He seems very nice and very knowledgable. I am not really good at math so him not being clear to me is no reflection on him. All and all I think he is a good teacher.
this teacher knows what he is talking about. but in his class are you are is a number.... he just learned my name and its the last week of the semester. he doesn't go over tests after you take them. his tests aren't really hard but they're tricky i wouldn't take him again
He thinks we should all love Algebra as much as he does even though we're only there because we have to be. He doesn't talk at all until class starts, then he jumps into Algebra. He is very serious & keeps you there until the very last minute of class. The class is hard. I don't recommend him.
This guy is on "fast forward"! He flys through the material and does not seem to care if you unerstand it. Forget about asking questions about the homework...seems like a bother to him. The class is about half of the size it was at the begining of the semester...go figure! Praying to pass. Find another instructor if you must take this class!
doesn't let you use ANY notes for tests (formulas need to be memorized!) and if you email him, don't expect a response back!
this guy moves fast! doesnt go over homework, gives alot of homework, tests take forever, hopefully i pass.
He is the MATH NAZI!! If you don't get it, you are too scared to ask a question. He seems superior at math and shame on you if you are not into it! Tough tests! Very tricky! Try to take someone else. You will be glad you did. Good luck!
The class was ok .But if u didnt do the homework there is no way you could pass in this class. Tests are basically depends upon the homework. He is a little bit fast because he starts slowly and at the end put all the pressure on us.He wont help u unless u ask for it.His grading is confusing.I recommend him if u are good at math (algebra)
poor teaching and not easy to talk to or review anything with. It is very hard if you never had this type of math before..
This is by far the worst teacher ever. Math is not my best but I'm not stupid and he was impossible to understand. Also very disorganized, didn't hand back tests unless asked, etc. Flew through the last 2 chapters in 2 days, sometimes refused to answer questions or acted impatient about it. Gave out useless study guides-should not be teaching!
Mr. Burke knows his stuff. He teaches based on methods he has determined to be helpful in remembering the formulas and processes to solve problems. I am a lousy math student and still managed an A. He helped whenever I asked, covered every homework problem that was requested and moved on. That's the way it works. I would take him again.
I HATE THIS TEACHER!!! he talks just like a computer. if you are not good at math DONT TAKE THIS TEACHER!!! you can not understand the material and he just flies through chapters. He doesn't like answering questions. I had to withdraw from this class thats how bad hes is. Beware of Burke
this guy is all business and never smiles goes lightning fast through chapters. impossible to pass
horrible horrible person. Does a chapter a day and will not help you. Does not go over homework. The problems on his tests are different than the material he covered. Never take Burke!
Terrible teacher. Took trig in highschool and got straight A's with ease. Retook it again in college simply to get the credits and this guy made the same material 4x harder. Never smiles, doesn't give partial credit, flies through chapters. I got all A's and 1 F (his class) had to drop.
I love this teacher. He was very helpful to me and my questions. If I could take him for all my math classes I would without any hesitation.
I would not reccoment this guy to ANYBODY. If you have to take his class then I wish you all the luck in the world(hopefully that will be enough for a B-). I figured I'd be fine since I'm good in math and took pre-clac in highschool. Very wrong. It doesn't matter how good you were in the past, you will not pass with Burke!
i had to withdrawl for the first time ever. horrible teacher. i dont recommend him to ANYONE
Not a fan. He talks in monotone and moves very quickly. Not a terrible guy though. I would only recommend him as a last resort.

Very hard teacher and flies through examples on board, flies through material started class with over 30 people last class there were about 10 left and of the 10 some were not sure if they were going to pass. If you are new to material plan on spending alot of time in the tutoring center
If u aren't strong in math & need someone patient, DON'T take him. Flies thru material, starts new sections w/ 4 min. left in class! Doesn't really know how to teach, just regurgitates info to you. U spend the whole class watching him do problems on the board. I went to all classes and put in extra time, still an extremely hard class.
It would be smart to avoid Mr. Burke! He is unhelpful, and half of the time the students are correcting him. He makes it clear the first day of class that attendance is crucial! Do not plan on skipping a day here and there. He claims he gives partial credit on tests, which is a complete lie. Only take him if you are capable of teaching yourself.
