He makes these classes incredibly hard. If you can avoid it, take it a year later so there is a better chance that another professor will be teaching it.
Excellent teacher, very friendly and approachable, fair grader, recommend
Worst math teacher ever! Stay away from him... He is unclear and is not very good with English. CLAS was very helpful though. Not too hard of a grader though, but just hope you understand it.
stay away! gave 1 a-,2 b+,2b,1 b-, 3c+ and 32 c's d's and f's

Better at confusing students than helping. DO NOT TAKE!!!!
I still don't know what to think. I did well, but had no idea I would because our midterm was completely ridiculous.
he tried really hard to go easy on the grading. he ended up curving the class and dropping the midterm grade for those who did well on the final. i got a 75 on the midterm and ended up with an a-. his lectures were really hard to follow and i relied wholly on clas, but it wasn't the worst experience of my life.
I've had 3 math classes prior to taking this (Got all A's), and this professor is by far the most incomprehensible one I've had yet, for any subject. The textbook is also terrible, thank god my TA was good. His lectures are very abstract. I passed this class without having felt like I truly grasped the content.
This professor is imposible to follow in class. I never learned anything from him. The TA was the most helpful and was the reason I got through the course. I felt that he would have done a better job of teaching the course. Also, there were problems on the exams that we had never covered. When the class protested, he didn't care.
Not a bad teacher, but not a good one. Tends to speak over your head most of the time and thrives on abstract explanation. Considering 3C is my first math class with any abstract thought, it was a bit of a struggle. But his presentations are rigid and structured, so if you work hard and use the TAs, you won't die.
His lectures do not prepare you for the test. I recommend that students attend CLAS instead.
His lectures and notes are completely useless. Many students stopped showing up to class and went to CLAS instead. Every quarter, he has a midterm with one question in which he gives most people a zero.
ONE question in the midterm = 0 pts for most of students a LOT of hw nd his lecture notes are helpless for either HW or TEST No curve either. Can't understan d professors that gives theorical based question including proving(it was 1/3 of the midterm grade...) I would take a quarter off of math nd take it with another professor if i had the chance
All around horrible professor. Lectures were unclear and impossible to follow, the HW was often redundant, and the tests were just poor. Most likely aware of his obvious shortcomings, he did institute a ridiculous curve, with 50% being a C-, and HW counting for 40% of your grade. You'll pass, but will have trouble grasping the concepts.
Garcia's lectures were utterly useless. I went to about 3 or 4 of them total. Do CLAS with Calvin Kao (if he's still doing it) - he got me an A in the class. Tests are hard, be prepared to know conceptual stuff beyond the scope of the homework. Good curve though and 40% homework grade. Some homeworks were long but expedited with Mathematica/Maple.
Lecture was boring. His explanations were too conceptual. CLAS helped me get through this class. HW is long and redundant, but it's well worth it since it's 40% of your grade.
Terrible. Everything that the 5A students said about him is completely true, except that he doesn't have a curve for his ridiculously difficult, not homework related, unstandardized tests. I got 100% on the homework, 90% on the midterm, and ended up with a B- in the class because the final was impossible. DO NOT TAKE HIM. You will regret it.
By FAR the worst professor I ever had. It was impossible to understand him, there was no curve on his exam, and even my TA wasn't able to prepare me for the completely abstract and ridiculously hard final. Do NOT take him under any circumstances, wait for another professor.
I got a 67% on the midterm, a 55% on the final, a 100% on all of the homework (worth 40%)and got a B in the class. Garcia scales the class so that 60% is solid C. Instead of going to lecture, GO TO CALVIN KAO for CLAS...you wont regret it.
He is a nice person (he would help you as much as he can if you go to his office hour), but not a good professor. you won't ever understand his lecture at all. also, final is extremely hard.
This professor talks fast with a spanish accent and is hard to understand and comprehend in class. He is rude in lecture but I guess he is nice if you talk to him personally. The mid term was simple and the final was very hard. Thanks Garcia-Cervera for my only C in college!
