I did not like him, he would be mad at you if you were 10 minutes late. He said that if we worked we should tell our supervisors to leave earlier for his class. He is ridiculous and he does not teach well. His tests are not hard but are timed, you have 1 hr to do them. I do not recommend him.
Not only did Fernandez bore us to death, he didn't really teach what was on the test. He would teach the easy stuff like we were babies and then not explain the hard stuff that would be on the test. Do not take Fernandez, if you can help it.
old school---speaks very "softly" tries hard to relate to the students--gives take-home quizes that could substitute for lowest exam score...Great TEACHER, WARNING: ...have some expresso before the lecture; Chem lab--OKAY---great intro classes!
Knows what he's teaching. Pretty easy, but you do have to pay attention. Makes chemistry interesting.
To tell u the truth I don't know how I passed his class...i guess laughing at his jokes helps your grade...Very Very nice professor...he gives u take home quizzes but he doesn't go over the math problems as much as he should to help you understand the tests.
wonderful professor! if you are looking for a roller coaster ride take him. he is very helpful and the test are not that hard if you study for them! study partners are helpful and taking the lab and lecture togther helps
I took professor Fernandez @ Nova Southeastern. He's a wonderful professor who provides as much attention as you need to pass his class. Understand & Caring! If he taught Organic II this semester I would have signed up in a second. Great Guy!
A great professor! Chemistry is not my thing, but he made it very fun to be in his class. He kept joking and keeping the enviroment light. YOU have to study for the test, and do ALL the homework for the class. If you attend his class, and you are motivated to do well you will get an A. Again WONDERFUL professor.
Great professor! I took him for Organic 1. He made the material easy to understand. Great in lab also! I still had to study and memorize, but he's very nice and understanding.
Great professor! I took him for the class and lab and both were great with him. He gives good examples and you can understand him clearly. If you have any trouble he won't give you an answer directly. What he expects from you is to try and figure it out step by step and at most gives you hints here and there... best way to learn I think. His tests
Test fairly, and never has problem with explaining things over again.
Teacher is tough. Requires a lot of work on students end. Homeworks mandatory b/c you will get a low grade on one of his tests and his tests have tricky questions. He does say jokes and tries to keep his students interested but i found myself lost and learning from fellow students more than from him. Changed his mind about a test 2 classes before!!
HORRIBLE TEACHER!!! he even said it "i explain everything once i don't repeat myself" you think i teacher should say that? he doesn't even answer questions we ask him, he say's we should ask out classmates. i dont recommend him at all!! worst teacher ever i had in that campus!!!
I took him for CHM1046 and CHM2210. He's a good professor and explains things well. Homework is not mandatory but it does replace one of your lowest test grades and DONT miss class because you will be lost if you do. His grading scale is curved the test are hard but it IS chemistry.. Just stay focused, study and you'll get a good grade.
Great professor....
he does know anything about organic chemistry this guy does not get you ready for the mcat or the pcat
I got an A with this guy, but in all honesty. I would never take him again nor would I recommend to anyone I consider a friend. Picky for every little thing and many people said that Gen Chem is his forte...because he's horrible at teaching Organic and will never answer any questions you have. Will just tell you to ask your classmates
Is there a more popular chem professor than Fernandez at MDC? If you dream of discovering the cure for B-Cell Lymphoma or winning the Nobel for synthing cyclomethane, take someone else. He's a professor for the masses. Pay attention in lecture, do all of the homework and practice problems and you will score well. Very, very affable guy, btw.
BEST PROFESSOR EVER I HATE CHEM AND THE WAY HE TEACHES i LOVE IT. HE CARES ABOUT THE STUDENTS
Excellent professor. Highly recommended.
Horrible teaching skills.. ^ seriosuly run away while you can
All I can say: DON'T TAKE HIM!! He takes off points for every little thing. I don't recommended to anybody
I don't remember learning one thing from this guy. and in lab it was miserable, it was like he was out to get me. its very imp to have a good professor for orgo and this guy is not it. if u asked a ? he would ask u what u thought? obviously if am asking u its because idk, i mean come on. he's a joke.
Very helpful prof. his accent is a little hard to understand but he is GREAT! especially explaining something you dont understand I would recommend him to anyone :)
I like the way he teaches and i would very highly recommend him
Received an A. Wonderful teacher. Very little use of the english language, but we are in the lab. I highly recommend this professor.
I had him for both the lecture and the lab. His lecture is all powerpoint but follows the material on the book. So the book IS YOUR BEST FRIEND. However, if you do your homework, he replaces your lowest test score with it and gives a mini review for every test and lots of practice problem. His lab is a nightmare so be prepared lol. Great Professor!