Terrible! 15 of the worst teachers I've ever had. Repeats everything he says twice, starts the class really slooowww realizes he's running out of time, then rushes like a madman. Doesn't review tests. You are better off having the janitor teach you math.
worst math teacher i have ever had...had calc in hs and got an A on everything...have to do everything his way and does not give partial credit...coughs throughout the whole class every three seconds...flies through the information...makes class run over the time alloted...this bill cosby figure makes the class so boring
I had this guy for Pre-calc and trig and I think he was a great professor. If I needed to take another math, I'd take it with Burke Again!
HE was a great professor n if I needed another math I would definitely take him again. I had him for Trig and Pre-calc so for me to do well in both those, he was a good teacher.
Horrible teacher. Doesnt take time to review hw so dont even bother, his answers to your questions sound like baby talk and he lectures the whole class. He doesnt even give partial credit so if u have the right work and wrong answer you pretty much fail the semester
this guy was a complete waste of my time and money, he doesnt help anyone and if you want to pass the class i suggest not taking burke
He should be fired. He sucks at teaching. Its like watching a robot blab on and on. He acts like he wants you to fail. GCC should be a shame of theirselves for keeping this guy there as a so called teacher. THE WORST EEVVVEEERRR!!!
Mr. Burke's class is very difficult. I agree that he should not be allowed to teach. He is not helpful at all and acts like he wants you to fail. If you can't teach yourself math, don't take this class.
He is a hard, hard teacher. If you work hard, read, take off from work, and study hard, then you will pass. if he is trying to catch up to meet the criteria that he wants to achieve by the end of the class then dont ask him questions because it's like talking to a brick wall!!
Burke is a good teacher. He has alot of information that he has to cover and he makes you work reallyy hard to get a good grade, but in the end its worth it. I hated the class at the time but now I feel totally prepared to take calc 2. Best of all the final in calc one takes the place of your lowest grade, so ace the final and your OKay.
i would not take him again. he talked the entire class time and constantly has his back turned to write on the board. you take notes the entire class. going to class is very important but going to it is hard because its no boring.
This guy is HANDS DOWN the hardest teacher ive ever had. The funny thing is that the material is fairly easy and he is clear. The problem is that he gives like 4 tests and 2 quizes and has very little question on them (i had a 5 question quiz and 9 question test) to make matters worse there is NO partial credit and NO extra credit.
Professor is very rude and doesnt do a very good job of teaching
he goes way to fast when he does problems , gives homework and never goes over it to see if you made mistakes . i really did't like having him as a teacher. he is good for people who like to get taught fast. but not me
I agree he is a little too fast for us non-math people, but the college loads up the class with a lot of info to teach in a fairly short time. He is available for 1-1 if you ask, so I don't agree with the really negative statements, but non-math people could probably find someone better geared for beginners.
He once made me stand in front of the room n speak to him in fluent german i dont even know german so he forced me to learn it or else hed kick me out of beautiful gcc i wanna smack him in his big bald head THIS TEACHER SUCKS NOT A FAN
please, those of who are trying to take math, take anyone but Mr. burke. even if you like math and it's your favorite subject or you want to be a math teacher, do not take him. you will fail doesn't matter how good you are in math. he will not let you in class if you're 20 minutes or more late. he's a good teacher and teaches well, but not the way
please, those of who are trying to take math, take anyone but Mr. burke. even if you like math and it's your favorite subject or you want to be a math teacher, do not take him. you will fail doesn't matter how good you are in math. he will not let you in class if you're 20 minutes. he's a good teacher and teaches well, but not the way you can learn

I had Carlos Burke for Calc 1 and he was a good teacher...than came calc 2. the homework was reasonable..and he explained everything well. but on the tests he would put impossible problems..watch out! gives no partial credit
very disrespectful person, incredibly rude. he doesnt help with home workat all!, and no partial credit on test and quizes and his test are pretty difficult, i highly recomend avoiding Burke at all cost, i had him for calc 1 & 2, i got good grades, but i am a math major, if you dont like math, this guy will put the last nail on your coffin
Fact: Burke does nothing but repeat exactly what the book says and write it on the board Fact: Burke is rude when you ask him reasonable questions Fact: There's no reason to take him if you can avoid it.
very hard class!! His test are almost impossible. He does not give partial credit. He expects your answers to be PERFECT even when he knows you understand what your doing and you make little stupid mistakes. I got a an (A-) in his class, BUT that is only because i am really good at math on my own. The majority of my class FAILED!