He is incapable of teaching. I was not able to understand what he was talking about. I learned nothing in his CCS vector calculous class. I will go out of my way never to take a class from him again. It was a complete waste of effort.
Don't take any class with this professor at all costs. Average on the midterm was 26% and he did not curve. That should say enough.
While the average on the midterm was 26% (highest score a 50%), and while he did not curve the class, he offered nine easy quizzes worth 2% of the total grade each, plus a bonus question on the final worth 10-15% of the total class grade. Overall, quite fair. He is also extremely helpful if you talk to him during office hours or outside of class.
His class was straight from the book. He had to give us extra credit because he grades so hard (but he also grades the extra credit hard so beware). If your answer makes sense but is not his verbatim expect a zero. Although the class material is excrutiating I would never take this teacher for any other class.
To be fair, he is enthusiastic about helping students. Otherwise, I disagree over his fairness despite of the extra credit, and would extend to say he is completely disconnected from how well his class is doing. His HW is long, repetitive, and lacks variety. One-third of class didn't show up to his final. Only a masochist would take him for 118!
He is a hard prof but fair, the average on the midterm was low but he gave a bunch of opportunities to make it up, a lot of students stopped going after the midterm so they ended up with poor grades since they missed the quizzes, I ended up with an A because I stuck with it and took the quizzes. Just don't take him if you plan on not showing up.
I've had a bit of time to think about this class and it was simply unreasonable. Garcia hit below the belt by assigning material that was not covered in the book and by giving test problems on material he told us we did not need to worry about. He provided very little help in offices hours. Five engineering graduate students dropped this class.
I love mathematics but this man made me hate it. How can he get away with grading so dang hard? I got a 2 out of 30 points on the midterm when I thought I did okay. He gave me my first ever D in a math class in my whole math education. He created such a bad experience for me that I have never been able to let go of to this day. DO NOT TAKE HIM!
Everyone unfairly hates on Garcia. Garcia is nice and cares about the students. He just expects students to be more independent and work more from the book. Homework, midterms and finals are all reasonable, just students are being lazy. Take Garcia if you are a real student, not a slacker offer.
He can be hard to understand sometimes but just ask if you are ever confused. I am a native Spanish speaker and meet with him every week for help. I so far got 17/18 and a 18/18 on midterms and aced the final. People are just not working hard enough. You learn alot by going to discussion, but people say lectures are confusing but to me they are not
His exams were fairly easy, though he likes to put some trick questions. Problems from the book are the midterm and final. He also emphasizes theory over computation. Overall a good professor.
You almost have to learn another language with him. The course is difficult, but extremely doable. I hardly did any of the homework but if it weren't for stupid mistakes, I would have done much better. Go to office hours. His lectures are somewhat useful, but sometimes he skips too many steps.
He's passionate about teaching and will help you understand if you have a question during lecture or in office hours. Exams are easy if you understand the material, and you will if you go to lecture, he is wonderful at explaining. I'll take one of his classes again if I can!
Lectures are pointless: just a lot of rediculous proofs. kind of helpful in office hours. Tests are fair if you know what you are supposed to be learning, which isn't an easy thing to know. Got an A because of a LOT of studying and CLAS
He's a genuinely nice guy who really cares about his students, just not a great professor. He clearly knows what he's talking about, he just can't communicate it effectively. Midterms were easy, final was difficult but reasonable.
He teaches with a theoretical approach, which is what makes him hard to understand. He really knows the material and knows how to teach; I just wasn't used to his teaching style. Maybe he'd be better for UD classes. CLAS helps alot. Midterms & Final were manageable as long as you knew the material like the back of your hand. You can't slack off.
Carlos teaches a really hard class. Avoid him as a professor if possible. Took 118a from him. To do well on exams you need to know the definitions word for word. Also, you need to be able to prove any of the theorems from Rudin's text. The average on the midterm was 56% but he grades with no curve. Two thumbs down.
He has fair tests but is perhaps the toughest grader I have ever had. He is very helpful if you go into office hours and is willing to work with you to earn back points. But he is a very tough grader... so unless you are prepared to work your butt off, don't take it with him
He shows proofs more than actual math work.
