If you work VERY hard you will not just pass but actually learn something! A good number of complaints due to the fact that Prof. Alva won't spoon-feed you but actually expects students to think and show some discipline.
Man this guy was hard! As a business major, I was required to take a science course and took Alva’s class in the summer to get it out of the way. Man, did I suffer. Three hard exams based on the most boring lectures in the world (half the class was sleeping). He was even strict on lab grades t
He is not hard, but he is unfair and bias. He wrongfully took off 5 points off an exam, and would not give me the points due to his error. To me, flashing a book on a screen is not teaching. He acknowledged that cheating was occuring in class, and did nothing. There were a lot people cheting
Very BAD professor
Even by mistake, don't ever take his class. He gives exams which are really tough..
alva is the worst professor to ever take please if you see this definitely reconsider
If you have him change class, he knows his stuff but does not teach it well, does not know how to help or explain things or concepts to you. For this proffessor you need to do your own work, read the whole chapters your self. He is not good at his job at all. You see him teaching go the other way!!!
He is the worst most uncaring teacher I ever had- half the class withdrew and then 1/3 of the remainder failed. I got a D! and I got A's in all my other Chemistry classes! I had to transfer to another school to pass the freaking class. I srongly recommend NOT taking this class woth Alva- he is AWFUL!!!!
he is by far the worst professor ever. he never answers any questions that u need help with. and he tells me what im not doing in lab while i AM doing it, so i had to tell him off several times. his exams are very difficult and he tells us he went over it while he never taught it to us. He seriously CANNOT teach. no joke. he might know his stuff, b
cannot believe he was allowed to teach such a difficult class and not be able to teach it. it is so unfair to students who want to learn.

I am currently taking his class. You must study on your own. He does not teach very well. There are four exams and a final, there all mutiple choice. He does not go into detail.
He's not a professor to go into detail. So you will have to do some work on your own. There are 4 tests and a final which are 26 questions and he drops the lowest test score. He also grades on a curve which can add a few points to your grade.
I strongly advise you not to take this professor. He just reads a summarized version of the chapter and he never wants to answer any questions never goes over formulas he does grade on a curb but he has to cause he doesn't teach. I passed the class but i didn't learn anything...
He is the worse of the worst! He sucks! I can't stand him! He is mean. He is not in favor of the students. He seems to get a kick out of failing students. DO NOT TAKE HIM! you will regret it. somebody told me not to take him, but I didn't listen. He even laughed at the class for taking him during the summer.
He gives very brief overviews/definitions in lecture, and does NOT demonstrate key concepts on his own. He only demonstrates how to do a problem if you ask him about it. Even then, he is not very clear in his explanations. Be prepared to teach yourself the material from the book. I highly recommend getting the study guide to help you do so.
I did pass the class with a good grade but still say he is the worse professor in the world. He seems to be concerned but he is not. he does not grade the test fully always missing points. He doesnt go over nothing. you will be teaching yourself. DO NOT TAKE HIM! luckily i didn't work or else i would have been in trouble. He is the pits!
USELESS
Just like everyone before me stated "WORST PROFESSOR IN HISTORY". How or why he is a professor baffles me. He has no social skills, he hates students, and he obviously hates teaching. I hope BMCC reads these comments and give him no student contact. I avg a 95 on his exams got a 85 on the final and he gave me a B because I missed a lab !!!
I LOVE THIS PROFESSOR!!! I got an A in his class. He states that the book must be read before attending class but there are people who still want information spoon-fed to them. If there is a question on his grading he will change it, very helpful. This class prepared me for the MCAT. THANK DR. ALVA, a true professor. He is a rarity.
I got an A in his class by my own determination. Read the text....I truly take credit for teaching myself chemistry because he is not helpful at all.
He gave us the first test back yesterday, 70% failed, and the class average is 53%. He is a murder in taking out points with no mercy. I had to withdraw from his class. My GPA is 4.0 , but I was afraid of getting a C or D in his class. Honestly, do not even think about him
you dont want this!!
Organic Chemistry is not an easy subject unless, of course, you're a "natural." Dr. Alva makes you work for your grade (as he should) and I studied my butt off to do well. I am glad I took him. Most of the learning is from the text and one-on-one questions.
