Nice person
I enjoyed this class. Just show up, take notes and read your textbook. Quizzes are easy if you read the material. Very willing to help with any questions that you might have. Highly recommend.
smart guy. nice guy too.. i liked his class
I enjoyed this class, even more so towards the end (only since at the beginning I wasn't looking forward to taking a Sociology class). Highly recommend his classes.
Good class.
Go to class & take notes. Tests are not that easy, but still recommend this class with him.
This class was easy when i took it a year ago. I feel that I didn't learn much about sociology though. Teacher is a great guy and very friendly. I went to class maybe twice a week and the tests were easy.
He doesn't really track attendance but it is in your best interest to go to class as his tests are based on discussions, lectures, and documentaries viewed in class. He clearly wants everyone to succeed and is available to help anyone who is having trouble.
I took the class 'cause I HAD to, and it became my favorite of the quarter. He makes it interesting, he is fun and he loves his subject. I think he's awesome! The tests are fairly easy, just go over your notes for review and you should PASS. Great teacher, great class - I will miss it!!
It's an ok class. I didn't learn anything that I will use in the real world. Took the class because it is required. Overall a pretty easy class.
Easy class. Show up, take notes, pay attention: you'll pass.
great class, very interesting yet a little difficult to grasp. Tests are okay, and he's really nice. He really wanted the students to succeed. I learned a few things in this class that I'm using in a paper for english. I liked this class.
He is hard to follow. He lectures alot and gives way too many study guides ahead of time. Only selected things from 2-3 study guides per test are acctually on the test. The tests are multiple choice and short.
Great teacher. Show up and take notes.
Dr. Castro is a great instructor and really knows his subject. His lectures are always interesting and he always gives study guides out which tell you what is exactly on the test. As long as you pay attention and come to this class, you will do fine.
Amazing professor! You learn a lot from him, and it's a guaranteed A if you show up and pay attention. VERY EASY.
The best professor that I've had so far. Very easy to approach with questions when you don't understand something. He'll explain things in more than one way to help you understand things better. Tests were not easy, but not too difficult either... the only thing that was difficult were how some of the questions were worded.
He is very intelligent and interesting to listen to. He also has a great sense of humor.
Castro was so awesome! He has a great sense of humor and is very helpful. Study guides provide you with everything you need to know for his tests. Even though sociology isn't one of my favorite subjects he kept it interesting and clear. 5 quizzes, 5 assignments, plus the final. Easy A if you come to class and pay attention!
Pretty good professor. Helpful and clears things up if you don't understand it. Interesting class.
Carlos is a nice guy. He's helpful & will clear up any confusions. Took the hybrid class; got a B+. When the class was over he realized he lost 1 of my papers. I resubmitted it & got an A. He is prompt with e-mail responses. I'd recommend him.
People like him because he's pretty easy. Nice guy.
I absolutely love this class! Castro is outstanding, I cant think of anything bad to say about the guy or his teaching method. I highly recommend taking Castro for any SOC classes you have. Hands down one of the best teachers ever! You will learn a lot from this guy...and enjoy it!
its hard to keep up with his lectures and taking notes on his slides is almost impossible yet his quizzes and everything is based off the powerpoints. he doesnt post complete powerpoints on blackboard so it encourages students to come to class.. but the students who are in class have a HARD time taking notes
He's a very nice professor, very intelligent. Only problem is he can be very hard to understand and everything on the quizzes and tests are from his power point slides which he can go through too fast. Study your notes for the quizzes and you'll do fine.
one word... USELESS! if you want to learn nothing, turn in pointless papers, and deal with lectures that are leaning towards a politcal agenda, Go for it, but if you wanna spend your money and learn, stay away.
Carlos is very much informed on what it is to study sociology. He has great information to pass on to his students, and he listens to everyone. If a student has a problem, you can always set appointment with him and he will always do whatever he can to help students understand what he is teaching. Would take another class from him anytime
I loved this teacher and class, he is very intelligent and teaches lectures that relate to the world and that are interesting. I am taking him for SOC2 as well.