35% midterm 60% final 5% homework midterm was 5 questions (each 10 points), gave out no partial credit many students dropped after midterms, the average was 55% but he doesn't curve. Overall, he is smart, but he obviously does not know how to teach.
Worst teacher I've had by far, if you miss class you will be fine because he doesn't teach a thing. Ive received straight A's my whole life almost never getting below a C on tests... I got a 38% on his midterm I thought I thought I did well on. Please do not take.
Easily the worst math teacher I have ever had. His lecturing ability is non-existent, his tests and homework are monotonous and very difficult. Homework only worth 5% of grade, rest is final and midterms which are very hard. I got an 800 on the math SAT and have always done well in math but failed his first midterm. Would avoid at all costs.
The worst professor ever. Absolutely no need to go to his lectures. I learned so much more from my CLAS tutor and TA. Can't understand anything he says. I've always been pretty good at math, and I failed his midterm. Avoid him at ALL COSTS. Do NOT take a class with him.
The worst math professor I have ever had. Lecture is useless and he does not curve. Avoid him at all cost. His midterm and homework are really difficult. The average of the midterm is 55%. I will never ever take a class with him.
Horrible... This teacher, if you could call him that, is the worst I have ever had. I am a hard worker and study often. He does not care about his students. I have gone into office hours and he has made me feel like an idiot because I couldn't understand a topic. Awful a disgrace to the University...
Lectures are completely irrelevant to tests & extremely long, fast, and confusing. His homework was hard & worth few points, but do-able (definitely helped me learn the material). Mostly learned the material on my own and through CLAS and TAs. Tests are really tough, but not totally impossible if you 100% master every topic (and are lucky)
Quite possibly the worst professor I've ever had. He told my class that he expects us to be better than him at math and gives no curve at all.
Wasn't here for the first 2 weeks. The sub we had before he came in was way better at explain things and actually gave us time to ask questions during lecture if we didn't understand something. When Garcia came back, you couldn't ask a question without him basically responding, "Are you stupid? You should know this." Would have gotten another prof.
Lectures are difficult to understand and examples usually are not complete or clear, so lectures are not very useful. Grading and difficulty level is very inconsistent. Taking a CLAS class along with this course is necessary.
This man should not be teaching.
Ridiculous as to how poorly this class was taught. Consistently jumped around in lecture. Did not follow the book nor help much with homework. Went to office hours even worse. I would bring back the Holocaust if it meant Carlos did not teach this class
Professor Garcia is very intelligent and undoubtedly shows a profound understanding of the material - but neither of the aforementioned traits are nearly as important as the ability to articulate concepts and methods in lecture, fairness (both in grading and making clear what is to be on the test), and a character even slightly above apathetic.
Worst professor on the face of the Earth. He is worth absolutely nothing and grades like a nazi. Shows absolutely no compassion towards any human being whatsoever. He is one of the rudest people I have ever met and without a doubt the worst professor I will ever encounter. If you have to drop out of college to avoid taking this class, do it.
If you're taking this class with Garcia, you MUST take CLAS. Lectures are no help at all, so if you miss a lecture (or all of them) it doesn't matter. The only way to do well on his exams are by doing many many many practice problems and by knowing the material like the back of your hand. Also, GO TO CLAS!!
Let's say math was your business in high school. All A's and no extra studying for tests. And then carlos comes into your life. understanding him is impossible and unless youre a math major you dont need to know the proofs and derivations of these formulas. Lectures are pointless. I'd rather have my limbs cut off than take his class ever again.
Possibly the worst option for a math professor, lectures are not helpful and do not prepare students for the final, outside help is a must
His class note makes me feel like I am in a english class. he is definitely the worst professor you will probably see in your life. if you have another choice, do not take his class. he is intelligent on the things he is teaching, but the problem is that he cant show you what he is talking about. gives questions from different levels in midterm.
This has got to be the most unclear professor ever! Everyone is lost during his lectures! If you have no choice to but to take him the only way to pass is by attending CLAS! Become your tutor's best friend!