Dr. Alva, knows a great deal about Organic Chemistry but favors the students who tend to understand more and answer more questions. Dr. Alva does not make an effort to help students who do not fully understand, does not reply to emails, and shows now interest in having office hours or staying after class.
DO NOT take this prof. He speaks Spanglish and is difficult to understand. I had to withdraw from his class. He is very vague and teaches you like you should already know the work. There is a different lab prof. who gives you a quiz on experiments you haven't done yet - which is part of your overall grade. DO NOT TAKE THIS CLASS!!!!!!!!
It was a tough journey yet Dr. Alva pushed me to do better than I was. Now I am confident in organic chemistry as I prepare to take the MCAT. Don't slack off in orgo! You need to devote a lot of time to this subject to do well.
The book is your best friend in this class since he doesnt explain much-3 exams(lowest dropped),lab grade,****final(it wasnt for my class even tho he said it would be).Not always clear on what he wants-likes to lecture on how hard life is.Be careful not to wear open toed shoes in lab, he'll throw you out. There's a slight curve in the end.
When we ask questions, he gives us the answers but won't help us solve the problems. He says students think he is a difficult teacher, but in reality his inability to help us understand key concepts make him a BAD teacher (not a difficult one). He is clearly an intelligent person who is more interested in laughing at students than helping them.
Register for this class only if you're prepared to teach yourself the course from start to finish. Alva's class notes consist only of figures that he's copied and pasted right out of the textbook. He doesn't explain ANYTHING and rants on and on about how students complain about their grades yet he can't see that his lack of teaching is a direct ca
People may complain, but Alva is doing you a favor. Try taking this course at a four year school and see the difference. He does a great job of giving a brief overview of the absolute basics. The principles of Orgo are extensive and require a LOT of study. Alva is really really easy in REALITY. I aced Orgo II at hunter through SELF STUDY.
This professor drops the lowest test. His tests are multiple choice and he curves the tests. What more do you want. You must OPEN THE BOOK.The class is not enough. In my class 50% got A's or B's (not bad)
I have taken other chemistry courses and always had trouble. This class is NOT easy, however Professor Alva makes it as simple as possible. He makes the difficult concepts easy to understand. He drops the lowest test grade, curves, and takes questions right from the text examples. You must put the word in, but he is more than fair and tries to help
Most people finds it hard to stick to the class by the end that does not mean the professor is bad. As the professor said it is whether you get it or not. He put all the necessary and important concepts on the slides which is much more clearer. As long as you do all the problems he asked you will ace the exams and I did it!
Do Not take this professor if you have another option. Unless you have the ability to teach yourself organic chemistry. What he does is use powerpoint slides that he goes through and reads. that is his teaching style. you must do questions in the book. he uses the hardest questions on the exam. he doesn't do much "teaching" or explaining...
Very Strict, reads off powerpoints, not a good instructor. Not helpful at all during labs. He does curve. Makes mistakes on scantrons. Be ready to teach yourself the material. Avoid if possible
He is a great professor! He was really efficient, went through the slides and answered questions. The test questions were right off of the slides - as long as you study you'll do fine.
Prof Alva will not mess up anyone's GPA. Organic Chem is very difficult to learn but he tries to make it as simple as possible. One of the few professors at BMCC that truly teaches at a college level. He gave 3 exams (drops lowest) plus the final. Exams are not mutilple choice, make sure you do the hw since the tests are very similar.
4 exams and a final. Drops the lowest grade. You have to teach yourself the material. He just reads from the slides. And the questions on the tests are about tiny details. Hard but he does give As.
this professor is useless, pleasse do not take his class if you have another option. he teaches nothing and expect you to teach yourself. he doesnt take his time to explain things in class. i will never advice anyone to take his class
Orgo requires practice, practice, practice! Alva stressed this at the start of the class and he was 100% correct! I worked full time when I took Che 230 and went to class/lab 4 days/week and still found the time to study and get an A! Don't be discouraged by the NEG reviews... If you do not learn Organic from Alva, you will learn how to study!
Horrible teacher. If you have questions he will just brush you off. You need to teach yourself. Don't waste a semester!!!
if you are willing to teach yourself, take his class. if not don't even try because you will not learn anything from him. he will simply read( not explain) his powerpoint slide.
well...if you have trouble understanding the mechanics of chemistry or chemistry isnt really your thing, don't take this organic chemistry class more people fail his class or drop than pass. believe me only take him if chemistry is a strong subject for you, he doesn't give you an exam review or nothing, he just "talks"and makes fun of people
His explanations are not good, but I found his tests easy because is based on the homework. If you do the homework you will be fine.