He is very knowledgeable of his subject and his standards are not low; you will learn with him since he is also very helpful and approachable. He made me appreciate Chemistry. For anyone who will need a strong foundation on the basics of Chem. he is the prof. to get. Drops your lowest score on tests and in-class quizzes.
Excellent professor. Really cares about his students. You will learn a lot, but you have to study.
AAA+ EXCELLENT PROFESSOR REALLY CARE ABOUT HIS STUDENTS.TAKE HIM YOU WILL NOT REGRET
I took last semester 1046 an d just finished 0rganic 1. he is super easy, of course you need to study but his exams are not tricky. I would take him again for organic 2
Don't recommend. Class grade is determined by tests only, drops the lowest. Gives practice questions that are misleadingly easy compared to test. Teaches by textbook PowerPoints, but doesn't even test out of the book..gets test bank questions off the Internet. He also won't email slides. Tests aren't scheduled, just when chapter is done.
You have to study by the book. He does not teach anything in class. Exams are easy if you study the book by yourself.
I took 1045,1045l ,1046lab and lecture 0rg 1 A´s but you need to study by yourself.
Very helpful professor! Took CHM1033L and passed with an A. Of course, as with any course, you MUST study!!!! Really cares about helping his students.
This Professor is awesome! He teaches very well & will definitely answer any question you may have. I can definitely see myself taking him again! His exams are easy if you pay attention, go to class & do your hw like any other class! Take him! You won't regret it! :)
This prof. is amazing! His lectures are good, he just wants you to pass & to learn! He's very nice & will answer any question you have! He's awesome! I would definitely take him again! :)
He is a great professor, he cares about his students and wants everyone to pass, yes, as people have already pointed out, he doesn't know English very well but aside from that he teaches the subject very well, it is not impossible to understand him, he knows his stuff and he will help you out even during exams! he is a very caring person!
I recommend him even though some students do not like him. But he is really good. His test are not easy at all, but if you study and do the exercises in the study sheet that he gives you; you should not have problems to get an A on this class. He also gives you a lot of extra-credit for every test.
Great professor. He is always helpful and makes sure that the student understands the assigned exercise.
Decent professor. Just study the lab and the concept of the lab your doing that day and you will get an A. Now if you don't read your manual and don't study. You have great difficulty. He doesn't grade you tough at all.
This teacher is horrible. Does not teach a thing. Expects too much from students. Talks about anything but chemistry. When the test come if you do not study on your own from the book you will not pass. This class is a waist of money and time. Unless you are a Chemistry genius do not take him. He doesn't answer questions either! Horrible.
He doesn't know English very well, but overall hes probably the best chem lab teacher ever, nothing is hard and he will HELP YOU OUT DURING THE TEST!!! I had him and Tarafa for lecture and I learned all the chm1025 things from him and not her. Consider him as a tutor really so hes perfect! Taking him for CHM1045L
Class starts by him saying a story, which lasts about 10 minutes and makes you want to fall asleep. The study guide for the test is given 1 day before so its useless. The lectures are boring and he speaks in a monotone voice. He also answers his own questions. I don't recommend to take him. He makes things complicated and is not very helpful.
Just buy the book and find the test bank online it will get you an A in this class. Good luck teaching this to yourself!!
He is a decent teacher and also very helpful. The only con that I would have to say is that he has a very strong accent and it is hard to understand him sometimes.
Took the 1033 Lab. The professor is interested in helping students understand Chemistry. Has been a chemist for over 30 years and is second nature to him. However you must study the modules of lab book. Makes lab fun and explains things simple. He does have a strong accent so pay attention. He is very approachable even if you only speak english.
worst professor, please do not take him!!!
Take him. His very helpful even when taking a test. He wants for you to pass. He explains really good and knows exactly what his talking about.
This professor was really clear of what he wanted. He gives extra credit in every test and there is also PLTL sessions that count for extra credits. If you study for his test you will pass with no problem.
Be prepare to study by yourself. He speaks of any topic, but not the class.
Oh boy! This professor doesn't teach a thing!!! I cannot stand seating in his class: he just waist your time. I love chemistry, but this guy makes it so boring, so complicated, and so confusing. Do not take him! If you do, be ready to study on you own from YouTube and a book.
If you study by yourself youll do fine. Talks about anything but chemistry during class.
