT!!!
Mrs. Carla Willard is the best professor I came across my freshman year. I ended up taking one of her classes both semesters. She develops personal relationships with ALL of her students despite how they look or act. If you're shy, she'll make you feel comfortable enough to come out of your shell. Every one of her classes is a family. She's bae.
She is my favorite teacher. We have grown to have a very close relationship. There is alot of readings, so be smart to spread them out. Go to her office hours, she loves that!!
She's absolutely wonderful. She makes you think and question your own thoughts and views. Discussions are a part of her classes. Be prepared to engage. There will be some reading, but if you do the reading, ask questions, engage in the discussions, possibly go to office hours and go to classes, you should be just fine.
If there is one thing I can say it is that you should try take Carla Willard at least once during your tie at F&M! It's funny because a lot of upperclassmen said to take her because she's an easy grader. THAT WAS A LIE! She definitely makes you work for your grade! All of the class material was awesome and who doesn't like to watch movies?
Professor Willard is AMAZING. I wish I had the opportunity to take another class with her. There is a long term assignment, but as long as you keep up with it, you'll be fine! A must take while at F&M!
I've had Professor Willard since my first year at F&M. I'm so glad I came across her. She is so valuable and inspirational. She is such a great teacher! I would 10/10 recommend Professor Willard, as she is a fair grader and great educator. Moreover, she takes a genuine interest in her students and she's always available for them.
There are but a hand selected Professors that will impact your outlook in life, Professor Willard is definitely one! Her readings made me rethink my position in society and how others perceived not only my physical appearance but also my actions. She is caring and will treat you like one of her own, if you are respectful and do all your work!!
She makes sure to help you as much as she can and she cares a ton about your success. She makes personal relationships with students and keeps everyone engaged. There are a TON of readings and she is initially a tough grader but as long as you use your resources (like the writing center), you'll be fine. She also always brings her dog to class! :)
Professor Carla Willard is an amazing human being. She makes a tremendous effort to make connections with her students in and out of the classroom. Her classes have all been thought provoking. Professor Willard is truly a professor you can't pass on. Regardless of your major or interests, you should take any class you can with her.
Professor Willard is truly one of the best Professors that I have had during college. She is always avialable outside of class for help and is very understanding. She is also very passionate about issues that affect minorities and is a great support/ person to reach out to in times of needs. Take as many classes as you can with her!
You must take Professor Willards class! If you do the work and follow the guidelines she provides, you will do well in her class. Get ready to read and discuss! A lot of the learning is done through whole class discussion and analysis of the texts for AMS 150. Any class with Professor Willard definitely make you a stronger writer.
Black American Film was such an amazing course. Its great for people who are new to film studies and for people who are interested in broadening their film studies in terms of race (and a bit of gender). Prof Willard is very inspiring and genuinely believes in mutual growth, learning, and respect.
She is an amazing prof, cares so much about supporting her students and making sure everyone leaves her class with a new perspective. Do not miss taking a class with her!
Prof. Willard is an incredibly passionate professor who helped to both enhance my learning and improve my writing. She has clear expectations, is extremely personable, and is always willing to help as long as you ask. I would recommend taking as many courses offered by her as possible.
She will work with you to see you succeed. All she wants is her students to meet her halfway for her to elevate you.
It was definitely a pleasure to take Professor Willard's class. Very caring and supportive. She wants to make sure that you do well in her course and helps you achieve that through her feedback. Must take a class with Professor Willard!
From having her my first semester and throughout my time at F&M, Professor Willard has really been 1 of the most engaging, and encouraging professors I have encountered at F&M. Her instruction style is very student focused and she's always available for questions, support and advice in navigating F&M as a student of color. Amazing professor!
If you take this class as seriously as it should be taken, Professor Willard will not just be a professor to you. She sees the greatness in all of her students even when they dont see it themselves. She is supportive and understanding and genuinely cares for her students. Professor Willard is truly one of a kind and its an honor to know her.
If college is about learning about yourself and the world around you, then Professor Willard is an amazing Professor to start that journey with. She understands that first year students are open to new possibilities and ideas, and asks them to make the effort to explore the World through new perspectives. Her class is worth any assignment or test
Professor Willard is the exact type of professor you go to f&m for. She teaches engaging classes about interesting topics and always makes an effort to get to know and support her students. One of the best professors Ive had!
Professor Willard constantly challenges students to push outside their comfort zone and improve their writing and critical thinking. She is passionate about what she teaches and makes it a priority to engage with every student in her class . Professor Willard has not only been a professor to me but also a mentor and advisor throughout my 4 years.
Prof. Willard is a gem. She truly cares about her students and wants them to do their best. She values student input is receptive to feedback. A HARSH grader on essays. She will read every single word that you write and provide lots of HELPFUL feedback. As a result of her teaching style, I can say I have become a better writer and thinker.