I've never had a class so difficult, nothing on the tests were done in homework or lecture. He does not do examples or practice problems and does not answer questions in class.
I had so much confidence in myself when it came to math because I always got A's in high school. But he crushed it all when I received a BARELY passing grade of a C. He knows his stuff, but his expectations for students are WAY too high. For tests dont rely on how much you study rather pray that you have an easy grader. Some dont give partial cred
i did all the homework and i studied my ass off. I know i'm not good at math, but I've usually been able to do well just by giving it my best. The TA i had wasn't clear, and that was just a recipe for failure. Please do not take this class if this guy is the professor. A good professor will be concise, while this professor lacks any teaching skill
He is a terrible lecturer who goes off on mathematical tangents (heh, get it?) that are really irrelevant to what we are doing and unhelpful. He does lots of proofs and shows us how higher math solves problems when all we want to know is how to do calculus so we can get on with our majors that aren't math. 010 210 with rice.
He is a horrible teacher and I survived a B+ by not going to lecture and going to CLAS instead because those people that went to lecture say they got a significantly worst grade. He makes things very confusing and please save yourselves the trouble. I got nothing below an A and Carlos's grade was the lowest. I like math but not when he teaches.
He is 15 year music theory teacher, bass player from Columbia. His accent is the hardest challenge about his style of teaching. he has been teaching in the states for the past 3 years and the accent is here to stay. his accent makes him really think about what he is saying. Best thing is to let him talk and ask questions when he done talking!!!!!!!
This class should have been manageable, but thanks to him it was not. We spent an average of two all-nighters a week just trying to finish the homework. What he taught had nothing to do with the online notes and the homework was based on the online notes. By the 5th lecture, 5 people actually came to class. Take math from a different professor.

Literally the worst professor you could imagine. Barely speaks English, is impossible to understand, and does not help at all. TA's for 3B also don't help. His homework is ridiculous and good luck on the midterm on final. Avoid at all costs.
lectures are so confusing and he should not be teaching a lower level math class. He is obviously a genius with math but just can't teach this class well at all. The final was so difficult and he doesn't curve the class at all. I even took calculus in high school and knew most of what he taught but still got a b-.
This guy honestly was the worst teacher I've had in my life. He literally made the final to where the average was a D- and I went from an A all quarter to a B- just by getting a D on the final, which he did not curve. I got a 5 in AP calc AB, studied for 30 hours for the final and he made it so ridiculous.
Lectures weren't too confusing, but I would get lost sometimes and he wouldn't be very helpful in his explanations. What he taught and what he tested were completely different things. He would teach you and give you homework on problems with a difficulty of an 3-7 on a scale of 1-10 and on the final would through out a problem that was a 9.
if you see this guy teaching this class, avoid like the plague.
Worst professor I've ever had... I got a 5 on the AP calc test and this guy have midterm questions seem like graduate exams. Failed his class and have gotten straight A's so far in college... Plus side no need to go to class because he can't teach.
Took this class fall 2014 with him. Honestly, if you got a well-rounded grasp of calc in high school, his class isn't anything special. His final was somewhat tough, and midterm was easy. I stopped going to lecture after the midterm, so around week 4/5. CLAS is your best friend.
His lectures are thorough but I wouldn't take his course again. Homework is fair but the exams are quite difficult. Reading the text is critical, but it is tough to know what he will test you on as exam problems deviate significantly from those on the homework. He is helpful outside of class but his course is far from straightforward.
Okay, here's the thing with Prof Garcia-Cervera: he is a good person and is accessible in office hours, but his method of teaching is difficult to follow. It did not work for me and made it hard for me to learn. I tried to follow the textbook and learn by myself but it is quite difficult in such an important class like Math 8. His exams are fair.
It's hard to follow his lecture if you have not learnt the content before. Sometimes you feel like he's repeating the same problem over and over again, but sometimes you cannot understand what he is trying to say. I haven't attended a single lecture since midterm and learnt everything on my own; just learn the textbook and you'll be fine.