Well...this class turned out to be pretty easy...but I had the most difficult time staying awake in his class! He is a very boring teacher, which makes it hard to follow, he also has a heavy accent so he is hard to understand at times. But like I said, pretty easy class, assignment due every other friday and quiz every other friday.
MARRIAGE AND FAMILY -- HUGE WASTE of time and money. He is nice guy, but a terrible teacher. No real lectures, discussions were vapid. Lots of working in groups with no real sense of purpose.
Carlos is a great professor- very laid back but interesting lecturer.
Professor Castro is awesome! Sometimes yes, it can be a little boring but that is because I do not like sociology. Anywho, I liked the class. Show up and pay attention because he replaced attendence with extra credit(in-class work) I think. Grades are weighted by points not by percents(which I liked)COOL CLASS! Definitely recommend.
He's an okay professor, but he can be hard to understand at times due to his accent. I highly recommend printing off the powerpoints of his that are on Moodle and bringing them to class with you, that way if he goes to fast over a slide, you don't miss the info (or you don't have to write it down because you already have it). Easy grader on papers
I loved this teacher! Yes, the lectures might seem to be promoting a political agenda (what class doesn't have one?) and "pointless"- but all sociology classes are like that, unless you want a really blunt teacher. And his accent? Whoever said he was hard to understand has issues. He just said "love" funny. He was really entertaining, too!
Reads of off a slideshow every day. Doesn't clarify when you'll have a test and what chapters to read. Boring and redundant. Sociology was my major until I took this class.
Good professor. Recommend. May seem unapproachable but always is willing to help to understand concepts of class.
Carlos is a great professor. Means well for all of his students. His study guides can be vague, but if you read the book and understand the vocabulary concepts, his tests are easy. There is a political sub agenda, but it is sociology so that is expected. An easy A if you do the work and commit to the class.
Nice guy but very hard to follow, he lectures alot and assumes you already know the same terminology that he does. I am 44 and never heard the term paradigm. He kept saying 'paradine' and I was lost. I got an A, but I feel I didn't come away with much from it. Very hard to follow his lectures. He is nice and smart but jumps in fast and lost me.
His accent is not too difficult to understand, although he doesn't explain his thoughts very well. He fails to answer questions. If you like reading textbooks, this is the class for you! He doesn't teach much in class, & tests are very difficult if you haven't read the chapters as lectures don't cover what's on them. I would not recommend him.
I took his hybrid class and was not impressed he was an easy grader on the assignments and forums but the quizzes were worded so that there could have been two different answers. His accent is also very hard to understand and he doesn't make sense in his lectures.
This instructor is a breath of fresh air. His syllabus was ready online before the term started. He is a passionate lecturer and his feedback on my papers not only helped me understand my grade, but also helped me understand the material even more. I took 'Race and Diversity' and I felt like I grew not only academically but also personally.
Hybrid class. Nice guy but thick accent was hard for me to follow his lectures, tons of reading and his tests don't seem to match the study guide. I got an A but I feel like I didn't learn anything that I can repeat to you today which really bothers me. Online work was clear but again, lectures were dry and hard to follow. Would not take him again
Hybrid class. It was an easy class, the only thing that bothered me was that the tests didn't follow the study guides. Super easy class with tons of extra credit. I don't feel like I learned much but lecture time was where Professor Castro taught very well.
great teacher, use powerpoint always, at least you can get the main point in class, easy going person, I bet everyone loves his class.
Nice class, nice instructor, I got an A in his SOC101 as well. Highly recommand to everyone
Castro is a great professor to take Intro to Sociology with. He explains concepts well, and gives everyone a chance to succeed in his class. 3 written assignments, 3 multiple choice 20 question exams, and one short extra credit assignment that can bump your grade by half a letter grade. Easy final exam.
He provides all the information you need to pass the tests, which are fair. Sometimes it was hard to understand what he wanted in the essays. Often I would be confused about if he was teaching something as fact or as part of a specific person's opinion.
I loved this class. Carlos is funny and very clear. If you read the books, do the study guide, and take notes in class you will get an A.
Prof Castro was helpful and understanding from start to finish. If you don't get it, just ask him. There's extra credit available and a research project. But he gives you plenty of time to work on it.