Alot of people give Burke a hard time but I think hes great! His class is DEFINATELY a challenge.. I studied really hard but i got an A in calc 2 and I'm realy not even good at math. As long as you pay attention in class and REALLY study everything he teaches you'll be fine. Make sure you keep all your tests bc the ??s are usualy on your final
burke did everything he could to "kinda sorta" fail me but i survived him. i do not have a problem with the lightning quick teaching methods. i do have a problem with the tests that do not follow the chapters that were taught. i do not suggest taking burke unless you have a lot of extra time
WORST TEACHER IVE EVER HAD. Honestly does not care whether you pass or not. Avoid him as much as you can
IMPORTANT: If are having/have had any problem with Mr. Burke I URGE YOU to speak with the Dean. I took the time to do this, and it's only a matter of time before the higher ups at GCC catch on to Burke's unfair and unhelpful methods.
horribleeee worst math ever
This guy needs to realize he teaches college 050 because.. um never did algebra in highschool. He flys through the material and gives minimum time on exams. If you are new to algebra and want to pass, dont waste your time. Study your life away, his tests will NUC you. Entire class is failing. Does not give enough study material.
IMPORTANT, burke is a good professor and knows is stuff, the course has to much info for amount of time to teach, he must move fast to cover material, if you want to learn alot and progressive far and beyond but fail first time around take him, or you can pass another teacher and struggle the rest of your math career. ALG 1 TIMER, WILL DEF FAIL,
I have taken algebra several times, and I finally get it with professor burke. I think he covers the material thoroughly. He also hands out a pre quiz and pre tests that have the exact same questions or very similar to the questions on the actual test. The course is challenging, but I def. think he does a great job with the material.
Professor Burke is the absolute worst professor I have ever had. I am an excellent math student and have gone straight through calculus, but I am failing precalc because of him. He is crystal clear when teaching, but his exams consist of all of the difficult problems that were never explained to the class. Do not take him if you want to pass.
Tests do not have material covered in class. Took the first test and was told that trig identities would NOT be needed. Guess what? Trig identities were needed. Or, he goes over how to do a specific type of problem 5 minutes before the test. Gives 1 example of each problem in notes, but on the tests the problems are nothing like the notes.
please help yourself by not taking him for MAT 108. it's a shame that the class really should not be hard but the way he teaches the material makes it almost impossible to pass. do yourself a favor and take another professor even if you have to change your class schedule for it.
such an ****, he should be fired
I took his class at 8 in the morning, and i thought i could handle the morning class, but with his monotone voice it was like i was just dozing off for the entire class. The test were hard as hell, and i only could answer half of the first question. I would NOT recommend this teacher to anyone. He goes to fast, is boring, and has no energy at all.
I am taking Burke right now and i think he is a horrible teacher. he moves way too fast and his and tests are not what you learn in class.
I had him in Fall of '05. To this day, he is still the absolute worst teacher I have ever had. He just zips though all of the material, isn't clear on anything, and his tests were way too confusing. I don't care what you have to do, do not take this teacher for any reason!
Probably the worst teacher I've ever had. There is no incentive to do any homework because it never counts, and you have to ask him multiple times to go over anything you don't understand. The Pre-tests he gives aren't like any class examples, and most questions are from the class right before the test.
If you're taking Burke, be sure you don't have a class starting right after! He tends to go anywhere from 5-15 minutes over every few classes. He doesn't give any partial credit! His class is broken down into short nearly impossible quizzes and tests that are just as impossible! Pre-Quizzes and Pre-Tests may include stuff that was NEVER covered!
horrible
I have two more classes left with him and im not sure but i think im going to fail. He is the worst teacher i think i ever had.
During class I thought he went way too fast - and I didn't like it when he didn't let someone in class for being too late. I needed to use a lot of other resources to help me learn, but he did offer to help during his office-time, and I ended up with a "B", so maybe he knows what he's doing after all? Still probably not my first choice though.