Professor Willard is one of the best professors I had at F&M. She is not only teaches in a way that is thought provoking and understandable but encourages her students through constructive feedback and an overall genuine care for students both inside and outside of the classroom. I can truly say she's been a mentor for me since my first days at F&M
I couldnt have made it through college without Prof. Willard. She encouraged me to speak up in class and made me feel as if my thoughts were valuable. As a first generation college student and introvert, I really appreciated this. I took 3 of her courses and they were all very engaging. She genuinely cares and will go the extra mile to help.
Prof Willard is a thoughtful scholar and inspiring mentor. She empowers students to critically examine historical and ongoing issues of race, inequality, and injustice. As a woman of color and an immigrant, her courses allowed me to cultivate a deeper understanding of my own intersecting identities. I recommend her classes 100%. Took AMS150,213,467
Professor Willard is one of the most caring and intellectual professors at F&M. Students enjoy her lectures that are filled with enjoyable and crucial information. Her support throughout my years at F&M led to my interest in American Studies as well as my passion for social change and activism. Take her class, you won't regret it! Such a snoodle :)
I took both AMS 270 and AFS 150 with Professor Willard and had a very unique and inspiring experience. She was the only professor I ever had that wouldn't leave us hanging with a tricky question. If she noticed we were struggling she would rework her question, her flexibility alone proves her dedication to her students! Cannot recommend enough!
Although Professor Willard does demand work of her students, she makes the guidelines for what is to be expected in a very clear manner. Moreover, Professor Willard makes herself readily available to students for help or just to chat. Before graduating, you must take at least one of her classes in order to get the most out of your time at F&M.
I took this class for a film credit. Carla made this class so special and so unique. I saw African-American Film from a raw and real lense. Carla is approachable and loves to keep up with you in and out of class. Awesome professor. Wish I would've taken more classes with her.
Professor Willard was one of the best professors I was able to have in the four years at F&M. Her approach with students and the class reminds me of family. She expects you to put forth effort, but if you need help or have questions, there isnt a better professor at the school that you can access more easily. The course was fantastic.
Carla Willard is insightful, and she truly cares about educating Young, Impressionable, LEADERS! Shes great at helping students recognize their own potential, through learning, and quite frankly, F&M SHOULD BE PAYING HER MORE MONEY! Being her student has been one of my greatest experiences at F&M and it is truly an honor, to even have known her.
Professor Williard is a gem. She is passionate about her work in American Studies, Film, and the advancement of Black Lives. Professor Willard is a critical thinker and enables her students to take a critical lens on the media that we chose to take in.
It's been years since I've taken this course and I still bring it up in conversation at least once a month. I was not a great student at F&M (lol) but this class was the exceptionevery lesson was engaging, every film was exciting, and I genuinely felt like I became a better person because of the discussions we had in class. Prof. Willard is a gem.
Professor Willard 's passion and dedication to her work and her students are unparalleled. These qualities, combined with her insight, expansive knowledge and inspirational teaching style make her courses irresistible. She skillfully engages us in examining how race, as a social construct, has historically been used to maintain power structures.
Professor Willard has designed a class that not only educates students on hidden history, but also pushes them to be a better student after they leave her class.
Best Professor here. Truly love her
My favorite professor in the world
This is my 2nd class w/ Prof. Willard and it was amazing! She makes you learn like no other. She selects the most thought-provoking materials. But, don't be scared b/c she only wants for her students to succeed. If something is happening in you life, TALK to her. She is accommodating/welcoming. She's a great teacher and mentor.
Professor Willard really cares about her students. When you are her student once, you become her student for life. Keys to success: leverage this relationship, attendance office hours, and participate in class.
Professor Willard does not assign difficult work, simply one or two discussions surrounding that week's film. She is more than willing to support students in any way that they need, whether that be academically or personally. She clearly cares about her students and the way that they receive the material. I enjoyed the class more than expected.
Prof. Willard is an amazing teacher, and she is just an amazing person to talk to. She always brought really fascinating perspectives to class, and I always looked forward to the films that we watched. She leaves amazing feedback on essays, but can be a little bit tough if you don't follow her guidelines. I highly recommend taking a class w/ her.
I highly recommend Professor Willard. I also highly recommend her Black American Film class. I was introduced to incredible films. There are two papers total (midterm and final) and about two discussion posts weekly. She cares deeply about her students and their success. I plan to take another one of her classes. Grateful for her!
Professor Willard is very caring and understanding of anything you may have going on. The class covers some very interesting perspectives if you actually care about African American history. If you plan to keep up with the class and engage in activities, you will be fine!
Took several of her classes @F&M. 1. Improved my writing 10x. 2. Knows ins and out of the institution, so ask how to navigate the system. 3. Encourages student participation w/o being overbearing. 4. Knows her domain very well, yet welcomes fresh perspectives from students. 5. LIFG students - take her courses and get to know her!
I would 1000% recommend taking a class with Willard if you have the opportunity to. I took two classes with her, both were really enjoyable and l've improved so much on my writing. Professor Williard is very kind and understanding of her students. She genuinely wants everyone to succeed in her class and outside of the classroom! Exceptional prof!