Super easy teacher. I took his hybrid class, and its 50 minutes a week and almost no homework. His study guides are true to his tests. Easiest class I've ever taken and I would highly recommend to take it with him! Its practically a self taught class, so if your personally motivated, take this class!
I had a wonderful experience in this class. He was able to control the lectures and interject when appropriate. He has a good sense of humor and kept his bias to himself. You can tell he enjoys the subject matter thoroughly and was good at clarifying the material.
He was a good teacher and tried to help when possible. He has an accent so its sometimes hard to understand him. Easy tests and we go over a lot of the material in class-- I would recommend having the book though. Nice guy and great class.
Dr. Castro is the best professor on campus. Hands down! He has a Ph.D in Sociology but you can tell how passionate he is about it. He's unbias and laid back. Very easy to get along with! Super easy exams and assignments. Attendance is not mandatory but if you do attend lectures, I recommend printing his lectures off Canvas first.
3 hw assignments, 3 (20 question) exams, 1 final all easy! Allows extra credit group work is optional textbook is required on a daily basis for in-class discussions great guy! Very respected on campus and passionate about the subject that he teaches
Professor Castro is one of the best professor I have had. He was very approachable and respects his vast variety of students. You can tell how passionate he is about Sociology. There are online 3 discussions, 2-3 written assignments, 3 exams, and a final. He is laid back and understands that Sociology is not for everyone, but makes it fun.
Nice teacher. Reads off power points. Opens your eyes to some of the issues in society around us. Easy grader on papers as long as you put in effort. Very nice and funny man.
Very nice professor, I liked him a lot as a teacher. He set out a well thought out plan for everybody, tests are tough but he has a lot of leeway in dropping test scores. No mandatory attendance, though it does help out your grade.
This class is CAKE. It's mostly online because you only have class 1 day/week for 50 min, that's it. He is the easiest grader I have ever had. The final is not comprehensive and it is stupid easy if you just try a little. He gives extra credit just for attending class 1 day/week. HW is just 1 discussion/wk. If you need to take this class, take his.
Honestly, one of my favorite professors I've taken at Clark. Super nice guy who really cares about the courses he teaches. If you have trouble with foreign accents you may have difficulty but I did not find it to be a problem. To get an "A" just do all of your reading and you should be set. Spends a lot of time elaborating on important material.
Great professor and all around charismatic person. I was dreading sociology until I got to about week 3 here. He truly made it all interesting. 10/10 Bravo good sir.
He can make some clever jokes occasionally, but he is very intelligent about his field of study. He is willing to help, and he drops the lowest test score.
I loved this class! We have tests every two weeks but he hands out a study guide and the day before tests he will go over the study guide and tell you what is going to be on the test. He is super nice and is lectures are good so you don't even have to use the book that much! Best teacher ive ever had.
I love professor Castro! He was so thoughtful, personable and if you follow his study guides you will get an A. The class material was pretty much common sense. Wish I needed another credit that he taught. He was AMAZING!
I really enjoyed the class and learned a lot he cares about his students. Attendance isn't particularly mandatory but a lot of stuff from test come from lecture. I would buy both books. Our kids was a tough book for me I used online summaries to guide me. His study guides are very clear and if you are focused I think you'll pass with an A.
Sociology with Castro is very straightforward. Everything is stated from the beginning and you know what to expect. He is kind and respectful to his students and his lectures teach exactly what is on his tests. I would definitely recommend him for sociology!
I really enjoyed Carlos as a teacher. I did happen to stuggle with his accent a lot as he would pronounce things veyr odd. I do wish he was a little more personable, though. Goes kinda fast on lectures but overall a really nice guy. Grades pretty harsh if you ask me. Final grade should be a B+/ B.
I loved this class! Fantastic professor too! Small group assignments on the daily, but they're pretty easy. MAKE SURE YOU READ THE BOOKS. If not, it's extremely hard to understand what he is talking about. I recommend that you start the Our Kids assignments immediately. He gives you lots of time, but the deadlines sneak up on you REALLY fast.