Funny guy if you pay attention. His class was cake, but I had taken algebra in high school so I knew the material. He does not make you do homework but he assigns them for practice. provides pre-quizes with answers before actual quizes and sometimes they are the same exact questions.
He is an extremely hard teacher. His quizzes aren't that hard but his tests are usually impossible and the tests include problems that he never taught or explain. He goes fast and he does not stop until ten minutes after the class is supposed to be over. If you have him GOOD LUCK!
WORST math teacher EVER! I managed a B+ in high school pre-calc and his class D-. He almost never gives partial credit, the entire thing could be a . off and you get nothing! Don't take him if you don't have to!
TERRIBLE TEACHER HIS CLASS WAS AWFUL!
Run away! He makes reading the book confusing. He teaches straight out of the book and gets majority of his own examples wrong. Totally rude and unhelpful to his students. Homework in not mandatory, but I suggest if you take him do it and take it to tutoring. I am a naturally straight A student, but I got to know the tutoring teachers very well.
This teacher is the absolute worst ever.
Burke is really not that bad....as long as you study you will be fine. Getting tutored at the LRC really helped me.
I took stats with him a few weeks ago, the begging of the class started out easy but it was a turn from there. there was 15 students on the first day, by the last there was 6. everyone either failed or droped out of the class. he spent too much time on little details and not the overall picture.
HE IS THE MOST HORRIBLE TEACHER I'VE EVER TAKEN!!! HE LIVES IN THE WORLD OF SINCE HE KNOWS IT, EVERYONE ALREADY HAS TO. INSTEAD OF TEACHING YOU ANY OF THE METHODS, HE JUST BREEZES THROUGH PROBLEMS ON THE BOARD WHILE MAKING HORRIBLE NOISES WITH HIS MOUTH!!! I SERIOUSLY DO NOT RECOMMEND TAKING HIS CLASS, YOU'LL DEFINITELY HATE IT!!!
He is honestly the worst teacher I have ever had. In highschool I went through pre-calc and calculus and in both I recieved a B...but I ended up with a D- in his class, and i have to take it again. His quizzes are impossible, and his tests are the same. I wish I would've seen this site before I took his class...
He should have been fired a long time ago to allow May's to become a full time teacher, but i guess they have to keep a minority quota no matter how bad of a teacher they are.
In all seriousness, Mr. Burke is probably one of the best teachers I've had. He doesn't hand you an A just for attending. As long as you pay attention, do the homework, and study, you're good to go. If you need help, come a little early to class and he'll help you, and if you need more, talk to him! He's a good teacher, just work for your grade.
Mr. Burke is a great teacher. However, I think he is faced with a flawed system that makes the class impossible to retain any of the information. Mr. Burke will go over the homework, which you'll get every night and and try to answer and explain your questions, but you have to answer them. MAT 050 is a money making scam and then want u to fail.
HORRIBLE teacher runs through the lesson with no time to figure anything out for yourself. hes on to the sext section before you can even thing of digesting what the last one was about.
This class was horrible. I never missed a class, always did my homework, but I could not get an A in this class. I got an A in preCalc no problem. Most people I talked to in this class had a problem, even the smartest guy. He didn't give us a chance to increase our grades with extra credit or anything. I studied for hours and could not get an
Worst teacher I've ever had. First day he basically said he doesn't like questions. He constantly calls students out on stuff like cell phones or sleeping. Minding, I don't think that stuff cool either but this is college, not high school.
I've done all of the homework, wrote literally a notebook and a half worth of notes, I've studied at every opportunity I've gotten and I can truly say that I understand all of the concepts of calc however, I've yet to receive a passing grade. This last test I worked my butt off just to receive a 35! The tests are off topic from the hw and teaching.
Horrible teacher i really wish i listened to everyone who told me that hes was a bad teacher. bad at explaining things. no mercy. his test come from the homework but dosent go over it and what he gives the answers arent in the back of book
Smart guy n will show u 10 ways or more to do a problem! Instead of 1 way so u can grasp it! Absolutely ridiculous when grading tests! He marked my problem wrong when the answer was correct! I brought it to his attention n he said, "one of my steps was wrong so all of it is wrong!" He is HORRIBLE! LISTEN TO US N DONT TAKE HIM!!!