I'm currently in his class and I have decided to write this as a warning. This man in someway has impacted me in a negative way. He is rude and demeaning. He talks to his students as if they were animals. He is bias toward the students he feels are not capable. If you do not have to take him please don't.
I don't think he means to be rude, but he can be very demeaning. He is into posting grades in front of the class and if someone knows your grade do you know how embarrassing that is. He is not fun to talk to if you let him get to you he can be nerve wrecking. If you have another choice for org choose someone else.
Me. Alva is a very difficult person to understand. To be genuinely honest even if he was negative my experience with him has taught me to never give up. His old school way of thinking has pushed me to study more and actually realize that I am capable of anything as long as I believe. I wish him well.
Mr. Alva honestly is not a difficult professor. Everything he gets is right out of the text book. If you have the self discipline to study each chapter in detail you will ace his exams. Also, don't take they way he speaks to you or his comments seriously he is not great with communication. Just do what you have to do and ignore the rest.
Alva gets a hard time from students. And while he could slow down and explain some things, heres why I like him: 1)attendance is flexible 2)no homework, great for working students 3) he curves, and drops questions 4) if you stay in class, and ask questions, HE WILL HELP! Don't just get mad and leave. That's YOUR BAD, NOT HIS! Chem is hard, duh.

People who give him bad reviews clearly dont want to study - he was very nice to me and always helpful, never had to ask him twice - he is a good grader but if you clearly lack knowledge - dont take his class - plus you cant take orgo if you need to add 18+22 on calculator ! come on people - get a grip! lots of ppl drop - which i think is great!!
Pausee and let's all praise the lord. I actually passed orgo I with B+. The thing with Alva is that tou need to do ALL the work by yourself. Don't expect him to spoon fee you... You'll be deceived. To be honest I actually found his class ok. When I first read the comments i was like "errm nope" but then i gave it a try.. And guess what? I am taking him for orgo II.you are safer when dealing with the devil you already know ahaha! Very sarcastic professor. But i don't mind cause I minor in sarcam!
They say a good teacher tells you were to look, but does not tell you what to see. Alva is genuinely not a horrible professor. His approach is misunderstood. He is tough because he desires his students to genuinely learn. He pushed me and that I am thankful for.
The tests that he gives is NOT HARD. BUT... BIG BUT. HE HATES GIVING PARTIAL CREDIT! There are so many points that he penalizes me for. In terms of grading fairness, I give him a 0. However, I have to admit. I did learn a lot in his class. How? I READ AND DID ALL THE WORK MYSELF! His lectures are abysmal, his accent is heavy, and he's very snarky.
Professor Alva is a really nice guy. Was a student this semester in a class with about ten students. It was a tough journey and I didn't understand anything until the fourth exam after he encouraged me to DO, not try, my best. I thought I was going to do a lot worse, but he's really nice. It's all on you to know the material. Labs are easy too.
I don't know how, maybe it was just tenacity, but I didn't get A's in all of his tests. In fact, I only really received one A in a test. I thought I was going to get a C+/B-, but I ended up with an A. Still, I don't really recommend him. You should have a better professor to explain things.
Appreciate him. I took him for Chem. 230 a while back. I won't lie there was a point I had a dislike for this man, however he taught me a lot in reference to what it means to work hard for something you desire. My understanding is he worked hard for it so should his students. Don't take him so personally. "Don't try, Just do it."- Alva
Prof like Carlos needs to understand that being a tough prof is not synonomous with being a good prof. A good prof sees that the class is struggling and does something about it. A good prof sees that when its the WHOLE class complaining maybe he's the problem. This is not the type of subject where one is expected to know EVERYTHING Understand that!
The material is tough, and so is he. Doing all the problems in the textbook is essential to doing well on his tests. He's nice, but can get cranky late in the day, so if you need help, it's best to catch him before 4 pm. If you feel like he's picking on you, he's probably just kidding around, so lighten up.