Great professor! Really nice guy who cracks a funny joke here and there to keep the lectures funny. Just read the book and take notes in class and you will get an a. The test were fairly easy.
Castro made this daily class much more enjoyable. He cares about his students and loves to hear students discuss their take on sociological theories. The only downfalls of this class are the book, Our Kids, and the daily group discussions. Write the papers, do the group work, take the tests and you will be golden.
Mr. Castro is a professional mannered teacher that puts in work and time into his lectures. This class is not too hard as he specifies on the first day. There are 5 tests, 35 questions each, every other Friday. The book "Our Kids" is assigned and there are only 2 assignments you have to do for it and they are pretty easy. No final or mid term.
I loved this class, he was very lenient with grading, you would literally have to not do any of the homework and group assignments to fail this class. He made it easy and non-stressful. He is a super nice person and I loved his informative lectures alot.
I thought Castro was really good. His study guides clearly outlined the tests. It's not required to take notes from the textbook, but I did, which made the study guides easy. In-class lectures contained info that could be on the test, but attendance isn't required. Tests and group projects on Friday's.
Honestly? Castro is such a sweetheart. He cares about his students, posting lecture outlines and study guides on Canvas before. He outlines his class in such a way that follows the textbook, but allows more indepth information in class. He's willing to help, a lenient grader as long as the desire to do well is there.
Easy class and Carlos makes his lectures interesting. You have a quiz every other Friday and group assignments on the other fridays. You can skip class a lot during the week and still do well in this class. Definitely recommend.
He is amazing overall. 5 quizzes, drops the lowest. Group discussions, drops the lowest. The lectures are dry but he explains everything perfectly.
Amazing professor. I took his Hybrid class and it was super easy to get an A. You will have discussion every week but those are easy. 5 exams and drop the lowest score, 1 written assignment, and doesn't have final exam. He allows one 3"*5" note for each exam. Take note carefully and you will get an A.
Carlos is a great instructor and clearly wants everyone to get a high grade in his class. I loved his lectures/workshop everyday in class. I took SOC 101 and it was not hard; tests were moderately easy and all the in class assignments were common knowledge. If you are looking for a nice and easy 5 credit class this is the class for you.
Was a good teacher was really glad that we got to use a notcard for the tests. Five tests and three in class assignments lowest one dropped. Exam is optional but overall great class and his sense of humor is pretty great.
Professor Castro was mostly fine, the only problem was the way he conveyed information and his tests. The tests were not particularly hard, but the problem was that there weren't very many questions on the test, so merely by missing a few would your grade take a pretty significant hit. He was a little hard to follow, but the class was pretty easy.
Super easy class. 5 cr class with workload of a 1 cr class. 5 exams (35 Q) every other week (Scantron). 1 discussion post a week. Final is 3 pg. essay based on a topic from the textbook. Lots of extra credit and usually lets you out early. Lecture is usually just explaining a few concepts and discussing next exam. 3 x 5 notecard allowed for exams.
Castro is one of the funniest guys, and he is very good at teaching. There are quite a few notes to take in class, but the classes every day aren't boring at all. I highly recommend taking this class!
Castro is really sweet and you can tell he wants all his students to succeed. Not a very hard class; if you pay attention during lectures and at least skim the chapters before exams you'll be solid. In-class assignments are open book. He is patient when students don't understand and ask questions. He seems passionate about sociology. I recommend!!
This class was so easy. Like honestly ridiculously easy, if you attend class 3 times a week and have common sense you will pass this class
Dr Castro is an amazing professor! Very informative and explains things in a very applicable way. Gives 5 tests that are multiple choice and are easy if you do the reading. Allows a notecard for all tests so thats helpful. Definitely recommend!!
He is a very nice guy that really cares about his students and works with them on getting the best grade possible. He does a lot of group works and gives little to no homework. You can also use a note card on all of his tests.