MONOTONE. If you pay attention and take notes you will definitly do good. If you slack and don't come to class you'll probably have to retake the class. He gives you a complete study guide before tests or quizzes with answers and the work to solve them. He never collects or checks homework!
Smart guy and all, but when it comes to teaching just not feelin it. Even though Calc 2 is a hard class he didnt help make it any easier. With this all said, i never went to class
Literally the worst teacher i've ever taken, I love math and i'm pretty good at it. After taking this class he made me now hate math especially, because I fully understand all the topics. He purposely tries to trick you on the tests and most tests are things we didn't cover in class. He is a very harsh grader. DON'T TAKE HIM!!!!!!!!!!!!!
HORRIBLE! i have already been having trouble in math before the class and after taking this class during the fall semester i now have even more trouble understanding the concepts, very monotone and boring especially during a night class.. gives homework but doesnt check it for a grade.. do not take. period
Terrible teacher. Worst I have ever had. One of those teachers who thinks math is the easiest thing in the world, and therefore expects you to understand it just as much as him. Tests you on stuff he didn't go over in class. Rude and does not give you any wiggle room. Does not do well with confrontation.
Actually, not as bad as these people say. If you are good at Pre-Calc, and understand that material, hes not to bad. Aside from one test, I got above a 72 on everything. Also, a nice person. Take this course if you want a real college challenge.
First of all, if you fail any of his classes it is because you did not try and expected it to be a walk in the park. I personally think he is a very easy professor. He gives you a pre-test which is the same as the test but with different numbers.Plus he allows you to have a page of notes for the test. He is also willing to help if you just ask!!!!
He is pretty monotone & his class is not at all "exciting" but he does explain things well, and if you do the homework, you should be okay. I had a pretty good background in calc already, but his teaching style is pretty basic: takes notes, do homework to reinforce, take exam. He also gives you pretests & lets you have a sheet of notes each exam
He once made me wear a skirt to class. I am a dude but he wanted to see my balls. idk what that has to do with math but whatever take if you dare
Horrible Teacher. I am currently taking him in a summer course. Does not check homework.. Only shows you one example of a formula and it is the simplest version. Does not do a review for any exam. Expects you to comprehend math as well as him. He constantly screws up the calculations for his OWN examples. Doesn't curve or correct wrong problems
Nicest teacher, always willing to help. If you pay attention, study and do the homework you have everything you need to get an A. His pre-tests are exactly what the test questions will be. Folks that dislike him are obviously not interested in doing any work in class. I got an A+ and math is my kryptonite.
He is completely boring, he assigns a ton of homework but he won't check them. I never want to attend his class. I wouldn't recommend him to anybody. You have to take notes and do work or else you won't pass his class.
I had him for statistics and I am taking him now for pre-calc. I have always struggled with math classes but Mr. Burke thoroughly explains the material and assigns homework that correlates with it. His pre-tests is the same thing as the test just with different numbers. The only grades are exams, the final exam can replace ur lowest exam
I have always struggled w/ Math. Mr. Burke made it easy. The notes are clear & helped me to do my homework. He gives a Pre-test before EVERY test that is the TEST with different #s used. If you do the homework & show up to classes you JUST cant fail. Nicest Prof. on campus always willing to help JUST ASK.
Burke was a horrible teacher. Didn't go over homework, rushed through lessons without explaining anything thoroughly, tests were unnecessarily hard in comparison to homework and study guides. RUN AWAY, find someone else.
WORST PROFESSOR EVER. DO NOT TAKE HIM. I FAILED HIS CLASS BECAUSE HE DOESN'T GIVE PARTIAL CREDIT AND IT PREVENTED ME FROM GRADUATING! AND KEEP IN MIND I AM AN A STUDENT WITH A GPA OF 3.7 YOU WOULD CONSIDER CHANGING YOUR MAJOR BEFORE YOU TAKE THIS TEACHER.
One of the worst teachers ever. Confused himself with his own notes, constantly talked to himself, never explained anything.