Lectures are hard to understand so I had to teach myself and go to CLAS. He really cares about his students, though. Moved the final online right away when the chancellor suspended in-person instruction due to coronavirus, later made it optional because we have too much to worry about. TLDR: nice person, but I'm not used to his teaching style.
Let's be honest: we all got lucky in professor Garcia-Cervera's math 4B in Winter 2020 due to the optional final because of the outbreak of coronavirus. He speaks fast, and calculates fasts that your brain cannot catch up with. If he posts notes on Cauchospace, do not waste your time taking them yourself. The textbook is more organized and helpful.
Nice guy. Tried really hard to make the class better. I can tell he tried.
Lectures are terrible, I haven't been to his lecture a second time since the second week. I understood he tried a lot to make lectures better, however ... hopefully he could make it better next quarter. The textbook is much more helpful, I read the book and took the homework, got an easy A+ with a 119.4 total score...
Pros: Easy homework; easy exams; lots of extra credits; the textbook was free online and explains stuff well; attendance was not mandatory; Cons: Unnecessarily hard lectures; the professor had thick accents which might be hard to follow; be prepared to pay the ridiculous price for Wiley Plus.
Dont know what all the fuss is about, this guy worked reeeeally hard to make sure we understood the material.
His lectures made absolutely no sense. He would present the material but would not connect the dots to make any logical sense. It was difficult to understand.
UD students!! Garcia is the man for 118 series! You know the higher level math profs always get a bad rep w LD. Professor Garcia is the best math professor I've had at UCSB. He provides so many resources, and works so hard to ensure we have what we need to succeed. His lectures are illuminating, and the work is hard (118 is hard) but achievable.
He is very hard to understand because of his accent, and his lectures are hard to follow. I stopped watching the lecture videos after week one but I did fine. I would not recommend taking his class, but everything including the tests and final was online so it is doable. Youre better off teaching yourself with the textbook.
Honestly just such a difficult professor, his lectures are long and hard to follow and he assigns a ton of homework which makes it hard to actually learn the course content, I recommend just teaching yourself on Khan Academy or avoiding at all cost
Lectures were async. Sometimes, the lectures were hard to follow, but in general, they were alright. There are a lot of recorded lectures coupled with a lot of webwork HW problems and a quiz each week. The professor was accomodating, delaying a midterm bc of a holiday. You might need to self study the material, if you find lectures unhelpful
Class was asynchronous, and it was the worst mistake I've ever made. Taking this class made me feel like I was taking a graduate level class. Go to CLAS because it is literally the only help you can get. If possible, avoid taking his class, because you WILL regret it. I cannot stress how difficult the homework is and how he overall can't teach.
online saved me and was the only reason i got an A. homework was really hard and his lectures were useless. he makes things way harder than it has to be. i didn't watch them and solely relied on self studying. get quizlet x slader. its the only reason i survived. loved cooper as my TA though, he was very helpful and nice overall
Tough to understand him and his notes, Had about double the homework compared to other professors and they were very hard problems as well. If you have to take him, find another resource and take CLAS to survive this course.
Horrible professor so learn from the textbook and go to CLAS. Really easy to do well in the class though because it is completely online, even the exams and final. If it is in person, avoid taking this professor.
Lectures are recordings with notes (both handwritten and more polished typed-up notes) available online, while class times are used to go through practice problems. I prefer this format to standard in-class lectures (though ymmv), and the in-class practice problems helped me develop my intuition for real analysis. Tests are take-home over 24 hours.
I would never take him again. He is awful. His homework and midterms do not match the lectures. Professor Garcia makes no sense. You cover limits about the whole time, when in calculus 1 in high school you cover limits for maybe 3 days. He is a terrible professor would not take again. TAKE A DIFFERENT PROFESSOR IF U WANT A GOOD GRADE!