Easy sociology class. Six quizzes, and he drops the lowest one, and you can bring in a notecard in, so easy A on the quizzes. One research paper, super short and easy. Get the text book because you will need the definitions to put on your notecard. As long as you make a good notecard for the quiz, you will pass. Great teacher with great lectures.
carlos was amazing. a typical class would basically be him talking about a powerpoint for half the class and the other half would be a group exercise. attendance on fridays is important but if you have to miss it for whatever reason, he is willing to let you do the assignments and email them to him. gives extra credit points for attendance
Super easy class, tests every other week- lets you use a notecard and give a study for everything on the test. Online discussions every week, grades quickly. No final, unless you missed/didnt get a grade on an earlier test hell drop a bad test and replace it with the one during finals week.
This class is pretty easy, a test every other week and you can use a notecard. The tests are pretty easy to get an A on as long as you come to class and take notes or takes pictures of the powerpoint. Castro is an amazing teacher.
He was very nice and seems smart, not a tough grader, the class is an easy A. Wouldn't take it if sociology is your major or if you actually want to remember what you learned; I mostly taught myself from the book. His accent isn't hard to understand but the lectures are boring. Take him if you're like me and just need the credit to get by.
I took Carlos Castros Race and Ethnicity class this last winter quarter and he is the best professor youll ever have at Clark!
Carlos was a very good professor. He would give a 30-35 minute lecture, and the last 15 minutes you would do a group assignment and turn it for no credit, he just wants to see your ideas. Every other Friday you have a test, and on the non-test days, you have a graded group assignment where you can get answers straight out of the book.
Castro's "sociology of the family" class was okay. Not hard to get a good grade but was not a fan of most of the content. You MUST read the textbook each week and there are group projects done in class every day. Castro is very laid back and not intimidating at all. There are three tests total and he does allow you to use a note card.
Very kind and funny teacher, I loved his class. Reading is a little heavy (abt 30pg a week) but if you like the content it will go by fast. Test every other Friday (with notecard), other Fridays are group assignments for credit. He gives written group exercises almost every day to see your thoughts; these will be counted as extra credit. Take him.
Carlos was an awesome professor. Make sure you use his lecture slides for your notecard, and you'll be good to go. Attendance isn't mandatory, however, it is recommended you go because of the in-class assignments and he sometimes pushed tests backed. He cares about his students and was generally a pretty easy A. The discussions are easy too.
He has a set schedule. There is one chapter a week with a chapter test every other week on two chapters. Im total there are 6 tests and he lets you wave the lowest score. Hes really nice and even after being in his class I see him around the school and hes still friendly and nice
Prof Castro was awesome! He gives about two assignments a week, an inquisitive and one discussion post. He lays out what is expected pretty well, and gives us clues through out. Really good class!
Carlos was pretty good overall. He gives an assignment every Sunday, an inquisitive (you may have to purchase it if it doesn't come w/ the book) and a discussion post (sometimes detailed). We didn't do any quizzes or anything like that either. He was light on grading. Midterm and exam at end of qtr. are 35 pts. I didn't read and was fine.
Each week you had a inquizitive assignment and a video to watch with a discussion post, super doable. Probably spent about an hour each week in total.
The course load was very manageable, the teacher was fair and his instructions were clear, and the topic is incredibly intriguing. Unlike my Calculus teacher, Prof Castro was realistic and shortened the curriculum for the summer quarter. Easily my favorite class and professor throughout my experience at Clark so far.
Professor Castro has a very lenient grading criteria. You mainly read (a lot) in his class, with one mandatory discussion a week (you only have to reply to someone once). You're guaranteed 100% on quizzes if you put in the time. The midterm and final are essay-like, with multiple questions that need to be answered in 5-7 sentences.
This professor really cares about student success, using a site called Inquizitive for weekly quizzes; if you work for a 100%, you will get 100% garunteed. This class has simple reading each week along with a quiz and a duscussion form, clear grading criteria attached. Assignmentd are graded in a timley manner.
You need to take this class. It is extremely easy, but at the same time, it is very informational. The assignments are easy and the tests are not very difficult. If you wanted to, (I don't recommend), not show up for any class, you could read the online homework and get an A. great class
Fantastic professor makes class so easy and enjoyable. He incredibly good man. Inspiring to see another Latino rise the ranks. Teacher of the year.