Professor Fernandez is pretty good, not an easy A, but extremely helpful and he does want all students to succeed. He does have an accent but he does explain the subjects clearly. There were no quizzes or mid-term, only work assignments and a final exam.
He knows the material, but doesn't explain much. Lectures are very theoretical. He would review few practice exercises in class and will expect from you to figure out the rest in your own because to the test goes EVERYTHING. Could give a 5 pts extra credit question on the test or give none, impossible to figure out the pattern. No multchoice tests.
If you are engaged and trying, he will pass you. He wants everyone to pass. He knows the material and is willing to assist beyond the assignments
He explain the logic of the things that is why you need to know "WHY"?? in the questions he ask, he is a really good professor. I love the way he teaches. Take him and you will learn without stress. You will enjoy her lecture. Good mentor and good professor.
He is an amazing chemistry teacher.
excellent professor
He is really just great. He does expect participation and a little of self learning but he provides an environment for you to grow and learn. He is really helpful to the students and often offers his spare time to help. Gives extracredit . Really the best professor for chem so far.
Professor, Fernadez's class is quite an easy A. You go to class, he goes over the procedure of the lab, you do the lab with a partner, and you leave class as soon as you're finished. He gives 3 exams throughout the course, but he gives a review the class before. He has an accent which is hard to understand, however he's still a good professor.
This teacher is awesome. I had him for chm1045 and chm1046 and he is such an exellent person. He gives very helpful advices and I am glad to have been his student for the last two semesters. Best, R. N.
Well, he is a good professor. You have to read each chapter and attent to class... This is an introductory chemistry so be ready. what else? he gave 3 tests and final. He likes to talk a lot and tries to wake up our curiosity in this subject. I would take him again because now I know his way to grade and those stuff. Good luck!
Took him for Summer Term because I had to. This professor was very rude. Tests are hard and he makes you work for the grade. I went to ask him for help and he responded by telling me I wasn't good enough to pursue a degree in STEM.
Decent professor. His lectures tend to get a bit boring, but he gives you the information you need to pass. He also gives a practice problems and offers extra credit. Don't visit his office hours he tends to be very rude and blunt in his office. All his exams are free response but he gives you credit if you write something that makes sense.
Run away from him He was rude
Runnnnnnnn awayyyyyyyyy from himmm
This is the most rude professor I've Ever met In his office hours he use to be very disrespectful
Run!!!!!!!!!
Rude!!!!!!!!
Good professor, he wants you to think out of the box. He makes you study and get closer to the material. He wants you to learn and dont be lazy.
bad professor, he does not know how to teach at all, he is very arrogant and does not care about his students. very boring and talks about anything but chemistry. I do not reccommend him at all.
He is an amazing professor that has a clear grading criteria, and that will teach you more than chemistry. He will teach you about life as well, and how chemistry is related to everything.
One of the best Chemistry professors I have encountered in my path as a student. He knows his stuff, and makes sure you learn why things happen the way they happen.
Wasnt the best but helped in the end of the semester. A but confusing at times with high standards, rash comments at times.
I had to teach myself Chemistry. His lectures don't teach you anything. If you've taken ap Chem in high school and truly know chem then u can take him if not I wouldn't recommend him to anyone. He doesn't know how to teach chemistry you are better off with any other chem profesor. Also we had 8 tests and he doesn't drop the lowest grade.
horrible professor, don't recommend taking him. Does not teach and goes off topic constantly
Flat out terrible. The worst decision of my life was choosing him as my professor. Going into CHM1046, i can safely say that i learned nothing during my semester with him.
Just study his power points. No need to take notes on what he says because it will never be part of your test.
He is a good teacher
Reviews are pretty straight forward. I knew this professor was bad but I had to take him anyways (schedule, work.) I had no choice. I had a 4.0 and got my first B. Didn't learn anything and his classes were awful. My advice: don't take him, try to find another professor. Another campus etc. If you have no choice and have to take him... good luck.
Gives 4 tests and a final. Does not send reviews, sends outlines instead which are no help. Gets off topic a lot and does not know how to explain. Very tough grader. His exams are half multiple choice half written response. Takes a lot of points off if you do not explain your answer. Does not help you at all. Very unfair grader. Avoid him!!!
I must admit that he has a thick accent and is sometimes hard to understand but if you really want to pass your Chemistry lab classes, take him. All we had were lab reports and 1 final . Make sure you do all of your lab reports to get an A on them and study for the final which he will give a review on. You won't regret taking him for lab :)
He tells you life stories and teaches out of powerpoints. Offers extra credit if there is participation outside of class time on poster boards. Not the best teacher, I would avoid. No review. Rather see you more often outside of class.