Lectures are awful he does not explain anything clearly and jumps around a lot. Doesn't answer questions. Tests do not match homework or what is learned in CLAS. TAs don't help much either. Take someone else if you can.
i can see he tried i guess. idk man, currently failing the class rn. i wouldnt take him again, he was the only option i had! the tests are really hard and the studyguides dont match the tests at all. do not take him the TAs suck as well trust bro
Where do I begin...Carlos Garcia Cevera. You are my sunshine and the light of my life. If u know how to long division, this class will be a piece of cake. His lectures really moved me in a way that I didn't think was possible. His tests are a piece of cake if you could call them that. Expect group tests and all his exams are open. Go, girl.
I would avoid this man in whatever course you take. Even in the simplest course (3A), he still made it extremely harder than a calculus class needs to be. Overwhelming amount of material for very little time we have in a quarter. TA's in this course are just here to answer questions rather than to teach. Avoid this guy at all costs.
I would avoid him unless you are extremely confident in your calculus abilities BEFORE enrolling. his lectures are confusing and all over the place, the homework is extremely difficult, and the study guides provided never match the 3 question midterms. the curve is big because the median score has been failing. go to CLAS if you take this course
He can explain advanced topics very thoroughly and well, but his fancy math-language doesn't lend itself to introductory calculus topics. Study guides and homework are typically harder than exams, and EC is offered. Office hours are very insightful for careers in math-adjacent fields, as the professor is extremely knowledgable. TAs vary widely.
The WORST teacher I have ever had. The man does not teach, only talks. He explains nothing and it feels like he's just reading off his course outline the whole time. We were supposed to get all the way to integrals but somehow went over limits every lecture. Homework and study guide have nothing to do with midterms/finals. TAs are useless.
Cannot teacher, you are going to be self learning the whole quater
this class ruined my confidence in math. i can tell he tries to have people learn but he is so confusing and hard to understand (both with speaking and notes):( both midterms were ok, but the final was so bad it brought me from a A+ to a C+. curve was not great even tho many people struggled. study guides don't help at all. pls go to CLAS!
I took calculus in High School and did the mistake of not taking the AP test to avoid this class. While he does provide extra credit on midterms, they're four questions and are graded very harshly. His lectures do not help at all and my grade went from a A- to C on the final.
Lecture is not helpful. However, if you email him outside of class time he will respond. Additionally, the final was a bit harder than it should have been and resulted in my grade dropping 12%. However, he did curve everyone up a letter grade, so he does curve based on if lots of people do bad. Go to CLAS + review on your own if you want an A.
Professor Garcia was not a very good professor. It was hard to understand him during his lectures. Section was not helpful either, so SELF TEACHING and CLAS is a must. Study Guides had nothing to do with the actual exams. If you have never done calculus before don't take this class you will be lost or at least try and take it with another professor
Don't just don't
I had to teach myself the whole course!!!!!!!
Utterly challenging to learn from. TA zero help. Used advanced notation and taught concepts in the most confusing, unnecessary ways. Study guides nothing like actual tests. I went to CLAS, got a tutor (who laughed when I showed her our study guide/notes), and had to basically teach myself this entire class. Somehow escaped with a C+. Beware.
Horrible teacher, DO NOT TAKE. Retaking 3A right now, absolutely unbelievable how much easier it is with a different teacher. Would assign 40 hw questions a week, lectures didn't help whatsoever, and gave zero examples in class. Please don't take, it's not worth it.
Professor's teaching style focuses on practice problems and online resources. Lectures are pre-recorded, but the in-class time for solving problems is helpful. Unstuck ai and the free textbook were great study tools alongside the practice tests.
Very bad teacher, hard to understand, would never take a class of his again.
Avoid. Boring lectures and unorganized
I took his class last year, and I very much enjoyed it. Because the classroom is flipped (lectures at home and problems in class), it took a little bit of time to get used to. However, as an aspiring teacher myself, I am always happy to see teachers/professors trying new things -- especially when they are as passionate as Carlos is!
As others have indicated, lectures are flipped, with class time used for problem reviews/clarifications. I often struggle to keep up with real-time lectures, so this approach made the class much more accessible for me. 118 series is very difficult, but prof was caring and very approachable, emphasizing proof writing skills over regurgitation.