I wouldn't recommend taking this course over the summer. Everything was crammed into 7 weeks and this is a topic that shouldn't be condensed. You're on your own in terms of learning the material. He gets all the problems from the textbook so make sure you do ALL of them (aside from the challenge problems) and then re-do the problems over and over.
First, I would not recommend this prof to anyone. I know this is a tough course for everyone but clearly he doesnt do his job. When students ask him how the test looks like, he always answers do the problems from the textbook. However, his lecture(powerpoint) is the same as the textbook. He only cover few of them.
He is not good at explaining and he just zooms thru the power point slides and expects us to understand Some questions on the exams are things not from the slides or textbook Takes the time to read the labs and takes off points 4 anything Attendance is NOT mandatory He can be rude and when asked a question or clarification he completely ignores It
Wash time & money!!!!
This professor is upfront on the 1st day of class, if you do not read the text book you will not pass. The exam questions are from the text however his teaching style is the issue he only reads from the powerpoint never reviews the different style of the questions unless you ask him. Stay away guys!!
DO not ask a question because he will ask you the same question back. He wants you to think for yourself . And don't ever think he doesn't see or hear you because he does! Your work must be on point at all times no mistakes for him. Good Luck
Good things: drop the lowest one, give extra credits, funny but not friendly. Bad things: strictly follow the lab rules, just use pp slides which sometimes hard to understand the concept.
Horrible professor. He hates to answer questions. He just reads off of the PowerPoint slides ,and his study guide is unclear.
The worst professor at bmcc. He just sits in class and reads off the powerpoint presentation. He is not helpful at all and gets annoyed when students ask him any questions.
You basically do all of the work yourself. He is extremely rude and demeaning and absolutely hates to explain the material properly to students.
The absolute worst. He is very rude and condescending.
Terrible experience. You are basically your own professor.
please don't take him if you want to get good grade !!!!!
He hates to give any explanation in the lab. He just runs through and reads the powerpoint with no explanation. Be prepared to do all of the work yourself.
The worst. Do not take him if you have other options.
Horrible. Alva just does not care.
The labs are the worst. He doesn't explain the theory behind experiments at all. He expects u to know everything by yourself. He writes nothing on the board, just handouts. It's very difficult to assemble equipments and understand the theory without the help of ur Professor. This Prof. just leaves u there hanging. U understand nothing at the end.
This professor is the worst professor when it comes to willingness to answer questions and help his students. He got annoyed after two clarifying questions and even more annoyed when he had to get off his seat. He stayed on his phone they entire class. Beware ready to teach yourself and get a 0 on a lab if you get 3 questions wrong.
Okay, so I see professor Alva has a lot of bad ratings. In all honesty he kinds of deserves it, but the truth is he isn't that bad. YOU JUST HAVE TO PUT IN THAT EXTRA WORK!! If you are able to study on your own then you should be fine but if you depend on a prof for understanding a course, then don't take his class. He gave feedback that helped me.
I took this professor during the summer . Professor went too fast and was annoyed when you asked him questions. Does not answer emails and doesnt not help you outside of class . DO NOT TAKE THIS PROFESSOR.
Horrible professor. Do your self a favor and dont go through this. Reads through powerpoint, makes fun of people in the class, discourages people in the class. Cant answer questions idk if he is professor or he is just there to make money. You can study this class from youtube on ur own. Taking his class waste of your money and time.
Prof. Alva is a good teacher who frequently checks in with the students to make sure the material is clear. He encourages questions and is always accessible for one-on-one meetings. The material is not hard but needs to be heavily practiced. Prof. Alva gives plenty of practice questions and extra material to students. The book is very helpful.
when I took this class i expected the worst bc of the rates, honestly he was a good professor. In every class you have to work for your grade, dont be lazy do the lab reports, he gave us 4 exams & a final, he drops the lowest test grade & 1 lab report. Its a little hard to understand his accent but dont be afraid to ask questions he is nice.
Hes a really sweet professor super understanding and hes willing to work with you. He didnt give hw only labs which were a cake walk similar to short essays he also gave 3 exams and a Final which also arent too difficult hes a good professor and cares about his students and if you have trouble he does his best to help, Im taking him again.
I enrolled in this class with Prof. Alva, but I had to drop it due to a change in work schedule. When I was in the class, he gave good lectures and his exams were fair. He was good about answering questions.