Apparently friendly, but very unhelpful. He doesnt answer many questions. He grades lab notebooks ridiculously. I lost a full letter grade because i didnt put my signature at the end of each lab and didnt write module numbers.. thats not science; thats him being a stickler. His lab tests are easy. Quizzes before every lab (read lab questions)
I took this class over the summer and it was so much confusion because of his heavy accent and he is nor clear about the topics he talks about. So, you'll be pretty confuse in this class and he even gets mad if you made a mistake. Very impatient. It's up to you if you want to take it or have no choice.
I love him as a professor it's just tough because I would wish he'd give reviews or some kind of inclination of what will be on tests instead of just saying its on chapter 3. I enjoy his lectures cause he goes off topic into his life but he ties it into what he is explaining and that makes me personally learn better. No HW/ 4 tests/ EC on a poster.
I dont know why this professor has such bad ratings, he is super nice and always willing to help. Gives extra points on tests, and visit his office hours! A fun project for extra credit too at the end.
If you have not taken a Chemistry course before do not even think about taking Fernandez. You will be paying for a class in which you will have to teach yourself. The professor uses class time to talk about everything but the lecture corresponding. The tests are tough and very specific. Worst experience ever.
Test are crazy hard even if you study. Theres no extra credit available so you get what you get. Many people here like his way of teaching , but i dont. Fernandez goes out of topic many times during lecture and makes you loose concentration on the topic. I speak Spanish but he is constantly talking about Margarita idk who she is.
When asking questions professor would respond with, "I don't know." After reviewing questions with him as a group, he provided us with answers, and then when grading the assignment told us they were wrong. When prompted for further explanation, he had none. Locks the door if you are late, so you are unable to participate. Didn't learn a thing.
This was the hardest class I have ever taken in all my courses. He is extremely picky when grading tests and they are NOT multiple choice. He gives you worksheets to "help" you study for the exams, but they aren't remotely close to the exam problems. He goes over the worksheet problems in class that he never taught and gets mad that we don't do it.
Due to the COVID-19 pandemic, the class has restarted as remote learning. However, the professor cannot manage online classes. Also, he is impatient with his students. His tests are straightforward.
His class is 100% nonstop lecture. He is funny and you can tell he cares about students. If you have him, visit him in office hours and create a relationship with him so he knows you. Tests are challenging, if its multiple choice you wont get full credit unless you explain your answer on the side. Also, tests are 1hr, afterwards theres lecture.
Worst chem professor I've ever had. He gives out reviews but they are nowhere close to the exam (don't expect them to be the same either). He can be unnecessarily rude sometimes. Doesn't drop any of the exams to try to help you. He expects you to know everything even when reviewing. Don't take him.
WORST PROFESSOR EVER. HE DOESN'T KNOW HOW TO GIVE A LECTURE. HE IS ALWAYS ALL OVER THE PLACE. I HAD TO STUDY BY MY OWN BECAUSE HE NEVER EXPLAINS ANYTHING!! AVOID HIM IF YOU CAN. I DIDN'T LEARN ANYTHING. HE USES THE PP SLIDES TO EXPLAIN, BUT AFTER READING THE FIRST WORDS, HE STARTS TALKING ABOUT HIS LIFE, MARGARITA AND RIDICULOUS EXAMPLES.
If you struggle in chemistry, Just run the other way! He is not the Professor for you! He reads straight off the PPT, 4 exams 1 final, no hw, also aside from doing the problems on the exam you have to give an explanation as to why even if it self explanatory. Hes a very nice person and he really does try!
He is a nice person and he tries to explain the PowerPoints, but he goes out of topic. You have to study all by yourself to pass the test. Read the book and do the exercises. He lets you use your notes. Be ready to explain every answer in the test. There are just 4 exams and 1 final. It is an easy class if you study hard by yourself.
the worst chem professor I ever have in my entire life as science student . this guy put always 17 questions in 1 hour and 10 min. He speaks a lot and send the exam always 5 min later of the time you're supposed to start . Also takes points off if you drop off the exam minutes later . he make u to explain every single question, even calculations
Professor Fernández is a nice Professor. To get an A in your tests, you will need to read the book by yourself. Exams are similar to the exercises he gives for every chapter. In class he only reads the powerpoints, but it is fine if you study hard. Be ready to explain every answer on the exam to get full credit. Loved the class.