DO NOT TAKE HIM. He doesn't interact with his students at all, so the class is very boring and drags on all period. You only get 4 tests, one of which is the final. NO OTHER GRADES. I dropped two whole letter grades over one test and couldn't bounce back. Awful grading system, he's not good at explaining things. DON'T DO IT.
Hands down worst professor I've ever had. Always been good at math and usually excelled in every course. Not this one. He doesn't interact with students. Class is boring. Review questions on the PRE-TESTs are nothing like what you go over in class. Doesn't collect or review homework. Expects everyone to be on the same level. Don't take him.. simple
Probably the worst calculus teacher ever. Average grade on the tests were in the 40s and 50s some people in the 20s. Marks the entire problem wrong if you make one little mistake and no partial credit. Highest grade in the class semester was a C. Do not take this teacher if you do then you will regret it. He should be removed from this school.
Please do not take Burke. HE is absolutely one of the worst math teachers i have ever had. You only get 4 tests and no other grades. He seems to confuse himself and is not very helpful. I usually get good grades in math but in his class i have failed. He is very boring and he seems to not even want to teach.
A lot of students had trouble with this class. I found that he was very clear at explaining the material. It was tough that he didn't give parietal credit on tests given the nature of math, but at least he put problems on the test that you should be familiar with as long as you paid attention in class and do some hw)
Good teacher, he's just tough and dosent care to have a relationshhip with his class but lets just judge him on the fact that he teaches the material and does so very thouroughly
Burke knows what he is talking about. He may be a hard professor, but if you're willing to learn and pay attention, you'll do fine. Study guides are exactly like tests with different numbers. Boring, but a great professor.
I really struggled a lot in Burke's class. He's a very boring individual so it was difficult to pay attention. Also he's a very harsh grader, no partial credits. And a big problem that I had was I'd solve the problem differently then he instructed, so he'd mark it wrong. It's just a very frustrating class.
Do not take class with Mr. Burke unless you are a total Math wiz!! Rude, boring, seems like he doesn't even want to be there and you are bothering him. If you get the answer correct but don't do the work correctly, he will mark the answer wrong. Explains something 1 time and as soon as think you got it, hes on to something new. fast pace.
Probably the worst math teacher. Does not give partial credit whatsoever. Likes to makes childish noises while grading tests which is hilarious. Also seems to pull his hip every Wednesday and make again another hilarious sound affect which almost make it worth not dropping his class
If you're bad at math and test taking i would not recommend taking Professor Burke's class. The only thing your grade is based off of is TESTS AND QUIZZES. No homework credit (even though he assigns HW every class), no extra credit, NOTHING. The Worst. Thank god for the tutoring center, that's all i can say. 14
THE WORST teacher I have ever had. I'm not horrible at math, and my father is a math tutor and I STILL failed. Doesn't give out many grades,so if you do bad on one test it's hard to get back up. There was so much on the final he NEVER taught us, he did not even have a study guide or a review or anything. He is very rude and boring. DONT TAKE HIM!!
Worst teacher ever! Can't believe he still has a job. Don't bother asking for help; he won't hear of it. I was very good in math in HS, and was hoping for a degree in engineering, now I have to take this class again, even with tutoring and have changed majors.
There are test after each section so take notes throughout. If you do not understand something have him go over it. He is available if you need him. Do his homework even though he does not collect or grade, it is more for you to understand the material. No calculators allowed. Great teacher though!
Burke seems to like to take a look at 90 feet by 90 feet baseball diamonds and make Ryan Howard run 30 meters per second in all of his sport related problems. If the Phillies do terrible expect an American Red Cross style X on your paper.
His class is manageable if you really work for it. He gives a pre-test; however, some of the numbers used on the actual test make it more difficult than the practice. Hes a tough grader and will take off points for little mistakes, so be thorough! Make sure you ask questions, do all of the homework, and definitely study no matter what!
There's nothing to say other than what a horrible professor. When I took Honors Calculus in high school, I passed with an A. When I got to this class, I went from A's to failing two tests. Burke will mark a whole question wrong for something simple, such as not putting a negative sign on an answer. Avoid him if you can.
No need to buy the book because the only reason you need it is to do the homework. He does not grade the homework. The only grade you get for the whole class is on four tests. The study guides he gives do not have all you need to know for the test on them and the questions he does not include are the hardest ones.