Very bad attitude. Doesn't know how to teach. Save your GPA
Orgo is a tough class, especially when taken in the summer condensed version. That said, Alva is a great professor and extremely fair. Just go to class, ask questions, and follow along in the textbook. I do recommend taking the normal class not the summer condensed one though
Horrible Professor who doesnt know how teach. He ruined my gpa. Avoid his class
This professor is the most difficult one in the department. His exams are very difficult. You also have to teach yourself. Avoid his class if you care about your GPA
Avoid and run from this professor. Very tough exams and tough grader. He's not flexible a all.
You might as well teach yourself. Professor Alva doesn't care for the students' performance. He expects you to know everything just after one lecture. Don't take him if you wan't to keep a good gpa.
The lectures were long and you need to create your own study guide because the practice test did not consisted of any tests.
-verryyyy insulting and harsh when you ask ques. RUDE! -you're teaching yourself, just reads/ rushes thru lectures -TOUGH grader, and barely any assignments sooo you need a good grade on the little he assigns to get a great final grade -careless asf -Has a heavy accent -Terrible explainer -HAVE to know the coursework VERBATUM before going 2 him
He can be generous if you survive to the end of the course.........
I had to drop the class mid semester. He is very racist. Made a comment of two people from different country that they all look alike AKA Chinese. Do not bothered asking him any question because he wont answer. Very hard to understand what he is saying. He's exam reviews are not helpful ATALL.
I would like all of you students to know that the test book chapters won't help you in the exams. There are no review before exams. He has a very poor practice test which consist of only 10 questions that are not related to exams at all. He just reads his slides in a monologue in the lecture and doesn't help during the lab. Doesn't answer questions.
I took Alva during the summer, his lectures were only good for the problems he went over which were then repeated on the exam. Very lenient grader for lab reports. For lab he's not the greatest as he barely explains it. Exam and labs constituted the grade. You have to teach yourself everything and its best to do it before class. Other wise he's ok.
As it was a summer class, I went in knowing it was going to tough. However, I was not expecting to have to teach myself all the material. He is not available outside of class as he's "too busy" - no office hours and does not respond to emails. Lecture sounds like he is talking to himself rather than actively trying to teach the class to understand.
Took the class in the summer, was tough but if you're doing pre-med most of the courses you will be taking are going to be self taught material. He dropped the lowest exams and actually curved after that. Good guy but rough with teaching. Exams are easy if you pay attention in class.
Prepare to not be actually taught material and then be berated that you don't understand. His slides are just images from the textbook with no context and he does not actually teach.Don't take in summer, not enough time to teach yourself. Grades are just based on exams and lab.
Do not take him no matter what. He is the worst professor I have ever had. Very rude to everyone and cannot teach to save his life. The only people who are passing the class are those who are taking it for the third time. Save your time and do not deal with him. I do not know why he still has a job.
You could not pay me to retake that class. By the time of the final there was only 5 people left. I am not sure how he has a job. The worst professor I have ever had in my life. Can not teach and expects you to know everything already.
This is the first time I am rating a professor just to tell you how awful he is. The only lessons he provides are reading off the powerpoint,he takes offense to people asking questions and the only determining factors are labs (16%) and exams make up the rest To top it off the lessons are not even relevant to the exams themselves Avoid at all costs
This is my first time eating a professor just to tell you how awful he is The only "lessons" he gives is reading the PowerPoint and he takes offense if you ask any questions to top it off 84% of your grade is made up by tests and the PowerPoint is not relevant to the exam content. Avoid this professor at all costs or you will commit gpa suicide.
This is my first time eating a professor just to tell you how awful he is. His idea of lessons is just reading the PowerPoint and he takes offense if you ask questions. To top that off the only real determining factor of your grades, exams (make up 86%) have content hat will literally never be discussed in class. Avoid at all costs.
He is a very tough grader. I would recommend you teach yourself and go to tutoring. He does not give resources, he just teaches the PowerPoints in class only. It was also hard for me to take notes because he jumps from slide to slide. Worst teacher for a hard course like this
I took this guy years ago-on the 1st day, states he failed Organic Chemistry twice. Refused to answer any questions during office hours or during class + openly mocked students for asking a question. Made disparaging comments how private school kids are taking this class at BMCC to take advantage of the system. Surprised he's still allowed to teach