He's a tough grader and takes off points for significant figures on exams/if you didn't do the steps exactly as he did. The content on the tests was very similar to the problems in the book, so it wasn't hard if you studied. His lectures were only ok, but he did try. He is difficult to understand due to his accent and fast pace. Only 3 exams.
Exams are based on the pp and the exercises he gives you. Be ready to explain ever question in the test. If you study hard and practice as many exercises as you can, you will get an A in the class. 4 exams and 1 final.
This class has absolutely NO homework. The grades are based on just a few tests. He lectures alll class which is honestly so boring but sometimes is helpful.
This is one of those classes where it feels like you're working against your professor. Not only must you struggle to finish your exams, which is entirely what your grade is based on, in 70 minutes, you also have to show work AND write out (in words) the strategy you used. I was 2 exams in when I realized he was removing dozens of points for that.
He has an accent and gives unclear instructions that takes time for you to get used to. Ask a lot of questions in the first class and you will have a general idea of the entire course. He goes over the labs in detail and does thorough review on 3 lab tests. He is very knowledgeable in chemistry and is very chill.
Amazing teaching skills and made a hard subject as chemistry very easy to understand. Gives good reviews before every test about the content for the exams. Explains the lab and the class content very detailed and help you if there is something yo did not understand.
Try to find another prof. His accent is pretty difficult to understand and you feel like you're fighting against him every lab. Everyone is pretty much lost the entire time. The only thing is that his exams aren't difficult, and lab reports (only 4) are pretty easy. He isn't a tough grader, but one lab is worth around half your grade, yikes :(
you do a lab weekly, they arent hard but you do have a bit of work. not a hard class if you just listen
weekly lab, but he explains or does a demo before each experiment to make sure students understand. he prepares you for the final and is very accessible outside of class. be sure to turn in any late work asap!! incredibly kind and understanding.
Don't take classes with him.He will explain the experiment that will be done in class, but he will criticize you for opening the bottle a certain way. He likes to yell at you, especially when it comes to girls, even though you have given him respect. His accent is so strongly. There are no reviews for the exams.
Don't take classes with him.He will explain the experiment that will be done in class, but he will criticize you for opening the solution bottle a certain way. He likes to yell at you, especially when it comes to girls, even though you have given him respect. His accent is so strong. There are no reviews for the exams.
His behavior was extremely unprofessional, I already contacted both the Chair and the Dean. DO NOT TAKE THIS CLASS if you are visibly queer or a conventionally attractive girl. How do I not say that the professor shows bias if he targets these students and attacks them despite other students performing the same actions, he is prejudiced & angry.
i DO NOT agree with the other comments as a queer female. he was super helpful in class, you just have to get used to his way of working. his accent is super strong but if you need help he will do most experiments with you and give you the answers as he does it. if you need help before class he explains any questions you may have.
He has a strong accent but he is easy to get used to if u work with each other. No homework, only reports from experiments which he does with u and sometimes gives u the answer. and quizzes from the book.
The guy has a strong accent, but he is a chill teacher, and his assignments are relatively easy. You will have to carry some knowledge from the lecture portion of this course but besides that you will be fine. He is helpful with experiments and tries his best to help you understand.
His English is super hard to understand even for Spanish speakers. He doesn't teach in a way that's easy to understand at all. He also lowkey plays favorites with the girls. The only reason I passed is because I fluffed him up. He also didn't give us a paper he said he'd give us on the test, so the class asked for it mid-test (half of us failed)
Professor Fernandez has a specific teaching style, but engaging with it pays off. The labs can be a bit of work, but his detailed demos and exam reviews make it manageable. Unstuck ai was a lifesaver for my study prep.
He's very difficult to understand and is a picky grader. Take Ramos
He is unqualified to teach. Has an accent that is entirely not understandable. If you are an access student make sure that he understands where and how you take exams. He says that it is impossible to give extra credit. Tests are super hard and you have to write for every answer and each part. Even if you need it for credits never choose his class.
I love Carlos. if you read the material before class, you will do great. We have a short quiz (2–5 quest) at the start of every class, based on the pre-lab. He doesn't use Canvas,he emails the schedule. Grades come from quizzes, reports, and three exams. He's funny, kind, and even gave me goggles twice when I forgot mine. would take him again 1000%.
Professor Fernandez is amazing! He explains everything so well and does good test reviews before every test that will help you in your lecture also! I would 100% take him again grade is mostly lab & 3 test
Super nice professor, I will say though that it's very important that you are paying attention in class because he will do a prelab quiz before his lecture and then for homework you will be required to a lab report of the lecture. Everything is pencil and paper though none of it will be on Canvas/online including your grade.