He would stand up and lecture the whole class time and no one really understood his teaching ways.
Horrible Professor. I thought i completely understood the material. I took the test and ended up failing it. Had to drop the class to save my GPA. Do not take him. Avoid Avoid Avoid!!!
Absolutely no help, his refusal to give partial credit astounds me and in some cases refusal to give credit for the correct answer really hurt our class. By focusing on the small details and not realizing that we understood the material, I don't believe he should be teaching in the college. P.S I wrote him 4 emails and I did not get one response
Toughest grader you will ever have pretty sure about 12 people dropped the class and I know a few who were not gonna pass even though they tried. You take 3 tests then the final that is what your grade is based off of. Test had problems that he didn't teach, final was all over the place. I would not suggest taking him if you can't teach yourself!!
The entire grade for the class was made up of four tests (19% each), one final exam (24%), and 5 points extra credit for attendance. You have to write all the notes and the textbook is used for homework problems. You are allowed to have one page of notes for every test and tests have no more than 20 problems.
Burke made this class pretty difficult. The tests are the only grades you get in this course. Had to work really hard and study a lot to get a good grade. Always be on time and attend class because he may give you a few extra points in the end. Would not recommend.
Burke does not give any partial credit whatsoever. You may have done the entire problem right and made the smallest mistake on the answer and the entire thing is marked wrong. I have done well on his tests, in my opinion, but the grades I have received beg to differ A LOT. I do not recommend this class.
Dropped class after trig identities I haven't seen or used since high school (and certainly not in this class) showed up on a 13 question test worth about 20% of the grade. The professor clearly knows what he's talking about but just as clearly has unrealistic expectations of people who don't know the material (read: anyone taking his class).
By far the worst professor I've ever had the misfortune to have. Constantly got his own examples wrong which was quite confusing. Horrible grader, if you don't do it his way then it's wrong even if you have the right answer. Half the class was gone after the first two weeks and he straight up told us that only 60% of people pass his class.
Worst teacher I have ever had!! Doesn't care about his students at all only there to do his job. Very boring dull lectures for extremely unsuccessful test results. He doesn't give any partial credit whatsoever you think you did the problem right make one small mistake and the whole answer is marked wrong. Doesn't grade the HW WOULD NOT RECOMMEND.
If you want to fail a class, make sure Burke is your professor. If you want to only have 5 grades all semester, have Burke
HORRIBLE PROFESSOR. The material was super easy, a simple review of high school precalculus. Yet, on tests and quizzes I would always score sub par due to just simple miscalculations. Although I would carry out the problem correctly, simple stupid mistakes I had made due to MINOR miscalculations were perceived by Carlos Burke as zero credit.
DO NOT TAKE HIM. Burke only grades tests, and offers no partial credit, not a single person in my class is passing.
Okay it kills me to be rating Burke so low right now because he is a really great guy but not a great professor. He assigns homework but does not give you any credit for doing it. What does that mean? You're only graded on your tests and he doesn't give partial credit so one slip up and congrats you have the whole problem wrong. DONT TAKE HIM!!
DO NOT TAKE THIS CLASS. It is absolutely horrible. He talks super slow. Will never let you out of class even a second early. Only grades you on 4 tests which have 8-10 questions on each one. Does not give partial credit. Also, if it is not done EXACTLY his way step by step, the WHOLE ENTIRE problem will be marked incorrect. He's non approachable.
DO NOT TAKE THIS PROFESSOR. Even if it's your only option, YOU WILL NOT PASS. He gives absolutely no partial credit on terribly hard tests and drones on during his horribly boring and jumbled lectures. He often explained things wrong and then had to reexplain it leaving the class confused. I had to drop this class to save my gpa and scholarship!
Burke isn't that bad. His grading system is flawed. There were only 5 grades all semester and they were all tests. His lectures might be boring, but he teaches the material well. He allowed us to use notes on the test. He grades the tests very hard, and takes points off for a lot of simple mistakes. If you're a good test taker, you'll be fine.
He is a fairly boring teacher and it's easy to get distracted during his lectures. I am good at math, so I passed with an A, but I felt like I taught myself most of the material by doing the homework. If you're the type of person that struggles with precalc or needs assistance, he is probably not the best teacher.