This class was pretty easy overall, we would have one discussion and one inquisitive a week. I never had an issue with the work, however, if you're in his in-person class, I found that he doesn't articulate his lectures well and is all over the place. If you dont go to class he will doc you at the end of the term and it took me down from a 90 to 86
Castro is a very nice guy, and accessible outside class. Aside from a weekly in-person lecture, there are only 1-2 assignments per week and they're super easy. SOC131 meets a lot of requirements for the AA and would definitely recommend taking it with Castro if you can. Lectures are pretty dull, unfortunately.
2nd time taking Prof. Castro and I will continue to take him for all my required classes he teaches. Prof. Casto is an understanding, compassionate, very smart and effective instructor; certainally my favorite so far. I have an incredible amount of respect for him. Inquizitive is used for this class, weekly discussions and clear grading criteria.
He was great! There is one discussion and one inquisitive a week. Inquisitive is like a game you can play till you get 100%. I would be very detailed on the discussions and answer every question asked. I got marked down a few times on mine. You get a grade on attendance so go to class. I would say overall great professor and interesting class!
I took Professor Castro's class fully online and it was pretty easy. He makes it clear what needs to get done, but it's really just working through Inquisitive and class discussions for the majority of assignments. Only takes an hour or two each week to complete. Highly recommend!!
Carlos was nice. Only had 1 quiz and 1 discussion per week so the class was low maintenance. I took this class in person and the lectures were about 45 mins and we had some great group discussions. My only issue was that I was out of town one day and he never answered my email or in person questions about makeups and it was a big part of my grade.
Pretty easy workload. One chapter of reading a week with a quiz and discussion. As long as you understand the theories in this class, the rest of the class is fairly easy. There is group work after each lecture, but none of it is graded. It is strictly so you understand the concepts mentioned. Overall great professor and easy class.
This class was very easy, each week we read a chapter, did an inquizitive, and a discussion. For a midterm we did 5 short-answer questions, very easy. And the final was again 5 short-answer questions, like 5 discussion posts. For both he gave like two weeks to finish which was cool, and very considerate. I highly recommend this class! 10/10!
Reading each week with the discussion board per usual, is not difficult at all. The final exam and Term are 5 short essay questions that are similar to the ones he asks on discussion boards just extra input. Has a clear grading rubric and is clear in his feedback, this class was NOT hard and I found the content very interesting.
Carlos is great! Great guy and an awesome teacher. Very easy class, just a discussion post with one reply and an inquizitive each week. I learned a lot and had no issues passing. Just be respectful in discussions and you'll be just fine! Easy A
This class has a really light workload. Only 2 assignments per week (InQuizitive and discussion post), the midterm, and the final exam. The topics covered are really simple and the exams weren't difficult. There's an online textbook but I barely used it, the videos provided are enough. Really nice professor, pretty simple class!
Carlos was one of my favorite professors. We have a discussion post each week and need to read chapters from our textbook which doesn't take much time. Sometimes we need to analyze docmentaries which can be time consuming but other than that everything is pretty manageable. For discussions other posts are available to view before posting.
Carlos' SOC101 class is a breeze. Weekly readings, quizzes, and discussions make up the workload. While his lectures can be unstructured, the content is engaging. Unstuck ai helped me ace the exams. Recommended for an easy A!
Just a chapter, inquisitive, and discussion every week. He was very clear with instructions. No complaints.
I would say this class is pretty easy while also interesting. Each week there is a discussion post with replies and an inquisitive. Not much to the class but still interesting.
Professor Castro was okay. I found it difficult to stay engaged as his lectures are kind of boring. If I took him again I'd do it online, it sometimes felt like a waste of time to go to class. One thing I didn't like was his feedback, which was minimal and not helpful. But overall, this class was doable and topics could be interesting.
Good teacher overall. Only an InQuizitive and a discussion post/reply every week due on Sundays. He gave good feedback and an easy workload
Professor Castro is great. Very manageable workload, easy for me (one discussion, one IQ, one assignment most weeks). Just make sure to participate in discussions each week and give thoughtful discussion with others. Castro is kind. Midterm was so doable. Just put in the effort. I recommend him.
Quizzes once a week based on completion with a textbook attached to them. Discussions once a week with clear instructions.