She is the best professor I have ever had, so incredibly intelligent, knows very deeply what she is talking about.
Professor Willard is amazing and you learn a lot from her lectures and classes. A lot of reading and critical analysis.
Professor Willard is a great instructor: organized, patient, and able to explain complex topics clearly. As a freshman, this class was an excellent introduction to essay writing and analyzing text. It is because of this class that I am taking more African studies classes and adding it as a minor. I can't wait to take another class from her."
Great professor and great class.
Professor Willard is wonderful! She really cares about your improvement as a student/individual. Her lectures are great. She has lots of interesting stories to tell. Assignments are never daunting and she is extremely accessible if you need help. I like how she encourages usage of the Writing Center! :)
One of the most genuine, sweet professors I have ever had. She teaches a very fun, inspiring class that gives you so much knowledge about African American history. However, do not get careless about the midterm. I dropped 8% after getting a B on it; you have to give your full effort. The midterm and final are essay-based; both are fairly easy.
Prof. Willard is very kind, and she has a dog! Her material was interesting. However, she would assign very long reading to do outside of class (as in 250 pages of narratives) and expect a response in the discussion post of the reading by the next class. She would only accept paragraph-like responses with citations in the discussion posts
Great professor! Class is always interesting and the films are fascinating. There's a lot of writing but Professor Willard is always there to help. I recommend 💯!
Professor Willard creates such a supportive environment where every student feels encouraged to grow, especially in their writing. She meets you where you are and helps you improve with constructive feedback and genuine encouragement. Her passion for teaching really shows, and she's always willing to help outside of class if you need guidance.
Carla Willard is an excellent professor who genuinely cares about every one of her students. She is always available for questions outside class time and wants every student to succeed. She also showcases her passion for the class topics, which helped facilitate my learning. I would 100% recommend taking a course with her.
Prof Willard was amazing!! She made me interested in a course I didn't expect to enjoy as much as I did. Her feedback was helpful and positive and you could tell she cares a lot about what she teaches.
Hands down one of the best courses and professors at F&M. Professor Willard really cares about what she teaches and each student as an individual person. This course was mainly a midterm and a final that were both short papers, but as long as you went to class they were very doable. I would 100% recommend taking this class with Professor Willard.
Professor Willard is a caring and dedicated professor. She makes herself readily available through email, text, and phone. Her lectures are very insightful, and the assigned readings are never too overwhelming but force you to think critically. The midterm is an in-class essay, but she prepares you well, while the final is a take-home essay.
I debated sharing this, but want to be honest. I struggled with deadlines and own up to that, but felt I was treated more harshly than others. Toward the end, I no longer felt safe reaching out for help. While Prof. Willard is clearly passionate and knowledgeable, my experience in AMS213 became one of the reasons I've reconsidered staying at F&M.
Awesome course! I did not expect to like this course as much as I did. The workload is steady but nothing is too hard if you keep up. Prof Willard is passionate about what she teaches. She is one of the most caring profs here. If you have a problem just ask. She goes out of her way to help. Recommend 100%.
I had the pleasure of taking multiple courses with Professor Willard. The way she presents information is very clear and engaging. She gave me the confidence to participate in class and challenged me to reach my full potential. The workload is manageable. She is someone who cares about her students and goes above and beyond to help them succeed.
She stood out for her integration of cutting-edge ideas with real-world application. Courses were rigorous, always deeply engaging, thinking critically about contemporary issues through the lens of literature, theory, and lived experience. She connected abstract concepts to tangible realities, making complex material accessible and relevant.
Professor Willard is excellent at creating spaces for students to engage in challenging discussions that are both respectful and educational. Her classes are great for all types of students because they hold room for all types of learning and growth.
Professor Willard is truly an excellent professor who goes above and beyond to make sure her students succeed. Her classes are challenging with the required readings and assignments, but she pushes you to think beyond what's on the page and apply concepts critically. She encourages active participation in class discussions connecting real life.
Professor Willard is not only very passionate about what she teaches but her students as well. She's great at explaining key concepts and connecting the dots to ensure understanding. Her classes are more than just a place to learn; she creates a safe space that is welcoming to all.
Carla Willard is a phenomenal human being and an exceptional educator! AMS150 changed the trajectory of my college career and has shaped how I understand and celebrate my identity as a woman of color and proud immigrant. Professor Willard cares about her students and wants to see them prosper in the classroom and beyond! The best ever!
Professor Willard taught an amazing Black American Film class. The material was interesting and she made sure that our assignments were engaging and had us interacting with the material. She gave opportunities for improvement and extra credit for exams and assignments as well. I had never taken a film class before and am so glad this was my first!
Don't take.
Professor Willard instills confidence in her students and takes a true interest in their development. Her course is engaging while still holding students accountable for the material. If you choose to be invested and attentive you will be rewarded. I wish I'd taken more classes with her in my time at F&M. Very few Professors match her style.