Great teacher. You just have to understand that you are taking a difficult course. And be able to put in the time and work.
Easily the worst math professor I have had, his lectures are boring, and you are only graded by 5 tests, his grading system is very flawed, almost no partial credit on his tests there have been times where I messed up one simple thing and he marked the whole problem wrong. The only reason I didn't withdraw is because there was only one test in
Burke is nice but he makes class too difficult. The problems on the tests are not too hard but he rarely gives partial credit and we're only graded on 4 tests and a final (with a few points extra for pre-tests). His lectures can get boring and he's been known to make mistakes doing examples, but he explains the material and answers q's well enough.
He's a good enough guy but do not take this class. Confusing, long, boring lectures. Never goes over the homework, and having no such thing as partial credit in a math class is also kind of ridiculous. You have 4 tests and the pretests and that's it. None of his material is on the blackboard and he never answers your emails. Save your GPA.
Only grades are Tests, so be prepared. The test were not too hard, and the concepts are pretty easy to grasp, with maybe a hour outside of class needed to really understand something(in my case). Very respectable teacher, but you gotta be there on time or don't show up. Study guides are almost like the test, and the final was surprisingly easy.
Avoid him as a professor to save your mental state and GPA. He is a nice guy and a jokester! But in the classroom he is very monotone, makes class boring and is hard to stay awake. The content of his class is not hard. Only grades 4 test and a final. Is not consistent with partial credit. Doing practice problems and asking questions should help.
I would not recommend this teacher to anyone. If you have to take him, just don't. Doesn't seem to care about his students at all. Makes mistakes and doesn't fix them. Doesn't follow up with students if they have questions or problems with anything. I'm fortunate that I am good at math, so I did fine in his class, but he is not the professor for me
Burkes class could definitely be challenging at times. He *ONLY* grades 4 tests and a final. He makes mistakes often. Hes pretty accessible and will help you if you ask. Textbook is mandatory so that you can practice. Hes pretty monotone but aside from making mistakes frequently, I thought he was an okay teacher. Tests are not unreasonable.
He will mess up his own Problems multiple times wasting lots of class time, and for our first pretest he printed the wrong answer key then never gave us the right answer key to it and he graded the pretests but he never returned it to us till after the test was taken which meant the pretest was no help at all to review.
If you get this professor drop this class. If you are not very talented at math this class is not for you. Teacher is a good person just not a good teacher. The only grade are the test and he lectures through the whole class and goes over multiple lessons in one class. Very fast pace and not very helpful teacher.
A good guy, very chill you can tell from his vibes, but very booring, knew that from the first day of class, he didn't greet anyone and didn't respond just went straight o the course work, he is mono-tone and uses every send of class time he has. All topics seems so rushed. Don't depend on class to pass. Not worth your GPA DON'T TAKE HIM.
The only grades there are for this class are the tests of which there are 5. He will find ANY reason to take points off if you don't write lim x->2 every time you re-write the problem even if you get the right answer he'll take points off. etc.
I took prof. Burke for calc 1, a very challenging course but I knew what I was getting into. his voice is so nice to listen to. you gotta be locked in to get an A but it isn't impossible. I liked Prof. Burke a lot but the other reviews semi accurate, except for the social ones he's really chill, the exams are the only thing that gets graded.
The lectures can be monotonous, but engaging with the textbook and using study tools like Unstuck ai can really help. Tests are reasonable, and the professor is accessible if you ask for help.
Final grade is dependent on just four tests and a final, so please study and be careful. Overall, the class wasn't too bad and professor Burke wasn't a bad teacher or communicator, just very boring overall. There are definitely better options when it comes to Calculus 2 and other math classes.
this dude sounds like snape from harry potter your grade is only depended on four test + final and he takes points off for the smallest things and he doesn't assign hw, I feel like since he knows how to do pre-calc he expects everyone to understand what he's writing on the board he doesn't explain well and is very fast during class.
I am never taking Burke again, and if you have the opportunity to avoid him, do it. No partial credit, only five exams, and he is the most boring professor I have ever taken. I do well in math and usually enjoy it, but Burke managed to make a fun subject intensely boring and tedious. Absolutely miserable class, waste of time.
